May the Force Be With You. It’s a whole new season. We are blasting through spring, it rained like crazy in April and even got some last-minute snow teasing. Here we are, on the precipice of summer, but before we get ahead of ourselves it’s May the 4th.

The Force and the 4th are so much more than one thing or one day; it is that special feeling knowing that we and our community are a part of something so much bigger. Many cities struggle with who they are and can be, but Modesto has so many pillars that position us above the fray.

Question is, what our history and culture can mean in terms of civic pride, economic development and so much more. How we embrace what makes us interesting is really what drives community pride, leads economic development and sets us apart from other cities. In marketing it’s the “Unique Selling Proposition”. Fundamentally, CEOs look for a place they like when starting or relocating a company. People need a sense of being and want to like where they live. Having the Star Wars and

American Graffiti culture has something for everyone, from comics to cars, family fun to cool cantinas, from the young to the old, to our hometown to galaxies far away.

This is a good thing Modesto. Hoboken had Frank Sinatra. Modesto has George Lucas, Royal Robbins, the Gallos, Dan Costa and more.

The question is, what will we do with it? What’s our “force”? How do we take our unique place in smart agriculture to keep our ag economy strong when we see what happens to companies like Del Monte. Who’s next? What’s our next innovation. Do we have the foundations in place?

Are we holding the organizations that are tasked with economic development accountable? Is Modesto easy to do business with? Do we have safe and well-lit streets and sidewalks, especially in downtown?

Are our parks ready and safe for families?

Are our schools delivering the education our kids need? Do we have a network of good jobs ready for kids who are finishing high school and may consider moving back to their hometown after college? Do

Happy Mother’s Day Modesto!

Moms and mother figures shape the heart of our community with their influence visible everywhere from the tree‑lined paths of Graceada Park to the bustling Saturday crowds at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market. Modesto’s moms are caregivers, but they’re also the entrepreneurs running

boutiques in McHenry Village and coffee shops in downtown, musicians rocking down the house, the nurses and medical staff supporting patients at local hospitals and doctors’ offices, farmers supporting the ag industry, and the educators guiding students through new technology in classrooms. Many juggle hybrid work schedules, care for aging parents, and still find time to cheer from the sidelines at Rainbow Fields or volunteer at the annual Love Modesto events or Soroptimist Christmas Tree. They pack lunches before sunrise, help with science projects late into the night, and organize family outings to the Gallo Center for the Arts or summer concerts in Mancini Bowl. They keep traditions alive whether it’s enjoying a (not-so) mini frozen yogurt cup at Yogurt Mill, taking spring photos among the almond blossoms, or gathering the family for a walk along Dry Creek. Mothers from new moms, grandmothers, foster moms, stepmothers, to the mother figures

who step in when needed are creating stability, culture, and connection. This Mother’s Day, we honor the parents who make Modesto thrive. May your day be filled with rest, gratitude, and the recognition you deeply deserve! Go Modesto Moms!

Over at the Art Gallery on Modesto Junior College East Campus, the student showcase ended April 28. New show is the Youth Art Collective and opens May 4 to 15. A reception and award presentation on May 15 at 5:30 PM. Youth In Bloom celebrates the creativity of Stanislaus County’s young artists through May 22 at the Stanislaus Arts Council Gallery. On display since March, Arts Council is hosting an artist’s Reception and Awards ceremony on May 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with the Awards presentation at 6:00 PM. Carnegie Arts Center will open the Ready Set Show kids’ student art May 29 to June 27. Students in grades K-12 submit their artwork for this annual non-competitive display of youthful talents.

Holdovers from April include the final month for Chella display at Kruse Lucas Gallery at 525 Tully Road. Valley Springs artist Brad Stone will open his 3-month Graffiti Summer special exhibit focusing on cars from different periods June, July, and August.

The Stanislaus State Art Galleries present a BFA graduating student exhibition May 7 to 29. Art Reception will be on May 14 at 6 PM. The Stan State Art Space part of this display and a partner on May 7 for Art Around Town in Turlock. Colossal Tattoo, Pink Duck Gallery, Gallery Finesse, Paper Moon Stationery and Art Supply, Rustic Roots all part of the venue roster anchored by the Carnegie Arts Center.

Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk is May 21. Check in with Visit Modesto and Arts Council for the roster of artists and open venues. Dragonfly Art for Life is always a good stop. LoFi is also a place to check during Art Walk. LoFi has other art events, as does Queen Bean with Modesto Artists Movement.

Last month Kaila Kindley opened the 1119 Gallery on April 10. Gallery gets its name from the address, 1119 Kansas Avenue Business Park. Regular hours will be Wednesday to Saturday, 5 PM to 8 PM. Recently Kindley won three awards in the MJC Student awards show.

Modesto Porchfest is this month and reminds me I will be working with art and musicians at the Pick and Gather festival in Livingston May 30 and 31, and the Riverdance Farms camping and U-pick event over Memorial Day Weekend. SONGWRITER VIEW Power to the Porch

It seems that music scenes and third spaces have always been dependent on businesses and consumerism. Cafés, bars, venues typically carry the responsibility to create places for art and culture to move forward.

Modesto Porchfest is unique in how it shifts the accountability outward, inviting the community to make spaces to perform and gather. When our people embrace this shift, the result is an award winning and joyous celebration of music and community.

On May 17, porches, patios, and driveways become a network of stages, like a city-wide music festival. Since 2017, Porchfest has been sowing collaboration between neighbors, artists, and music lovers. There’s no expectation for transaction, no requirement to buy a ticket or order a drink. The focus moves back to the music, friends, shared spaces and memories.

The movement between homes and neighborhoods is a core part of the experience.

Bicycle brigades follow the sound of music through the streets, with over 100 musical acts to explore. There’s a shared rhythm that carries people through the neighborhood, discovering new artists and connecting with familiar ones along the way. Porchfest is free, but it relies on mutual respect. When people open their homes, share their music, and create space for one another, it becomes a community in motion, built on trust, participation, and the understanding that what’s being created together is priceless.

GO MODESTO Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Greater Central Valley will take place this year at Johansen High School, 641 Norseman Dr,. Modesto, May 16th17th 6 am-6 am. Relay for Life is dedicated to raising funds for Cancer research, It is the only Global walk that stands for every cancer, they walk for every life.

Since 1985, communities across the world have come together to honor and remember loved ones and take action for lifesaving change. At Relay For Life, you’ll find community members taking turns walking a path or track lined with luminaria bags. You’ll have the opportunity to cheer for local survivors (or participate as a survivor yourself) in the first lap of the day. Caregivers of cancer patients (currently or previously diagnosed) will then be invited to join the Survivors. Local entertainers will keep you energized. As it gets dark, they will light the luminaria bags surrounding the track in a memorable luminaria ceremony. There will be opportunities to fundraise & fight back! Spring is in the Musical Air

May is upon us and Spring is in full bloom, with music and events kicking off on the first day of the month. May 1st First Friday returns to 10th Street with Taylor Made Band bringing music to the plaza. They are a rhythm and blues band with a full horn section and you will not want to miss them. Market starts at 5 pm, Music at 7 pm.

May 2nd TacoFest takes over Downtown with food, fun and music, including Los Reales del Norte, Dj’s, Ballet Folklorico, wrestling, and more. 11 am.

May the Fourth Be With You/Star Wars Day is celebrated every year in Modesto on May 4th in Downtown Modesto.

Horizon Point will be performing their Jedi set, the life size Tie-Fighter returns maybe for the last public appearance, Din Gogru/Baby Yoda, actors from the movies, lightsaber battle at dusk, Death Star Pinata and so much more fun. 5-9 pm Free, in the 10th Street Plaza.

Music in the Plaza officially kicks off with Neon Radio on the 8th, playing the hits and maybe a few misses from the 80’s.

This high energy band is a fan favorite and will take you back in time. On May 15th, The Mixtape is your 90’s Alt Rock powerhouse, bringing you some of the best from the last decade of the 20th Century. Don’t miss Red Pony Band, playing Americana, Soul and a bit of 60’s rock on May 22nd.

Modesto Softball: Aces, Monarchs,

Baseball as America’s pastime

has long been Modesto’s pastime too, with its newest iteration coming to fans of the sport with the Modesto Roadsters batting off in their inaugural home opener on May 19, 2026. Much as the Modesto Roadsters and the Pioneer Baseball League offer an alternative to standard baseball, Modesto’s baseball history has also included past alternatives to the regular pastime, with the rise of organized softball in the 1930’s as the game provided for community engagement and uplifted spirits during the Great Depression, and later served as an alternative to “hard” or regular baseball during World War II. While many teams were typically affiliated with local businesses, fraternal clubs, and community organizations, the local softball league provided an avenue for organized African-American teams, like the Modesto Aces and Modesto Monarchs, to compete as well.

Formally organized softball in Modesto was established when the Modesto Softball League was created in 1934, spearheaded by the 20-30 Club of Modesto, with its inaugural games taking place on July 25, 1934 at a field no longer standing that had been at the corner of Jefferson and Chestnut Streets. The League was a local and regional organization for recreational men’s and women’s softball amongst community groups and businesses, and early League teams from the 1930’s included the Modesto Irrigation District, Merry Garden Ballroom, Eagles Club, American Legion, Borden’s Milk, Hammond General Hospital, and the 20-30 Club. To further support the betterment of organized softball in Modesto, the Modesto Softball Association was formed in February 1939 during a meeting of team managers at the Hotel Hughson.

field at Enslen Park, and it was considered to be one of the best lighted and equipped fields in the state. The ball field lease was transferred to the Modesto Softball Association in May 1942, then was later formally turned over to the City in July 1943.

Although games during this period were also played at the Modesto Junior College field, it was at this park where the Modesto Monarchs and Modesto Aces played many of their games.

The Modesto Aces, likely Modesto’s first all African-American softball team, were first referenced in the Modesto Bee sports columns in July 1940, though they may have been an organized team prior to that, and were active through the mid-1940’s. The Modesto Monarchs too played throughout the 1940’s, with first reference in the Modesto Bee in April 1945. In their fourth season, following an exhibition game against the Iowa Ghosts, the Monarchs played in the Modesto Softball Association A League playoff series in August 1948 against the Salas Brothers-Moore Team. The three-game series lasted just two games, as the Modesto Monarchs were victorious in the first two games, becoming the 1948 MSA A League Champions. The Monarchs continued playing softball in Modesto through the mid-1950’s, and some players went on to join other teams in the MSA League which continued organized community softball in Modesto through the 1960’s.

With another baseball team now calling Modesto home, the Modesto Roadsters will be carrying on the longtime Modesto tradition of sports playing a key role in community building and uplifting morale.

Let this transition forward be both a time to celebrate Modesto’s sports future while also honoring Modesto’s recreational and competitive sports movements of the past.

Writing is connection, and poets and writers in Modesto are able to connect at deep and powerful levels thanks to so many literary offerings in town. The Modesto Artists Movement believes in the power of the written word and the stories, music, and movies they inspire.

Everything starts with a story, and we are writing ours every day. Writing doesn’t just transform an individual. Writing transforms a community. Imagine how different life becomes when you know someone else’s story. Empathy would rise. Understanding would increase. Love would abound. Good writing requires authenticity and vulnerability, and some of the best local writers can be found performing this month at Queen Bean Coffee & Social House.

If your goal is to write and connect with a great community of writers, then don’t miss Write Night this month: Wednesday, May 13, 6-9pm. This is a free community creative writing class where attendees get to write, reflect, share, and connect.

This month, thanks to the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center, we will get to hear from the next generation of poets on Wednesday, May 20, 5:30pm when the Stanislaus County’s Youth Poet Laureate brings an anthology of high school poetry to the Queen Bean for a reading and reception.

Then May culminates with the return of Poetry Slam (on Rye) on Wednesday, May 27, 7:30-9:30pm where a dozen poets compete for $250 in prizes. The audience gets to judge and poets have 3 minutes to read one original work! It’s not just a poetry reading.

It’s a poetry party.

BAR VIEW LEGENDS SPORTS GRILL

Mikey, Marques, Mike, Viola, Lucas and Jerome Neighborhood bars should bring people together, change the community and create new connections. The LaLoma Neighborhood has a new connection that will be a big positive to the area and will bring more people together.

Legends Sport is a whole new ball game (sorry, but it is). This part of town has always had challenges, but that’s what sports can solve and is haveing a postive impact. One look, and you see something is new, great open floor, super long bar, and literally walls of TVs. It’s more than just TV sports, its local sports, with memorabilia, and even a current player feature, this month featuring a local up and coming boxer, Nick Saavedera.

Legends is owned by local sports and karate expert Mike Duran, his wife Viola and managed by Lucas Woolman, whom I remembered from the Boardroom years ago, and he has mad craft cocktail skills.

This is an all ages space, and kid friendly and run by the family with sons Mikey and Marques. Jerome Ray runs the kitchen. It is good food friendly offering up burgers, wings, custom pizzas, and their Kick ‘n Taco truck for additional support. They even have a kids’ menu. In the back, you can find an arcade, with darts, Pacman, air

hockey and virtual bowling.

We had the meat lovers’ pizza, the Asian zesty wings, and the mondo Cali cheeseburger and a giant pretzel. Lots of meat, great spicy sauce and a burger that required skills to eat. Perfect for a group.

Now to the bar. Legends is so much more than a beer bar. Lucas is a master bartender and can deliver your most picky craft cocktail. We started with an Makers old fashioned and then went for a refreshing strawberry Mule. With good tunes on and TVs everywhere, it’s a good hang with Lucas. Before we tapped out, we had an espresso martini to get us going. They have a good top shelf, and we will be doing a lot more experimenting in the future, but you can get a quick Jameson ginger and be good. Oh yeah, loads of good beers, seltzers and wine.

Legends is open daily at 6 am except Mondays. Naturally, they will be open for Monday night football season. Thursdays are line dancing and expect bands on Saturday evenings. Modesto’s biggest concert is coming May 17.

This is truly a special day, with over 90 porches and more than 120 bands playing all over town. Best part is, you can ride your bike from porch to porch, hang out with your friend, enjoy food trucks and find some new music. Modesto has so much talent and all that is asked of you is: be cool, don’t block streets, tip the musicians and respect the porch host’s homes and yards. This is a special event and we can keep it going if it goes well. So get ready, check the map, plan your stops, or just go random.

The College area will be jumpin’ and loaded with bands. Don’t forget to cross over

Dry Creek and check out the porches in LaLoma. I happen to know that Edgebrook Dr has a good thing going so stop by, bring your chairs and pop-up tent for the park and close out the day with the Blue Line and Bangarang.

Odessa Johnston Tribute Odessa was born on April 26, 1939, in Greenville, South Carolina, during the time of segregation in the southern United States. After receiving her master’s degree from Columbia University, she traveled by train and arrived to Modesto at our local historic rail station in 1963.

She was hired as Modesto High School’s first African American teacher, teaching in business and typing. She was the only African American on staff when she was hired by Modesto Junior College in 1970, where she was as a counselor. In 1984, she worked to found the Modesto Institute for Continued Learning (MICL) so that area adults had the opportunity to continue learning through a higher education format.

In 1991, she was elected to the Modesto City Schools board of education and in 1999 was appointed as a University of California regent, where she advocated for a medical school to be included at UC Merced.

Odessa shared her story with the McHenry Museum & Historical Society in 2024 and is featured as an extraordinary woman in our 2025 publication, ‘StaniStory: Change and Continuity in Stanislaus County,’ by Keith Highiet and David Seymour.

Our thoughts are with her daughter, Sylvia, family. The products of Odessa’s tireless efforts in education continue to profoundly impact our community today.

Alfonso’s Mexican Grill

Modesto has great Mexican food heritage

So many places in so many neighborhoods. During the 60s and 70s, places like Carmen’s in McHenry Village were the place to go. Some of these families originally came from Burge’s Drive In and through Carmen’s, went on to start Marcella’s, Rick’s, Familia Juarez, Rosita’s, Familia Garcia and others Alfonso Lara was part of the Carmen’s team, learning from Joe Gomez, and today, the Lara family owns Alfonso’s in Ceres, now in the hands of Alfonso’s daughter Sally Lara and her brother Al, who has the family taste buds.

The recipes here are legit and you will immediately love the big red booths, old school bar and the smell of great food that will make you really hungry.

If you are a first timer, a couple of things you need to know. The Al’s Special Burrito is a must, and my friend Steve Perry says the shredded beef is 100% essential. So with that out of the way, we dove in. The shredded beef tacos are amazing and the Al’s special with the shredded chicken and the green sauce is worthy of Alfonso’s name, It was great to share history with Sally. Alfonso’s is celebrating 53 years in downtown Ceres. Opening in 1973, she started working in there in Jr High and still manages today been there today. Martha Lara encouraged Alfonso to go out start their own restaurant when he was at Carmen’s. When they were ready to open, “Cip” Duran of Carmen’s, helped them start and wished them well. It was all family, even filling their first cash register and supplying equipment.

It is said that the Tapatia was “invented” at Carmen’s and it’s on the menu and we tried it. Tasty salad over a variety of fillings on a tortilla. We next enjoyed the chicken fajitas. The chicken is so tender and grilled with peppers with rice & beans. Of course we had to have the combo plate #5 with a taco and enchilada in red sauce. Wow. There is so much more to try, like the New York steaks and camerones. Next time I am trying the Con Queso New York Steak.

There is a great bar with comfy stools in the dining room and this is a place to hang out with friends. Look for a new Happy Hour inspired by their 53 Anniversary. Don’t forget a special Margarita. They make all of their own sauces and salsa and the chips are house made as well.

Alfonso passed in 2013 and Martha is still going, checking on the restaurant regularly. Sally and Al love the friendship that greets them daily and with their customers and many have been regulars for decades. Now it’s time for the next generation to discover Alfonso’s. If you have not tried Alfonso’s, put it on you’re your schedule soon.

Note: I learned about Alfonso’s when they had Alfonso’s El Castille on Yosemite, the former Cote D’Oro/Fusco Castle with the speakeasy tunnel connections. Sadly that building is gone now, but the trip to Ceres is easy at 4th and Lawrence.

Baseball is back in Modesto

and we are in for a fun ride. Davenport Iowa based Dave Heller has brought some big league fun to the Modesto. With the departure of our former team, the ball park was not empty for long. We now welcome the fun and quirky Pioneer League to Modesto. The league has a fun image and is a place for more up and comers to play ball, as well as some on their way down who still have it. After a very public name selection process, the team landed on the Modesto Roadsters. I was very helpful and hopeful that we would have a Graffiti-themed name.

When they announced the name, Dave appeared in a ’61 Corvette Roadster, now the official car of the mascot, Cruiser Kit Fox. To make it even more fun, our new rival will be the Oakland Ballers, who’s owners include Too $hort and Billy Joe Armstrong. I can see a Green Day battle of the bands in our future. Needless to say, this will be an exciting first season, opening May 19. Let’s meet Dave Heller.

ModestoView: Why Modesto?

Dave Heller: I’ll confess, I’ve really fallen hard for Modesto and the Central Valley.

What I saw from a distance was certainly attractive – our ideal market is full of working families looking for fun, affordable family-friendly entertainment because that’s exactly what we provide. And I love the fact that this wonderfully diverse area is chock full of vibrant cultural programs, festivals, galleries and big mark-your-calendar must-see events, especially as they relate to cars and music. But coming here and seeing it up close, what has really impressed me is the people. They are not provincial at all; everyone has been so welcoming and inviting. I don’t know what the legal residency requirement is in California, but in Modesto and across the Central Valley it feels like it’s about five minutes!

MV: How will a night at a Modesto Roadsters baseball game be different from a night at a Modesto Nuts game?

DH: When I was considering bringing professional baseball back to Modesto, the knock on the area was that the community had failed the team; it had not supported the Nuts in large enough numbers to allow the club to be economically viable. But when I toured John Thurman Field, I realized that it was the team’s ownership that had failed the community, not the other way around. They let the ballpark to a point where many people no longer wanted to come. They refused to be generous deteriorate philanthropically. Worse, they just got greedy – and started gouging their customers. Ten dollars to park? Ridiculous. Seven dollars for a 16-ounce Coke? Fourteen dollars for a beer? Give me a break. Every Roadsters game starts with free parking. A Coke is just $4. And you can get a beer for as little as $5.00 – even less, just $3.00 on Thirsty Thursdays. And tickets start at just $3 on Thursdays. We’re going to show our guests a great time at a great price.

MV: You got into baseball ownership almost by accident. What made you love the sport?

DH: When I was a young boy, I told my Dad I wanted to see a pro baseball game.

We were living in southern Connecticut, so he took me to a Mets game. We watched Tom Seaver take a no-hitter into the 9th inning. He didn’t get the no-hitter, but it was

exciting as anything I’d seen live. I was on the edge of my seat. From that point on, I was hooked!

MV: This is a family project for you. How has the support of your family helped your teams grow and be successful?

DH: My oldest son was born shortly after I bought my Quad Cities club; ever since, he and his brother have been my target demographic. If we do things that create memories for my kids, we’ll probably create memories for your kids, too. Ideas such as the Mega Candy Drop, where we fill a helicopter with a thousand pounds of candy, then drop the candy from the helicopter all over the outfield after the game. Once the candy hits the ground, the children run out and pick up as much candy as they can.

Meanwhile, the helicopter comes back and we pack it with a thousand pounds of giant marshmallows. Then the helicopter drops the marshmallows all over the children; the kids look up with this great sense of wonder as if to say, “Mom! Dad! It’s raining marshmallows!” My boys loved the Candy Drop and I’m betting big time that Central Valley kids will, too. This year, we’re not only doing two Mega Candy Drops, we’re going to do a giant cash drop. It’ll be a ton of fun!

MV: You have won awards for both team performance and ballpark experiences, what is your special sauce?

DH: Simple. I tell our team all the time,

“We’re not in the baseball business. We’re not in the entertainment business. We are in the memory-making business, and if we can create a fun, lasting memory for a Central Valley kid, then we’ve really accomplished something with our day.”

Listen, people work hard for their money.

Inflation is real. Gas prices are ridiculously high. So are the prices in the grocery store.

Families could use a break. We have 51 opportunities this year to give them great food and drink at very reasonable prices while showing them an awesome time.

And we’ll even sweeten the deal – with a bobblehead giveaway (premium giveaways every Saturday night) or a free t-shirt (every Wednesday) or an awesome fireworks show (every Friday). Or we will help you save money ($3 tickets and $3 beers every Thursday). Life is hard. Fun is easy. And we’re offering Big Fun at a very affordable price.

MV: What makes the Pioneer League fun and how is it different from MLB-affiliated teams?

DH: The Pioneer League is an innovative league. If the game is tied after 9 innings, we don’t play extra innings; we go straight to a home run derby to decide the outcome. It’s fun and fan-friendly. We’re an experimental league; we’ll try out ideas and help Major League Baseball see what works and what does not. And we play to win.

ant. But if a pitcher doesn’t have it, the club may want to see how he works himself out of a jam. In the Pioneer League, if a pitcher doesn’t have it, the manager will immediately pull him out and bring in someone else. Because we are focused on winning.

MV: You had open tryouts earlier this year, did any players make the cut?

DH: Yes! We had an incredible turnout at our open tryout, and the talent level was way beyond what we’d expected. When it was all over, we signed four players. All of them will have an opportunity to make the team’s final roster at Spring Training. To see a player like Treven Crowley, who was born in Modesto and played at Modesto Junior College and Fresno State finally get the chance to play in his home city at the professional level is pretty special.

MV: How can people in Modesto connect with the Modesto Roadsters and get involved?

DH: There are so many ways to connect with this team – in fact, you can literally welcome a Roadsters player into your home as part of our Host Family Program!

We have a robust partnership platform for local businesses, and we want to see everyone at Modern Woodmen Field engaging and interacting with this team on a regular basis. Every Sunday, we have pre-game player autographs and there are player-focused events throughout the year.

One of the many benefits of not being affiliated is that we can provide our guests with unprecedented access to our players and coaches – because I sign their paychecks, not some distant major league accountant who’s never been to Modesto. That’s how we’re building a lasting community bond with the team.

MV: What do you think about school game and other events like concerts at Modern Woodmen Field?

DH: Camp days to scout sleepovers, kids’ baseball clinics (taught by J.T. Snow!), and a full promotion schedule that offers something for everyone. The beautiful thing is we can also look to welcome other community groups and their events; I expect it won’t be long before car shows and concerts become tentpoles of our annual schedule at the ballpark.

MV: How great will the season be with JT Snow at the helm?

DH: On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say about a 17! J.T. is the real deal. He’s a baseball lifer, a 6-time Gold Glove winner and a major league star who always respected the game and played it with passion and purpose. I have so enjoyed getting to know him and work with him; I’m proud to call him my friend. He will have the Roadsters playing FOLLOW US:

the game the right way, and I’m confident we’re going to win a lot of games. I’m excited for the people of the Central Valley to get to know him!

MV: Many of your other ball parks have a fun zone, like amusement park rides. Are you going to try to create a fun zone in Modesto?

DH: Definitely! Two of the many things that make Modesto such an attractive market are the fact that there is no amusement park anywhere near here and that the weather is warm most of the year. I built the only amusement park within a ballpark anywhere, and I did it in a very weather-challenged environment in Davenport, Iowa. It would be so much more fun to do it in a place like Modesto, where there are a lot more people in the region and the weather is so much better. But those amusement rides are really expensive; a new Ferris wheel runs nearly $4 million.

So we need to find the right setting and the right environment to do it – and then it’s on us not only to make it successful but to make it a model for places all over this great country.

MV: If money was no object, what would your dream experience be for the Modesto Roadsters.

DH: If money was no object? I’d love to build a ballpark where each seat was shaded and each row had its own misting system, so people never got uncomfortably hot. And, of course, there would be a big splash pad so the children could stay cool, too – and have water cannon fights! I’d also add a family rollercoaster and thrill rides for the kids so they could watch baseball for a while, then go off and ride the rides and have a great time there, too. And everything would be super affordable, so kids from every part of the county, regardless of how much money your family has, could go to the games and have a great time. I never want anyone to feel left out.

MV: You are a public and well-known person, what is something that people around here may not know about you?

DH: That I love, love, love gummy bears!

It’d just hard to be angry when you’re eating gummy bears. They’re so delicious and so much fun to eat! I think that’s why we love to give away candy at the ballpark.

A reporter asked me when I first came to town if the kind of promotions we do at my other ballparks would work in Modesto and I responded, “I don’t know. Do the kids in the Central Valley like candy?” I’m betting they do!

MV: What are you looking forward to most with the Modesto experience?

DH: I think one of the most meaningful parts of owning a team in Modesto is Follow the View Crew on Threads @modestoview

learning just how much this community cares about the success of this team and baseball in the area. The community has been so welcoming and supportive from the very beginning, and that means the world to me. I can’t wait to welcome people to Modern Woodmen Field for our home opener on Tuesday, May 19th. They’re going to look at what used to be John Thurman Field and be blown away at how completely different it all looks. That look of amazement – “How’d they do that?” – is something we’re all looking forward to.

MV: You and I share a fondness for Brit Mod music. Which song from The Jam really speaks to you?

DH How about “Tales from the Riverbank.” It opens with a slow-building, rolling bass line. Then a slightly sinister electric guitar starts plucking at your senses as the song’s dream-like quality induces reverie featuring pastel fields and softly flowing streams. And who can argue with Weller’s lyrics? “Now life is so critical, life is too cynical. We lose our innocence, we lose our very soul. True, it’s a dream mixed with nostalgia. But it’s a dream that I’ll always hang on to, that I’ll always run to.” Maybe my dreams are also mixed with a little nostalgia, but they’re dreams I’ll always run to.

MV: My traditional question we ask to all of our interviews is, and we know you are a big fan of Paul Weller and the Jam; what’s your call, Beatles or Stones?

DH: On this question, we at the Roadsters are a house divided. I love many Beatles songs, especially later Beatles. Our great General Manager, Michael Neis, who shares my passion for creating memories for our guests, is a huge Beatles fan. Ask him this question and he’ll tell you that the Beatles from 1963 to 1970 grew from “Please Please Me” to “Let it Be”; a level of stylistic evolution that may never be matched. He would not only pick the Beatles as a band; he would argue, quite passionately, that much of their solo work is also better than what the Stones have put out.

But that’s him. I Iove the raw rhythm, attitude and swagger of the Stones. Few pushed non-conformity while challenging the status quo both lyrically and musically as well and as far as Jagger and Richard.

Add to that the incredible energy and electricity of a live Stones show (the Beatles stopped touring way back in 1966) together with their ability to stay together while continually evolving and their unique ability to fuse the blues with rock and produce anthemic music … for me, it’s the Stones by a whisker in a true battle of the heavyweights!

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU...

Modesto is the home of Star Wars and there is no better way to get May off to a hyperspace start. Star Wars in Modesto is so much more than just May the 4th, it’s a sense of being, that we are part of the story.

There is a sense of pride that every Modestan needs to feel when you see Star Wars, or walk through the Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland, when you think that all of this came from the mind of a Downey High Grad, a local rally car racer, an MJC student who ended up at USC film school who changed the film industry forever. Yes, Modesto, we are proud to be the home of George Lucas. From the opening seconds of Star Wars, A New Hope, opening at the Briggsmore Theatre in 1977, we knew movies would never be the same.

The perfect way to start your May is at the State Theatre where you can see the original trilogy right in a row, two days in a row. Star Wars A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and the Return of the Jedi. If you know someone that has not seen Star Wars, make it your project to get them into the club.

Did you know?

Star Wars exists today because American Graffiti was a hit. If Graffiti had flopped, Lucas might not have had the credibility or the funding to make Star Wars the way he did. Can you imagine a movie landscape without Star Wars? One more reason to love American Graffiti.

The Original Trio

The State Theatre will be showing the original trilogy on May 2nd and 3rd. You can watch the film that started it all, A New Hope, and the Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi in a row. Make a day out of it and the State will have some Star War themed cocktails.

May the 4th is special to Modesto USA and Modesto is the home of George Lucas. Every Modestan should feel special. The ModestoView team rallied the City of Modesto to issue the first official city proclamation that designated May the 4th as a commemorative day and since then the fun grows each year.

Celebrated on May the 4th, ModestoView, SPWG, Collins Electric, and Assemblyman Obi Juan Alanis and our community will be celebrating in 10th St Plaza from 5- 9 pm.

May the 4th is a free family event featuring droids, stand ups, photo ops, cosplay, X wing fighter, Millennium Falcon cockpit, face painting, vendors and more.

Special this year will the return of the life size Tie Fighter. This huge spaceship will allow visitors to sit in the cockpit thanks to our friends at Gemperle Farms. Word is that this will be the last public display for the giant Tie Fighter so don’t miss it.

Andrew Nelson, who spent more time in the Darth Vader suit than any other actor, and David Gonzales, who portrayed Ak-Rev in the 1997 special edition of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi are scheduled to join. Don’t miss a special meet and greet with Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) There will be a special Death Star Pinata and music from Modesto’s Star Wars band Horizon Point and more special guests and awards to be announced.

The highlight of the evening is the block long lightsaber battle at dusk.

Following the battle, the Brenden will be showing Space Balls at 9 pm.

Guest are encouraged to dress as their favorite character and bring their lightsabers.

Look for a special Star Wars drink menu at Fuzio Bistro.

Modesto baseball will never be the same again.

For nearly 100 years, baseball has been played over on the west side. Back in the Del Web field days, later renamed as John Thruman field, baseball has been part of Modesto’s fabric. There were even World Series practice games in 1962, chronicled by local author Ken White in his book Getaway Day (QR Link to order) and star major league players that played in Modesto over the years on their way to the major league.

Now a new era in baseball begins as a new Pioneer League team will take the field. This is a new fun league that attracts a new kind of ball player that really wants to play, and possibly get discovered for bigger action. Giants fans are happy that 6-time Golden Glove winner JT Snow is the Roadster Manager.

Following a city-wide naming contest, and a very public re-doe, team owner Dave Heller announced the new Modesto Roadsters in a ’61 Corvette at the Graffiti USA Museum. Dave has the successful Quad Cities River Bandits in Iowa, the Billings Mustangs in Montana, the Wilmington Delaware Blue Rocks and the Lowell Spinners FOLLOW US:

People like beautiful flowers and is a blessing strolling in your garden. The music continues downtown and wherever inspiration takes us. Come on down and support music and the arts in the downtown.

Blue Monday party continues at Café Urbano the fourth Monday in May. Every month has a guest artist, and the band features John Adey Bass, Cortez Flores Drums, John Burt on Sax and your host eric Benson on Keys. The band plays R & B, Funk and Motown for listening and dancing with a great 6-piece Band.

National Poetry Month

will have passed by the time you read this… but that’s no reason not to support local poets all year long! Second Tuesday Poetry, sponsored by the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center returns on Tuesday, May 12 @ 7pm at Bookish (doors open at 6:30pm).

May’s featured readers are Gustine-based Kathy Pon and Chris Olander, poet laureate emeritus of Nevada City, followed by an open mic. This event continues to be packed, all-ages, varied themes and good for the soul.

This month, Bookish is welcoming authors with local ties – come check out the discussion on Body Image and Disordered Eating Across the Lifespan with Signe Darpinian and Wendy Sterling on May 8 at 6pm. The authors will discuss relationships between our bodies and food, offering “practical, compassionate guidance” for people and families. Signe, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS), is the author of Raising Body Positive Teens and A Woman’s Guide to Menopause, Body Image and Emotional Well-Being at Midlife,

among other titles.

Wendy, an Eating Disorder Expert and Sports Dietician, will have her books How to Nourish Yourself through an Eating Disorder and How to Nourish your Child through an Eating Disorder available for purchase as well.

PERFORMING VIEW

This is when we start to get the sneak peaks about the new performing arts season, but let’s pay attention to this current season as there are loads of wonderful performances in May and some fundraisers to keep our performing arts “performing”. Two big comedians hit town this month with Chelsea Handler at the Gallo on May17 and Adam Corolla at the State on May 16. Let’s laugh, we need it.

The Modesto Symphony turned 95 and the hits keep on coming with a full performance of Carmina Brana on May 8th and 9th backed up by the MSO Chorus. Later in the month, the Symphony goes Jurassic as you can enjoy the full feature film while the symphony plays the soundtrack on May 29th and 30th.

Since 1992, tales of Albers Road,

sad vacant lots, El Caminos, Levitz, the Modesto Inn, local skate parks, canals, chartsngrafs, crystal lakes, humanoids and more have been brought to life by Grandaddy. Formed in Modesto in 1992, with Jason Lytle, Aaron Burtch, Tim Dryden, Jim Fairchild and Kevin Garcia, the band initially broke through with 1997’s Under the Western Freeway. In 2000, they released the critically acclaimed Sophtware Slump that was loaded with hallmark songs like the ethereal He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot, the rockin’ Chartsngrafs, Miner at the Dial a View and the incredible So You’ll Aim for the Sky. This album was compared to Radiohead’s OK Computer, but Sophtware is better in my opinion. Through the late 90s and 2000s, Grandaddy played globally with an international following. In 2001, Grandaddy won the Best Alternative band at the Modesto Area Music Awards.

Modesto was fortunate to have a Grandaddy show at the Prospect Theatre in 2016 just before a new tour when bassist and vocalist and founding member Kevin Garcia tragically passed away from a stroke.

Tour plans and a concert in Modesto were cancelled and the future of Grandaddy was in doubt and his fellow bandmates were crushed. Time has passed and the songs have come back to life. Jason Lytle has remade Sophtware on a piano, toured with orchestras in Europe and last year, Grandaddy hit the road again on a sold-out tour in 2025 with supporting musicians, Nik Freitas, Jim Putnam and Jason Steady.

Now, the tour picks up a second leg with a special homecoming show at the Gallo Center on May 31.

If you are a long-time fan and missed them, it’s a beautiful homecoming. If you have never seen them, this show is required. You will be amazed, become a fan, and hope that this new chapter lasts for a while.

The Lantern

What is it to be conscious?

Scientists, philosophers, theologians, and countless others have pondered this question for centuries. But do we know any more about consciousness today than we did long ago? Does this question – what is it to be conscious – even matter?

I believe the key question is actually not so much what consciousness is, but how we experience it. What is it to be here now – alive in this moment?

I was reminded of this question just the other day on my morning walk to the park. I started out with my mind entangled in its usual web of worried thoughts, busy plans, and lingering problems, one immediately following the other. However, as I reached the park’s edge, my attention began to relax and open. Now aware of the trees shimmering in light, their leaves casting shadows that trembled and swayed, the sparrows all singing brightly – I was suddenly a dance partner in the springtime jazz.

In his recently published, delightfully accessible book, The World Appears, Michael Pollan (citing the work of psychologist Alison Gopnik) describes two primary modes of consciousness, one being like a

“spotlight”, and the other a “lantern”. When in spotlight mode, we narrow our focus to a particular topic or concern, often a problem to solve. This mode of thinking is clearly invaluable, as there are many problems needing our attention. If used excessively, though, it can become a problem in itself. We become prone to being chronically stressed, emotionally detached, irritated, discouraged, sad.

However, in the so-called lantern mode, our minds open and expand – like my moment in the park. Illuminated with a kind of 360 degree awareness, the world appears as playful, wonderous, even child-like. Our senses now vibrant and alive, we become like explorers of an unknown world, discovering everything as new.

It is this world to where the magnificent Irish philosopher and poet, John O’Donogue invited us to return, the world of our own awareness, when he wrote, “Awaken to the mystery of being here and enter the quiet immensity of your own presence. Have joy and peace in the temple of your senses.”
