Moeller Family, Catholic. Marianist. Forming our Students into Remarkable Men. This Mission Statement describes what our teachers and coaches have been working towards for the past 57 years and this long tradition continues today. This rewrite of the Mission Statement was just one of several accomplishments Archbishop Moeller High School achieved in the 2016-2017 school year.

Additional key accomplishments this past year include: Student Body - 77 percent of the class of 2017 earned scholarships totaling $30 million - academic and debate teams qualified for state tournaments - lacrosse team won first state championship in more than 24 years - students completed more than 28,000 hours of service Strategic - developed strategic growth plan (5-year plan) to set Moeller’s direction - relaunched branding (M-Shield) to unite the school and elevate both internal and external perceptions of Moeller - updated one classroom with the latest technology, furniture, lighting, and raised $1.8 million to begin updating the remaining 24 classrooms Financial - increased endowment from $4.4 million to $5.9 million (more than 30 percent) - increased alumni giving from 9 percent to 13 percent - added over 20 new named scholarships - strong enrollment with more than 240 students in the class of 2020 (Moeller’s first waitlist) None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the strong support from you, the Moeller Family.

Every donation made to our annual fund, named scholarships, planned giving (1960 Society), and events goes directly to support our students, and in turn, our Mission. Thanks to your support we have given more than $3.5 million in tuition assistance over the past two years.

While Moeller had tremendous success this past year, the future of Moeller High School has never been brighter.

Our focus for 2017-2018 will be: - executing the strategic plan - continuing the Classroom 2.0 project (additional 24 classrooms) - hiring a new principal God bless,

ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS Lacrosse won state championship Moeller’s swimming team sent eight swimmers and a diver to state Track & Field won first track meet in five years; Ryan Smith ’18 qualified for state in shot put Jake Thompson took 2nd place in wrestling at the state meet Jack Lowry ’18 was a state finisher in cross country Coach Carl Kremer received his 500th win and the Moeller basketball team had a historic run with a second place state finish

SUPPORT MOELLER CHARITABLE GIVING Through the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends, Archbishop Moeller High School is able to provide a quality Catholic education in the Marianist tradition to all of our students each year. There are many ways to make a gift to Moeller. Regardless of the method of giving you choose, please know that your gift is greatly appreciated, and that every dollar you give directly impacts the educational experience provided to the students at Archbishop Moeller High School.

GIFTS FOR CURRENT PROGRAMS Gifts of Cash: Moeller accepts gifts made with cash, or a debit/credit card.

Gifts of Stocks or Bonds: Making a gift with shares of stocks or bonds is a wonderful way to support our Mission, and helps avoid paying capital gains tax on the shares of stock used to make this gift.

IRA Charitable Rollover: Gifts can be made directly to Moeller from your annual IRA distribution.

Matching Gifts: Please check with your company’s human resources department to see if they will match your gift to Moeller – it’s a great way to increase the impact of your gift!

GIFTS PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE There are many ways to support the Mission of Moeller High School through your estate: Bequest: A bequest is a gift made by a provision in your will or trust naming Archbishop Moeller High School as beneficiary. You can also include Moeller as a beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy, an IRA, or other retirement plan.

Charitable Gift Annuity: This gift allows the donor to receive income for his/her lifetime and qualify for a charitable tax deduction. Funding this type of gift with appreciated assets also allows the donor to avoid capital gains taxes on those appreciated assets.

Charitable Remainder Trust: This form of support transfers assets to a trustee, who in turn manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to Moeller.

Key benefits to the donor may include an income-tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate-tax reduction.

Life Insurance: This gift names Archbishop Moeller High School as a beneficiary of an existing policy, or creates a new policy that names Archbishop Moeller High School as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy - and the premiums may be a tax-deductible gift.

CRUSADING FOR A MOELLER EDUCATION Reunions provide special times, particularly for Catholic high schools.

After all, alumni are key cogs in the continued success and vitality of private Catholic institutions.

When the Moeller High School class of 1975 gathered in 2015, a good number of the group of 230 classmates met to rekindle old memories and friendships They took a gander at the old school to see the changes and chat about what has happened in the 40 years since they wore the cap and gown and went off to tackle the world.

It was at the reunion where a challenging idea took root. Classmates Jeff Holtmeier, Mike Sussli and Jim Donnellon -- 1975 class president -- had continued a friendship born at Moeller more than four decades ago.

They hold their alma mater dear and tasked themselves to do something special -- raise $75,000 for use as Moeller scholarships; and challenge classmates to unite and meet the goal. They generated $100,000.

“We believe in giving an opportunity to those who want a Catholic education -- particularly at a special place like Moeller High School. The (annual) tuition is more than 13 grand. There are young men who clearly would love to come to Moeller, but because of their economic reality there’s no way to span the gap of what they can afford and the full tab,” said Donnellon, director of Barnes Dennig, a highly recognized accounting firm.

He has served Moeller on the education commission and the athletic advisory board and is a past president of the alumni association.

Mike Sussli, senior vice president at UBS Financial Services, and a financial planning consultant, said the key goal “is to raise awareness within our class of trying to help kids go to Moeller who just might not be able to financially afford it. We want to make people aware there is a financial aid need. I would classify it more as an awareness campaign within our class. It would be great if we can all contribute something to help a young man attend Moeller.

“If we can help young men experience the Moeller family, I feel we need to do it. I’ve been out of school more than 40 years now and we probably don’t have another 40 left in our time. We all try to leave a place a little better. This fund will give young men an opportunity to do that and I wish it was 10 times what it is. We are all very appreciative of what we got from Moeller High School and what we have in our friendships with each other.”

Today, Holtmeier is an international entrepreneur in technology and communications with numerous companies founded, built and successfully sold or transitioned. Following the reunion and after a couple of coffee shop organizational meetings, he hosted about 20 select classmates at a get-together at his Indian Hill home. The purpose? Raise money.

“We learned Moeller does not have a significant endowment as do St. Xavier and Elder High School.

Moeller isn’t as old; founded in 1960. We got together and noticed some things, such as Moeller costs creeping up and the capabilities of the school to provide scholarship support for students weakening. We wanted to figure out how our class of 1975 could put together a campaign and see if we could raise (substantial) money as a class.”

“We worked with the school and put together a campaign of sorts to reach out to many of our former classmates. I had the event at my house where we invited key donors and Moeller’s president, Marshall Hyzdu ‘96. As a result of our efforts, by the end of 2016, we raised about $100,000. Roughly, we have 20 guys giving in varying amounts. We have some pledges to continue the effort over the next couple of years.”

“The three of us may be the catalysts but everyone who participated in the effort to get this money raised made it happen. Everybody ‘ponied’ up a little bit,” Holtmeier said.

“A lot of the parents can come up with some of the tuition, but they can’t make the whole thing. We fill in the gap.”

“We wish we could give more. The hope is to get some momentum and find out there are others willing to help too. We want to see this grow.”

Sussli, also assistant varsity basketball coach, praised his alma mater. “Moeller means a lot to me and it helped me from a total perspective -- not only spiritually. It made me a man, so to speak. As you enter, it says: ‘Through These Doors Walk the Men of Moeller.’

That really rings true. For me it’s important that we do everything we can to make sure that every young man who wants to attend Moller receives that opportunity regardless of financial hardships or roadblocks.”

“Why?” asked Donnellon rhetorically. “Because I’ve gotten more from Moeller than I’ve ever been able to give back.”

Donnellon said his wish is to see his class and other classes band together and tackle the need. The class of 1977 began a similar effort earlier and it has been very successful.

BEGINNING A TRADITION OF APPRECIATION Michael Riney ’12 shares the experience of appreciation, starting a tradition and leaving a lasting impression.

Young men, fresh out of college, rarely have deep pockets.

These guys in their early 20s are likely launching careers or heading off to graduate school. Their peak earning years are a decade or more in the future. They are working long and hard and few have occasion to pause and think about how they achieved what they have.

Michael Riney fits the model.

Except he remembers and values the education and educators who opened the door to a partial scholarship to the University of Kentucky to study finance; and he credits his early career success as a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual, to his formative years in Archbishop Moeller High School.

Michael Riney, class of ‘12, hasn’t forgotten Moeller High School and he gives back. He donates time and he budgets what he can afford -- not a large sum.

He observed: “If I and my classmates give a little, it becomes a lot.”

“The main reason I donate is because of what the school has given me. I budget in my time and salary for the important things in my life,” said Riney, who lives in Montgomery. “I’ve given to Moeller annually. There are some things I know are important and Moeller is one of them. When I think about why I have donated, a main reason is that one of my best friends was under the tuition assistance program. I would not have met him if it wasn’t for that program, so I support it. My parents (Monica and Alan) were able to pay my way. When I think about it that way, I realize there are so many people who want to go to Moeller and may not have the opportunity. In a small way, I can help with that.”

Raising the awareness of need, is another key way to keep a Moeller Catholic education available. Riney has donated his time in that quest, too.

“I pulled a bunch of classmates together to do a phone-a-thon,” said the former school vice-captain.

“That was actually in support of the tuition assistance program. I called four or five guys to get together and we called a bunch of our old classmates. I knew just about all of them. It was a great way to reconnect and we were calling to raise money.”

for me -- 50 or 60 other guys in the same House for the next four years. Right off the bat, you’re getting sophomores and juniors reaching out to give a lending hand, seeing if there’s anything you need and ways to help out. The House System in itself is an incredible thing that Moeller has implemented and it went above and beyond in helping me develop as a person with so many different opportunities for leadership. Instead of being the president of the school, or your class, you can be captain of your House or the captain of your mentor group.” His leadership skills were so evident that Riney was elected school vice-captain his senior year.

Riney also became involved in pastoral ministry and the Youth Philanthropy Council.

“That was an incredible opportunity and where I started to develop myself as a person -- coming to terms with things. When you come in as a freshman, you don’t know what’s going on until you develop.

“The second thing was the basketball program. I can’t speak highly enough about Head Coach Carl Kremer. He had an awesome relationship with every player in the program -- whether freshmen or seniors.

He sets the bar high as far as sportsmanship -- having a first-class attitude. I’ve learned so much from him and everything he has given me through the years.

I can’t thank him enough for that,” said the former varsity guard.

“It wasn’t really a matter of how much people gave but rather it was getting them in the habit of donating to Moeller. Even if it was $10 or $20 a year they pledged, it’s something and it helped grow our 2012 class legacy. We probably called 220 to 250 guys. Of the people we reached, 36 of them decided to donate. We got quite a few who declined. A lot of the guys we reached out to were either still in college or in graduate programs and a lot of the those guys did not have the income. But, we reached 36 and that starts a commitment.”

“The last thing is the teachers. From what I’ve heard, there are not many schools like Moeller, where the teachers are so invested in the people. It started from freshman and sophomore years, when faculty started reaching out. They took me under their wing and helped guide me along to find areas where they thought I’d be successful.”

When Riney reminisces about his days at Moeller he thinks of three things he’ll never forget.

“St. Columban gave me a good foundation in the faith. Moeller was an easy choice for me. It started back when I was in the third and fourth grade and I went to Moeller basketball camps. It’s the culture, the environment.”

“I could zip down so many different avenues when you asked me what Moeller has done for me. When I came to Moeller my freshman year, I was with people from (St. Columban) grade school and people I knew from sports teams. The House System was a new thing

To Riney, Moeller stands tall in the reasons he is successful. He will take the difficult exam to become Certified Financial Planner later this year.

DR. MARK AND BARBARA SCOTT: BELIEVING IN A MOELLER EDUCATION Their eldest son, Matthew, now 27, took the entrance exam for admission to another school but did not do as well as expected on the test and was placed on a waiting list. But, instead of waiting, “Matthew decided he was not going there. He wanted to go to Moeller,” said his mother, Barbara.

Matthew, Moeller Class of 2008, had valid reasons for his change of heart -- the reputation of Moeller’s Spanish program and development of the school’s laptop computer program. “He thought that was a huge advantage technologically,” his mother said. “I would call (freezing up on that extrance exam) our blessing in disguise.”

It’s a phrase that we have used many times. Today Matthew, a graduate of Wright State Medical School, is a specialist in emergency medicine.

Fast forward a few years, when Matthew’s brother, Eric, a recent graduate of Miami University, was weighing high schools. He looked at the same school Matthew considered before choosing Moeller.

“We wanted him to make his own decision,” his mother said. “We hoped he would want to go to Moeller, but did not sway him because we love Moeller. He looked at both schools and he said one was like a small college campus -- pretty big and not an atmosphere to his liking. So, he elected to go to Moeller and we were ecstatic.” Eric graduated in 2013.

About five years ago, Mark and Barbara created the Scott Family Scholarship at Moeller providing two $2000 scholarships presented to two young men for each of their four years at the school.

“We know that we have been fortunate with Mark’s career,” Barbara said. “We were able to send our kids all the way through Catholic schools and we know what a privilege and a blessing it is and how well the kids have done. Both of our boys have expressed that they are the men they have become because of Moeller.”

Matthew was first in his medical school class at Wright State. Eric graduated summa cum laude from Miami of Ohio in accounting.

Dr. Mark and Barbara Scott are both successful today. Mark is a pulmonary specialist in the intensive care unit at Christ Hospital. Barbara, a nurse, worked in diabetic care prior to the premature birth of their daughter, Lindsay. She then decided her mission was to become a stay-at-home mom. The couple met while in undergraduate school at Ohio State. Mark completed his medical school and residency at Ohio State and then earned a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at the University of Michigan. He has been at Christ Hospital for 25 years.

The Scott’s live in Sharonville and are active in St. Michael’s Parish. They were raised in middle class Catholic families and attended public high schools -Mark at Belmont High School in Dayton and Barbara at Tecumseh High School near New Carlisle.

Barbara said she and Mark were first motivated to create the scholarships when a friend of theirs, “a divorced mom, was not sure how she would be able (to

afford) to send her son to school at Moeller. That got the ball rolling. At first, we wanted to be able to donate anonymously so the mother we knew would not know who gave. But Moeller said: ‘We can’t really do it by that process.’ We were okay with that because these donations benefit two other young gentlemen who would not be able to afford it. We also give $1000 at Mount Notre Dame because that’s where our daughter graduated in 2015.

“Over the years, as the kids were at St. Michael’s, we donated money there and again we did not know who the scholarship recipients were. It was during that time when the economy tanked and people were losing their jobs.”

Asked for his motivation to donate to Moeller, Dr. Scott said: “We want to see values instilled in others.

That’s why we decided to send our guys to Moeller.

We recognize and appreciate the values of a Catholic education in day-to-day existence. I have seen the difference. When 9/11 hit the kids at St. Mike’s were brought together and told, ‘All will be okay. God is looking after us. Sure, this is a terrible tragedy. People lost their lives. But, God is still in control and you don’t have to worry.”

“When I was in a public high school that kind of viewpoint was just never brought up. It wasn’t a terrible high school. Kids got in trouble or kids would get injured or beat up and hurt. And there was never really this note, ‘Don’t worry, God is in control.’ It was a very cut and dried government organization.”

Moeller “instantly gives its students a foundation -- when life gets rough they have been shown how to recognize that there’s a big plan out there for them,” Dr. Scott said. “They are not wandering through life; bouncing around like a pinball. They learn to keep an eye out and trust it’s going to work out.”

Barb noted another aspect she admires at Moeller.

“They teach that we are not high and mighty. We all play a part and no one is better than someone else. There’s equality in their community service. The principle that we have to give back.”

“I would say we have stuck to our values,” she said. “I would say we live in a modest home. But education, and the belief in education, embodies our family. We have been very blessed with Mark’s job and very grateful for it. So both of us feel we need to give back in thanks and appreciation for those blessings.”

Steve Walsh fondly remembers the early 1980s when he worked summers as a custodian for All Saints Parish and loaded trucks at the local Meijer’s store -- all to save up the $900 to $1,000 he needed to pay his tuition to the high school he loves.

Today, Walsh, a well-known Cincinnati area banker, realizes it is impossible for young men to earn enough money doing summer jobs to come up with the more than $14,600 a year it costs to attend Moeller High School. Walsh also realizes parents are often financially handcuffed by tuition costs and find it too costly to fulfill their sons’ dreams of becoming a Crusader.

“I have a trust set up and one of the beneficiaries of the trust is Moeller High School,” said Walsh, 53, who presently works locally for New England-based Citizens Bank. “I endowed a scholarship at Moeller as the Walsh Family Scholarship. I have a brother, Pat, who went to school there, too. On my passing, one of the bequests for the estate is to add additional monies to the Walsh Family Scholarship.”

“The reason I put the scholarship up in the first place was to provide a way to help other young men reap the benefits of a Moeller education. When I was in high school, my brother and I had to pay our own way through school. Back then you could do that. No kid could do that today,” said Walsh, class of ‘82.

“I understand how challenging it is to save for Catholic education at the high school level and I have been ever grateful that people helped me get summer jobs enabling me to attend Moeller. This is my small way of trying to help another kid or kids have the same benefits of a Moeller education,” Walsh said. “Moeller educates young men so they will make a positive difference in the community, and in society. Moeller educates future leaders and what I do is a way to pay that forward.”

Following his days at Moeller, Walsh completed an undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Dayton and then earned a Masters degree in business administration. He has a daughter, Ivy, a Junior at Mount Notre Dame High School who is on the Moeller cheerleading team. He belongs to St. Margaret of York Parish in Loveland, Ohio.

Recalling his days at Moeller, Walsh noted: “The people are what I valued the most -- the faculty members who both educated me and instilled values. I value my classmates. I was blessed to go to a school with a lot of very outstanding people. I have a lot of positive memories of the faculty members who were a very positive influence on me and really shaped my future, and I’m grateful for that.”

There are role models Walsh has never forgotten.

“Football Coach Gerry Faust, Father Tom Kreidler, were particularly positive people. Dick Beerman was really the person who enabled me to have a job and if it wasn’t for Mr. Beerman I would not have been able attend Moeller.

At the time I spent at Moeller, there was a pretty large group of Marianist Brothers who taught school there.

All of those people gave positive example and were inspiring educators.”

“I wanted a Catholic education and I think the people I was around reaffirmed the prudence of my decision to attend Moeller. There’s something very special about the values and culture there,” Walsh said. “They really try to educate people to serve, to maintain their faith and to lead. I think those are very desirable qualities.

That’s why I continue to support young men going there today. “

2017 NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS A Named Scholarship is a gift that changes a life. Through the generosity of our donors who continue to give tirelessly, our Named Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for more students to receive a Moeller education. During the 20162017 academic year, 112 students received financial support through our Named Scholarships program with addition of more than 20 new Named Scholarships.
