No. 1: Indian Hill and Anderson

In a pair of surprises, Anderson won the Division I Cincinnati east sectional high school golf championship and Indian Hill won the Division II sectional title Friday at the Glenview course.

A balanced attack carried Anderson to a seven-stroke victory, 311-to-318, over Lakota, with Princeton third at 324 and Turpin fourth at 336 to earn berths in Thursday's Southwestern Ohio district meet at Weatherwax course in Middletown.

"We're peaking at the right time," said Anderson coach Mike Loudenslager.

Anderson's Matt Pearce shot a 3-over-par 37-38-75 to share the day's medalist honors with Kyle Elfers of Turpin and David Kreitzer of Indian Hill.

Peter Spaeth scored 77, Chris Tatum 78 and Kirk Hathaway 81 to help Anderson win over favored Turpin and Moeller, which finished a disappointing seventh.

Elfers, a senior, had the best nine-hole round of the day, closing with a 2-underpar 34 after taking an automatic two-shot penalty for a

double-bogey six on No. 4 when his shot bounced off a tree root and hit him in the chest.

Birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 14 featured his comeback 34 after he fired a 41 on the opening nine.

Indian Hill, coached by Bob West, beat out runner-up Hamilton Badin by 16 strokes, 327-to-343, in Division II, with Loveland taking third at 349.

Crusaders overcome adversity

The morning after was agonizing for Todd Kahle.

Guilty of signing an incorrect scorecard that cost the Moeller golf team a first-ever Greater Catholic League South championship, Kahle wasn't ready to face the critics at school last Tuesday.

In fact, less than 30 minutes after waking up, Kahle was greeted with a report in The Enquirer that revealed the 18-yearold's mistake in the 36-hole tournament at Weatherwax.

Reality sunk in again at school where students stood around the hallways discussing the unfortunate incident, often wondering out loud how Kahle could have let it happen.

"Everyone on the team was real supportive and told me it could have happened to anyone," Kahle said. "It's horrible to win, then lose. Only a couple of the students were nasty about it.'

Many questioned if the team could handle this adversity. Even veteran coach Rich Bohne, who was flooded with questions from the faculty, wondered if the team could rebound.

The Crusaders silenced the critics on Saturday in resounding fashion, winning the prestigious Dick Hadley Memorial Classic at Weatherwax.

The field included every top 10 team from Cincinnati, including No. 1 Turpin.

This achievement earned Moeller The Enquirer's Team of the Week honors. The Crusaders finished second in the Enquirer coaches' poll behind Turpin.

The Crusaders also won the Moeller Invitational and took second at the Muirfield Classic.

"We returned five starters and I thought we would be pretty good this season," Bohne said. "The three seniors have had good seasons and provided the leadership

Ryan Rieckhoff led the way for the Crusaders, averaging a careerbest 37.8 strokes for nine holes, including a team-low 78 at the Hadley Classic.

"I got off to a good start during the summer and played well in most tournaments," Rieckhoff said. "In August, I was tired and my game slipped but I stepped it up once the high school season started."

Besides Rieckhoff, every Crusader golfer captured medalist honors at least once. The Crusaders were 12-2 in dual meets.

"Ryan has been outstanding," Bohne said. "His game has matured as he matured. He's the catalyst who has provided the lead-

ership we needed this season.''

Moeller's losses were to St. Xavier and Turpin but Rieckhoff was playing in a national tournament when the Crusaders collided with St. X in late August. Kahle sat out with a back injury in the Turpin match.

"We're undefeated with all the players in the lineup," Bohne said.

"But that's not to say that we would have beaten St. X or Turpin.

Both are fine teams that played well against us."

Senior Brian Arlinghaus along with juniors Nick Lykins, Jim Milam, Andy Horner and Bart Peters round out the starting lineup.

All good things come to an end someday, unless you happen to play for the St. Ursula girls soccer team.

The defending state champion Bulldogs are nearly unbeatable against fellow Girls Greater Cincinnati League opponents. They have not lost a league contest in more than four years.

The streak continued Monday, when St. Ursula had to battle to tie a feisty McAuley squad, 2-2.

St. Ursula is 9-0-3 overall and 4-0-2 and in first place in the GGCL. McAuley is 7-1-4 and 2-0-3.

Twice the Mohawks had the lead in the game, but St. Ursula fought back both times, scoring the game-tying goal with just over five minutes left.

"There comes a time when you have to turn it up to 150 percent, and this was one of those times," said St. Ursula's Stephanie Arling.

McAuley broke the ice when Michelle Burke took a pass from freshman Betsy Moore and scored early in the game.

Heather Mitts tied the game for St. Ursula midway through the second half when she scored off Regina Edwards' corner kick, but Jnny Nickerson gave the lead back to the Mohawks off a direct kick on a handball call.

St. Ursula's 44-game undefeated streak appeared in jeopardy until Annette Gruber broke out of a scramble in front of the net to even the score at 2 late.

"There's no pressure on the girls because of the streak," said St. Ursula coach Bob Sheehan.

McAuley coach Shannon Gen said she was happy with the way her team played, especially since the Mohawks lost standout stopper Kari Sunderhaus last week with a broken leg suffered against Seton.

"Too many teams are intimidat· ed against St. Ursula, but we went right at them," Gers said.

Shot at golf pays dividends

Relating to Justin Bonomini would be very easy for the majority of the thousands of Cincinnati golfers.

A public course player who works a full-time summer job, the 17-year-old Bonomini has developed into one of the area's better high school golfers.

Once an athlete who concentrated on baseball and football, Bonomini is now one of the key ingredients for the No. 1-ranked Turpin golf team.

"Two golfers can't carry us to Columbus," Turpin coach Bill Hanneken said, referring to tested Spartan standouts Kyle Elfers and Andy Sanders.

"It will take at least four players and Justin is one of them. We asked him to average 40 strokes last year and he came in at 40.5.

We need him under 40 this season."

Bonomini wasn't always a competitive golfer.

"I didn't start taking golf seriously until my freshman year," Bonomini said. "This was after surgery on the knee which was injured playing football for the Turpin junior high team."

Advised by the doctors that another blow to the knee could be devastating, Bonomini decided to get the old set of golf clubs out of the garage and give it another try.

A mediocre player as a freshman, Bonomini decided to give up baseball to concentrate on golf. He made great strides the next year and came on strong last season as a junior.

Bonomini' s play was instrumental for Turpin in 1993 as the Spartans surprised by earning a first-ever berth in the state meet.

"It was a thrill going to state, knowing we were one of the 12 best teams in the state," Bonomini said. "But no one on the team thought we could win because of Upper Arlington."

During the summer, Bonomini has been active in tournaments. He finished second to Sycamore's Jeff

A first-team all-state selection, he was medalist in the prestigious Dick Hadley Memorial and compiled the best stroke average (36.8) of any golfer in Cincinnati.

Under Hanneken's quiet but effective coaching style, the Spartans were 11-2 in dual meets, winning the Queen City Conference and city championships. They were second at the Division I state meet.

The medalist at the Division I sectional and district tournaments, he compiled a 36.7 ninehole stroke average and was named to the The Coaches Association All-State second team.

The player of the year in the GCL, he averaged 37.9 strokes for nine holes while capturing medalist honors in the league tournament and the Moeller Invitational.

A three-y£!ar starter, he averaged 37.8 strokes per nine holes, the third best average in Cincinnati. He was medalist seven times and was named to the CHL's allleague tearn.

In his first year at Loveland, he took a team with only two returning starters and molded them into second-place finishers in both the sectional and district tournaments while qualifying for the state meet.

An athlete who could have also played football, he decided on golf, averaging 37.9 strokes per nine holes, earning medalist honors five times this season.

The acknowledged team leader, he played an instrumental role as the Silver Knights captured the Division Ill sectional and district championships. He shot a team-best 156 at the state meet, where Summitfinished 11th.

Although his 39.1 averwasn't the best in Cincinnati, it was mostly compiled on more difficult country club courses. He~ medalist six times while leading the Braves to the CHL title.

A four-year starter, he averaged 38.3 strokes for nine holes, capturing medalist honors seven times while being named to the FAVC allleague team.

One of the most underrated players in Cincinnati, he averaged 38.7 strokes per nine holes, earning medalist honors five times while being named to the GCLN allleague squad.

The most consistent player for the Silver Knights, he averaged 39.9 strokes per nine holes and was named to the Miami Valley Conference all-league team.

Middies shock Turpin City golf title thrown into disarray Just when it appeared that the Turpin boys golf team had just about wrapped up the city championship, up stepped the Middletown Middies.

In a stunning upset Tuesday on the Highlands Course at Weatherwax, Middletown downed the Spartans, 160-168, wiJ:h Middie sophomore Scott Miller taking medalist honors with a two-over 38.

"We've now beaten five of the top 10 in the city this week," Middletown coach Jim Marcum said. "On Sunday, we won the Greater Miami Conference and now Turpin."

Besides Miller, Jason Weinder and Brad Osborne both came through with 40's.

Kyle Elfers and Justin Bonomini each shot 40's for Turpin but sophomore Andy Sanders had an off day, firing a 45. · It now appears that the winner of Saturday's Dick Hadley Memorial Classic at Weatherwax will emerge as the 1994 city champion.

The champion will be determined by the Enquirer coaches poll this week. ·
