MOE VS. MASSILLON CINCINNATI MOELLER THE 1982 OHIO STATE BIG SCHOOL CHAMPIONS IN FOOTBALL So read the headlines as the Crusaders drubbed up-state rival and perennial northern Ohio rival Massillon High School at Ohio State Stadium in front of 42,000 fans • • • 35-14. The Crusaders demonstrated for Massillon, a long time football dynasty founded by Paul Brown, that one can not live in the past. The game was the third meeting between the past and the present, between Massillon and Moeller and the Crusaders have come up big winners on every occasion. For Moeller, the game marked the sixth state championship for the Crusaders since the inception of the state playoffs in 1972. For the Moeller seniors the victory was even more special as the class of 83 dedicated themselves to regaining the state title which was briefly taken from them by Canton McKinley, the 1981 champs.

The victory capped an undefeated 13-0 season for the Crusaders who will almost assuredly be named the National Champs as well by a number of rating services. For first year head coach, Steve Klonne, the victory showed that though Gerry Faust is off to Notre Dame University, excellent coaching is still in evidence from the top on down and the Crusaders can continue to uphold the winning tradition.

The tradition of Massillon, the sea of orange fans (some 20,000 strong), the huge offensive line of the Tigers and a number of exceptional athletes, were all humbled by the holy roller machine • • • called Moeller. Massillon head coach, Mike Currence, had said earlier in the week in response to a remark that the 1982 Crusaders may be the best ever; "Good, we want to play them at their best." Currence may now be hoping he had faced a little less talented Crusaders squad. Though his Tigers were extremely talented and featured a number of underclassman which could mean Moeller and Massillon meeting each other again next year, his team was simply "out personnelled" by the very talented fighting Crusaders.

The game culminated the desire of fans who chanted "We want state" beginning with game one, and players who dedicated themselves to the final goal of winning the state championship.

From the very beginning, the game had marking of a Moeller victory. The Crusader defense forced a Massillon fumble on the very first series of the game when Tiger Tim Sampsel fumbled and alert Moeller defensive back, Matt Purvis, leaped on the Tiger miscue. The Crusader offense is dangerous when it starts at its own 20, so the Tigers knew they were in trouble when the Crusaders set-up-shop on the 39 yard line of the Tigers. Though the Men from Moeller lost 10 yards on the first play, the Crusader "O" buckled down to the task at hand and marched to the Tiger 4 yard line where halfback phenom sophomore D'Juan Francisco took it in. But Massillon wasn't ready to give up after just one score and trailing by but seven points.

Tiger quarterback, Brian DeWitz, shocked the Moeller secondary by completing a 58 yard touchdown strike on the ensuing series to even the contest at 7 - 7. The Moe 0 responded with a little passing wizardly of its own when senior quarterback John Shaffer hit the other Francisco, Hiawatha, right in the numbers. "H" took the pass the remaining 50 yards demonstrating his obvious running talents in the process to bolster the Moeller lead. "H" had little trouble getting past the line of scrimmage as the Moe lineman of: Gary Greve, Shawn Henry, Tyrone Rhodes, Mike Becker and Joe Foley removed the Massillon defensive lineman from the action! The Crusader defense fought off the huge lineman of Massillon to stop the Tigers on the next series and force Massillon to punt. The Crusaders, starting on their own 30, assembled a textbook drive for another score, marching 70 yards on a short six plays. The Tigers came prepared for the Moeller "T" offense and its balanced running attack, but Moe QB Shaffer showed Moe features another awesome aspect, its passing attack. Shaffer

capped the scoring drive by hitting receiver Scott Mahan for a 29 yarder and another six points. Senior kicker, Rob Hentzman, added the PAT to extend the Moe score to 21-7.

But the Tigers weren't quite ready to quit yet. A disputed pass reception on second and 14 for the Tigers kept a Massillon drive alive and Dewitz hit on another touchdown pass, this time to Jim Geiser with just 30 seconds left in the half to narrow the score to 21-14.

But when the teams returned at the half it was a different story. "The third quarter was the key to the game and we started moving the ball offensively," remarked Steve Klonne, and only head man with an unblemished record. The Crusaders dominated the line of scrimmage both ways, while Byron Larkin, the Moeller defensive back, helped shut down the Massillon passing game by snaring attack to easily drive 70 yards. The drive was capped by a 10 yard beautiful sprint by Dave Springmeier.

The usually unheralded fullback, Springmeier has been utilized primarily as a blocking back for the Franciscos. Dave has been outstanding all year with his blocking and team effort. But the state game proved to be the reward for the senior who found himself carrying the ball more than usual to throw off the Massillon defense. Springmeier ammassed 86 yards rushing on the day on just 13 carries. The Crusaders, who shut down the Massillon offense the rest of the day, added their final seven points on an 18 yard pass from Shaffer to Steve Williford. Williford had five catches for 67 yards in the game, while teammate Mahan had three for 45.

Defensively, the line of Co-captain, Don Duckworth, Don Riggs, Steve Koehne and Joe Rolfes, along with the off the bench efforts of senior Rob Klocke shut down the running game of Massillon. The heralded linebacking core of Shane Bullough and Mark Woehler along with Chris Kennedy and Steve Apke made the day rough on the Tigers with their extreme quickness. Ben Thanmann, joined Purvis and Larkin in the defensive backfield performing ultra secondary coverage.

The Francisco brothers each had over 100 yards rushing. Hiawatha finished his senior year with 151 yards on 17 carries to make his Moe's all time leading rusher.

Brother D'Juan, most likely to break that record, finished with 123 yards on 16 carries.

Shaffer was nine of 14 for 109 yards. For Moe's 41 seniors, the game was probably one of the most special events of their lifetimes. For the Moe juniors, and underclassman, it means a great deal of work is ahead. Look out for Moeller in 1983.

ODDS, ENDS & OBSERVATIONS Just as the senior members of this year's Moeller football team ended their respective prep gridiron careers against Massillon this past weekend, a number of former Moeller athletes are in the process of completing their collegiate football careers. For a select few, it is time to sit back and wait for the draft (either the USFL or NFL), for others, a time to pound the pavement for a shot as a free agent, for the rest, the end to football playing days as they embark in new and different areas.

The member of the 1978 Moeller team who are wrapping up their college careers include: Tony Hunter, Notre Dame Joe Lukens, Ohio State Steve McGrew, North Carolina Wayne Morrison, Virginia Phil Schneider, Franklin Mark Suter, Merchant Marine Congratulations men, the best of luck in all your future endeavors. Rick Neal (Miami), Larry Gates (Purdue), and Jeff Wiebell (Indiana) will still be around next season as they have sat out a red-shirt year to extend their collegiate career by a season. Once again, the best of luck.

Joe Lukens was selected as Ohio State's outstanding offensive lineman for the 1982 season at the Buckeye's Annual Awards dinner last week.

At that same dinner, Buckeye head coach, Earle Bruce, was asked about the compatibility of athletics and academics at Ohio State and responded with the following quote. "That's baloney. Those who want to use their time wisely, they can do it.

Those who want to watch television and soap operas • • • I've had some of them. They've transferred south to Cincinnati."

Although he did not specify if he meant the city of or the University of, it was presumed he was referring to U.C. in light of recent transfers by area athletes from Ohio State back to U.C. They include: Linwood Marshall (West High), Bill Thomas (Aiken) and JOE APKE (MOELLER). Joe left last spring for "personal reasons" while Marshall admitted that O.S.U. stressed football too much and was not concerned about the academic development of its players. By the way, it has been confirmed that all three are making "satisfactory progress" toward a degree according to standards set by u.c. President, Henry Winkler.

If Earle Bruce has a score to settle with the Bearcats, let him do it on the field, oops, I forgot, Ohio State flatly refuses to play U.C. in ANY major sport.

As an open message to all area athletes, please keep this incident in mind when weighing your choices between colleges!!

Anyone who saw the Post or the Enquirer this past week may have noticed that Moeller is ranked 03 in the Post and 04 in the Enquirer. A revised football rating with the other teams being the Bengals, U.C., and Notre Dame? Hardly, Moeller's having a much better year. It's the papers pre-season coaches' poll for BASKETBALL. Can it be, a legitimately strong basketball team as Moeller? Wasn't basketball something the tall football players used to do just to avoid the off-season conditioning? Well that may or may not have been the case but 6th-year head coach, Dave Hammar, may have the most talented team ever to have graced the hardboards in Moeller uniforms. Five of last season's top players return from the Cinderella team of the 1982 basketball tourney where the Big Moe made it to theregional finals before falling to the eventual state champs, Roger Bacon.

So what is basketball doing in a football newsletter? Well, as usual, the football team is represented an the court and we thought now would be a good time to mention who they were. While the rest of the football players came home last weekend with few -6-

intention of spending any more time after school, a select few had to exchange their cleats for their sneakers and a pigskin for a roundball. Junior defensive back Byron Larkin headl~nes the football contingent, Byron made a name for himself in the tournament last year after he was called up from the 17-3 reserve team to contribute to the varsity, he did so in a big way averaging over 25 points per game and earning a varsity monogram while playing in only two regular season contests. Members of the supporting cast include: Steve Apke, the senior linebacker who made fans take notice of his aggressive heads-up ball playing in last years' tournament, especially in an effort to fill the void left by the injured Tim Jolley. Andy Wersel, senior wingback, a small (for basketball, at least), but very heady point guard who will be counted on this season to lead the team on the floor. Steve Spatz, another senior linebacker, his size may be a slight liability but he makes up for it in many other areas of the game.

And finally, sophomore D'Juan Francisco, is tentatively slated for varsity action. If he can do to a basketball what he can do with a football, watch out!!! The Big Moe may be spending another Saturday afternoon on the O.S.U. campus come next March.

The big question is, however, why is there a 1~" and 15-20 pound discrepancy in the sizes of Apke, Wersel and Spatz??? Surely coach Hammer doesn't have them shortened at the ankles. So who's trying to psych out who's opponent??? For the answer to these and other questions, ask a coach, but don't tell them where you got the information.

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The tears flowed unchecked from the eyes of Moeller's D'Juan Francisco. They were tears of sadness. 'And tears of joy.

Ttte Crusaders, showcasing the quickness .and strength that have made them the nation's No. 1 high school football team, had just . overpowered Massillon, 35-14, Saturday after·noon to wrap up the 1982 Division I champion$hip at Ohio Stadium. 'l'hl$ was the culmination of not just one season but rather a notable career for 41 Moeller seniors who celebrated their second title ln the last three year.s with tears and hugs and cigars and slid mischievously through a small water puddle in the end zone. It capped a perfect 13-0 season and probably assured .them of another mythical national high school championship. · The Ohio title was the sixth for the Crusaders in the last eight years and the second time they have beaten out Maaslllon, previously Ohio's most touted power.

"STARTING WAY back on March 9 of this year when I was named head coach, I dicf not think too much about this really," said Moeller coach Steve Klonne. "This is a realization of lustice of a sort. Lite does not afford this opportunity that many times. I feel real good ~bout

it."

The emotion ot the moment was difficult oo explain for the players.

"It's great; you can't explain it in words," ~aid linebacker Shane Bulluugll, who was Inlured and on the sidelines during last season's 13-0 setback in the state finals against Canton McKinley. "We :set out to do thls. We began Lhe ;eason thinking we could do it."

"It's so great," echoed quarterback John )hatter. "We've worked four years for this. It's he best feeling in the world, especially after astyear."

But the person who might have summed it tp best was the junior halfback, D'Juan Franisco, who embraced his offensive linemen · .nd didn't hide his tears.

"You have to be a part of the Moeller amily and go through it all," he said. "To be 71th all these guys, what it takes in a year ... ou can't express it.
