Foreword Clifford Chua Academy Principal Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRts

Good design transforms life experiences. It enhances functionality, promotes accessibility and creates aesthetically pleasing environments and products. Today, design has secured an enduring place in Singapore. Many more are sensitised to how our city has flourished through decades of deliberate redesign — from pragmatic solutions to experiential innovations that have transformed Singaporeans’ everyday lives. Our citizens are growing up surrounded by design innovations that have enriched our lives.

How do we teach design? How do we cultivate an eye for good design? How do we sensitise our students to notice, appreciate and engage with good design in their surroundings? More importantly, how do we equip them with design skills to solve problems which matter to them?

The revised syllabus places emphasis on design thinking approaches across all levels, focusing on process-oriented learning that connects creative problem-solving to real-world applications.

Students work with a broader range of design domain areas — including visual communication, environmental design as well as product and character design — supported by both digital and traditional platforms. In art classrooms, students are discussing design, identifying problems that matter and ideating solutions to prototype. This evolution calls for resources that can guide both teachers and students in navigating design’s expanded possibilities.

The Brief Box represents a significant milestone in STAR’s commitment to advancing design literacy within Singapore’s art education. This curated collection of 60 design briefs, developed together with our Design partners in education, responds to evolving syllabuses and design’s growing importance in nurturing creative, critical and empathetic learners.

As a pedagogical tool, The Brief Box provides structure whilst inspiring open inquiry, supporting clarity in lesson design whilst inviting creativity within authentic constraints. Each brief offers opportunities to develop 21st-century competencies, including critical thinking, communication and collaboration, anchored in big ideas to ensure conceptually rich learning. Each brief represents an opportunity to unlock students’ empathy and creativity.

We are truly grateful to the school teachers, industry design educators and institute collaborators who contributed authentic design briefs, envisioning design as a bridge between imagination and impact — a language for positive change in students’ lives and communities.

What I Wish My Teachers Had Taught Me About Design

by Hans Tan If I could speak directly to teachers today — especially those guiding young people discovering art or design — these are the lessons I wish I had received earlier.

“You Don’t Need To Draw Well To Design Well” I struggled with drawing. In university, classmates sometimes laughed at my sketches during presentation pin-ups, when everyone’s work was displayed side by side. I often felt embarrassed and quietly assumed my drawing skills would limit the kind of designer I could become.

It wasn’t until my fourth year that a professor pulled me aside and said: “You don’t need to draw well to be a good designer.” That one sentence changed everything. It was liberating because it validated who I was becoming as a designer — and I wished I had heard it sooner, before years of self-doubt had settled in. His remark became one of the most important gifts in my education, helping me understand that my so-called weakness wasn’t a flaw, but a clue to my own approach.

I turned to materials. I cut, taped, cast, blasted and assembled. My “drawing” happens in three dimensions. I sketch by manipulating form directly, letting my hands think alongside me. What once felt like a weakness became the foundation of my approach to design today.

Teachers play a crucial role in helping students reinterpret limitations: a “weakness” can become a signature and a problem can become the doorway to originality. Inclusion begins when we expand what counts as skill.

You Are Not Your Work It’s important for young people to understand this early: bad ideas or imperfect prototypes do not define their worth. Ideas will fail constantly. That is normal — and healthy. What matters is the distinction between doubting an idea and doubting oneself.

Idea doubt is questioning the idea itself: “Maybe this concept isn’t strong yet” or “This prototype could be improved”. It energises reflection, iteration and refinement. Self doubt, on the other hand, is personal: “Maybe I’m not good enough” or “I don’t belong here”. Self doubt paralyses thinking, shuts down creativity and makes it difficult to explore new directions.

Teachers can make a real difference by reinforcing that feedback is about the idea, not the student. Even something like “This part might work better with another approach” instead of “You always get this wrong” helps students separate their identity from their output. When students internalise this, they develop resilience, self-esteem and courage.

Your Creativity Has No Boundaries Art and design are powerful training grounds for creativity, but creativity itself is not limited to art or design students, nor to specific mediums. It is an innate human capacity that grows through practise. When students learn to think differently, take risks and iterate ideas, they develop habits of the mind that fuel breakthroughs in science, engineering, entrepreneurship and everyday life.

Teachers can amplify this impact by bringing other fields into the studio. By weaving concepts from science, technology, social studies or real-world problems into creative projects, students see how ideas move across disciplines. The observation, experimentation and reflection they practise in the studio become a toolkit for thinking beyond the classroom. Art and design connect fields that rarely meet, showing students that creativity is portable, actionable and truly without boundaries.

You Are The Design Outcome Projects come and go. Students remain. I wish I had been taught this earlier. The most important outcome of any project is not the object, poster, model or drawing — it is the person who has grown through making it.

When teachers focus on progress through process, students become more courageous. They learn to welcome critique, explore new things and risk failure without fear. Over time, they begin to understand that each project is simply the next chapter in their development. The quality of the outcome matters, but the quality of their growth matters more. In the long run, the most meaningful outcome of any project is the person who emerges from it.

Education becomes transformative when students realise that the real project is themselves — and teachers nurture this transformation every day.

Introduction Art And Design In The Singapore Curriculum In Singapore’s Art curriculum, fine art and design are positioned as interwoven domains, each serving distinct yet complementary purposes. Both art thinking and design thinking fuel creativity, though they do so through different modes of inquiry and expression. As Townsley (2023) explains in Art Thinking vs Design Thinking, design thinking is oriented toward problem-solving: it develops creative solutions by exploring and harnessing possibilities to generate products and services. In contrast, art thinking privileges open-ended inquiry, ambiguity and expression without predefined objectives, allowing for multiple interpretations and subjective meaning (Townsley, 2023).

The Role Of Design Briefs In Learning Because design is anchored in problem-solving, design briefs serve as the critical framework that sets the stage for student learning. A brief defines the purpose, audience, constraints — conditions necessary for students to engage with meaningful design thinking. Pedagogical approaches such as inquiry‐based learning, already emphasised in the syllabus, align well naturally with design briefs: students are encouraged to investigate authentic problems, experiment with possibilities and refine solutions through reflection and evaluation.

Implications For Assessment Recognising the differences between art and design also has implications for assessment.

Fine art, which privileges expression and open-ended inquiry, is often assessed through the originality of ideas, depth of interpretation and aesthetic sensibility. Design, however, requires additional criteria that account for clarity of communication, functionality, problem-solving processes and responsiveness to audience or context. Design briefs thus provide not only a structure for making but also a foundation for fair and meaningful assessment that honours both artistic expression and design effectiveness.

Application In The Classroom In this resource, design briefs guide students through inquiry, moving from ideation (context, task, audience) to prototyping (media and processes) and refinement (guiding questions), while keeping their work purposeful and communicative. They help teachers translate design concepts — such as visual hierarchy and stylisation — and extend understanding of visual qualities, including shape language and colour psychology, into authentic classroom tasks. At the same time, briefs leave space for personal interpretation and aesthetic decisions, bridging the openness of art thinking with the functional clarity of design thinking.

Towards The Aims Of Art Education In doing so, design briefs empower students not only to create but also to connect their ideas to real-world contexts. This supports the overarching aims of art education in Singapore: enabling every child to enjoy art, communicate visually and make meaning through connections with society and culture.

This publication supports art educators in shaping such experiences, offering approaches that foreground problem-solving and process thinking. We encourage teachers to explore the chapters ahead and adapt the ideas to nurture thoughtful and impactful young designers.

Framing Inquiry Through Design Briefs Design tasks form the backbone of design-based learning (DBL), where students engage in authentic, problem-driven inquiry that mirrors the processes of professional designers. Unlike traditional art projects that may emphasise self-expression, design tasks begin with a clear purpose, an identified audience and specific constraints. These features provide students with a structured entry point into creativity, enabling them to balance imagination with functionality.

According to Lin et al. (2025), DBL in K-12 contexts is most effective when tasks are situated in real-world scenarios and require learners to cycle through the stages of research, ideation, prototyping, testing and reflection. This iterative process not only builds problem-solving capacity but also helps students cultivate resilience, adaptability and collaboration.

Well-written design tasks therefore scaffold inquiry in ways that keep outcomes purposeful while leaving space for individual creativity.

Ghajargar (2019) highlights that design education contributes to theory through its unique mode of practice, where constraints are not limitations but enabling conditions that focus creative exploration. In this sense, the design task itself becomes a pedagogical tool. By defining boundaries, it provokes innovative solutions. Effective tasks articulate the problem space clearly, outline the parameters of the brief and establish criteria for success that integrate both aesthetic quality and functional clarity.

For teachers, writing strong design tasks involves four key steps: 1.

Define the scenario Present a relevant, authentic problem that connects to students’ lived experience.

2.

Set constraints and audience Identify who the design is for and what conditions or materials are available.

3.

Embed design concepts Highlight principles such as visual hierarchy, typography or colour psychology as tools for communication.

4.

Outline process expectations Ensure students document ideation, experimentation and reflection alongside their final outcome.

When crafted with these elements, design tasks move beyond mere assignments to become rich learning experiences. They integrate theory with practice, nurture critical and inventive thinking, and prepare students to navigate the complexity of real-world problems through design.

BIG IDEAS Big Ideas are central concepts that give students a deeper sense of purpose in their study of art. In the Upper Secondary and Higher Art Syllabus (2025), they are framed as three guiding ideas — Art helps us to see in new ways; Art tells stories about our world; Art influences how we live. They serve as foundational principles that connect lessons and projects into a coherent whole. Working with Big Ideas encourages students to ask why art matters, beyond applying skills and techniques. They often take the form of broad, age-appropriate concepts such as “knowledge and knowing”, which can be sparked by words, questions or objects (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). This approach enables students to revisit and deepen their understanding over time, building meaningful connections across themes, media and lived experiences.

The significance of Big Ideas extends beyond making stronger art or design projects.

By framing their work around larger concepts, students build dispositions, values and competencies that transfer to wider life contexts. This equips them to engage with uncertainty and complexity — skills essential in a changing world.

GENERATIVE TOPICS Big Ideas are often paired with generative topics or themes that spark inquiry and give students practical entry points. These topics channel broad concepts into directions that can be explored through observing, envisioning, reflecting and developing craft (Hetland et al., 2013).

In this resource, examples include Identity And Culture In Design, Innovation And Technology In Design, Environmental And Social Impact Of Design, and Future Vision And Urban Design.

Such themes link student work to real-world contexts while leaving room for personal and innovative interpretation. By combining Big Ideas with generative topics, teachers can help students develop projects that are conceptually grounded yet open to individual expression.

SCENARIOS AND TASKS Scenarios in design briefs are narrative problem situations that give context and purpose to a design task. Rather than offering abstract instructions, they frame challenges within realistic or plausible settings, encouraging students to respond as if designing for actual communities or environments. This narrative framing transforms briefs from simple assignments into meaningful invitations for inquiry, exploration and purposeful problem-solving.

Scenarios elevate design briefs by transforming them into meaningful tasks that push students to analyse, evaluate and create, rather than simply complete tasks. In architectural education, scenario-based design provides a flexible framework for reflection, supporting students in developing transferable ways of thinking about complex problems (International Journal of Design, 2023). Similarly, research in multidisciplinary design studios shows that scenarios foster collaboration, critical engagement and creative strategy-making, even for less experienced learners (Sustainability, 2024). By balancing guidance with openness, scenarios encourage risktaking and diverse exploration while keeping outcomes purposeful and connected to real-world contexts. In this way, they become powerful tools for authentic learning and innovation.

Audience Beyond building skills in problem-solving and creativity, scenarios also cultivate empathy.

They encourage students to consider how design can affect people’s experiences, values and everyday lives. This human-centered orientation reframes design as a practice of care, listening, anticipating and responding to needs with sensitivity and imagination.

By embedding empathy into the process, scenarios help students see design not only as innovation but also as responsibility, preparing them to create outcomes that are inclusive, socially aware and ethically grounded.

MEDIUM AND PROCESS As prototyping is an integral part of the design cycle, the way teachers describe medium and process in a design brief becomes pivotal. When teachers thoughtfully scope what students will work with and how they will approach it, they guide learners to externalise, test and refine their ideas. This helps students move from abstract thinking into concrete making (Resnick, 2017), while keeping creativity purposeful and ideas open to feedback (Hetland, Winner, Veenema, & Sheridan, 2013).

Clear articulation of process also gives students structure. Breaking work into steps helps them take on complex challenges in manageable stages of exploration, reflection and refinement (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). At the same time, the choice of medium and process should stretch students just enough to extend their abilities, but not so much that it overwhelms them. In this way, design briefs place learning in what Vygotsky (1978) described as the “zone of proximal development”, where students grow most effectively with guidance. Such balance builds resilience while keeping learning tied to clear goals.

Design briefs also benefit from what can be called enabling constraints. These are deliberate choices teachers make to focus the design process. For example, specifying the medium, product format or scale. Rather than limiting creativity, such constraints actually spark it, by giving students clear entry points into the task while still allowing room for divergent thinking (STAR, 2018).

Finally, ideas often remain abstract until they are worked out with real materials. Specifying the medium, whether clay, cardboard, digital tools or collage, encourages students to think with their hands. As Eisner (2002) observed, students learn through the affordances and limitations of the materials they use. This tangible engagement sharpens problem-solving and nurtures adaptability as students negotiate between what they imagine and what the medium permits.

By deliberately articulating both medium and process, teachers create design briefs that are structured yet flexible, enabling students to learn in ways that are iterative, purposeful and authentic to the practices of design.

GUIDING QUESTIONS A strong design brief frames a problem space rather than prescribing a solution. It establishes conditions that encourage students to inquire, experiment and propose responses. Within this structure, guiding questions are essential: they shape how learners engage with tasks, helping them clarify intent, navigate ambiguity, reflect on their process and connect classroom work to real-world issues.

As Eisner (2002) observes, art education thrives on ambiguity and multiple perspectives.

Guiding questions scaffold inquiry by inviting students to observe, interpret and reflect, rather than search for a single “right” answer. They also align with inquiry-based learning approaches that emphasise curiosity and exploration over rote responses (Marshall, 2019).

1. Normalising Ambiguity By Clarifying Purpose When first given a brief, students often look for the quickest or most literal solution. Design tasks are deliberately ill-structured — they rarely have one correct solution (Lin, Chang, Hou, & Wu, 2025). For many students, this openness can be unsettling. Guiding questions redirect attention toward intent and context, encouraging deeper thinking without narrowing creative options whilst normalising uncertainty as an opportunity for creative discovery.

Instead of: Design a poster about recycling.

Ask: “Who needs to see this message?”, “How might design change people’s behaviour?” or “What feelings do you want your audience to have?”

As Eisner (2002) explains in The Arts And The Creation Of Mind, effective teaching structures learning environments in ways that invite exploration rather than dictate outcomes. Greene (1995) refers to this as “releasing the imagination” — using open-ended prompts to invite alternatives and encourage risk-taking beyond convention. Guiding questions serve this balancing role.

2. Promoting Reflection, Metacognition And Self-Regulated Learning Design learning is as much about process as it is about product. Guiding questions embedded into briefs prompt students to become aware of their thinking, articulate choices and justify revisions. This metacognitive awareness supports self-regulated learning (SRL), where learners set goals, monitor progress and adjust strategies (Zimmerman, 2002).

For example: • “What makes you say that?” encourages students to justify decisions with evidence.

• “How has your prototype changed since your first idea?” prompts reflection on iteration and adaptation.

According to Tishman, Perkins, and Jay (1995), reflective prompts help build a “culture of thinking” where reasoning and explanation become habits. Similarly, Rowe’s (1986) work on wait time shows that slowing down and probing with questions deepens student reflection — an essential element of SRL. In essence, the design brief is a powerful pedagogical tool that transforms design assignments into authentic, purposeful inquiry. By balancing structure, through scenario, audience and constraints, with ambiguity (guiding questions), teachers can foster resilience, empathy and innovation.

We invite our readers to reference and adapt the ideas in the Design Briefs chapter to inspire rich, real-world learning in their own classrooms.

Facilitating Critique for Design Tasks

The critique session, or “crit”, is a key pedagogical method in creative disciplines, yet its role and function differ significantly between art and design education. Although seemingly similar in form, the underlying pedagogical objectives and focus areas of a design critique differ.

While artistic practice moves from internal concept to final work in a relatively focused path, the design process is typically iterative, non-linear and cyclical. The design process is also one that is driven by external constraints, utility and empathy. In disciplines such as product design, interior design, experience design and fashion design, students are required to gather feedback from their intended target audience, personas or clients to validate assumptions and uncover areas of improvement through evidence-based inquiry. In design education, the crit can take place in several modes and this multi-modal approach ensures continuous iteration and refinement, often before a final work is produced.

The modes include: 1.

Tutor-to-student consultation, where ideas are shared and prototypes are reviewed for quick formative feedback.

2.

Presentations, where formative feedback may be delivered in a more structured session following a sharing of initial concepts.

3.

Peer critique, where students learn to articulate and defend their solutions in an open setting, such as wall critiques, studio pin-ups or user testing sessions.

The reason for such an approach lies in the fact that design, as an activity, is necessarily grounded in purpose. Design work, regardless of its discipline, is inherently a response to a brief or a problem. Therefore, design crit involves a level of objectivity that examines the design object against what it is meant to do or meant to solve, and — most importantly — who it is meant for. The crit is meant to help the student gain clarity of the design intent, usability, accessibility, feasibility of materials and production, and relevance to both the user and context.

For example, a seating design for the elderly must be evaluated on ergonomics and safety, not only aesthetics. While art crit often prioritises the expression and intention of the artist, design crit serves a broader evaluative purpose rooted in user needs, functionality and real-world contexts, where the concept and the formal values of the design object is questioned against an intended, external objective.

Typically, art crit questions emotions conveyed, symbolic meaning, stylistic influences and the unique voice of the artist. In design, formal qualities, such as colour, typography, textures and form are still important, but they are understood with reference to the artefact’s purpose, audience and constraints. For instance, a critique of a fashion design collection would question the choice of fabric and silhouette against the wearer’s practical needs and comfort, not just the designer’s style. It is, therefore, essential to bring out empathy as a key mindset during design crit sessions. Students must understand who the end user is, what they struggle with and what they value. This user-centred approach distinguishes design from fine art and the critique is rooted in utility and context.

To transition students’ focus, art educators can adopt leading prompts to help unpack a student’s design work objectively: • • • • • •

What is the problem you are trying to solve?

Who is the end user or target audience?

Why is the problem you are trying to solve important to you and the end user?

How does the design address the problem and how might you test its effectiveness?

How do you intend to produce it and why (considering material, labour and cost)?

What are the materials you are using and why are they appropriate for the function and context?

By shifting critique towards inquiry about purpose, function and impact, art educators can effectively facilitate a critique session that aligns with the core principles of design pedagogy, preparing students to create work that is both conceptual and critically functional.
