Barefoot Puppet Theatre Barefoot Puppet Theatre is on a mission to activate imaginations through the art of puppetry. The company has been touring performances, building puppets, presenting workshops, and participating in arts residencies since 1997. Founded by Heidi Rugg, Barefoot Puppet Theatre weaves

original works blending whimsy into their works as they handcraft each puppet, focusing on sustainable materials including locally-produced wool and papier mâché. The company tours throughout the country (and beyond!), sharing the art of puppetry with schools and libraries as well renown venues such as The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Puppet Showplace Theater in Boston, The Smithsonian Discovery Theatre, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and The American Theatre. To learn more, visit barefootpuppets.com About the Artists Heidi Rugg, Puppeteer Heidi Rugg is an interdisciplinary artist with her feet firmly planted in the worlds of both performance and visual arts. She is the founder of Barefoot Puppet Theatre and has toured throughout the country (and beyond!) presenting to schools, libraries, theatres, museums, and venues including The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Puppet Showplace Theater in Boston, and The Smithsonian Discovery Theatre. She is thrilled to be sharing this performance with you today at the Modlin Center!

As a puppet builder, Heidi works primarily with natural fibers and has a passion for sustainable practices in art-making. In her writing, she enjoys tackling challenging themes. Her work has been supported by grants from The Henson Foundation, Puppeteers of America, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Arts. In 2005, Heidi received an UNIMA-Citation of Excellence, the highest American award for puppetry.

Heidi believes in the power of the arts to transform education and change lives. As a Teaching Artist of over 20 years, she has worked with all ages – from preschool classrooms to masterclasses for professional puppeteers. In 2021, she received a Bachelor’s of Interdisciplinary Studies degree in Arts Integration from Virginia Commonwealth University.

When she is not on tour, Heidi maintains a studio practice from her home on the edge of a swamp in Richmond’s Northside where she lives with her husband, Sam, their daughter, an immortal gecko, a rescue pup, and a host of puppets.

Genna Beth Davison, Puppeteer Genna Beth Davidson is a professional puppeteer, designer, fabricator, and all-around theatre artist.

She graduated from the University of Connecticut’s Puppet Arts program with her M.F.A. in 2022. Prior to graduate school, she lived in Washington, DC where she co-founded Wit’s End Puppets and designed for the likes of Pointless Theatre and Brave Spirits.

She especially loves designing and building large theatrical puppets and is currently creating an octopus, a seahorse, and a mermaid for Nehprii Amenii’s 2024 production of HUMAN at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia. She’s grateful to Heidi Rugg for the opportunity to take on a puppeteering role in New Squid on the Block and to offer mentorship as a fellow maker. Sam Rugg, Set Construction/Troubleshooter Sam Rugg is the Technical Director for Barefoot Puppet Theatre, a position he has held since 2001. He has a passion for good quality tools and equipment.

As Technical Director, he keeps the touring vehicle running and oversees sound, lighting, and set construction. A former mechanic of 15+ years, Sam enjoys spending time tinkering with small engines, pinball machines, and just about anything mechanical. He is active with the local maker scene in Richmond and serves on the Board of Directors for the Build Forward Foundation which operates Build RVA, a community makerspace.

Sam attended his first Puppeteers of America festival in 2002 and helped run “Le Taque Café” as a fundraiser for the National Capital Puppetry Guild (NCPG). He joined the guild shortly thereafter and is now the longest serving member of the NCPG Board.

Ned Haskins, Composer/Cello Ned Haskins, a Richmond native, is an instrumentalist, composer, producer, teacher, and web developer.

He has taught and been an orchestral cellist and freelancer in Virginia, Florida, New Mexico, Colorado, Boston, and New York City. He returned to Richmond in 2012, where he currently manages and books events for Ninja Strings, a local collective of professional string players offering music for public and private events across the Eastern Seaboard,

and is a subsitute cellist with the Virginia Symphony. He has been involved in over a dozen central Virginia-area theatrical productions as a cellist, having performed with the Virginia Repertory Theatre, Capitol Opera Richmond, TheatreLAB, the Swift Creek Mill Theatre, and the Firehouse Theatre.

Ned holds a BM in cello performance from Florida State University, where he was a scholarship student of Lubomir Georgiev, Kim Jones, and Greg Sauer, and studied with and was the graduate teaching assistant of David Schepps at the University of New Mexico. He enjoys music of all kinds, gardening, chess, difficult hikes, and being outdoors in general. He has also previously taught and designed the curriculum for the upper grades math classes at the Richmond Waldorf School.

Christopher Johnston, Violin Christopher Johnston is a violinist and the director of orchestras at Cosby High School in Chesterfield VA. For the last 25 years, he taught an award-winning orchestra at the Thomas Dale High School Specialty Center for the Arts. Mr. Johnston received a Masters degree in Music from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002. He was concertmaster of the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra for more than six years and performed as a regular sub with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra under Mark Russell Smith for another 6 years. He freelances in the Richmond area and performs with the Somerset String Quartet and Ninja Strings. Mr. Johnston also guest conducts and adjudicates throughout the state.

He won a National award from the National Association of Libraries for his work bringing student created compositions and performances to preschool reading programs in Chesterfield County. Additionally, he served as an on-screen music performer, coordinator, teacher, arranger, and historical consultant for several TV and Film productions including HBO’s John Adams, Spielberg’s Lincoln, and most recently with AMC’s TURN among others. He would like to extend his deepest gratitude to Ned Haskins and all the musicians and performers who will make this great event possible. It is a joy to make music with you today!

Doug Adams, Trombone Doug Adams is a Durham, NC native and an ECU graduate in music education. His musical career spans over 40 years with notable accomplishments

and milestones. Current member of LARCENY Party Band providing vocals and trombone. He spent 30+ years as lead singer and trombonist for Richmond based KOS Band (aka The Kings of Swing). He’s also lent his talents to the beach music scene with Fat Ammon’s Band, The Band of Oz, The Catalinas, and The Entertainers, which he co-founded. Happily married for 38 years and proud father of Christopher and Grace Adams.

John Creger, Bass John C. Creger is a professional freelance musician who plays Double Bass, Electric Bass and Guitar.

With a background as a retired music educator, private teacher, conductor, composer, arranger, and recording studio owner, John is heavily involved in the world of music. He has performed with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra, University of Richmond Symphony Orchestra and currently holds the position of Principal Bass in the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra. He taught Orchestra in Henrico County Public Schools for 30 years and was Adjunct Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University early in his career.

Over the years he has performed in numerous chamber ensembles, pit orchestras, duos and trios playing a wide variety of musical styles including classical, rock, pop, jazz, and country. You may also find him performing in his band, “Premiere”, a Corporate/Wedding cover band, and in his original Funk/Fusion Jazz project “FunkyFinger”, where he showcases his compositions and arrangements.

John lives in Ashland, Virginia with his wife, Jeanette, and enjoys spending quality time with his growing family, travel, cooking, hiking, good food, and property construction and restoration when not making music. Anamarie Diaz, Flute Anamarie Diaz is a flutist, educator, arts administrator, and performer in Richmond, VA. She currently teaches privately at her home studio, DiazFlute Studio, where she strives to push and encourage personal growth through music lessons.

Anamarie also teaches Music Theory at Randolph Macon College.

Anamarie is the Artistic Director of Classical Revolution RVA, a non-profit organization aimed at integrating classical music into the vibrant art scene

of Richmond, Virginia. Each month she curates a classical music variety show, Classical Incarnations, that features local classical musicians. In addition, Anamarie works to expand the reach of classical music to new audiences throughout the Richmond area.

As an active performer, Anamarie regularly performs with Classical Revolution RVA, the Chamber Music Society of Central Virginia, and subs with the Richmond Philharmonic. As a solo artist, she performs recitals throughout Richmond with other local musicians.

Anamarie received a BA in Music from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015, and a Master of Music in Performance and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Musicology from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2019. Her primary teachers include Tabatha Easley, Erika Boysen, and Diana Morgan.

Leilani Fenick, Piano Leilani Fenick (Pianist/Music Director) is a professional pianist, and vocal coach in the Richmond area. She has collaborated with professional vocalists, performing throughout the US, China, Italy, and Mexico.

Mrs. Fenick is actively involved in the Richmond professional theatres as a music director and pianist and also teaches in her private studio.

Some of her most recent shows as a music director include: Something Rotten (Dogwood Dell), Mamma Mia! (Homefront Players), Gabriel (Firehouse Theatre), Kiss Me, Kate (Homefront Players), Passing Strange (Firehouse), Dames at Sea (Swift Creek Mill), and Gutenberg! The Musical (Quill Theatre). Many of her shows have been nominated by the Richmond Theatre Critics Circle for several awards including Best Musical and Best Musical Director and was awarded Best Musical Director for her work in Rent (Firehouse). Mrs. Fenick holds a Master’s in Piano Performance from VCU. She studied with Dr. Sonia Vlahcevic and Prof. Melanie Day. Ben Grondahl, Bb Clarinet Ben Grondahl studied Clarinet performance at The Boston Conservatory in the late 20th century, but since then has enjoyed being a part of folk and world music groups (with an emphasis on klezmer), musical theater pit orchestras, and other small ensembles and bands playing a wide variety of genres. The clarinet continues to surprise and delight him with its incredible versatility and heart.

Ivy Haga, Bassoon Ivy Haga has a wide array of performing experience that includes quux collective (featuring a blend of acoustics and electronics), Northern Neck Orchestra, Classical Revolution RVA, Williamsburg Choral Guild and Williamsburg Symphony. Her career extends to the NY/NJ/PA area with groups such as Chelsea Opera, Riverside Symphonia, Tripleplay Winds, Princeton Symphony, New Jersey Arts Collective, tour of South Korea with New Jersey Philharmonic; and also played on several albums with National Chamber Players. Ivy holds degrees from Rutgers University (M.M.) and Virginia Commonwealth University (B.M.). Dedicated to her students, she teaches at Collegiate School and Greater Richmond School of Music, and maintains a private studio. Ivy is committed to seeking collaborative opportunities with like-minded musicians and enjoys playing in Richmond area.

Jane Kiser, Oboe Jane Kiser is an active member of Richmond’s music community. She serves as co-principal oboe and English horn with Richmond Philharmonic, Richmond’s professional level community orchestra.

In addition, she is principal oboe of the VCU Health System Orchestra, “Music and Medicine,” and principal oboe of Commonwealth Winds, a wind ensemble comprised of music educators and performers from the central Virginia region. Jane also enjoys an active free lance career playing with many area church choirs.

Jane holds a music performance degree and a pharmacy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She works as a pharmacist at Parham Doctors Hospital in Richmond.

Jack Preston Price, Trumpet Jack Price, a Richmond freelance trumpet player, began his music career in the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and continued as a freelance player in the New York City Metro Area. He earned a Bachelor of Music from Appalachian State University and is a former pupil of Roy Stevens, Elmer White, and Pat Garnett. Jack performs with the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra, Richmond Pops Band, and theater productions at Swift Creek Mill, The Beaty Theater at Ft. Gregg-Adams, and The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. He is a frequent soloist at his home church, Chester United Methodist

Church, and other churches in Greater Richmond. By day, Jack is a marketing writer and business development advisor.

Luz Recinos, Violin Luz Recinos is a violinist and music educator based in Richmond. Originally from Chesapeake, VA, Luz began playing violin when they were 10 years old and has been intensively studying solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire for almost a decade. An active performer, they have performed at Chrysler Hall, the Chrysler Museum, the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Harrison Opera House, Zeiders American Dream theater with Kishi Bashi, and Sound of Music Studios. They earned their BM in Music Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2023 and currently play in the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra. When they’re not performing, Luz is a dedicated teacher and enjoys teaching violin lessons to students of all ages. Luz also loves creating art and co-owns a polymer clay sculpture and jewelery business named Insomnia Jewelers with their partner.

Sage Wright, Violin Sage Wright performs regularly in the Richmond area as both a collaborative musician and soloist. She has subbed professionally for orchestras in the Midwest including the Owensboro Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, and Carmel Symphony Orchestras and currently substitutes with various local groups including the Richmond Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony, and Virginia Symphony.

Sage has had an interest in music from a young age and is passionate about engaging youth in the arts through community music making. She currently teaches and coordinates music classes for preschool through schoolaged children as Director of Music at FRIENDS Association for Children, a nonprofit that serves low-income families in Richmond City. She also teaches lower and middle school strings classes at St. Christopher’s School during the academic year.

Originally from Rocky Mount, Virginia, Sage now lives in Richmond and enjoys teaching private violin students in addition to her other commitments. She holds a Master of Music degree in Violin Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Music Industry from James Madison University.
