Both Lakotat's are good; best West coaches, like s--29-gFr

BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor When Lakota split into two high schoolsfor the 1997-98 season, many predicted mediocrity for both of the boys soccer programs. . The opposite has occurred with Lakota West voted No. 1 in the Enquirer's preseason poll with Lakota East holding the No. 4 spot behind Moeller (2) and Oak Hills (3).

1. Lakota West It's easy to understand why Lakota West is the favorite.

After all, the Thunderbolts return 11 playersfrom lastyear's team that went 16-2-3 and won Greater Miami Conference, sectional and district championships last season.

"We will be explosive offensively and organized on defense," a confident Cummins said."But, well have an inexperienced goal keeper."

Brett Dunlap (14 goals, five assists) and Andy Lallithan (six goals,eight assists) are the offensive mainstays along with Bryan Heard and Collin Jewett.

2. Moeller:The lack ofexperienced defensive players could be tough for the Crusaders to overcome,especially in early season games.

However, coach Randy Hurley returns leading scorers Scott Lyons (10 goals) and Brian Boroff (11 goals), along with midfielder Joe Carroll.

"We're an inexperienced team in that we have no returning defenders or goal keeper," Hurley said.

3. Oak Hills: This could be the year that Oak Hills emerges not only as a Cincinnati power butalso a state contender.

Coming off an 11-3-3 season, the Highlanders return the entire starting lineup including major college prospects Peter Mike Kaufman and Chris Gaines.

Also, brothers, Shawn and Scott Spillman and Justin and Brandon Dobbs add experience to an already deep and talented squad.

ter men,we expect a higher level of performance," coach Chuck Ausman said."The team has no superstars and.well rely on team unity and cohesiveness."

4. Lakota East Second-year coach Danny Landrum's team compiled a 10-6-3 record in 1997, playing mainly under classmen.

We're strong on defense at at midfield," Landrum said. "But, replacing the attack presence of Osagie Enaiho may be tough."

However, Lakota East returns several key players including goalie Craig Salvati(10 shutouts), midfielder Trevor Snowden and defenders Jeremy Hilen and Casey Fischer.

5..St Xavier: Although the Bombers return nine starters, they losttwo defensive standouts who may be tough for secondyear coach Mark Poblano to replace.

St. X will rely on veteran goalie Brady Watkins, who allowed less than one goal per game last season, along with'a potent offense.

6. Turpin: If coach John Basalyga finds a goalie and someone to put the ball in the net, the Spartans will challenge for the City championship.

Senior striker and two-year starter Brendan Prendaville will anchor the offense along with Chris Brinker while Joe Vogt and Andy Barton will captain the defense.

Many players gained varsity experience last season and this should provide for a solid team concept,"_ Basalyga said. "Our biggest task is to find a `go to' scorer and goal keeper."

6. McNicholas: This is the Rockets'first season competing in Division I but it appears that coach Brian Berning has a team that will contend.

"We have an incredible defense and our offense is very strong," Berning said."But our midfield is a little weak."
