As Moeller continues to adapt and change and deal with many of our current economic realities, there exists an unnerving gap between our future needs and our ability to meet them. If you look out five years and imagine what it will cost to operate one of the best Catholic and Marianist high schools in the country, it can be daunting.

One of our most critical and important goals is to maintain a vibrant and viable enrollment. In order to do that, we need to make Moeller as affordable as possible. That requires us to be able to meet more and more of the demonstrated financial need on the part of our families. That financial need has virtually doubled in just the last five years, making a Moeller education harder and harder to reach for future Men of Moeller and their families. We currently meet only half of that need.

We truly believe that we offer what many people want for their sons - a chance for a young man to be formed in his

faith, to achieve academically and to grow individually.

During this formative period between the ages of 14 and 18, more things can happen in this concentrated time than perhaps any other period of these young men's lives.

Moeller impacts these young men and truly makes a difference.

So the question presents itself: What can we do to make sure that Moeller remains a place for all who desire it?

Many Catholic schools must compete for excellent students, outstanding faculty and ever-changing programming and technology. Just as important as this competition for excellence is the competition for financial support on the part of all of our stakeholders. Ultimately, after all, that financial support will be the fuel of our continuing positive impact.

You've heard me say before that our best in our present and our past comes out in our stories. Storytelling becomes a sort of support system and should be treasured and nurtured by

all. Some of the best Moeller stories that I've heard can almost take on a sacred quality to them. They speak to our Marianist underpinning and the shoulders on which we all stand. In a society with many of our institutions and traditions in turmoil, our storied Moeller tradition must remain stable.

That stability will only happen as our culture of philanthropy and levels of financial support at Moeller continue to grow.

The work we do every day is noble and the young Men of Moeller deserve your unwavering support as they create many of their own stories. And in our current economic reality, your support of what you value is vitally important.

When you think about it, philanthropy really is a litmus test of Moeller’s constituents’ concern for our mission and worthiness. If we don’t meet this litmus test head on, we’ll be delivering less than a standard of excellence.

You could say that this issue of Moeller Magazine is particularly data driven. Our cover feature, “Learning in the 21st-Century,” is our first installment of several upcoming articles that will show you how our educational leaders – administration, teachers, and staff – are working together with the young men of Moeller to bring out their best and prepare them to be successful college students, community leaders, workers, and citizens.

In this edition we introduce you to the new “3Rs” of education: rigor, relevance, and relationships.

Principal Blane Collison has been a strong advocate of the Rigor/ Relevance Framework™ (R/RF) that was developed by renowned education leader Dr. Bill Daggett, founder and CEO of the International Center for Leadership in Education. This system aligns with the most recent educational research, best practices, and most of all, Moeller’s Marianist mission.

As part of Principal Collison’s educational vison, in this feature we focus on the school’s new, expanded Guidance Department and how the counselors are collaborating to create a custom counseling program for Moeller based on the American School Counselor Assocation’s (ASCA) national model, which is the most up-to-date, research-based, data-driven framework for guidance programs (see page 19).

At the core of Daggett’s Rigor/Relevance Framework™ is this research-based truth: teaching matters. And Moeller’s educators are among the nation’s best. Art/Photo Department Chair Greg Stanforth (Moeller Class of 1967) was just named one of the top-30 most admired educators for 2014 (see page 7) and new German teacher Linda Zins-Adams accepted a national award in November for how she effectively integrates technology into her classrooms (see page 25).

Those are a few R/RF vignettes in this magazine, but please check our website (www.Moeller.org) for the most current ways Moeller is modeling the new 3Rs. For example, under the RIGOR category, in the News section of our website you will find a slideshow of English Department Chair Geoffrey Girard’s launch of his two new sci-fi novels published

by Simon & Schuster. In October Girard spoke about his work at Joseph-Beth Booksellers to a record crowd that included many Moeller students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

One last bit of data – we want to share the survey results we gathered in April when you responded to our first Moeller Magazine questionnaire. In the spring/summer edition of the magazine, we asked for your feedback about the magazine’s content and quality (and more), and we were pleased to learn that you like what you’ve read so far. You will find the complete survey results on our website under News & Media/Moeller Magazine, and we will continue to listen to your feedback so we can make this publication a meaningful connection between you and Moeller High School.

Reader Feedback: Lawrence Dieters of the Class of 1965 recently wrote to us about our last magazine issue and provided helpful feedback: On page 18 of the spring/summer 2013 magazine there is a story about the “Most Popular School in Cincinnati.” Barry Borman ’64 is quoted as saying, “We began our winning tradition that first year," and that they were all freshmen at the time of the WSAI contest. This cannot be true because my class, the Class of '65, also participated in that contest.

Under RELATIONSHIPS (also in the News section of our website) you will find a poignant special section that The Cincinnati Enquirer published in June about Moeller’s Grief Group.

On page 16, you have a story and senior picture of Robert Deiters, but the color photo of him is in fact Robert’s and my cousin, Richard P. Deiters Jr. '64.

As for RELEVANCE, if you check on our hompepage under What’s Happening or Spotlight, you’ll find numorous ways the school is providing meaningful projects and activities to develop the minds, hearts – and spirits of the Men of Moeller.

The Blessed Father William Joseph Chaminade stated that, “New times call for new methods.”

Never has this been more true than in educating today’s 21st-Century learners.

Research bears out that new methods of teaching aimed at increasing student engagement is the critical piece to ensuring that students receive a quality education. Gone are the days of a student sitting passively in a classroom attempting to absorb informational items presented to them by the teacher. This outdated model of education was what we call “Sage on the Stage.”

Traditionally, education was more “teacher centered” and focused on students listening to their lectures during class, working later on “homework problems,” and then returning the next day to have the teacher grade the assignment.

The assumption was that students’ knowledge grew as they listened and that they could effectively absorb all that was being presented. This was when students were considered “passive learners.”

One of the new methods being employed by Moeller teachers today is known as the “flipped classroom” approach. This practice is designed to have the teacher’s lecture be the “homework.”

A Moeller education today is focused on actively engaging students in their learning experiences, allowing them the opportunity to apply what they have learned through questioning, exploring new ideas, and gaining a greater depth of understanding. This newer model called “Guide on the Side” works by helping students make relevant connections and having them apply their knowledge to real-world situations and meaningful problem solving. We now know that students need to be “active learners” in the classroom.

One of the new methods being employed by Moeller teachers today is known as the “flipped classroom” approach. This practice is designed to have the teacher’s lecture be the “homework.” In a flipped classroom, students view video lecture via their tablet PCs, and then return to class to apply what they have learned. They do this by actively participating in classroom activities. Using this process, students also engage with their classmates and learn from each other by making relevant connections consistent with the teacher’s learning objectives.

This process enables the teacher to guide students in applying the lesson, rather than expecting them to do this accurately in isolation at home without any the teacher supervision.

The Covey research project, completed in 2001, proved that when an individual “teaches” or shares information they have learned within a 24-hour period, they retain 95% of what was presented. The flipped classroom allows students to draw from their teacher’s knowledge base, to ask questions relevant to the lecture material, and to learn from their peers’ discoveries and ideas, thus creating a classroom setting much more conducive to today’s collaborative workplace environment.

We know that today’s students gain a great deal more when they are actively engaged in their learning rather than passively absorbing information. Therefore, a Moeller education today includes new methods, like the flipped classroom, to ensure they are better equipped for 21st-Century challenges.

The Academic Success of the Men of Moeller

By Principal Blane Collison Most people know that last year Moeller won two state team championships – one in football and one in baseball. They may also know that two of our wrestlers won individual state titles as well.

But what they may not know is that our athletes work just as hard in the classroom as they do on the field, always keeping their education a top priority.

Valedictorian Chris Kessling ’13 was a key player on the football team and named Academic All-Star. But in addition, the collective GPA of all 22 lettermen was ranked among the best of more than 700 Ohio schools, which earned the Moeller Crusader Football Team the title of Academic All-Ohio – an impressive accomplishment off the field as well.

Many may already know that our volleyball team worked hard to defend their 2012 State Championship and finished the regular season with a perfect 10 – 0 record, earning an 11th league title in 18 seasons. But what truly distinguished the team this year was their collective GPA (a 3.75 average) and that the Moeller Volleyball Team received the Ohio – Team Academic Award for the fourth consecutive year.

As a comprehensive, college-prep educational institution, we offer a broad range of courses – from special education to Advanced Placement – believing that all our students

can be successful in college, and we provide the resources and academic safety nets to ensure that they are prepared to do so. But few know the rigor involved in our upper-level AP and Honors courses. For example, this past year 69 of our students were named AP Scholars and earned college credit due to their exam scores. We administered 346 AP tests this past year, which is 100+ more than in previous years.

And this year our senior business finance students have the opportunity to earn three college credits for the course – for free. Our students can also earn college credit in our Pre-Engineering (new this year) and German Programs as well.

One last academic note: Each year 98 – 99% of our students are enrolled in colleges across the nation, and this past year 58% of our seniors received academic scholarship offers totaling $19.5M. What may surprise most people is that of the 130 students who received college scholarships, 113 of those were academic scholarships. These numbers are a testament to the rigor of our curriculum.

So while we salute our champions on the field, we also salute the Men of Moeller for their academic excellence!

(And please spread the word – this is one secret we want to get out.)

By Principal Blane Collison As a Catholic School in the Marianist tradition, one of the key tenets of the Characteristics of a Marianist Education is to provide a quality, integral education. Each day our faculty imparts the knowledge necessary for success and combines that with relevant application of the ideas being presented to our students. Our students benefit by utilizing this knowledge in new ways, connecting their classroom with real-life events and applications and using their new-found knowledge in meaningful ways.

Our students work hard in their academic pursuits, and as principal, it is my distinct pleasure to announce that the members of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) have named seniors Kellis Kincaid (single photo, on left side) and Nick Schlueter (single photo, on right side) National Merit Scholar Semifinalists, and they have named the following students National Merit Scholar Commended Students: Joe Pappalardo, James Rieger, Preston Rumsey, Tyler Schumacher, and Andrew Strotman.

These students were selected nationally from among 34,000 students who have excelled in their academic endeavors.

“These young men being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These young men represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. RECOGNIZING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: Setting a scholarly tone for the beginning of the school year, Moeller holds an annual all-school Academic Awards Assembly recognizing the achievements of the Classes of 2014, 2015, and 2015 for their success during the 2012-13 school year.

Principal Blane Collison recognized students for achieving First and Second Honors, those who earned were 1st and 2nd place awards in their subject area, the Blessed Chaminade National Honor Society members, the Moeller Academic Team (who again captured the GCL title and went to state last year), and Special Awards recipients where our students are recognized for their academic and leadership excellence by Notre Dame University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Cincinnati Zoo, Bausch & Lomb, St. Michael’s College, Xerox, and more.

World Languages Chair Elena Keyser and Latin Teacher Brian Compton ’95 recognized the Spanish and Latin Honor Societies and those who achieved honors and medals on the Spanish and Latin national exams.

Finally, Pastoral Ministry Director Jim Elfers and Service Director Brian Gilronan recognized those students who earned awards for 50+ or 100+ hours of community service and the three students who received the Pastoral Ministry’s highest honor, the Charlotte McCullough Award. Art/Photo Chair Greg Stanforth ’67 Named Top-30 Most Admired Educators for 2014 Design Intelligence (DI), the magazine that features America’s best architecture and design schools, named Art & Photo Department Chair Greg Stanforth a top-30 educator for 2014.

To honor excellence in education, each year the magazine recognizes 30 exemplary professional educators after extensive input from thousands of design professionals, academic department heads, and students. Educators and administrators from architecture, industrial design, interior design, and landscape architecture are considered for inclusion. Stanforth was the only high school educator chosen - the remaining honorees were from renowned university art programs and art institutes around the U.S., such as Cornell University and Pratt Institute.

“Greg Stanforth has spent nearly 30 years helping generations of high school students begin successful careers in art, architecture, and design,” the DI staff notes, “As a group, his graduating students regularly receive as much as $2 million per year in scholarship offers to top college programs throughout the country.

Stanforth has taught on the college level at Rochester Institute of Technology and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Art Academy of Cincinnati.”

The magazine also published Stanforth’s article, “Choosing the Right Design School, Not Just the Best,” which provides helpful advice for parents. “Parents, it is not a privilege for your child to attend a particular school; it is a privilege for the school,” says Stanforth. He then outlines three simple steps for pursuing scholarships: preparing in advance, using the best resources, and examining all options before making a choice.” The article is featured on DI’s website: www.di.net.

NECC Student Leaders Focus on Stress Prevention at Red Ribbon Breakfast

Several students recently participated in a presentation on stress prevention at the annual Northeast Community Challenge (NECC) Red Ribbon Breakfast. The NECC is a leadership organization that also includes students from Ursuline Academy and Sycamore High School and works to help teens make healthy lifestyle choices and avoid substance abuse. Moderator (and Moeller parent) Beth Wright explained, “Over the summer at our leadership conference, all three groups agreed that stress was a major issue for teens and one that we needed to address more in the schools.”

NECC’s summer leadership conference covered topics on leadership and character development, team building, goal setting, decision making, group dynamics and interpersonal relationships, conflictmanagement skills, problem-based learning, and strategic planning. Moeller Speech Therapist Jenifer Johnson spoke to the conference about stress management. In addition to making stress management the focus of the Red Ribbon Breakfast presentations, the students created a support group called “REST” that meets periodically throughout the year and helps students cope with the stress in their lives. As great as these numbers are, this doesn’t paint the entire picture of our development efforts for the school. Not only do we raise funds through our Annual Fund, but we also raise funds through other events or projects (i.e., the Main Event Charity Auction; capital projects, such as the new locker room renovation and Veterans Memorial; the Student Fall Raffle, etc.).

This year the Moeller community at large raised $2,252,369.88, which includes our Annual Fund, Main Event, Named Scholarships, Student Fall Raffle, Locker Room Project, Veterans Memorial, and our Moeller Endowment earnings. This total affects every young man of Moeller, and I can’t thank you enough for being a part of something truly special here.

Because tuition alone does not cover the actual cost of educating a student at Moeller, the school relies heavily on Annual Fund contributions to help make up the difference each year. This year’s per-student gap is $2,873.

Our 2013-14 Annual Fund Drive kicked off September 1, 2013, and we are already well on our way to reaching our $1.4 Million Goal.

On November 20, 2013, our Annual Fund Drive stood at $663,006.51, and our total development effort was $942,417.74. This is a great start, but we have a long way to go.

So I challenge you, your family, and your friends to participate in our Annual Fund this year and help be a part of shaping the minds of our Men of Moeller. Help us reach $1 Million by December 31, 2013. Every gift makes a difference.

Moeller’s Mothers’ Club has been blessed with the opportunity to raise funds through our annual Fashion Show and other events to benefit our boys and the school in areas that are not part of the “regular” budget.

This year we were able to use some of the proceeds to update Moeller’s faculty and staff lounge. We wanted them to know how much we value the time they spend with our sons.

Learning in the 21st-Century: Rigor, Relevance & Relationships

New Guidance Department Model Complements Moeller’s Educational Vision What will our young men need to succeed in the 21st-Century as college students, citizens, leaders, and workers? According to Harvard education leader Tony Wagner, it comes down to seven core competencies:* 1. Critical thinking and problem solving; 2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence; 3. Agility and adaptability; 4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism; 5. Effective oral and written communication; 6. Assessing and analyzing information; and 7. Curiosity and imagination.

Another national leading resource, the Partnership for 21st-Century Skills,** has identified similar competencies: 1. Mastery of core subjects and 21st-Century themes (including global awareness and financial, civic, health, and environmental literacies); 2. Learning & innovation skills (the 4Cs: creativity & innovation, critical thinking & problem solving, communication, and collaboration); 3. Information, media, and technology skills; and 4. Life & career skills.

With these core elements touted by experts at the forefront of 21st-Century learning, how will Moeller’s leaders ensure that the school’s curriculum, teacher pedagogy, and assessment systems measure up and foster 21st-Century student achievement?

Moeller High School Principal Blane Collison has the answer. It’s the Daggett System for Effective Instruction that focuses on the new 3Rs of education: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships. And he’s been reinforcing this system since 2006.

The New 3Rs of Education: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships This Rigor/Relevance Framework™ (RRF) system was developed by renowned education leader Dr. Bill Daggett, founder and CEO of the International Center for Leadership in Education. It is a research-and best- practices based tool that examines curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

At a basic level, the framework defines rigor as “learning in which students demonstrate a thorough, in-depth mastery of challenging tasks to develop cognitive skills through reflective thought, analysis, problem-solving, evaluation, and creativity.” (RRF, p.4)

RELEVANCE: Moeller was one of the first schools in the country to implement a one-to-one laptop program.

The RRF defines relevance as “learning in which students apply core knowledge, concepts, or skills to solve real-world problems.” (RRF, p. 5) As for defining relationships, Daggett says, “One of the findings of the International Center/CCSSO research on characteristics of successful schools funded by the Gates Foundation was that teacher-to-student relationships have a major impact on student achievement. The presence of strong, positive, trusting relationships impacts student engagement and therefore fuels students’ sense of belonging and commitment to their own learning.” (The Daggett System for Effective Instruction: Where Research and Best Practices Meet, p.8) “The world in general – and America in particular – is being pushed by fundamental changes caused by both globalization and technology,” says Principal Collison. “The implication for what students need to know and be able to perform is increasingly dramatic. Therefore the 3Rs of education – rigor, relevance, and relationship – are even more critical in preparing our students for success… It is imperative that we provide them with a worldclass education that prepares them for the issues of today – and the ability to adapt to the changes of tomorrow. Dr. Daggett’s Rigor/Relevance Framework is a key tool that will assist us in these efforts.”

Moeller’s New Guidance Department Model Fostering Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships As part of Principal Blane Collison’s educational vision to further enhance the goals of rigor, relevance, and relationships, he has expanded school’s Guidance Department staff this year and charged them with creating a new program for Moeller based on the American School Counselor Assocation’s national model.

“Today’s high school students are faced with a plethora of decisions related to their well-being,” he explains. “Guidance programs now more than ever are an essential component to ensuring students are making well-informed decisions and shaping the future they desire to achieve. So this year Moeller added two additional counselors to its Guidance Department to bring the total to six, one for each House represented within the school’s House System. The goal of the new counseling model is to improve the pastoral care provided each student during his four-year high school journey.”

The department is currently collaborating to develop and implement a new guidance model based on the national framework recently developed by the American School Counselor Assocation (ASCA). The ASCA model aligns with Collison’s educational vision of rigor, relevance, and relationships, and offers the following benefits: • Ensures equitable access to a rigorous education for all students;

• Identifies the knowledge and skills all students will acquire as a result of the K-12 comprehensive school counseling program; • Is delivered to all students in a systematic fashion; • Is based on data-driven decision making; and • Is provided by a state-credentialed school counselor.

“The vision for implementing the new program with specific goals to be achieved centers on proven research,” says Collison. “An effective school counseling model is comprehensive in scope, preventative in design, and developmental in nature. This new model has been created to ensure that every student receives

what he needs for personal growth, academic achievement, and college/career readiness.”

In addition, the new model connects the counselors directly with Moeller’s House System. Each counselor now collaborates with a designated House Dean and works with the students of that House, which will enable a form of “looping” to occur: Like the Deans, the counselors will remain with the same group of students throughout their education at at Moeller, enabling them to get to know the students well during the course of their four years together.

“Assigning each counselor to a specific House allows an increased understanding as it relates to all aspects of a student’s life,” says Collison. “Counselors will become increasingly familiar with each student’s interests in the classroom, along with his outside activities and family dynamics. Understanding these important aspects of a student’s life will assist the counselor in helping to lead the student to make positive, proactive, and healthy decisions. Along with teacher and House Dean collaboration, the new model also allows each counselor to actively engage students by using the House System activities, M-Blocks, Mentor Groups, assemblies, and class visits. The New Counselors Share Their Perspectives Counselor Paul Ramstetter, a long-time educator with a background as an administrator and college teacher, sees the House System connection as being key to the department’s success. “It takes our work to a whole other level,” he said.

Counselor Brian Gilronan (Moeller’s former pastoral ministry service director) believes the House System connection is already working out well with intervention efforts. “I like collaborating with the House Deans,” he says. “They’ve provided helpful insights so that we can more easily identify students who may be experiencing challenges or getting in trouble ahead of time. We can then call them down to our office to work to alleviate issues before they escalate.”

Counselor John Ward agrees, “I find the individual and weekly meetings with the Deans helpful,” he says. “Alex (Thompson) brought me into his small-group talks, and we addressed important topics, like anti-bullying. The Freshman Retreat really helped me connect with our students.”

The counselors are also working with the Deans to further develop the House System’s Man of Moeller course. “With freshmen we are working on their transition to high school, time-management skills, and goal setting,” says Gilronan. “With the sophomores we are focusing on identifying their learning styles and helping them be effective self-advocates.”

One of the first goals of the counselors was to meet with all their seniors to assess how far along they were with the college application process and determine their college readiness. Counselor Kristen Merica said, “I asked (my seniors) what they had done so far to prepare, and I spent some time getting to know them and their goals.”

One area that will be a strong focus this year is collecting data. The counselors will be using the National Student Clearinghouse, a resource for high schools that matches alumni records against college enrollment and degree data. Using this database, Moeller will be able to gather important information regarding college attendance, persistence, and achievement of its graduates.

The counselors will be working together throughout the year to tailor the national guidance model to fit Moeller’s specific needs and culture. “The model we develop must align with the school mission,” says Counselor Greg Derus.

“We want to develop a program that incorporates our House model and our faith. Being a Catholic school, we are different – we want to address that and work hand-in-hand with our teachers and Mentors.”

“The national ASCA model is not a canned program,” explains Counselor Gail Ann Dorsey. “We can implement it how it best fits our school. We can choose to be more proactive in developing college readiness and career planning.

We are looking at different service providers to assist us in these areas. And we will evolve all this over time.”

Providing Moeller Students with a 21st-Century Education

German Teacher Honored with National Award for Technology Integration Moeller German Teacher Linda Zins-Adams recently received a national award for her innovative and effective ways of integrating technology in her German language courses.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages presented Zins-Adams with the award on November 22 at their convention in Orlando, FL. This national organization involves more than 12,000 language educators and administrators at every level, including government and industry, and is dedicated to improving language instruction and meeting the changing needs of educators and their students.

The former president of the American Association of Teachers of German, Anne Costabile-Heming, nominated Zins-Adams for the award saying, “Linda connects her students to the real world, to authentic sources, to communicative language production in authentic situations…

Linda Zins-Adams: ‘Teacher of the Year’ Zins-Adams currently teaches all levels of Moeller’s German classes. She has been teaching since 1991 and has earned numerous honors and awards during her career, including being named “Teacher of the Year” by both the Southern Conference of Language Teaching and the Kentucky World Language Association. In addition, she received Kentucky’s Duden Award twice, which is the state’s recognition of the German Teacher of the Year.

Zins-Adams is a cum laude graduate from the University of Cincinnati and earned a bachelor’s degree in German studies. Her alma mater has honored her with the Outstanding High German Teacher award twice, and she was the recipient of the university’s Distinguished Alumna Award in 2009. She also has a master’s degree in special education from Xavier University.

Zins-Adams has been featured in numerous publications and is the author of several articles on a variety of topics. She is also an accomplished speaker. At the Kentucky World Language Conference she was awarded Best Presentation, and she now presents part time, traveling around the country to address world language professionals.

Currently, Zins-Adams also serves as Moeller’s AP coordinator due to her long-standing connection with the College Board as a consultant, table leader, and reviewer. For the past several years, her students have had a 100% AP exam pass rate. She hopes to grow Moeller’s German program in the same way and eventually resume her role as an AP teacher. Meanwhile, students in her German classes have an added benefit of being able to earn up to 10 college credits through the University of Cincinnati’s Dual Credit Program, much like students in Moeller’s new pre-engineering program and business accounting course.

Zins-Adams was hired this fall to teach all levels of Moeller’s German classes. “We are very proud of Linda’s recent accomplishment,” said Principal Blane Collison, “and we feel honored to welcome her to our community.

Linda’s expertise in effectively integrating technology into the curriculum made her a natural fit for Moeller.”

And Zins-Adams enthusiastically agrees. Shortly after joining the Moeller faculty, she began sharing her new professional experience online with the personal learning network (PLN) that she created and now includes 205 other world language professionals who share tech ideas to improve their teaching. Embracing Moeller’s technologyfriendly environment and taking advantage of opportunities that would have been considered taboo only a few years ago, she said, “I have begun a new chapter in my twenty-first year of teaching at a school that is 1:1.

Gone are the days when we have to actively prohibit student use of cell phones. Because of various platforms and sites, such as Google Voice (www.google.com/voice), Celly (cel.ly), Socrative (www.socrative.com), Poll Everywhere (www.polleverywhere.com), and apps for online dictionaries that are readily available, my classroom has become in the last five years more welcoming to cell phone use. I am excited about combining BYOD initiatives with an environment where every student has his own laptop from freshman through senior year.”

Moeller’s Technology Evolution Moeller’s commitment to technology can be traced to its Marianist mission to “educate for adaptation and change.” Since opening in 1960, Moeller has used leading-edge technology tools to enhance student learning. The school began its commitment to integrating computer technology in the 1980s, purchasing its first computers in 1984 and pioneering its One-to-One Laptop Program in 1995. Shortly afterward, IBM honored Moeller as a model in technology education.

This fall the Moeller freshmen received Fujitsu “hybrid” tablets that are more portable and user friendly.

Using State-of-the-Art Tablets Computers When students first arrive at Moeller, they receive a state-of-the-art tablet PC. This year’s freshmen are using a Fujitsu hybrid tablet PC that offers them the flexibility and durability of an iPad but also includes a built-in keyboard and a large touch screen for digital pen use. The tablet features built-in handwriting recognition software that converts input into text, and when the pen is not in use, the tablet automatically re-adjusts to a touch interface. “Our PCs foster learning and encourage creativity, problem solving, and collaboration among our students and teachers, while giving them a tool that accommodates all learning styles,” says Technology Director Jeff Gaier.

“Our goal has always been to provide our students with the technology skills they would need in college and beyond. Since initiating our one-to-one Laptop Program nearly two decades ago, we know our students graduate technologically savvy, which helps them be better prepared, more organized, and fully engaged in the learning process once they get to college.”

And I will no longer have to reserve time to go to the lab to have my students update their digital portfolios on Wikispaces (www.wikispaces.com) or record their interpersonal and presentational spoken tasks with Audacity (audacity.sourceforget.net).

I can now have them update their wikis and record spoken tasks right in the classroom. It is this teacher’s dream finally realized!”

Zins-Adams also uses technology to provide authentic, real-world experiences that develop students’ critical thinking and creativity. “Technology can be used to facilitate learning in a way that allows students to self-explore, self-assess, and present material in a more professionallooking and interactive way,” she explains. “Giving students the opportunity to become producers of the content is essential in today’s world.”

For example, she uses Bookemom.com, a website that enables her students to create their own bookstorequality publications.

She also incorporates timely topics and props that engage students while encouraging them to reflect on their use of technology. “We did a unit on cyber bullying,

and the students had to compare the victim to the offender,” said Zins-Adams. To prepare for this activity, students watched a video and read brochures. Afterward, they used hula hoops to create a Venn diagram.

Before she came to Moeller, Zins-Adams had a partnership with a school in Germany and used this opportunity to provide authentic learning experiences by connecting her lessons to the world beyond her classroom.

“Students could blog, Skype, text, email, and send snapshots from their world on a daily basis,” she explained when she became a Teacher of the Year finalist for the Southern Conference on Language Teaching. “My goal as a world language teacher is to empower students with the ability to connect with people from other cultures."

At Moeller, Zins-Adams continued her German culture connection by collaborating with language educators at Sycamore High School and Ursuline Academy. They arranged for a group of students visiting from Ilmenau, Germany, the sister city for Blue Ash, to shadow for a day at the three schools with a few students taking German I who served as ambassadors. “I want all students to be globally attuned and see how these connections can positively shape their perspective of the world,” she said.

With all the advantages of today’s technology, Zins-Adams is quick to emphasize that this resource should be closely monitored to ensure it is an effective learning tool and not a distraction in the classroom. “Technology surrounds us, and we can’t incorporate everything,” says Zins-Adams. “Everyone

has a different situation at their school and in their area.”

So she counsels her colleagues in her PLN to be selective and choose what resources work best for them.

And she advises them to allow their students to be part of their learning process. “Don’t be afraid to ask or have your students guide you,” she says. “Just because you are the teacher doesn’t mean you can’t learn from your students. A true 21st-Century teacher facilitates learning - and learning should be an exchange, not a dictation.” M

Projects succeed or fail based upon whether the leader is fully “dialed-in” and determined to drive a successful outcome. Our personal relationships blossom or falter based on our level of engagement in others’ interests, aspirations, and welfare. At a more intimate level, our engagement to our future spouse is a promise to love, honor, and respect that person throughout our lives. Engagement and personal connection is fundamentally critical to the success of any relationship, project, or organization. The Moeller Alumni Association is fully committed to fostering the engagement, the strong connection and bond, among our 11,000-plus alumni base and our alma mater.

This fall, the strong engagement of our alumni has been evident in numerous ways. Our Reunion Weekend (Classes ending in ’3 and ’8) was a huge success, with hundreds of alumni participating in our Crusader Classic Golf Outing, the Moeller football game and tailgate at Lockland Stadium, and the class-specific gatherings in the evenings at local restaurants. Our Alumni Association’s kick-off meeting at the Green Diamond Gallery was very well attended. And every weekend before home and away football games, M-FAN brings out the Moeller fire truck and grill and hosts a tailgate for the entire Moeller Family - it is the best high school football atmosphere in the country, bar none!

Our alumni’s sense of pride in the success of our past and engagement in the direction Moeller is heading for the future is evident every time we gather together at any event. I hope that as we continue to grow, more and more of our classmates join us at these events, re-engage with friends from all eras at Moeller, and re-connect with that unique feeling of being a member of the Moeller Family.

So please help us get the word out about our activities - and invite your friends to participate as well in any of our upcoming events this year. We have some great events planned for the remainder of the year, and I hope to see you there.

In an effort to further connect and engage our alumni base on numerous levels, we are rolling out a new initiative this year: A “Year of Service” for the Alumni Association. We are teaming up with John Hough (Pastoral Ministry’s new service director) and the students at Moeller for one community service outing each month, including MACH 1, Matthew 25 Ministries, Christmas on Campus, Ronald McDonald House, and Relay for Life. Service has always been a defining trait of a Man of Moeller, and the Alumni Association is very proud and excited to give back to our community and engage with existing students in such a powerful setting. We hope this is a different avenue for more alumni to re-connect with Moeller and know that we all will be very proud of the results. Moeller’s Alumni Association Proudly Announces its 2013 Awardees Mark W. Geraci, M.D. ’79 Distinguished Alumni Award

Presented to a graduate who has given outstanding service to his community and who has distinguished himself as a Moeller alumnus.

“Over the span of several decades, Dr. Paul Kollman has been a constant supporter of Moeller at numerous events throughout the years, always ready and willing to help the young men of Moeller in any way possible,” said Alumni Engagement Director Mary Fischer. He began this extended commitment in 1976 when his oldest son, Paul ’80, began attending Moeller. He has continued that support with a variety of Moeller activities, from caring for Moeller’s athletes to generously supporting Moeller’s Main Event, Annual Fund, and more, even though it has been more than 25 years since his family “graduated.”

Dr. Kollman and his wife, Carita, have a daughter, Anne Marie (who married alumnus Ron Kaes ’82), and two sons, Paul ’80 and Ken ’84. He specializes in internal medicine in Lebanon, OH, and has been in practice for 48 years.

Alumnus Mark Geraci ’79 was born and raised in Cincinnati. Following graduation, he attended the University of Colorado (Boulder campus) and majored in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology. He then attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and finished his training in internal medicine by securing a Harvard Medical School Internship and completing his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1993, after training in pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, he became a faculty member of the University of Colorado and has remained there ever since. Dr. Geraci is currently professor of medicine and the head of the University of Colorado’s Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine, the largest pulmonary division in the country. Currently, he has mentored 35 young individuals in careers of science. Dr. Geraci is also the recipient of the Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year Award and the University of Colorado Hospital Physician of the Year Award.

During the past 20 years, Dr. Geraci and his collaborators have garnered $192 million in NIH grant support for their research. His research interest centers on the role of eicosanoids in the biology of pulmonary vascular disease and lung cancer. During his investigations, Dr. Geraci’s laboratory has produced numerous findings in their cancer prevention efforts, including being able to show for the first time that a six-month use of oral iloprost reverted the lining of the lung to near normal conditions. Plans are underway to use this medication to reduce the recurrence and spread of lung cancer.

Dr. Geraci lives in Aurora, CO, with his wife of 32 years, Kathy (nee Brown), his high school sweetheart. Together they have four children: Chris, age 27; Nick, age 24; Max; age 22; and Kara, age 20.

Brother Eveslage Award Presented to an individual who through years of tireless effort has made significant contributions to the growth of Moeller.

Mike Munafo ’00, his brother Tony ’97, and Dan Neyer ’77 were recently awarded the 2013 Goering Center Award at the Tri-State Family & Private Business Award ceremony.

Mike and Tony earned honors in the 0-15 years in business category (Family) with their company, ProLink Healthcare LLC. Dan received the award for the 16-34 years in business category (Family) for Neyer Properties.

Thanks to the support of Dave Schnittger ’89 and the staff of the Speaker of the House John Boehner ’68, Moeller alumni were able to gather and meet for a Washington, D.C., alumni social in September.

More than 50 guests were invited to the Speaker’s porch for an evening of networking, stories, and an update on the advancement of Moeller High School. In attendance from Moeller were President Bill Hunt and several staff members: Bro. Ron Luksic, S.M., Jeff Gaier, Bill Balbach, Scott Schuster, Kevin Wood, and Mary Fischer. They traveled to D.C. to attend a training conference but were able to take time out to meet with alumni and friends at the nation’s Capitol building.

Students Again Thank Scholarship Benefactors, A Program Growing in Numbers and in Need…

Moeller students gathered with their scholarship donors at the Annual Scholarship Breakfast on September 25. This annual event, which quickly outgrew its original library venue and moved to the auditorium, brings together students and their Named Scholarship donors for a Moeller Family event that continues to capture the hearts of all of those attending.

President Bill Hunt welcomed the attendees, while guest speaker Bruce Buckley ’67 gave a donor reflection describing his family’s reason for giving.

Alumnus Brendan Berigan ’03 also gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of an anonymous donor while he attended Moeller and the impact that it will forever have on his life. “To those of you who generously donate your time and money so that young men who otherwise may not be able to attend a school like Moeller, thank you,” he said. “I never got the chance to thank the person who helped my family in our time of need, so I will thank each and every one of you. “ Andrew Olinger ’15 gave the current student perspective. “I have found the greatest group of friends that I have ever known, and I feel like I go to the greatest school on earth,” he said. “My experience at Moeller has made me into a more appreciative son, a faithful friend, a loving boyfriend, and an overall better person. Moeller has made me realize who I am as a person, and that as a Man of Moeller, I should put God first, others second, and, at best, me third. I would like to thank all of those who have helped me to have this life-changing experience by

Brent Brisben’s ’86 Company finds Gold! $350,000 worth of treasure off shore in Florida WCPO Staff webteam@wcpo.com September 4, 2013 FORT PIERCE, FLA. - A Florida family is reeling in the spotlight after finding more than $350,000 worth of gold off the shore of the Fort Pierce, Fla. over the Labor Day weekend.

The Schmitts, a treasure-hunting hunting family that runs a company called “Booty Salvage,” found seven gold chairs, three gold coins and a gold ring about 1,000 feet off the coast, according to an ABC News report ( http://abcn.ws/15W2tiD ).

“It was a lot of emotion. The first was excitement followed by a lot of almost crying,” said Eric Schmitt, one of the crew members.

ABC News reports it is believed the treasure stems from a hurricane that sunk 11 Spanish ships in 17th Century.

“It’s one of the larger finds that’s been made on this coast in a very long time,” said Schmitt.

Brent Brisben, co-founder of Queen Jewels , the company that owns the rights to dive in the area where the gold was found, told ABC News statues, coins and other gold artifacts have also been discovered in the same area.

“Almost on a daily basis we find shipwreck artifacts, musket balls, pottery,” said Brisben.

Brisben, a Cincinnati native and Class of 86 Moeller High School graduate, says approximately $400,000,000 worth of treasure remains on the ocean floor.

The Schmitts will split their findings among each other and their contractor, Queen Jewels. They will also donate 20 percent to the state of Florida.

By Mary Fischer, Alumni Engagement Director A great slate of events filled the weekend of October 4 and 5 as once again Moeller welcomed alumni celebrating special reunions. This year the annual Crusader Golf Outing kicked off the weekend with nearly 120 golfers participating in a fun and competitive scramble. The outing was held at the Blue Ash Golf Course with dinner and happy hour following a round of golf at the Cooper Creek facility. After the golf outing, alumni joined with classmates remaining at the course, while others traveled to local establishments. More than 200 alumni participated in at least one event offered that weekend, which included the Moe Town Tailgate before the MoellerLa Salle game, an alumni bike ride at the Loveland Trail, and class socials on Friday and Saturday night.

Thank you to everyone for your participation in this great weekend and for all the hard work by our Reunion Class Chairs for putting together such a special weekend for their classmates.

Will Blount ’12 Wins 1st Place, $1,000 at DJ Competition

DJs from around the region came together Thursday, Oct. 17, for Red Bull’s Thre3style University competition to show their skills and captivate the crowd. The DJs from the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, Northern Kentucky University, Miami University, and the University of Dayton made the ”YouTube” DJs at Timothy’s Bar and Grill look silly. DJ Web, also known as sophomore industrial engineering major, Will Blount, represented UD. Blount said he has been DJing for about five years and is a resident DJ at The St. Clair in Cincinnati.

He said he spent roughly a month and a half working on his set for the competition, where he had 15 minutes to “wow” the crowd and judges. Based on skill, originality, creativity, track selection and stage presence, DJ Web blew the first two DJs out of the water with his set. The last two DJs were good as well, but at the end of the night, they were coming up to Blount and congratulating him before the judges had even made their decision.

When DJ Web was announced the winner of Red Bull’s Thre3style competition, the crowd went crazy again. Besides the title of the “best-rocking DJ on campus in the area,” Blount won $1,000.

Blount said he sees himself working with music on the production side on the west coast, but in the meantime, he will continue to DJ primarily in the Cincinnati area.

Sons of Alums Continue Moeller State Championship Tradition

2014 Stag Announced Mark your calendars! The annual Archbishop Moeller High School Sports Stag will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2014, featuring guest speaker, Clark Kellogg, Analyst NCAA Tournament.

Clark Kellogg was named the lead college basketball analyst for CBS Sports’ coverage of college basketball, including the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in July 2008. Kellogg has been a CBS Sports college basketball game and studio analyst for the past 18 years. This year marks his second as lead analyst, partnering with Jim Nantz.

Kellogg is only the second CBS Sports lead college game analyst since Billy Packer joined the Network in 1982. Kellogg called his first Final Four and NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in April 2009. He joined CBS full-time in 1997 as a studio/game analyst for college basketball coverage. Kellogg served as a game analyst for the CBS Television Network’s NCAA Tournament coverage in 1993 and 1994 and as studio co-host for first- and second-round coverage from 1994 to 1997. He has co-hosted THE ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR since 1997.

From 1990-97, he served as an analyst for ESPN’s regular-season basketball coverage.

He has worked for the Big East Network and Prime Sports. Kellogg has also served as television analyst for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers broadcasts since 1990. He played for Ohio State (1979-82) and earned All-Big Ten and Most Valuable Player honors (1982).

Kellogg was the No. 1 draft pick of the Indiana Pacers in 1982 and played five seasons before retiring with chronic knee problems.

He received a marketing degree from Ohio State University in December 1996. Born July 2, 1961, Kellogg lives in Westerville, OH, with his wife, Rosy, and three children.

“Moeller is excited to host Clark for this great annual event!” says Mary Fischer, Moeller’s alumni engagement director. “We will mail invitations in December, and our online registration will begin in January, so spread the word and get your group together today!”

When the 2012 Moeller Football Team won the school’s 8th State Championship last year, it also marked a new milestone in its storied Tradition of Excellence. The team included 11 sons of Moeller alums who had also earned a State Championship while playing football for Moeller.

Class of ’68 Continues to Honor the Memory of the 1970 Marshall Team Alums Award Marshall Scholarship to Spencer Iacovone ’13

Robert Clifford ’99 married Jennifer Appelbaum on November 11, 2012, at The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station in Haddam, CT. Both will practice corporate law in Boston, MA. Two of the groomsmen were Moeller grads Ryan Patterson ’99 and Joe Burgdorf ’99.

Sean Finnerty ’00 married Mary Ellis Kahlstorf in Oxford, MS, on July 27, 2013. Sean’s brother, Casey ’01, served as the best man. The groomsmen were all Moeller grads from the Class of 2000: Kelly Cronin, Jackson Garn, Mike Jackson, Bobby Lyons, Greg Macksood, Mike Munafo, Pat Murphy, Mike Oakley, and Mike Senich.

outing was initiated to ensure that these three members of the Class of 1968 - lineman Mark Andrews, quarterback Bob Harris, and wide receiver Jack Repas - continue to remain in the hearts of the Moeller Community.

The Class of ’68 held their annual Marshall Golf Outing, and this year they also celebrated their 45th Reunion during the weekend of June 15, with a social at the Sandtrap Grill at the Blue Ash Golf Course and an outing the next day at Sharon Woods.

Proceeds from this outing help support the Marshall Scholarship that continues to memorialize the three Moeller alumni and Marshall Football Team members who lost their lives in the tragic plane accident in November 1970. The annual 33 • FALL/WINTER 2013

The Class of ’86 chose Spencer Iacovone ’13 as this year’s Marshall Scholarship recipient. As a senior, Spencer led two Moeller teams to a State Championship. The 2012 Crusader Football Team earned their 8th State Title, and the 2013 Crusader Baseball Team earned their 7th. Spencer is attending Marshall University.

“Special thanks goes to John Widmeyer ’68 and all the members of the Class of 1968 whose passion and commitment to remembering their fellow classmates has made this scholarship possible,” said Alumni Engagement Director Mary Fischer. “You all are truly Men of Moeller.”

Evan Herdeman ’02 married Amanda Rom (Ursuline ’08) on September 7, 2013, at Paul Brown Stadium. His wedding party included Moeller grads Mitch Bailey ’02 (Best Man), Rob Magnus ’03, and Mike Herdeman ’03.

Chris Seifert ’03 married Sarah Holthus on September 14, 2013.

Eric Scherzinger ’03 married Rachel Dickinson on September 7, 2013, in Springfield, OH, at Grace Lutheran Church, and the reception was at the State Theater. Eric is the son of alumnus Steven Scherzinger ’73. Eric’s brother, Kurt Scherzinger ’00, and his uncle, Pat Shea ’86, were both in the wedding party. The couple live in Liberty Township, OH, with their three dogs.

Eric is the commercial sales and marketing manager for Scherzinger Pest Control, his family’s business.

Sam Sharp ’04 married Lauren Clark on August 24, 2013, at the Taft Museum of Art. The couple live in Washington, D.C., where Sam is a litigation associate with the law firm White & Case. Lauren is a literary agent for New York City-based Kuhn Projects.

Menke, Greg ’70 recently was appointed to the Navigation Safety Advisory Council (NAVSAC) as the council’s professional mariner. Greg is currently the director of the Seamen’s Church Institute Center for Maritime Education in Paducah, KY (www.seamenschurch.org). KET TV featured his institute on a show entitled “Kentucky Life.”

Hacker, Mike ’70 reports that he and John Mann ’70 launched a Class of 1970 Facebook page, and it has been a great success in reconnecting many of their classmates, both locally and around the country, and the contacts now even include some of the 1970 Moeller cheerleaders. Recently, the Class of 1970 Facebook page received numerous posts over a USA TODAY article that Steve Kolkmeyer ’70 found that asked, “Which high schools nationally have had the most PARADE All AMERICANS?” The answer: #1

Brogan, Frank ’71 has been named the chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education of Florida.

To fulfill this new post, Frank stepped down as president of Florida Atlantic University.

According to Scott Travis of the Sun-Sentinel, as chancellor, Brogan will be the chief executive officer of the system and responsible for its management. He will also serve as an advocate to state universities in the Legislature. “My motivation is pure,” he said. “If I am asked to do so, I might be able to help other great leaders around the state make a positive impact on the State University System, and as a result, make a positive impact on the state of Florida.”

Hildebrandt, Joseph ’73 completed a four-day, 340-mile American Cancer Society bicycle ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati in July 2013. Through the generosity of family, friends, and co-workers, Joe raised more than $3,000 to support cancer research. After 33 years as controller at Watson’s, Joe will be retiring in May 2014. He plans on doing “whatever he wants” with his time and reports he had a great time reconnecting with classmates at the Moeller 40th reunion.

Carroll, Joe ’99 was the winner of the “Tribute for Heroes” campaign, which is sponsored by the Major League Baseball and PEOPLE magazine. This campaign is a national initiative that recognizes veterans and military service members and builds on each organization’s commitment to honoring our country’s heroes. Joe was selected by fans to represent the Cincinnati Reds at the 2013 All-Star Game.

“While I have never asked for recognition for my service in the military, being nominated and eventually selected to represent the Cincinnati Reds at the 2013 MLB All Star Game was a great honor,” Joe said. “The support I received from the people in Cincinnati, especially within the Moeller community, was both moving and humbling.”

Dornoff, Jeffery ’82 (Jeff) is currently living in Coppell, TX, a suburb of Dallas, with his wife, Deanne, and youngest daughter, Abby, who is 15 and attends John Paul II High School in Plano, TX. The two older children, Andrew and Anne, are finishing up at universities in Michigan and Illinois. Jeff has been the regional manager and director for Amway Latin America Technical Services, and the family has adjusted to living in Texas.

Football is absolutely HUGE in Texas, Jeff says, and he has met some folks who have heard of “the mighty Moeller Crusaders” from Ohio. He last visited the Moeller campus in 2007, and he hopes to return sometime in 2014 to see all the great things happening there.

As soon as he could after 9/11, Joe joined the military where he served as an Army Ranger. When he returned home to Cincinnati, he founded Helping Hands of Cincinnati, a non-profit that helps families fight the financial burdens of cancer. He came up with the idea after his mother, brother, and many family friends were diagnosed with the disease. HHoC helps families facing cancer meet financial obligations that insurance typically doesn’t cover, including travel and living expenses, physical and psychotherapy costs, deductibles, and co-insurance payments. He also volunteers his time with the American Cancer Society.

“The culture, values, and camaraderie instilled while at Moeller are the kind that stick with you well into adulthood,” he said. “Both my military service and starting of a non-profit organization can be traced back to the kind of person I became while at Moeller.”

Martin, Timothy ’09 graduated from West Point on May 25, 2013. While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in operations research and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Quartermaster Branch. Tim will report to Fort Stewart, GA, for his first assignment.

Kariofiles, Drew ’10 recently won the 2012-13 Academic Achievement Award from the North American Hockey League, where he is the captain of the Topeka RoadRunner Hockey Team. He is currently a junior at Miami University (Middletown) majoring in university studies and earning straight A’s in his core courses (97.51% average).

In Memoriam Gaier, Dean ’07 joined the Air National Guard and most recently graduated from Air Force Basic Military Training in San Antonio, TX. During that time he was elevated to the leadership role of “Dorm Chief” and led 45 of his fellow trainees.

Dean achieved the “Warhawk” award, which is given to those who score 100% on the physical test. He was also an “Honor Graduate,” awarded to the top 10% of the graduating cycle of 650 Airmen. Dean is currently in San Angelo, TX, for technical school, where he is training for a job with the Air National Guard.

McCormick, Matt ’08 graduated from Miami University in May 2012 with a degree in entrepreneurship. He interned with Enterprise Rent a Car in May 2011and then the company hired him for full-time work in Chicago following his graduation. Matt left Enterprise and has been living in Guangzhou, China, since February 2013 where he has started a business to help accelerate the assimilation process of Chinese students as they study in the USA.
