Moeller Family, Just a few weeks ago, the campus started buzzing again with almost 900 students. The school year is off to an incredible start, with both athletics and academics reaching high levels. The Moeller Brotherhood and family feel are cultivated by the teachers and everyone in the building. This is just another part of what makes Moeller the best high school in the country.

The combination of brotherhood and our academic philosophy of REALearning (Relational, Experiential, Authentic Learning) was at the core of Moeller’s summer travel. In this issue, you’ll see how Moeller teachers and students lived Experiential Learning in places like Berlin, El Salvador, and here in Dayton at the Marianist LIFE retreat.

Molecular Modeling Takes on Deadly Disease

In April, the Molecular Modeling Team presented its findings on its project molecule “FIP 200” and its importance in Autophagy at the Experimental Biology Convention in Philadelphia. The presentation focused on the interaction of FIP 200 with protein “p62.” When this process malfunctions, the result can be many different prion diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Creutzfeldt – Jakob disease) or a lethal accumulation of waste products in a cell. Isaac Lohmueller ’22 and Gavin Poetker ’24 presented with Dan Shannon, science teacher. Other members of the team are Weston Gruber ’24, Ethan Hawryschuk ’24, and Wyatt Medley ’25.

THE LEADERS IN EDUCATING YOUNG MEN

“New times demand new methods,” Blessed Chaminade wrote. At Moeller, we are living his words. In service to this commitment, we continue to evolve our academic philosophy of REALearning: Relational, Experiential, and Authentic learning. As an all-male school, we intentionally design learning opportunities to teach the way young men learn best.

Last school year, our faculty participated in a workshop led by Dr. Michael Reichert. Dr. Reichert is a clinical psychologist and published researcher/ author regarding boys’ learning and development. He also presented to parents based upon his new book, How to Raise a Boy, in which he reviewed what we know and what we are missing when it comes to raising our sons. Building on his research and clinical experience, as well as from other research in boyhood studies and interpersonal neuroscience, his perspective affirmed the goodness of boys and offered a roadmap for all those who care for them.

Over the summer, Dr. Christine Brookbank, dean of academics, and English teachers, Jonathan Bennett and Eric Eble attended the International Boys School Coalition – Annual Conference at St. Mark’s School in Dallas, TX. There, they

collaborated with educators of all-boys schools across the globe, focusing on the conference theme: The Path to Manhood. Topics of exploration included conversations around character and leadership, stewardship and civic responsibility, and inclusion and diversity.

MOELLER WORKS TOWARD MENTAL WELLNESS

As of March 2021, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that upwards of 6% of children ages 12-17 have been diagnosed with depression, and roughly 10% of that same demographic has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Compounded with the stress of a global pandemic, the normal stressors of pressure to succeed in school and on the field, balance between school and other facets of life, and transitions in mind, body, and spirit make balanced well-being a difficult goal. Yet, difficulty does not make such an objective impossible. In our efforts to empower students to engage in REALearning, the Moeller community explored mental wellness as the interdisciplinary focus for the 2021-2022 school year.

The interdisciplinary theme was led by Marty O’Malley, intervention specialist, and a committee of faculty and staff. The entire school community selected one of three books to read over the summer and students discussed these texts in their classes. Throughout the year, teachers gave TED Talks about their own journey with mental

health and mental wellness, and parents were invited to a panel discussion with psychologists from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on supporting adolescent mental wellness. The annual symposium featured student presentations and a keynote address from Army veteran Rick Yarosh on resiliency in the face of adversity.

A P English Literature and Composition Students Crush the National Average

95% earned a passing score, meaning that they are eligible for college credit, compared to a global passing average of 77% on the exam.

In their sophomore, junior, and/or senior years, students may participate in college-level courses (Advanced Placement – AP). Students are required to take a standardized exam at the end of each course for college credit. Last year, 346 sophomores, juniors, and seniors sat for a total of 696 AP exams.

AP English Literature and Composition is one of our 24 AP classes offered to students. The course is equivalent to a college sophomore-level literature class, focusing on literary analysis and analytical writing. Lindy DeMaria and Justin Claypool, English teachers, each taught a section of this AP course and planned together. Out of the 41 juniors who sat for the AP English Literature and Composition exam, 95% earned a passing score, meaning that they are eligible for college credit, compared to a global passing average of 77% on the exam.

MOETANA STUDENTS EXPLORE IN BIG SKY COUNTRY

In June, ten Moeller students and two teachers traveled to Montana for an eight-day immersion of ecology, history, outdoor recreation, and the arts. Redubbing the state MOEtana for the week – the Moeller Outdoor Experience – the group lodged along the banks of the renowned Blackfoot River and a private multi-acre ranch donated for the week by a Moeller alumnus.

When the offer of the space came to Moeller, Mr. Dan Shannon (Science Department) and Mr. Geoffrey Girard (English Department) began building a cross-curricular experience for Moeller students. “The idea was for a week that combined disciplines,” Mr. Girard said. “Get the science and outdoorsy guys doing some artsy stuff and vice-versa. Getting them out of their comfort zones–some to try painting or thinking about the last Ice Age or maybe just up on a horse for the first time.”

Ten students were selected from applications which solicited interests in everything from hunting to drawing comics. “We hoped to assemble a mix of students interested in different things so that each guy could bring something unique,” said Mr. Shannon. “It worked out great! The art guys helped our Eagle Scout with some things, and our experienced campers and fisherman were able to bring ideas and familiarity to the table that half the group didn’t yet have.”

Prior to the week in June, the group met monthly throughout the year after school. Gatherings included everything from photography lessons with art teacher Mr. Bobby Whitacre ’11 to fly fishing casting in the new Moeller parking lot and contests to help study indigenous languages and the history of Montana reservations. “Bear avoidance was also a big part of our early studies,” Mr. Girard admits.

Once in Montana, staying forty miles east of Missoula, the group hiked everyday into different forests, swam

in cold mountain lakes, rode horses along the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and went whitewater rafting (a couple Class III moments, since you ask.) Several students spent the week in tents outside the lodge for the full Montana experience. The group also toured the Lubrecht State Experimental Forest, 20,000 acres managed by the University of Montana, and met with the park’s manager to learn about cutting-edge experimental forest and fire abatement practices.

Several local artists visited the ranch throughout the week. Students drew, painted landscapes, wrote songs, and played banjos and even standup bass when country-western performing artist Britt Arnesen visited. “It was kinda cool,” Mr. Girard reports. “Earlier, the guys had written lyrics about their week– Britt turned their words into songs on the fly while we all sat in a circle beside the Blackfoot River. One of the guys picked up a fiddle and played along with her like he’d been playing for years. Surely not something any of us would have been doing in June had we not been on this trip.” The students also journaled every night, read from a small collection of nature writing, and teamed up to put on skits around the nightly campfire based on Native American folklore.

“It was a week for community,” Mr. Shannon says. “We took turns with a dozen different chores each day, worked together, and spent time with folk we maybe wouldn’t have otherwise. We celebrated a birthday together, went to Mass, even bowled one day when it started pouring. By the end, it was a pretty tight group.” The idea is for other subjects and teachers to join future student groups moving forward: history and art, other science and humanities teachers. For 2023, however, Shannon and Girard plan a return to “The Last Best Place” for MOEtana II.

LEADERSHIP SUMMIT IN

BERLIN

This summer, students in Chaminade Global Scholars and German Honor Society attended the Global Leadership Summit in Berlin, Germany. Each student was placed on an innovation team that created and presented a prototype related to the summit’s theme: The Impact of Sports and Wellness. Over 700 students from the United States and from a variety of countries in Europe were also in attendance. Prior to the summit, students participated in sports and wellness activities in Budapest, Vienna, Prague, and Berlin.

Over the summer, a group of 40 students, parents, faculty and alumni traveled to Belgium, France, England and Germany to tour significant World War II sites and museums. Many of those on the trip were members of the Historical Miniature War Gaming Club at Moeller, so this group was primed for a meaningful exploration of history in the jam-packed itinerary.

Starting in London, England, they visited the Imperial War Museum, the Churchill War Rooms, the Royal Albert Memorial, and the Royal Air Force memorial, with a tour of London to add even more perspective for the group.

Portsmouth and time at a D-Day museum were next on the trip before boarding a ferry for a cross-channel trip to Normandy, France, where they spent a powerful day visiting another D-Day Museum in Caen, touring beaches, and walking the United States Military Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach.

Next, they traveled to Rouen to visit a beautiful medieval city before traveling to Paris for, where their two days included taking a boat trip down the Seine and visiting the French military museum at Les Invalades.

After the City of Lights, the Moeller group headed to Bastogne, Belgium to take a guided tour of Battle of the Bulge sites, including foxholes used by the members of E company featured in the Band of Brothers HBO show.

In its fourth and final country on the tour, the group enjoyed a day trip to Cologne, Germany; its Gothic cathedral was followed by a high-speed train ride to Berlin, where they spent two nights and toured the city and visited parts of the Berlin Wall and the Legacy of Terror Museum.

EL SALVADOR WITH MOELLER

So much of my teaching life revolves around telling students, “I’m not smarter than you; I’m just older than you.” Helping young writers and readers grow involves sending them essays and news stories and books about areas that interest them, opening them to ways to construct meaning that come from the thirty years of life I have on them.

Language barriers, though, know no age. When I traveled to El Salvador with Moeller in May and June of 2022, my lack of Spanish proved pivotal in me truly

experiencing a trip I have wanted to take since my high school days. when I saw the film Romero and, amazed that Gomez Addams transformed into the martyred Salvadoran Archbishop, I instantly wanted to know more about this country that experienced a long, brutal civil war. Early in the experience, I realized my limitations as I tried, in broken Espanol, to speak with children at Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (Our Little Brothers), an orphanage outside of San Salvador, about their joys and sorrows. A young man named Hilmar—an aspiring musician, lover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and avid cartoon watcher—shared his story of an abusive mother and fractured family life with me in an English far better than my Spanish, and a smile wider than I would expect. Age, it seems, is also just a number, and all I could offer were ears.

And that was enough. Simply listening— to other children, to college students, to historians speaking of the country’s violent past and political scientists warning about its violent present— proved the most valuable resource I could offer. Meanwhile, most of my students from the just-finished school year—who often listened to me talk too voluminously about literature and composition— offered not only ears, but mouths graced with impeccable Spanish. Steven Thibodeaux ’22, translated Spanish to English for a member of El Polpaturra, refugees of the civil war who returned to El Salvador to form a collective farming community, told his story in unsparing detail. As our group sat rapt on a concrete porch, Steven served as our gateway to understanding the history and mission of a group inspired by Archbishop Romero to serve as a beacon of solidarity. A teacher I was no longer; Steven and his classmates shared their gifts of language (fostered by Gustavo Benedetti, who continued teaching his students throughout the trip) with Spanish newbies like me. Unnecessary and undeserved as these gifts were, I am so fortunate to have been served by the young men who sat in my classes as students, to have shared in this experience of learning and growing as a student myself.

The Summer L.I.F.E (Living in Faith Experience)

Retreat is a combination of faith-sharing, leadership development, sharing best practices, and being formed in the Marianist charism: to be formed by Mary for the mission of Christ. Each summer for over 50 years, students from roughly a dozen Marianist-sponsored schools and parish communities have gathered at the Bergamo Center at Mt. St. John outside Dayton, Ohio for this retreat. The 50th Summer L.I.F.E. retreat was scheduled to happen in San Antonio, Texas in July 2020. After the trip was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual program brought students together from across the nation in 2021. This year, students and staff moderators were eager to have an in-person retreat experience. It did not disappoint!

This year, Moeller took eight students to LIFE Central (there are two other summer LIFE retreats: LIFE Pacific in Southern California and LIFE South outside San Antonio). We were not only the largest group from a single school at the retreat, but it was the largest contingent from Moeller in recent memory. The eight senior participants– a mix of house leaders, athletes, and members of the Campus Ministry Executive Board–made the most of this experience. Each school’s participants were placed in small faith-

sharing groups with students from the other schools who attended the retreat. This included students from Omaha to St. Louis and Cleveland to San Juan. In addition, students were placed in one-on-one dyads with a student from another school. Reflecting on this experience, Thomas Miller ’23 shared, “My favorite part of the LIFE retreat was meeting all the people from other schools and developing real bonds and friendships with them. Being with them for almost a full week allowed us to built strong relationships with people we had never met before.” Zaragoza House Chaplain Peter Waning ’23 added,“My favorite experience was dyad time. We got to reflect on the day and connect and learn about another Marianist community. Shoutout to my dyad partner Alfonso from Colegio San Jose!”

In addition to the great relationships formed, our leaders gained insight and leadership skills to serve the Moeller community. Trinity House Captain John Pham ’23 was greatly impacted by lessons he learned about Catholic social teaching. “They had an immigration simulation, environmental awareness game, a video on the death penalty, and a poverty simulation. These activities helped me to better understand these issues, and presented ways on how we can get involved in spreading awareness,” John said. The student leaders are now focused on planning and executing their bi-weekly Marianist LIFE Community meetings here at home. These Wednesday evening meetings bring together juniors and seniors from both Moeller and Mount Notre Dame to build Christian community. While reflecting on his experience of the summer LIFE retreat and looking ahead to this year’s Marianist LIFE meetings, Eveslage House Captain Michael Roncallo ’23 said, “I found great value in the time spent discussing how Marianist LIFE communities are run at different schools. I think taking away lessons from other schools can greatly help our own community.”

I want to thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself as the new chaplain of Moeller High School. For some of you, this is a reintroduction, as I have kept connections with Moeller in various capacities through the years, even after I left as a staff member in 1990. I grew up in Deer Park, attending St. John the Evangelist parish and grade school. While on retreat during my senior year at St. Xavier, I had a strong experience of a call to the priesthood of Jesus Christ. I pursued that and was ordained on June 11, 1977. I was assigned to teach at Moeller and through those years, served in parishes that fed into Moeller. These parishes included Sacred Heart in Reading, Good Shepherd in Symms Township, All Saints in Kenwood and St. Susanna in Mason. During my time at Moeller, I taught religion and English, coached soccer and baseball and I was also assistant principal. In February 1990, I was named principal of Catholic Central High School in Springfield. After six years at Catholic Central, I became pastor of

I have always had a commitment to Catholic education. When the Archdiocese reorganized through Beacons of Light, I had the opportunity to head home to Moeller to become chaplain. I cannot thank Marshall Hyzdu and Carl Kremer enough for their support of me and their dedication to the Men of Moeller. Their role in making this a reality was instrumental.

For me, besides the Sacramental ministry opportunity, there is a real “sign” value to the chaplain role. The presence of a chaplain says that there is something more here, as it is a visible pointing to the Lord. It is a reminder that God is here and walking with us in all our activities, trials and triumphs. I’m so excited to be back at home and engaging with students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni. Campaign Update

The Raise the Shield capital campaign was launched in October 2019 and was an incredible success. With the generosity of the Moeller Family, the campaign exceeded its goal, raising $22.4 million to grow the endowment and upgrade Moeller’s facilities. The vision of a state-ofthe-art campus has become reality as transformational enhancements to the campus, led by Facilities Manager Dave Beiersdorfer ’97, have been completed. We look forward to spring 2023 when construction is planned to begin on the Innovation Hub, a 14,000 square-foot addition in Mary’s Courtyard that will be the heart of the school and house Moeller’s art, engineering, IT and business classes.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) at Moeller affords benefactors the opportunity to make an impactful gift while also benefiting from a partial income tax deduction and the financial security of fixed annual payments for the duration of their lives, backed by the full assets of the high school.

As with estate gifts and CRTs, benefactors can dedicate the purpose and use of their gift at Moeller after they pass away.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) presents members of the Moeller Family a “win-win” giving option, allowing alumni, parents and friends of the high school to benefit personally from the performance of Moeller’s Endowment and make an extraordinary gift.

Gifts to a Moeller CRT are investing in the Endowment. Members of the Moeller Family receive a variable, annual income stream that reflects the Endowment’s year-overyear performance for the duration of their lives or a term of years, all without the assessment of any in-house management or administrative fees.

When the term of a CRT ends, the balance of the CRT may be dedicated by the benefactors, either for Moeller’s greatest need or for a particular purpose indicated by the family.

Those who establish a CRT at Moeller may also benefit from an immediate income tax deduction, avoid immediate recognition of capital gains taxes for gifts of appreciated stock and reduce estate taxes.

Estate Gifts

An estate gift is quite often the simplest and most recognizable way for a member of the Moeller Family to realize their charitable goals and typically provides an avenue for alumni, parents and friends to have an impact at Moeller beyond what would be possible during their lifetime.

An estate gift can be made by including Moeller High School in the terms of a will or revocable trust, or by naming Moeller as the beneficiary of a retirement plan, like an IRA, while allowing benefactors to maintain complete use and control of their assets for the duration of their lives.

While these gifts can be modified at any time, sharing one’s estate gift intentions allows Moeller to confidently plan for the future and paves the way for benefactors to dedicate the use of their estate gifts either for areas of Moeller’s greatest need or for a particular purpose indicated by the family.

IRA Charitable Rollover and Real Estate

Benefactors who are 70 ½ or older can reduce or eliminate the recognition of income from their IRAs and satisfy required minimum distributions by making a qualified distribution of up to $100,000 per year from their IRAs directly to Moeller High School. Gifts of long-term appreciated assets to Moeller (including real estate and privately held business interests), via outright gift or to fund a Charitable Remainder Trust, allow benefactors to minimize or completely eliminate the capital gains that would have been recognized had the benefactors sold these assets.

NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS

The Named Scholarship Program at Moeller High School is unlike any other. This unique opportunity invites donors to honor a loved one while making a financial investment in a future Man of Moeller. The return on this investment is immeasurable as it provides a Moeller education for a student who may not otherwise have the means to afford one. But what sets Moeller’s Named Scholarship Program apart from others is the long-term relationship that is built between our benefactors and the student recipients. It is the Moeller Family at its best.

All scholarship awards are based on verified financial need, scholarship criteria, and committee recommendations.

In and Out Scholarships: Gifts can be made for a scholarship, which will be awarded the following school year. The minimum donor commitment is $2,500 per year for four years.

Quasi-Endowed Scholarships: A quasi-endowed scholarship is an annual giving plan designed to award a renewable scholarship to a student from the annual gift. Additional funds donated each year are given with the goal to eventually endow the scholarship with a donor contribution total of $50,000.

Endowed Scholarships: Endowed scholarships are named scholarships that are funded with either a one-time gift ($50,000 or more) or a series of gifts over time with the purpose of increasing the principal to the threshold level or more. The original investment does not have to come from a single donor but must meet the requirements for awarding a minimum of $2,500 to a deserving student. The interest generated from these endowments makes significant financial assistance possible and helps secure the long-term financial viability of a Catholic education and Moeller High School for generations to come.

ATHLETIC YEAR IN REVIEW

BASKETBALL

Last year, the Moeller basketball team returned with only one starter and one other player with varsity experience from the previous team. Despite that, the Crusader basketball team posted an 18-6 record. They finished second in the GCL with a 4-2 record. This team also won the Third Annual Marianist Classic Tournament played in San Antonio, Texas with a victory over Catholic Central (TX) in the Championship Game. Senior Evan Mahaffy (Penn State) was named GCL Player of the Year and first team AP All-State.

BASEBALL

The 2022 season was a fantastic one on the brand-new turf field at Kremchek Stadium at the Bucher Athletic Complex. The varsity team went 29-3 including an 11-game winning streak and two nine-game winning streaks. The Crusaders captured their 30th GCL championship along with a city championship and a state coaches poll championship en route to a regional runner-up finish. The team traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC and went 3-0 against tough competition. Senior Max Tramontana threw two no-hitters and was named second team All-American as well as being named first team All-State. Senior Nate Earley was an honorable mention All-State selection. The junior varsity and freshman teams also captured GCL crowns.

BOWLING

The bowling program continued its rebuild in the powerful GCL Blue Blood bowling division. In the fall, 42 aspiring bowlers (largest number in school history) came out for try-outs competing for 26 openings, for varsity and two junior varsity teams. Overall, the Moeller bowling program had a respectable season. The varsity team was led by senior Captain Michael Lichtenberg, who had a 187 overall average. Michael also qualified and represented Moeller at the Division I Individual District Bowling tournament in Beavercreek. Sophomore Tyler Brenner led the team with a top score of 266, and JV call-up Dominic Kwiatkowski rolled the highest two-game series with a 459, averaging 230 for the match. The Crusaders roll their home matches at Crossgate Lanes.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross country finished the 2021 season with a 103-57 record that included a runner-up finish at the Jim Murray Invitational, third place finishes at the Lions Invitational and GCL South Championship, and ninth in the district championship. Jameson Maynes ’22 finished his Moeller career as the 2021 GCL South League champion, Midwest Catholic Gold Division champion, regional qualifier, and a First Team GCL and All-City. Peter Bachman ’25 was a second team All-GCL.

GOLF

The 2021 Moeller varsity golf season was an up and down year. Our best finish was a victory at the Oakwood Invitational at Dayton Country Club. There, we shot 292–the lowest of the year. Our captains for the year: Hayden Frederick and Zach Lyon. Award winners for the season: MVP– Hayden Frederick; Most improved– Nolan Krekeler; Michael Currin Man of Moeller Award– Zach Lyon. Moeller won the annual “El-Moe” cup which is a 12 vs 12 varsity head-to-head match play event versus Elder at TPC Rivers Bend. This classic event is senior night for the golf seniors. The season was capped off by senior captain Hayden Frederick shooting a 73 at the district tournament and qualifying for state. At the state tournament, held at Ohio State’s Scarlet course Hayden fired solid rounds of 76-77 for a 153 total.

FOOTBALL

The 2021 Moeller football season was filled with exciting games and surprised many people outside of the Moeller football program. In most pre-season polls the Crusaders were not picked to finish in the top ten in the Cincinnati area. The team finished 11-4, they were regional champions, and came up one point short from playing St. Edward’s for the state title. It is the first time in school history the Crusaders defeated the two state powerhouse programs in the same season (Cleveland St. Ignatius and undefeated St. Edwards). Moeller also defeated Princeton in a thrilling victory for King of the Block and Lakota West–which had four high school All-Americans on their roster–for the regional championship. The Moeller coaching staff gives much credit and praise to the senior leadership on the team who worked extremely hard, persevered, and did not allow outside distractions to affect the team.

HOCKEY

Varsity hockey faced the most competitive schedule in its history. They played 20 games against the top 20 teams in the state. This included an impressive 4-2 win over number five Olentangy Berlin. Varsity finished the year ranked 18th in the State, and for the first time in program history, the team earned a place in Capital Hockey Conference’s (CHC) elite Red Division for consecutive seasons. Junior varsity finished at the top of its division in conference play, and made a strong showing at the state tournament, defeating state powerhouse Gilmour Academy 6-1. Nine Crusaders made the CHC All-Academic team, two varsity players were selected to the CHC All-Star team, and one varsity player was voted on to the statewide senior All-Star game. Senior Nowell Snarey was also the first hockey player in school history to participate in signing day when he committed to play hockey at Cleary University.

LACROSSE

The 2022 lacrosse season saw the varsity squad wrap up with a 10-7 record and the varsity reserve/junior varsity combined for a 20-4 overall record. The varsity team ended up ranked eighth in Ohio with the sixth toughest schedule in the state (according to laxnumbers.com). Wins include victories over St. Xavier, Louisville Trinity, Hamilton Southeastern (Indiana state champs), Springboro, Mason, and Milford. Three players were named All-State, eight were named All-Region, and five were named to the All-MSLA (Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association) team. The Crusaders look to improve in 2023.

RUGBY

Last year was an incredible year for Moeller rugby. The team finished second in the state behind an incredibly talented St. Ignatius team who ultimately won the national championship. Our freshman/sophomore team had a fantastic season going undefeated and beating St. Ignatius in the state final. Many seniors moved on to collegiate play at West Point, University of Louisville, University of Tennessee, and Marion University. It is a joy to see the program graduate so many talented players and incredible young men. Underclass rugby players have shown true promise and talent, and the future of Moeller rugby is bright. Overall, the program continues to grow, and we continue to develop young men into better leaders.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Moeller swimming program completed their season with a 4-1 dual meet record. The Crusaders defeated Walnut Hills, Sycamore, Indian Hill, and Madeira. The Crusaders finished runner up in the GCL championship meet, led by senior Drew Held who set a GCL record in the 100 Freestyle. Advancing to the sectional championships, the Crusaders finished third out of eight teams. The team qualified three relays and 11 swimmers to the district championships. Big Moe capped off the season sending one swimmer, one diver and one relay to the state championship.

SOCCER

The 2021 Moeller soccer program had remarkable success at all three levels. Our JV Gold and JV Navy teams each won a GCL title, and our varsity team finished with a 12-6-2 final record as district runner up. Individually, Brock Kiper was named to first team All-GCL, and was our third soccer player in the last six years to be named an All-American.

TENNIS

Behind some amazing senior leadership, Moeller Tennis had an incredible 2022 spring season. Varsity finished seventh in the city with a 15-4 record. Junior varsity finished in the top eight in the city, finishing with 13 wins for the second straight season. Both teams placed second in the GCL. Varsity fell to the eventual state champion in the state team tournament. Tennis graduated five exceptionally talented seniors this season who have left a great legacy for the program.

TRACK & FIELD

The Crusader track & field team had an outstanding season capturing team titles at the Colerain Invitational, and Milford Invitational while finishing runner-up in the prestigious Coaches Classic. The team traveled to the University of Louisville for the nationally recognized Eastern Relays where the 800m sprint medley won gold and posted the 29th fastest time in the nation (1:35.33). The team would finish 9th out of 50 teams. They entered the post season finishing runner up in the GCL. Gold medal performances were turned in by Tennel Bryant in the 100m dash, the 400m relay, the high jump and discus. Tennel Bryant was named GCL Runner of the Year. Josiah Love was named GCL Field Athlete of the Year.

WRESTLING

The wrestling program’s success continued in the 2021-2022 season. They featured four state placers, seven state qualifiers, two state alternates, and ten district qualifiers. The team took eighth place at the state tournament, second place at the district tournament, and finished second in city voting. This was the second year in a row that Moeller wrestling won Team Academic All-Ohio with a 3.81 team GPA. With two returning state placers, three returning state qualifiers, and two returning state alternates, the team looks to continue its success in the 2022-2023 season.

2022 BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPIONS THE VOLLEYBALL SEASON IN REVIEW

This year’s varsity volleyball team was one of the youngest in Moeller’s 28-year history but it didn’t hold them back from achieving multiple accomplishments throughout their season. The 2022 varsity volleyball team is again crowned as state champions! This is the program’s tenth state title and the third time in the program’s history to go back-to-back!

Third-year Head Coach Lee Meyer wanted to get the team quality competition to prepare them for defending the 2021 title. The varsity schedule maxed out at 24 regular season games with 20 of their opponents ranked top ten in division I and division II. After battling through their regular season, the varsity team finished with a record of 18-6.

Throughout the season, the team shifted between number one and number three in the state coaches poll. At the conclusion of the regular season, Moeller found itself ranked second in the poll, which resulted in a tough path to get out of the south region. Moeller advanced to

the regional final to meet St. Xavier and won a marathon match 19-17 in the fifth game to advance to the state tournament.

In the first round, Moeller met Olentangy Liberty.After splitting the first four sets, it yet again came down to the fifth and final set to determine Moeller’s season, Moeller went on to win 15-13 in the final set. The semi-final match was against Beavercreek, and in a similar fashion, went to a fifth set. Down 8-13 in the fifth, many in the gym were prepared to see a Beavercreek victory, but Moeller dug deep and crawled back to eventually win 16-14!

Just like 2021, the championship match was Moeller vs. Elder, after Elder beat Centerville in the other semi-final match. After winning the first two games, Elder fought back in game three and pushed the match to a fourth set. Moeller battled to an early 9-2 lead in the fourth and never looked back, winning the set 25-17 and being crowned 2022 State Champions! The team finished 23-6 on their season.
