COLUMBUS, Ohio-An exuberant Indian Hill golf coach Bob West could have used a calculator after Saturday's final round of the boy.'s state golf tourney at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus. _Members of his Br.ave squad had just finished shooting scores of 80, two 81's and a 91, and West was frantically tryir.g to add the scores to see where his crew had finished. In a matter of seconds the coach was deluged with more help than he wanted.

"OK, 353 and 333 is ... is that what we shot yesterday?" West asked.

No matter how the coached added, he couldn't come up with a suitable total. The faulty addition made little difference as the Braves had. claimed second place with a total of 686, 15 strokes behind AA Champion Dublin and 16 strokes ahead of third place Canton Central Catholic. The Wyoming 'Cowboys grabbed fourth :With a 712 to.tal.

Moeller After graduating 20 of 22 starters from the previous year's squad, most coaches. might foresee trouble for the upcoming season.

That's not necessarny· the case at Moeller. As one area coach reminds, "They (Moeller's returnees) practiced against the national champions last year."

"The senior class of 1983 has. worked as hard as any group at Moeller to defend the state championship," sald coach Steve Klonne. .

Defense has been the hallmark of Moeller football. Preseason Street & Smlth all-America Byron Larkin ( 6-3, 185) wlll lead the Moeller defense along with Pete Sedmak {5-8, 208) and Rick Ebel (6-1, 190). .

Offensively, Klonne w lll have to replace departed quarterback John Shaffer and running back Hiawatha Francisco, along with the rest of the unit. Junior D'Juan Francisco (6-0, 180) wlll pick up the slack for his graduated broth· er. Francisco gained 1,187 yards as a· sophomore and scored 17 touchdowns. The new quarterback is junior Mark Kemphaus (6-2, 180).

HIGH-SCHOOL FOOTBALL

VERY MORNING, BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS, Gordon Wood shows up at the Palace Drugstore on Austin Avenue. There, in the back room, between shelves of shampoo and toothpaste, the head coach of the Brownwood High School Lions relaxes over coffee and holds court.

Those present include not only his assistants but a collection of old friends and leading citizens- Jack Pike, a former Lion and former Chief of Police; James Hallum, a former Lion and a florist; Royce Blackburn, the principal of the high school.

The conversation wanders slowly. Are these crazy afternoon showers never going to stop? How's coach so-and-so doing at suchand-such school? Eventually, somebody mentions the Lions, and then everyone waits for any piece of information Coach Wood is willing to surrender. "I'm worried about the offensive line," the coach says one morning, "but the Isom boy is looking good." The men in the drugstore are aware that co-captain Ronald Isom has just been given a new position as offensive guard, and they nod their heads seriously.

More than 972,000 young men across the country are playing highschool football this autumn; so are 300,000 junior-high-school students. ~ It is played at a feverish pitch and to win. But in Brownwood and in ~ some other small towns in and out of Texas, the game represents i something different. school so they will be bigger and stronger when they finally try out for the team. Physical punishment is applied routinely when players break training rules. And towns compete for high-school prospects with offers of new jobs for a player's parents or maybe a new house rent-free.

The coach is the most important man in town. He is teacher and counselor. He is role model and, in the case of Gordon Wood, the winningest coach in the history of high-school football, he is legend. Brownwood cocaptain Tommy Smith, 18 years old, was only 4 when he first heard of Coach Wood. "I knew that some people called him God," Smith said.

"And I thought it was funny. But then, the more you hear it, the more it becomes part of your thinking.''

If towns hold the coach in high esteem when the football program is successful, they know few extremes 34

in demonstrating their disapproval for a losing team. Ronnie Davenport, the coach at Crosby, Tex., and two of his assistants wore bulletproof vests during a game earlier this month after they had received several telephoned death threats. The team had won only one of its first six games. "I could understand people taking football seriously because I always have," said Davenport. "But why would anyone want to kill someone over a game?"

Sociologists are trying to answer that question. They are concerned about the effects of the pressurized atmosphere of high-school football on towns and their young people. In Yonkers, N.Y., a youngster with a long history of heart problems managed to win a spot on the junior varsity without a physical examination; he collapsed and died on the field. "We speak about the Soviet Union not giv-

ing choices," says Jay J. Coakley, professor of sociology at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

"These kids are being raised to feel that if they can chew gum and run, they have to play football.''

In Texas, debate now rages as never before. A statewide committee on education, headed by the Dallas billionaire H. Ross Perot, is advocating wide-sweeping changes that would cut football budgets and de-emphasize the role of sports in education. "The problem," said Perot, "is these little towns where people think that the world begins and ends with their school football. Football doesn't broaden a child and make him better.

It just focuses him more on his narrow world."

of their necks and the new edges of fresh-cut grass pricked their forearms. The first day of practice is never easy. It was about 98 degrees on the field and 125 degrees inside the rubber pads of their helmets. "This is where we'll find out who the men are," they heard their coach say.

The players were dressed in shorts and T-shirts and wore their white helmets. The tackling wouldn't begin until the end of the week.

"Set. Go," an assistant coach shouted, and the players dropped to their toes and their finger tips, their bodies stretched out, ready for action. The coach pointed a football left and the players rolled over. Then right, and they rolled right. Then he pointed right again and the players were confused by the break in the pattern. Two Lions eollided as they rolled in opposite directions. Coach Wood was leaning against the goal post. He wore the

school colors- white T-shirt and maroon shorts - and a whistle around his neck.

For two and a half weeks, twice a day, two and a half hours at a time, five days a week and once more on Saturday, they ran, kicked, tumbled and snapped their knees high. As in other states, coaches in Texas cannot send their teams out onto the field more than twice a day, but the rule says nothing about the length of each practice. In football-conscious towns like Brownwood, two hours of indoor blackboard instruction and six hours of drills outside in the 100-degree Texas summer is standard.

These exercises are designed to build endurance and teach obedience.

Football, by its nature, is a sport that demands a singular kind of strength.

Only six out of 22 players on the field actually run and throw and do the scoring. Everyone else's task is to

move bodies from one space to another, play after play. What's more, the game demands self-sacrifice. Unlike basketball or hockey, football does not encourage freedom of expression. Players are expected to conform to orders from the coach, to act as instruments in his master plan.

"There's not a lot of fun in it," said Jonathan A. Brower, professor of sociology at California State University at Fullerton. "It is discipline for discipline's sake. The athletic field is the place where a student is going to be brought in line."

By the end of their first practice, the Lions itched from rolling in the grass. They were relieved at first when the rain started falling harder, but it seemed now only to cut down on the spaces in the air they needed for breathing. The younger Lions, most of whom would end up playing for the junior varsity, spoke little and

watched the senior Lions for clues as to how to react to heat and thirst. But no one provided an inspiring exampie, not even Tommy Smith, the 6-foot-5-inch senior, his clear hazel eyes now red and stinging from sweat and his knee brace squeaking and clanking. They all felt the same crawly sensation, caused by hot rain and invisible bugs creeping on their faces. Ninety minutes into the practice, during a short break, a rainbow appeared to the west, behind the twostory high school, promising an end to the storm; but out on the field, the players did not notice.

Under the helmets, their faces were flushed white and pink from the summer heat, like the faces of old men.

Clustered around the water cooler, without the shoulder pads and hip pads and thigh pads and knee pads to enlarge them, the players were little people with shiny, oversized heads.

Five days later, the Brownwood Lions tramped onto the field slowly, noisily,like cattle. Now they wore the look of football players: thighs and shoulders overlarge, and feet slightly pigeoned to accommodate 25 pounds of equipment.

The players kicked up the dirt and dust as they made their way toward the coach, who was waiting in the center of the field. As usual, the fathers were there, standing shoulder to shoulder by the edge of the grass, and because today was special, the mothers watched, too. No one applauded, but as with a graduation ceremony, they searched for their children, squinting and then finding them in the crowd.

"Mine's the real bulky one," said

Robert Baker. But they were all bulky. As the players knelt on one knee around Coach Wood, they fell quiet, waiting for him to speak.

"As you know," said the coach, "this is the first scrimmage of the year. This is for real. We want to see how you all adjust to hitting. Now I don't want you holding back." Then he added with measured softness: "Remember though, I have two goals. To win and to have brotherhood."

BEFORE 1960, WHEN GORDON Wood arrived in town, hardly anyone in Texas had heard of Brownwood. It was just another anonymous highway town along Route 377, ~65 miles southwest of Dallas. Since then, the

Brownwood Lions have won seven state championships, and the town has changed and prospered.

School Superintendent James Lancaster lists the football team as an important factor in the growth of the population from 16,000 to 20,000 in the last decade. Families have moved to Brownwood to give their boys a chance to be a Lion. "That has increased school enrollment and tax money," he said, "and that has created a better education for our children.''

The 8,000-seat Gordon Wood Stadium was built in 1972 with the help of a $100,000 interest-free bank loan and donations from local companies and from townspeople. When a Lions game sells out, the gate may reach

$35,000, with the money split between the two schools. Half of the Lions' 10game schedule is played at home.

The team's winning record has also changed attitudes among townspeople. Football has always been popular in the state. "Coming from Texas, that's the way it is," said Jerome Smith, Tommy's father, "people here being rugged from working the land and liking a rugged sport. But Gordon Wood made it something special."

The parents' commitment can be felt at the suppers and ice-cream picnics they organize. It shows up in decisions to have their sons repeat grades so they'll be heavier and stronger when they reach high-school age. It can be heard on the sidelines at practice time.

During one practice session, a group of parents talked about a hospital in Massillon, Ohio, that sends home a football with the family of every newborn son. Moran Pounds, whose son, David, is the Lions' quarterback, interrupted. "Here," he said, "we buy a football before the baby is born to make sure it's a boy."

The talk turned to another high school nearby. The school had just lost its star quarterback, and two highly rated quarterbacks from other communities had joined the team.

"Some coincidence," said one parent sarcastically.

Jesse Ratliff, 49, the owner and operator of a steel warehouse company, who once played for Gordon Wood, commented: "We're just

trying to play football here and these things go on. It makes me not trust anyone.''

But then he added: "Winning is what matters here. And why not. I don't like it when people say, 'If you had fun, yo~,twon.'"

Ratliff also objects to those who criticize Brownwood and its focus on football. "We are not by any shakes crazy people," he says. "Football can solve a lot of society's ills. It is the one place where the son of the poorest man in town can compete on an equal level with the son of the richest man in town."

Colorado University's Jay Coakley, who has studied high-school sports, says that football "represents for people the way they would like society to be. On the football field, hard work pays oft perhaps the way it has not for these people in their lives."

According to Brower, of California State University, football parents believe they are acting in the best interests of their children. "Most parents say that they will let the kid do what he wants," Mr. Brower says, "but they're the first ones on the sidelines. In the small towns, the tradition is too strong to control."

Yet some Brownwood parents are concerned. Watching her son play, Erma Pounds commented: "I don't worry about David. I worry about kids like David's older brother who hurt his ankle and couldn't play high-school ball until his senior year. He was miserable for three years.

"I like football, but I don't think everyone considers what happens to kids who don't make the team. My son had no self-esteem until he played with the Lions. That to me is the problem. Why can't our sons feel good without football?"

D "I've never stopped to think about why I enjoy being a Brownwood Lion," said Tommy Smith. "It's something you do. I suppose I would never be able to find out just how much I love football until someone, somehow, took the Brownwood Lions away."

Tommy was sitting around the kitchen table with his mother and father. His yearold brother, David, was crawling on the table, which was actually a table-tennis board set on top of a pool table. Mrs. Smith said, "I know it's a little different, but this way, I could always keep 38

my eyes on the kids and it kept them in the house.''

The Smiths live in a ranchstyle house in the town of May, next door to the farmhouse that has been in the Smith family for more than 100 years. Jerome Smith works as a technician for Superior Cable Company.

Tommy drives the 25 miles to Brownwood every school day - there are no rules against students' transferring into the Brownwood school district. In spite of the commuting, the classes, the football, he finds time for playing the piano and composing his own tunes. He prides himself on being an A student.

Off the field, Tommy Smith presents a self-contained, quiet, unassuming personality. Yet he has trouble sleeping the night before a game, and as player and co-captain of the Lions, he is totally involved. He calls meetings to chastise the other players when he feels they are not hustling enough. He accepts without question the physical punishment of players who break training rules. He takes part in the initiation of younger players into the Lions.

During the ritual, the newcomers are stripped and forced to run about the field until they are chased down by six or seven senior players. A cream that produces a burning sensation, generally used to soothe sore muscles, is applied to the genitals of the new players.

For Tommy Smith, the best part of practice is the hitting.

For him and his teammates, it is the primary attraction, to give and absorb punishment.

When he sets himself on the line of scrimmage, he tries to intimidate with a fixed stare and a slight grin.

"Hitting in football," said Thad Ellis, a center and punter, "is like running 100 yards very fast and hitting a tree dead on. Very thrilling."

Steve Fryar, a senior Lion, said: "I don't know what it is.

I go to school all day long with these people and then I love going out and beating the heck out of them. I haven't figured out what it all means yet.''

He is sure, though, of the game's significance in his life. "Football is our way of breaking the apron strings," he said. "On the field we can be our own man."

A Brownwood Lion is a Brownwood Lion all the time.

There are only about 80, including the junior varsity, among the 1,050 students at Brownwood, and everyone knows who they are. In his

very appearance, a Brownwood Lion is separate. He dresses for school in his letter jacket most days. On Fridays, game days, he wears the team maroon sports coat to class.

And in Brownwood, where the young men usually eventually settle in town or just a few towns away, and most go to work for one of the big companies in the area, being a Brownwood Lion is the greatest distinction they ever know. "It is," said Fryar, "a dream come true."

As they entered their senior year, many of the Lions faced important decisions. In the kitchen of the Smith home, Tommy brought out two shoe boxes filled mostly with letters from universities. As he watched over his wandering, diapered brother, his parents dipped into the boxes.

One brochure from Oklahoma State University read in lively, colored type: "Live and learn at O.S.U., Where People Are Important." Another came from Texas Christian University, the Fightin' Frogs - one of Tommy's leading choices because it had sent him brochures that concentrated more on academic subjects and less on football. "The only bad thing," said Tommy, "is that I have trouble seeing myself go from a Lion to a Frog."

Tommy's brother Jesse, 19, a former Brownwood allstate tight end, is a sophomore at Texas Tech University. Last season, he was "redshirted" - allowed to work out with the team but not be an official team member.

This practice creates space on a roster for upperclassmen and allows the redshirted player to be eligible for an extra year later.

According to Tom Yeager of the Legislative Services division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, there are no rules preventing redshirting. "It gives a kid five years to play four," said Yeager. "Coaches give kids time to grow and besides, the player knows the conditions when he enters the school.

It's his choice."

It seems likely that will happen to Tommy Smith, who was not held back in an earlier grade. (In interviews with 50 of the 83 Brownwood Lions, 16 said they were behind a year, though not in all cases because of sports considerations.) "My brother told me everything changes," he said. "They'll do everything to get you to come, but then the minute you're there, they are concentrating on next year's recruits."

Tommy knows a few things, but he does not know that many of the schools that want him and many that don't systematically send out letters that are so formularized they change in content and tone by the week, sometimes by the day, as the hunt for recruits progresses. Says Ken Dabbs, recruiting coordinator of the University of Texas: "We keep a prospect-suspect list.

We keep the prospects hot with many letters, sometimes two, three times a week. We also try to get hand-written notes to them. We keep the suspects lukewarm. And we are concerned about academics. Recruiting is like selling cars or insurance policies. If you sell 10 policies in one week, you have sold yourself as well as your company."

Greg Meyer, recruiting coordinator at Arizona State University, adds: "The most important thing is to know who has bigger influence on the kid. Mom or Dad. Then try to figure out what you're dealing with and get to know the family. A basic sell job.

It's better to know the team you're playing against."

The N.C.A.A. within the last year has instituted new rules restricting the number of opportunities a coach has to meet with a high-school player and banning altogether face-to-face meetings between alumnus and prospect. Of the 18 schools currently on probation with the N.C.A.A., and of the nearly 60 that are under investigation, most are in trouble because alumni clubs, coaches and booster clubs have offered money, jobs and other favors to high-school seniors.

Tommy is not sure whether he is a prospect or a suspect.

He is worried that the brace he wears on his left knee for strained ligaments will scare a way the recruiters.

After his parents were done showing the letters from colleges, Tommy brought out one more letter - this one from Coach Gordon Wood and staff just as the season was about to begin. It read in part: "We'd like to .. .leave you with this one thought: 'Self pity is a roommate with cowardice. â&#x20AC;˘ Stay away from feeling sorry for yourself.

dents. The coach began receiving angry telephone calls in the middle of the night.

Worst of all for the man who was one of the most esteemed members of the community, people ignored him when they met him in the supermarket or at the bank, actually turning their heads away.

Typically, the average coach is no more loyal to the community. He knows he must put together a long series of winning seasons before he can hope to achieve the goal of head coach at a college. The credo of the coach, as expressed by Jim Wacker, coach at Texas Christian University, is simple and direct: "You move if you win, you move if you lose."

The importance of winning is recognized by all concerned. The school principal, Blackburn, is one of Coach Wood's greatest admirers.

"He gives the kids a feeling of importance, of pride," Blackburn said. "The whole community has that pride."

Nevertheless, when Blackburn was asked if Coach Wood would be the coach today had he not won when he first arrived in town, the principal responded, "No, he would not be."

The Brownwood Lions are doing well this season, if not spectacularly. As of the middle of October, they had won four games and lost three, but they were 3 and 1 against schools in their own football district. "So far," said Coach Wood, "it has been a peaceful season."

Elsewhere in high-school football, things have not been so peaceful. The game has continued to engender contrOversy across the country and for all sorts of reasons. Since the season began, two players have died and one was paralyzed because of football-related injuries. In the Yonkers High School incident last month, Fernando A. Guedes, the 17-year-old junior-varsity player, died in a game against Scarsdale High School. The Yonkers school had not obtained parental permission for Guedes to play and was not aware of his history of heart disease. No full physical examination was given. Joan M. Raymond, the Yonkers Superintendent of

Schools, transferred five members of the Yonkers High School staff, charging that they had been responsible for "procedures that broke down."

At Crosby High School in Texas, disgruntled fans threatened to kill the coaching staff, but the game went on. The players were given the option of staying home.

Instead, they showed up and their team won its second game of the season.

Much of the furor in Texas has centered around Kyle Burns, a 13-year-old football player who is repeating the seventh grade because his father wants him to play football at a major college. The father's blatant intent generated great press coverage, helping to spur a statewide self-examination of the longstanding problem. At a hearing two weeks ago before the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of high-school athletics, H. Ross Perot, the chairman of the Governor's Select Committee on Public Education, proposed a ban on new sports programs and sweeping cuts in sports budgets. He sup. ports a proposal by the Legislative Council of the league that players be required to pass four classes rather than three, the current quota.

Largely in response to the Kyle Burns case, the council has also suggested that the "five-year rule," which allows only five years of athletic eligibility to a player once he reaches the eighth grade, be amended to include a sixth year of eligibility, starting in the seventh grade.

But the proposal fails to address the problem of gradeschool children who are held back or delayed a year, sometimes even before they begin the first grade.

"I think Mr. Perot has got his marbles messed up," said Gordon Wood. "If a kid. can't read and write by the time he is in eighth grade, whether he plays football or not won't change anything."

The coach says of Perot, "I don't think he knows what it's like for these kids who may not get anywhere without football. If . you take that away, you'regoing to hurt the very kids you're trying to help." Then he added thoughtfully, "Helping kids is all it's about." â&#x20AC;˘

said the Government wouldn't let him study foreign languages (apparently a soughtafter field because it provides an opportunity to go abroad, if only to other Communist countries), taught himself rudimentary French and, with it, pleaded with me to take a letter out to an uncle he thought was living in the United States. "I am always hungry," he said.

The Government gives students an allowance of 36 dong a month. The iced coffee we drankcost25; a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of pork costs 110. The average civil servant, I was told, makes 200 dong a month.

Le Mai, a Foreign Ministry official, warned me that I would not find much in the stores for people to buy, even if they had money. "You will see we are selling goods of very poor quality, but we are trying to produce all basic commodities by ourselves, and you have to start somewhere," he said.

The main department store in Hanoi offered a pathetic collection of sprockets, chains, nuts and bolts for bicycles. A few garishly colored plastic sandals were displayed on unfinished wooden shelves; they cost 180 dong, or nearly $20. Tin cooking pots cost 350 dong, more than a month's salary.

Do-Xuan Oanh told me that, because of the continuing pressure from the Chinese, "it may take a century for us to restore our economy. I do not share the view that life is only meaningful if it is accompanied by pain and hardship." He made it sound like a dissenting view.

Though I was surprised by how little evidence of damage there was from the American bombing in the city of Hanoi itself, I asked to meet Vietnamese who had been through the Christmas 1972 bombing, the heaviest of the war, which President Nixon had ordered to force Hanoi to accept the terms of a ceasefire. I was taken to Kham Thien Street, close to the railroad station, and all but destroyed in a B-52 raid apparently targeted on the station at 10: 30 the night of Dec. 26.

The raid killed 283 people and wounded 266.

There is a monument to the victims of the Christmas bombing on the site of a ruined house. A statue of a woman holding a dead child, it bears the inscription, "Indignation at the American aggressors. ••
