I love Rocktober.  So many things are happening, the weather is changing, maybe some rain, but the evenings get darker as we work our way to Halloween at the end of the month.

But first things first, our new granddaughter is a month old already and these are magical and the most important times and we have one proud big brother.  I treasure these moments and we count our blessings to have our family so close to us.

There is much to do in October, much to see, much to hear, much to eat, much to drink and much to experience.   Really good things are happening.  The Modesto Children’s Museum is now open and our own grandchild has already experienced the fun.  We are proud to be founding donors and things like this are really important to our future.   Now, I need you all to help us get the Graffiti USA Museum built.  There has been a lot of background construction, and now it is time to actually start the fun stuff.  We need you, we need your company to be founding donors.

Thanks to some large-scale donations, you

should see some big outside construction starting in November. If you are interested in being a part of making this happen, please reach out to me and I will be happy to meet up with you or your group and show you the possibilities.  It will be magic.   Museums bring our culture and history to life and are good for our city.  Check out the poem this month from Salvatore Salerno on page 6.

Every October, we celebrate our local music scene at the Modesto Area Music Awards.  In 2000, Chris Ricci and I decided to celebrate our local music big time Grammy style, so the MAMAs were born, and now 23 years later, we are still showcasing the amazing talent we have here in down and showcase all of the different genres, venues and events that happen each year.   This year we are celebrating the people that keep the music going into the future.  We celebrate the music teachers and the music programs in the schools that bring MoBand to life and keep it running.  This year the MAMAs recognizes our rock and roll music teacher, Darin Morris of VMI Rocks, for being a champion for music education and preparing the next generation to rock so “somebody scream!  I have known Darin

since our Beyer High days, and he is the real rockin’ deal.  Please take time to check out all of our local nominated bands and to vote for MAMA.   This is how we make the #1 list for Hidden Gem music and now we need to make the list for best music, period.  Vote now at www.modestoareamusic.com and stay tuned for the winners announced on October 17 from the State Theatre.

And finally, all roads lead to Halloween. There are things to do all month long, more people and businesses are getting in on the action, and more creepy stage shows like Frankenstein and haunted film fests at the State Theatre.  Take time to have some fun, get some thrill and chills and most of all enjoy being a kid again when you can.   It is good to look at the good and fun things to do and the people that create them here in Modesto USA.  This is the mission of ModestoView, to Serve Civic Pride Daily.  Thank you to all of the people that get into the spirit of teamwork, make local things happen and the businesses that advertise in ModestoView that make it possible to bring it to you in print.

Walk & Roll with Community Hospice October 22nd!

The start of this season is a time of giving and many walks and runs planned to help community organizations reach their goals and garner widespread support. This year, it is exciting to share that Community Hospice has started a new event this year specifically to support Gabriel’s Friends Pediatric Fund supporting the Pediatric Care Programs offered by Community Hospice. While most think of the elderly as the main recipients of hospice care, children are also recipients of this care which helps to provide enhanced quality of life through palliative and hospice end-of-life services. While it is impossible to imagine the difficulties many families experience as they make the decision to move to hospice care, the Walk and Roll is a time to show your support for those in need and to hear firsthand from those who are currently receiving care and to share what

Our todays are yesterday’s dreams performed, our tomorrows a mixture made from todays, our yesterdays archived for our tomorrows, so all three times meld as one in the same. What spaces can anyone enter to see them?

Pardon the rhyme, but of course a museum! Museums are portals to otherwise times, and our modest town has its fair share of them. First the earth, remember, contains all of time. The Great Valley Museum was built as a tribute to what these lands are, once were, and still could be— of wild rose and elderberry, of wetlands and tule, of long riparian corridors and wide oak savannah. As the folk song does not say, This land was not made for [just] you and me, but also for the First of Us, for coyotes and beavers, magpies and soaring hawks, for all the wild creatures that move in the valley, to thrive and pass on in their own native terms. Your Great Valley Museum, then, serves as reminder for us to cherish, preserve, and serve as protectors. Yes, yesterday’s gone, but the past still remains. That’s true for local history too, as McHenry Mansion and Museum stand to prove. Step on through and take in their furnishings, schoolroom and store, washers, stoves, lamps, farm tools, mining scales… “Oh, that’s so 19th Century!” one may complain. Oh, really, retro much? Haven’t you ridden a train or a bike, listened to radio, taken a photograph, tapped on a qwerty keyboard, even today?

Everything old gets re-fashioned anew! Muse on that, folks, respect your elderly grandthings for what, and how, the otherwise people used to live.

Remember American Graffiti, that break-out movie that captured Modesto of ’62? That Lucas dream enshrined those high-school ways on the pop culture map with its water balloons, full moon and Pharaohs, sock hops and slick hair, teen angst and car-rolling chatter, cops with bow ties and a growling Wolfman Jack with his “boss” music, roller-skate waitresses at the drive-in hangout, burgers and Cokes, jukeboxes, and all throughout, young love found and missed. The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, nostalgia housed indoors, showcases the sculpted rides from those free-wheeling years, the ‘50 Chevy, ’56 Lincoln…Check it out, cats and kittens!

The future is built out of imagination, from exploration, and from the whimsical play of our children today. The Modesto Children’s Museum, conceived in 2019, nurtured these years past, is now their arena to grow. It will have the Tall Tales stage, with music, dance, puppets and plays; it will have a Maker Space for art; it will have a vortex climber for those with nimble skills; it will have learning labs for the secrets of water flow, for the subtleties of air and light, shown through games; it will have exhibits, farm-to-table, and much more. Fast forward their pledge to build through to this year, when their past plans for that future have become now. Time-capsule portals to all our days, that’s museums— but I’ve blabbed long enough, so just go and see ‘em!

It is October Country with Halloween and autumn leaves. In the Art Scene, you can go Trick or Treating a bit early by picking up a FREE map and visiting any number of the 47 artists in 27 Studio venues on October 21 and 22. Studio stops in Turlock, Ceres, Modesto, Oakdale, and Knights Ferry. It’s advisable to plan your route in advance. Printed maps are available at various locations such as Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Arts Center, Chartreuse Muse, Dragonfly Art for Life, and online at http:// stanislausaos.com. The event is open to all ages, free to attend, with art for sale, art demonstrations, and friendly artists available to discuss how they create their works and the studio spaces they work in. My studio is number 10. Signs will be posted for all the locations.

October 19 marks the Tenth Year of the Art Restores Kids Exhibit, a fundraiser for Cricket’s Hope, Inc. The Art Restores Kids program promotes healing through restorative groups and art. This year, there are 86 pieces of kids’ artwork on display for interpretation, and 97 pieces of art coming in for the show. The Autumn Art Festival member’s show at Mistlin Gallery concludes on October 14. The Best of Show winner is Nicole Slater, who also won First Place in the Water Media category and Mixed Media. Other first-place winners are Terry Silva in the 3-Dimensional category, William Harris in Graphics and Photography, and Brian Paris in Category 2 for Oil and Pastel. On October 18, the Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Complementary Therapy annual exhibit opens. Following this show is the Give the Gift of Art opening on November 21. A call for Artists for two Photography competitions in 2024, one open worldwide, is currently available, with entries due by December 15. This may result in a multi-venue exhibition. Please check in at Stanislaus Arts Council Mistlin Gallery for the prospectus. A new Grace Lieberman Cabaret Series event is announced for

November 4, with tickets and information available at the gallery.

The Modesto Junior College Art Gallery will close the MJC Art Faculty Exhibition on October 5. The MJC gallery is located on the East Campus and is open Monday to Thursday from 10 AM to 4 PM. While in the area, you can visit the Kruse-Lucas showroom gallery at 525 Tully Rd to see the Plein Air art of Vince Walsh. Nearby, Kaila Kindly will have his Eleven11 Kansas art and music studios open from 10 AM to 2 PM on October 21 and 22. The Third Thursday Art Walk is scheduled for October 19. Suzanne Staud will be the featured artist at the Chartreuse Muse until December, with an Artist Reception on October 14.

October often marks the start of the holiday gift-shopping season. It also happens to be my birthday month, so you can get a head start on the season and the new year with the 2024 Coffee Cats Calendar or a tee shirt featuring my original art at http:// Coffeecatscalendar.com. There will likely

be pop-up shows for artists and crafters, as well as events to attend that Art View doesn’t have information on. I do know that local artists have participated, donated, and even had their work displayed on the walls at the Graffiti Museum. Make sure to check out the Children’s Museum downtown on Eleventh Street and support your local artists, galleries, and art-sharing venues.

Indigeny Reserve Autumn Festival

The Dark Cherry is so-close to being a sour, it’s a “gentle sour” ha!

They have two seasonals, the Apricot and Summer Peach. Both are delectable!

The Harvest Blend is created from a blend of apples grown on 100+ year old trees. It is more mild, and has more sugar, so it is much sweeter on the pallet.

Nestled in the gorgeous woods of Tuolumne County in the city of Sonora, is a barn surrounded by several groves of apple trees. Those groves were purchased by Jay & Judy Watson back when Indigeny Reserve was just an idea. At first, he sold the apples straight from the tree, and soon decided to tap into the cider market with an amazing cider recipe. Their son Joe joined the business as the Orchard Manager. Now it is a national brand, and the barn is an attraction for locals and tourists alike. The barn is complete with a tasting room, gift shop filled to the brim with local vendor’s wares and you can even take a tour of the barrel room. Surrounded by picnic tables, outside games for kids, ample parking, tons of shade provided by super old trees, and lush apple groves & grape vines as far as the eye can see. They do full facility tours often, so check their facebook for dates and times.

The name “Indigeny” comes from combining the words “indigenous” and “synergy”. The company has thrown themselves into reducing, reusing, recycling and re-purposing as much as they possibly can. They bottle

in aluminum cans because aluminum is easy to recycle, and doesn’t make a mess if one is dropped on the floor like glass does. It also helps the product last longer, as aluminum keeps out light. The aluminum packing earned them an international design award. Another way they reuse is that during the distilling process, the isoprophyl alcohol pulled out from the Brandy & Vodka is then reused to keep their fermenting tanks cold.

Organic apples create a wax seal on their skin naturally, and this skin allows the apples to stay fresh and sweet 9-10 months in a fridge. Watson’s apples are stored, then washed, dried, juiced, filtered and fermented for 3 weeks. The entire process from picked to bottled is about 7 weeks. They grow an average of 11,000 Granny Smiths and 7,000 Honeycrisps annually.  They currently offer several flavors-some on tap and some in bottles:

The Original Crisp cider is made from granny smith apples, and uses champagne yeast for a dry finish. (Also comes in an organic variety!)

Blackberry is the Crisp recipe with blackberry juice added. Very sweet, smooth and delicious!

Bubbly Ciderbration is their take on champagne and it’s truly elegant.

And the favorite of the season is always the Pumpkin! This sells out quickly, so if you like it be sure to buy several bottles and keep it in the fridge for your October, November and December festivities. And it doesn’t stop at cider! They have mastered the art of distilling, too! Their Brandy is aged 3-5 years in used Jack Daniels casks. It is a blend of all cider flavors, then distilled twice to get a clean, fresh finish. It’s smooth and delicious! Great on it’s own or in a mixed beverage. Limoncello and Orangecello Liquer were recently added to their forte. So even if you prefer cocktails, they have you covered! The Annual Autumn Festival is a monthlong celebration every Saturday in October from 11am-4pm. There is a $5 parking fee. The pumpkin patch will be open for your

autumn produce needs and for your family photo opportunities. Each Saturday will feature a different band, several food trucks, craft vendors, a scarecrow contest, and don’t forget the most important aspect: Indigeny is a family friendly venue! There is tons of space for your kids to play and they have musical instruments, a sandbox with construction equipment and hayrides! Get your group together and play the disc golf course. Take a stroll on the hiking trail. Don’t miss out and bring some bottles home to enjoy on Halloween!

The question of how I get nominated often arises just after the voting goes live. The easiest way to get noticed is to email your gigs to events@modestoview.com. This not only shows your active but also gets your local shows added to the ModestoView calendar online and in print (if you submit them before the 20th of each month).

In July/August, we start crowd-sourcing by asking past winners, promoters, venues, DJs, writers, and music schools for their picks. Anyone can submit their recommendations. We want to hear from your peers, those who have booked or played with you. So, please feel free to recommend your friend’s band or anyone you have booked or performed alongside. It carries more weight when a promoter, club owner, another band, or comedian vouches for you.

Another question we receive when voting begins is why certain genres are not included or why certain categories are combined. It is typically because there are not enough active participants in that genre to warrant the time, expense, and effort required to celebrate it. If you would like to see genres like Rockabilly, Reggae, or perhaps a new category like SKA, celebrated, consider booking shows, starting a band, or encouraging others to build up that scene. Last but certainly not least, how can I attend the MAMA Awards live at the historic State Theatre on October 17th? All MAMAees are entitled to bring a guest free of charge. We also extend invitations to city council members, community dignitaries, DJs, and past winners to present or co-present awards. So, if you are eager to

attend but were not nominated, reach out to one of your friends who was and ask if you can be their plus one. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Darin “Somebody Scream” Morris. Music teacher, owner of the Valley Music Institute, and guitar virtuoso. He has been playing and teaching music for over 4 decades and has taught a number of the current MAMAnees as well as past winners. He himself won as part of Donnie & the Wayrads, and Modstock has taken the honor several times. His dedication to teaching the next generation as well as continuing to practice his craft is truly commendable.

Modesto Area Music Association (MAMA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. If you are able, please consider donating to support. The MAMA Awards show is a communitybuilding event, and being nominated or winning a MAMA is just the beginning. It can be a stepping stone towards bigger opportunities. Congratulations to all the MAMAees! Modesto and the 209 are the true winners, thanks to the abundance of talented performers we have. “Don’t KNOCK The Hustle”

Noel Serafin Aka E-Nock is just the type of guy to lead a crew, and this crew is Knock Squad. We had a chance to talk with him about preserving the future of Bboy culture in Modesto.

Knock Squad, what is it, who are you?

Hi, my name is Noel Serafin, I go by the name of E-Nock. I currently teach at Luv2Dance in Modesto. I also sub at Alegria Ballroom Dance 320 in Turlock.  I started Knock Squad because I wanted my students to be a part of something and not just come to class every week.

How did you go from Bboy to teacher?

My feeling that there might not be a next generation of Bboys or BGirls. This made me realize I should be teaching this art. That is when I transitioned into becoming a teacher.

What type of events have your students been showing off these new dance moves? Well, every studio has its yearly recitals. We encourage dance at any event we get a chance to perform at, such as schools, churches, parks, and definitely an important one DOMO First Fridays.

Are you taking on new students?

I’ve been teaching about eight years and I have never denied any student, so yes, I am taking any and every student that is willing to learn this art.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

If you haven’t yet heard about the Central Valley Youth Chorus, prepare to be excited! Central Valley Youth Chorus is a new community childrens’ choir, dedicated to creating opportunities for young singers to do what they love most: sing. Founded recently by local musicians and educators Polly Vasché, Chelsea Foy, and Beth Holtan, CVYC’s mission is to help kids discover their spirit of creativity, compassion, and teamwork through the transformative art of choral music. CVYC currently rehearses and performs in Downtown Modesto but has big dreams, and expects to expand its reach “to children in underserved areas. This will mean establishing CVYC “pods” or neighborhood sites which are more accessible. We look forward to bringing this concept to reality,” says Vasché. Beth Holtan, the choir’s inaugural conductor, says: “CVYC will be a place where children discover hidden talents, and understand how they are an integral part of our community.” The Central Valley Youth Chorus is currently accepting new singers, grades 4-8! The choir meets weekly to rehearse, and will have their first public performance in December. CVYC is also accepting donations to help fund their cause, and has applied for nonprofit status. A Haunting In Modesto

Have you ever driven by the sprawling brick mansion on Magnolia Avenue just off of Needham Street and wondered why or how a stately castle ended up in the heart of Modesto? Of the more recognizable homes in the Modesto area, not many are as distinctive as “Hawke Castle” at 115 Magnolia Avenue in the College Area Neighborhood, with its rounded towers, brickwork, and slate roof. The home was built for the family of Edwin R. Hawke (1881-1941), who was the manager of the J.C. Penney store in Modesto and a prominent businessman.

Hawke was originally manager of the flagship J.C. Penney department store in Kemmerer, Wyoming before being transferred to Modesto for the opening of the Penney store in 1916. Under Hawke’s leadership, J.C. Penney sponsored one of the first summer series of concerts by the Stanislaus County Boys’ Band held in Courthouse Park in 1930. Hawke also was elected twice as District 2 Director for the Modesto Irrigation District, and served from 1937 to 1941.

Construction of the Hawke residence began in 1929 at the onset of the Great Depression, and the Norman-styled home was completed in February 1930. According to issues of the Modesto Bee from 1930, Hawke Castle was built with a cost of $200,000. The Normandy-inspired home was designed by the Bay Area

architect Clarence Casebolt Dakin, and the front and rear yards were designed by prominent landscape architect, Harvey Gilkey, both of Oakland. The backyard included a swimming pool, making Hawke Castle likely one of the earlier homes in Modesto to have a pool. Construction was done and overseen by local firm George Ulrich Construction Company. When built, the expansive home had ten rooms, four bathrooms, and a finished basement for entertaining. Hawke Castle was even featured in a 1930 issue of Architectural Digest.

After Edwin R. Hawke passed away at the age of 60 years old, his wife Hazel W. Hawke sold the home in 1941 to Al and Dorothea Goldschmidt, an engineer and high school teacher respectively. The Goldschmidts lived in the Castle until they passed away, Al in 1962 and Dorothea in 1965, at which point the home eventually was sold to Dr. E. Burnett Tonge in 1970 and then to other subsequent owners. Luckily despite the numerous changes in ownership of Hawke Castle over the years, the integrity of the historic gem on Magnolia Avenue has been well maintained. Due to being a fine example of unique architecture and its connection to early 20th Century business growth in Modesto, the City Council designated Hawke Castle a City Landmark in 1991, becoming the second private residence in the city to be a protected historic structure.

Huddle in close around the campfire, fellow music lovers, while I share a spooky story with you. Any presenter of music with a decent tenure is likely to collect a handful of horror stories, but mine is a literal tale of horror, the stuff of nightmares, something which still leaves me perplexed and haunted thinking about it years later. Anyone familiar with the MU concert series knows that we favor original songwriters. We don’t feature cover or tribute bands. The one exception is an annual showcase that premiered ten years ago, a December event called ELEGY, during which some of the area’s best songwriters get together and pay homage to the notable musicians who passed on during the calendar year. Now 2017 was the year that filmmaker George Romero died. You know, the creator of the ‘Night Of The Living Dead’ series. I proposed branching out a bit and doing a song in his honor. Clearly, there was only one song choice here: ‘Zombie’ by The Cranberries, despite everyone in that band still being among the living. One of my young songwriter friends signed on to include the song in her set. She did a lovely job, and the showcase was a hit as always.

A month later, The Cranberries’ lead singer Dolores O’Riordan was found dead in her London hotel room.

What? The? Faust?

The official report was that Dolores drowned in her tub after passing out drunk. Perhaps that’s all there was to it. My own suspicion, though, is that I somehow unleashed a death curse upon the poor lass by folding her into a ritual invoking the musical spirits of the departed. Damnit, I just wanted to throw an extra bit of fun into the evening, not blow the lid off Pandora’s Box!

Don’t blame the gal who actually covered the song. (I won’t name her outright, but I CAN tell you that her maiden name is one letter away from ‘Elvira,’ adding an extra dash of darkness to this eerie affair.) I’m the one who put her up to it, and I’ll accept the full measure of blame. If my theory is correct, I’m headed for the seventh circle of hell for my unwitting part in the tragic loss of this beautiful musical talent. But before I go, I’m going to keep enjoying all the cool cultural events I can that Modesto has to offer.

Circling back to the circles of hell, the State Theatre has something different and worthwhile for this Halloween season. It’s a screening of the first full-length horror movie ever released: ‘L’Inferno,’ a 1911 adaptation of Dante’s classic poem about his exploration of Hell. Indie chamber music group Montopolis (hailing from Austin, TX) is on tour along with the film, providing a live soundtrack to the devilish action, using a mix of psych rock, dark wave, and terrifying sound effects. Catch this silent-film masterpiece on Sunday 10/15 at 6 pm, showing one night only. Tickets are $17, available at www.thestate.org. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. Who’s your pal? Pupz ‘n’ Palz saves the day

Where do they go?

When animals lose a home or are lost, where do they go? Traditionally, we all think of the pound, a government run en tity that tries very hard to reunite pets and owners.  But in the course of time, these institutions were never designed to handle the extreme number of pets.

But it is much more than that and there are so many needs in our community, that it really does take a community of different groups to make sure pets are safe and get a good home.

When asked about how Pupz began, Founder; Karri Husman shared a story.

While looking through Craigslist to adopt a dog, she found a cattle dog, dirty, withdrawn and not eating.  Sent home, dog in hand and with prescribed dog food, she stopped to get some tacos because her day was long, then she realized the dog was sniffing her for the tacos, which she shared, and the two began their bond, leading to a return to health and eating.  The fire was lit and there was no turning back, Pupz n Palz was born.

Enter the compassionate… Pupz n Palz Rescue.  Founded in 2009, they have taken 600-700 animals off the street annually, prior to COVID-19.  Currently, due to steep increases of price, they are hovering at 200-300.  Post COVID-19 funding has also has decreased, making it hard to take in fur babies that need bottle feeding or special needs animals.   COVID also made things worse as there are many pets adopted during this time that are now looking for new homes, so funding is extra important.

With a regular crew of volunteers (around 5) it is pretty difficult to operate.  When asked about what could be done here, Karri said, “we need more volunteers, we need more donations to cover the increased costs, but more importantly, we need people to adopt the animals.”

There is a pet for everyone they have plenty to choose from.

Falcon’s Lair Brings Vintage Hollywood to Life.

This October, we celebrate the Haunted Mansion and the vintage elements of Halloween lore, it is only appropriate that we explore the Hollywood legends and enjoy going back in time to the glitz and glam of the silent era.  Rudolph Valentino was a legendary presence in silent film Hollywood, throwing elaborate parties and private gatherings at his exclusive home, the Falcon’s Lair.

Moe Willey and her family wanted to create a destination, an experience, an escape from the outside world to relax, eat, socialize, turn off your phone and lose yourself, even if for just a while.  Adjacent to Highway 99 in Ripon, Falcon’s Lair does just that.

Upon entering, you are transported to the gilded age with two choices to make, dining room or the bar, or social room. The dining room is filled with tall-backed booth for privacy and in the middle, large round tables, named the Capone tables to see and be seen.  In true Disney form, the servers are “cast members” and dark curtains cloak the entrances and exits.

Entering the bar feels like discovering a speakeasy where seating groups are named Gatsby, Gable, Rita, Buchannan, Chaplin and others.  There is a long marble bar, featuring cocktail elixir stands, a Victrola, and green shaded lights.  Once seated you halfway expect F Scott Fitzgerald to walk in, or even Valentino himself.

Before we go further, social is the name of the game here.  Drink preparation is an experience. Plates are designed to be shared, appetizers come on birdcage style carriers and there is no rush as you navigate the selections with the guidance of knowledgeable and helpful cast members, some that

are aspiring actors working their way to the big stage. This is an escape back in time.

Around the walls, large TVs show vintage films.

Now seated, your first decision is which of the amazing cocktails you will select.  This

is truly craft cocktail preparation.  If it’s your first time, I recommend the Falcon Smoked Old Fashioned.  The Woodford Reserve whiskey is smoked in a crystal decanter, poured tableside and it is both tasty and beautiful.   If you are think-

ing something lighter, I recommend the Lavender Gin Fizz.  Empress gin infused with lavender and misted to perfection in a coupe glass.   If you want something sweeter, the Strawberry Fields is a winner.  The surprise of the day is the Ripon Al-

mond Sour.  If you share, Rick Dalton’s love of a whiskey sour, you need to try this with a local almond twist.  It won’t be your last one.  All of these are prepared and served by family members Jeremiah Willey and Katie Sperbeck.

With the second decision out of the way, it’s time to eat.  There are many ways to start here.  We recommend the Charcuterie Falcon Cage.  This is a multi-level presentation, and well done by our server and aspiring actor Lawrence Smith.  Next we enjoyed the Golden Age honey soy glazed Salmon and the 10 oz grilled New York with a buttery bacon relish.  On the side we had the Truffle French Fry Festa.  These plates are all meant to be shared, so they are all sliced and ready. These are the right portions for a group and invite the next selection.

There are also great side like broccolini spear, salads, herb rice and of course their amazing pizzas, like the Falcon Combination. The Willeys also own Gold Dust Pizza, so these are truly specialties you will enjoy.  There is even a Munchkin menu so all are welcome.

This is a fun and elegant experience and plan on taking your time and working through the menu.

Bonus, if you love Absinthe like I do, you need to treat your friends to this experience, where Absinthe (the legal stuff) drips over a sugar cube into your glass.  It is quite the presentation.

I have been seeing a lot of musicians and artists having a hard time attracting good attendance in venues post-COVID years. This is true for Modesto as well as New York, LA, and Europe. People have gotten into staying in and not going out as much. I encourage all of you out there to get out and keep things going. Things are better for us all right now, and we need to make them better. We need our fans to come down and keep it rolling. “The War of the Worlds” is the fabled Halloween episode of the radio series The Mercury Theatre on the Air directed and narrated by Orson Welles as an adaptation of H. G. Wells’s novel The War of the Worlds. It was performed and broadcast live on October 30, 1938 over the CBS Radio Network. The episode is famous for reputedly inciting a panic through it’s “breaking news” style and limited commercial interruptions which convinced some members of the listening audience who had tuned in late that a Martian invasion was taking place.

Youthful Fitness

There are stories and myths about the Fountain of Youth, although Ponce De Leon never found it. However, I’m here to provide you with some ways to maintain a youthful appearance. While we can’t stop the aging process, we can take steps to keep our youthful look. Feeling good on the inside reflects how we look and feel on the outside. So, exercising is great, but don’t stop there. Take additional steps to enhance the benefits. The biggest factor in maintaining a youthful appearance is time itself. Around 30 years ago, my mother gave my wife and me some valuable advice to start using face moisturizers at a young age, even when we didn’t need them. In our teens to early 20s, we began using them daily. It’s never too late to start using face moisturizers and taking care of your skin, but starting early in life may provide more benefits. Other contributing factors to a youthful appearance include not smoking, avoiding alcohol, and eating natural, unprocessed foods. Try to follow a diet that consists of foods available during the time of Christ, around 2000 years ago. In other words, if Christ didn’t eat a Big Mac, you shouldn’t either. Drinking enough water daily is another way to maintain a youthful glow. When our bodies are hy-

drated, our skin looks healthy and radiant. I personally drink around 12-8oz glasses of water per day. It all comes back to the basic lesson we learned in first grade: we are what we eat and drink, so keep it clean. Sun exposure can age your skin quickly, so remember to use sunscreen, avoid tanning beds, and limit direct sun exposure. One simple tip is to always remove your makeup before going to bed. I make sure to wash my face regularly throughout the day, especially after exercising. Each night, I spend around 10 minutes washing my face, exfoliating, brushing and flossing my teeth, and applying my night facial moisturizers. The key is to make time to take care of yourself. It’s important to try and get 8 hours of sleep each night, avoid stressful situations and toxic people, maintain a healthy weight, and exercise regularly. These are just a few antiaging tips I’ve learned over the years. At 55 years old, I’m a happy and healthy man who feels that I look better than ever before. You can achieve this too! Just prioritize your health, hygiene, and overall well-being, and you’ll reap the benefits at any age. Cheers to your health!

Travel the world at the 30th International Heritage Festival

on Oct. 7 at Modesto’s Graceada Park. Fun starts at 10 am with the opening ceremony at 11 am including a colorful parade of flags with participants in international dress. Opera Modesto’s Katie Overton will sing the National Anthem. “Betsy Ross” will make a special appearance. Children and families will experience music and dance from around the world, an audience participation dance demo, and an international fashion show. The Kids World craft area will feature various crafts and the popular passport learning color books for the children to collect stamps and stickers. The 30th International Heritage Festival showcases a kaleidoscope of international heritages from the local area and celebrates our shared American heritage. Multi-Family Bulky Item Program

Curbside Pickup

The City of Modesto is offering a Multi-Family Dwelling Bulky Item Pickup Program for residents living in apartment complexes and multiplexes. This program offers a convenient way to dispose of large bulky household items. You can schedule a pickup by contacting your property manager or owner, who will schedule the pickup with the solid waste company, or by contacting your solid waste company directly. The solid waste company will give you or your property manager a pickup date.

Please Note: Only place items out for pickup after 6:00 PM the evening prior to appointment date. Items must be placed in street, against the curb. Never place items in alleyways for any reason.

Haul - It - Yourself - Voucher Program

You can also haul the bulky items yourself. Contact your solid waste company to request a voucher, which will be held at the transfer station and are valid for seven days after issuance.

Bring a truck or trailer load of bulky items no larger than 4 ft x 4ft x 8ft.

Acceptable & Unacceptable Items

Acceptable Items Include: Mattresses, couches, chairs, tables, furniture, outdoor or patio furniture, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, microwaves

It is officially my favorite month.

I could go on and on about how beautiful Modesto is in the fall. The air is finally getting a little colder and crisp. Are you ready for the fall season? I know I am! What’s to like about T’ai Chi?

This month I thought I would ask one of our long time students how she got into T’ai Chi and find out What made her like this Chinese Martial Art. This is what she told me : “When I was young I was into Chinese Kickboxing. Boxing was my life. I participated in many competitions. Life was hard and I felt that Martial Arts was a good way to release that hardness, do something with it. I wanted to be strong and tough, be quick on my feet, defend myself.  It was a craving. At night I was dreaming about Martial Arts. One day I found out there was something called ‘Shadow Boxing’.  Another name for it is ’T’ai Chi Ch’uan’ which translates to Grand Ultimate Fist. I was determined to find out where I could learn

this kind of traditional Chinese Boxing with its gentle and circular movements.

I found a well known T’ai Chi Master, packed my bags and was heading to San Francisco. As I was driving I heard an ad on the radio about a school called ’T’ai Chi Ch’uan Academy of Modesto’.  I turned the car around and called the school. After talking to the Head Teacher I decided to try a class with him.  What perfect timing, I didn’t even have to commute to a T’ai Chi Class,  there were 2  qualified teachers right here in Modesto!  It was a time in my life when I wanted to learn more about myself, do something for my soul.  I  also wanted to learn the martial arts applications, the discipline and have a different state of mind. I loved feeling the energy and blood flow in my hands, legs and feet. I wanted a complete art that wasn’t just about slamming someone.  I appreciated learning about the connection between Chinese Medicine and T’ai Chi Ch’uan.  T’ai Chi is like Acupuncture without needles : I could, with regular practice, heal myself. I found that it helped me to lower my blood pressure and anxiety.  It gave me clarity of mind. I have been a student at the Modesto T’ai Chi Ch’uan Academy for 23 years. October is the month for all things spooky and one of the scariest things many face is the fight against breast cancer. There are incredible organizations and events in our community that highlight the bravery of survivors, fighters, and supporters to add some hope and love to the difficult journey. On October 5th at 6:00 PM, please join in at the Breast Health Fundraiser Dinner which supports Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and includes 3 course wine paired dinner at Surla’s, silent auction, and raffle prizes all for an amazing cause. On October 22nd at 9:00 AM please join the American Cancer Society and hundreds of supporters to walk the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of San Joaquin Valley in 10th Street Plaza.
