Princeton and Moeller track teams flying b/Les Wilson Track' & field fans here. · ~hould ,·have known . that . the fortunes of Pnnceton's Vikings would take a swift upturn when the. · . announcement came last year· that· Ken Meibers had-been' secured as head coach at the .Chester Road sch'ool.

After all, where Coach · · Meibers· goes, track sue- · cess follows. He develop. ed teams at Colerain High School that were leaderd in this region perennially. So when he took · over after Frank Shands retired at PHS, things .were certain to happen.

It hasn't taken long.

Princeton's campus is· jammed with raw talent, some of it undeveloped · until this "track genius" · came along. In one short span. his Vikings are now ~merging aa the kingpins of local track & field.

Robert Thompson is a speedster who has the ,· area's best times this

year in the 220 meter dash, 22.8 seconds and in the 400 meter dash, 50.8.

He is second in the 100 meter dash, 11 seconds flat.

Besides Thompson, Coach Meibers can call on Scott Saunders in the 100 meters. He has also ran an 11 seconds flat 100 and Joe Crusde has done it in 11.1. Vince M unlin is a fraction behind Thompson in the 200 meters at 23.1 ·and in the 400, Robert Hargrove flashes the distance in 51.3 and George Lawson in 52.3.

Pa.t Dukes is among the city's leaders in the 800 meter nm with a 2:05 effort and Dave Denoyer ranks among the best in the 1600 meter run with a 4:37. Eu Haye is ranked in the 110 meter high hurdles at 15.5 and Darrell· Coggins in the 300 meter low hurdles at 41.3.

Princeton's 400 meter and 1600 meter relay teams are ranked high.

the 400 meter team is the area's best. Matt Daniels is among the high jump leaders with a 6.2 leap.

Two more Vikings have posted the season's best marks in the events too.

Mike Askren had hurled the discus 151 feet and Mark W alruin is a pole vaulter who has cleared the bar at 12 feet, six inches. · It became obvious to track buffs that Princeton was on the move when the Vikings won their own Viking Relays two weeks ago. Or at . least they tied usual champ Dayton Roth for first place, each garnering 47 points. .

With that imposing string of titles, Moeller rolled up 132 points to 122 for Elder. Purcell Marian was third with 51 points, Roger Bacon had 40 and La Salle came in last with 39.

ild-mannered Gene Bartow succeeded John Wooden at UCLA, was criticized for winning 52 games in two seasons but zero national championsips, and decid_ed he'd be happier starting from scratch at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where basketball was only a club and intramural sport when he arrived.

Soft-spoken Phil Bengtson replaced Vince Lombar- · di at the head of the Pack, lost more games than he won with the same Packers players Lombardi browbeat into back-to-hack Super Bowl championships, and was booed out of Green Bay, and eventually out of football. ·.

Why on earth, then, would solid, reserved Ted Bacigalupo-Bachi to his friends-want to follow Gerry Faust's act at Moeller High? Doesn't he know <that legends cast long shadows?

"I don't think anybody can stand up .here and say they're like Gerry Faust," Bachi said last December when he accepted high school football's higli voltage .coaching job. With an understandably cotton mouth he promised he'd try his best to keep Moeller stock~d with victories and championships while the buil~er of the dy- . nasty tried a hot seat of his own at fabled Notre Dame.

It was all so reminiscent of Bartow back in 1975 when handed a heritage of 10 national championships in 12 years. "No one r~places John Wooden as John Wood~m." he said upoh accepting a four-year contract to try. "I hope to keep the high-quality program going at UCLA. I hope we can win, and it will be recognizable very quickly if we don't." · All winter and spring, Bacigalupo said, over and over again: "I don't want to be compared to Gerry. I want people to compare our programs.'' ~ But no one was ·listening. Or at least no one was hearing. · "I really can't believe the questions some .people ask," he said a few days into his first suinmer practice as 'head coach. Friends and strangers alike were not-sopolitely asking him why he would ever put himself in the hopeless position of trying to match Faust's record at Moeller, and what he would do when Moeller lost a few games, and how he would feel when people started comparing him to Faust. The tone of the last ql.lestion implied that, inevitably, the comparison would be unfavorable. · . "If they're people I know," he said, "I try to be as polite as I can. If I don't know them, I just tell them to go blow smoke. · .

"I know the thing about Gerry is going to be with us all year," Bachi reflected at the time. "I know it's something I'll be questioned about a lot. But I don't mind that, as long as they're fair questions. You spend 13 years of your life with someone, and it's pretty hard to get tired of talking about him."

There is no doubt in Ted Bacigalupo's mind how his stewardship will be judged.

"If we're successful this firstyear with our goals, the winning attitude will continue and the program will stay as good or improve. It comes down to winning. If we win, it will stay the same."

But can Moeller win without Faust? Can it win 90 of its next 93 games, as it did in Faust's last eight seasons?

Can it win 91% of its games for the next 20 years, as it did during two decades under Faust?

Faced with similarly imposing numbers at UCLA, Bartow quickly found himself "coaching not to lose instead of coaching to win." Perhaps that .will be Ted Bacgalupo's fate, too, but he wasn't feeling such strain as the first season approached.

"His blood pressure's lower than it's ever· been," Bachi's wife, Rita, reported in August. She was taking it all rather calmly, too. "I figure, he's been at this for 13 years; he knows what he's doing." . Bachi decided several years ago that he couldn't change the outcome of a game by losing sleep the night before kickoff. will come each time he alone must sustain his players on the field.

"You can't replace the electricity that followed Gerry," Faust's successor accepts. "But carrying on without him is a tremendous challenge. The players are looking at it that way, and the coaches are, too, and the teachers, and the boosters and the parents.

"The kids have another incen-

tive. It's their turn. They want to be as successful as the teams be.fore them. The seniors have worked three years for this season."

Unquestionably, to compare Ted Bacigalupo and Gerry Faust is to contrast them .. Bachi can do a pretty funny gravel-voiced imitation of Faust, but he isn't apt to separate the cars of a freight train · blocking a railroad crossing, stop the takeoff of a commercial j etliner, or even order sideline Hail Marys with every snap of the ball.

Bachi does not slap people on the back until their spines rattle, and he doesn't call to them from a block away. · But he is not colorless, odorless and tasteless, either. There is strength to this barrel-chested man of 35, quiet, thoughtful, determined strength. His halftime talks were second only to Faust's own ·

Bachi was a high ·school athlete of some note in his native Northern Kentucky, a baseball catcher of major league potential and Newport Catholic's most valuable player as a fullback. linebacker and punter in football, He joined the M()eller coaching staff in. 1968 after graduating from Xavier University, and earned everyone's respect, and their attention, that first summer. Nothing Sinister Behind Bacigalupo's Le3ving ·

Once before when he lfaS an assistant under Gerry Faust, Bacigalupo left coaching to pursue his business.

Have to think that there's- something more behind Ted Bacigalupo leaving Moeller High School, right? After all, who would resign one of the country's most prestigious high school football posts to retrieve golf balls from water hazards? Something fishy is going on here.

'Fraid not folks.

You can read everything and anything you want into the Bacigalupo's exodus after one season, but the simple matter is he picked his blossoming private business over coaching.

Once before when he was an assistant coach under Gerry Faust, Bacigalupo left the coaching ranks to pursue his business fulltime.

1 His departure underscores the amount of time required to maintain Moeller's highcaliber program. Bacigalupo realized he couldn't do both and opted for one over the other. Put aside any-thoughts of too much pressure, that he was forced out because he lost in the state championship.

Much like last year, two questions now arise: 1) Who will be the new coach? 2) Is this the demise of "Mighty Moe?" To answer the second question first: Not likely.

him?" said assistant coach Mark BJelac. "But we did. The kids are not as apprehensive as they were last year, especially since we're going to stay inside for the new coach."

Assistant coach Terry Lichtenberg echoed those feelings: "Last year, it was like, 'Oh, my God, who can do all this?' But Ted came in and quieted the waves," he said. "If we're successful on the field, it will all fall into place. Since we didn't ~in the state championship, the kids have a cause and something.to rally around."

Now, who will be the new coach? The position will stay inside the present staff. Both quarterback and freshman head coach Jeff Liebert and defensive co-ordinator Steve ' · Klonne have indicated they will apply. There are two other possible candida~s in :...-r""

cfitenberg and Jim Lippencott, but both have been at Moeller less than two years and that will work against them.

That narrows the field to Liebert and Klonne.

"A lot of things go into this job. It's not an average high school job," Liebert said. "I probably know the job as well as anybody. I've been here under Gerry and Bacigalupo. But that doesn't necessarily make you qua!ified."

LIEBERT ASSUMED one of Faust's many hats last season when Gerry left for Notre Dame. The 34-year-old coach was named assistant athletic director and was put in charge of the program's fund-raising. He continued coaching the freshmen team where he has compiled a record of 52-3-4. He has been at Moeller for nine years.

Liebert, a 1965 graduate of Louisville St. Xavier, graduated from the University of Kentucky where he was a student-trainer.

After a short stint at Procter & Gamble, he returned to Kentucky to earn his teacher's certlfcate, then went onto Moeller. Married with three chlldren and another on the way, Liebert is well familiar with the time and pressure involved with the program .

Ted Bacigalupo, just one season into the head · football coaching position at Moeller High School left vacant by Gerry Faust, stepped down from that post Thursday afternoon..

Reading from a prepared statement, ath, letic director Mike Cameron said Moeller principal. Rev. Lawrence Krusllng, "announced that Ted Bacigalupo will be leaving at the end or the current school year."

The ~year-old coach has decided to pursue his business outside the school. Bacigalupo operates a used golf ball sales and retrieval business. Whether or not he wlll continue in his teaching capacity, he w1ll decide in the spring.

THE MOST likely candidates at this stage to replace Bacigalupo are defensive co-ordinator Steve Kloone or freshman head coach and quarterback coach Jeff Liebert. Cameron anticipated that a replacement would be named within the next two weeks.

The decision was not an easy one tor Bacigalupo.

"It was a very ditticult decision to give up something like you have at Moeller. It's very, very unique and very, very special," he said.

"Anytime you make a decision to stop being involved there, it's a tough decision."

Bacigalupo's resignation was met with mostly surprise, though his assistants that could be contacted acknowledged they weren't totally taken aback. ¡ "I was kind of surprised he lett after. his first year," said offensive backfield coach Paul Smith, who resigned that post at the end of I this season. "I would not have been surprised it he had gone one more year. I do know how much the golf ball business adds to his salary.

"I thought seeing him of late, he looked relaxed and I thought he was getting into the routine and enjoying it," Smith said.

Cameron was "surprised? Yes and no," by Bacigalupo's decision.

"I was surprised because I thought after the first year he realized and knew how much of adjustment he would have to make with his business and with football," Cameron said. "I thought he would continue to coach.

"But I know his business and he has worked on it from the time he was in high school â&#x20AC;˘ and it's a nice business," Cameron noted.

The new coach will make the third one at one of the most visible high school football programs in the nation in three years. cameron, as athletic director, will have input in selecting the new coach and operating the program overall.

"Naturally, I would like to see stability in the head coaching position," he said. "I'm optimistic that we can bring someone in to continue it. The people on are staff are wellqualified. And knowing how the kids reacted when Gerry left, we're all confident in how they'll respond to it."

Bacigalupo announced his decision to his players Thursday after school.

Ted Bacigalupo is waiting for that special feeling new coaches ·are supposed to have before their first 'game, especially the ones who relplace coaching legends like ''Baci" :did in suceeding Gerry Faust at 1 Moeller.

I 1 "I haven't felt it yet," said Baci, galupo. "I really haven't had time to even think about it because I've been so busy getting everything (Ofrom players to helmets) ready for Friday.

You know there's a lot of anticipation, but there's alway anticipation :before the first game. I imagine it'll , hit me sometime Friday." · But Moeller's players did have a special feeling this week as they pre. pared for their opening game Friday at Centerville.

"They have really worked hard, from December through the spring during their conditioning program, and harder than ever since practice ,started," said Bacigalupo. They feel they have something to prove.

They're out to prove to everyone that Moeller is as good as always."

THE CRUSADERS, who begin the season with a 33-game winning streak, looked good in their three varsity scrimmages by defeating Upper Arlington 28-0, Findlay 33-7 and Fairfield 27-0. But they also looked good in last year's scrimmage before getting the scare of their life against Centerville before winning 20-14 at Nippert Stadium. Rob Brown, who is one of eight starters back at Moeller, made a game-saving tackle late in the fourth quarter when Centerville's quarterback ran an option through the right side of the Moeller defense.

"Cen.terville broke a couple long plays against us in that game," recalled Bacigalupo, remembering a 70-yard touchdown run by Centerville back Derek Minor.

Minor graduated, so that's .one worry Bacigalupo doesn't have this year. But the Elks still have their · explosive veer offense.

"Centerville is a good program ,with a good coach (Bob Gregg) and it, 'wasn't a matter of us not having respect for them," said Bacigalupo.

"We were a young club last year after losing 19 of 22 starters from the year before. We had a lot of players who had never played in a varsity game before. Last year's team improved a

The drama choked up first-year coach Ted Bacigalupo. The drama made quarterback Mike Willging talk as quickly as his heart raced. The drama saddled Princeton coach Pat Mancuso with perhaps one of his toughest losses. Never l;lefore in the previQus 17 meetings of the two schools had a Viking team led Moeller by 10 points. · AND IT all came down to the final play.

Moeller trailed 17-13, just a tick past a minute left and 37 yards that might have l(>oked like miles from victory. · But the Crusaders pushed and passed. A fourth-and-one had to be converted on the 6-yard line. It was. But with less than 20 seconds left, guard Tim Odom Jumped oft·sides. Instead of first-and-goal ~m the 6, it was now 11. . .

But Moeller assistant coach Paul Smith .had no fear. He called the delat' pass to tight end Bobby Hill.

The play broke, wingback Jeff Clouse pulled the coverage with him, HUl dropped In under the linebackers. Willging ran to ·the left. He passed. It was overthrown! No. .Hill made a dramatic one-handed catch ·and pranced into the end zone. It brought :~andemonium. It brought triumph. It ·tirought tears to both coaches' eyes. . · "Last year, we played Elder and they ·were coming baCk. It was up to their extra ·point and we blocked it," recalled Willging, ·who quarterbacked the Crusadrss last year. '"But this was more dramatic than last year. ·Princeton had everything on the line. We :had a perfect season on the line. There's no .doubt, no doubt this was a championship .game. This was like the state finals."
