A great deal has happened since our April issue. Not only does MODMuze have a lot of new leadership, we have also doubled our number of team members!

While you can expect the same enthusiasm from our new contributors, we have set new goals to take our content to the next level. By Allison Clymer Warmer weather means street style has begun heating up on campus.A college campus allows for great diversity in many areas, from people’s hometowns to their majors, interests, and as we’ve seen this semester, their style.

During the buzz of passing periods people can be seen zooming to class, work or meetings and each person has their preferred style for living out the daily grind. While some students prefer a casual take on classroom attire, others prefer to mix it up with vintage pieces or the latest trends. A new school year allows for new fashions to take over campus and new clothing pieces to fill the hallways.

Observe the crowds at the union plaza or sit back at a coffee shop to see these diverse styles in action.

While many stores are becoming more inclusive, Chisenhall says that marketing plays a huge role in determining where to shop.

Chisenhall emphasized that he thinks diversity plays a large role in successful marketing.

“It has a lot to do, I think, with including LGBT people within these kind

Recently there has been some controversy surrounding celebrities who do not identify as non-binar y or LQBT and are endorsing less restrictive gender roles in fashion. When asked about how he felt about cisgender celebrities “challenging” gender stereotypes in fashion, Chisenhall says he feels like that is a good thing, for the most part.

“Better known celebrities or models do help with breaking down barriers in the fashion world since that’s been a very gendered and ver y divided thing before,” he says. Sometimes however, Chisenhall feels like celebrities em-

of campaigns and ads or really talking to them about how they present themselves because then the ads can start using very coded language that might only be okay to use in cer tain communities.”

The fashion industr y has begun to make strides in creating stores with accessible and comfor table places for all customers, but there is still a long way to go.

“I don’t see enough back-and-forth conversation within fashion communities and fashion industries with a lot of trans, gender non-conforming or LGBT individuals that makes me feel satisfied or comfortable.”

Clothes are a way for people to show the world how they want the world to perceive them. For someone who is LGBT this can be especially impactful. Being able to fully express yourself takes courage and it is important to recognize and celebrate those who have been able to make being yourself possible.

by Madeline Manning Let’s be clear: By no means is this a list rules to be followed. Fashion is a sacred and ancient form of self-expression that we at MODMuze hold in highest esteem. These are just a few tips from our team of style exper ts to help you take your shopping game to the next level, whatever your body shape or size. If you take anything away from this articles, know that a wrap dress is a must have for ever y body type! It’s basically “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” but the dress edition.

So next time you’re out shopping, go for a timeless wrap dress, which has been fitting women like a glove for decades.

Inverted Triangle

Dress: To best flatter your silhouette, go for dresses that are slightly flared.

A-line or even a simple wrap dress can will give your body a more balanced appearance.

Shirts: To draw more attention to the lower half of your body, wear dark colored tops with a v-neck or scoop neck.

Avoid horizontal patterns and tr y a halter and even peplum top.

Bottoms: Avoid straight leg pants, instead choose pants that will balance out your silhouette, like flared jeans or wide-leg bottoms. As far as skirts go, A-line or full skir ts are your best bet.

Not only will they give your body balance but will highlight and define your waist.

Dress: Next time you are looking for a dress tr y a wrap or scuba crepe dress, which will form around the waist to best highlight your silhouette. Pencil dresses with belted waists are another flattering option for your figure. Try to avoid any trapeze dresses because it will enlarge your hips and will take away from the oppor tunity to flatter your figure.

Bottoms: High waisted pants and skirts will define your waist and flatter your hips. Exaggerated bell bottom jeans can also accentuate your body shape adding length and following the curves of your hips.

Shirts: Similarly, wrap tops accentuate the top half of our frame and show off your hourglass figure. Crop tops with high waisted bottoms also highlight your even shoulders and hips and allow the opportunity to show your awesome cur ves. The best thing to focus on with this body type is wearing any tops that hit above the hips or hug your hips to

FASHION your body. High-waisted pants are your best friend. Skinny or straight jeans will be your go to because they flatter your curves and hug you in all the right places.

Pear Shaped

Dress: The most flattering dress for your body type is the fit and flare and A-Line. This dress will highlight your waist while allowing room for your curvier hips. The defined middle and tailored top will emphasize your smaller upper-half while also flattering your cur ves.

Shirts: Off the shoulder, V-neck, boat neck and tailored tops are great shirts for drawing attention to your upper frame. Do not be afraid to accessorize your outfit with bold necklaces that will compliment your look perfectly.

Bottoms: Try to avoid bottoms with too much detail, such as, ruffles, ruching and flare. The key is creating a balance between the top and bottom halves of SEP  MODMuze  15

Bottoms: Just as flow works for tops, flared bottoms balance out the weight and length of the legs. To avoid stomach bulge try pairing your tops with low-waisted, straight-legged pants. For a skirt, try a high-waisted flounce skirt, which will highlight the slimmest part of your waste. Overall, keep the weight and concentration above your hips, and highlight those gorgeous legs.

Apple Dress: It’s impor tant to remember to highlight your figure’s strengths such as legs and a deep V neckline. An A-line and an empire cut dress both hit a little higher on your midsection, drawing attention upward. Printed patterns or layers are also a go to as they shift the focus away from unwanted focal points. Shift dresses will flaunt your great shape but won’t hug too tight instilling you with confidence.

Shirts: The key here is to balance out your body’s natural emphasis points.

Flowy tops balance propor tions just as longer sleeves bring attention away from the bust and slim out your arms and midsection.

They will elongate your body while accentuating your natural cur ves. Shirts with embellishments around the bust are also an ideal choice. Scoop neck shirts can also add balance to your silhouette.

FASHION What’s Old is New Yesterday’s fashion trends re-imagined

Fanny packs: Once seen as only nylon, neon sacks worn around waists in the ‘80s, these pouches have been upgraded with luxe designer additions in many silhouettes. Today they can even be seen slung across the chests or shoulders of street wearers.

Chunky sneakers: Originating in the late ‘80s exclusively for exercise and later seen as strictly “dad apparel,” these hefty sneakers can now be seen everywhere from the streets of New York to the catwalks of Prada and even on the Hollywood red carpet. These sneakers are proof that style and comfort can go hand-in-hand.

Denim skirts: Now a game-day staple, this trend began in the ‘70s, though with a longer hemline. They later came back in style in the ‘90s and again in the early ‘00s before resurfacing yet again today.

Flared pants: First seen in the latter half of the ‘60s and later becoming

Everyone has heard their mother or grandmother remark at how astonished they were to see a younger girl wearing an item similar to what they wore in their youth. As we all know, fashion comes in cycles. Today, walking the streets can seem like going through an old year book, as once outdated fashions are being re-envisioned in new and exciting ways by younger generations. Below we have narrowed down the trends of the past that will be especially prevalent in fashion this season.

Candy-colored glasses: Though not very helpful at keeping the sun out of your eyes, these fun spectacles were common place in the ‘00s and today are a major player in making Instagram magic.

Plaid sets: Straight out of the ‘90s movie “Clueless,” colorful plaid sets are seeing a re-occurrence in fast-fashion retailers and on the runways. Try them out in the many colorful variations available this season!

by Dianne Von Furstenberg in the ‘70s, this classic style has seen a massive resurgence in the past few years. Today, it can be seen on anyone from fashion bloggers to students on their way to class.

Scrunchies: Another trend that moms around the country may roll their eyes at is the recent reappearance of the scrunchie. In the ‘80s, they could be seen on anyone from pop stars to exercise aficionados. Today they are an everyday staple around urban cities in many new stylish ways.

Space-saving tips for making the most of your home

Moving into a dorm or small, sorority bedroom can cause a bit of shock to new students as they transition from their typically more spacious homes.

It may seem nearly impossible to fit one’s entire life into a tiny 130-squarefoot room, but it is possible and has been done for generations. We have gathered some of the internet’s best space-saving hacks below. Happy organizing!

same area. To avoid cluttering the counters or drawers we recommend storing styling tools using a a file holder. They can be found at Target or Walmart for as little as $5.

Turn your jewelry into decoration!

Use hanging organizers found at nearly any store where home goods are sold, or get creative and make your own with branches. Command strips can even be used to allow for further flexibility.

Double your desk storage space

by going vertical and adding shelving to your desktop. Placing a short book case or storage container with cubbies allows for school storage to take president in the studying space, because after all isn’t that what we’re here for?

Careful utilization of desk space is pertinent to successful studying, which can be disrupted by rough cords with today’s technology. Try clipping large binder clips to the side of your desk and looping the cords through the handle to allow for less tangles and easier access.

The most simple and productive way to save space in a closet is to only hold on to what you will wear and keep it organized. Keep ragged hangers at bay and the tsunami of shirts under control because organization makes a room seem bigger. Store out-of-season clothes under your bed in a handy slide-out organizer and switch them out as needed.

HEALTH

College students often find themselves struggling with nutrition and weight. It’s so common there’s even a name for it: The freshman 15. University Health Services nutrition counselor and licensed dietitian Elizabeth Lohrman gives counseling to OSU students looking to create good eating habits.

We talked to her, looking for insight into why college students gain weight and how to combat these causes.

“The whole environment is different and it’s easy to slip into some unhealthy behaviors and patterns,” Lohrman says. Despite its name, upperclassman are not immune to the freshman 15. The American College Health Association found that on average, while students only gain seven pounds during their freshman year, this weight gain can add up throughout college if bad habits continue.

An article in the Journal of American College Health explains how a newly-found food independence can be a cause for weight gain when arriving to college. Food independence for a college students most likely means endless processed food, caffeine and sugar. A crammed schedule makes it even harder on a college student to find a healthy meal.

“Think and plan ahead just like you do for class. Think what am I going to do for lunch? What would be a healthier option?” Lohrman says. She also 30 MODMuze SEP

by Maria Mancera spoke about the problem of students skipping meals. Lohrman tells students to get on a schedule that allows them to eat all three meals a day, especially breakfast. Skipping meals causes students to overeat when they finally get around to it, which can lead to weight gain.

She also suggests students not frequent the same place for meals. “If you eat the same things over and over you’re not going to get a well-rounded diet with all the vitamins and minerals you need.”

For a well-balanced meal, Lohrman suggests checking out Red Earth Kitchen in the Student Union. If you have any dietary restrictions, check out The Natural in North Dining, where all menu items are allergen friendly and gluten free.

When looking for a snack on campus check to see if it has the Choose Orange Logo. The Choose Orange program uses The Dietary Guidelines for Americans to denote healthier food choices. It encourages students to eat more whole grains and vegetables and limit saturated fats and added sugars.

If you’re looking for vegan snack options, look for Tasty Bite brand items that are carried all over campus.

The best way to avoid unhealthy snacking is to simply not keep the temptation around. Always keep healthy options in your home, so that

when you do crave sweets you’re more likely to eat something healthy first. In addition to keeping unhealthy snacks away, always carr y a healthy snack with you. It’ll keep you from buying junk food while you’re on campus.

Be careful with what you drink when watching your calorie intake. Energy drinks and pre-sweetened coffee can be loaded with calories you could be getting from food that has more nutrients.

If you must have caffeine to function, tr y caffeinated tea or lightly sweetened coffee, you’ll still get that boost of caffeine without the extra sugar.

Know your facts and your resources on campus. Always plan ahead and go to class prepared with your snacks and reusable water bottle. Breaking old habits can be hard, but can be done.

Once you’ve made it a habit to make better food decisions it becomes second nature.

While an uneven manicure or a wax that’s missed a few hairs can leave you feeling frustrated, nothing is quite like the feeling of distress after walking out of the hair salon with a bad haircut or chunky highlights. LIFESTYLE College Life to Corporate World Transitioning seamlessly into the next phase of your life

by Desiree Atkins Graduation signifies a person entering a new chapter in their life and is a mark of change. Graduating from college and entering the corporate world is life altering. Graduation is the moment ever y graduating senior dreams of - until the moment after graduation when you realize you don’t know where to go from there. You think to yourself, “now what?”

The first year out in the “real world” will take time, patience, discipline and a lot of trial and error to adjust. We ask ourselves how someone we look up to managed to land the position they’re in or accomplish what they did. How did that person get an internship? How do people manage to set themselves apart and stand out? How do we cope with the feeling of failure if our first entr y-level job isn’t our dream position?

These are all common concerns coming out of college, so you’re not alone.

But don’t sit and fret; now is the time to take advantage of the resources available on Oklahoma State University’s campus.

Cour tney Webb, Ar ts & Sciences adviser at OSU, shared helpful tips and advice for students transitioning from college life to the professional work place.

“Get started on getting into group activities, because once you get into the real world you will be working with 36 MODMuze SEP

people from different personal and socioeconomic backgrounds and all kinds of differences where they look and think differently from you,” Webb says. “So, if you have those experiences in college that will help you advance in the work force.”

Webb suggests everyone start working on their resumes, joining organizations and working to have internships, no matter the classification. It can be easy to feel as though you deserve that top position you’ve been dreaming of while in college, but is it realistic to believe everyone will start off at their dream job? Webb suggests students be content and happy with where they start off in the work place.

“There are very few majors that guarantee you a dream job immediately after graduation, so I think if I could go back in time, I would tell myself not to sweat the small stuff,” Webb says, reflecting back on her experience transitioning from college to a professional work environment .

Webb says not to panic over having a temporary position for a job such as a secretary, going to graduate school upon completion of undergraduate school or even possibly star ting your career at your dream job and being at the bottom of the totem pole. Regardless of the blood, sweet, tears and time that you may have put into your bachelor’s degree, it doesn’t guarantee you that position or job you want straight out of college.

“This is real life and you can’t come up on top right after undergrad, you have to work your way up,” Webb says.

“That’s going to look differently for others, so also keep that in mind.”

Jawauna Harding, OSU Senior Career Coordinator, also gave her take on how to transition from college life to the professional work place. Harding spoke about having to schedule and plan for your week ahead of time, realizing you don’t get breaks, communicating effectively and even having to meet new friends.

“One thing to think about would be, whenever you leave college, it’s kind of that shock of a schedule change,” says Harding. “You don’t realize how different life is going to be when you step into your next career because you’re used to being on a student schedule.

Even if you did have a par t-time job or worked you still had a little bit of flexi-

bility and freedom and things were put more in your schedule and more on your time, but when you step into the working world, you’re on a different expectation level, a different professional plane.”

Harding says transitioning to corporate life can be a handful. She says scheduling is what sets a lot of students back because in the real world there aren’t breaks, and you have to schedule appointments during work, which can be stressful. Communication and planning ahead of time is something a lot of new graduates are not used to.

“One thing I didn’t know about in the very beginning, so probably like my sophomore or junior year, that wasn’t even on my radar, was really gaining experiential learning opportunities, and that means internships and jobs that will help launch you into your future,” Harding says. “I didn’t realize how important and critical that was to finding and launching me into my career.”

Harding says there are a lot of opportunities and a lot of jobs out there so take advantage of the resources offered. She says if she would’ve known about resources available on campus ahead of time she could have saved herself from panicking and stressing during her senior year. Be proactive in using the services available on campus. Visit career services, where Harding and other counselors can look over your resume and cover letters, which can help you stand out when applying for jobs or going to career fairs on campus.
