Moeller~~~ E-~j--•11: The Crusaders face tough competition from rivals in the Greater Catholic League, but are hoping for a strong season. Last year, Moeller finished fourth in the GCL and fifth in Division I district competition. The team graduated seven runners and return about 20, including four varsity runners. Senior co-captain Kenny Dunbar will be the top runner, coming off a strong track , season in which he won the league and Division I district championship in the two-mile run and took second in the mile. Coach Jerry Kombrinck said he'll also look to sophomore Kevin Schwarz to assist the team. As a freshmen, he captured a fourth-place finish in the mile at the Division I championship. Senior co-captain Pat Sullivan returns to the field after missing most of the track season with injuries. He was Moeller's secondplace cross country runner last year, Kombrinck said. While the team is young, Kombrinck said they're performing well. His main concern is deciding who the fifth runner will be and moving his time closer to that of the other 1 four runners. Despite the unanswered questions, Kom· • brinck predicted this team will surprise many. "I think we're going to be very good," Kombrinck said.

Padgett rebounds to reach goal BY DAVE SCHUITE 'Illc Cincinnati Enquirer Expectations were high for La Salle's Steve Padgett this season. The third place finisher at the 1998 Division I state cross country meet, Padgett sat out the track season with an injury and didn't want to graduate without winning a state championship. In an outstanding individual effort, Padgett sprinted the final half-mile to claim the Division I title and The Enquirer's Runner of the Year. "It's an honor to be included with Doug (Bockenstette) as La Salle's only state cross country champions." Known as La Salle's all-time best runner, Bockenstette won the 1993 state cross country championship and followed with 1994 state track championships in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. Padgett, who signed a letter of intent with Michigan State last week, also plans to go after the 1,600 and 3,200 titles this spring. Although St Xavier's 1998 state champion cross country team returned only three starters, coach Larry Merkel put together a solid season. Merkel built the team around juniors Andy Weitmarschen, Ryan Busse and Tim King. The Bombers went on to finish second at state after claiming the district title and a first ever regional champion~hip. "It's nice to be champions but I'll take second place," Merkel said. "We have our top three runners back and several sophomores. Next year we should be strong again." Corey Scheadler took another step forward in a quest for the Division II state cross country championship. An Eastern Brown junior, Scheadler was 77th at the state meet as a freshman, 13th as a junior and finished 12th this season. This effort earned Scheadler The Enquirer's Division II-III Runner of the Year. Again this season, Bob Kitchen led Madeira to the Cincinnati Hills League and Division III district championship but fell one place short of making it to state, taking fifth at the regional. Kitchen earned Enquirer Division II-III Coach of the Year.

Homan leads pack in Div. I; Engel tops in Div.II-m BY DAVE SCHUITE The Cincinnati Enquirer Anderson junior Chelsea Homan, with her surprise win in the Division I state cross country meet, has earned The Enquirer's Division I Runner of the Year. Second in the regional meet, Homan had the perfect strategy at state. She remained in contact with the front runners early and then ran them down at the two-mile mark. For the fourth consecutive season, Colerain coach Ron Russo is The Enquirer's Division I Coach of the Year. Under Russo, the Cardinals were undefeated against local competition, earned a No. 4 national ranking from Harrier Magazine and won a third consecutive Division I state championship. Before Courtney Engel graduates from Reading, the 14-year-old freshman may surpa~s all the school's cross country records set by Connie Jo Robinson in the late 1970s. At the Division II state meet, Engel recorded a personal best of 19:29 to take eighth place in the Division III race. "My goal was to finish in the top 20," Engel said. "I've already set a goal for next year and that's to win it." Engel's performance earned her Enquirer Division II-III Runner of the Year honors. Reading coach Rhonda Eisenhard has a reputation for being one of the hardest working and most dedicated coaches in Cincinnati. Competing in the tough Cincinnati Hills League with mostly Division II schools, Reading took third place.lt went on take second at the sectional meet, earning a spot in the regional.
