Reickhoff leads Moeller to sectional title Junior golfer shoots 3-under at Glenview By Terry Jenkins Post contributor
·Moeller High School's Ryan Reick' . hoff had a feeling that the Crusaders were going to have a big day Friday at the Division I sectional tournament at " Glenview Golf Course. What the junior did not know, however, was that he would be the main golfer behind that big day. Led by Reickhoff's sectional-record, 3-under-par 69, Moeller earned a 10stroke victory over Turpin, winning its second consecutive sectional championship with a score of 298.
"I told my teammate, Mike Rocawich, that we were going to win this thing on the way here," Reickhoff said. "This was something that we wanted very badly." Besides setting the sectional record, Reickhoff's 69 also tied the school record for 18 holes. His round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-five, ninth hole, which was Reickhoff's final hole of the day. "I hit a big drive, and all I had left was a 7-iron to the pin," Reickhoff said. "When I hit the shot, I thought it was going in. I had it right at the pin. "Even though it did not go in, it still only ended up less than a foot from the hole." Said Moeller coach Rick Bohne: "I think a lot of people had written us off
for dead. We haven't played well in tournaments all ~rear. But, with Ryall and Mike Rocawich as leaders, we certainly got back on track. "I hope we can carry this over to the district's next Thursday (at Weatherwax in Middletown)." Rocawich followed up Reickhoff's round with a 73, giving the Crusaders a big lead. Todd Kahle and Nick Lykins then finished off the day for Moeller with a pair of 78s. Turpin finished second, with a 308 total. Turpin was led by Bryan Shick's 74 and Kyle Elfers' 75. Milford grabbed the third spot, led by Mark Van Houten's 77. The three individual qualifiers were Lakota's Tee McCabe, and Sycamore's
Jason Banks and Jeff Marsh- all with 76s. Division II INDIAN HILL WINS - Loveland's Billy Williamson and Greg Lahrman fired the low rounds of the Division II sectional, a 71 and 73 respectively, but it was not enough for the Tigers to hold off Cincinnati Hills League rival Indian Hill. Indian Hill did not count a score over 82 in winning the sectional team title with a 318 total. Senior David Kreitzer paced Indian Hill with a 76. Loveland and McNicholas were next at 321 to claim the remaining qualifying spots. Joe Brannon of Hamilton Badin led the individual qualifiers, with a 76.
Cooper Tyo of Kings and Jason Inderhees of Ross were next, with a 77 and 79 respectively. MIDDLETOVTN, OHIO- Brian Roettger found it tough handling the decision by Joan Whitaker, St. Xavier's veteran golf coach. After playing poorly the final two weeks of the season, Whitaker decided not to play Roettger in last week's Division I sectional at Miami Whitewater. "I was upset and ready to quit the team," Roettger said. "After I thought about it, I decided to practice rather than quit. It has turned out well." On Thursday at Weatherwax Golf Course, Roettger's four-over-par 76 helped the Bombers capture the Division I di!>trict tournament with a tournament record-tying score of 301. One stroke behind St. X in second place was Fairfield, while Turpin came in at 307. Both earned spots in the state meet with the Bombers. In Dh;sion II, Indian Hill captured the championfhip easily with a 314. Summit Country Day, which missed qualifying for the state meet lz.st year by one stroke, erased that bitter memory by taking third in Division III for the final berth. "We played at Weatherwax on Sunday and I shot a 78," Roettger said. "That's how I earned my spot back. I'm happy I didn't quit." Whitaker pointed to St. Xavier's depth as the main reason for the Bombers' third consecutive district championship. "I set a goal for the kids of everybody shooting at least a 76 and thty bettered it," Whitaker said. Fairfield appeared in trouble after nine holes, but the Indians rallied on the Woodside Course to finish second. An obviously upset Kyle Elfers received several .warnings from tournament officials during a morning round of 39 on the Woodside Course, putting Turpin's team in jeopardy of not qualifying. But Elfers came back with a 36 on the Meadows, and the Spartans went on to oust Moeller for the third and fmal qualifying spot.

"I started to wonder after starting off with two bogeys, but I then birdied the next hole and put together a

A- mediocre team in tournaments during the season, Moeller finally put it together when it counted the most Friday at Glenview Golf Course. Behind Ryan Reickhoff's tournament-record three-under-par 69, the Crusaders won the Cincinnati East Division I sectional golf tournament witli a brilliant 298. Turpin (308) and Milford (315) finished second and third respectively, also qualifying for next week's district meet at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown. In Division II play, also at Glenview, an ever-improving Indian Hill team captured first place with a 318 while McNicholas (321) and Loveland (321) also advanced to the district meet. "We've played well in dual meets during the season but horrible in tournaments," Moeller coach Rick Bohne said. 'This team took time to develop but we've been doing well lately."
Bohne said Mike Rocawich the only senior, was the catalyst. ' "Several weeks ago when Fairfield was the (Enquirer's) Team of the Week, the article talked about their senior leadership as the key " Bohne said. "I pointed this out to Mike and he has since responded." ¡ Rocawich, who shot a four-over 76, said, "I wasn't sure how the others would respond, but it has worked out well." Reickhoff' s record-setting round ended with an eagle on the par-five, 490-yard 18th hole. "I was hitting the ball well today," Reickhoff said. "I used a driver and then a seven-iron into the green and then made a 15-foot putt for the eagle." Indian Hill's 12-year streak of qu_alifying for the district tournament moved to 13 following Friday's championship. . . "We're a young team with a senior, two sophomores and two juniors," West said. "From the second week of the season these kids kept taking strokes off:" David Kreitzer led the way for the Indians with a three-over 76 while Andy Gorby, the Braves' No. 4 golfer, fired a surprising 79. "Every one of these players has been a medalist at least once this season," West said. "That should tell you the balance we have. It showed today." Loveland's duo of Billy Williamson and Greg Lahrman fired the lowest scores in the Division II tournament with 71 and 73 respectively. Nick ~orowski, the No. 4 golfer for McN1cholas, came through with a 75 as the Rockets advanced to the district for the first time in five years.

The goal at the state golf tournament today and Saturday is to focus on golf and not let the excitement of the event take over. ''When a golfer starts thinking about what he'll shoot, he's in trouble," Moeller coach Rick Bohne said. "As much as possible, they must forget about (being at) state and do the same things that got them there." Bohne's Crusaders are one of three Cincinnati schools entered in the 36-hole Division I classic over the par-72, 7,10~yard Scarle1 Course. Wilmington and St Xavier are the others. Other Division I teams: Defending champion Toledo St John, Westerville North, Hudson Worthington Kilbourne, Pickerington, Cleveland St Ignatius, Canfield, Parma and Ashland. Powerful Stow Walsh Jesuit failed to qualify when their top golfer turned in an incorrect score card at the district meet. McNicholas is Cincinnati's representative in the Division II tournament at the Scarlet course while Seven Hills will represent the Queen City in the Division III on the par-70, 6,020-yard Gray Course. . Moeller seniors Nick Lykins and Andrew Clyne are the only Cincinnati area players with expe· rience in a state tournament Lykins qualified as an individual two years ago while playing for Sycamore with Clyne participating in 1993 and 1994 as a member of the Summit Country Day team. Moeller features four seniors and a sophomores. Besides Lykins and Clyne, the Crusaders will rely on Jim Milam, Andy Horner and Danny Dunlap (sophomore). St. Xavier will field an allsenior team with Matt Staarmann, Jim Herman, Nick Royer, Brian Kuhn and Brett Angner while Wilmington counters with Phil Ziegler, David Wagenseller, Kris Phillips, Todd Bennett and Jonas Marrtensson. Tee times are 8:30a.m.

Fairfield golfers roiJ;-Jt-·5) Fairfield's golf team turned in another impressive performance Tuesday, knocking off No. 6 Milford, 160-163, at O'Bannon Creek. Sophomore T,J. Wilson led the way for the No. 4 Indians, firing a three-over-par 38 and tying Milford's Bryan Morenc for match medalist honors. Despite windy and wet conditions, Nick Borowski of McNicholas turned in the best effort of the day at Maketewah Country Club with a par 36 on the front nine; leading the Rockets past Rog.er Bacon. Mike Rocawich's chip-in on the final hole proved to be the difference for Moeller Wednesday in a 163-164 boys' golf win over Milford. The victory sets up a showdown today against St. Xavier to possibly determine the top golf team in the area. Rocawich, a senior, chipped-in for birdie on the 405-yard ninth hole at Crest Hills Country Club to also earn medalist honors with a 3-over 39. The win raised the Crusaders' record to 6-0 on the season. They're ranked fourth in the area coaches poll this week. Milford is sixth .. Rocawich's chip-in came after his second shot landed 10 yards short of the green. "The chip shot was not the most difficult, because he was below the hole," Moeller coach Rick Bohne said. "At the time I didn't know that the shot would determine the outcome of the match, but he still needed to get the ball close." · Bohne said the close win may help ease the players' tension for today's match against the top-ranked Bombers at Hyde Park Country Club. ''This was the first matcl} that the kids were really worried about," Bohne said. "They knew that Milford is a good team, so to get a win like this was a real relief because we did not play as well as we can." Bohne said he knows they'll probably need their best match or close to it to win today. "I hope this win will break us out of our little slump that we've been in," he said. "We did not play well in Columbus last weekend as well. I know the kids have really been looking forward

Rick Bohne, Head Coach, Varsity Golf He moved to Cincinnati in 1979 and taught at Summit Country Day School for six years. There, he coached basketball and soccer. As Assistant Coach, he helped take the basketball team to the 1980 State Tournament. That team, featuring Dexter Bailey and Dan Fleming, finished as State Runner Up in Division IV.

Rick is a native of Niles, Ohio. He earned his B.A. in History and M.S. in Teaching from the University of Dayton. He is currently the Religion Department chair at Moeller, teaching Jumors and seniors.
Rick has been at Moeller since 1985 and has coached the Varsity Golf team for seven seasons. In that time, one team (1992) and one individual (Eric Groh 1987) h.ave qualified for the state tournament. His 1992 team won the prestigious Muirfield Invitational, the Troy Invitational and set a
new school record by finishing first m the Sectional Tournament. Rick was named the Enquirer Coach of the Year for 1992 and is a threetime GCL Coach of the Year. Rick and his wife, Janet, live in Pleasant Ridge with their children, Jessica (8) and Steven (4). They are members of Nativity parish.
