Banquet bestows awards , The 1986 Moeller Football Team members have received number of honors and awards since the end of the season last fall. This issue is devoted to honoring the many young .men who have received recognition during the past few months. The Moeller Football Banquet was held at the Cincinnati Hyatt Hotel last December. The Captain's mothers and others again left all attending impressed with the operation they put together. Senior players receive helmet awards and a number of other awards, plaques, and even some hand decorated items from the Moeller family. The Captains parents worked for a full year to make this a meaningful event. Their fundraisers and post-game parties brought the 1986 family closer together as well as provide funds for the banquet. A special thanks should reach out to Mr. and Mrs. Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Gahr, Mr. and Mrs. King, Mr. and Mrs. Purvis, and Mr. and Mrs. Schaffner. Listed below are the 1986 Football Award Winners:

;rhis past winter, Scott Schaffner received one of the highest honors a high school athlete could receive: he was named a High School All-American Football Player. But that was not all for Scott. He went one further. Not only was he named to an All-American team, but he was also chosen as the number one High School :Male Athlete of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Washington, D.C. Scott recefved the prestigious Dial Award for this honor. We have reprinted the Touchdown Club program that honored Scott and other award winners at their 52nd Annual Dinner this past winte:r.
THE DIAL AWARD Male High School Athlete of the Year
national award who plays center. Scott's combined statistics for his junior and senior years are impressive and have caused a stir among college recruiters-226 completions out of 390 attempts (only eight interceptions) for a 58 percent success rate, a total of 3,249 yards and 27 touchdowns. Scott is quick. running the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. Scott also is a talented baseball player who sometimes plays second base and has earned AllCity selection as a designated hitter. "Baseball lets my body rest after football." Scott says, acknowledging that life as a 6-foot-3, 185-pound quarterback sometimes can be rough. He played basketbail in junior high but concentrated on footbail during high school. He still plays intrar, lural 3-on-3 basketball with friends. He is as dedicated to studying as he is ~o sports. Scott is in Moeller's advanced placement program for honor students and has a perfect 4.0 grade point average, even with a class load that includes political theory, calculus and advanced physics.
Purpose of the Dial Award
Scott Schaffner Scott Schaffner is one young man you would want your daughter tb date. He is one of those allAmerican boys with manners, poise, looks. a nice family, varied interests and specific goals for his promising future. He lives by a strict set of selfimposed guidelines which he finds easy to live by, because he doesn't want to disappoint anybody, least of all himself. Scott credits his high standards to the strong relationships he has with his parents. teachers and coaches. "People around you can make you do things you never thought possible," Scott says. "They can motivate you in so many ways. My parents are both hard-working and they never leave things unfinished. I learned from that and realized I could do the same thing." As a football quarterback, Scott needed that kind of confidence to succeed-especially at Cincinnati's Moeller High School. a tradition-rich school with a reputation for turning out great quarterbacks. Scott first started as quarterback in the fifth game of his junior season on a team dominated by seniors. Undaunted, he took charge of the team and led them through the playoffs and to the state championship. "There was a lot of pressure in the playoffs because I thought: If I throw this pass and it is intercepted, that could end the season for these sentors. I couldn't let them down," he says. Although the team didn't retain the championship in 1986, Scott performed well, even breaking a school record in one game with 299 yards passing, completing 16-for-23 with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Perhaps his success was due in part to the on-field support of his fraternal twin, Todd,
The Dial Award was estaotished in 1979 to recognize outstanding achievement in athletic competition by high school scholars. Each year. a nationwide panel of coaches. college recruiters and sports writers nom1nates a field of candidates for evaluation. From there. two are chosen: the best male and female athlete/scholars of the year. Selections are based on academic and civic achievement as well as athletic performance. Since Dial Soap was introduced in 1948. it has earned a reputation for excellence and has remained the most popular deodorant soap in America.
