·Excessive Pronation Villain To Leg, Knee, .Ankle
~R. GABE MIRtiN
·~·rAt~A.RSHALL HOFFMAN <>J978, C3be Mirkin and Marshall Hoffman ·
When you run, you land first. on your ;1eel; as·the foot moves forward, your weight transfers tO the outsl• :e part of your foot. Then your foot nlls inward so that all your weig~· t Is shifted to the inside bottom r-·ut of your foot. It ls this roll .. ing inward, called pronation, that distributes the force of a footstrike thr.oughout the entire foot and leg. J><Ot that appear to be flat usual. 'ly roll inward excessively. This is caur..t excessive pronation and it's this e.:mdltion that is the villain be-. hin.ct many injuries to the ankles, kne~s. hips, bones and muscles. The major purpose of athletic . shoes is to limit pronation._ To acc;o'llplish this, a good shoe should hn"e n fl:1red heel for sta.bllity and a

cookie to support the arch. A stiff Achilles counter, a tight collar and a good saddle help to stabUize the foot in the shoe. To limit pronation, it must fit like a glove. Thick socks prevent the shoe from fitting snugly ' and should never be worn. THE MOST common injury caus-
ed by excessive pronation is runmer's knee, sometimes also known as basketball knee, characterized by pain bel1ind the knee during exercise. Excessive pronation exaggerates the normal twisting inward of the lower leg. This, in turn, causes the kneecao to r~b painfully against the long bone of the thigh.
Runner's knee has been mistakenly te~med Patella Chrondromalacia, which means a softening of the cartilage behind the kneecap. 'ORTHOTICS
An orthotic is a special-shoe insert made from a cast of the patient's foot. It looks like an arch support. Acry, llc posts under the heel restrict the foot from rolling inward excessively. By preventing the arch from going flat, most painful injuries can be eliminated. · Besides knee problems, orthotics are used to treat certain back, hip, ankle, arch and foot conditions. Orthotics can be obtained from a podiatrist or ari orthopedist for $75 to $150. To save money, you may want t!) try a1,1 arch support first. HIGH-ARCHED FEET
People with high-arched feet
don't pronate enough to distribute the footstrlke throughout the entire leg. / The treatment is to cushion the toot with thick-soled shoes fitted wlth an arch support made from soft, pliable material. People with limited pronation should also run on soft ground and avoid running .on concrete. Because orthotics will further restrict pronation, they usually are ineffective in treating a high-arched f~t. BOWLEGS, KNOCK-KNEES
Stand up straight with your heels together. If the space between your knees is greater than the width of two fingers, 'you are bowlegged and susceptible to low-back pain. If you are bowlegged, your illopsoas muscle, which runs from your , pelvis to the upper inner part of
your thigh, is usually shortened. When you run, it tilts your pelvis forward. This increases the curvature of your spine and can cause low-back pain. The treatment is to stretch the Ulopsoas muscles. Stand up straight with your knees together. Do you have trouble putting your heels ~gether? If you do, you have knock-knees and are more susceptible to pains on the inner part of your knees. UNEQUAL LEG LENGTHS
A difference as little as a r:
quarter-inch between the length of each of your legs can cause pain in; the hlp, low back and back of the , leg. When one leg,is shorter than other, your.pelvis tilts laterally$ ... ward the shorter leg, creating pre"t-:·· sure and pain on the hip joint of the longer leg. The tilted pelvis also twists the spinal column and short_. ens the space between the vertebral bodies, which pinches U).e nerves that pass between them. The ligaments that hold the vertebral. bodies in place can be strained and cause pain in the back.

THE CHASE is on as high school cross country runners from throughout Ohio and Kentucky take off at the start of Elder's Father Rudy Cross County Meet Saturday at Rapid Run Park in Price Hill. Lancaster was the meet winner.

Elder Harriers Can't Catch Lancaster BY RANDY HOLTZ Enquirer Sports Reporter
The Elder cross country team has been chasing the Lancaster Golden Oales tor over a year now. The Panthers still haven't caught them. Saturday, at Elder's Father Rudy Relays at Rapid Run Park, Elder tinished second to the central Ohio school tor the third time thls year. For the Panthers, it's getting old. "I tell you what," said Panther r{o. 1 man Joe Gerrety, "I'm really ~etting tired of tinishing second to those guys." So is Elder coach Steve Spencer. • "We knew what we were getting into when we invited these guys," Spencer said. "I guess the only way you can beat them is if they get a few guys burt. We'll have to take it out on the GCL (in the conference rrieet) Tuesday." Lancaster, as it did last year, overpowered the field in the 20team meet. Led by defending indiv1dual state champion John Zlsbka'S 12:16 time on the 2YJ -mile course, the Golden Gales posted a six-man total or 77:29. It was more than two minutes better than Elder's total time. to the front after the first halt-mile. From there, he kept building the lead until he was 150 yards ahead at the finish line. LaSalle's Eric Huey took second, tive seconds in front of Gerrety. Gerrety could only grimace when asked about Zisbka. "I tried to bang with him for a while," he said, "but that only lasted tor a halt-mile. The guy just never slowed his pace. He's unbelievable." But his opponents are starting to believe it. Zishka hasn't lost this year, and he's run against the best competition in the state. What's more, his team hasn't lost either. In Saturday's meet, Lancaster had tour of the top seven individual finishers. "WHAT BOTHERS me," Gerrety said, "is that I really think we can beat Lancaster. That's all we've talked about all year. We've been psyched for 'em all year, but it's always the same. It's always second." Meanwhile, Lancaster coach Bob Reall sounded like the quintessential front-runner. "We knew Elder would be up for us," he said. "We'd met twice earlier and beat them, so we figured we'd walk right into the welcoming committee." Reall figures the state meet will be more of the same. He sees Lancaster and Elder as Ohio's top two
teams. "I keep thinking some team is hiding in the woodwork somewhere," he said, "but we haven't found it yet. It we both stay healthy, I think we'll both be on top for the state."

nknnis White's nerves a-re rattled, but the St. xavier swimming coach thinks he likes it. · l' Before any swimmer cuts water, the Aquabombers are generally conceded the state title. White, who returned to the helm this year after a .six-year hiatus, started the tradition in 1970 and 1 the Aquabombers haven't missed since. ·~,.' This year, St. Xavier is still the fox the rest of the state is hounding. But the chase may be closer than White would prefer. ~;. Just how close will be determined this weekt'!iid at the state tournament at Canton's Brannin Natatorium. The preliminaries will be conducted on Friday at 2 p.m. with tne finals on Saturday at· 2~m. · · :;;: THE TOP 13 times around the state automat-· qualify for the tournament, the next 11 atlarge times round out the 24-man field. r: "Usually our district dominates the at-large ie'lections," White said, "but this year we had the rewest. ·I think that indicates how good the rest dtthe state is this year." · The Aquabombers qualified 10 swimmers in l?:- events~ the most of any other team in the ~tate. That margin doesn't ease White's tensions W,_hen he look.s at his toughest competition-. l:Jipper Arlington and Akron Firestone. ~!· "I'm a little nervous, but I'm not too worry," W;hite explained. "I almost like it. I'd rather have them tested, instead of knowing all they have to do is finish third and fourth . . "It all comes down to how many swimmers you have ·in the meet, in how many events and tiow :r:!luch room you have (to move up)," he said .

;; ~ ST. XAVIER boasts the top 12 times in 12 events, the most of any team. Upper Arlington lias eight indfviduals in 15 events, with swimmers ffi the top 12 of eight events. Firestone, which finished runner-up to the Aquabombers last year, Jlas a shot at five individual state championships. M• Worthington, Upper Arlington's biggest rival, sports an impressive entour:tge. The Cardinals rank in the top 121n 11 events. But White isn't too worried about worthington. "I think Worthington shOt its wad in the district against Uppet Arlington," White figures. "tUpper Arlington's kids have more background :t:hd the new coach they have this year is pretty experienced." ' . :;; White's concern arose from the strong showing by the Cleveland-area schoolS, knocking out s•ome berths he anticipated. The northeastern end of the state held its regional at Cleveland State University, one ofthe better facilities in the /country. "THEY WENT real fast·up there, so consquently, we we11t a little bit lower than I expect·.. ed," White said. ·· Qne example White used was Victor Lee, one of the fastest 100-yard butterfly men in the state. He placed ninth overall after last weekend. · "I think we have a little edge over the other teams;"' White said, "but it's not as much as I wanted to have. Everyone's got room to drop and {fiavs scarey." · 1 The Aqliabomber's biggest torpedoes lie in., -~ourtney Roberts and Dan Niemer in the 200 ~eestyle ("I'm expecting them to finish in the tiop three~"), Roberts in the ·.500 freestyle; 'Mike. ~onaton in. the 200 individual medley and Roland Wlntzinger in the 50 freestyle. i St. X's freestyle relay team of Wintzinger, ~ob Kell'Y, Niemer and John Stires turned in the 'state's best time last weekend.

The big Moe Machine is looking great and is gaining momentum for a run at the GCL title and district competition. After a fantastic impressive victory over the second ranked team in the state and nUmber one in the city - Elder, eight straight victories and selected in the top ten of the city, this may be the best Moeller team ever. How do they win??--no super-stars, just great team effort and pride. The leading scorers are Dave Thurkill and Joe Apke, both averaging 13.2 points per game. Top rebounders are Joe Apke- 9.3 and Dave Thurkill - 8.6 per game. Dave Thurkill is the Field Goal percentage leader with a 50.3 avg. followed closely by Tom Jutze's 48.2. Steve Wheeler is the Assist Leader with 4 a game. The Reserves and Frosh are experiencing an outstanding season, which could be the best ever - the future looks bright! Wrestling: The Varsity is currently 7~2, the Reserves are 3-3 and the Frosh are 4-2-1, with a combined record of i4-7-1. The team has just completed a sweep of Hamilton Garfield 54-12 and Lima Sr. 46-11 after suffering a heartbreaking second place finish in the Indian Hill Tournament, missing first place by a half point. Individual wrestlers having a great season are: Seniors John Ziegler - 14-1, John Schmitz - 11-4, Kevin Wallace - 14-1, and Mark Nichols - 4-2. Juniors Jeff Lytton - 5-2, Jim Roihs - 6-8, Tony Melink 10-3, Rick Magliano - 12-2, Mark MCMahan - 7-6 and Dan Pugh - 11-4. This strong dedicated team is one of the best in the city and once again show why MOE is NUMBER ONE! Swimming: The Swim Team is making big waves around town! A squad this good that doesn't have it's own pool! A team loaded with underclassmen! With Seniors Pat Driscoll, Rick Crema and Dave Kastrup leading the way the team has compiled an 8-2 record in dual meet competition. The eight victories is just two shy of the most victories by any Moeller Swim Team. This talented group has broken 8 of 11 school records and will probably break all 11 by the end of the season. They are ranked in the top five of the city, and in the special power index rating by the coaches they are in the top 15 in the state. They recently beat Elder for the first time ever- super!! They also placed 3rd in the Mariemont Tournament which featured 9 of the top teams in the city. Keep up the good work, guys.

The basketball team ended their regular season on a sour note lastFriday night in losing to the McNicholas Rockets 59-55 at Moeller. This loss. put the Crusader's final record at 13-7, one victOI'Y better than Ia at the current rate, Moeller will have its first undefeated seas or in the year 1987. It might -.not take that long though ~ as the freshmen Crusadei"s·;-cOf!Ched by Dan Ragland, won .. the G.C.L. Championship last Friday with a one point, double ·overtime victory over Elder. The varsity game· was pretty evenly matched until Moeller l;>uilt up an eight pointlead midway ghrough the second .quarter. The Crusaders could not hold off the hot shooting Rockets though as their lead was cut to three, 30-27, by the half. Moeller came storming back in the second half to gain an eight point advantage once again with 7: 15left in the third quarter on an elctrifying dunk by Joe Apke But once again the Crusaders proved their inability to hold a lead as they committed turnover after turnover (22 the entire game . as. compared to just 9 for McNick). The third quarter ended with the score tied 47-47. The lead see-sawed back and forth in the final period with niether team holding more tha~ a four point lead.
