Unlike private and parochial schools, Aviator coach Mark Sullivan builds the girls team around swimmers who live in the school district. He also is the boys coach. The third place finish by Sycamore at the state meet this season, along with steady performances during the season, was the deciding factor in The Enquirerawarding Sullivan girls Coach of the Year. . exceeded our expectations," Sullivan said."We knew all along Ursuline was the top team but finishing second at the Southwest Classic was a good indicator we would be all right." Atstate, Mandy Commons won the state championship in the breaststroke while the 200 freestyle relay team of Lori Bednarchik,Jill Ursini, Lindsey Commons and Commons won gold. "Many swimmers quit . after having an off year,"Sullivan said. "Mandy was disqualified in the individual medley last year and fifth in the breaststroke at state. She came back more determined and worked even harder."

Sycamore's Dan Ketchum, here competing at the Southwestern Ohio Classic, finished the year unbeaten and won the 200 and 500 freestyle state championships for the second-straight year. •
etc um ey ,s ig"Aar Dais for next season BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor'. " The best may be yet to come for Sycamore junior Dan Ketchum. The 1998 and '99 state champion in the 200 and ;500 freestyle, Ketchum went undefeated this sea'son and is The Cincinnati Enquirer's Swimmer of the Year. Asked to take over the St. Xavier swimming program three weeks before the sea:son, Jim Brower came out of retirement to lead the 8ombers to a record 21st
BOYS SWIMMING state championship, earning him The Enquirer's boys coach of the year honor. This was Brower's fifth state title in six years coach ing St. X. Since 1970, the Bombers have won 21 state titles and been runner-up five times. Although Ketchum was happy with breaking the state record in the 500 this season,he won't be satisfied unless he snaps the nataionall record at the 2000 state meet.
"I've thought about it," Ketchum said after breaking his own record in the 500 in 4:22.73. "It's something That we'll „ have to look at next year. The national record of 4:16.39 was set 1983 by Jeff Kostoff of Upland,Calif. Ketchum plans to return to Sycamore even if his dad is transferred by Proctor and Gamble. "I'll be around no matter what happens," Ketchum said. "I like the students at Sycamore and all the coacheb. I'll be track next year."

BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor Leadership, dedication and a willingness to work with teammates are three of Katie Farr's many strengths. The team improved because of Kale's spiritual and emotional leadership,"Sycamore gymnastic coach Ed Schwegler said of the junior."She was the only returning starter and no one expected us to do well.." Farr's leadership and outstanding performance earned her The Enquirer's Gymnast of the Year. Anderson's Stacey Neumann is Coach of the Year. Selections were based on coaches'
input. Although Farr wasn't Cincinnati's best gymnast, she was honored based on contribulions to a Sycamore team thatlost its top five gymnasts to graduation and returned only one other on varsity. In the final area individual standings,Farr finishedsecondin the all-around competition, secand on the bars and third on the beam. She qualified to state in the bars and beam. Since Neumann took over the Anderson program five years ago, the Redskins have developed into Cincinnati's best, claiming The Enquirer's poll championship for the first time this year.
