The first group to be mentioned is the group of award winners :from the football banquet this past winter. Every year Moeller has an awards ceremony that is second to none. Every year the Captains' mothers and fathers plan to top last· year's. gala. Moeller dominates GCL All-Star team Moeller won its 19th GCL championship this past season. The Crusaders have won 15 straight league titles and currently possess a 68 game winning streak in the GCL. This has been an impressive record especially considering the fact that the GCL remains one of the most competitive leagues in Ohio. Excluding Moeller, a league team has made the playoffs amost every year that they have been in existence. So to be named to the GCL All-Star is quite an honor for any you~g man to receive. The 1987 team placed 12 individuals on the All-star team and Steve Klonne was again named Coach of the Year. The list of the GCL All-Stars is printed below:

FOOTBALL ~~~~~~

Crusaders end with big win

page 2

Moeller over Hamilt¡QD, 62-0 ,,'¡ Quite a few Ohio prep football teams were breathing easier late Friday night when it was learned that the Moeller Crusaders would not make it to the State Playoffs. After a heart breaking 10 to 7 loss last week to Princeton, the Crusaders stormed back to crush host Hamilton 62 to 0. On Hamilton's first offensive drive, the Big Blue gained 38 yards on 3 first downs. By the end of the game, Hamilton had a total of 3 first downs and 5 total yards. On the other side of the ball, the Crusader offense gained 527 total years, and quarterback Scott Davis com pleted 14 of 15 passes for 223 yards and 3 touch downs. It was a night on which the Crusaders could do no wrong. Moeller defensive standouts included Rick Bennett and Tim LeRoy, both gathering in an interception and decent return. Defensive line. men Kevin Gilles, Mike Jennings, and Brent Rie. senberger all made life miserable for the Hamil ton quarterback. And, quite obviously, the entire defense played together as one intense unit, not allowing the Big Blue a breath of air. Best

Offensiv~

Linemen

= S. Broughton

Offensively, Davis rushed for 2 touchdowns while throwing a TD strike to Bill Spoor and 2 to Rick SchuUe. Mike Olexa, Craig Griffey and Casey Fisher all rushed for touchdowns, while Chris Jenkins returned a punt for yet aaother score. Placekicker Rich Baker enjoyed the extra point duty, although early in the game running back Terry Macklin sliced into the endzone for an extra point conversion. Although the Crusaders will be edged out of Playoff contention by only a few Harbin points, Moeller fans and coaches are proud of the gutsey performance and "never say die" attitude of their football team. After losing 13 to 6 to Colerain in overtime, and losing 14 to 7 the following week to Youngstown Ursuline, every.. one wrote off the Crusaders. But Moeller bounced back and won 6 big games in a row, defeating Akron Buchtel, Roger Bacon, Purcell Marian, St. Xavier, Elder and LaSaDe. This set up the familiar confrontation between the top two teams in the City, Prince. ton and Moeller. The Vikings dodged a last minute bullet to down the Crusaders 10 to 7. By beating Hamilton, Moeller ended the year with a 7 & 3 record, and 4 & 0 in the GCL.

Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippin. cott had the following to say about his defensive players, "I can honestly say that this was the best Moeller defensive squad I've coached since the 1982 team. Every game we had a great team effort, and that's what shuts down the opposi tion's offense." Moeller Head Coach Steve Klonne offered his thoughts, "We're going out holding our heads high. We improved with every game-and ended the regular season on a high note~-- -Tonight everyone played and performed well. I really admire the leadership of all the Seniors. They worked harder and made more sacrifices on and off the field than any group has made in a long time. They've made this year my most enjoy. able year yet. I know that each one of those Seniors will be a success in life, and that always means more to me than a 14 to 0 record." Klonne also wished to thank all the parents for their great help and support throughout the year. by Joe Faessler Best Defensive Limebacker =D. Feldhaus

The offense then got the ball and scored on a 26 yard touch down to Steve Langencamp. Jason Knecht added the extra point to make the score 10 to 0. The defense came out again and Mark Simmons intercepted a pass and ran it back to the one yard line. From there Lonnie Blackley ran it in. Jason Knecht again added the extra point to make it 17 to 0. Withrow came out and at the end of the

half, scored a touchdown, but could not convert the point after. Moeller came out the second half but could not move the ball: The defense came out and played great with two caused fumbles by Chris Ryals and Ryan Porter. The offense's last touchdown came when Joe McCullough caught a 27 yard touchdown pass to make the final score 14 to 6, ending the Freshmen's season with an 8 & Orecord. • WIDS

city showdown

Friday night, October 30, Princeton and Moeller, the top two teams in the City, battled each other for the City Championship at Riverfront Stadium. It was a clash of two superb defenses, as Princeton won, 10 to 7, before a crowd of around 15,000. Princeton received the opening kickoff and drove down the field to Moeller's own 30 yard line. Faced with fourth down and around one, Princeton elected to go for the first down, but the Crusader defense stopped the Vikings in their tracks. Moeller's offense took the field and it was their turn to drive. However, the drive was thwarted by a viking interception of a Scott Davis pass, Davis's first interception of the year. Princeton began on their own 40 yardline and again drove the ball well. But the Moeller defense would not allow the Vikings to pene. trate the 13 yardline, so Princeton was forced to kick a fieldgoal, making to score 3 to 0. goalline. Moell~r defensive lineman. Brent Riesenberger spr~ted down the fieRd and immediately hit ;~he return man, keeping the Vikings at midfield. Now the Crusiuller defense, led by lineman Kevin Gilles (2 caused fumbles for the night) and linebacker Don Feldhaus (17 tackles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 caused fumble), didn't allow a drive, and forced Princeton to punt. The punt went into the endzone, giving Moeller the ball on the 20 yardline to begin the second quarter. After both teams exchanged punts, Prince. ton's short punt glall1lced off a Crusader and into the arms of a V ilk.ing, giving Princeton good field position. But MoelJer's Gilles forced a fumble, recovered by I?el.dhaus, allowing Moeller to ¡ dodge another bullet. ¡ Davis took charge of the offense, throwing two passes in a row to receiver Paul Hopewell. Moeller drove to. Princeton's 23 and then was stopped. Placekicker Adam Hyzdu's flleldgoal attempt was short, _preserving tlhe Vikings 3 to 0 lead. Best Offensive Lineman

The Crusader defense then stuffed Princeton in three plays, forcing another punt. Moeller's offense began on their own 43, and a Davis pass to running back Mike Olexa took the of fense down to the 26. Then Davis connected with running back Terry Dickey for the first /touchdown· of the night. Hyzdu booted Moeller on top 7 to 3, and the first half shortly elapsed. The beginning of the second half turned out to be a nightmare for the Crusaders. Kickoff returner, Craig Giffey, let the kicked ball bounce but a Princeton player raced down the · sideline and dove on the loose ball. Princeton • gained possession of the football on the 19 yardline, and 3 plays later scored on a 7 yard touchdown run by Shawn Vernon. The extra · point kick quickly put the Vikings ahead 10 to

The llliext three series were also synomous, as each team exchanged punts. Moeller's Kevin Henderson darted down field and single hand edly mrunaged t~ stop one threat of a big Viking return. The monotony was quickly shattered when Moeller's defense forced! and recovered a fumble on the Princeton 45. The Crusader offense moved the ball well, all the way to the Viking 10 yardline ... Princeton's defense copied that of Moeller's not allowing a touchdown. Then, Hyzdu's :lfieldgoal attempt was blocked. With the time remaining in the game dwind ling, Princeton marched down the field, but Moeller's defense held the Vikings on fourth down, giving Moe]ler possession of the ball on their own 22 with less than 2 minutes to play. Davis went to work, hitting tightend Rick Schulte. Then Davis connected with Hopewell who, while being tackled, alertly pitched the ball back to Dickey, who was just stopped short of breaking it at the 18. Princeton then cleverly disguise<Ill and exeeuted 3 blitzes, sacking Davis tWice. Moeller's fieldi goal unit ran onto the field with no time outs remaining, and Hyzdu kicked away. It had plenty of distance, but was just wide to the left. Princeton knew that they were victorious, as the game ended, 10 to 7.

Scott Davis led the air assault, completing 13 of 21 passes for 196 yards and 1 touchdown. However, the Crusaders were held to 70 yards in total rushing. Olexa gained 50 yards on 13 carries. Hopewell led all receivers with 5 receptions for 67 yards. Schulte and Olexa also had two catches. Moeller's total offense was 266 yards, 7 yards short of Princeton's total offense. Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippincott who had the game dedicated to him from the players and other coaches, had nothing but praise for his defense, "Those kids fought hard and gave it everything they could. We forced ¡ fumbles at crucial times, and battled most of the third quarter inside our own 20 yardline. It was a great team effort to hold a potent offense like Princeton's to only 10 points." Moeller Head Coach Steve Klonne was also quick to praise his defense, "Our defense gave us all the opportunities we could ask for, but our offense just didn't do it. We played hard, but we had too many mistakes." Asked about the possibility of stili! reaching the playoffs, Klonne ~replied, "Providing that we win next Friday, we;' have as good a chance to get in as we have of J).ot getting in. We just have to concentrate on Hamilton. Our kids won't give up. We're all fighters." Best Defensive Backs

Moe keeps GCL title Friday night, October 23, the Moeller Crusaders defeated the LaSalle Lancers 35 to 21 in Moeller's home game of the season, capturing their 16th consecutive G.C.L. Championship. Moeller took an early lead in the first quarter when quarterback Scott Davis and the offense drove LaSalle down the field. Running back Mike Olexa, who finished the night with 13 carries for 164 yards, scored the first touchdown on a 21 yard run. Adam Hyzdu kicked Moeller on top, 7 to 0. LaSalle's option offense looked to be in top form as the Lancers bounced back with a touch down and extra point, tying the score 7 to 7. The Crusaders struck again, this time much quicker. Davis dropped back and hit a wide open Paul Hopewell down the sideline for a 65 yard touchdown. Hyzdu's extra point kick regained the lead for Moeller, 14 to 7. Moeller's defense, led by linebacker Mike Nichols, lineman Kevin Gilles, and defensive back Chris Kurtz, forced several Lancer punts, allowing the Crusader offense more scoring opportunities.

Moeller's defenSe again kept LaSalle in check, and the Blue and Gold were driving the ball. However, the Lancer defense stiffened, and forced the Crusaders to settle for a 38 yard Hyzdu fieldgoal. With the first half time slowly diminishing, Moeller led 24 to 7. LaSalle's junior quarterback Greg Vatter quickly answered with a 68 yard touchdown run of his own. The extra point brought the Lancers closer, and the half ended 24 to 14. Moeller's defense completly shut down LaSalle in the third quarter, while tlb.e Crusaders accumulated 14 more points. First, there was a 32 yard ¡touchdown pass from Davis to Chris Jenkins. The second touch down was a pass from back up quarterback Casey Fisher to running Terry Macklin, covering 43 yards. Jason Knecht added a 39 yard field goal to make the final score 25 to 12.

Another GCL Friday night, October 16, the Moeller Crusaders dominated the hometeam Elder Panthers in the second half, breaking a 14 to 14 tie to win 35 to 14. Moeller tailback Terry Dickey rushed 22 times for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns, lead ing the Crusaders to a guaranteed share of the GCL crown. Elder received the opening kickoff but was shut down and forced to punt. Moeller quarter back Scott Davis and his offense took charge on their own 8 yardline. Davis came out throwing, connecting on several passes. He hit wide re. ceiver Paul Hopewell for a good gain across mid. field and then tailbacks Dickey and Mike Olexa ran well behind the blocking of their offensive line. Finally, Dickey capped the 92. yard drive with a 1 yard run and placekicker Adam Hyzdu gave Moeller a quick 7 to 0 lead. Both teams exchanged punts, but at the end of the first quarter, Moeller linebacker Mike Nicholas made a diving interception near mid field. However, Elder's defense held the C~ saders and forced another punt. Elder's offense then struck quickly. Two big passes moved the

Panthers down the field, and a touchdown pass and extra point kick tied the gaine 7 to 7. Moeller's offense received the ball on their own 30, but a fumble after a pass completion handed the half back to the Panthers . .Moeller's defense responded by holding Elder on third down, then stuffing a fake punt near midfield. Both teams . again exchanged punts, and Moeller struck quickly from around their own 34. Davis scrambled and hit Hopewell, who eluded several would be tacklers and outran the pursuit to the ~ndzone. Hyzdu gave Moeller the lead, 14 to 1. Elder again used the airwaves to strike back. The Panthers, behind quarterback Steve Keller, drove down the field and scored on a 27 yard pass. The extra point kick tied the game, 14 to 14. Moeller's offense began their two minute assault from their own 35 and drove deep into Elder territory all the way to the 2 yardline. With no timeouts left and only 16 seconds remaining in the half, Moeller lined up quickly. However, the official stook over the ball until one second remained, when Elder jumped off. sides. With one second and the ball on the one yardline, Moeller lined up and waited to hear the

Moeller's offense, plagued by penalties, was forced to punf~from deep in their own terri tory. But the punt was fumbled by Elder and recovered. by Moeller's Kevin Henderson, who was credited with 5 tackles on Special Teams. whistle to begin. Instead~ they heard a whistle ending the first half, so Ekler escaped into the half unscathed. In the second half, both teams traded punts twice, the last one a short Elder punt which was alertly snagged by Moeller's Tim LeRoy near midfield. The Crusader offensive line took charge, knocking Elder defenders off the line of scrimmage and creatiing great lanes for Dickey and Olexa. The drive culminated in an 8 yard touchdown run by Dickey. Hyzdu booted Moeller on top for good, 21 to 14" Elder received the kickoff and fumbled the ball back to Moeller. However, the~official ruled that the runner was already dow~ so Elder maintained possession. Moeller's defense continued to improve with each series, led by linemen Mike Schiess, Craig Konrad, and Eric Schneider. Defensive¡ back .John Walker anchored the secondary, while linebackers Nichols and Don Feldhaus also played well. Elder was soon forced to punt. Moeller's offense began the fourth quarter on their own 16 and again the offensive line won the battle in the trenches. Moeller drove the length of the field and scored on a 5 yard run by Dickey. Hyzdu widened the margain, 28 to 14. Elder's offense drove down to Moeller's 20 yardline, but the Crusaders pushed the Panthers backwards and regained possession for the ball when Elder failed to convert on fourth down.

Davis, Dickey and Company chewed out yards and the clock, and Davis scored from one yard out with 1:17 remaining. Hyzdu's extra point kick made it 35 to 14. Moeller's defense then kept Elder on their half of the field to end the game. Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippincott was pleased with his team's play, despite a rocky second quarter, "It was another great team effort. In the second quarter a few b~ passes resulted in 14 points, yet we held the number one passer in the City to 11 for 31 passes for 209 yards. We shut them down completely in the second half, and allowed only 44 yards total rushing for the night.'' Moeller Head Coach Steve Klonne had nothing but praise for his team, "Our defense had a rough second quarter but quickly recovered and shut Elder down. Offensively, we executed well and marched down the field in crucial situations. Coming to the Pit and beating a tough team in Elder makes me feel more excited than any other victory of this year." Moeller's offense gained a total of 466 yards. Olexa complemented Dickey with 85 yards on 14 carries. Dickey caught 4 passes for 26 yards, while Hopewell caught 3 for 102 yards and one touchdown. Moeller is now 5 & 2 overall and 3 & 0 in the GCL. The Crusaders can clinch their 17th GCL title in a row by defeating LaSalle next week.

Reserves fall -short against Elder On Saturday, October 17, the Elder .Panthers spoiled the Reserve Football Team's quest for a second straight undefeated season with a 7 to 6 win over Moeller. As the score shows, both teams had trouble finding the end zone. Elder's only score came. at the beginning of the second quarter when an Elder runner swept the outside for a touchdown and with the extra point, made it 7 to 0. At the end of the first half, the offense threw a long pass complete to Chris Asbrock who made it to the Elder 5 but time ran out. The score at the end of the first half was Elder 7, Moeller 0. The second half started out with the two teams exchanging the ball a lot. The ·exchanges went on punting back and forth until some action in the fourth quarter when Hyzdu hit . Matt Birrell from midfield with a TD pass. The

extra point was just wide, making it Elder 7, Moeller 6. The offense faced with a crucial 3rd down play, ran a flea.flicker. Hyzdu passed to Bee:a:. man and Beerman laterally to Sean Mowry to pick up a crucial first down. The offense drove into field goal range· and with just a ·couple of minutes left, looked like a game winner, but a clip took them out of field goal range, back to midfield. It all came down to one play, fourth and long. Hyzdu dropped back in the pocket and under pressure, lofted a long spiral into the hands of Chris Asbrock, but Asbrock was just a couple of yards short of the first and Elder got the ball back. Elder ran out the clock, clinching the victory.

Freshmen roll up another On Tuesday, October 13, the Moeller Frosh defeated LaSalle 22 to 0. LaSalle won the toss and received the ball. Moeller's defense stopped them and forced LaSalle to punt. The offense got the ball and · was stopped. When they tried to punt, it was blocked and LaSalle got the ball deep in Moeller territory. The defense went to work and stopped LaSalle. On fourth down and goal, LaSalle dropped back to pass but the quarterback was sacked. Neither team could move the ball but in the middle of the second quarter, Carlos Collins caught a 49 yard pass and was tackled at. the three yard line. From there, Adam Adkins went

in to make it 6 to 0. Jason Knecht added the extra point to put Moeller ahead 7 to 0. The defense played great the rest of the quarter. With 13 seconds left in the half, Steve Langencamp caught a 10 yard pass in the eml zone to make the score 13 to 0. The extra point kick was blocked. The second half began but Moeller's offense could not move the ball and was forced to punt. The defense came out and stopped LaSalle. The offense got the ball and on the second play, Carlos Collins ran 78 yards to put Moeller up 19 to 0. The defense held LaSalle again for the rest of the half. Crusaders- shoot down Bombers Friday night, October 9th,_the Moeller Cru,. saders bounced back from a disappointing first half to down the· previously undefeated St. Xavier Bombers 14 to 7 at St. X. The home team received the opening kickoff and prospered from Moeller blitzes. Quarter. back Mike Healey ran and passed the Bombers down the length of the field for a touchdown. The extra point kick capped off a 7 minute drive and gave St. X an early 7 to 0 lead. Moeller then received the kickoff on their own 25 yardline and executed their best offensive drive of the first half. However, the Crusad~ ers fumbled at their own 26. St. X then took over and again drove down the field. But the beginning of the second quarter marked a change in Moeller's defense, as they stopped the Bombers inside Moeller's own 20 yardline. St. X's fieldgoal attempt failed, so the visitors regained possession of the football. Moeller quarterback Scott Davis and his running backs Terry Dickey and Mike Olexa were limited to short yardage running plays, so Crusader punter Casey Tucker punted the ball to St. X.

The Bomber deepman fumbled the punt and dove after it. Although a Crusader wound up with the football, an official ruled that the St. X punt returner was down and had possession of the ball. ~o, St. Xavier began on their own 15. Not much later, Moeller linebacker Don Feldhaus pick¢d off a Healey pass and returned it 31 yards. Moeller offense fumbled the ball right back to St. X around midfield. The Crusader defense forced a Bomber punt with 43 seconds to play in the half. Moeller fumbled again; but its defense denied St. X of another score.··' Moeller was fortunate :to escape the half only trailing 7 to 0. Moeller's offense ran only 15 plays from scrimmage the entire half and fumbled 3 times. On the other hand, St. X gained 232 first half yards. The Crusaders came out passing in the second half, as Davis hit receivers Paul Hopewell and Joe Toepfer for short gains. to a St. X clip, penned the home team back on their own 10 yardline. Moeller's infuriated defense forced a short punt and the Crusaders began at St. X's 34. Driving down to the 9 yard.linc, Moeller was faced with a fourth down and four. Head Coach Steve Klonne elected to go for the first down and Davis passed to tightend Rick Schulte for Moeller's first touchdown. Adam Hyzdu's extra point kick tied the game 7 to 7 with 5~ 10 remaining in the third quarter. The now even more..charged Moeller defense thwarted another Bomber drive, this time by ¡ way of linebacker Mike Nichols's diving inter.-¡ ception. Faced with a third down, Davis threw to Schulte who appeared to make an outstanding catch, but an official said the ball was trapped. Moeller punted, hut thanks to a Bomber penalty, received another crack on offense. Now fourth down and a long one, Davis kept on the wedge, but the St. X defense held their ground and gained possession by downs at midfield. St. Xavier drove the ball down to Moeller's 10, and on the next play to the 2 yardline, but this second play was called back because of a holding penalty. The very next play Moeller defensive end charged in and smashed St. X 's Healey and it was a hit that sent both temporari-

ly out of the game. On a fourth down and 20, a St. Xavier reeiver made a great diving catch, but it was ruled out of the endzone. Moeller's offense came storming back. Davis connected with Olexa for a 51 yard gain down to St. X's 16. Later Davis, who won Star of the Game honors, kept the ball for a one yard scoring burst. Hyzdu booted the Crusaders on top 14 to 7. The Bombers responded, driving all the way down to the Moeller 18 after a late hit penalty. However, on third down, Moeller defensive back Chris Kurtz leaped into the air and tipped away a touchdown pass. Then on fourth down, defensive back John Walker alertly knocked a pass ¡ down on the goal line. Moeller's offense received the ball with a little over 2 minutes to play in the game. Held on third down and forced to punt, Crusader Casey Tucker boomed a 51 yarder, pushing his average for the night to 48.0 yards, and pushing St. X deep in their own territory. Moeller's de.fense held the Bombers as the 55 seconds event.. ually ticked off the clock. Again the final score, Moeller 14, St. X 7. Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippincott was extremely pleased with his team's effort, "After the first drive of the game, we settled down and began playing well, especially in the second half. You know you've performed well when you hold a great offensive team like St. Xavier to only 7 points." Defensive lineman Eric Madaris and Mike Jennings were named Linemen of the Week. Feldhaus and Nichols were Linebackers of the Week, while Walker received the honor for Defensive Back. Defensive lineman Chris Simon came off the bench in the third and fourth quarters and proved to be an excellent ready replacement. Coach Lippincott wishes to thank all the

Defensive RATS of the week Jeff Crable Todd I II e ANDY FOLZENLOGEN people, who after the game, praised him and his defense's effort. Moeller Head Coach Steve Klonne was thrilled by the win. "This is our biggest win of the season. Our defense was just outstanding and our offense hung together and came through when we needed it in the second half." Moeller's offense certainly didn't get the job done in the first half, and finished with only 187 total yards. However, Davis completed 7 for 11 passes for 108 yards and 1 touchdown. Spoor, Olexa, Hopewell, Schulte, Dickey and Toepfer all had receptions. Moeller was guilty of only 2 penalties for 20 yards, whereas St. X had 10 for 81 yards. The next opponent is rival Elder at Elder. "Elder has a talented team almost identical to St. X. We certainly have our handls full this week." remarked Klonne. Moeller over Pa reel I, On Friday night, October 2nd, Moeller's homecoming proved to be a happy one for the Crusaders as they defeated the defending AA Ohio State Champion, Purcell Marian Cavaliers, 21 to 14. Moeller tailback Terry Dickey paved the way for the hometeam with two rushing touchdowns (27 and 60 yards) in the first quarter. Purcell Marian received the opening kick, but was shut down and forced to punt. Moeller gained possession of the ball on their own 46 yardline and proceeded to move downfield, sparked by a 19 yard pass from quarterback Scott Davis to receiver Bill Spoor. Then Dickey shot through the line of scrimmage for his first touchdown. Placekicker Adam Hyzdu booted Moeller on top, 7 to 0. Moeller's defense, led by defensive back Rick Bennett, linebacker Don Feldhaus .(16 tackles), and lineman Eric Madaris, saw the Cavaliers drive the ball rather successfully. However, the defense stood its ground at the 20 yardline, forcing Purcell Marian to attempt a fieldgoal. The attempt was short and to the left, so the score remained 7 to 0.

Best Defensive Linebacker - D. Feldhaus

The Cmsader offense fumbled the ball right back to the Cavaliers on Moeller's own 14 yard. line. Purcell! transformed the fumble into a rather hiard fought 6 points. The extra point kick hit the dght upright and bounced back, keeping Moeller in the lead, 1 to 6. The C1rusaders received tbe kickoff, and on tile second play fmm scrimmage, Dickey dazzled once again running hard behind his offensive line then side stepping and kicking his way through tthe secondary. Dickey cut loose 60 yards for his second touchdown. Hyzdu's extra point kick was good, giving 1!he hometeam a 14 to 61eacll. In the second quarter, both defenses seemed to settle down and both punt teams enjoyed suecess. The Cavaliers had Moeller backed up on their own 2 yardline, whereas Moeller punter Casey Tucker¡ penned Purcefl back on their own 3. Both offenses held in check, Moeller carried its 14 to 6 lead into the half.

Purcell Marian received the kickoff in the second half but didn't retain possession of the ball for long. Moeller defensive end Eric Schneider forced a fumble, recovered and advanced by Rick Bennett, to the Cavalier 41 yardline. Purcell's multi. schemed defense forced another Moeller punt, giving the ball to the visitors on their own 20 yardline. Moeller's defense returned the favor, forcing the City's leading punter into action. The Crusaders were driven back all the way to their own 16. On the first play, a Purcell linebacker slid untouched into the Moeller backfield and forced a fumble, recovered by the Cav~ tiers at the 8. Purcell soon scored from one yard out and trailing by 2, elected to attempt a 2 point conversion. The attempt was an incomplete pass play, but Moeller was flagged for interference. Purcell then just bulled its way into the end zone on the next play, tying the game 14 to 14. Moeller's offense began from its own 11, but thanks to good execution and key passes from Davis to receiver Paul Hopewell and tightend Rick Schulte, the home team was near mid. field. But the beginning of the fourth quarter, saw the Crusaders punting once again.

Best Defensive Back . RIC1{ BENNETT

PurceiLMarian began on their 10 yardline, but got no ¡ furthe1r as Moeller's defense rose to the occasion and forced a punt from the goalline. Moeller's deep man Rick Bennett returned the punt to Purcell's 33, and a big penalty moved the ball down to the 18. Then Davis took matters iinto his own hands as he optioned to keep the ball and run for the tiebreaking touchdown. Hyzdu's kick gave Moeller the advantage, 21 to 14. Purcell then received the kickoff on the 33 yardline and went to work. The Cavaliers drove across midfield and across the Moeller 40. Purcell was faced with a big third down, and ¡elected to pass.. Meeler's Don Feldhaus, coming on a blitz, chased the passer and finally di!'agged h.im down-_ Since several minutes remaiined on the clock, Purcell punted. Tbis point in the game is where the Moeller offense really won the game. After Davis picked UIP a first down at his own 38, the Crusader offer~Sive line began creatin.g large holes, and tailback Mike Olexa, who rushed! for 106 yards on 9 carries, carried ¡ Moeller down the field u111til the clock expired, giiving the Crusaders their third straight victory, 2'1 to 14. Defensive. RATS

Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippincott felt that not al~ eleven on defense were playing consistently at the same time. "I feel that Eric Madaris played well, coming off an injury, and Don Feldhaus continued to display excellent technique, Rick Bennett played as good a game as any Moeller DB has in I don't know how many years." . ,, . Moeller Head Coach Steve Klonne was obviously pleased with his team's big victory, "Right now every game we play is the biggest game of our season. Tonight our offense scored when it had to, and the defense would occasionally bend but not break. We beat a very talented Purcell Marian team. Now we must build on and improve all phases of our attack as we prepare for a big, bi~Lgame at St. _)(.~jE!I"._':~ __ ,-~----·co--·•1!---

• Offense rolls ID Bacon

• WID

Friday night, Sept. 25th, the Moeller Crusaders put everything together in a 42 to 6 thrashing of visiting GCL opponent Roger Bacon. Roger Bacon began the game on offense, but Moeller's defense forced the Spartans to punt early. Moeller's offense, under the direction of quarterback Scott Davis, began driving the ball downfield. Faced with a fourth down and one yard to go around Roger Bacon's 45 yardline, Moeller Head Coach Steve Klonne elected to try for the first down. Davis pitched to tailback Terry Dickey, who found an opening around the right side and scooted ahead for the first down. Eventually the Spartan defense stopped the Blue and Gold at the 20 yardline. Moeller attempted a fieldgoal, but the kick was wide to the left. A now fired-up Roger Bacon offense moved down the field, mixing the run with the pass. The drive extended into the second quarter, but the Crusaders forced a 4th down close to their own 2 yardline. Bacon's fieldgoal unit

Then tailback Terry MackHn received the handoff and darted ahead. Macklin quickly bounced outside and outran eve1tyone as he scored Moeller's first touchdown .of the night. Place kicker Adam Hyzdu boo'led Moeller on top, 7 to 6. Moeller's' itenacious defense, led by ends Craig Konrid and Eric Sc'h1neider, again forced the visitors to punt. Altholllgh Moeller's offense then had excellent field position, they fumbled the ball back to the Sparta~ns on Bacon's own 15 yardHne. Moeller's defense went right back to work, also red by linebackers Mark Summers and Don Feldhaus and defensive back Rick Bennett. Again Roger Bacon was forced to punt, and the baU rolled to Moeller's own 44.

Davis, behind an aggressive offensive line, moved the Crusaders through and around the Spartan defense. Tailback Mike Olexa iiinished the dr,ive as he burst a few yards into the endzone. Hyz'du's.kick seemed to be good, sneaking through the right upright, but the officials disagreed. So, Moeller now Jed 13 to 6.

The Crusader defense continued to totally shut down Roger Bacon, arid the Spartans had to punt yet another time. The Crusaders, with time running out in the first half, began on their own 31. The backs ran through gaping holes created by the offensive line and tightend Rick Schulte made a key, diving reception. Moeller was knocking near the end zone, and Olexa kicked in the, door with his second rushing touchdown of the night. Coach Klonne decided to go for 2 points and Davis kept the ball on the option and scored. With seconds remaining in the half, Moeller soared on top 21 to 6. Moeller's defense kept the Spartans penned deep in their own territory as the first half ended. Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippincott was obviously pleased with his de. fensive team effort, but he also praised the kickoff team. Moeller defenders Craig Konrad and Jason Clouse each made 3 tackles on the kickoffs, the main reason why the Spartans had such poor field position all night. Moeller received the kickoff to begin the second half as tailback Terry Dickey advanced the kick to Moeller's 41 yardline. The Crusader's drive was highlighted by a 48 yard pass comple. tion from Davis to wideout Chris Jenkins. Shortly afterwards Dickey galloped into the endzone. Hyzdu's extra point was good, giving the home team a 28 to 6 advantage. For one of the first times of the night, Moe!. ler's defense did not force Roger Bacon to punt. Instead linebacker Don Feldhaus racked a Bacon ball carrier, forcing a fumble that was recovered by fellow linebacker Art Lewis at midfield. Wideout Craig Griffey caught a Davis pass for 路 15 yards, and tailback Denny Love made a smooth run around the left side and into the endzone for Moeller's fifth touchdown of the night. Hyzdu put the Crusaders further ahead, 35 to 6. The Moeller defense then held the Spartans and forced them to punt for the fifth time of the night. The home team accomplished all ten路 of their defensive goals, an admirable feat. Bacon, whose offense exploded the week before for 35 points, had only 159 yards total offense . .''We really had a great team effort when we (the defense) accomplished all ten of our goals, you know we did many thing right." Coach Lippincott continued. ''We're looking forward to facing Purcell-Marian next week."

Moeller's offense was not yet fjnished. Still in the third quarter, Davis drove the team downfield, and kept the balll himself for a one yard touchdown plunge. Hyzdu finished the scoring of the night with a!lo·ther extra point, making the score 42 to 6. Now in the 4th quarter, Moeller's second team defense swarmed to the bali and knocked down Spartan passes. The defense held the Spartans on 4th down, turning the ball over to the Crusader's second team offense. The offense, led by quarte1rback Casey Fisher and tailback Mike Eutsey, chewed up yardage and time, driving the ball down to around the 10 yardline. However, the Spartans lrnelld their line on fourth down, putting Moeller's defense back onto the field. Reserves are 4-0,four shutouts On Saturday, September 26, the Moeller Reserve Football Team defeated the Roger Bacon Spartans at Roger Bacon 33 to 0. The offense struggled only putting 6 points on the board in the first half but they came back and scored 21 points in the second. The defense scored the other 6. The defense played superbly, only allowing 3 first downs. The defensive line did an exceL lent job by holding up the line and letting the linebackers play havoc with Bacon. Brad Hindersman made a fumble recovery to

give the offense great field position. John Gunning recovered a ball in the endzone to score 6 for the defense. Ardell Barkley saved a possible touchdown late in the game by diving and just getting a pieee of the ball to prevent the Bacon receiver from catching the ball. Overall great defense performances were by Craig Meyer, Pat Holt, Chris Hurst, Jeff Crable, Brian Zelina, Ken Darby and Jerry Storm. This makes the defense's fourth Zip in a row and not allowing an opponent to score on them in the first four games of the season. by Russ Speigle

Freshmen go to 2-0,beat Bacon On Tuesday, September 15, the Moeller Freshmen defeated Hamilton 12 to 6. Hamilton received the opening kickoff and was stopped. • win column Moe puts one In Friday, Sept. 16, the ·Moeller Crusaders returned to their winning ways' at the expense of the visiting Akron Buchtel Griffins, 18_15. The big story of the game was excellent special teams play by the Crusaders. "It was the best all-around special team's play we've had in years," commented Moeller Head Coach Steve ·Klonne. The punting, place-kicking, kickoff and kickoff return teams executed all night. Bechtel received the opening kick and gave the Crusaders a scare on the first play from scrimmage. Akron's QB connected with his wideout who ran along the sideline and into the endzone~ However, he was bumped and just stepped out of bounds near midfield and Crusader hearts began beating again. The defense settled down and forced the Griffins to punt. Moeller's offense led by quarterback, Scott Davis, . ran the ball left and right down the field. The physical Buchtel defense barely

stopped the Crusaders on third down and the Blue and Gold punted the ball to the Griffins. Moeller's defense, led by linebackers,' Don Feldhaus (17 tackles) and Mark Summers (f8 tackles) continued to pressure the quarterback and swarm to the ball. Both teams took turns . punting, a battl~ that Moeller punter Casey · Tucker won, averaging over 45 yards per kick on 4 punts and cine over 50 yards. Still in the first quarter, the Crusaders drove inside the 20 yard line, but again, Buchtel defense kept 1\il<~eller out of the end zone, but placekicker Adam Hyzdu booted the home team on top 3 _ 0. The Crusader. defense remained hungry and forced another Akron punt. Moeller fumbled the punt deep . in its own territory and the Griffins later capitalized, running the ball for a TD. The extra point kick gave Buchtels the edge, 7-3. Best Offensive Lineman

Moeller's offense drove down the field, but was again stopped short on 3rd down in Griffin territory. The Fieldgoal unit again took the field. The snap was pulled down and placed by Joe Faessler and Hyzdu kicked his second 3 pointer of the night, this one from 32 yards, bringing Moeller within one, 7_ 6. With time running out in the first half and Akron Buchtel with the ball, the Crusaders would have been dlown but content to enter the locker room behind one point. But Moeller DB and Co. captain Rick Bennett felt different. ly. While covering an out route, Bennett step. ped in front of the falling receiver, scooped up the low throw and dashed 53 yards for a shocking TD. The Crusaders sent in their offense to try for 2 points, but the attempt failed. The score, which was the score that carried into halftime, saw Moeller on top, 1.2_ 7. The second half began just as startling as the first half ended. Moeller tailback Terry Dickey, the deep man for the Crusader kickoff return team, caught the baH on his own 15 yardline. He then scooted straight ahead into the funnel Best Offensive Back

formed by his blockers. Dickey broke into the open field and had one man to beat. Terry side. stepped and juked, freezing the defender in his tracks while the Moeller back blazed into the endzone. Again the Crusaders tried for 2, and, again, Buchtel prevailed. However, the home team was quickly up 11 points, HL 7. Hyzdu kicked off and, again, the Griffins began deep in their own territory. Moeller's defensive line, led by linem;m of the week, Kevin Gilles, relentlessly chased down Buchtel runners. Both defenses held the opposing offenses in check throughout~ the entire third quarter.

the receiver darted across the field and into the endzone. The Griffins were successful on their extra two point conversion, so the score now read 18 _ 15. Now with little time remaining, Buchtel attempted an onside kick, but Moeller junior tightend Brian White recovered the kick. The Crusaders then just sat on the ball for 2 plays as the clock ran out and the Crusaders had their first victory of the year. Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippincott was pleased with his team's effort. He also praised Rick Bennett;~s play before tlhe half, "Rick's interception for the touchdown was the turning point of the game. Now we have to gear it up and get ready for Roger Bacon and an impressive aerial attack." In the 4th quarter, Moeller' seemed to be in charge, driving the ball, mixing the run with ¡ the pass, as Davis began hitting tight end Rick Schulte, who ended up with 4 receptions for 28 yards. Once again, the Buchtel defense thwarted a Crusader drive, this time by recovering a fumble near midfield. Moeller's defense responded, stifling Akron Buchtel. Then Moeller defensive lineman Gilles recovered a Griffin fumble. Moeller's offense was pushed backwards, and Tucker boomed a tremendous punt. With time gradually running out, Akron Buchtel began moving the ball. Suddenly Buchtel's quarterback connected on a post pattern, and

lri sh were full of fight YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE PREVAILS OVER MOELLER Saturday night, September 12, the Moeller Crusaders traveled to Youngstown to play the Ursuline Irish, but the Irish were far from hospitable as they defeated their guests 14- 7 at Youngstown State University Stadium. Although Moeller led in almost every statistic, the Crusaders earned for the second straight week that better stats don't necessarily mean a "W" in the win column. Moeller's defense took the field first, and amid a steady downpour of rain forced Ursuline to punt after three plays. The Crusader offense, under the direction of quarterback Scott Davis, moved the ball well at times, but due to a physical Irish defense, turnovers and several intangibles, the Blue and Gold just couldn't find the endzone. On their first drive, they did just make it into fieldgoal range, but the attempt was wide to the left. However, the Moeller defense thrived on adversity. The Crusaders fumbled the ball

around their own 30 yardline. But their defense held tough and forced a fieldgoal attempt, which was short and wide to the left. Moeller regained possession on their own 20 yardline, but fumbled again on the first play. The Crusader defense was barely off the field before they had to strap on their helmets again and trot onto the field. Ursuline attempted a pass which was nicely broken up by safety Doug Lindeman. A delay of game call moved the Irish back 5 yards and defensive end Eric Schneider did the rest as he read a reverse perfectly and threw the ball carrier for a loss. The home team was bumped just out of fieldgoal range, so Moeller's defense did ilt again. Both defenses kept the opposing offenses from scoring in a first quarter that literally flew by. It was the Irish who drew first blood in the second quarter against a Moeller defense that had been on the field about as much as the offi cials. The score came suddenly and without warning, Ursuline's extremely talented tailback Best Offensive Lineman

broke one tackle and zoomed 66 yards for a touchdown. This one play accounted for almost all of Ursuline's total rushing yards of the half. The extra point kick put Y oung'Stown ahead 7-0. All the luck was with the Irish as iUustrated by M0eller's final drive of the half. Starting at their own 20 yard line with under two minutes to play, Davis led the Crusaders right down the field, l>parked by a big catch and run by tightend receiver Paul Hopewell. Moeller had the ball on

the Irish 35 yardline with one second left in the half. Davis dropped back to pass and had great protection from the offensive line. Seeing that none of his receivers were open, Davis kept the ball and scurried along, chewing up yardage while getting closer to the goal line. But he was stopped just short of six points as he was brought down on the 5 yardline. So, the Irish escaped into the locker room with a 'J __ 0 lead. Moeller began the second half on offense, but not for long, as the Crusaders fumbled the ball away on t.he first play. Ten plays later, the Irish scored their second touchdown of the night, and the added extra point put them on top, 14-0. Three plays after the kickoff, Moeller struck back on a 43 yard run by tailloack Mike Olexa. Placekicker Adam Hyzdu !booted Moeller to within seven. In the fourth quarter, Moeller began driving but was forced to punt. The Irish received the ball with 8:40 remaining in t\he game and kept possession of the ball until stopped on a fourth down on the Moeller 7 yardline with only 1 ¡:27 left. Davis drove the Crusaders past midfield, but with 10 seconds left and no timeouts, a Moeller reception proved fatal as the clock ran down.

page 4

As mentioned earlier, statistically, the Crusaders did well. They had only one penalty (for 5 yards) and accumulated 278 yards total offense, 65 yards more than the Irish. Davis was 9_14 passing for 85 yards. His main targets were Hopewell ( 4 receptions, 54 yards) and Olexa (2 receptions, 18 yards). Olexa carried the ball 14 times for 87 yards and one touchdown, while Davis carried 18 times for 90 yards.

PAUL HOPEWELL Moeller's defense was led by lineman Mike Jennings, linebacker Mike Nichols, and defensive backs Doug Lindeman and Rick Bennett. Linebacker Don Feldhaus had 13 tackles and has 32 tackles in two games. Moeller Defensive Coordinator Jim Lippincott was pleased with his defense's effort, but saw plenty of room for improvement, "I felt we performed well in crucial situations, but I'm unhappy with their one big play and their long, time-eating drive at the end of the game. We have up 14 points, and that was too many." The Crusaders will square off against an explosive Akron Buchtel team Friday, Sept. ember 18, at 8:00 on Moeller's Galbreath Field.

Reserves down Middies, 3 4-0 On September 11 the reserve football team brought its record to ~0 by beating the Middletown Middies by a score of 340. 路 The game started with Middletown getting the ball first. On the second they fumbled it over to the Crusaders. Tony Walker carried the ball across the goalline for a 7-0 Moeller lead. The Blue and Gold' kicked off to the Middies who fumbled the ball away again. The oppor路 tunistic Crusaders converted the turnover into another score with Mike Eutsey running it over. The second score and second extra point kick left the score at 14-0 in favor of the hometown Crusaders. The third Middletown fumble of the game left the Crusaders with another chance to put quick points on. the board. This time it was quarterback Adam Hyzdu running the ball across the goalline. The third conversion kick made it 21.0 Moeller. The Middie offense sustained a long drive but the defense again forced a turnover. Chris As. brock caught a Hyzdu pass and carried across the goalline for the fourth touchdown of the game. The kick was wide so Big Moe led 2'7-0: The Middies were stymied by a tough Cru. sader defense. The 'D' forced many turnovers and denied the Middies field position as well. The final Moeller touchdown came on a Hyzdu pass to receiver Keith Valerius. The pass was deflected but Valerius came up with the big catch. The conversion kick was good leaving the final score at 34. 0. The backup offense drove down the field but was unable to score.

The路 defense recored its second shutout of the season. Excellent defensive play was turned in by Chad Whitaker, Craig Meyer, Todd Ille, and Brad Hindersman. Pat Holt had one fumble re. covery and Jeff Crable had a near interception. The class of '90 is still undefeated in football competition. As freshmen they were undefeated and have added 2 games to their win streak. Also, on the reserve level last year, the Crusaders were 8. 2 with 7 shutouts. This year they have already added two shutouts to add to reserve defensive coordinator Tim Schira's impressive list of 'Zips.' The reserves will play Hughes at Moeller on Saturday, September 19 at lOAM.

First show of '8 7 On Sat., Aug. 22, the 1987 edition of the Moeller Crusader football team began the year with a pre-season shutout against host Mt. 'Healthy 28-0. Moeller's first team offense scored on every possession. Crusader tailback Terry Dickey, who ended the day with 9 carries for 110 yards, got things started on the second play in the series when he broke off a 40-yard run. Running behind an aggressive offensive line which really moved people around, Dickey darted his way 15 yards for the first Moeller TD of the year. John Fitzpatrick's -extra point put the Blue and Gold on top, 7-0.

successful

SCOTT DAVIS Statistically, Davis was 9-11 passing for 145 yards. Tight end Rick Schulte was the main target, gathering in 4 passes for 88 yards. Receiver Chris Jenkins caughts 3 passes for 32 yards and blocked well downfield. Rushing leaders, besides Dickey, were Davis (7 carries for 24 yards) and running back Denny Love (5 Carries for 24 yards.)

TERRY DICKEY

Typical of Moeller teams, the defense was successful due to a total team effort. Constant pressure on the opposing quarterback as well as sticky coverage on the receivers held Mt. Healthy's passing attack to only 70 yards. The Owls carried the ball 31 times for only 65 yards, a net yardage of only 135. Hats off to the defense! Offensively the CruSa.ders weren't to be denied. Quarterback Scott Davis led the offense straight down the field an"d kept the ball himself for an &.yard TD run. Fitzpatrick's extra point put Moeller on top 1~0. Moeller's first team offense received the ball two more times in the¡ scrimmage and the results were much the same. Davis capped off the third drive himself with another TD run. This one a 6-yard gallop. Then Dickey scored his Second TD of the day on a 16-yard run. Rich Baker added both extra points and Moeller was now ahead 25-0.

Moeller's defense, besides stuffing Mt. Hea~ thy and forcing numerous punts, also came up with 2 big turnovers, both interceptions. First was· Junior defensive back Joe McEntire and he was soon followed by .fepow. junior defensive , back Kevin Henderson, who made a nice return. However, Moeller's second and third team offensive could not capitalize. Despite passes from quarterback Casey. Fisher to wideouts Greg Stofko and Dan Cloran, inconsistency plagued the Crusaders, the end zone was not to be found. However the second and third teams did contribute to Moeller's 437 total yards.

Moeller over Middies • ID final scrtmmage .

The Moeller Crusaders ended a successful football preseason Friday night, August 20th, .by defeating a very talented and highly-ranked Middletown team 31-14 at Middletown Barnett Stadium. The first play of the scrimmage proved to be an ill open for Middletown. It was a routine dive handoff to the right, but defensive lineman Kevin Gilles stripped the bill loose, scooped the fumble and ran 30 yards for a shocking score. Placekicker Adam Hyzdu kicked the extra point, and seconds into the contest, Moeller led 7-0. Moeller's defense, guided by Gilles as well as senior linemen Mike Jerinings and Eric Madaris, shut down the Middies. For much of the night Middletown's offense was in for 3 plays then out. The Moeller offense did lack some consistency in the early going, but Crusader punter, Casey Tucker, along with the defense, kept the Middies deep in their own territory.

Early in the 2nd quarter, the Crusaders, sparked by a fumble recovering, moved the ball down the field. The large offensive line, anchored by guard Greg Huntington, created many running lanes for backs Terry Dickey and Mike¡ Olexa. Quarterback Scott Davis engineered a drive to the Middletown 10-yard line, but the Crusaders were forced to settle for a Hyzdu field goal, increasing the score to 10--0. Now it was the home team's turn. Sparked by two big running plays, the Middies scored a touchdown of their own. The extra point made the score 10-7:

However, that was as close as the purple and white would come. Moeller took the ball and drove down the field. Then Olexa burst for a 31-yard TD, making an excellent cut to elud~ two defenders near the goaline. Hyzdu then booted the Crusaders on top 17-7. Moeller's swarming defense did not allow the Middies to score again before the half. Linebackers Don Feldhaus and Art Lewis continued to stuff Middletown's running game,· while defensive backs Rick Bennett-and Doug Lindeman mangled receivers and delivered chilling blows on run pursuit. Lindeman spoiled the Middies' hopes for a score when he intercepted a pass. · During the 3rd quarter neither team scored. Moeller did drive the football, but sudden spurts of "little mistakes" plagued the blue and gold.

On the other hand, Moeller's defense seemed to get more energetic as the night wore on. This proved to be the case, as the defense forced 6 fumbles, recovering 5, Coach Jim Lippincott, Moeller Defensive Coordinator, was pleased with his defense's performance, ''I felt the victory was due to a total team effort. Our smaller defensive line handled Middletown's offensive line very well, and our linebackers and DB's really zipped to the ball. When you force 6 turnovers, you ought to win every time." Less than halfway into the 4th quarter, Moeller's offense struck again. In five plays, the Crusaders marched the ball 7 6 yards, culminated by a 9-yard TD run by Davies. Hyzdu's kick put Moeller further ahead, 24- 7.

Moeller's second team offense was called upon shortly, and way before they ran the· clock down, they ran the Middies down, scoring on running back Scott Sheppard's 10-yard run. Rich Baker's kick upped the score to 31-7. In the waning minutes of the game, Middletown sustained an eight play, 7 ~.yard TD drive against Moeller's second team defense. With 4 seconds on the clock, Middletown's quarterback snuck into the endzone. The extra point was added and the final score, once again, was 31-14. Rushing leaders for the Crusaders were Olexa (14 carries for 95 yards), Dickey (14 carries for 62 yards), Davis (? carries for 51 yards) and running back Denny Love (3 carries for 38 yards). Overall rushing statistics reveal 259 total yards for Moeller and only 156 yards for Middletown. Like Coach Lippincott, Moeller Head Coach Steve Klonne was also pleased by the play Of his Crusaders, "We beat a very talented Middletown team. The defense did a great job. Our down linemen prevailed over a larger offensive line and our linebackers have steadily in proved."

Asked of Moeller's offensive play, Coach Klonne replied, "We made good adjustments coaching wise. We still are inconsistent and need to improve on the little things. Our guys

On Saturday, August 22, the Reserves opened their season on a winning note by defeating Fairfield 28-13 at Moeller High SchooL The Crusader's offense had an impressive outing, scoring 4 times against a proven Fairfield defense. Jodi Smith, Adam Hyzdu, Tony Walker and Sean Mowry all scored touchdowns. Moeller's defense surrendered two touchdowns to Fairfield's offense. The Crusaders were also victorious in ·their second scrimmage against Western Hills by the score of 3a-:O. Western Hills got the ball first and they were immediately . forced to punt in three plays. Moeller started play from their own 18 yard line. On the very first play, Jodi Smith ran for an 82 yard touchdown. The point after attempt was wide to the left. Due to the over-powering play of Moeller's defense, Western Hills was never able to get a decent offensive drive. West High was again forced to punt. Moeller didn't waste anytime and this time they scored on the second play of the drive on a 62 yard run by Mike Eutsey. This time the point after was good which made the score 13-0. West High again had bad luck and could not piece together a drive. So they had to punt the ball away again. The punt was blocked and recovered by Craig Meyer. Moeller responded quickly by having a drive that ended with another touchdown for 'Jodi Smith on an eight-. teen yard run. Moeller's defense did the job again, forcing West High to punt. This time Moeller put together a long drive that led to a 25 yard TD pass from Adam Hyzdu to Chris Asbrock. That was the conclusion of the first half. Moeller .got the ball first in the second half and fumbled it away on a bad exchange from Mike Beerman and Tony Walker. West High could not capitalize and had to punt the ball away. Moeller was stopped just as quick and also had to punt it away.

Moeller's defense was again astounding and forced West High to punt. On a bad center snap, Moeller recovered the ball on the half yard line. Mike Beerman took it in on the keeper for a TD. The point after was added to make the score 33-0. That is how the scored remained; thanks to more excellent play by the defense.

Ironman contest concludes Another big part of the off-season program is the quickness and weight progr3D1. ·During the winter, all football players not involved in a winter sport participate in the Moeller quic~ ness and weight program. The quickness program runs from the second week after the season ends up until. spring sports start. The players report several times a week for flexibility and, agility drills. The weight training really never ends. The players start their lifting at the same time as the quickness and try to continue until the season

starts. The Ironman contest always marks the culmination of the weightlifting season. A pro- gram of strength maintenance is followed during . the season but the heavy lifting is over. All players are tested in four major lifts. the bench press, squat, dead lift, and power clean. The first tests are taken in June right at the ena of the school year. Each lifter is then given a goal to achieve by the time the season starts. The following is a list of the players and- their four lift totals that made Ironman for the 1987 football season. .
