St. Xavier clinched its first Greater Catholic League South Division bowling championship with a 2,572-2,490 win over Moeller at Crossgate Lanes Thursday.

Area bowlers bound for district tourney

As the sectional bowling totirnaments came to a close last weekend, 12 area teams for the boys and 12 for the girls quali:lied for Saturday's district tournaments.

Also, 24 individual bowlers advanced withoutbeingonqualifying teams.

For the boys, Elder and La Salle came out of Harrison Bowl victorious.

Colerain Bowl produced four teams: St Xavier, Fairfield, Hamilton and North College Hill.

Mason came out of Northwest lanes along with lakota West, MiddletoWn and Loveland. Wilmington and Glen Este also managed to advance.

ButOakHills,rankedNo.1in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, did not advance.

That makes Hamilton, which was ranked No. 2, and St Xavier among the top programs remaining.

StXavier,rankedNo. 3inthe poll, has high expectations for Saturday's district tournament at 2 p.m. at Eastern lanes in Middletown.

"Well, we've made it to the state finals three out of the last four years," St X coach Alan Runkel said. "We'd really like to make it four out of five."

St. Xavier will meet 19 other teamsatthedistricttournament, but only five will advance.

On the girls' side, Milford and Glen Este both advanced from M~o;:on Rowl

Out of Northwest lanes were Middletown, Sycamore, Ursuline and lakota East McAuley, Mount Notre Dame, Wmton Woods and Fairfield advanced from Colerain Bowl.

Seton and Mercy advanced from Harrison Bowl.

The girls will compete at 10 am. at Eastern lanes with the finals eX:pected at 2 p.m

Three area teams have advanced to the district quarterfinals of the Columbus bracket Sycamore earned a spot after beating Upper Arlington 5-Z and will take oil Dublin Coffman at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at NationwideArena Moeller also advanced after beating Springboro 1().(). The city championships were held last Saturday at Cincinnati Country Day and Fairfield won with 132.85 team points. Mason finished in second at 130.4, and Anderson rounded out the top three with a score of 125.55.

After· the first three-game totals, no Cincinnati teams could be found in the top five. The top five teams would advance to the state finals next weekend: .

Anderson's Rick Lane advanced to the state finals individually thanks to his silver medal-winning series of 758, two pins short of Stebbins' Johnathon Miller. Joining Lane in the finals as an individual is Derrick Sharp of Lakota West, who rolled a 679 series.

Mason finished in eighth place, Hamilton ninth and St. Xavier 11th.

The ·state championship is at 11 a.m.·Friday in Lancaster.
