Hold onto your hats – it’s about to get wild! Embark on a whirlwind adventure through Earth’s most extreme weather systems. Budding city planners can roll up their sleeves in the Makerspace to design and test storm-resistant structures. Experiment with hurricane bowls, twist up tornadoes in a bottle and put your engineering skills to the ultimate test as you battle the forces of wind and water. From calm breezes to chaotic cyclones, this hands-on science will blow you away – rain or shine!

Hurricane season is here and MODS is teaming up with FIU’s International Hurricane Research Center and the Florida Division of Emergency Management! Future storm chasers, meteorologists and engineers will dive into hurricane science and disaster preparedness. Then, explore sustainability and climate adaptation in Florida’s Climate Future City, sponsored by the Environmental Defense Fund. Families can design and test resilient cities incorporating innovative features to withstand extreme weather. Young meteorologists (ages 0-6) can discover how hurricanes form and create “My Hero Helper” portraits. Join us for a hands-on journey into the science of storms, resilience and building a sustainable future!

Get ready for the ultimate play zone where you become part of the game! Race through a candycolored quest, twist and toss on giant game boards and team up for wacky, hands-on challenges that spark creativity and laughter. HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever explores how physics, engineering and cutting-edge technology power the sport’s speed and precision. Bloom in the Sprouting STEM Early Childhood Learning Lab, where little learners build curiosity, confidence, cooperation and critical thinking. Families explore a nature-filled South Florida backyard from a small insect’s view through playful STEM activities, music and story time. This “caregiver and me” program nurtures confidence, kindness and curiosity through cooperative play and discovery.

Step behind the curtain and build a classic stage illusion that still blows minds today. In this Makerspace Workshop, guests will engineer their own Pepper’s Ghost box using wood, acrylic and real tools. Makers will learn how light, reflection and contrast can make images “appear” out of nowhere. It’s science, stagecraft and a little bit of spooky fun all in one.
May 30 • 4–6 p.m.
Light that goes on forever? Let’s make it. In this hands-on build, makers will create a mini-infinity mirror that looks like a glowing tunnel stretching into space and experiment with brightness, spacing and color to customize the effect.
