Welcome to the Modlin Center's 2019-2020 Season!

This season marks our twenty-third year of offering dynamic and thought-provoking performances, and creating compelling artist residencies that engage our communities and serve students and adults of all ages.

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage and ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, we reflect on the past while looking forward to the continued work needed to achieve equality for all. In that spirit, we offer a season that honors the achievements and impact of female artists. Highlights include a host of residency activities as well as performances

by Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Lucinda Williams, Jazzmeia Horn, Aoife O’Donovan, and more.

Spotlight events include Martha Graham Dance Company’s The EVE Project, L.A. Theatre Works’ SEVEN, and Allison Miller and Boom Tic Boom’s In Our View: Rivers and Social Change, which was co-commissioned by the Modlin Center.

This season, we will also examine the meaning of “place” and explore the profound commonality of the arts in our all-too-often segregated society. Our music programming will weave the threads of cohesion with performances ranging from Marty Stuart and Balsam Range to the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Nobuntu, YAMATO, and an array of jazz events.

In addition to eclectic concerts, thrilling cirque performances, engaging family programming, and thought- provoking theatre and dance, highlights from this season include the immersive environmental work Transient Landscapes composed by Eighth Blackbird and University of Virginia Professor of Composition and Computer Technologies, Matthew Burtner; the interactive Indian Ink Theatre Company production of Mrs. Krishnan’s Party, and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Taylor Mac in Holiday Sauce, a raucous celebration of the season's dysfunction.

Through the generous support of our members and sponsors, we are able to offer free programming presented by the University of Richmond Department of Theatre & Dance, Department of Music, and in the Modlin Arts Presents series. The Department of Theatre & Dance will host this season's Tucker-Boatwright Festival of Literature and the Arts with a focus on “This Ground.” The festival will include original commissions and site-specific works throughout Richmond.

Finally, the University of Richmond is delighted to be a partner and destination for the 2020 Menuhin Competition. Known as the world’s leading international competition for young violinists, the competition will take place in various locations throughout the city and at the University of Richmond May 14-24, 2020.

conservatories of Havana, Cuba, is a protégé of Quincy Jones, who took him under his wing when he defected to the United States in 2009. His riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by his Afro Cuban and jazz roots.

Martínez’s musical training came directly from the streets of his childhood neighborhood, Cayo Hueso in Old Havana, and he has subsequently performed with artists such as Sting, Paul Simon, and Wynton Marsalis.

After meeting in Germany in 2015, the American jazz pianist Brad Mehldau

and composer Brad Mehldau and universally admired British tenor Ian Bostridge quickly professed their admiration for each other’s work and discovered a shared love of Bach, jazz, and lieder (typical nineteenth century German songs). As their friendship grew, so did the idea of a song cycle centered on investigating the themes of the modern sinuous nature of human desire as it exists in love and adoration. As a result, Mehldau began composing a set of music with lyrics drawn from the poetry of Blake, Yeats, Shakespeare, Goethe, and

others. In 2019, Bostridge and Mehldau premiered this new song cycle, The Folly of Desire, fittingly paired in a program with Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe (The Poet’s Love).

Fossil fuels deep in the earth become atmosphere, a glacier becomes floodwater in a basement on the other side of the world, coasts become the sea, and the sea becomes plastic.

We live in an era of transient landscapes. Through creative sound art and ecoacoustics, the Transient Landscapes project connects the human imagination to the environment.

Percussionist Matthew Duvall and ecoacoustician/composer Matthew Burtner lead a collective including ensemblein-residence Eighth Blackbird, Chicago-based percussion ensemble beyond this point, and a contingent of local volunteers to combine the ephemeral presence of sound with the material quality of a glacier to create a large-scale live and interactive performance installation. The University of Richmond’s 2019-2020 Tucker-Boatwright Festival of Literature and the Arts will be hosted by the Department of Theatre & Dance in collaboration with the Modlin Center for the Arts. This year’s theme is "Dancing Histories: This Ground."

The festival will present performances, lectures, panel discussions, and residencies by artists whose works reflect a unique engagement with contemporary politics and the interplay between history and memory.

Commissioned dance works will be in conversation with the 400th commemoration of the arrival in Virginia of the first enslaved Africans, including a collaboration between choreographer MK Abadoo, historical strategist Free Egunfemi, and local community justice workers that reclaims intentionally submerged histories of resistance in Richmond. The festival will also include a site-specific work by Salt Lake City collaborators Charlotte Boye-Christensen and Nathan Webster of NOW-ID performed by the James River.

Additionally, Company SBB // Stefanie Batten Bland brings Bienvenue, a community-driven work, to the University of Richmond campus. Other artists include award-winning lighting designer Jennifer Tipton, Puerto Rican performance artist Lío Villahermosa, and independent choreographer Sean Aaron Carmon.

GENERAL INFORMATION BOX O F F I C E ALL PATRONS MUST HAVE A TICKET TO GAIN ENTRY INTO THE PERFORMANCE HALL. Tickets may be purchased online at modlin.richmond.edu, in person at the Modlin Center box office, or by phone at (804) 289-8980. August through April, the Modlin Center box office is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and beginning 90 minutes prior to most performances. Visit modlin.richmond.edu or phone (804) 289-8980 for a list of summer hours.

DISCOUNTED TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE for Modlin Center Members at the Partner level or above, subscribers, senior citizens age 62 and older, children age 12 and younger, groups of 20 or more, University of Richmond (UR) employees and students, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members, and non-UR students with a valid student ID. Multiple discounts do not apply.

SAFETY AND DISRUPTIONS: Please contact the Modlin Center box office to find out if a performance is suitable for young audiences. All patrons, including infants and children, must have a ticket to gain entry into the performance hall. Please be considerate of other audience members. Disruptive patrons will be asked to exit the performance hall. Use of hand-held electronic devices during performances is strictly prohibited. Use of such devices may result in confiscation of the device or removal from the venue.

ACCESSIBILITY: When purchasing tickets, please inform the box office of any required accommodations. If tickets are purchased in accessible sections by patrons that do not require accessible seating, those patrons may be moved at the discretion of house management.
