They are joined by musician and composer Leyla McCalla, whose recent work explores the rhythms and stories of her own Haitian heritage.

With a focus on collaboration and experimentation, We All Break creates a dynamic and engaging live experience which celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Haiti while pushing the boundaries of contemporary music.

Acclaimed musician Rhiannon Giddens is joined by her full band and special Richmond guests The Legendary Ingramettes. Inspired by the discovery of the African American Heritage trail on Martha’s Vineyard—a living, evolving memorial site for heroic stories of loss and resilience—this lushly envisioned work uses textile imagery to connect people and places across time, revealing post-colonial ghosts and mythologies which still hold sway today.

Beautifully handcrafted puppets abound in an icy landscape for this heartwarming tale of friendship. Ned Haskins’ original score brings live music together with a good dose of silliness for a comedic, wordless performance celebrating our ability to create connections, despite our differences. by Inon Barnatan around a selection of Franz Schubert’s final works. Barnatan is joined by acclaimed musicians Alisa Weilerstein, cello, and James Ehnes, violin, performing the Trio No. 2 in E Flat.

TERENCE BLANCHARD, Fire Shut Up in My Bones Sun 12 Nov 2023 7:30pm Camp Concert Hall In 2021, Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones was the first opera by a Black composer performed at the Metropolitan Opera. Based on Charles M. Blow’s harrowing memoir, this powerful musical exploration of race, sexuality, and identity offers a rare opportunity to hear the composer performing in an intimate concert version of his own work, which will stay with you long after the final notes have faded.

Song of the North tells the tale of Manijeh, a courageous heroine from ancient Persia, who must rescue her beloved and help prevent a war. This epic love story (which is family-friendly for ages 7 and up) employs a cast of 500 handmade puppets, projected animation, and an ensemble of nine actors and puppeteers, weaving art and storytelling into a spectacular multimedia reimagining of a classic Persian tale.

His improvisations are spontaneous, filled with surprise and wonder, and complemented by a rigorous appreciation of the formal architecture of music. The two sides of Mehldau’s personality—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other to create a sublime form of controlled chaos.

Their palpable joy in music-making has helped make them one of today’s most highly acclaimed classical quartets.

University Dancers celebrates 39 years of engaging dance with our annual concert that brings the work of three innovative guest choreographers, each of whom is based in New York City—Ephrat Asherie, Larry Keigwin, and Take Ueyama. Aligning with the department’s mission, the creative work by both choreographers utilizes contemporary dance to educate and engage community.

The concert will also feature new works choreographed by Department of Theatre & Dance faculty.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who The New York Times calls “one of this country’s most original and illuminating writers,” brings us an inventive 21st century riff on the 15th century morality play, Everyman. In this contemporary tale, Everybody (chosen from amongst the cast by lottery at each performance) goes on a compelling journey through our greatest mystery—the meaning of living.

QUEER PIONEERS: LGBTQ+ HISTORY THROUGH THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF ROBERT GIARD On view 28 Aug - 8 Dec 2023 Harnett Museum of Art

American photographer, Robert Giard (1939-2002) made portraits of over 600 LGBTQ+ pioneering activists, writers, and scholars during the last two decades of the 20th century. In this exhibition, twenty-five of those images have been assembled to tell the story of the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

The exhibit is curated by Hunter O’Hanian, independent consultant in LGBTQ+ art and history projects.

The exhibition brings together a rich array of works on paper, breaking down the various methods and materials used in modern artistic practice. Showcasing 50 superb prints and drawings, this exhibition samples the breadth and beauty of International Arts & Artists’ own Hechinger Collection, which has the unique theme of hand tools and hardware. Focusing on the creative process, the featured works represent a variety of media and disciplines at an artist’s disposal. Audiences will learn about the intricacies of these assorted techniques, and directly see how an artist makes a statement through the graphic arts.

CRYSTALS: MINERALS FROM THE COLLECTION On view through 4 May 2024 Harnett Museum of Art

This exhibition features more than 70 crystal specimens chosen for their color, form, and distinction. Presented in a multicolored arrangement visitors will see some of the rarest and most exquisite crystals In the University of Richmond Museum's permanent collection, including pearly Mexican selenite, wine-red South African rhodochrosite, and deep green Brazilian emerald.

Organized by the University of Richmond Museums, the exhibition was curated by Matthew Houle, curator of museum collections, and Martha Wright, assistant curator of academic and public engagement, University Museums. The exhibition and programs are made possible in part with support from the University of Richmond’s Cultural Affairs Committee.

Featuring prints from the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center, this exhibition presents a selection of portraiture spanning six centuries and examines the various roles that portraiture has played in portraying the identity of the sitter. Historically, portraiture has been utilized by society’s elite to communicate messages of power, prosperity, and beauty, and the works in the exhibition demonstrate the gradual shift from the traditional intentions of portraiture in the sixteenth century to an expressive use of the genre in the twenty-first century.

Organized by the University of Richmond Museums, and curated by Sophie McClellan, ’23, art history and leadership studies major, and 2022 Harnett Summer Research Fellow, University of Richmond Museums.

The University of Richmond’s 2023–2024 Tucker Boatwright Festival of Literature and the Arts will be hosted by the Film Studies Program. This year’s theme is “Reimagining Community in Cinema,” which explores how communities are lost, found, built, and envisioned in documentary and fiction film from the silent era to the digital age.

The year-long film screening series, “Reimagining Community in Cinema,” includes over a dozen films. Each film will be introduced by a guest speaker (filmmaker/scholar), a faculty, or a student, and followed by Q&A. In conjunction with the 7th Annual Pocahontas Reframed Film Festival in Richmond in November 2023, a University of Richmond symposium, “Reframing Indigenous Communities in North America” includes a keynote lecture and a film production masterclass that reinvigorate conversations about telling stories of indigenous communities.

Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) was born and raised in Ferndale, Washington. He received the 2022 Infinity Award in Art from the International Center of Photography and is a 2022 MacArthur Fellow.

Single-Event ticket purchases are final. Single-Event patrons who are unable to attend an event are asked to contact the box office. With more than 48 hours' notice, tickets may be exchanged for those of equal or lesser value to another show in the same season. An exchange fee of $5/ticket will be applied. Single-Event patrons contacting the box office with less than 48 hours' notice may transfer tickets to a friend or family member or donate tickets that cannot be used for resale.

Series Patrons Enjoy priority access to tickets, discounted ticket fees, and the option for flexible nofee* exchanges. Series patrons who are unable to attend an event are asked to contact the Box Office no later than 5pm one business day prior to their event. TICKET DONATIONS Tickets that cannot be used may be returned to the Box Office to be donated for resale.

Accessible seating is available at the back of the orchestra in Alice Jepson Theatre (row K, center) and Camp Concert Hall (row S). All other seats in both houses require stairs. Assistive listening devices for hearing enhancement and earplugs for sound protection are available at the Concierge Desk for most performances. ASL interpretation will be offered at a select number of events.

NIGHT OF SHOW The Box office opens 90 minutes before each event. We can often accommodate last-minute purchases in person, but all night of show tickets are subject to availability. To ensure your seat we encourage you to secure tickets in advance. Online ticket sales end 60 minutes before showtime or when an event is sold out.

PROGRAMS These will be offered in print and digitally for the 2023-2024 season. Ticket holders will receive a link to the digital program in their pre-show email the week of the performance. Patrons can also pull up the digital program on a device using a QR code provided on the night of show.

PARKING IS CONVENIENT AND FREE Parking is available in the Modlin Center main parking lot (W87), which is located off Westhampton Way. On busy nights, an additional overflow lot (W85) is located on Westhampton Way across from the Jepson Alumni Center. Event parking is free.

CONCESSIONS Beverages and snacks will be available for purchase before performances and during intermission at most Modlin Arts Presents performances. Drinks are permitted inside the venues so that you can relax and enjoy the performance. Food must remain outside the venues.
