Flourishing We have officially closed the book on 2018 because a new year is here!

As winter comes to a close and the spring season star ts to bloom, we here at MODMuze are flourishing as we continue to grow our team, bringing in new members and leadership, including myself as editor!

In this issue, you’ll find fashion and fun for every season. Our “Skating in Love” fashion spread will give you first date look inspiration, while our “Palentine’s Day” article gives you ideas on how to make the best out of the holiday with your friends.

Each student on Oklahoma State University’s campus has a story to tell, and the clothing helps us portray our personality without words. At MODMuze, we recognize that our campus is a diverse place blooming with all types of students. We strive to capture candid and organic moments of ordinary life at Oklahoma State that highlight this diversity.

The students of OSU comprise a crowd in which each individual tells their story through fashion, and Street Style helps us understand a bit more about this campus we call home.

Those of you planning a spring break getaway somewhere warm and sunny are likely star ting to think about what new bikini you’re going to rock poolside or what stylish one-piece will make you stand out on the sands. Together we picked out our favorite bathing suit trends to help you make some waves this spring break season.

Our pick for color for this season is anything bright. Stand out in a red-hot bikini that will be sure to compliment your tan. Just make sure to use sunscreen, so your sunburns don’t outshine your bathing suit! (Net-A-Porter “Haight Triangl Bikini” $95)

Our favorite trendy bikini pattern is Cheetah! This fierce pattern is back in style and sure to bring out your confidence. Cheetah print looks great on a bikini or a one-piece, so pick out your favorite, and you’ll look purr-fect!

There is a growing number of representative style icons, but that’s not to say there isn’t a ways to go. For Black Histor y Month, we want to highlight the strides the fashion industr y has made while acknowledging the progress yet to come.

Elle magazine cites the first time a designer uses a model in the mid1800s, but the first major black model wasn’t until Donyale Luna, who was the first black woman on the cover of Vogue in 1966. Just this year, there have already been instances of African-Americans getting in trouble at work or school for their hairstyles.

Despite the lack of representation of black designers and models throughout fashion histor y, black culture has been a major influence in many trends in fashion, music and ar t in general.

Consumers are now demanding that brands be more inclusive, from makeup shades to ballet shoes. Just last year the first ballet shoes were designed to match darker skin tones.

We interviewed a stylish member of our MODMuze family, Khavor y Lee, about his firsthand experience with representation and style.

“The stores I tend to shop at depend on the season. My favorite stores to shop, at the moment since it is winter, are Zara, Banana Republic and American Apparel. But usually during the spring and summer I get most of my apparel from Urban Outfitters and local thrift stores.”

Who do you consider to be your style icon?

“Honestly, the way that social media has grown has substantially impacted the way fashion is viewed, especially when it comes to influencers on Instagram. There are so many influencers that really impact the fashion community. However, with the algorithms used

by so many social media platforms, it makes it hard for many talented creatives and fashion enthusiasts who have so much talent and potential to be seen. I believe one of the biggest influencers in fashion and for myself at the moment is Justin Livingston (@ justinliv). He has a style that is high fashion but is also easy to take inspiration from and make your own. I have a love for simplistic fashion that takes calm tones and clean lines into com-

plex yet cohesive outfits, and he executes that so well.�

8 Ways to Fight Off the Winter Blues

Learn some tips to nurture your mental health during the cold, winter months

by Chase Congleton not only is SAD temporary, but it is easy to manage throughout the winter months! Here are a few tips and methods to help fight off seasonal depression and keep feeling like yourself.

1. Use light therapy. According to the Mayo Clinic staff, daily use of bright artificial light is effective in lowering the symptoms of SAD. This meth-

Seasonal affective disorder, often abbreviated as SAD, occurs during the wintertime due to the shortened amount of daylight during the season.

The National Institute of Mental Health states that because of the lack of natural light, SAD becomes increasingly common. Symptoms include fatigue, change in appetite or weight, depression and social withdrawal. However,

od helps even out the circadian rhythm that become off-balance during the winter months. Before using an artificial light source, be sure to contact a doctor or physician to see if it’s right for you.

2. Use natural light. Because of shortened light hours, the best possible time to get an adequate amount of natural light would be during the morning hours. Going on a morning walk or taking a stroll around the neighborhood are good ways to get vitamin D naturally through real sunlight.

3. Get a vitamin D supplement. If you are unable to get an ar tificial light or get natural light from where you are at, then a vitamin D supplement would be the next best option.

4. Talk to a friend. The topic of conversation does not have to revolve around your feelings of depression.

Simply talking to a friend over the phone or going out with them can help eliminate the feeling of social isolation during winter break.

5. Exercise. A consistent exercise schedule will not only make you feel better mentally, but you will feel better physically as well. Start with a simple exercise regime and work your way up from there.

6. Eat healthier. Forgoing junk food and choosing healthier options, such as water instead of soda, will help improve how you feel throughout the day.

7. Write your thoughts down. A healthy way to vent without talking to an individual is writing your thoughts down in a journal. However, this step is open to your interpretation. Do you want to write down details about your week or do you want to draw a picture of an animal? Whatever you end up doing, you are creating art through words or illustrations.

8. Seek professional help. According to an article from iFred.org discussing the different types of depression, if you feel depressed for longer than two weeks, it is recommended to seek FEB MODMuze 29

professional help through therapy or a psychiatrist. Your life matters despite what your depression tells you.

On today’s college campuses, mental illness is a less taboo topic thanks to the transparency of our generation.

While still difficult to discuss in-depth for some, mental health has become increasingly visible as the stigma around it is slowly removed. Mental health exists. It is OK not to feel OK. As in-depth research about mental illness increases and conversations become more constructive, people benefit. Not every day will be your best day, but it is imperative that you tr y to live each one of your days to the fullest.

Unconditional Love Love; more than just a romantic word

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, love is on ever yone’s mind, usually meaning couples are mooning over how wonderful one another is. However, there has been an increased amount of “Galentine’s Day” movements, evolving the day into a day of womanly love or a self-care event. This Feb. 14, challenge yourself to look at another variation of devotion; unconditional love.

“Loving someone through thick and thin, no matter what” According to Dictionar y.com, unconditional love is known as “affection without any limitations, or love without conditions.” As described in a Psychology Today ar ticle, it is the idea of being loved as we are, which includes unending patience and unselfish mutual love. Relationships that come to mind when faced with these definitions may consist of that of a parent and child, dog and owner, siblings or a lifelong friendships. These relationships may be pushed at times, but at the end of the day, the two care for each other in a way outside of the typical romantic love.

The first being Oklahoma State junior, Alex Andrews, who recently rescued a stray cat she now affectionally calls Poke.

How did you meet Poke?

“My dog was attacking him in our backyard, so I saved him. I pulled my dog away and thought the cat would run off, but he just looked back at me like, ‘Help me,’ so I took him inside.”

Did you feel an immediate bond?

“Yes, definitely! I have always loved animals, and there was something about him being so helpless. I knew if I left him he would have died so I couldn’t just leave him.”

Do you feel a stronger connection to him compared to your other pets?

“No, I love them all equally. I feel Poke loves me the most, and I am not my other animals’ favorites.”

Do you think Poke realizes what you have done?

“Yeah, I do. One time I carried him outside, he started to freak out and

“Seoul, South Korea.”

How old were you when you were adopted?

Five months old.”

How did your parents meet you?

“They went on a trip to South Korea and visited the adoption agency. They came for 10 days and visited me for a few days before moving back to the states with me as a baby.”

What does unconditional love mean to you?

“Loving someone through thick and thin, no matter what.”

How do you think your relationship with your siblings [three brothers] is different from biological siblings?

“It didn’t feel any different growing up besides the physical differences, and they never acted like it was different. It felt normal.”

wonder why he was going outside. We had to put food out sparingly because he would eat it all up ravenously like it could have been his last meal. Now he has calmed down and realized he has food and can take his time. He will only go to sleep if my mom wraps him up in a blanket that smells like me.”

Thus, the bond between a rescued pet and their owner is cherished because of the realization that they have a strong, unbreakable connection. On a different note, I interviewed Eva Wiggers, an OSU sophomore, on her adoption.

Do you think your relationship is different with your parents compared to other peoples?

“A little bit. They came to South Korea, but in a general sense, it is pretty normal. We share Korea as where we met, especially when we went back for my senior trip.”

What do you love most about your mom and dad?

“They’ve consistently supported me, and I feel like I can be myself around them. I feel the love they have for me even when I am away at school.”

Do you believe your love for your parents would have been different if they were biological?

“No, I don’t think so. I was adopted so young I think of them as my biological parents as they are my parents.

It’s like the argument of nature versus nur ture, and they nur tured me.”

Though the feeling of unconditional love may vary in many different relationships, one keyword runs throughout, and that is the suppor t felt. So, this Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to show those all-around you, love.

Tour De Spring Break Take the strain out of spring break with these easy-to-plan trips.

The stress of moving back to school and the pressure of classwork often consume the first few weeks after Christmas break. Before you know it, spring break is almost here, and you have zero plans. To help calm your spring break FOMO, here is a list of places to visit that don’t require a lot of planning.

1. Panama City Beach, FL

With miles of white sand and beachside bars, Panama City is a combination of relaxation and nightlife. There are opportunities to scuba dive or lounge on the beach during the day and visit seafood restaurants with live music at night.

2. The Blue Whale - Catoosa, OK

If you’re looking for a unique Instagram post and a funny memory to share, the Blue Whale is the place to visit. The quirky 80-foot-long blue sperm whale has been around for over 40 years and is located alongside Route 66.

3. Fredericksburg, TX

Settled by German immigrants in the 1800s, Fredericksburg is full of history and Texas charm. Main Street has a row of restaurants with authentic German cuisine along with breweries, wineries and shopping spots throughout the city.

4. Underground - Oklahoma City, OK

The Underground is a series of tunnels and skywalks built - you guessed FEB MODMuze 37

it - under downtown OKC. There is a restaurant in the tunnels, and the Underground displays ar t and photo galleries.

5.The Center of the Universe Tulsa, OK This destination is an acoustic anomaly that has puzzled visitors for years. Any noise you make standing in the middle of the circle is echoed back to you louder than the original sound. Can you figure out its secrets?

Since we’re all Cowboys here, it felt only right to include this attraction.

These 40-foot-tall boots are designed to look made from ostrich-skin and prove the saying is true: everything’s bigger in Texas.

8. HOPE Outdoor Gallery - Austin, TX

Local artists turned blank concrete slabs into a public ar t galler y. When you visit, you have the chance to appreciate others art or even make some of your own.

9. Praying Hands - Tulsa, OK

These hands, made from over 30 tons of pure bronze, stand outside the entrance of Oral Rober ts University. As the sun goes down, the fading rays fall on the statue and turn the bronze into a deep gold, the ultimate setting for a golden hour picture.

10. Fort Wor th Water Gardens - For t Worth, TX

Waterfalls, water vapor bridges, and deep pools complemented with futuristic architecture provide a soothing place to visit and rest, and, of course, take pictures. Wherever you go and whatever you do, don’t forget the most impor tant part of this week off; have fun!

Palentine's Day How to make the most of the holiday with your friends

If you’re single on Valentine’s Day this year, I’m right there with you! Valentine’s Day can be a drag if you’re spending it by yourself. This year, I’ve decided that I want to enjoy the day instead of staying home and scrolling through my Instagram feed of happy couples. So, the MODMuze team has compiled a list of things your single self could do this Valentine’s Day by yourself or with your pals!

Have a movie and wine night. Get your best single friends together for a wine and movie night. Chat about why you don’t need a significant other to be complete, and to watch ever y cheesie love movie you can find! Start with “Legally Blonde” and end with “Bridget

With being a month and a half into 2019, it’s probably becoming difficult to go to the gym every day and get your sweat on and trust me, I don’t blame you. Hitting the treadmill and lifting weights can eventually get boring if you get stuck do-

ing the same workouts over and over again. Keeping variation in your workouts can help you stay motivated, and going to one of the various classes at the Colvin is a great way to spice things up. That’s why I attended and reviewed seven workout classes that the Colvin offers to share my experience and hopefully encourage you to do the same! Working out with a friend is also a great way to stay motivated,

Monday: TRX at 5:30 p.m. Offered: Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

A high-intensity, cardio and conditioning class for 50 minutes.

TRX is a great class if you want to get your sweat on and if you want to achieve that full-body burn. It’s full of many different exercises that you can adjust the intensity of to fit your needs.

The instructor of this class, Lauren, is high energy and is ver y upbeat and motivational. This is also a great class to bring your gym buddy to because many of the exercises you will do require you and a par tner to switch off between workouts. This is the perfect class to work on all aspects of your strength, and it will get your hear t pumping!

Tuesday: Zumba at 4:30 p.m. Offered: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. A medium-intensity, dance style class for 50 minutes.

Zumba is a great class to tr y out if you’re tired of your same cardio routine, and you’re looking for something light, upbeat and fun. If it’s your first time to attend the class, you may struggle a little with learning the dance moves, but the class does the same 6-7 dances every time. This means if you attend the class a few times, you are sure to get down the footwork. Along with the same dances that are involved every week, the instructor teaches 2-3 new ones so that the classes always stay fresh and exciting.

Wednesday: Hip-hop at 8 p.m. Offered: Wednesday at 8 p.m. A low-intensity, dance class for 1 hour 15 minutes.

The hip-hop class at the Colvin is fun and enjoyable for dancers of all lev-

els. It’s perfect for those nights when you’re sitting at home bored with nothing to do. There’s nothing better than having fun with your BFFs while also staying active. The instructor, Taylor, is energetic and keeps the class positive. Every week she teaches a new dance count-by-count, so it’s easy and simple to learn. Everyone in the class is always so supportive, so you’re sure to leave the class feeling great.

Thursday: Kickboxing at 7:30 p.m.

Offered: Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A high-intensity, cardio and conditioning class for 50 minutes.

Kickboxing will give you a high-intensity cardio workout that you are sure to be feeling the next day. This class combines martial arts and punching bags to work up a sweat. I have tried to go to this class multiple times, and I normally get there about 15 minutes FEB MODMuze 45

early, and a lot of times the class is already full. I would highly suggest getting to the Colvin for the class at least 20 minutes early so you can be sure to get a spot. Also, this will give you time to get your hands wrapped before throwing punches!

Friday: Strength and Stretch at 12:10 p.m. Offered: Monday at 5:30 p.m. Friday at 12:10 p.m. A low-intensity resistance class for 40 or 50 minutes.

Strength and stretch is the perfect mix of pilates and yoga. It incorporates light cardio in the beginning to get your heart rate up, and then it is compiled of multiple simple full body exercises.

You can customize this class to your level because you can choose how much weight you want to use for your exercises. Many of the moves you will do in the class can be modified to be more or less difficult. The instructor, Debbie, fills this class with moves that may seem simple, but they are sure to make you feel the burn!

Saturday: Spin at 8:30 a.m. Offered: Monday and Wednesday at 6, 4:30, 5:30. Tuesday and Thursday at 6, 5:30. Friday 6. Saturday 8:30. Sunday 5:30 p.m. A high-intensity cardio and conditioning class for 30 or 50 minutes.

Spin is taught by multiple different instructors, and they all make you sweat! They play fun, upbeat music that is sure to keep up your morale while you believe that your legs may be on the verge of falling off. This class will give you an intense cardio and leg workout. You may feel so out of breath during the class, but once you’re done, you’ll be wanting to go back again.

Sunday: Yoga at 6 p.m. Offered: 46 MODMuze FEB

Monday and Wednesday at 6:30, 12:10, 7:30. Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30, 9, 12:10. Friday 7. Sunday 6. A low-intensity, mind and body class for 40 or 50 minutes.

Sunday night yoga is the perfect end to a week full of workout classes!

During this class, poses are held for multiple minutes which allows you to get a deep stretch. While the Sunday yoga class is slow-paced, there are multiple other yoga classes during the week which are more fast-paced. Also, the class on Sunday night usually focuses on stretching a specific part of the body while other classes are for the total body.

The Colvin Center offers so many great opportunities to reach your fitness goals. Attending any of the classes there can help you stay upbeat and keep from getting burnt out on working out. Don’t be nervous to try new classes, grab a friend and hit the Colvin!

Health Frozen Yogurt Strawberry Bites Ingredients Strawberries Greek yogurt Toothpicks Directions 1. Wash the strawberries.

2. Cut the berries to your desired size.

3. Put the yogurt in a bowl.

4. Use a toothpick to dip the strawberry in the yogurt.

5. Place the dipped strawberry on a parchment paper lined pan.

6. Once all the strawberries are dipped, place in the freezer, and let them sit for at least two hours.

Greek Yogurt Chocolate Brownies Ingredients ¼ cup almond flour ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon sea salt ½ cup bittersweet chocolate chips 2 tablespoons melted butter ½ cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs ¾ cup vanilla Greek yogur t Directions

2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and grease a 9-by-9 baking pan.

2. Mix almond flour, cocoa powder and sea salt.

3. Melt chocolate and butter together.

4. Mix sugar, Greek yogurt and vanilla.

5. Mix in eggs.

6. Add dry ingredients.

7. Add chocolate chips.

8. Pour batter into the pan, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

¼ cup chocolate chips to mix in.
