“Michael Rennie was ill, the day
the earth stood stilI, and he told us, where we stand. And Flash Gorden was there, in silver underwear, Claude Rains was the invisible man”. – Science Fiction Double Feature, from Rocky Horror Picture Show. I have always been a science fiction fan. I was obsessed with 2001: A Space Odyssey when it came out and the books of Kurt Vonnegut, Arthur C Clark and Ray Bradberry where mind blowing and the Day the Earth Stood Still with the robot Klaatu represented so much. My good friends were Trekkies when I was in grade school and junior high and my friend Terry Allen had a comic book store. When Star Wars came out, it was a game changer, but science fiction in the home was Star Trek and Lost in Space. This month, Star Trek turns 60 and it’s important to celebrate the importance of the that show. From “I’m a country doctor”, to “Beam me up Scotty” to “Live Long and Prosper”, the imagination and lexicon that these inspired were as big as the universe. As I write this, I learned of the deaths of Dolly Parton and Tim Curry. Dolly’s goodness was intergalactic and she is an example of using fame and power for good to help those in need. More people in charge need to be like her. You can be successful, but you can also deliver goodness and hope to those with less. Simple really. I saw Rocky Horror when it came out along with Phantom of the Paradise. I have seen the play in London and attended my fair share of midnight showings and Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank-n-furter made a mark that few will forget. Our project this month in ModestoView was to find better ways to connect our
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
community and bring people together. I say it frequently, that Modesto’s secret sauce is our volunteer network. We have doers, givers, leaders and organizers. Modesto needs to do all it can to make sure we have a local economy that will support our philanthropic needs. This is really important. If you have a role in this direction, it’s mission critical that we have locally owned companies that will give back. Thanks to this we have events like the Community Brunch that supports many non-profits, Edible Extravaganzas that help youth and people in need. We have walks and concerts for Alzheimers and Cancer research and Senior Strides to keep people moving, and Powers of the Purse to support community giving and it all takes a strong network of those that can give and those that will volunteer, or both, and Modesto is lucky to have this network. So do what you can to get involved, support these local organization and make sure you look across our whole community to see where there is a need. This month we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and this is where we truly experience the depth of Modesto. We are all better when we understand and engage in other cultures. Most of the issues we face nationally occur because people don’t learn about other cultures, people and customs. When we all work together, it is better. Period. We learn, we explore and we get smarter and learn more compassion and empathy. This is where we need to be and I am grateful for the many people in the many cultures in our community that educate me on a regular basis. Heck, cruising is back and that’s thanks to our Low Rider community, so I hope you will enjoy the
Low Rider Holiday on September 26. There is so much fun to be had this month. Opera Modesto presents the Barber of Seville (Figaro, Figaro Figaro anyone?), the final month of Music In the Plaza happens each Friday night in 10th St Plaza, free thanks to our local sponsors and soon we will be getting ready for the 27th Annual MAMA Awards. Make sure you get Middagh Goodwin your MAMAnee recommendations. As you know, we love to celebrate local music. This month, the Picnic at the Pops and the opening of the Gallo Center 26/27 season with Idina Menzel is happening. Such variety and riches of talent, and the thing these all have in common are volunteers and donors and doers. We need every one of you here in Modesto. I am grateful to our advertisers that make it possible to write, design, print and deliver ModestoView magazine each month. Please make sure you support these local businesses. I hope to see you out and about and thank you for taking the time to read ModestoView. in Modesto at the Legends of the Cruise Ceremony in 2021. . So we put aside our love of Star Wars this month and showcase the franchise that really opened the door for science fiction empires.
Before 2001: A Space Odyssey, where a Hilton space sta-
tion was served by a Pan Am space shuttle or the Jedi, the force, Death Star, resistance or the evil empire, there was Captain James T. Kirk and the 23rd century starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701. Star Trek made its television debut on in September 1966. Here we are, sixty years later and this show left an indelible mark on science fiction and pop culture. Modesto’s George Lucas was inspired as it showed that science fiction was commercially successful
and even may have been interested in the rights. But Gene Rodenberry’s creation has spawned decades of spin offs, and even the Wrath of Kahn. Close to home, Modesto’s Gene Winfield was tasked with created the starship lander, the Galileo. Appearing in TV and movies, this Winfield creation lead to more TV and movie cars. Gene’s Reactor appeared in Star Trek episode “Bread and Circuses” as the Jupiter 8. It also appeared as the Catmobile in Batman as well as Bewitched. The Reactor appeared

The Victorine family never disappoints. April, Rob, Orion and Dean bring the outer-space world of Star Trek as their shuttlecraft Galileo drops in on what appears to be planet Earth. Attracted by the Brenden Beacon, they landed in a modern-day 10th St Plaza. Or is it? Will the “residents” be friendly? Will they return to the Starship Enterprise? Will Scotty beam them up? Michael J Mangano has transported our local family into the Star Trek universe and we are having a lot of fun.

SONGWRITER VIEW
Let’s Write Something Together
by Mattéa Overstreet
What if we wrote a song together?
For this edition of Songwriter View, I’m opening the column up to everyone with an invitation to participate in a collaborative writing experiment. A piece of writing assembled from the words, memories, places, and imaginations of people across our community. You don’t have to be a songwriter to participate. You don’t even have to think of yourself as creative. Do you have a sentence or phrase you’ve always liked? A memory that keeps coming back, or a place that you miss? Something your grandmother used to say. A strange image you noticed on your way to work. Even if you’ve never put these things into words before, send it anyway. Send me a lyric, a sentence, a few words, a memory, a question, a place, a dream, something funny, something sad, something ordinary. You can submit anonymously or include your name if you’d like to be credited. I’ll gather your contributions and see what kind of collaborative piece we can create from them, with the possibility of turning our collection of words into a song. We have AI tools and technology that
8
can gather information from the collective library of material and transform it into something new, generating words, images, music, and ideas with generic human input. They can produce a finished product instantly and avoid the messy, fun, and surprising process of people actually making something together. This project is interested in embracing real people and bringing their perspectives, humor, contradictions, and lived experiences into the same space, just to see what happens! No prompt engineering or algorithmic curation. Gathering our community’s collective ideas and blurbs until something exists that we all created together. This is an open invitation. Let’s write something together. You don’t need to polish your contribution, make it rhyme, or call yourself an artist. Give me something honest. I’ll bring the pieces together and see where they take us. Scan the code to participate and keep reading Songwriter View each month to see what becomes of our collaboration!

MAMA VIEW Whose Your MAMA
by Middagh Goodwin
The 27th Annual Modesto Area Music Awards will be taking place
at the historic State Theatre on Tuesday October 20th, doors at 6 pm. As always, the event is free for all MAMAnees, each getting one guest. MAMAnees can be submitted to mamarecords209@gmail.com up until September 15th with voting going live Sunday September 20th. Please do not encourage your friends and family to message that you should be nominated, we know your grandma loves you. At this time, we are looking for your colleagues, promoters, venue owners, entertainment writers, photographers, etc.to step up and let us know you are making moves in the scene. When voting goes live on September 20th, that is the time to have everyone go to modestoareamusic.com to cast a vote in your favor. Voting closes at 11:59 pm, Sunday, October 18th. One thing that always help keep you on our radar year-round is to email you shows to events@modestoview.com and post in the ModestoView and things to do Facebook group. We will add your local events to our calendar. Performers that play live are picked from this year’s nominees. To keep the schedule somewhat reasonable for a Tuesday night, not every category is represented with a live performance. Keep an eye the first week to ten days after voting starts, to see if you are invited to perform. This year we will have a very special Lifetime Award winner, Jim Burgett a 1953 Ceres High School graduate, Modesto area’s very first Rock and Roll star. His first gig was at Yoris Grove on Taylor Road south of Ceres. Soon his band would be playing shows in Lake Tahoe, Ceres and the Bay Area to crowds of 1200-1500 people in the late 50s and early 60s. By 1962 Jim
was doing a residency with his band at the American Legion Hall of South Lake Tahoe (7 days a week in the evening) and a 6am to noon gig at Harrah’s (6 days a week.) Burgett booked other bands in the mid to late 60’s Santana, Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry and more. He released two full length albums between 1961 & 1969, on various labels including Columbia, MGM. A full article featuring Jim Burgett in the October issue. Last year’s winners who would like to co-present get in touch so we can coordinate things. You will have 3 weeks to place your vote after we go live; you get one vote and must verify it to count. I always encourage you to go through every category to see who is nominated. Go check out a venue you haven’t been to, check out some new bands, or comedians, maybe you will find a new favorite. Remember that live music is best enjoyed with your friends.

HISTORY VIEW Ed J. Lyng Co.
By Harrison Power @historyharrison
First Ed J. Lyng Warehouse on North 9th Street - Modesto Bee April 1974
Modesto Bee, October 1938 - Ed J Lyng Company ber 15, 1938. Edmund Lyng garnered a reputation for being community-minded and hospitable towards others, especially toward those in need during the Great Depression. Farmers hit hard by the depression received credits for seed from Lyng’s, simply to be paid back when crops were harvested. Lyng employees were instructed to keep some of the screened out damaged beans and corn meal, to be given out to those out of a job, out of a home, and in need. In an April 1974 Modesto Bee article on Lyng’s Golden Anniversary, company Vice President D. L. Caster was quoted saying, “He [Lyng] was always looking for the other fella. When times were toughest, a person could always get the makings of a meal at the warehouse.” The business was run by the company’s namesake until Edmund J. Lyng passed away in 1949, with operations continued by his son and business partner, Richard E. Lyng (1918-2003), who led the company as President until 1967 when he was appointed by Governor Ronald Reagan to be Deputy Director of California Department of Food and Agriculture. He then served as Director of CDFA from 1968-1969. Following his public service at the state level, Richard Lyng served as the Assistant Secretary of the USDA for Marketing and Consumer Services for President Richard Nixon from 1969-1973. After some time in the private sector, Lyng returned to public service when he served as the Deputy Secretary of Agriculture from 1981-1984 for President Ronald Reagan. Following a brief retirement from government, Richard Lyng was nominated and confirmed to be the 22nd U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1986-1989 under President Ronald Reagan, which made him the first Californian to hold the Cabinet position. The Ed J. Lyng Company’s offerings of
With harvest season fast approaching, there are reminders all around us of Modesto’s rich agricultural heritage and the generations of producers and manufacturers who were pivotal to the local food and feed economy. From the former Grange Silos to old production plants along the old Highway 99 alignment, some of these buildings and structures are getting repurposed to serve Modesto in new ways. Around the corner from the Modesto Silos is the former Ed J. Lyng Warehouse located at 610 North 9th Street, which is home to the Graffiti USA Museum! While the Graffiti USA Museum strives to honor and recreate Modesto’s cruising legacy and classic car era, the building was key to the Lyng Company’s regional business for nearly 60 years. Founded in 1924 by Edmund John Lyng (1883-1949) and his wife Sarah McGrath Lyng (1878-1952), the Ed J. Lyng Company was a family-managed bean and seed company that came to be associated with both gubernatorial and presidential administrations through the second generation of Lyngs to run the business. Originally located in Shoemake Warehouse No. 6 on North 9th Street, the Lyng Company provided bean cleaning services, bean and grain storage, and sold poultry and stock feeds. In June 1938, the Ed J. Lyng Company started construction on a new reinforced concrete plant at the corner of Coldwell Avenue and Highway 99 to replace their prior warehouse, which had been located two blocks away and was removed to make way for the Highway 99 expansion to four lanes between Modesto and Salida. The facility, made up of two buildings, had a capacity to hold 150,000 100-pound sacks of grain or seed. Completed at a cost of $50,000, the grand opening of the Ed J. Lyng Warehouse at 610 North 9th Street was held on OctoFOLLOW US:

agricultural products were expanded over time for changing crops and consumers. Sunflower seeds, which started off as a small batch harvest, became a business keystone with production supporting national supplies of bird seed, planting seed, and confections. The Grange Silos were leased by the Lyng Company to support its sunflower processing and storage. In 1961, Lyng’s further expanded its business when it launched its Pet and Garden Center, carrying a selection of household pets, pet supplies, and garden supplies! Following Richard Lyng’s departure from the family business, Larry Arnese took over as head of the Ed J. Lyng Company followed by Deryl Bondshu. The company was sold to Northrup King Co. in 1971, and by the late 1980’s, the company’s locations in Modesto and Patterson became subsidiar-
ies of Trinidad Benham, and national dry ingredients supplier. While the Ed J. Lyng Warehouse at 610 N. 9th Street now showcases Modesto’s cruising legacy for all who visit, the building itself embodies the family business that grew to have regional, national, and even international reach in the agricultural economy. Repurposed buildings provide the community with new social and cultural resources while highlighting and acknowledging the built environment and history that occupied the space before. So in celebrating Modesto’s claim to the lived experience behind American Graffiti at the Graffiti USA Museum, we too can celebrate and appreciate a legacy of family entrepreneurs, agricultural heritage, and public service when visiting the historic Ed J. Lyng Building.

Noche de Cultura
Our community is better when we celebrate the many cultures that make us who we are. From our food, to our music and the arts, Modesto is rich in variety. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 – October 15, we recognize some of the many contributions this community has made to today’s Modesto. From Mexican Independence Day to Low Rider Holiday and new films showcasing local Mexican Music, there is so much to discover and enjoy.

I’m a fan of a lot of different foods and
I like a lot of different dining experiences. But if you REALLY want to know about your meal, there is no better hang out than Tye Bauer. There have been some nights where we just eat what he makes, and others we have to try something special. But the best seat at the house is around the bar in in the small kitchen that amazingly delivers some real variety, cooked in ways you didn’t think about. I am a fan of any of the Bauhaus Wellingtons. A vegan pastry filled with cream mushroom fillings and beef, (sometimes salmon or lamb), is just the perfect thing. The preparation of meats and proteins is truly special. But there is so much more. Long ago, tucked behind Vierra’s, was Bauers 66 ½. Food that wowed, came out of this micro kitchen and restaurant. Soon everyone knew as Guy Fieri featured him in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The word was out. Soon Tye opened Bauers downtown, where he took the smoker head on. Soon he was opening Bauhaus in a small space at the conversion of Scenic and Downey. It is like a teaching and story hour at Bauhaus. Admittedly, I am not one of his super-regulars, but I have been through my share of culinary tours at the bar, augmented by his house made Sangrias and well-curated music mix.

The Bauhaus 209 Exper
Fast forward, he sold downtown Bauers and has been focusing on Bauhaus for the past few years. Every day is a different experience. Tye loves experimenting with seafood like octopus, tuna, lobster, salmon, whole fish, tinned fish with many treatments from Korea, Portugal, Spain to Central American bringing it home to American smoked meats. Tye grew up in mixed cultures and spent years watching TV, traveling, living and cooking in Spain that really set the tone. He has competed on Guy Fieri’s Grocery Games and regularly cooks in Costa Rica and local festivals. When his pastrami is on the menu, it’s an essential visit. But best of all, many small plates, most sharable and designed for conversation. You will learn something every time. Tye wants to make dishes you may already know, feel like home again what he calls the “Ratatouille effect”. (You need to see the movie). The art of dinner service is a ballet in this small kitchen. Alongside Tye is Maera Faulkner who has been working with Tye since the Bauers 66 ½ days and her inspiration and guidance is present at Bauhaus and they know how to make this space work. Cast iron mini pans are the tools of the meal using high-heat convection ovens. Appetizers are life at Bauhaus. If you are looking to start easy, the Garlic Brie Bomb is perfect, along with a Low ABV Negroni Spritz and add a Sausage and Lin-

guica sampler with 3 different mustards. I always start with a house Sangria. Ease into it and get to know the menu or check out the specials. You can get vegan and GF options and venture into the Gambas or the Pork Belly, with kimchi topped with egg or a Portuguese inspired cabbage salad with peanut sauce and chile crunch. You can keep it simple with a summer salad and some whipped feta.
@bauhaus209
A note of caution, these small plates are tasty and sharable and are part of the fun, but you need to make sure that you save room for dessert. If you even like peanut butter a little bit, the PB&J Bomb is essential. Cap it off with a French press coffee and you have an magical locally-sources culinary tour. Bottom line, you can enjoy one of Modesto’s best food explorations weather you are there with friends, date night or alone. Tye will paint a picture and cook his way there. Also, be on the look out for his private dining Sardine room for parties and special events.

Johnny Garcia IEW
Modesto is a lucky community
by Chris Murphy
We have riches of talent, agriculture,
history, authenticity and cultures. Many cultures. That’s the spice of life and when we embrace the world around us and bring it all together, we have something amazing. There is so much more to Modesto than most people see. There are neighborhoods of different cultures and tastes, and the more we mingle, the better we get. It takes work and it takes the desire to connect diverse neighborhoods and people. People and businesses get into territorial and economic habits, but its better when we all cross the boundaries, real or imagined. One of the organizations that is really shaking things up and getting people and businesses to mix and mingle is the Stanislaus Latino Chamber of Commerce. It’s not just for Latino businesses, but more a way for businesses of all kinds to network and also intentionally, bridge the gap between Latino and Non-Latino communities of Modesto and Stanislaus County. Lead by dynamic CEO/President and 2026, CEO of the year, from the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, Johnny Garcia. Co-owner of Got It All Insurance as well, is leading the chamber to connect across the county, with other chambers, and networking businesses of all types across our Tri-County region. In fact, our company Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group has just joined the SLCC to better connect across our community. Next time you go out, try shopping or doing business in a new part of town and experience the richness of the Latino business community. Let’s get to know Johnny.
14
ModestoView: How did you get connected and started with the SLCC? Johnny Garcia: That’s a long story, but I was involved with another chamber and our CEO at that time approached me about joining the board of, the then, Central Valley Hispanic Chamber. From there, I stayed and just fell in love with connecting and helping others. Fast forward, a few years later became the CEO. MV: Do you find that our local business communities need more connection? JG: I feel that all businesses always need to connect with each other. We all need to support each other always.
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
MV: What are some of the key accomplishments of the Latino Chamber over the recent year? JG: SLCC has had many accomplishments, but the top 3 would have to be, having our first ever Youth Chamber Graduation, taking over the Modesto 4th of July parade, to getting Chamber of the Year for the whole state of California, with the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. These are just a few of the top accomplishments. MV: What do you think is the key to get our businesses across town to actually network? JG: We believe that creating a welcoming, genuine environment, will encourage all to come together to network and support one another.
MV: Do you think there is a misconception about the SLCC that people should understand? JG: Absolutely, people think we are only here to help Latinos, have to be Latino, and have to speak Spanish. This is far from the truth. Our goal is to bridge the gap between Latinos and non-Latinos. We are “A Chamber for Everyone” MV: What ways will a company benefit by being a member of the SLCC? JG: There are many ways businesses can benefit from us. A few are, we are county wide chamber with relationships up and down the state of CA. We have brought together a Tri County Mixer with Merced and San Joaquin Hispanic chambers, extending the company’s reach. We host FREE

trainings every month across our County. We always have something going on for Companies, their employees and clientele to take advantage of. MV: As an insurance provider, do you see the need for these services increasing in our community? JG: Absolutely, the more information we educate ourselves and connections we make, allow us to better survive during any tough times. MV: What is the biggest opportunity facing the Modesto business community? JG: I believe that Modesto has so many opportunities and organizations that want to help our community out. We have great people all around wanting to make a difference, including non-profits, Fire, Police, and even Government. MV: The SLCC is stepping into big shoes hosting the Modesto 4th of July Parade, how do you feel with this responsibility? JG: We definitely are stepping into big shoes. The Modesto Kiwanis has done a wonderful job these past 16 years. We feel many emotions, excited, proud, nervous, encouraged. But, I believe we have such an awesome team from our Board members, to Ambassadors, Committee members, and our strong connections of Volunteers MV: What do you think makes Modesto and the Stanislaus County area special? JG: I always tell everyone I speak to how unique our City and County are. We have FOLLOW US:

MV: You have a family here, what do we need to do to make sure that our next generations will be able to return to our community and thrive? JG: We need to remember that we all need to do our part to continue to make our community better. We need to intentionally invest in our youth. That is one reason we started our multi year long Youth Chamber Program. If everyone picked up a piece of trash outside, we would never have liter. MV: Describe your ideal day? JG: My ideal day would be getting to see the faces of people that we are helping support in one of our many events, getting to do this with my wonderful Wife, Son, Daughter and loved ones. Then ending the day with my family relaxing and spending quality time together. Follow the View Crew on Threads @modestoview

Events that Change Modesto
BIG VIEW
By Chris Murphy and Abigail Power
We recently had a gathering of local story tellers, journalists
and bloggers and one of the recurring themes that make Modesto great is our wealth and support of our volunteer network. It is amazing that a community of our size has so much available. Why? It’s largely in part to our volunteer and donor network. What other city has a multiple performing arts centers, museums, theatre companies, an opera, ballet, symphony, a 100+ year old summer concert band tradition, poetry houses, art companies and more? We also have food banks, and large-scale service that assist those in need, in transition of jobs and homes and those unhoused. It’s not just grants and public funds that keep this all going, it’s the volunteers that make Modesto happen. Public funds and grants are being cancelled left and right, which is wrong or at best misdirected. However, the people that need help are still there. There are those suffering from Alzheimers, cancer, mental illness, victims of human trafficking that need help, or kids in scouting looking to make a difference and thanks to volunteers and donations, these services are available. Thank you Modesto and our surrounding communities. This month there are great ways for you to help and one of these is one of the greatest community meals, anywhere. Let’s see what’s going on and how you can help.
Do you love a good gourmet brunch?
Want a real first-class brunch you would find at the fanciest resort? How would you like made to order omelets, custom crepes, hearty egg and bacon breakfasts, fruits and specialty bakery teams, beef and chicken fajitas and even shrimp cocktails, Bloody Marys and mimosas? How would you like to support five of Modesto’s great non-profits?
16
Edible Extravaganza
From a giant community brunch, we transition to a night of appetizers prepared by Modesto’s best restaurants. If you have ever doubted the quality of cuisine in our community, you need to attend the Edible Extravaganza at the Modesto Center Plaza. This is a tasty FUNdraiser for the Center for Human Services, that is a non-profit organization that provides mental health counseling, substance use treatment, family support, and emergency shelter services for youth and families throughout Stanislaus County.
Thanks to Dan and Denise Costa Family, the Community Brunch
brings all of this together for first class brunch served by hundreds of volunteers under the guidance of Modesto’s great chefs. There are two seatings and you will get to enjoy all of these treats for a good cause. Where else can you help all of these groups at the same time. First responders are served at 8 am and the public will be welcomed at 9 am through 2 pm. There are many silent auctions to further assist these organizations and sponsorships are encouraged. This event will directly support The Salvation Army, Without Permission, The Stanislaus Police Action League, Stanislaus Education Foundation and Society for disAbilities. Buy your tix today and make sure you get your colleagues, friends and clubs together to support the Community Brunch. This is an all hands on deck event that brings our community together for wonderful food and community spirit. Rock for Alzheimer’s
Many of us in our community have experienced the ravages of Alzheimers, our family included. Cures have escaped decades of research but the medical community pushes on, with the occasional break through that gives hope. Until that cure is there, support groups and coping systems are available and help guide the research fundraising and community outreach. Long-time Modesto music fan David Graybeal has championed Unforgettable, an annual concert for a cure at the State Theatre, honoring is wife “Magic Maggie” as she battles this disease. They are out in the community, supporting our local musicians and this time the musicians are giving back with a fundraiser featuring the Vibes, Triple D, and the Rattlesnakes on September 18, live at the State Theatre. Making Strides for Cancer
Cancer research is one of the most vexing issues as there are so many varieties and impacts of cancer. Breast cancer is key issue and inspection, care and treatment are so critical for catching it before it spreads to far. Keys are awareness and quick action as well as the continued push for research funding to stop this and other cancers. There are some new potential mRNA vaccines in the works, but early awareness is the most important way you can fight cancer. There are a couple of ways you can support this important work.

The Modesto Center Plaza is open for business. There was doubt and confusion during the conversation about the Downtown Modesto Stadium. Since that’s not happening, the Center Plaza remains open for business, operated by the Doubletree Hotel. If you are looking for meeting rooms, large convention spaces, event spaces for your company or organization, or know of groups looking to book a conventions, direct them to the DoubleTree and book this year and the years coming. Modesto USA can be the next home of cool indie film. Are we experiencing the work of the next Richard Bare or George Lucas? See what’s happening this month.
It’s time to celebrate student film!
Can we sell out the State Theatre? A mild-mannered family man and staunch supporter of Robert Kennedy Jr, Alex Strong is tasked by a mysterious agency with stopping evildoers from putting fluoride in his town’s water supply; pushing him into a surreal web of conspiracies where the fate of America, and the world is at stake. Directed by local filmmaker and winner of the 48-Hour Film Festival, Hakeem Pierstorff presents his first fulllength film. Starring: Ryan Rosenow, Paul Azevedo, Aidan Cook, Bill Anelli with Producers: Good Neighbor Productions. Hakeem explains, “I wanted to make a movie that encapsulates the feeling of living in this crazy era of American politics where we have the strangest characters sailing this sinking ship that we’re all trapped on board with. There’s so much happening that’s ripe for satarization so AGENT: STRONG came from a place of wanting to make a

Many people have learned about opera from either Amadeus or Bugs Bunny. The epic Barber of Saville cartoon is one of the all-time great shorts ever. Seriously, opera fans around the world have lauded Giacomo Rosinni’s Barber of Saville. Our local opera company, Opera Modesto, will be presenting this famous piece. Over the last few months, you have seen some great local promotions, even at the Graffiti USA Museum. If you have never been to an opera, this is one to see. If you are a regular, you know how good this is with memorable arias and the famous Largo al Factotum, breathtaking bel canto music and a delightful blend of romance with hijinks and humor. The effervescent music of The Barber of Seville remains a perennial favorite for audiences of all ages. Grammy Award-winning baritone Gabriel Manro sings the lead role of Figaro. Let it Go, Let it Go! There probably isn’t a human alive that has not heard these words sung by Elsa in Disney’s Frozen. This and the other songs by Elsa were voiced by Idina Menzel, notably mispronounced by John Travolta, before she performed the Oscar winning song. The Tony-winning Menzel is so much more than Frozen as she has starred in Wicked, Enchanted, Glee, Uncut Gems, Rent and many more. She will bring her hit songs and stories to the Gallo Center for the season opening gala weekend September 19. www.galloarts.org Check out the exclusive interview with Idina Menzel by our All-Ages writer Quinn Rogers on page 26 and the long version at www.modestoview.com The magic vocals of Art Garfunkel will return to the Gallo stage with a great tour of

collage, or make some other form of visual (hangable) art? There’s a competition for you! Bookish is thrilled to announce a new “artventure” for area artists: the 24-Hour Art Competition. Maybe you’ve heard of 24-Hour Plays or the 48-Hour Film Festival? Both of those are time-sensitive competitions with specific parameters: in the Modesto 48-hour film competition, for example, participants are given a genre, a prop, and a line of dialogue to incorporate into the script. With support from the Modesto Artists Movement, Bookish is taking a similar idea to our visual arts community with the 24-Hour Art Competition, and we couldn’t be more excited. Here’s what you need to know: - Artists in all visual mediums who are over 18 and currently live in the 209 area are eligible to participate. Artists must certify that their work is human-generated without the assistance of artificial intelligence. - There is a $10 entry fee, and the competition is limited to 50 participants. The fee goes toward a prize award for the top three adjudicated pieces. - The competition itself will take place from October 2 to 3 Meet Bookish on October 2 at 5:30 pm to receive instructions for the
contest and will have until 6pm on October 3 to deliver their artwork to the store where artists must certify that their competition entry was created entirely within the allotted 24-hour time frame. - Members of the local art community will judge ten finalists at an art reception on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:30pm. Judging will be blind, with the artists’ names hidden. Ten finalists will have their work displayed on the Bookish art wall. - During October, community members can visit Bookish and vote on their favorite pieces, one vote per person. The top three winners will be announced on November 2. - Following the competition, the finalists’ artwork will be displayed in the gallery space at the Stanislaus Arts Council through December 4. Since Bookish opened in 2024, local artists are featured on their art wall wall that rotates monthly between local artists. Some beloved Modesto art institutions, like The Mistlin Gallery and The Chartreuse Muse have closed, and they want to provide local artists another venue for creative expression. It’s great to see local art at local coffee shops, Graffiti USA Museum, Kruse Lucas and other new spaces. How to sign up. Beginning September 1, artists can purchase an entry ticket to compete at www.bookishmodesto.com/ events. Community members can sponsor an artist or contribute toward prize money for the winning entries. Learn more at @ bookish_modesto

An Interview with Idina Menzel by Quinn Rogers
This past week, I got to interview one of
Broadway’s biggest stars, Idina Menzel. It was a humongous opportunity, and I’m so, so glad I got to do this (thank you Cortney and Gallo Center!). She was so open and willing to answer all of my questions. Here are some of my favorite parts of our conversation. If you want to see the whole interview, please check out this interview at www.modestoview.com Quinn: Have you ever been to Modesto before? Idina: Yes, in 2012. How old were you? Quinn: I wasn’t even born yet. Quinn: You’ve played a lot of characters that young people really connect with. Is there one who taught you something about yourself? Idina: When I was playing Elphaba in Wicked, I had a lot of insecurities about playing the role and doing a good job. I think she had the same feelings and often felt like an outcast. So I had to find my power just like Elphaba found her power. Quinn: Do you ever get tired of singing “Let It Go”? Idina: Nope! I don’t. I get to sing it year after year, country after country, state after state, and I get to see the effect that it has on young people. It brings me a lot of joy. Quinn: I’m 13. What were you like when you were my age?
Idina: I had this really bad haircut! It was kind of short and shaved on one side and then a bob on the other side. A lot of the boys made fun of me that year. I didn’t really like school as much, but I loved doing plays in school. When I hit 15, I started pretending I was older and getting hired to sing at weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs. Quinn: I just had my Bat Mitzvah. Idina: You did!? How’d it go? Were you nervous? Quinn: I was so nervous because all my friends were watching me. Idina: I know. It’s a lot of pressure, isn’t it? Quinn: It was. What would you want people in Modesto to know about you? Idina: I strive to make every show completely different. I try to stay in the moment and be spontaneous. I actually like mistakes sometimes because I feel like they make me closer to the audience. Quinn: You’re so talented. Is there anything you’re bad at? Idina: Yes, a million things! I’m bad at playing guitar. I’m bad at being organized. I’m bad at not annoying my son.

Opening the Door What’s your favorite moment of the day? Mine is simple: Opening the door in the morning! When I do so, the first birdsong I hear, in a series of intensely hoarse, upward-inflected squawks, is this: “tchur… tchurr-tchurr-tchurr...” Stepping out, I see several red-headed woodpeckers have landed on the neighbor’s ash tree, their striking, vivid red crowns and black and white plumage flashing in the morning sun. Then, in a wildly variegated melody of “chacker-chacker-chacker…”, I hear the neighborhood’s social club, with the ululating sound of “wheee-uuu” thrown into the mix. The starlings are awake. A glorious cacophony arising like a symphony, all from opening the door... It seems life often presents these choices of doors being opened or staying closed. If closed, routines can start to become embedded. We all have our own version of it. In my case, that would look like me sitting in my living room and reading the next mystery or crime thriller. For others, it will almost certainly look different, but the theme
By Chris Condon
is the repetition of the same. Such repetition is nothing bad in and of itself, but if it dominates, it can stagnate. The door stays closed. So how to open up and break the routine? This morning, after recalling those birds outside my door, I think of the Paul McCartney tune, “Let ‘Em In”. Tracking it down on iTunes, soon I am listening (dancing, really, in my mind) as McCartney sings, “Someone knockin’ at your door/ Somebody ringin’ the bell…” I can’t imagine just hanging out and leaving the door closed, not while he is singing of letting in friends, neighbors, the world outside: “Do me a favour/ Open the door and let ‘em in, ooh yeah.” In next month’s Zen View column, I’ll be opening the door, so to say, to a preview of a new kind of performance of ancient Chinese martial arts and Persian music that is happening on Friday evening, October 23rd, at Modesto’s State Theater. Curious to know more? Check out the Special Event in the Calendar section of Modesto’s T’ai Chi Ch’uan Academy: www.taichi4modesto.com 209-572-4518 Stay tuned! More to come next month!
WE ARE HERE FOR YOU t onouwtople en at 701 K Street (downtown)
Quinn: Who is your favorite person you’ve ever worked with? Idina: I think Adam Sandler is one of them.
