Friends, here we are in Rocktober. This is our favorite month of the year. The seasons are turning from our hot summer, we are getting the fall and harvest smells in the air, the soups and the butternut squash are returning to local restaurant menus, the evening air is crisp and breezy with a dinner on a downtown patio, or even your own patio. This is just the ticket to a great evening, paired up with your favorite beverage. It’s not quite sweater weather, but you can feel it coming. October is also perfect as it literally ends on a Saturday with Halloween Trick-or-Treating where I confess, we go a bit over the top. In this issue, we have compiled some of our haunted and harvest happenings in this issue and hope you can check them out. The other thing that makes Rocktober special is the 27th annual Modesto Area Music Association, (MAMA) Awards. Since Chris Ricci and I founded the MAMAs in 2000, we have celebrated the amazing musical talent, the bands, the musicians, the singer songwriters, the venues and the events that make Modesto a special musical city. Despite not having a large dedicated venue to live music at the moment (we miss the Fat Cat and Hero’s) many smaller venues have stepped up and we take a special night to celebrate them. Voting is live now and ends at 11:59 October 18. Winners will be announced live from the State Theatre and we will celebrate local rock legend Jim Burgett, the Modesto area’s first rocker. This will be a special night and it will be streamed live @modestoview Our Modesto Area Music and SKA encyclopedia Middagh Goodwin has been in the hospital. He is now home and recovering and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Wouldn’t it be cool if Modesto had a small festival area in downtown to host things like Modesto on Ice, roller skating, harvest festival, music festivals, pumpkin patches, St. Patrick’s Fest (Luckyfest?), Dia de Los Muertos and more? We use the 10th St Plaza regularly, but what if we used the Modesto on Ice location all year long for different events like roller skating, or hopefully, a space like this will be included in the upcoming courthouse redevelopment. One thing is for sure, is Modesto needs gathering spaces that are easy to host events, for both the presenters, guests and the city responsible teams and MPD. Our downtown needs to be a showcase, loaded with activities, events, concerts, art walks and it all needs to work together so more people join in. Thanks to Brad Hawn, Brian Gini and Todd Aaronson for bringing the new lighting project to 10th and J Streets. After a long and dragged-out approval process, completion is nearing and this overhead chandelier will look great for Rockin’ Holiday. Creativity doesn’t have to be expensive. Everything we do should have an element of innovative design, or technology. Even a simple sidewalk can have mosaics pressed or benches that look like art. Having spent last week in Lisbon Portugal, you see small regular things that have been extra thought out with both utility and design. Friends, we all need to be storytellers. We all need to be sharing the good things in our community. Most communities have the same challenges and we need to address those. BUT, we MUST celebrate what makes us better and different, so that when some national statistic company

Sierra Pacific Team is supporting Salvation Army at the Golf Tournament with Harrison Power, Birdie Rodriguez, Morningstar’s Bob Henry ranks us, they see the music, the food, the fun, the vibrancy and what makes us different, from Graffiti USA to the Gallo Center and our Low Riders. Modesto is the best thing going in the central valley and we need to say so. I hope you all do your part in sharing and posting the good and amplify each other’s messages. ModestoView is FREE to our readers, thanks to our advertisers and sponsors and feel free to use and share our articles and pictures to spread the good word. In Memoriam - Lloyd Ploutz by Chris Murphy

Few people I have ever met were like Lloyd Ploutz. I was introduced to Lloyd in the early 80s when I stated dating my now wife, Rececca McNulty. Larger than life, many stories to tell, Ex Noble Grand Humbug Clamper, Legend of the Cruise, historian, contractor, realtor and expert at pretty much everything, Lloyd was part of the McNulty family and then mine. He helped us buy our first Modesto house when we returned in 1996. Always a heavy pour bartender, with stories so incredible that you would think that they must be true. Lloyd wrote many HistoryView articles over the years and is local and historical knowledge was encyclopedic. One day, I called to ask a simple question and he replied he was in Malta for business. You can only wonder. Lloyd leaves behind his wife Polly, many friends and family and will be missed.

Keep the Change

MAMA VIEW

by Chris Murphy

Let’s get ready to celebrate Jim Burgett

by Mattéa Overstreet

Hello all! I hope autumn is greeting you with cozy open arms.

Last month, I invited readers to write something with me. You sent in beautiful thoughts, notes, and snippets of ideas. Your contributions were thoughtful and moving. You all told different stories, but I felt themes of gratitude, grief, and existence weaving through it all. This is what we made together.

KEEP THE CHANGE

Love is a choice. Be good, and if you can’t be good, be careful. You can’t take it with you, but if you’re lucky, you can keep the change. A wood cross necklace made in China, a scientist swears his brother carved for him. A father at a dance party while someone searches for him, afraid he has fallen. A daughter sleeping in my arms. Pouring my troubles out like water. I want to say the hard truth. I want to say I’m sorry. I want to love again. Truth has very few friends, but love, trust, and humor are too strong for the thief. There are things we cannot take with us. And things we leave behind. And somewhere beneath the bleached white sky, after all the leaving, after all the losing ,we find ourselves. Finally home. Thank you Alison, Chrissy, Blanco, Salvatore, Kyna, and others for joining me in this creative experiment! We’ll do it again.

HELPING VIEW

Comfort Kits are needed.

It’s the time of year where Love Modesto, Love Stanislaus and Love our Kids are collecting for their annual drive to be ready before the Christmas and December holidays. You can donate individual items, complete kits, you can volunteer and you can share this news so that our community comes together to help those in need. It’s easy to do and the reward is great. Donations are happening now for distribution on December 5. www.lovestanislauscounty.org/comfort-kit-drive

In 2000, the Modesto Area Music Awards began to celebrate the amazing musical talent we have in our area. Over the years, we have had ups and downs, new venues, closing venues, big festivals like X Fest that are no longer to ModStock that showcase the brand new bands to the pro rockers. Our musicians are featured at the local Modesto Roadsters games and thanks to the many cafes, coffee houses and restaurants, the bands have places to play and develop. Now in 2027, we are still pushing for more venues, inspiring more collaboration with the Modesto Arts Movement, MoFolk, VMI, G&K, Modesto Artists and Musicians and many more. It’s all about promoting our scene and each other so bands get heard beyond Modesto. On October 20, 2027, we celebrate the 27th Annual Modesto Area Music Awards. This year, in addition to the regular awards, we are celebrating and recognizing Modesto’s first rocker, Jim Burgett. In the mid 1950s, rock and roll was bubbling in Modesto. With KBOX & KFIV on the airwaves, Kent Whitt and the Downbeats were rockin’ out of Modesto High with Merced’s Roddy Jackson, also with the Blue Notes. But before them, there was Jim Burgett. Jim Burgett was 12 years old when he got the music bug. A door to door salesman stopped by his Ceres home selling guitar lessons. Born in New Mexico, Jim came to Ceres as a third grader. Even though he learned to play guitar in grade school, he played football and didn’t really get into music until 1952. After graduation from Ceres High in 1953, he worked with his dad in plumbing, loading cans on railcars and in auto garage in Modesto. After spending some time in Lake Tahoe, he became interested in presenting concerts and dances, learning from local radio and music legend Chester Smith and decided to make a music and promotions business in Modesto. He started his own band with Ceres High friends, Robert Fox and Clark Hensley. But

they couldn’t find any gigs, so they decided to create their own. Jim began booking dances at Yori’s Grove in Ceres. He was running dances for Chester Smith in Walnut Creek and his own at Yori’s and the crowds started growing. Soon his shows in Walnut Creek got so popular, even Bill Graham came to check it out. He started booking the South Shore American Legion Hall in Tahoe during the week and Yori’s on the weekends. Eventually he started working Tahoe all week long and soon his band was playing rockabilly at the hall at night and then on the glitzy stage at Harrah’s in the mornings and they caught on. They were working hard, but Jim loved it. Between booking and playing shows in Tahoe, Jim built a recording studio in Modesto and in 1960 recorded “Live It Up” and “I Believe in You” with His Make-Believers on the Oro Label to open up the 60s with local rockabilly and rock n roll. Gary Grubb (Duncan) recorded at Jim’s studio. Jim helped Gary assemble and promote the RATZ, who would open for the Byrds and the Stones, later forming Quicksilver Messenger Service. Jim would later record in Bakersfield, get an MGM contract thanks to Wayne Newton. Throughout the 60s, Jim would build the business at the Legion Hall, bringing in the up and comers in the 60s, including the Grateful Dead, Guess Who, Steppenwolf and the who’s-who’s of the generation. In Tahoe, you also had the Wilder Brothers and Frank Sinatra influence that would help propel Jim in the future. Jim toured through into the 70s and would soon add a female singer, who would become his second wife Marlene Ricci. They relocated to Las Vegas and thanks to Jim, she was discovered by Frank Sinatra. She would soon open for Frank on his tours and she became a Vegas fixture. She had her own career with world tours, Top 40 hits and TV specials. Today, they live in Las Vegas and still occasionally perform. Let’s get ready to celebrate Jim Burgett.

HISTORY VIEW Hotel Hughson

IN MEMORIAM

Remembering Robert Merritt

By Harrison Power @historyharrison

*Historic photographs shared courtesy of the McHenry Museum and Historical Society The intersection of 10th and J Streets today is integral to downtown life in Modesto, thanks in large part to the efforts of early developers and visionaries over 110 years ago. While Charles Murray and W. A. Jones sought to build at the intersection to establish a “New Center” of Downtown, it was a different influential property owner who truly cemented 10th and J as pivotal to local residents and travellers alike: Luella Rosalie Avery Hughson. Where the expansive City-County Administration Building stands now was once home to one of crown jewels of Modesto hostelry: the Hotel Hughson. Considered to be Modesto’s first “skyscraper” as it was three floors taller than any other building in the city, the Hotel Hughson when it opened in March 1914 was revered as one of the finest and well-appointed hotels in the Valley and beyond. Luella Hughson (1841-1951) was the widow of Stanislaus pioneer Hiram Hughson, one of the wealthiest men in the San Joaquin Valley at the time of his passing and namesake of the town of Hughson, California. Following her husband’s passing in 1911, Luella Hughson remained in Modesto and continued to oversee the Hughson estate’s holdings and financials. She purchased the parcels at the northeast corner of 10th and J Streets in 1913 to follow through on her late husband’s dreams of a grand investment in Modesto and monument to the Hughson name, which ultimately came to fruition as the Hotel Hughson under Luella Hughson’s direction and planning. The Hotel Hughson was designed by Bernard J. Joseph of San Francisco, the notable architect who also designed the Modesto Arch over I Street and Cressey Manor on 17th Street, with construction overseen by Contractor Ernest G. Green. Originally designed to be five floors plus basement, plans for the steel-frame hotel were updated to add another floor just one month following Luella’s announcement of FOLLOW US:

the project, making the hotel the tallest and largest building in Modesto. The facade was finished in white sandstone brick, and the interiors whether for guest accommodation or amenity were adorned with the finest finishes and materials. The well-appointed 120-room hotel provided nearly any convenience or luxury for the era, with a ballroom and dressing rooms on the sixth floor, and in the basement were housed a gentleman’s grill, swimming pool, and showers. Several sample rooms were included in the design as well, to accommodate traveling salesmen and their wares. The ground floor provided a large entry lobby with bar, barbershop, and stores, along with the main dining room crowned with a musicians’ balcony. Atop the hotel was a rooftop garden for added leisure space. Completed at an estimated cost of nearly $100,000 excluding the furnishings, a grand opening banquet and dance hosted by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce took place on the evening of March 4, 1914, lasting into the early hours of the morning with music provided by both Murphy’s Orchestra and a Hawaiian singing and dancing troupe. The Hotel Hughson served as the backdrop and host to decades of cherished memories made by diners, patrons, visitors, and residents of the hotel, but the Hughson’s era of opulence and grandeur gradually yielded over time to a state of deterioration and disrepair, and it was in 1979 that the hotel was ordered to be vacated following determinations by building, fire, and health officials that the building was no longer fit for occupancy due to safety conditions following a series of fires. A fire in August 1978 revealed that the hotel’s structure contained no fire stops inside the walls, floors, or ceilings, heightening officials’ concerns for a potential disastrous fire event if the building was not reinforced and repaired. While different attempts were made by various investors, the Hotel Hughson was ultimately acquired by the City Follow the View Crew on Threads @modestoview

By Ben Balsbaugh Robert Merritt was a true Modesto original. Born and raised here, Robert was an artist, a musician, a craftsman, a husband, a father, a son, a brother and a dear friend to so many. Those that knew him, also know his faith was at the center of his life. Creativity was simply part of who Robert was. Music was a huge part of his life, and he was an incredibly talented musician who, years ago, served as the lead singer and bass player for the progressive funk rock band Triple Wisdom. He was also an accomplished contemporary oil painter, with his work displayed in galleries, offices and restaurants throughout the West Coast. His creativity seemed to have no boundaries. He even became an avid knife and watch maker. But as talented as Robert was, those who knew him will remember him most for the way he made people feel. Whenever you saw Robert, he had a way of making you feel like you were the person he was most excited to see. He was funny, he loved people, and he could light up a room the moment he walked into it. Life was simply a little more fun when Robert was around. Robert deeply loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Ginny Merritt (Conrad), and their children, Daniel and Liam; his parents, Robert and Vivian (Martino) Merritt; and his siblings, April (Jeff) Duarte, Nicholas Merritt and Vito Merritt. Robert leaves behind his art, his music and countless memories, but his greatest legacy may be the joy, laughter, love and friendship he gave so freely to others. Modesto lost one of its creative souls, and those of us fortunate enough to call Robert our friend lost someone we will never forget.

Robert was larger than life: his smile, his attitude, his music,

his art, his rapid fire creativity, his talent, his family and friends. One of my favorite Modesto memories was Robert rockin’ at X Fest with Triple Wisdom, surrounded by dancers and fans and he was the embodiment of rock and roll star and one of the most electrical moments in Modesto music.

Robert will always be a star.

and County to make way for the new joint administration building, and was demolished in 1998. Of note was that out of the 1,836 entries submitted to propose a name for the new administration complex, the “Luella R. Hughson Building” was among the top 40 options. While the Hotel Hughson is gone, the spirit of innovation and thankfulness to Modesto exhibited by Luella Hughson’s hotel is alive still at the corner of 10th and J, where community partners have worked to achieve and construct a bold new civic lighting project, which will illuminate not just the streets and sidewalks below but will shine as a beacon of the strength and promise of what lies ahead for Modesto.

You need some fun Modesto?

Then check out the Bus Stop Beer Garden that has been lovingly built and rolled out by Garret Vick. Garret is a 3rd generation beer man and his father Gary and his dad Les were all beer distributors. I digress a bit. I used to race bicycles with Garret’s father Gary. Back in the early 80s, cycling was not as cool, and we got Gary to sponsor our race team so we had Bud-Light jerseys, and then we could ride through the foothills in peace without getting stuff thrown at us. OK, back to Garrett. While earning his degree in economics at UC Santa Cruz, Garret was gifted an old school bus. Over the years, he worked out the idea to turn it into a mobile beer tap room, and has created an oasis at the corner of Tully and N 9th St. You can find many different refreshing beers and seltzers at the Bus Stop Beer Garden. You should try the School Bus Blonde. There are non-alcoholic options too. The oasis he created is equally fun with a variety of plant that are potted in many unusual containers, like a typewriter, printer, yard fertilizer, and many other oddities. He has handmade the tables from black walnut trees mounted to old school desks. This is truly a handmade labor of love that you should check out. The beer is good and cold and there is an adjacent food truck that will keep you fueled up. Now that it’s October, you will notice a winter shelter tent coming soon, similar to German Oktoberfest. Garret plans on operating through the winter and is working hard, making everything him self to create a fun and protected area with more benches and seating. Now, regarding the garden, you can actually purchase the plans and succulents. There is aloe, jade, desert rose and more all affordably prices. Garret is a member of the Modesto Garden Club.

SAFETY VIEW

by Chris Murphy

Well-lit and safe spaces are the most basic thing we need in our public spaces and downtowns. Modesto needs to make well-lit streets and sidewalks a #1 priority for downtown and areas with a lot of foot traffic. J Street should be brightly lit up all the way from 5 points to 9th. Safe smooth sidewalks are basic. This has been a need for decades. Let your council members that you think this needs to be done. We are getting a start with the new 10th and J Chandelier with 10th St lighting that was proposed by Brian Gini, Brad Hawn and Todd Aaronson of Visit Modesto back in 2023 to be completed in this month. And while we are at it, let’s bring back bicycle police patrols in downtown. is real and thanks to the Raven Perch, many are discovering the world of fantasy, medieval and other wise. This inviting and friendly space was created by Crystal Sweyd and her husband Jeff from a need to gather and escape from COVID. They started creating gathering groups, book clubs, craft workshops and soon these needed a place as they grew. Taking over the former Crow Trading space, the Ravens Perch is transformed into world of fantasy, reading, story hours, cat adoptions, author readings with mystical gifts and medieval hennins. There are books in their history as Jeff ’s father, Michael Sweyd owned McHenry Village books back in the day. The Ravens Perch welcomes all to their inclusive space, with a tree gated children’s section with space for story time, tables for crafting and meetings, comfy couches for reading and displays of gifts made by local artists. It is designed to be a community hub that’s a safe and inclusive space. There monthly schedule is quite busy and they offer events that bring groups together from Dungeons and Dragons, Mystery Book Blind Date, Adult Ballet, Drag Story Hour, poetry circles ,Twilight Trivia, and special girls’ night events. Some of these have a charge as outside people come in. Crystal is please how much it has grown and their following is getting bigger. At the core, it is a book store and supports local authors. and they are finding that their mystery books are gaining popularity. They are also showcasing general fiction, Victorian, romance, fantasy, horror, hot body horror, wizardry and other genres, all designed to try your imagination and pique your curiosity. Some customers come in for the books, or the art but regardless, find a welcoming creative space that inspires your brain. In October, there will be a Medieval Craft Faire on October 17 inside the store along J Street, 10-6pm Chris Garcia doing medieval flags, 3d magpie will have a build your dragon station, the horned harlot will be there with hennins, with other artists including crochet, chain mailer jewelry, marionettes and salt and silver will be making rings in house and kids jousting and adult jousting around 2-4pm with grand prizes. In November, they are working on Scrooge Fest, a Victorian market along J Street on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. They are working hard to get this together since Mod Shop or Domo Shop isn’t happening and they want to encourage downtown business and local crafters of all kinds. Save the date November 28.

comedy are taking over the Queen Bean! On Wednesday, October 14, from 7:30–9:30 p.m., our iconic Poetry Night & Haiku Battle returns. This is an open mic, which means anyone can step up and share an original poem. At the end of the night, $100 goes to the poem that makes the biggest impact. Then come the kazoos. Our Haiku Battle—affectionately known as Haikus & Kazoos—is a head-to-head competition where poets trade tiny, 17-syllable punches and the audience judges each round by the volume of their kazoo. At times, it feels like a miniature roast battle, but the wordplay can be incredible. The champion takes home $100. If you want to compete, come prepared with six to eight original haiku. Then, on Wednesday, October 28, the Poetry Slam returns to Queen Bean, 7:30-9:30pm. Slam is the competitive art of performance poetry: poets have three minutes to perform one original poem, and audience judges score them on both the writing and the performance.

But poetry isn’t the only writing taking center stage this month. Comedy is taking over Tuesday nights. Our Open Mic Comedy Nights return October 13 and 27, regularly featuring more than 20 comedians and crowds of 60–100 people. Comics travel from Fresno, Stockton, Sacramento and beyond to perform just four or five minutes on Queen Bean’s 116-year-old porch in downtown Modesto. (We are quietly becoming a genuine destination for comedy, with one of the most exciting open mics in the Valley!) And on October 6, “Freshly Ground” returns. This is a curated lineup of seasoned comedians performing only fresh, untested jokes . . . and your laughter or silence will determine if they ever use their jokes again! Whether you lean toward humor or have the heart of a poet, the goal is the same: write something. Share something. Tell your story. Modesto has so many voices worth hearing and at the Modesto Artists Movement, we are finding as many opportunities as we can to make sure they are heard.

BAR & FOOD VIEW

By the View Crew

TRESETTI’S MODESTO CLASSIC We all need places that are just a classic go-to. You know the place, you know the people, you know the menu, but there are always a few things that are new that make you want to keep coming back. Plus, centrally located and big enough for a group after a show or just for two on a date. A place that is good to see and be seen is also a bonus one of the busiest corners in downtown Modesto. At this point, you have to know we are talking about Tresetti’s. The ViewCrew has been known to enjoy happy hour here more than a few times. Sometimes a quiet sit at the bar is all you need, or if we need just enough time to get a drink, and an appetizer, or two, and share, then Tresetti’s is the ticket. The bar at Tresetti’s is a hallowed place with memories of decades of celebrations, parties, and quiet nights. This month, you can enjoy a new Holiday Mule! These are always refreshing and are a great add to your afternoon escape. The fresh fruitiness of it paired with the zesty lime is a perfect way to enjoy a rotating flavored mule cocktail. Then we tried the Pumpkin Espresso Martini which is a seasonal creamy delight - wonderful to enjoy before one of the magical fall events happening all over downtown this fall. Whether it’s enjoyed at the beginning of your adventure or as a final night cap, it’s a delicious treat to get in the seasonal spirit. Finally, we landed on the Sidecar. A classic, but a classic for good reason. Citrusy and spirit forward, sound like a local legend while ordering one to enjoy in a hall of fame focal point of a 100 year old building like the Beaty Building. There is always a dilemma at Tresetti’s. Which appetizer to get, is it the burrata with fruit, or is it the full clove of roasted garlic with brie, or is it the coconut shrimp or the crab cakes? These are really hard choices sometimes. We forget about the shrimp a lot and that’s a shame, and when we order, it’s always a winner. Our advice, let them recommend something for you, especially when they know what you are drinking. So when in doubt, we got all three. It’s wonderful to have so many options and this is a go-to spot that won’t disappoint. This month, make sure you check out the Celebrity Bartending Event hosted by Tresettis and Suzie Powers to raise money for the American Cancer Society and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Celebrity bartenders will feature Modesto Firefighters Association Local 1289, and ModestoView’s Chris Murphy and Citizen of the Year Brent Burnside, and music by Neil Buettner! Cocktails, local business, a life-saving cause, music and firefighters - what more could you ask for? See you there on October 15th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM! Tresetti’s is a wonderful and nice upscale dinner. We bring guests to town regularly for a nice meal and it’s always a winner. Our favorites are the Chicken Cordon Bleu and the Gumbo - but no matter what you order you will be full and happy by the end of the meal. Don’t forget Tresetti’s for a quick happy hour or even just a light meal. Sitting at the bar is always fun, and you can still go into the dining room if you want to extend your evening, or stay if friends show up. Who knows who you run into at a place like Tresetti’s where “everybody knows your naaaame.” Cheers! PINK VIEW

For Susan Powers, RN, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is much more than wearing pink. It is personal. Susan is a 14-year breast cancer survivor, registered nurse, and passionate advocate in our community. She has made it part of her purpose to educate and encourage women about preventative health, breast cancer screening, and the importance of early detection. Her journey with breast cancer began long before her own diagnosis. At just 25 years old, Susan lost her mother to an aggressive form of breast cancer. Despite staying diligent with preventative screenings and annual exams herself, Susan found herself facing the same frightening words at age 43: “You have cancer.” What followed were four major surgeries, four rounds of chemotherapy, reconstruction, and a journey that tested her physically and emotionally. Today, Susan proudly calls herself not only a survivor, but a champion for other women facing breast cancer. October holds an especially meaningful place in Susan’s heart. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but it is also her birthday month—another year older and, most importantly, another year of life. “Breast cancer can change many things about your body and your life, but it cannot take away the love you have for your family, your courage, your inner spirit, or your resilience to face each day with hope and faith.” This October, Susan is once again turning survivorship into service. On October 15, in partnership with Tresetti’s World Caffé, Susan will host a special Celebrity Bartending Night benefiting Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and a recipient from our local community. The evening will feature celebrity bartending with Chris Murphy and Modesto Firefighters Local 1289, along with music by Neil Buettner. It will be an evening of friendship, awareness, fundraising, and community—all with one goal: to pay it forward. Susan also invites the community to join her on October 25 at 9 a.m. at MJC West Campus for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Come walk for those currently fighting, celebrate those who have survived, and honor those whose lives have been lost. Breast cancer can enter anyone’s life, often in the middle of the most ordinary day. That is why Susan encourages women to know their bodies, follow recommended screening guidelines, talk with their healthcare FOLLOW US:

providers about their individual risk factors, and seek medical evaluation when something does not feel or look right. Susan hopes that by continuing to share her story, support research, and bring people together, we can move closer to a future where no family has to hear the words, “You have cancer.” Until then, we walk. We advocate. We support one another. And together, we make a difference.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.”

Jessica Coleman EW

by Chris Murphy

Jessica Coleman has always wanted to

make things beautiful and improve the lives of children. She founded the Color the Skies nonprofit organization in 2006, that began as the Color The Skies Hot Air Balloon Festival in Ripon. During this time, she served on the Board for the Valley Children’s Hospital and was instrumental in bringing the Valley Children’s Pelandale Specialty Care Center to Modesto. Over the years, Jessica created a Children’s Garden behind the Pelandale Center. Healthy living is really important, especially as she suffered a faulty heart valve in 2020 and through her recovery, worked on ways to expand this work. Recently the Children’s Garden relocated adjacent to St. Stanislaus Church on Maze Boulevard and has been developing rapidly and the kids involved are thriving and interested in growing the food they can eat. The mission of Children’s Garden is disease prevention through community, gardening and education. Married to Gallo’s Greg Coleman for the past 30 years, they have made giving to the community a key part of their lives, not just with resources, but with personal time and commitment. This project is a labor of love and a personal mission. They decided long ago that their personal philanthropic efforts would center on the well being of children. Recently they scored a historic piece of modernism art with the play statue that was relocated from Beard Brook park, preserving this history for the future. In addition, the Downtown Improvement District donated the Primrose Planter that was on the corner near the Gallo Arts Center to Children’s Garden so the families can enjoy it as well. Let’s meet Jessica.

ModestoView: Why are children’s programs so important? Jessica Coleman: What children learn during important formative years will play out for the rest of their lives. That’s exactly why I do what I do because I had unique experiences growing up in Idaho - camping, hunting, fishing and gardening. Also, it was expected that we help our family survive and thrive so I learned to work hard by cleaning houses with my mom and then doing cement jobs with my dad. I learned the concept of reaping and sowing during a very young age and throughout my childhood. At Children’s Garden kids have an opportunity to explore nature through gardening which is ultimately a fundamental part of lifelong health. I love the concept of Children’s Garden because it is a nourishing environment where our team of volunteers inspire confidence in families to take what they learn and expand or start their own gardens at home.

MV: One of your big projects was to bring the Children’s Hospital to Modesto, how did that focus your projects? JC: I was laser focused on letting the community know about Valley Children’s Hospital because moving to Modesto from Fresno, I was alarmed really that families did not know there was a world class pediatric hospital just an hour and a half south. Raising awareness and proceeds for Valley

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

Children’s Hospital by way of gorgeous hot air balloons, kites, skydivers and a jet show was the perfect way to get the word UP and out! I organized the balloon festival for years out of our home in Ripon and then decided it was taking too much from me personally to continue. When I retired from that project I was asked to help garner support for a new satellite center that was to open in 2019. The hospital leadership picked Modesto and 9 other cities based on the number of patients that they were seeing in those particular areas. That’s when I knew that all the years of raising awareness for Valley Children’s really paid off for the community. We did it together - all the volunteers, the sponsors, the loyal supporters, the balloonists - all of us brought specialized healthcare closer to home. MV: Color the Skies was beautiful, what impact did that have on our community? JC: I think the young people who were in elementary school and high school during those years had a tremendous experience helping the balloon festival come alive every Labor Day Weekend. They became part of something bigger than themselves and felt the importance of their efforts on their entire community. Hopefully they realized that positive change is attainable through hard work. The bitter pill to swallow was had we of had more people who were truly invested in keeping the balloon festival going, it would still be around today. Every

year we had the same die-hard volunteers and those people worked their fingers to the bone to make it happen. It simply was not sustainable. That is the biggest lesson I learned, you can build something fantastic, but it has to be sustainable. That’s what I’m trying to build into the fabric of Children’s Garden today. MV: You had to relocate the Children’s garden, how complicated was that? JC: Moving the garden wasn’t the hard part. The hard part was having to move after spending 5 years getting the garden behind the Pelandale Specialty Care Center dialed in. I had just spent a tremendous amount of money putting in electricity and walkways, which was inevitably left behind. Ultimately, I look at those 5 years as a pilot program - where I learned how to garden and tap into our community to build important relationships, like we now have with University of the Pacific and Master Gardeners of Stanislaus County. MV: How has the garden grown in the new location? JC: The new location has a constant flow of energy, traffic and attention. The best part - it’s located within walking distance of several schools, like St Stanislaus and Franklin Elementary, both of which attend programs at the garden. We just kicked off a Culinary Series with over sixty 3rd graders from Franklin Elementary School where

(and adults) love seeing their new friends, helping each other with planting and harvesting or simply filling up water buckets together. I love the fact that parents and children are learning together - and that they leave with a sense of nature-inspired awe, peace and hope.

University of the Pacific Clinical Nutrition Masters students lead the kids in making recipes while explaining the nutritional value of the ingredients. We’re able to show the kids how and where the produce is grown at the garden and they run around and enjoy the space during their visit. Also, corporations are bringing their employees to Children’s Garden for offsite team building experiences that include friendly competition and they end up helping with the projects we have on any given day. Of course, Gallo employees have been out and I’m forever grateful for this new location that they donated to my nonprofit! MV: What do you think kids enjoy most at the garden? JC: The kids are absolutely crazy about ‘Dino Bones’ the new play sculpture that was moved from Beard Brook Park! They play on it at every opportunity. It’s such a joy to watch, knowing that my own husband and his siblings, along with countless children in the community, grew up playing on it is truly nostalgic. Apart from playing, I think the real magic that gets the kids excited is eating delicious tasting food right off of a plant. We have an enormous amount of berries and grapes - we refer to that part of the garden as ‘Strawberry Lane’, where they run and stuff their mouths with sweet, ripe berries! They also love grabbing loads of fresh greens and making smoothies in the demonstration kitchen. The kids FOLLOW US:

MV: How did you score the historic and rare modernist play sculpture from Beard Brook? JC: It was actually a no brainer. The sculpture is so unique and really priceless to our community. To see it not being enjoyed was a shame. GALLO agreed that we could move the sculpture so it was just a matter of finding the dream team to make it happen. That team consisted of Michael Gaffney with Pacific Gas & Electric and Brian Gini, owner of Collin’s Electric, Ladd Crane Service and Frank Borba - and of course my husband, Greg! They had their best guys at Beard Brook on moving day with jack hammers, straps and heavy machinery. We had planned and planned and then came the day where they excavated ‘Dino Bones’, loaded it on a crane and proceeded to drive it down 9th Street in the middle of the day on a low boy trailer! We all had fingers (and toes) crossed and such a sense of excitement during the entire process! The story behind ‘Dino Bones’ and the history is just so special. It’s been a perfect location for this Modesto Landmark! MV: Since October can be a haunted month and we are featuring a renaissance cover and theme this month, your big fundraiser this month called Swords and Roses, tell us about that. JC: Swords & Roses has been postponed until 2027 due to unavoidable circumstance. However, that only means it will be that much better! This evening in costume fundraiser will be a nod to the middle ages; crowns, steins and all! A Medieval Dinner (animal style), axe throwing area, archery area, a costume contest (individual, couples and group awards) and unique entertainment! Saturday, October 9th will be SWORDS & ROSES 2027 at Children’s Garden in Modesto. Swords & Roses will be our signature event annually. MV: How do you see your next directions with this park? JC: Simply put sustainability, education and collaboration. We need more people with the appropriate knowledge and passion to get involved so we can grow and sustain our free programs for the community. Right now, we are working with Stanislaus County Master Gardeners leadership to develop a hands-on partnership to help with school fieldtrips, garden maintenance and continued education service hours for future SCMaster Gardeners. First 5 Stanislaus Follow the View Crew on Threads @modestoview

has made a major investment by developing space at the garden designed specifically for early childhood education. We hope to work with the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau - as I know they are very interested in making sure we have more youth in ag. MJC Ag Department has been involved by hosting classes at Children’s Garden for their students and providing quality candidates for summer internships. University of the Pacific will continue educating our youth in nutrition and hopefully have an army of young people from the garden, who will grow up and attend the new Medical School at UOP on the Stockton Campus! I’m certainly looking for more opportunities to work with the community - so if there’s anyone who may be interested just reach out. jessica@colortheskies.com MV: What else drives you in our community? JC: Honestly, I wish I could be more diverse in my passion, but our healthcare system is not working. Not in Modesto. Not in the United States. I think this will drive me more than anything else because having had to be an advocate for my own health and the health of a chronically ill child, I’ve had front row seats watching a community in distress. I won’t stop raising awareness about our healthcare problems, especially in Modesto, until we see our healthcare giants support and encourage preventative health. MV: If you had unlimited funds, what project would you take on? JC: I would hire more city parks and recreation workers and turn half of every park in Modesto into a garden and have the city pay for a portion of the maintenance. I know where they’ve actually done this and it works! MV: Describe your ideal day. JC: I would wake up knowing that my children are all healthy. The Niners would kick the Seachickens all over the field. My dad (deceased) would meet my husband and children and we would spend the night laughing around the campfire. MV: Beatles or Stones? JC: Impossible to choose a favorite! I always imagine being able to play an acoustic version of Blackbird, and yet easily act seventeen again singing ‘Honky Tonk Women’ with Mick at any opportunity! BIG VIEW

Haunted and s t u o g n a H t s e v r Ha

One Hundred and fifty years ago, HG Wells was born. From his mind, modern science fiction was born and the world was

never the same. From the War of the Worlds to the Invisible Man and of course, the legendary Time Machine. Most people know of this work through the thrilling radio show by Orsen Welles, Halloween 1939, that convinced the nation we were under attack from mars. Today, we are still captivated by the imagination of science fiction and the thrills and mystery that surrounds it from the campy and steam punk Buck Rogers, the quiet excellence of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the game changing Star Wars, the over the top Rocky Horror Picture show to the science time travel of Intersteller and Hail Mary, to the haunted houses and trick or treating in your own neighborhood. You can’t help but wonder when you look at the sky.

This month, there are some really special things happening here in the Modesto area. Let’s do some exploring.

Halloween Guys The Time Machine

Central West Ballet pulls out all the stops for their World Premier production of the Time Machine. This is the first time that a ballet has been written for this thrilling 1895 H.G. Wells story and 1960 film. This is an event you won’t want to miss. Sony Pictures is building the actual time machine and Hollywood designers are building the many of the set pieces, and may well be travelling nationwide after this premier in Modesto. Central West’s Rene Devaluy and Leslie Larson have written and created a production that will be a big Modesto first, and as they claim, “the first sci-fi ballet”, and will keep you entranced. You’ll meet The Traveler who leads the audience into this epic adventure, and you’ll discover the innocent Eloi and predatory Morlock characters straight out of Wells’ thrilling pages. Special appearances by Jack Souza and Jon Cates and show will feature members of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra and you will be transported away to another realm. October 30 7 pm , 31st at 2pm and November 1at 2pm Costume party after the Oct 31st show. Gallo Center for the Arts www.galloarts.org But first, see the movie. The Brady House

What began in 2019 as a neighborhood haunt on Brady Street and grew beyond what that street, is now haunting the Downtown Century. After one season at the Century, the small team of Halloween enthusiasts, family, friends and local supporters began building a bigger experience this year with themed scenes, live scare actors, lighting and sound effects. This is a full-scare experience with actors and jump scares, so parents should use discretion for younger guests. Wednesday, October 28 is the quieter Family Night, with few or no scare actors; it is gentler, but still a haunted-house environment. There is no formal minimum age but it’s a haunted house. One important accessibility note: the temporary haunt is in a basement reached by stairs; there is no elevator or step-free access. Don’t miss the frights at the The Century, 927 10th Street, Modesto (basement) October 23, 6–11 p.m.; October 24, 7–11 p.m.; October 25, 28 7–10 p.m.; October 29, 7–11 p.m.; October 30–31, 6–11:50 p.m. Closed October 26–27. Did you know?

A pumpkin is a fruit, of the gourd family. Gourds belong to the same plant family (Cucurbitaceae), meaning a pumpkin is both a squashbased fruit and part of the broader gourd family. It’s savory, so people think it’s a vegetable, but it’s a fruit.

Riverbank Cheese and Wine

These are two of our favorite food groups, but the Riverbank festival has been presented for over nearly 50 years. There are kids’ corner areas, many local vendors, and a special photo scavenger hunt, dancing horses and festival food and a car show. Enjoy special cheese and wine tasting sessions (separate purchased ticket required) and new this year, Line Dancing & Tastings. So much fun. Music starts at 11 am with No Way Back, then No Way Back (Rock and Roll), Ballet Folklorico Performance, Los Reales del Norte, Cabaitos Chonita, Western Bound, Patron This is a free family single day event on October 10, 10 am to 6 pm Also check out the Run for the Cheese starting at the Galaxy Theatre, and Taste of Riverbank and event showtimes at: www.riverbankcheeseandwine.com

GRAFFITI USA VIEW

October at the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum has a little bit of everything Modesto loves: classic cars, Halloween fun, kids building things with their hands, and plenty of chances to turn old-fashioned traditions into new memories.

Car Show & Trunk or Treat

The Museum’s 2nd Annual Car Show rolls in Sunday, October 4, from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Admission is free for spectators, so bring the family, admire the chrome and fins, talk cars, and check out the Museum’s newly completed improvements, including major upgrades, new restrooms, and refreshed exhibits. A limited-edition Apparel Graphics car show shirt will also be available while supplies last. On Sunday, October 11, from 9 a.m.–2 p.m., Valley Dream Car’s Trunk or Treat takes over the parking lot with decorated vehicles, Halloween costumes, candy, and more than 200 display vehicles, from classics to late models. It’s free for spectators and families—costumes encouraged!

Soap Box Derby

Graffiti USA goes delightfully old-school in October with its first Soap Box Derby Build Clinic & Exposition Race. Racers ages 7–19 can participate for $25, with build clinics October 17, 18, and 24, followed by the big Exposition Race on Sunday, October 25. Participants must attend all program days and have an adult with them throughout the program. This is not a drop-off event—grown-ups get to join the fun, too! Support Local Authors

By Paula Treick DeBoard

Writers! That crisp feeling of fall is in the morning air, and big things are on the horizon. First, romance readers (and writers!) and library supporters are invited to meet bestselling romance writer Katherine Center (aka “the queen of comfort reads”) on Saturday, October 10 at 2 pm. This event, a partnership with the Friends of the Turlock Public Library, promises to be funny, uplifting and hopeful – like any book by the author. Links to tickets can be found on the social media sites for Bookish and Friends of Turlock Public Library. Bookish will

be on hand to sell Center’s recent books for signing, and we’ll be donating 20% of our proceeds to the Friends of the Turlock Public Library. Bookish invites you to Second Tuesday Poetry and open mic on Tuesday, October 13. Featured poets this month are Linda Scheller, a San Joaquin Valley educator and prolific writer, and Lisa Rosenberg, a poet, essayist, and engineer-physicist from the Bay Area. Visit the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center site for more information on these writers (www.mostpoetry.org). And as the weather turns cooler (hope-

fully), we’re heading into fall, and for writers, that has come to signal one thing: novel writing. Bookish is returning for a third year with Novelish, our November-long spin on National Novel Writing Month. To kick things off, we’re hosting Stockton-based writer Matt Abraham on Saturday, 10/17 from 11-1pm, with his presentation of “How to Write a Novel in an Hour” – a way to take your long-simmering idea and put it into action with some macro-level planning and structuring. You can sign up to be part of Novelish and receive a free daily writing prompt in your inbox by emailing bookish@bookishmodesto. com with the subject line NOVELISH. Write Club will be meeting on Mondays from 6:30-8:30pm on October 19 and November 2, 9, 23 and 30. Let’s get some words on the page this fall, y’all!

An update on 24-hour art: Fifty (that’s 5-0) local artists have signed up to participate in 24-hour Art, a creative competition taking place between October 2 and October 3. It’s too late to sign up for the contest, but it’s not too late to support an artist. Bookish will be hosting an art reception on October 6 from 6:30-8:30pm for the top ten finalists, whose work will be displayed on our art wall through the month of October. Here’s where you come in. Stop by to check out the art and cast a vote for your favorite – one vote per person, by the end of the month. The top three pieces will be awarded cash prizes, and all ten finalists will have their work displayed at the Stanislaus Arts Council gallery inside Visit Modesto for the month of November. We’re thrilled to see your artwork and meet new talent in our community!

Prospect Theater

The Essence of Music and Movement

by Quinn Rogers

Have you ever been to The Prospect Theater (PTP)?

I have been going to ProspectTheater Project since I was little, and it has always been special for me. I love Prospect because of the amazing people, the plays they put on, and how everyone makes you feel welcome. The picture in this article is of me with former and founding Artistic Direcor, Jack Souza. He was taking time to explain a play to me. I emailed Laura Dickenson-Turner, the current Artistic Director, to ask a few questions about their 26/27 season.

By Chris Condon

L: No—but I am directing two of them, and work on each show, building/painting sets, coordinating props and costumes, and putting together the programs! Q: Are there any kid-friendly shows? L: Most plays are geared toward 6th grade and up. Silent Sky is appropriate for all ages, although younger kids might get a little antsy. If you have questions about any of PTPs productions, just email them! I enjoy Prospect so much, and I hope you visit because it is a magical place! www.prospecttheaterproject.org

Q: What are you most excited for in the new season? And Why? L: I’m excited about things this season! I think that we have a compelling, varied, powerful lineup of plays. We open the season running with Silent Sky—a beautiful play by Lauren Gunderson about astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, a woman who made history. This performance runs October 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11

VOTE MAMA

As human beings, we inherently know the deep connection between music and movement. Whether stepping onto dance floor to swing to the jitterbug, or listening to Led Zepplin on Spotify as we clean the house, we frequently respond to the one with something of the other. It is a sympathetic vibration – our bodies moving to the music, the music moving through us – that is irresistible, allowing us to feel the delightful essence of being fully alive. Consider, for example, something often regarded as the very essence of life – your breath. Notice the feel of the air coming into and out of the body, how the abdomen rhythmically rises and falls, effortlessly repeating again. Now, with the next exhale, gently add a sigh. Notice how that feels (…good, I’ll bet). When combined – movement, rhythm, sound – they give rise to music. A profound opportunity to experience this deep-seated relatedness between music and movement is scheduled for October 23rd at 7:00 PM at the State Theatre in Modesto. Called “A Night of Music and Movement”, sponsored by the T’ai Chi Ch’uan Academy of Modesto, this event brings together “the healing art of T’ai Chi, live Santoor and Daf music” in a “community celebration of mindfulness, movement, and

cultural expression.” Mindfulness arises organically in the Chinese martial art of T’ai Chi Ch’uan. For example, the T’ai Chi Classics, a text dating back to 19th century in China, repeatedly emphasizes ting jin, often translated as “listening energy”, where one keenly senses the pressure, direction, timing, and intention in contact with another. Similarly, musicians (in this case, the Santoor, similar to the hammer dulcimer; and the Daf – a handheld frame drum) mindfully attune themselves to their instruments, listening to the resonance of sound and its harmonious connection with their fellow performers. This event combining these two ancient art forms – one from China, the other from West Asia – offers an amazing opportunity to experience the joy of our interconnected, shared essence in music and movement. Details are as follows: A Night of Music and Movement: Experience the Beauty of Live Music and the Power of T’ai Chi October 23rd, 2026, at 7:00 PM The State Theatre – Modesto, California QR code for tickets and additional details:
