National • w1nner Brian (Fred) Sattetwhite. from Moeller High School. is a national winner of "Le Grand Concours", a national French exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Of the 81.420 students who participated, Fred placed seventh. He is the only student in the Greater Cincinnati area to receive national recognition in his level of competition.

BA Woman's Club awards The Blue Ash Woman's Club announced and introduced the recipients of the 1989 scholarship awards at the May 1 meeting held at the Blue Ash Presbyterian Church. These scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors residing in the Sycamore Community School District and are to be used to Implement higher education In accredited universities, colleges, schools of nursing, music. art or technical schools. Awards are based equally on four categories: motivation. achievement, character and need.

The winners are: D Alex Korsunsky, son of Boris and Luda Korsunsky of r Brookgreen Ct., is graduating from Sycamore High School.

Alex plans to attend the University of Cincinnati to major in architecture.

D Jane Hammer. daughter of David and Karen Hammer of Cooper Rd., is graduating from Ursuline Academy. Jane plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but has not determined her major at this time.

D Patricia M. Welch. daughter of Anita Welch of Delray Dr., is graduating from Sycamore High School. Tricla plans to attend Ohio State University to obtain a degree in engineering.

D John C. Kaspar. son of Renita Kaspar of Snider Rd .. and John Kaspar of Loveland.

Is graduating from Archbishop Moeller High School. John will attend Xavier University and major in criminal justice.

D Michelle Uphus, daughter of Michael and Mary Uphus of Cornell Rd .. is graduating from Mount Notre Dame. Michelle plans to attend Ohio University, but has not determined her maJor at this time.

D Kathryn H. Ferguson. daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John A. Ferguson of Carriage Lane, is graduating from Ursuline Academy. Kathryn plans to attend Ohio State University and maJor In chemical engineering.

D Michelle Lynn Bates, daughter of Gary and Sandy Bates of Bomark Ct.. Is graduating from Sycamore High School. Michelle will be attending Miami University.

In addition, the Blue Ash Woman's Club also awarded ' the Florence Hatton Scholarship. This Is awarded in memory of Florence Hatton, , a club member who died In . April of 1981. She was a former

teacher and principal in the Deer Park School District who resided _In Blue Ash for many years. Candidates for this scholarship must meet all of the criteria as required for the club's general scholarships, but primary consideration is given to the son or daughter of a member of the Blue Ash Woman's Club. - School raises funds for Red Cross

The Moeller High School Student Government recently held their first annual Red Cross fund-raiser. Sophomores Doug Guller and Mike Bohmer, chairmen of the student government Red Cross committee, organized the even~. which consisted of collections during the lunch periods and from each divisional homeroom, The proceeds will benefit the Red Cross Youth ftmd of Cincinnati.

For its efforts, Moeller will receive student financial aid for cardiopulmonary resuscitation <CPR> and first aid classes, as well as an honorary plaque.

The seniors were the top division of the homeroom collections. raisâ&#x20AC;˘ ing $56.58. Overall, close to $500 was raised during the week.

Awarded ROTC scholarship The United States Army Cadet Command has awarded a four-year Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship to Michael A. Schiess. a senior at · M<>eller High School. Over 12.ocp students competed this year for the scholarships offered by tilt Army. Michael was one of 75p nationally selected four year winners. Michael lettered In football and track for four years. was selected first team. GCL. defensive erid. Is a delegate of the Model United Nations Team and Is part of the Big Brothers Program at Moeller.

He has maintained a solid 3.2 grade point average and is ranked 27 of 234 In his senior class. They Army ROTC Scholarship pays for all tuition. · fees and books plus a S 100 a month subststance allowance for those ·months In college. The scholarship Is worth approxi-

mantly S38.000 over four years.

Young lawyers make case Mock trials teach high school students about the law

In this case. the argument and not the verdict counts.

The facts are mythical and the only j•:..tdgment expected from the bench is how well the "lawyers" argue both sides of the case.

Fiiteen trials on the same set of "facts" ope:aed simultaneously Tuesday in all of the Hamilton County Municipal Courtrooms as 30 teams from 27 Hamilton County area high schools competed in the annual mock trial competitio:!. sponsored by the Cincinnati Bar Association.

and cross-examined, objections were made and final arguments were heard for more than an hour before the two ''judges" recessed to consider how points would be awarded to the contestants.

Seng participated because ''I wanted to see what it was about, and also our school has a tradition of doing well in it.·· Wagner said: ''I wanted to do it because it shows school team spirit. it's educational and it's fun.

Someday I might become a lawyer and this is really interesting."

They receive no school credit for the \\.Drk they have done "and it has been lots of work.·' they said.

The case involves the First Amendment's separation of church and state.

Plaintiffs' counsel were Kim Gibson and Shelley Haley, both of Amelia High School.

The "facts" include a citizen group seeking to prevent a high schooh graduation from including performances of Amazing Grace. a hymn. and Turn! Turn! Turn! a song based on Biblical text.

Lots of e,·idence They have come to grips with 141 pages of materi.als, 62 pages of pleading~ and affidavits. 15 pages of deposition summaries, copies of the F1rst and Fourth Amendments to the Constitution, the Ohio Constitution Bill of Rights. a section of the Ohio Revised Code and a decision by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Attorneys Jeff Landen, cochairman of the event said after two practice rounds since December, "some oi these kids are so good, you ask yourself. 'How can they be only 18 and ha\·e this understar..ding of the issues?' " .,.
