I just love this. It reminds me of the radio promos back in the 70s and 80s for all the cool shows happening and it just seems to fit, especially here in Modesto.

First, Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. October is just magical and fun for so many, and seeing all the kids trick or treating in our neighborhood is a blast.

We go all out for it each year and it’s great to see the smiles. My 4-year old grandson loves handing out candy from our pirate ship. It’s amazing how Halloween brings our community together, and most of all, really getting into it, dressing up, decorating, the baked treats the creepy menus, cocktails and so much more. There are so many haunted, happy, creepy events and places to visit in the greater Modesto to enjoy and we are featuring a bunch of them here in our BigView in the middle of this October issue. Check it out.

Now for the “Rock” part.

We are celebrating 25 years of local musical talent this month at the 25th Annual MAMA Awards. It is absolutely amazing

to see and enjoy the local music talent we have, in so many different genres. We have Grammy-winning jazz musicians, early rock legends, cool indie, power pop singers and some that have toured the world and Modesto has been part of their experience. My friend Chris Ricci and I wanted to celebrate this amazing talent and in 2000 we created the Modesto Area Music Awards to showcase what we have. From the original event at the Doubletree “Club Maxx” (as it was known in the day), to being included in the Gallo Center Grand opening in 2007 and the 22 times from its home base at the historic State Theatre, the MAMAs are special and our friend Middagh Goodwin is leading the way.

It’s one thing to celebrate what we have and get the music community together for an evening, but our mission right now is more important. How do we all work together to make sure that making music can be a career? How are we going to present more events that pay local bands, how to we bring in national acts and match them with a local performer to get discovered? How do we create more music venues, and get the City and the County to encourage live music in planning, permitting and value.

Most importantly, we need local companies that will sponsor live music so we can really make something happen. The MAMAs have been sponsoring a lot of event and my family has also stepped up, but we need more. True, there have been a lot of hits over the years, but there have been some misses and the pandemic really hit the per-

forming arts hard. Now, let’s use our energy to make sure the performing culture of the Modesto music scene can really shine and team up where ever we can.

This month there are some important non-profit events happening. October is the season for some serious fundraising to help local organization fulfill their mission.

The State Theatre is holding it’s annual Gala Bollywood style fundraiser, the Learning Center is going “Over the Edge” and I will be one of the ones going “over the edge” to raise funds for enhanced learning and tutoring in our community. Community Hospice is presenting Walk and Roll to raise funds for the children of families dealing with hospice care. At the end of the month, United Way presents Power of the Purse for women’s empowerment in community support. Look out for me as I will be one of the “bow tie guys” to help raise funds and we are working hard to build the Graffiti USA Museum. This is about teamwork. I, my company Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group and ModestoView are supporters of these events and I invite you to join in and make a difference here in Modesto.

It is October, and as usual, it is my birthday month. A lot is going forward in the art scene. I will complete seven decades on the same date as the Third Thursday Art Walk, October 17. I will host an Open Studio at 212 Olive on the alley on October 19 and 20, as I have built up a lot of inventory in 70 years.

Downtown, I have one painting on display in the Stanislaus Arts Council Autumn Art Exhibition at their 1315 J Street gallery.

That will end on October 11. This is also the month of Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos. The latter will have a festival at 1010 Tenth Street on October 19. The Arts Council Dia De Los Muertos-themed show will open at Showtime Studios on October

I got to check in with Gerardo Alatorre and get information on the Cali Life market and T Spot Beauty Salon at 1609 Tully Road. Talking to John Black, PRAP will serve wine and art at the McHenry Village Taste of the Valley event on October 11. Fall Friday nights in Modesto are filled with high school football and the volunteer “Chain Gang” keeps the game honest with two people who hold the sticks separated by the 10yard chain and one person who holds down the marker at the line of scrimmage to track each “down” of the game. Norm Sturm is a graduate of Downey High School Class of 1961 and he is celebrating his time as Captain of the Chain Gang for Downey High School for the last 35 years! He has pulled together 3 generations of family and friends over the years to fill the team. Norm’s kids and family are so proud and want him to know much they love him and the tradition at Downey. Modesto Neighborhoods Incorporated is a 501c3 non-profit ID 45-3419360 for organized communities in the city of Modesto. Beyer/Sylvan Lakes Community is under this non-profit and has been fundraising for the Awesome Spot. By popular demand, City Skates skateboard documentary will return to the State Theater on Friday, October 18th at 6:30-8:30pm. The film is about the rise of skateboarding in Modesto starting in 1986 up to the present. The film was well-received and was held over for a second screening at the State.

You scared? Don’t be

The salience of Bistro 120’s location cannot be understated welcoming those into Oakdale with drinks and food. Did you feel like dressing up? Or just goin cazh? Drinks with friends? Or office frenemies? They’ve got you covered. Simply elegant while remaining true to its Oakdale roots, I gift you an elevated experience.

With sizable portions I was able to bring home leftovers! Gotta make sure kitty cat Pretzel doesn’t get more twisty! He demands his tribute and he throughly enjoyed his yum yums! Did the chef know he was cooking for Russian royalty? Because he knocked it out of the park with my Shrimp Scampi. Bestie got her gnosh on with the best steak salad. Prince Charming was really digging his fancy borger with the bechamel sauce. Really everything was delish.

Can we focus on what I’m supposed to be writing about? The drinks of course! Now my old fashioned standards are pretty high and this Cowboy Old Fashioned lifted the bar! Smoked to perfection it came out with all the flourish of my friend in high school.

Like you knew it was gonna be epic but you never know how amazing it is when someone can be themselves! Also where

did he get the smoke machine? Anywho, they brought out my drink in a glass dome! Cinnamon syrup with black walnut bitters…this should be on everyone’s list of must tries!

Next up I sampled the Oakdale Ranch Water, let me say, “Howdy Pardner!” Because that drink had me humming Loretta Lynn and googling where to buy a 10 gallon hat! Side note ten gallon hats are VERY expensive. Like, what down and out cow poke could ever afford such an expense? I digress.

Now after my last dance with tequila I had been put on notice that we could only meet up while being heavily chaperoned. Lord knows even the best handlers can’t keep me away from my bestie with zesties! Chamoy & Tajín rim? Check. Peach & lime juice?

You betcha! Did I drink more? Was I in Oakdale on a work night? Sir. You plague me with foolish questions.

I had one harrowing experience that really made me think about ditching the ten gallon and buying a compass! You guys will not believe me when I say this, but it’s the honest truth: I got lost on my way to the bathroom and ended up at the bar. WEIRD. I just needed directions when a waiter walked past on what I can only describe as a pink fluffy cloud that angels sang “back, back back it up” as he wiggled by me. The bartender was SHOCKED that I had not

tried their La Paz and remedied the sitch before i could get more than two lines into ‘Coal Miners Daughter’! Singani? Manchino Blanco? Raspberry? Lime? Listen. This was an expertly made flip with serious sass.

Listen Linda I’ll sock it to you one more time. I don’t say this often, but if there’s one spot you ought to give a spin in Oakdale, it’s Bistro 120. From the atmosphere, to the windows to the walls, this is THE spot in Oakdale!

many hall of fame performances, bands and artist that have gone on to national acclaim, but every year, there are new bands and developing talent that is truly amazing. MAMA is more than just an award show, but a night for musicians to celebrate musicians and recognize all who are working hard to make great music in here in Modesto. You never know how far people can go. Recently, French Cassettes performed at Outsidelands and I was just reading an article about Effie Passero who was a regular here in our community and she is touring with the Post Modern Jukebox as you read this.

Since we started the MAMAs, our mission has been to promote and support live music of all genres in our area. Some people come down from Sonora, Stockton or Merced, but we strive to make Modesto the epicenter.

One of the highlights each year is the Lifetime MAMA Award for those have gone beyond performing, to teach, give back to the community, empower other musicians and are trailblazers in their own right. This year’s inductee has been at the core of Modesto music since the 1970s. I remember being a “bouncer (aka door ticket guy)” at Mom’s, the pub at Stanislaus State in the early 80s, remembering a mind blowing early new wave performance

Synthesizers have always been a magic thing and David was one of the early innovators and experts in various versions. Staring early with classical and blues piano training, Dave was one of the early adaptors of electronic music in the early 70s, earning his BA in music at UC Santa Barbara and earned as certificate in computer music from MIT. Dave was not only an innovative musician, he is a composer and teacher, still serving today as a Professor of Music Technology at MJC. Dave has been in a band of some sort nearly all of his life, in garage bands growing up and in 1973 formed The Source. Joining the staff of MJC, he founded the new music department where electronic music is still taught and showcased.

In the late 70s and early 80s, there were two versions of Collage, the premier “new wave” band in the area. He has been part of the late Ernie Bucio’s band, as a duo with Penny White, also as a member of The Touch, Prodigy, Easy Street Band, Kid Charlemagne and the Tall and Small, He has composed over 150 pieces for TV, radio, computer games and has performed works in Europe and most recently at the 50th Annual International Computer Music Conference in Seoul, South Korea where at Paiknam Concert Hall he performed his composition “Phantasma”.

What makes Dave a music legend in our community is his non-stop involvement in making music and more significantly his desire to teach, engage and encourage people to learn and perform. He hosts open jams weekly, encouraging people to perform live. Dave has performed around the world, taught and studied in farway places, but returned to Modesto to make a career in music and share his love of music to inspire others living a musical life here with his wife Dianne.

We celebrate the lifetime achievements of David Dow and make sure you take time to listen to him play, or join in at one of his many gigs.

The alumni include John Adey on Bass, Conrad Johnson on Bass, Dave Hawks on drums, and Andrew Rosenblum on Sax. We have had some high school horn players who can play Jazz come down. Please come down for some music, food, and a full bar. I can’t do it without you! We need more places to play live music, especially downtown. Let me know if you have any ideas or ways to make it happen.

We all need to work on supporting the venues that support the arts and creating new venues, as many great bands need to be heard. Together, we can make it happen and see things strive!

There are some great shows at Gallo Center. Still, you can also check out some great venues out of town: The West Side Theatre in Newman, Vinhose Tapas Bar in Merced, Yoshi’s Oakland best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center Santa Cruz, Piedmont Piano Company, the Back Door, and the Sound Room located in Oakland.

Something unique about the Modesto music community that inspires me is the evolving presence of youth bands. When I first noticed this pocket of the scene, the kids from High Voltage were dominating stages, even in pro spaces. Those boys seriously rocked, and I had been unacquainted with the caliber of young musicians before that. Thanks to organizations like Valley Music Institute, we all can experience the hard work and dedication of kids, teenagers, and their supportive families. Audiences of all ages can’t help but get hyped seeing these young artists tear it up like pros (looking at you, Vintage Youth).

One band has been a fixture of the youth category and will soon age out of that niche, even though their professionalism and talent have always stretched far beyond their years.

They Catch Secrets is a GK Music project based in Manteca. The group comprises Mapuana, Ashlyn Hegman, Miles Lima, Owen Machado, and Kaiden Price, all accomplished music students under Gordon Kennedy. The group’s formation and pursuit of recording and releasing their music reflect a focus on commercialization and real-world professional development that music educators don’t commonly invest their resources in.

Their debut EP, “Angel Bones,” was released in August after a year of production. Each track was arranged for the band, with songwriting credits attributed to a handful of writers. “Everyone added flavor to their parts and contributed to a product showcasing everyone’s respective talents.” The opportunity for a new group to collaborate with outside composers and lyricists in a real production setting is a huge professional experience.

The EP’s sound emits this collaborative nature with a vibe that can’t be pointed at any specific genre or theme. My favorite song on the EP is “Another Page,” the only one written and composed by the group’s lead singer and MAMA Award-winning songwriter, Mapuana. There’s just something different about an artist singing their own words and performing from the heart—and Mapuana is all heart.

The band plans to continue playing live shows throughout the 209, and the “Angel Bones” EP is expected to be released on vinyl. Stay tuned for a music video soon and stream “Angel Bones” on all platforms.

Our Modesto city teams are under way in league from the CCAL & WAC from water polo, cross country, girls flag football, volleyball and football.

The Modesto Quarterback Club was established in 1930, actively promoting and supporting Modesto football programs, coaches and players. The Quarterback Club is held every Monday during the football season at Denny’s 1525 McHenry Ave ( by DMC) at 12:00pm. Lunch is $15 it’s a free for one coach from each school. Volleyball: The CCAL teams started league play back on September 19th and will finish their season on October 22nd. The WAC begun play back in September. Both are scheduled for the playoffs on October 28th.

Football: October is also the first week of league play for our football programs, Modesto High will be playing Enochs, Downey against Pitman and Gregori against Turlock. Playoffs are scheduled for CCAL & WAC November 8th.

XC: The CCAL Championships will be held October 8th at Legion Park * WAC Championships will be on October 23rd at River Bluff Regional Park.

Water Polo: CCAL teams start league play on October 1st - October 24th. The CCAL tie braker will be on October 28th . Location TBA. The WAC tie braker is scheduled for October 30th. Location TBA. Local restaurants are the best. We know the people who own and operate them, we are fans of the local menus and we see our local chefs shopping at the farmers market and supporting our local growers. It is great to see Stanislaus Foods tomatoes, Sciabica Olive Oil, Fiscalini Cheese and other locally grown ingredients on our local menus.

There are special times when the chef really has their mark on your dining in really interesting ways and you can see their personality through the food served. Modesto has some amazing culinary talent and we look at three of our local stars who have inspired many great meals and love to experiment. Two if these chefs have been featured in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and have fans that follow the TV show. All of them serve food and an experience with a unique WOW factor. Best of all, these chefs all have a mutual respect for each other and help each other out and share their skills and talents. Let’s meet our chefs.

BAUHAUS – Tye Bauer

The best way to describe an evening at Bauhaus is “culinary roulette”. Tye Bauer has developed his skills working with what he had. He has done film and TV catering where the menu changes with the shooting schedule and what he had. Those same core skills appear today as he has competed in food channel competitions and other cooking expos internationally.

He also grew up with family dinners where dining was a part of the experience, and people talk around the table and share experiences. That still happens today at Bauhaus. From the fresh food selected, each special is a master class on how to make things work.

Tye loves to socialize, and the kitchen and the cooking was the centerpiece. Instead of just mingling at a party, as the chef, he had a reason to interact, ask questions and learn more, harking back to his days growing up in the kitchen and around the kitchen table. Bauhaus is a lot like that, and your dinner is a journey. Every time I go there, I end up sitting at the counter, drinking his famous sangria, and experimenting with what Tye and chef Nicole Dahl create.

You will see recurring themes at Bauhaus. Some vegan and vegetarian options are there because his wife Nicole is vegetarian. One of my favorite things on the menu are the wellingtons, either salmon, beef or lamb, cooked in a cream inside a vegan pastry. Why the vegan? It just tastes fantastic. Seafood is another Bauhaus theme with different takes on cod, octopus, salmon and others. On this visit, we had salmon with an orange buerre blanc sauce. When he makes his codcakes, they sellout.

This month, the new fall flavors are coming. Tye grows his own butternut squash, and this is one of my top fave tastes.

Expect him to riff on this during October along with his favorite fall dish, the lamb Wellington.

When I asked Tye about the Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives fame, he never mentions it. It was cool, but he doesn’t put posters up. Bauhaus is filled with amazing original artworks from local artist Troxler. The kitchen at Bauhaus also doesn’t lend itself to the big fried and grilled foods that Guy Fieri enjoyed. But Guy would love what he is doing now.

So, what does one of Modesto’s most innovative chefs like to eat when he goes out? Sushi was the immediate response. It takes so much effort, cost, tools and fresh fish to make it, it’s so much better to go order it.

If someone new comes into town, my first stop is always Camp 4. It represents everything we love about Modesto and the Central Valley. It encapsulates the history and culture of Yosemite and Royal Robbins, celebrates delicious diverse wines (often enjoyed there by Gallo employees themselves), and incorporates all the best Modesto ingredients from fresh stone fruits to Sciabica olive oils to Fiscalini cheeses to Dave’s Meats to create a fine dining experience in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Celebrating its 15th year, Damon Robbins is the heart of Camp 4 and has brought the cutting edge of food culture to Downtown Modesto. Camp 4 is an experience that makes you proud to

call Modesto home – we caught up with Damon to learn more about what’s next!

How does your personality and culinary perspective show up in your food? “I think Camp 4 incapsulates an idea of adventure and culture in its food and wine choices. The goal has always been to get people to try new things, and for those guests to leave that lunch or dinner experience knowing a bit more about what is out there and to have been treated with love and care.”

If someone were to come in to Camp 4 for the first time,what should they order? “I honestly would want them to order our chocolate churro panini. it’s simple, with contrasting flavors both sweet and salty. There’s not much better than seeing the smile it puts on people’s faces after they’ve tried it.”

What is your favorite dish currently on the menu? “A kale caesar salad with boquerones and fried chickpea. It’s a nod to Concetta, which until it’s closure was one of my favorite restaurants to eat at. I also love Bauhaus and have been really impressed with Galletto lately as well.”

What should we look forward to on the menu this fall?

“Definitely dishes featuring pumpkin and soups will be coming back once the heat subsides and fall decides to peak out behind that curtain of heat we are experiencing.”

Food Fix Butcher and Baker Hank Olson

MUST TRY FOOD FIX DISH: Porkstrami WHEN HANK EATS LOCAL: Bauhaus 209, Tresetti’s, Big Vic’s BBQ, and Mr. Taquito

Many of us are familiar with Food Fix, especially as one of the eating establishments visited by Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives, when it was an operating food truck. The success that the fated visit provided allowed Food Fix Butcher and Baker the ability to realize the dream of a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Downtown Modesto. We took a minute to sit down with Hank and ask a few questions.

What is it that makes you want to cook?

“It’s my peace. When things are crazy, I can always go into the kitchen, start cooking and everything goes away. I can calm down and find clarity and emerge a new guy.”

How does your personality show up in your food? “I think there is a lot of garbage premade food out there. I don’t like eating it. When people come to Food Fix, we make the bun, either processed the meat ourselves with good for you stuff, or have been extremely selective in what we purchase. We want to put out the best product we can, every time, and do a very large portion of the ingredients, which is pretty unique.”

If someone were to come in for the first time, what should they order? “First time?

Definitely try the porkstrami because it is very unique. It is still a favorite of mine.”

What was the motivation behind the Porkstrami? “Well, that’s a funny question. I had been at a Clamper event, where one of the guys made a corned pork shoulder, and it was delicious. I was inspired to replicate this, which I struggled with and after a few near misses, thought, maybe I should cure

this like pastrami. It turned out delicious and has been a cornerstone of our offerings.”

When you go out in Modesto, where would we find you eating? “I don’t go out very much. I like my own food, but when I do it’s Bauhaus 209, Tresetti’s and Vic’s BBQ in Turlock.” That’s all? “Well, guilty pleasure in Mr. Taquito. They have some great stuff.”

What else do you make? “Our spice, which is available at ACE Hardware locally, pickles, pickled jalapenos, jalapeno dill pickles and of course our bread. It was made in house until we go the spot next door to dedicate to baking. Oh, and beer, we have our own label, I brew it with Last Call, but it’s ours.”

You only opened a short time before COVID. How did you make it through?

“Yeah, we had a 6 month run before COVID. Totally packed every day, then COVID. I would have to say though, this community came in and really supported us. I am amazed and feel so blessed. It says a lot about the people here.” You say during COVID? “Yeah, oddly, after COVID, things have slowed a bit.”

So what should we look forward to from you? “Well, I just bought a huge killer smoker, so look for some brisket and maybe some BBQ from the Food Fix. It’s

A Quarter Century of Supporting Local Music Entertainment

Let’s hear from the Chrises about the MAMAs’ history, key moments, and future plans.

Modesto View: Give a little background on what you were doing twenty-five years ago when the MAMAs first came into being. For those who do not know, let our readers know what you are doing today.

Chris Murphy: In 2000, Modesto was on a live local music groove. We had moved back to Modesto to join our family warehousing and logistics company, Sierra Pacific. My wife Becky and I were raising our two daughters, and music and concerts were part of our family routine. I started ModestoView.com to showcase the cool things happening in town. Food, drink, art, community, and music were the main areas we covered.

Chris Rici: 25 years ago, I was launching my promotions business. The world was a different place. We had independent radio stations with live DJs. The Bee printed daily, and we had local bands that played almost every night of the week. The live music

Chris Ricci and Chris Murphy scene in Modesto was being taken to a whole new level, and we were proving not only that you could bring bands from all over the country here but that we had real talent growing up all around us.

MV: You partnered twenty-five years ago and created the Modesto Area Music Awards. What was the catalyst?

CM: Chris Ricci and I had become friends raising money to rebuild the Graceada Park playgrounds with a concert in Mancini Bowl back in 1998. B93.1 was presenting locally programmed music and the annual Summerfest. Music was happening downtown, and bands like UVR, Flying Blind, Matt Nathanson, and Megan Slankard were making waves playing here in town.

Grandaddy was the most famous, touring worldwide while based here in Modesto, playing for 50,000 people in Brazil and then for 100 people at the Dirty Duck. At lunch at Harvest Moon, we conceived a black-tie Grammy-style awards show to showcase our exceptional talent, and the Modesto Area Music Awards were born.

CR: At that point, I had lived in Modesto for a couple of years and felt its potential.

Events in Modesto were just better because the people were so into the scene. We had great events and talent. The MAMAs was our way to showcase the best things about the Modesto music scene.

Founded twentyfive years ago by Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci, the Modesto Area Music Awards began at Club Max with seven handmade awards. In 2001, they moved to the historic State Theatre. On October 15th, the MAMAs will celebrate twenty-five years of local music. Thousands of acts have been nominated and competed for the stainless steel trophy. This year’s event will reflect the journey from Club Maxx to the State Theatre. The event has honored various musicians, including 92-year-old Rockabilly pioneer Don Maddox. Now a nonprofit, it has expanded categories. While attendance is limited, Central Valley TV streams it worldwide.

MV: Did you expect it would still be going strong a quarter of a century later?

CM: It is crazy here we are, 25 years later, still celebrating our local talent. Every year, and all year long, for that matter, our local talent continues to impress.

CR: Then? I thought it would go on forever.

Today? I still do.

MV: How many awards were presented in the first year? Would you like to share any highlights or memories from year one?

CM: Our first show was at the Doubletree in Club Max, which we allegedly filled beyond capacity. It was a great night presenting six awards and our first lifetime to Homegrown. Metal band Built scared members of the Modesto City Council, Flying Blind wore tuxes, Grandaddy heckled, Shelly Streeter wowed the crowd, and it was a fun night that we still have on video. My wife Becky handmade our MAMA Trophies from Mrs. Butterworth bottles. We knew we were on to something good, and lots had to be done. But we knew that night we needed a bigger home, and today, the State Theatre is the home of the MAMAs, and we very much appreciate their teamwork.

CR: My biggest highlight was throwing the Club Maxx event at the Doubletree. It was dark, small, and packed. Everyone was dressed to the nines. I am sure Chris and I

will have the same big highlight, but watching Brian from Built Serenade Vice Mayor Kenni Friedman, looking her straight in the eye, sing, leaning off the stage about 6 inches from her, death metal style, singing “I’D DIE FOR YOU!!” is something I’m just never going to forget.

MV: In the last twenty-five years, there have been acts like Grandaddy, Dev, Marcella, and Flying Blind, who have made a more prominent name for themselves.

Are there any stand-out acts you think would have made it if they stuck around?

CM: Fissure was one of the bands I thought would punch through with their song “Fall Away.” But they broke up. UVR was pop power, and “Got 2 Girlfriends” was right up there with Flying Blind’s “Smokescreen.” Nick Shattel’s Not an Airplane and Clark Begg’s Evening News were standouts. Aaron Durr’s album The Factory was a highlight, and French Cassettes played OutsideLands this year.

CR: Built for sure. They had heavy metal vibes with an undeniable and infectious energy. Hollopoynt, on the pop side, had great melodies and flavor that drove fantastic vibes. It’s both more complex and easier to make it in 2024 than before. There are fewer opportunities to play and more ways to make it organically on the internet.

Be consistent, promote yourself, make postcards, send your schedule out, and most importantly, if you are booked by a local bar or restaurant, make sure your fans show up to make it worth it for the venue.

Chris Murphy, Don Maddox and Jeff Jardine MV:With hundreds of performances at the Modesto Area Music Awards over the last quarter of a century. Which stands out in your memories?

CM: Puffin’ Billies brought the house down, which was one of the most electric moments. Being a part of the 2007 Gallo Center grand opening series was very special. Celebrating Three Dog Night’s Michael Allsup was very memoriable to me as we played his hit songs to him in tribute.

My favorite moment was celebrating K.C. “Don Juan” Maddox of the Maddox Brothers and Rose, the very first Rockabilly band that helped ignite the roots of Rock and Roll. Our tribute to Marirose Powell last year was more than unique, and I am so glad we did that when she could still be a part of it. There have been magic moments.

CR: Marirose Powell and Patty Castillo Davis always lit up the room. You can’t downplay any time Doug Robinett or Mike Allsup took the stage. Flying Blind at the first MAMAs, all in tuxes. There have been so many great performances at the MAMA’s that choosing is a daunting task.

MV: The MAMAs are more than an awards show. When did the Modesto Area Music Association become a non-profit? What do you see as the role of the Modesto Area Music Association?

CM: The MAMAs have been promoting and championing local live music since 2000. We work hard to solicit sponsors to support live music for our event series like Music in the Plaza, Rockin’ Holiday, Art Walk, Jazz and Blues, and acoustic shows.

We have had great support as the goal is to PAY bands to play. This is a profession, and we must avoid thinking that music is free. It is an art, and either we have a cover charge or ticket price, or people need to step up and sponsor so musicians can do this for real. I am grateful for those who always say yes: Gary Nelson, Collins Electric, Beard Land, and Visit Modesto. I am also thankful for the teamwork of the City of Modesto and Stanislaus County, which made access to our public spaces available to showcase our local talent.

CR: We made the association a nonprofit 6 years ago and raised some money. My goal for the association is to provide capital to develop local artists and launch them into regional and national act status. This will take a significant commitment, and while we’ve done well and raised some money, we haven’t achieved the levels that I’d want to see to commit to artists in the way they deserve. I want to see the MAMAs ultimately be like a nonprofit record label that’s out there promoting Modesto’s best musicians and helping them make it to the next level, building themselves, our scene, and our town simultaneously.

MV: What advice would you give to local artists?

CM: Write songs that people will remember. It is a low-level recommendation, but pop songs are popular because they have a hook, and you want to hear them again.

CR: Today, successful musical acts are more than just songs. They are a lifestyle, a community, and an experience. You need to strive for a one-on-one style relationship with your fans. It’s like a tour of your experience as an artist that a fan can be a part of every time you play live. You don’t need radio stations anymore. Your social media channels, YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music, make it easier to get your music out there. The challenge is the time. Some things never change. Even 25 years ago, the acts that put the most time in were the most successful. I used to say for every hour you spend practicing, you should spend 2 hours promoting. Fundamentals don’t change.

MV: Anything else you would like to add?

CM: First, thank you Middagh Goodwin for being the true MAMA leader today.

Your knowledge of our local music scene is so valuable to keeping this alive. Your involvement Entertainment Commission is key and you are truly making a difference.

The goal is national success: playing major cities, releasing new material, and headlining tours. Our community brims with talent, as Grandaddy proved by touring globally while based here. Who’s next? We need more music venues. Losing Fat Cat and Hero’s hurt our scene. Restaurants and bars can’t solely support local music. We need policies that encourage live music venues and make it easier to permit them.

Audiences must support live bands through cover charges or sponsorships to sustain the scene.

Music enriches our community’s character and creativity. Creative cities thrive, and combining local talent with economic development is key. As we build the Graffiti USA Museum, remember that rock ‘n’ roll was central to George Lucas’ iconic film.

Let’s nurture young musicians – the next breakout star could be among them.

This is such an enchanting time of the year. The nights get longer, the breezes get cooler, the air is crisper, the tastes of fall are in the air and there is just a feeling of spookiness.

This is my wife Rebecca and my favorite holiday and we look forward to all of the trick or treaters and see what our grandkids are going to be so we can dress accordingly. So take a deep breath and get ready for the Halloween fun.

Some people like it a lot scary and some not so much and most are in between. But a little bit of Boo in our lives is fun and there is so much to choose from. So let’s do some creepin’ around our area and see what we can find, from the living and from the great beyond. Halloween on October 31 is on a Thursday this year and that means that it’s a school night, so the trick or treat will start early and please watch out for kids and parents, please keep kids out of the road. Parents, make sure your kids are visible. Let’s have a safe and friendly Halloween night.

There is no creepier building in the Central Valley than the Preston Castle in Ione.

This former school for boys is the closest thing we have to a Frankenstein Castle and this year it turns into a creepy carnival. Be careful as you explore the sinister world of a 1920’s haunted traveling circus, where a malevolent Ringmaster recruits from the haunted halls of Preston School of Industry.

As shadows deepen, whispers of resistance among the boys echo against the Ringmaster’s dark ambitions. Will they defy his sinister allure or become haunted specters in his macabre parade 1st Walk through: Gates 6:45 pm, 7:00 - 8:30 pm timed GA tix enter at any time in that period.

Historic Haunts @ Boo Boulevard Stroll back through time in historic Columbia as Boo Boulevard will returns October 26. Trick or Treating, Face Painting, Creepy Crafts, Fish N’ Game, and the Gargoyle Quest are from 2 – 4pm.. The Zombie Flash Mob Dance Performances will be at 3:30 and 4pm. The Photo Booth runs from 2 – 6pm The pre-carved Jack-o-Lantern Contest returns. Everyone is invited to march in the Halloween Parade, 4:30pm, and compete for prizes in the Costume Contest from 5-6pm. Bring the family, and hang out with the ghosties and ghouls! This is a free event sponsored by Friends of Columbia State Historic Park and Black Oak Casino.

This is part of a great series that has been playing in Modesto over the last few years, called Candlelight Concerts. Held at the Century Modesto or at First United Church Modesto, these are beautiful string performances by the Listeso String Quartet, presented by candlelight. It’s romantic or spooky, your call but regardless it will fun to do.

Evin Agassi

Who would have celebrated his 79th birthday on September 25th. His remarkable career spanned nearly 50 years, during which he released over 40 albums between 1967 and 2023. Seeking social and political freedom, Agassi relocated to Modesto, California, in the late 1970s.

Sadly, he passed away on September 17, 2024. Agassi was one of the greatest Assyrian artists and a cultural Icon.

When it gets to be that spooky time of year, one’s mind may easily drift toward scenes of the macabre and characters that go bump in the night, or perhaps of places that would give you the willies if stuck there overnight - mortuaries, cemeteries, or crematoriums! While Modesto has its historical cemeteries and a number of funeral homes, history shows that in order to find the origins of cremation in town, you do not have to go as far back as you may think.

In fact, the presence of crematoriums in Modesto is a rather modern development, dating back only two decades, despite the longtime presence of mortuaries and embalming facilities in downtown Modesto.

There are funeral homes that readily come to mind for long-time Modesto residents, like Franklin and Downs, which used to be located at the corner of 12th and G Streets before expanding to their McHenry Avenue location. But, these funeral homes in Modesto for well over a century offered only primarily traditional funeral preparation services. At the start of the 20th Century, if cremation was preferred to standard burial, Modestans had to send their deceased loved ones to mortuaries in neighboring cities or to places as far as the Bay Area that provided cremations. These included the California Crematorium (1909) in Oakland and the Park View Crematorium (1917, the first in San Joaquin County) near Manteca, along with Sunset View Mortuary (1908) near Berkeley, the Casa Bonita Crematorium (1928) in Stockton, and the East Lawn Crematorium (1904) in Sacramento.

It was not then until the turn of the 21st Century that the prospect of a crematorium opening in Modesto was presented. At that time, Modestans relied on the more local options of Ceres Memorial Park and Lakewood Memorial Park near Hughson

for cremation services. In August 2002, Charles Evans II, proprietor of Evins Funeral Home, announced his intent to build and operate what would become the city’s first crematory at his 1219 7th Street funeral home. But, as in other towns where funeral homes attempted to introduce cremation services in the more modern era, this proposal was rife with controversy, primarily concerns of odor and emissions.

Even the Mayor at the time, Carmen Sabatino, was worried about the notion of a crematorium in the downtown area and its effects on economic development. But, the permit was granted by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, stating there was no significant health risk posed by the proposed crematorium. The permits granted between August and October 2022 then triggered a lengthy process of meeting infrastructure needs and city requirements in order to be able to move forward.

Ultimately, in November 2003, the 12-ton crematory machine was delivered to Evins and installed, which officially meant cremation would be available to Modestans in Modesto. Even though Modesto’s first crematorium is no longer located at 1219 7th Street, the former mortuary has been home to another business fitting for the spooky season all year round - the Daydreams and Nightmares costume shop!

PERFORMING VIEW

By Chris Murphy Besides all of the haunted activity this month, there are some really cool live performances on the stages of our community. We start off this month this something really unique and special.

The Prospect Theatre is presenting the Radio Cavalcade. These are “live” radio broadcasts, with actors, live music, sound effects and all of the traditional makings of the golden age of radio. This month, enjoy performances of “Ghost Story”, where a wealthy matron holds a seance-themed party in jest, but the evening takes a turn when she gets an unexpected guest who won’t leave. Also performed is “Sorry, Wrong Number”, originally tour with actress Agnes Moorehead. An invalid woman battles the frustrations of the telephone system after she overhears a plot to murder someone and no one will believe her. Oct 26 at 7 pm www.prospecttheatreproject.org The Gallo Center is off to a great season this year and has a line of hits for October, including the season opener of the Modesto Symphony, featuring Branford Marsalis.

This is not one to miss and it is early in the month. Then we blast off with LeAnn Rimes and a string of hit shows, including the legendary and one of a kind Wayne Newton. I know what you’re thinking, but we are going. 1970s leisure suits anyone?

Volenté Coffee - Coffee with a Mission

The ViewCrew is all about good local coffee. There are some great local coffee roasters that really have some amazing beans and flavors. Coffee is like wine, olive oil and other great foods and flavors that have characteristics based on the type kind of fruit and diverse origins. The Modesto Gospel Mission has a goal to transition people from the streets and addiction into homes and a new life, and these delicate coffee beans with a personality are playing an important role here in Modesto.

Jason Conway and Scott Pernice had a new business idea and working with the Stanislaus Community Foundation with a grant from the Porges Family Foundation, they have built a new social enterprise business with a social impact and benefit; importing and roasting coffee for sale in our community to make it a sustainable business and they landed on the name Volante, meaning “willing or wanting”.

Enter our friend Tony Serrano, Modesto’s coffee expert and trainer who is helping educate, like he always does, about the world and the intricacies of coffee. He began to work with Ron, who is a resident and has fought addition and is now two years sober, and found that he had a great talent for flavors and the roasting process, which is very much both an art and a science. As a result, delicious coffee with rich open flavors are

now being sold by Volente. Varieties of imported beans are managed, blended to great fresh and light coffees.

Volente coffee is now sold at the Bake Shop in downtown Modesto and is available on-line for home delivery. Their goal is to make retail and wholesale product and even provide remote coffee services. They set up every week on the Gallo Winery campus to prove the business model.

We need more programs and ideas like this. Volante is creating jobs on campus with additional roasting support. These are the things that change our community and create long-lasting change.

JM: What was your inspiration for opening?

DW: My goal has always been to take one person at a time, introduce them to yoga, and provide such a profoundly positive experience that they want to make it a part of their lifestyle.

Namaste, friends, and welcome to the first installment of The 209s Yoga Studio Spotlight. This article aims to draw attention to the area’s diverse yoga community and introduce the people responsible for providing wellness to the valley. We will dive deeper into their intentions behind opening a studio, what currently makes them unique, and future offerings you can expect to see.

I thought there was no better place to start than with the longest-running studio in the Central Valley. Located in Modesto’s historic McHenry Village, Village Yoga Center opened its doors 24 years ago under the stewardship of Debbie Wolski. In 2022, Sonja Hurst came aboard as a partner and has been an absolute godsend in Miss Debbie’s words. It doesn’t take long to absorb the magical atmosphere that permeates the Village Yoga Center. From the hand-painted murals, the jaw-dropping black panther gong, or her very own collection of children’s books sold in their on-site boutique, Village Yoga exudes the aura that is Miss Debbie. It is no wonder that the teacher training program has graduated over 315 students under her mentorship.

JM: How did yoga enter your life?

DW: It was by instinct. I have scoliosis, and around the age of 15, I would lie down on

JM: I have heard the phrase “the softer side of yoga” to describe attending a class at Village. Do you feel this is accurate, or is there more you would like potential clients to know about your current class schedule?

DW: Even though we offer various levels (of difficulty), we still harken back. To help heal people, we must provide them with a soft place to land. Everyone needs this at some point.

JM: What is on the horizon?

DW: Sound is the next wave of medicine.

We’ve been lucky to work with Kaiser for the last five years, providing sound events for its staff. We want to expand upon this by offering a package of voice analysis, sound table, and singing bowls to identify potential issues in the body and promote healing. We also have some fun and fabulous retreats still in the planning stages and offer a monthly women’s circle.

Practice with Miss Debbie every Monday and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. for what she has coined “Yoga Lite,” or her fun and stimulating “Cardio Core,” which includes elements of pilates, yoga, and dance that follow at 11:30 a.m.

Poetry Night returns to LoFi Diner on the second Wednesday in October, 10/9, 7:30pm!

ZEN VIEW Simple Pleasures

Such a pleasure to be outside in this perfect fall weather.

I’m no longer running from the excessive heat we had weeks ago. Time has come to savor the last days of summer. The breeze is lovely. Life all of a sudden seems more simple, more enjoyable. Pleasure can come dropping into our lives at any moment. It happened to me the other day in a kind of unexpected way.

Recently my car wouldn’t start, luckily I wasn’t too far away from home, but it was already dark and I had to call a tow truck company to arrange to be towed home.

Even though I had already tried to start the car a couple of times with no luck, a friend told me to try it once more. Lo and behold, this time the engine started up and I could go home! The next day I dropped the car off to have it checked out.

Having no car to do my grocery shopping I thought it presented a rare chance to

walk to the store, an easy 15 minute walk. I walked by one of those mobile fruit stands that I’ve seen in Mexico. There are many here in our valley. Usually I zoom right past them in my car. I want to stop but never think I have the time. Now being a pedestrian, I was able take a close look at the vendor’s many beautiful fruits, peeled and carved to perfection, pineapples, melons, cucumbers and mangoes. I decided to have a combination of mangoes and melon slices which were carved for me right then and there. So fresh, so sweet. I went home carrying my groceries in one hand and eating my delicious fruit with the other. Without getting on a plane or a train I felt transported to have a taste of Mexican culture, and a feeling that I had had a mini vacation from my usual routine. I walked home with a big smile.
