Pressure not apparent That loose attitude was evident among the players during practice Wednesday at the Blue Ash Sports Center. They were joking with each other at the plate and hotdogging it at times in the field. It certainly didn't look as though the state finals were less than 48 hours away.

"We have a lot of guys who like to joke around a lot," third baseman David Bell said. "It's good this time of year because we don't get too tight. There's pressure but it makes it easier when guys can keep you loose. You have a tendency to get too tight now and having guys joke around makes it easier."'

Moeller struggled early to a 2-6 mark, and assistant coach Paul Smith credits a 9-3 loss to Lakota as the tum-around.

"Our kids at that point realized we don't like that feeling - we don't like being embarrassed," Smith said.

Attitude adjusted "The kids were disillusioned," Cameron remembered. "My idea was people were going to have to start leaning on each other because we weren't going to get out of it with one individual.

1 "We had a talk along that ideal that we had to help each other out and quit worrying about what I'm doing as an individual and start worrying about the team."

Moeller center fielder Adam Hyzdu admitted the team attitude was bad.

"We thought we wer·e invincible, and after the first part of the season, we realized we weren't," Hyzdu said. "The coaches turned it around - they put us in line and told us the way it was. That's made the difference now."

Designated hitter Jerry Storm said both coaches bring excitement to the team.

"They are both alike in a way and both are different," Storm said. "Coach Cameron will get on you more. Coach Smith is more laid back and will sit on the bench ·and talk with you. They have brought us together."

Now, Moeller is two games shy of winning a state championship. · 1 "We have worked very hard to get to this point," shortstop Mike Olexa said.

Crusaders to pack power

Veteran Moeller High School baseball coach Mike Cameron says his Crusaders will be in the thick of the Greater Cincinnati League race this season.

By the time the diamond campaign is over, his assessment could turn out to be an understatement to say the least.

Three-fourths of the infield returns, losing fine first baseman-pitcher Ricky Bennett (5-3 record, .362 batting average) to graduation.

Premier shortstop Mike Olexa highlights this group, coming off a .427 perform~ce, setting a

school record for hits with 47, scoring 35 runs, stealing 15 bases and driving in 29 runs.

"He should set more career records. He will have most of them," said Cameron, who has led the Crusader baseball program since 1969.

Manning third base will be junior Dave Bell, son oUormer Cincinnati Red third sacker Buddy Bell. He had 26 hits, 25 runs scored and 19 RBI. At second will be senior Kevin Harpring.

Returning to ¡catch is j~or Brad Hindersman (.407, 37 hits, 26 runs, 23 RBI). Junior Adam Hyzdu returns to play center field (.377, 26 hits, 15 runs, 16 RBI).

Another area of concern is

largely an inexperienced pitching ¡staff. Besides Bennett, Cameron also lost Jon Borman. and his 6:-1 record to graduation.

Cameron does have senior right-handed hurler Brian Hindersman (3.50 earned run average, .340) back; he will also play first.

Mound prospects are, according to Cameron, senior righthander Chris Wesley and junior right-hander Jeff Belle. In addition, he can utilize senior left fielder Ron Tenkman, senior right fielder Eric Henry and' senior Joe Tanner for hurling duties.

Junior . Jerry Storm is a designated hitter/outfielder/first baseman. Kevin Manley will be a utility infielder.

Another Griffey makes

Another Griffey could be making an impact these days. In track, that is.

Senior Craig Griffey, whose · brother Ken Griffey Jr. is a rookie outfielder with the Seattle Mariners and father Ken Griffey : Sr. is a first baseman for the Cin, cinnati Reds, will probably generate a few headlines of his own this spring on the cinders as a Moeller High School hurdlerhigh jumper.

Griffey is the defending hurdles champ of the Greater Cincinnati League and a regional qualifier in the 110-meter high hurdles. In high jump so far, he has cleared 6-feet, 6-inches twice at The Athletic Congress Invitational at Indiana University and the Southwestern Ohio Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Meet at the Univer-

sity of Cincinnati, according to Moeller coach Forrest Brandt.

"I think Crai~ should easily be a state qualifier in all three events (110 hurdles, 300-meter intermediate hurdles, high jump)," said Brandt.

In Brandt's view, other key Crusader tracksters are junior distance runner/long jumper Chris Asbrock; sophomore Carlos Collins (100 dash, 200, 400 relay, long jump) ; junior pole vaulter Greg Neunan; the 400 relay team of Griffey, Collins, Tony Walker, Eric Schneider and Mike Nichols; sophomore half-miler Scott Schaeper; 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams of Mike Beerman, Scott Schaeper, Matt Burrill and Jeff Lienberger; runners Mark Schaeper, Mike Brewer and Kevin Sands; discus throwers Gary Otten, Jim Perry and shot putter Keith Fullmer (GCL champ freshman and sophomore seasons).

Moeller hosts the Crusader Classic at Sycamore Junior High School April 20. Preliminaries begin at 4 p.m., finals at 6 p.m.

There will be a 3,200-meter alumni race between the preliminaries and finals. Those

During Moeller High baseball · coach Mike Cameron's 21 seasons, he has helped send 57 Crusaders to the collegiate diamond scene.

Jim Bath, a 1970 Moeller graduate and a former teammate of 'fexas Ranger designated hitter Buddy· Bell (1969), played shortstop and pitched for Cameron. Bath later hurled for four years for Xavier University.

He said he recalled Cameron admitting to him that the players back then probably knew more about baseball than he did. Bath has noticed, however, Cameron's willingness to learn more about the game's intricacies over the years.

"He's gone to modem techniques. and. drills. He's chan~ed totally," Bath explained. Calling' Cameron an "excellent teacher," he added, "He's gone from a novice to an experienced high school coach. He alwars has· the players as the No.1 pnoricy.

Winning is secondary." · He said Cameron, being an "outstanding gentleman" who will speak to schools and groups and share his knowledge with them, was fair with. the Moeller players. "He knows how to handle people," Bath added. · · Matt Woellert, a 1981 graduate, was a pitcher for two .GCL championship Moeller teams (8-o his senior season). He pitched at Oklahoma State and Chipola, Flor., Junior College and was in the New York Mets farm system for three seasons.

Hyzdu powers Moeller to GCL baseball crown -- By Dave Schutte Post contributor

Adam Hyzdu finally has made a believer of Moeller baseball coach Mike Cameron.

"Last year, I told Adam to lay off the curveball," Cameron said.

"Adam disagreed and told me that he loved to hit against a curveball pitcher and that he could hit the pitch."

Against St. Xavier in the Greater Cincinnati League championship· game Monday night at Crosley Field in Blue Ash, Hyzdu, a. 6-foot-3, 205-pound junior center fielder, proved it.

He hit an Eric Rees curve over the center-field fence at the 390-foot mark in the first inning and followed with a grand slam in the fourth over the 385 mark in left to propel the Crusaders to a 14-4 victory and their first GCL baseball crown since 1986.

"Adam has a beautiful swing," Cameron said. "He goes down with the barrel of the bat and drives it through, which is the proper way to hit the curve."

The 12 ml\ior league scouts in attendance agreed and already were talking about frequent visits to Cincinnati next season.

"In the last three or four games, I've seen nothing but fastball$," Hyzdu said. "I was surpri~ when I saw the curie, but the ·.second homer was off a fastball ...

Hyzdu completed the night with four hits and six runs batted in for the Crusaders. He has 10 home runs for a 13-4 Moeller

squad that is developing mto one of the city's top hitting teams.

"I can really feel this team coming together," Hyzdu said.

Jeff Belle, a seldom-used junior pitcher, scattered seven hits in going the distance.

"Jeff was the freshest arm I had available, so he got the call tonight," Cameron said. "I planned to pitch Joe Tanner, but we used him in relief on Saturday against Elder."

The outcome was never in doubt. The Crusaders scored three runs in the first, added another in the second and clinched it with five more runs in the fourth for a 9-1 lead.

The fact that Belle is pitching for Moeller is a story in itself.

Last year, Belle moved to Tokyo with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Belle, only to return after two months.

"I understand that Jeff stayed in his room and was real depressed," Cameron said. "He was one of those kids who wanted to attend Moeller. The new culture and-language was apparently too much for him."· Belle returned to Cincinnati in January last year and lived with a friend of the family.

"I was .real nervous tQnight,'' said Belle (3-o>; who used a fast- · ball, curve and knuckler. "ThiS was my biggest victory."

Griffey ends slump There was talk Ken Griffey Jr. was in a slump after his first week as the starting centerfielder for the Seattle Mariners. But last week Griffey hit two home runs on successive nights and was able to bring his batting average up to .219, which should keep rising.

Crusaders' Olexa, Hyzdu lift teammates with quiet cool

BY MATT SOLI~SKY The Cincinnati Enquirer Moeller shortstop Mike Olexa and center fielder Adam Hyzdu bring an attitude of confidence to the Crusaders.

It's not the kind of confidence one would mistake for cockiness. Rather, it's a confidence of 'Yes, we are going to get the job done with hard· work.'

It's an attitu4e that has spread among the rest of Moeller's team.

"The kids look to them because God has gifted them the most with pure baseball talent," Moeller coach Mike Cameron said.

"They are good leaders because they bring to the game a baseball mentality that I like to see as a coach.

"They love the game, and their statistics speak for themselves," he said. "This carries over with the other kids. When they get on the field, they are all business."

That job continues today at 1 p.m. against Cleveland Mentor, at Ohio State University's Trautman Field in one semifinal game of the Class AAA state tournament.

If Moeller wins, it plays for the state championship at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Hyzdu, a junior, is batting .452 and leads tional games, but they never quit."

Moeller coach Mike Cameron, who admits he doesn't know much about Mentor, is still impressed.

Moeller with 1'1 homers and 32 RBI. Olexa, a senior, has a .520 average with a school-record 52 hits. He also has 28 RBI,- eight home runs, 11 doubles and four triples.

"You talk about free spirits, it's hard to describe them," Moeller assistant Paul Smith said. "In the beginning of the season, they were in their own worlds. They did what they wanted to do.

"As the season has progressed, they have become very team-oriented," Smith said.

"You don't see that as much in practice, but I think what they have given us at the end of the year is that they do what's good for the team."

"Mike is a four-year starter and has hit close to .600," Hindersman said. "When Mike gets up there, you pretty much expect a hit out of him. You know he will make contact.

"And with Adam, if there's people on base, you can almost score them. You are confident when Adam is hitting because he always hits it."

Hyzdu played for a national championship team last summer along with Moeller teammates David Bell and Brad Hindersman.

Hyzdu said the best way to show leadership is through his defensive play.

"My role is to go out and try as hard as I can," Hyzdu said. "I'm trying to hustle as much as possible because it's contagious."

For Moeller to win its second state baseball crown - the other was 1972 - Olexa said the Crusaders need to do what got them this far.

"We just have to go out and play the way we know how," Olexa said. "If we back off on our intensity, there are teams that can beat us. But if we keep that intensity up, we have a good shot."

where Cincinnati has a namber of guys who pop the ball out," Thompson said. "We scratch and claw for our runs. In a way, that's a benefit because it takes the pressure off everybody. No one feels like they have to go out and do. everything."

Cost (6-0, 2.68 ERA) will start for Mentor, but he was roughed up in the regional semifinal.

Thompson brought in Russ Herbert, who pitched out of a basesloaded jam by striking out three batters. In the next inning, Herbert (1-2, 4.43 ERA) was hammered and was lifted for Keith Hartsfield.

Hartsfield (4"-4, 4.42 ERA) had struggled early in the season but pitched 4VJ innings of relief for the semifinal win. Then he carne back and threw. a complete game to clinch the regional championship for Mentor.

Brian Hindersman (6-2, 3.07 ERA) will start for Moeller.

Mentor battled the weather more than the opponents in the regular season. The Cardinals . played only five games. at and just seven: ~ames in the month of .. ·: · May. "I've lost ~ lot of hair over it," Thompson said. "The kids have hung tough. Hyzdu's choice: Home runs or touchdowns Moeller outfielder Adam Hyzdu, a 6-foot-3, 212-pound junior, may have a difficult decision after his senior season.

Hyzdu, who leads the city in home runs with six, is slated to be the Crusaders' starting quarterback next season.

Although Princeton~s Johnny Mattress and Withrow's Doc Gamble are the top returning quarterbacks in the city, Hyzdu, with a fine season, would certainly get a look from some big schools.

Meanwhile, Hyzdu has been tearing the cover off baseballs. Hyzdu, a two-year starter, began the week batting .414 (12 of 29) with 13

RBI. Moeller baseball coach Mike Cameron, who has had some outstanding players in his 21 years of coaching, including Ken Griffey Jr., likes Hyzdu's baseball prospects.

"He's a very accomplished baseball player . for a 17-year old," said Mike Cameron. "I ! would think he would have a better shot at ! baseball."

The Crusaders, who have a one-game lead over St. Xavier in the GCL race, play the Bombers at 7 p.m. Monday at Blue Ash Sports Center.

Oak Hills edges Harrison Oak Hills, which has lost only to Harrison, is the narrow choice over the Wildcats in The Enquirer's first weekly coaches baseball poll.

The Highlanders, 8-2, who have also beaten Harrison, received eight of the 13 firstplace votes cast. They outpointed 12-2 Harrison, which received three first-place votes, 110-108.

DA YTOi': - Brian Hindersman baffled a strong Oak Hills lineup on three hits Saturday, leading Moeller to its first regional baseball title in 17 years, 6-2.

Moeller, 24-6, avenged an early-season loss to the Highlanders and advanced to the Class AAA state semifinals on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Ohio State Cnivcrsity. The Highlanders finish their season 25-4. Moeller has gone 21-2 since the early loss to Oak Hills.

Oak Hills scored two runs in the first inning, but Hindersman, a senior right-hander, allowed only one single the rest of the way. The Highlanders came into the game with every starter averaging over .300.

"What a competitor." Moeller coach Mike Cameron said of to Hindersman. "He was an inspiration to our kids today."

Hindersman said the key to his effectiveness was his curvebalL "That's the best the curve has ever worked,'' he said. "Today I had my best stuff by far.

"In the beginning I wasn't sure about it, but it kept getting better.

I started using it to get ahead, then used it a~; an out pitch."

Oak Hills' only two runs were nearly prevented too. Moeller center fielder Adam Hyzdu just missed a diving catch on Jamie Birkofer's first-inning drive to the gap that ended up a run-scoring triple. Birkofer then scored on Jeff Guenther's sacrifice fly.

"He (Hindersman) might have had a shutout if Adam plays that as a single," Cameron said. "But that's our nature. We're an aggressive ball club."

Moeller's bottom of the lineup accounted for much of the hitting.

Seventh hitter Jerry Storm went 2-for-2 with a bunt single and a home run off leading off the fifth.

Todd llle, hitting eighth, knocked in a run v.;th a sacrifice fly in the third, and ~o. 9 hitter Ardell Barkley went 2-for-3, including a leadoff double in the second.

Baseball the bottom of the first when Oak Hills hurler Birkofer encountered control problems. David Bell singled with one out. Thret- walks and a hit-batsman later, the game was tied at 2.

The Crusaders took the lead for good in the second when Barkley doubled, and two outs later Hyzdu also doubled.

Hindersman helped his cause with an RBI single past shortstop.

Third baseman Ron Murphy's throwing error in the third on Storm's bunt led to the Moeller's fifth run, as llle hit his sacrifice fly.

"We didn't play well today,'' Oak Hills coach Fred Meier said.

"You have to make those routine plays in this kind of a game. Jamie's arm tightened up and Mike (Kessler) came in and did a good job, but you have to credit Hindersman. CAPE ousted, 4-2 SPRINGFIELD- Senior Tom Engle struck out 16 as Fairfield Union knocked Cincinnati Academy of Physical Education out of the Class AA regional tournament Saturday at Springfield Stadium, 4-2.

Engle improved his record to 11-0. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound hurler is signed to attend Ohio State, but a host of major league scouts arc watching him. His fastball was clocked at 86 miles per hour Saturday, while CAPE's Earl Green was clocked at 82.

Charger first baseman Chad Young clouted a two-run nome run to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning.

CAPE, which was ninth-ranked team in Class AA. finished 26-7.

Fairfield, ranked No. 1, is 25-4.

Moeller advances to state Mariemont moves into regional final The Moeller baseball team earned a berth in the Class AAA state tournament and Mariemont put itself within one victory of a state berth in Class A Saturday.

Moeller defeated Oak Hills, 6-2, for the regional championship.

Mariemont beat Franklin Monroe, 4-3, and will play Frankfort Edena for the regional championship today at Hillsboro.

In Class AA, CAPE lost to Fairfield Union, 4-2.

• In the Ohio state tennis tournament in Columbus Saturday, Cin-cinnati Country Day's Scott Stern finished third in Class AA-A singles while Indian Hill's Dave Abbott and . Gary Smith were third in AA-A doubles. J.R. Anderson and Mike Zilliox of St. Xavier were fourth in Class AAA doubles.

How 'Sweet' it is: Oak Hills advances to region title game against Moeller Post staff report

FAIRBORN, Ohio - Victory had a 'Sweet' taste to it Friday for Oak Hills' baseball team.

Junior catcher Jonathan Sweet drove in all three runs as Oak Hills edged Miamisburg, 3-2, in the region semifinals of the State Class AAA tournament at Wright State University.

The victory guarantees Cincinnati a spot in the state tournament. Moeller eliminated Dayton Wayne, 7-3, earlier in the day. Oak Hills and Moeller play at 1 p.m. today in the region championship at Wright State.

Oak Hills' Scott Klingenbeck and Miamisburg's Tom Harrison were locked in a scoreless pitchers' duel through 3 1.6 innings.

• But Miamisburg senior center . fielder Chris Colewell led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single and advanced to third on consecutive balks by Klingenbeck. Colewell scored on an error.

Oak Hills responded by loading the bases in the fifth, setting the stage for the first of Sweet's two big hits, a two-run double

Klingenbeck was overpowering. He scattered five hits and struck out 14 to improve to 9-2.

Miamisburg's Chad Conte hit Klingenbeck's only mistake over the left-field wall with one out in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Klingenbeck struck out the next two batters, but the damage was done.

"We needed to make something happen," said Oak Hills coach Fred Meier.

Something happened, but it wasn't good for the Highlanders.

Pinch-hitter Mike Kessler led off the top of the seventh with a double to right. The next batter, Brandon Chesnut, drove a ball into the gap in right-center, but center fielder Colewell made ·a spectacular catch and doubled up pinch runner Brian Barnes.

Miamisburg seemed to be in control.

But Harrison, who pitched

brilliantly, was tiring. He walked the next batter, designated hitter Greg Deifel, and Ron Murphy · came through with a clutch single, putting runners on the corners. The next batter was Sweet.

"I was just looking for a decent pitch to hit," Sweet said.

"Anything close."

Sweet drove the first pitch into right field, scoring Deifel with the go-ahead run.

In the first game, Moeller shortstop Mike Olexa, batting leadoff for only the second time this season, belted two home runs, including one on the game's second pitch, and drove in three runs as the Crusaders advanced to the regional final for the first time since 1972.

Moeller's Chris Wesley survived seven walks to gain the pitching victory .

Infield chatter is an integral part of baseball. It keeps eve:ryone awake, positions the fielders, and, if employed ·properly, can mess with the batter's timing.

But how often do you hear a shortstop yell across the infield "power equals force times . distance over time?"

A new training program at.

Moeller High School. called plyomettics, uses just that formula in the hope of making quicker, stronger, and sharper baserunners and fielders.

In layman's terms, plyometrics cart be defined as jump training. or explosion training. The idea, like our physics minded shortstop said, is to explode as much force over the farthest distance in the shortest time. In shortstop's terms, that means pulling one out of the hole and making a balanced throw to first. Instead of hand/eye coordination, plyometrics stresses hand/foot coordination.

Like many other sports, it is integral to baseball to build an explosion out of the still position. Or to move in one direction, stop, and move into the other direction. Ultimately, plyometrics is stressing four musts ..to play the game well leaping, jump distance, balance and coordination.

The exercises look simple and make up about a fourth of the 70. minute workout available to all ballplayers interested at Moeller. Most of the exercises involve hopping around on onf' or two feet. In one exercise the players jump ·vertically over three successive pylons, trying ~o get their feet as high as possible. In another drill, the players jump zig zag between pylons.· It looks kind, of wierd, .. but as- assifitant coach PaU:l Smi.th said to me "you'll know 'em when you see it." _ Crucial to plyometrics is .that the jumping stays within the players . control. The player wants to jump as high and as far as possible - but then come to a controlled stop. · ' Moeller's head coach, Mike Cameron, has always prescibed to some kind of off-season conditioning program, often the form of powerljfting to strengthen the shoulder. By law the baseball workouts can not be mandato:ry at this time of the year. Still, about 25 freshmen to seniors hoping to make the team have been steadily attending the workouts.

Because of a. squeeze on gym time, the ballplayers can only work out for 70 minutes three days a week.. Turn out would be higher, but many other players are still involved in winter sports.

Coach· Cameron says the players benefit by allowing the coaches to identify them as a player and the pl?J.yer learns to I expect what is _expected.

Another plus is that even if the players do not _make the team, and some will not, they are left with a training program to improve their play..

All in all, .and with the major leaguers present, this adds up to an Interesting workout and an ambitious atmosphere. Though the plyometrics are still in what ·zulia terms an "experimental phase," the results may be surprising this spring.

Dr. Zulia said "we're seeing a difference now. The thing we have to see is how they perform on the field -if we can get it so that they are performing Well then our players will be sure [plyometrics works].".

The perennial powers return for another tough GCL season, with Moeller' given the edge to beat Elder and St. Xavier for the title:· Moeller - Shortstop Mike Olexa and pitcher Brian Hindersman will lead a Crusaders squad that has six returning starters and 11 letter winners. Adding to an expected potent offense are David Bell, Adam Hyzdu, Brad Hindersman, Mike Habegear, Mike Eutsey and Kevin Harpring.

St. Xavier - The Bombers, though rated behind Elder in the citY poll, are pick by GCL coaches to give Moeller its stiffest challenge.

All-Metro second baseman Chris Sexton and catcher Kent Mahon will lead a team that lacks an experienced pitching staff.

Elder - First-year coach Tom Grippa only has four returning starters, but at tradition-rich Elder, there's always quality players ready to step in. Dennis Penderghast, John Dressman and Frank Lohmiller will lead a Panthers team that lacks an experienced pitching staff.

La Salle - With shortstop Ernie Petri and second buseman Scott Bubenhoefer leading the offense, La Salle could prove to be the best .team in the· GCL on the strength of an experienced pitching staff that includes Bill Walters, Pat Merritt and Rob Jones .

Purcell Marian - The cavaliers are another t~am with the potential to win the GCL title. Four pitchers (Darrin Fisher,_Jamie Lewis, Fred Moore and Tom Murray) return, along with five other letterwinners.

Roger Bacon - Of the Spartans' four returning starters, three are pitchers, giving coach Gus Dooros a foundation to build on.

Defense, team speed and outstanding players up from the reserve team also are strengths.

Despite the absence of a player the calib~r of Moeller's Ken Griffey ~r.

"Actually, this isn't an off year for talent in Cincinnati," said a major league scout, who asked to remain. anonymous. "You can't expect to h~ve the No. 1 pick every year, and th1s IS the type of year that the scouts enJOY the most."

Hughes' Gordon Powell, a 6-foot-2, 202-pound third baseman, is · projected as the city's top player.

"Powell will probably be picked in either the first or second round," the scout said. "He can run, throw and hit.the ball with power, something that all major league teams are looking for in a player." · Another player who. could be drafted high is Sycamore's Chris ~bbe! a 6-4, 225-pound infielder who is more likely to attend college than Sign w1th a professional team.

"Abbe will probably be drafted if he says the right things during the ne~t two months," the scout said. "If he indicates he prefers furthering h1s education, he'll probably will be passed over." · Also listed as probable draft choices are Oak Hills' Scott Kllngen~eck and Jamie Birkofer, Woodward's D.J. Boston, Withrow's Stuart MCMillan, Colerain's Robert Davis and Moeller's Mike Olexa.

Andy Banks, Harrison, 6-2, 205, catcher - Banks has an outstanding arm and defensive .ability behind the plate, plus a solid bat. He hit .375 average with 41 RBI and threw out 14 would-be basestealers.

Rob Batchler, Amelia, 6-3, 175, pitcher/third baseman Rated a long shot, Batchler could surface as a top prospect with another good season. He had a 5-2 pitching record last season with a 2.71 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 62 innings.

D.J. Boston, Woodward, 6-6, 215, pitcher/outfielder- The fact that Boston has accepted a college basketball grant-in-aid from Wichita State hasn't scared the scouts. Known for his outstanding arm, Boston also can hit with the best of them and could tie a second- or third-round draft choice. Boston's brother Daryl plays outfield for the Chicago White Sox.

Jason Boston, Glen Este, 6-1, 235, pitcher/catcher Boston, who has a .357 career average, lacks speed but is projected as a catching prospect.

Jamie Cook, Hamilton, 5-11, 175, pitcher- Cook, a transfer from Hamilton Badin, possesses an outstanding curve and fastball and could develop into one of the area's best pitchers.

Jeff Click, Amelia, 6-4, 192, pitcher - Click, a fireballing right-hander, is projected as a long shot by scouts. Click led city basketball players in scoring for a second consecutive season and is expected to sign <'I college basketball grant. He had a 2.25 ERA as a pityher and batted I .360: Robert Davis, Colerain, 6-0, 195, outfield - A .415 average hitter last season, Davis is rated an excellent prospect as an outfielder.

Mike Kessler, Oak Hills, 5-9, 185, pitcher - Considered a hurler with unlimited potential, Kessler could surface ali one of,(;incinnati's top prospects this season. He had a 4-1 record with a.2.82 ERA and batted .302 last season. · Scott Klingenbeck, Oak Hills, 6·0, 180, pitcher - The right-hander has an outstanding fastball, which is set up by a solid curve.

Klingenbeck had a 7-1 record with 0.76 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 53 innings, allowing only 26 hits and six earned runs.

Barry Martin, Anderson, 5·9, .175, pitcher/infielder - A natural hitter, Martin could prove to be the best-kept secret in .Cincinnati.

He hit .379 with 10 doubles, five HRs and 28 RBI last season.

Brian May, Fairfield, 6-0, 170, pitcher/outfielder - May, known for an outstanding fastball and better-than-average curve, will be closely watched this season alter sitting out most of last season with an injury.

Mark McGregor, Lakota, 6·0, 160, pitcher/outfielder- A two-time Greater Miami Conference selection, McGregor could draw considerable attention with another outstanding season at the plate. He had a 3-5 record with a 3.63 ERA last season and batted.333 with 15 RBI. Chris Melton, Princeton, 6-1, 175, catcher - Defensively, Melton might· be the best catcher in Cincinnati. If he has a solid hitting season, Melton's value could increase in the eyes of the scouts.

Josh Miller, Princeton, 6-3, 180, pitcher/outfielder - An .extremely hard thrower, Miller was quietly watched by the scouts last summer. Many are expected back for a second look this spring.

Fred Moore, Purcell Marian, 5-10, 145, infielder- Moore, whose brother Bob plays outfield in the Kansas City Royals organization, is known as a contact hitter with excellent defensive skills.

Clint Patton, Wyoming, 6-0, 185, outfielder- Patton, who hit .422 last year with five HRs and 30 RBI, improved his stock as a top · college prospect.

Dennis Penderghast, Elder, 6·1, 185, shortstop- consid· ered a hard-nosed competitor with an aggressive attitude, Penderghcist is rated a good hitter and a better-than-average fielder for the Panthers.

Penderghast, an all-city football fullback, signed a football grant with Miami.

Ernie Petri, La Salle, 5-11, 170, shortstop - Petri, who batted .385 with six HRs, 23 RBI, also is known as a power hitter with above-average speed.

Gordon Powell, Hughes, 6-2, 202, third baseman - A lifetime .555 hitter, Powell is known for his outstanding power and fielding . ability and is high on most scouting services.

Mike Olexa, Moeller, 6-0, 195, shortstop- Already signed by the University of Miami (Fla.), Olexa will draw a lot of interest because of his outstanding power and overall defensive ability. He hit .427 with seven HRs, 29 RBI and 15 stolen bases last season.

Albern Owens, Taft, 5·9, 165, pitcher/shortstop- Owens, a two-time All-Metro selection, has an uncanny ability to reach base along with the reputation of swinging a potent bat.

Bill Paragin, Hamilton, 6·2, 218, catcher - As early as two years ago, Paragin was projected as a possible major league catcher. It will be show-and-tell time for Paragin, who hits for power and average.

Lockland - The Panthers, with six returning starters and 16 lettermen, have the most experience in the MVC. Pitching will be the strength, with Dwayne Keeton, David Allen and Steve Hughes back to carry the load.

New Miami - A lack of experience will plague ~ Vikings team that returns only four returning starters (Brian Hampton, Keith Murray, Denny Rapier and Scott Wyckoff). As many as four sophomores could earn starting positions in what appears to be a rebuilding year.

Landmark Christian - Landmark, which lost 11 players to graduation, returns only four seniors. However, Lonnie Shell, Rodney Orr and freshman Brant Sharp will stand out for an inexperienced Golden Eagles squad that will struggle during the early part of the season.

St. Bernard -Don't count the Titans out of the MVC race. With .five returning starters (Rick B•ellamy, Sean Carroll, Rodney Combs, Joe Me.yer and Donald Yaden), look for St. Bernard to be vastly improved.

Based solely dn last season's 27-2 record, Country Day's Indians are the near-unanimous pick to v.rin the MVC. Country Day - Pitcher Mike Hill and shortstop Cass Hopkins are the only returning starters for an Indians team that lacks experience and depth. However, Country Day has a 48-5 record in the past two seasons and could prove tough again.

Summit Country Day - Four returning starters, including pitchers Tony Haynes, Tom Czech aM Mike Hein, could pose a problem for most Sii\Jer Knight opponents. If Summit comes up with <m adequate offense, a league championship is possible:

Blessed with excellent power, Richardson batted .439 last ~eason with eight.HRs and 40 RBI. A repeat performance will lift Richardi>On into the limelight.

Chris Sexton, St. Xavier, 5-11, 160, shortstop~ A scrappy defensive standout for the Bombers, Sexton also hit .432 and was The Post's All-Metro pick last season at second base.

Adam Shuppert, Lakota, 6-2, 190, infielder- Shupper, who batted .301 with 15 RBI last season, could earn a college grant-in-aid if his bat comes alive. · Scott Strosnider, McNicholas, 6·2, 175, catcher .:._ Bestknown for his bat, Strosnider also has solid credentials as an outstanding defensive catcher.

Pitching always is the name of the game, and Sycamore's veteran staff gives the Avaitors the advantage in the tough EML. Sycamore - Chris Abbe heads an Aviator staff that could be one of the best in Cincinnati. David O'Connor, Jeff Wendelberger and Rob Helton add depth on the mound.

Sycamore will start as many as three sophomores.

Withrow - Withrow has an inexperienced team that will struggle early. Darnell Smith, Frank Brown, Ken Dunham, Darnell Greene and Eric Maye Will be the stalwarts.

Glen Este - The Trojans, with only starters Jason Boston, Jeff Griffith and Ty Gregory back, don't appear to be a contender, but coach Pa~l Campbell has a history of challenging for the EML title.

Milford - A lack of experience - only two seniors - could plague a Milford team that returns only six lettermen. Look for Brian Birkle, Mike Evans, Jeff Gentil, Paul Helton, Joe Pnde and Clay Weidenbein to stand out.

Anderson - Voted by the coaches to finish last, Anderson could surface as a contender with outstanding pitcher/infielder Barry Martin leading the way. Also look for strong performances from Scott Bagley, John Paxton, John Diana and Scott Collins. .

Pitching is the name of th~ game in high school baseball and the teams with the strong staffs emerged at the top of The Post's annual preseason polls.

Oak Hills, with outstanding hurlers M1ke Kessler, Scott Klingenbeck and Jamie Birkofer, received 15 of the 26 first plact'l votes to easily outdistance Fairfield for the top spot in Class AAA. However, Highlander coach Fred Meier must replace six key players to remain atop the ranking.

Like Oak Hills, Fairfield is also loaded with pitchers including Joe Bair, Jon Hatton, MikE\ Reed, Mike Ritzie and Kevin Seymour. Add a potent offensfl to the pitching and the Indians again appear to be in position to make another run for· the state title.

Shortstop Rafael Santana will miss the entire soason after elbow surgery, the New York Yankees announced Friday.

Santana underwent reconstruction of the medial side of his right elbow Thursday in Los Angeles. The operation was performed by Dr. Frank Jobe.

A strained muscle suffered on his left side while stealing a base may keep shortstop Ozzie Smith out of St. Louis' season opener. · Manager Whitey Herzog provided the outlook on Friday for Smith's availability. Herzog said a medical determination on Smith, who was hurt Thursday during a game at Dunedin, Fla., against the Toronto Blue Jays, is expected within 48 hours.

Internal Revenue Service investigators seized betting slips from Peters, a Franklin, Ohio, bar owner, the day after FBI agents obtained court permission to search his car for drugs, the Dayton Daily News reported in today's editions.

FBI agent Jayme E. Gentile filed his request for a warrant to search Peters' car on Aug. 16 in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati after he and another agent observed Cincinnati bodybuilder Paul Janszen buy an ounce of cocaine from Peters, according to an affidavit for the warrant.
