Wow, it’s May, and it’s time to get ready for a busy summer as we enjoy the last month of spring. Putting this issue together, it’s crazy how much there is to do, how much we can gather, how much we can volunteer
and how much we can do to make sure our family, our community, and our workplaces are moving in the right direction. Spring freshens up everything and we can take advantage of how we make, or remake ourselves. We can’t control the world at large, but we can make sure things are just, fair and positive in our community and make our voices heard.
I officially passed the Beatles milestone and turned 64. I am grateful that my family apparently still needs me and will still feed me, when I’m 64. Actually, I feel refreshed at 64 and I am always looking forward to the next adventure with our grandkids, or what new band will pop up and enjoy a new restaurant or coffee shop. There is truly a Beatles song for nearly every stage of your life and most all of your feelings. More than any other group, their music fills my soul and my grandson is playing the drums along with my guitar
or piano, just like Ringo. Now he has a harmonica, just like John. These are great times and magic moments. Can’t wait for our little ones to start a jam with us. My batteries get charged up when we are out and about. One of the things that Rebecca and I really enjoy is going to dinner and a movie and we have great choices, from the historic State, to the downtown Brenden or the IMAX at Galaxy and you realize how important movie houses are to a community core. The ebb and flow of people going to shows, movies and stage performances is healthy, just like the tide, and we need to make sure that our downtowns are safe, well lit and welcoming so that this daily migration can happen. It’s more than just a movie, it’s the breathing of our community. I am grateful to my friend Saul Trujillo at Brenden who enables us to do the things we do in Modesto like Music in the Plaza, May the 4th, Rockin’ Holiday and so much more. I interview him in this issue.
Speaking of movies, for the next few months, there are two movies that are important to Modesto USA. Star Wars changed the world, and we have our May the 4th Celebration in 10th St Plaza on from 4-6 May 4th. Don’t miss the blocklong light saber battle at dusk. See our feature in this issue for the schedule and line up. Then we are revving our engines to celebrate American Graffiti as we welcome people from around the world to Modesto to enjoy our classic car culture, no matter what you drive. These are important things that we can build on, like we are doing with the Graffiti USA Museum, celebrating Modesto’s car, film, Lucas and pop culture contributions. It is already a community
gathering place. The economy is weird, but we still need your support to help us build.
Our “Let’s Build a Lobby” campaign is on now, and we would like you to team up. If you have mad skills or want to donate, please contact me or the museum. www. graffitiusamuseum.com
We receive so many great comments from people about how they count on ModestoView for knowing what’s going on in our community and being a positive voice. We are here for our local business and our local people that work hard to make a difference. I case you didn’t know, ModestoView is the largest monthly magazine in our region, by far, in print, and on the socials @modestoview. We work hard to embrace and recognize those in our community that are more innovative and do things better and try to learn, collaborate and connect to make it all work together. We never stop learning, and we want to make sure we are the resource you want us to be. If there are things we can do better, or are missing, please let me know at chrism@modestoview.com
For our family, all of this revolves around our family-owned company Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group, that’s part of the important food supply chain. We get involved at the local and national level to help make sure the food supply chain is strong and safe. Our team is amazing, and we work hard to make sure we have the best people and take care of them. We have our third generation in place and the fourth is a year and a half old. I am grateful to my father-in-law Mike McNulty who started this company in 1987 with his partner Roy Atkins. We are a local business that works hard to support other local business and we encourage our other local businesses to link up, and make sure we create a strong community, and support each other. That’s how we all, and Modesto win.

Now, more than ever, we need to make sure that we are serving our community, friends and colleagues with a clear sense of good and understanding. Empathy is the key for our communities to make better decisions and improve the places we live and work. Rotary and other service clubs are a great way to better our city. The Rotary Four-Way test should be a solid way for us all to work together. Simple really.
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? https://www.modestorotary.org/

Everyone knows someone that has had cancer. Whether it is yourself, a loved one, you parents or kids, it is one of the most frightening things and it’s good to have research and a support system. Relay for Life is a way to make fundraising fun and bring the community together so this year it’s a Carnival. Is it the Cotton Candy? Or is it the games? Maybe it’s the FUN, you can have at the Carnival.
That’s right on May 17th, 9 am to May 18, 9 am, the Carnival is coming to Johansson High. Look out for more details coming soon and make sure you sponsor a memory or a walker or come out and walk yourself all night long. www.relayforlife.org/stanislausca
season is on, so take yourself and your family to the ball game. The Modesto Nuts are on a roll and you know there is nothing better than local baseball. Who wants to worry about the major leagues when you can go out to John Thurman Field and enjoy local baseball, the way it is supposed to be? Home game stands this month are against San Jose May 1-4, Visalia May 13-18, and Rancho Cucamonga May 27-30.

It is amazing that it is already graduation time for our area seniors. Many have received their college acceptance letters and many have a new vocational path or other continued education. College grads may have job offers or will continue their education. We celebrate those who are bridging to Kindergarten, or high school. ModestoView wishes all the best to students and their future. Remember, keep reading, keep writing, keep learning and stay firmly planted in the real world with your friends and family. The world is waiting.

Will sadly note the passing of local artist Andrew Walther on April 6. Andrew grew up in the Wood Colony area, and I was asked to help with his final show, which took place in early March at Hart Ransom Elementary School. A show based on his Covid Creations, which was quite successful and fun for both the artist and the students.
For over a decade, we have waited for something to go in to the old Starbucks on the corner of 10th and K. There’s been a lot of work to bring the popular Con Azucar Café and bakery with giant conchas and exotic coffees like Café de Olla to Modesto, and the waiting has been the hardest part. They have many locations in California and it will be good to finally have this long-vacant space operating. It will be a nice fresh addition to downtown Modesto. Grand opening is scheduled for May 17 and there are soft open hours now. Check here for info: https:// conazucarcafe.com/ @conazucarcafe

The first documented Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States took place in Columbia, California, in 1862. The celebration was a spontaneous event that occurred after news of the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla reached the gold mining town, giving rise to “Cinco de Mayo, an American Tradition.” You can celebrate in Columbia State Park on May 3rd and 4th between 10:30 am and 5 pm.
If you’d like to celebrate closer to home, several events are taking place in and around Modesto throughout the weekend.

Did you know that May is National Preservation Month, a time to celebrate history and honor our community landmarks? Understanding and commemorating the history of Modesto matters because it connects the Modestans of today to the achievements and events of our city’s past. Efforts by city leaders, property owners, and historians alike to support historic preservation and the protection of significant sites are worth honoring as we all celebrate the Mayor and City Council’s proclamation of Historic Preservation Month in May 2025 taking place on May 6th!
The Landmark Preservation Commission was established by the Modesto City Council in 1988 to identify, protect, and honor our city’s unique and significant resources. The Commission today continues with its responsibility of advising the City Council on the recognition of our city’s surviving landmarks for future generations. These significant sites, whether officially designated landmarks or not, have wonderful stories to tell and deserve to be celebrated as the immense sources of civic pride and appreciation that they are. As Modesto experienced throughout the mid-20th Century, redevelopment and downtown improvement efforts often came at the expense of losing historic structures. Many of these lost buildings took with them irreplaceable architectural designs

and cultural connections to the past. Their absence highlights the great value of the City’s designated landmarks, and underscores the importance of encouraging proactive participation with the City’s Landmark Preservation Program to continue honoring our city’s unique history and architectural heritage.
In the words of Former Mayor Peggy Mensinger as written in May 1984, “Here in Modesto we lost much of our earliest construction when it seemed…demolition was the best way to meet modern building codes. Given another chance, we might decide to rescue some structures worthy of restoration, and the community might well have been richer as a result.” The highlighting of historical figures, architecture, and cultural sites can have an immense impact on the power of placemaking. Preservation of Modesto’s historical buildings, and appreciation of our city’s history, can help to create an attractive community where people are proud to live and prosper personally and professionally. The rehabilitation of older structures and the preservation of Modesto icons will only serve to make our city more vibrant and our community stronger.
So with May 2025 being proclaimed as Historic Preservation Month by the Mayor and City Council on May 6th to celebrate National Preservation Month, I invite you to celebrate, learn, and rediscover the stories, people, and places that make up Modesto’s diverse and fascinating legacy.
Dan Vallerand is a beloved figure in Modesto’s indie music scene, known for his heartfelt lyrics, offbeat humor, and a prolific catalog that spans over 15 years. A former host of the Queen Bean Open Mic and winner of the 2016 Modesto Area Music Award for Best Singer/Songwriter, Vallerand has cultivated a following with his unique blend of sincerity, satire, and vulnerability.
A songwriter and spaghetti enthusiast, Danny V’s latest EP, My Purest Heart For You (Probably), is a four-track collection centered around the theme of love in its many forms. The idea for the project arose the same week he submitted a cover to the New York indie label Toadstool Records for their 777 Love Songs compilation. With one song already in hand and a long-held desire to re-record another, the EP began to take shape—part nostalgia, part necessity. “I’m getting older and sitting on too much stuff,” Vallerand says.
The opening track, “I Am Cooler Than Your Boyfriend!”, is a tongue-in-cheek anthem brimming with playful bravado and cheeky pop culture references. It's a perfect example of Vallerand’s knack for being playfully candid and winking at his confessions.
By Mattéa Overstreet
In contrast, “A Heart Whose Love is Innocent” offers poetic lyrics and a gentle arrangement that reflect on the purity of hopeful love. With an added breath of melancholy, “Valentine”—written when Vallerand was just 17—dives into the waters of unrequited affection. The song captures the ache of longing while keeping a smile behind the sadness.
Closing out the EP is “Not Worth It,” a song that stitches three separate ideas into one emotional arc about futile relationships. With a structure that builds excitement toward a final chorus, the song reminds us of Vallerand’s early songwriting style—but with a maturity and refinement that reveals just how far he’s come. Fans who purchase the EP on Bandcamp are treated to a bonus collection of archival recordings, including live versions of songs from 2009, 2012, and 2017, as well as a lo-fi phone demo from 2020. These tracks offer a glimpse into Vallerand’s evolution as a songwriter and his enduring DIY spirit. My Purest Heart For You (Probably) is available on all major streaming platforms. Vallerand is currently working on several projects, including a T. Rex covers album with fellow musician Micah Van Zandt, a long-awaited full-length album, and the resurrection of a lost EP.

It’s safe to say that everyone likes Mexican food. Chips, salsa, traditional and Americanized entrees. Of all the dishes, there is just something amazing about an enchilada. It’s complicated, requires a great sauce, excellent fillings, cheese, corn tortillas and here in America, traditionally baked. It takes the right blend of sauce and tortilla firmness to really bring it home so they are not soggy. For some, a simple cheese enchilada is where it’s at and others need a combo. For some, enchiladas are saved for celebrations. The ViewCrew spread out across our community to seek out some great enchiladas so let’s check them out.

Petra and Tony Juarez have been at the helm of Familia Juarez since 1988. This is truly a family business all operated by family. Tony was originally at Carmen’s and now you can get many of those flavors at Familia Juarez. Located on Paradise Rd, (right behind Paradise Donuts, another ViewCrew fave) it is a full service sit down, traditional restaurant, with comfy booths with walls covered with family celebrations. Now, the chicken enchilada is really good. Nice chunky chicken inside with a special cheese sauce covering well-cooked tortillas. Not a soggy bite in the whole plate and each bite was delicious. You can get 2 or 3 for your entrée and beans and rice are included, with a bit of salad. Also of note, the salsa is on point, with nice tomato chunks and spices that give a nice snap to the lunch. Of course, you need a cold beer to match up. Enjoy.

Mix n match is always a specialty at Javi’s. Many dishes allow choice of meats and sauces. The view recently came across their Crema sauce. Pretty mind blowing, combo of creamy/ cheesy/chile creating a velvety smooth sauce with a little kick. Manager, Byant Montanez, says “It’s one of the more popular dishes for enchiladas, mostly with chicken”. The second most popular arrangement is with shrimp, which was what the view had. A truly unique spin on classic enchiladas, and worth a try. Luckily there are a few Javi’s to visit; 118 E. Monte Vista Ave., Turlock, 8394 Lander Ave., Hilmar, 136 N. My first time trying mole sauce on chicken enchiladas was an experiment my taste buds will forever thank me for. The sauce had a perfect balance of smoky chili heat, bittersweet chocolate, and warm spices, elevating the slow-roasted chicken and melted cheese to the next level. Oh, I’ll definitely be back to El Cazador.

The first work that comes to mind at El Ranchito after a Margarita, is camerones. These have been a house specialty for years and our search for enchiladas delivered some amazing treats. El Ranchito offers a variety of enchiladas, but we locked in on the Shimp and Crab enchiladas. The sauce is amazing and the tortillas are firm and when you slice them up, deliver great bites of spicy shrimp and a smooth buttery crab taste. Maybe we can get a shrimp and crab combo next time? One more margi please!

Enchiladas on-the-go from La Morenita! My special “go to” place for the best Mexican food around! Because the weekend always finds me very short of time, I have to rely on my well honed “Grab and Go” food expertise to makeup the difference and order by phone. This is the place! Always freshly prepared and on time, whether to-go or in-house, I love their great classic chicken enchiladas with green sauce! My favorite comfort food from a favorite neighborhood restaurant.

Mi Rancho Enchiladas

The Mi Rancho Enchiladas from El Rosal #2 can be found on the Platillos Tipicos de Casa section of the menu, and is a go-to if looking to go beyond just the red or green sauces. With your choice of filling, the sauce the enchiladas are covered in is truly unique and crave-worthy, as long as you’re okay with a little bit of heat - the spicy sauce uses dried chile pods and extra seasonings, resulting in a sauce full of flavor and kick. Topped with onion, radish, and cotija cheese and served with rice and beans, it’s really hard to go wrong with this dish! The View Crew tried it with carnitas and cheese, and we cannot recommend it enough! There are many El Rosals for you to enjoy.

Modesto USA is known around the world for our American Graffiti classic car culture. The sounds of AM radio, the class of 1962 and the vroom of hot rods ready to cruise. May 31 kicks off the season with the legendary George Lucas film American Graffiti at the historic 1934 State Theatre. Then the cruise is on, with the Modesto Area Street Rods show in McHenry Village,(one if the early cruise turnarounds) on June 1. With a week of Park n Shines, a classic MoBand night in the park you can check out the annual Legends of the Cruise ceremony and car show in 10th Street Plaza at 5 pm on June 4 with some great rock n roll. June 6, the magic happens for the American Graffiti Festival Cruise in downtown and then the big car show of the year at MJC West, thanks to the North Modesto Kiwanis. Fun fact, the North Modesto Kiwanis will be the Grand Marshal of the Cruise Parade. Later in the month it’s Back to Graffiti with Smokey Robinson at the Fruit Yard and showings of Grease at the Gallo Center from Modesto Performing Arts. It is going to be a great summer, so get out your poodle skirt, leather jacket and sneakers and head to the local soda shop. Of course, Graffiti Summer home base will be at the Graffiti USA Museum at 610 N Ninth St with special exhibits all month long. Stop by and see the cars featured in American Graffiti and maybe make a donation to help construction. Modesto’s biggest free crowdsourced concert is coming May 18.
This is truly a special day, with over 60 porches and over 100 bands playing all over town. Best part is you can ride your bike from porch to porch, hang out with your friend, enjoy food trucks and find some new music. Most bands play foran hour so you can catch some variety. Modesto has so much talent and all that is asked of you is: be cool, don’t block streets, tip the musicians and respect the porch host’s homes and yards. This is a special event and we can keep it going if it goes well. So get ready, check the map, plan your stops, or just go random. Don’t forget to cross over Dry Creek and check out the porches in LaLoma. I happen to know that Edgebrook Dr has a good thing going so stop by, bring your chairs and pop-up tent for the park. Download the map and
schedule from www.modestoporchfest.com

On May 4th, Star Wars is on everyone’s mind worldwide. It’s an extra special day here in Modesto, USA—home of creator George Lucas. The original Star Wars movie was released on May 25, 1977, forever changing modern film. Downtown Modesto changed forever in 1998 when the former Hotel Covell, Hotel Hughson were demolished to make way for 10th St Place. This was bold and controversial, but it saved downtown Modesto and today has really created community. Modesto’s 10th Street Plaza is home to many events presented by ModestoView like May the 4th, Music in the Plaza, and Rockin’ Holiday as well as DoMo 1st Fridays, Spirit of Giving and more. All of these have one thing in common, support from the Brenden Theatre and we are grateful.
Rising up from the literal “ashes” of the Strand Theatre, a new theater was built. We started ModestoView as “PlazaCam” a webcam that focused on the building of 10th St Place and our community watched it grow. Brenden Theatres, lead by Johnny Brenden was just what downtown needed. Johnny is the grandson of Ted Mann, who was a leader in theatres across the USA and even owned the famous Mann’s Chinese in Hollywood. The Brenden 18 debuted with an amazing neon tower and a marquee that commanded the street just like the theatres in the Golden Age, worthy of premiers and more and worthy of our downtown history.
Saul Trujillo has been at the helm of Brenden Modesto since it was a construction site. He supervised its creation and today, he runs our go-to theatre in Modesto. Brenden is an important part of downtown, drawing the most people into downtown than any other commercial

business with 18 auditoriums. It has hosted many a premier and including a star-studded Star Wars that included Mark Hammill, Carol Channing and more. Saul is engaged in our community both with the theater and his family. He has always been a team player, and frankly, without Saul, many of our events would never happen and he has bailed out many an organizations.
Let’s meet Brenden Theatres General Manager Saul Trujillo.
ModestoView: Why is going to the movies so special?
Saul Trujillo: There is something special about watching a movie on the big screen, with the laughing and gasping of the people around you, having movie theater popcorn, and escaping the daily monotonous to do lists of life. Sitting in a dark auditorium completely immersed in the movie going experience.
MV: What drew you to the movie business?
ST: I got my start in the movie business at 17, working as a ticket taker at Festival Cinemas, owned by Mann Theaters, on north McHenry Ave here in Modesto. I’d always been a huge fan of movies growing up, aso working at a theater felt like the perfect fit for me as a teenager.
MV: You have a unique ring-side seat to downtown, do you have a favorite moment?
ST: One of my favorite memories was helping prepare for the grand opening of Brenden Theatres in 1999. As an assistant
manager at the time, I had the unique experience of watching a theater rise from the ground up- and with it, the downtown area began to come alive again. It was exciting to see a community start to rebuild around the magic of the movies.
MV: COVID was disastrous from movie theatres, how do you overcome this?
ST: COVID was an incredibly challenging time for our industry. Many small, independent theater chains like ours were forced to close their doors permanently. What helped us endure over a year of being shut down was strong leadership, smart decision-making, and the unwavering dedication of our team- from our corporate office to our staff members on the ground.
MV: With home theatres and streaming, what do you think theatres need to prosper?
ST: After COVID restrictions were lifted,
families returned to theaters in droves. People were tired of being cooped up and streaming everything from their living rooms. They craved the shared experience an sense of normalcy. The demand was clear: audiences wanted to get out and enjoy movies the way they were meant to be seen. To meet the need, our industry needs to continue to innovate by investing in diverse formats, elevated food and beverage, and big comfortable recliners.
MV: It’s been a long time since movie theatres had traditional seats, you are all recliners, now, how has that changed your business?
ST: Recliners have transformed the movie theater experience. What started as a luxury feature has quickly become the new standard. Today most new theater builds are designed with recliners in mind. While they significantly reduce capacity, they have also elevated comfort and brought audiences back more frequently.
MV: What key suggestion do you have to make downtown Modesto thrive?
ST: In my opinion, we need to create a vibrant destination location out of Downtown Modesto. Create a bright and safe environment with it’s own unique identity. Create additional residential spaces that would then support additional retail and the already present great restaurants downtown.
MV: People don’t know this, but the Brenden draws hundreds of thousands of people downtown annually, how can the city better capitalize on what you are doing?
ST: Creating a dynamic entertainment hub around the theater would be a great approach. Goal would be to encourage visitors to extend their outing by offering a variety of experiences in one convenient location.
MV: What’s your favorite movie?
ST: The Godfather
MV: How cool was it to have Mark Hamill here for a Star Wars Premier?
ST: Meeting Mark Hamill and having him visit Modesto for the Star Wars premiere was absolutely a highlight for me. To welcome such an iconic figure in cinema to Downtown Modesto was definitely an unforgettable moment for me.
MV: Describe your ideal day?
ST: My ideal day would be watching my daughter play softball for her varsity high school team, followed by cheering on my son as plays baseball for his travel team. There’s nothing better than spending time with my family - it’s truly the perfect way to spend the day.
MV: Our signature question, Beatles or Stones?
ST: Let it Be, The Beatles.
I personally want to thank you for all you have done to help our events and I and our team are grateful for all you have done.

The Brenden Theatre tower soares above the plaza, a beacon to film goers with 18 auditoriums. Owned by Johnny Brenden, the grandson of the George Mann of the Mann’ theatre chain that owned the Mann’s Chinese theatre for a time. See photo of Star Wars premier. Brenden has been host to many premiers and special events, most notably one of George Lucas hand-picked locations for Star Wars Episode III, a benefit for the Gallo Center, that attracted Mark Hamill, Carol Channing and more. Fast cars fill the streets for the Fast and Furious films, and people dressed up for the Harry Potter premiers and the marquee area plays host to many local events, all while hundreds of thousands of people come to downtown to see a movie and explore. There are two big auditoriums and some are smaller and intimate. The Brenden has a large concession and serves beer, wine and cocktails. Dinner and cocktails are walking distance and on Fridays during the summer, you can enjoy Music in the Plaza on the way to your movie. As I write this, my wife and I are going to dinner and a movie there this evening. I am personally grateful for the Brenden Theatres as they have been home base for many of our events and have bailed out many a local organization when the weather turns bad, thanks to their epic neon marquee. Our friend and GM Saul Trujillo has been at the helm of the Modesto Brenden since it was a blueprint. Read his interview on page 14. The movies are magic. When you are a kid, it’s so exciting to finally go to the big movie theatre. Still today, dinner and a movie is still one of our favorite date nights. Covid did some serious damage to the movie industry and streaming has wormed its way into the movie culture. Sure, it’s great that films have a second life streaming, but seeing a film on the big screen, large soda or beer, with a bucket of buttery popcorn and Milk Duds or Hot Tamales is just the way to go. Theatres still have a back row and you can sometimes get stuck in the front, but hey, it’s all part of the experience. Today, most of our theatres have nice recliners and your seat is reserved, so no need to rush your pre-game if you don’t like the “coming soons”. Let’s explore the movies here in our world.
For most of the twentieth century, movie houses and theatres were a big part of any community. Town centers were built around theatres and economies grew around the theatres. Even with the multiplexes appeared, the movies were a central part of our lives. The fabulous premiers, like the hand and footprints at the Grauman’s Chinese theatre in Hollywood, the red carpets of New York and London, and the larger-than-life images on the screen captivated us and created legends. Downtown Modesto had the Modesto Theatre, the Strand, the Princess (later as the Covell) and the State, the sole reminder of this golden age of film. Thanks to the amazing Modesto community, the State stands tall today. I remember seeing the Poseidon Adventure at the Briggsmore, and later, being the first in line for the first Star Wars showing in 1977. There is so much more of this history (Prescott, drive-ins etc), but we have limited space here. www.historicmodesto.com has more info as well as www.modestoview.com/category/history/
In 1998, a bold plan to redevelop downtown Modesto following the urban exodus of the 1970s and 80s began construction. The Strand had been lost to fire in 1984, and the Covell was abandoned and demolished. Out of these ashes, emerged Tenth Street Place and Plaza. In 1999, a new downtown center opened, complete with a beautiful new Brenden Theatre, with a marquee worthy of Hollywood with a tower that rose high into the sky. It jump-started a new era of restaurants and business and has been host to many events, like May the 4th, Music in the Plaza, Rockin’ Holiday, Spirit of Giving and more.
The State Theatre has never been brighter. Since the restoration started back in 1994, the community has rallied around this amazing 1934 Art Deco wonder that did a stint as Cine-Mexico in the 70s & 80s. The State history shines bright and the theatre has top quality Dolby, digital projectors, as well as their old film projectors. Going to a movie in the State is wonderful, with tasty popcorn and even a cocktail from the lobby. Old and new films share the screen and the Modesto Film Society showcases the classics each month. The State expanded with a 24 seat Jewel theatre (a mini State) for alternate showings. Now, you can get your before and after cocktails and snacks in the Art Deco Intermission Lounge, with craft cocktails in a Golden Age of Hollywood space. It’s really easy to book the State, Jewel or Intermission for your own private event. The State has become a major part of our community gathering including the annual home of the MAMA Awards since 2001. We are grateful for the many people that have stepped up over the years to keep this theatre alive and thriving. So get dressed up in your cool vintage outfit and check out the film schedule and stay up to date at www.thestate.org
Please consider joining the State and support this wonderful piece of history all year long

What’s your favorite Modesto movie theatre popcorn? The ViewCrew is a little biased as the fresh real buttered popcorn at the State Theatre is hard to beat. Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. An eclectic group of six kids vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

Classic Car Museum announces an ambitious restoration project for Mamie Alberti’s iconic 1958 Edsel.
The vehicle—which once served as a familiar beacon outside the legendary Knights Round Table restaurant from 1951 to 1983—will become the centerpiece of a unique educational partnership. The restoration project will bring together Modesto City Schools CTE education, Modesto Junior College, and various industry partners in a community effort to preserve this symbol of Modesto’s golden age.

The Knights Round Table, operated by Mamie Disciascio Noto Alberti until her passing in 2004, was more than just a restaurant - it was the epicenter of Modesto’s vibrant car culture throughout the 1950s and beyond. Located across from Thomas Downey High School, the castle-themed establishment became a cornerstone of local teenage social life, where young drivers would cruise by to showcase their vehicles.
The restoration initiative will bring together paint manufacturers, auto parts suppliers, and sponsors to support this educational endeavor. This collaborative approach not only honors Mamie’s legacy of community building but also provides hands-on experience for the next generation of automotive professionals.
“This restoration project perfectly embodies Mamie’s spirit of nurturing young people,” said Cecil Russell, Graffiti USA Museum’s Executive Director, noting how the original Knights Round Table was a place where “students from all walks of life found acceptance and guidance”.
You’ll find Mamie’s 1958 Edsel at some of the Graffiti Summer car shows this summer, including the American Graffiti Car Show & Festival at the MJC West Campus on June 7th and 8th, in an effort to raise funds for the vehicle’s restoration. Once complete, the vehicle will be displayed in the Graffiti USA Museum’s permanent collection for all to reminisce over and enjoy. Last month’s Poetry Night and Haiku Battle was a standing-room-only success—full of laughter, vulnerability, new poet, “Shaiku,” and kazoos. The energy was electric, and the courage on that stage reminded us why we write: to be heard, to heal, to have fun, and to connect.
This month we invite you to Write Night on Wednesday, May 14, 6-9pm, at The Queen Bean Coffee & Social House. This free creative writing class is open to all levels and designed for reflection and connection with low-stakes sharing and
high-impact inspiration. The only rule? You can only share what you write that night.
Write Night is a reminder that our lives are not final drafts. We’re all works in progress—editing as we go. Through writing, we practice acceptance, self-discovery, and catharsis. We purge what weighs on us and find meaning in the mess. This is more than a writing workshop. It’s a brave and safe space where stories are honored, mistakes are welcome, and community is built one word at a time.

You will see some big announcements about the next season rolling out from the Gallo Center, Prospect Theatre, Modesto Symphony and others and we’ll keep you posted on those. In the meantime, let’s see how much we can get into May.

It’s a Verdi Month!
The Modesto Symphony brings one of the most monumental classical pieces ever written, Verdi’s Requiem, to the Gallo stage with a full chorus with soloists. The Requiem is a challenge for any symphony and will be a stellar presentation not to be missed.

a role he has performed to great acclaim on four continents. Verdi’s Falstaff is often called the greatest operatic comedy ever composed and is based primarily on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. This heartwarming comedy tells of the knight Sir John Falstaff who has fallen on hard times and schemes to get his hands on some cash by romancing two wealthy wives of Windsor - Alice Ford and Meg Page. However, when these best friends find out that he has sent them both an identical love letter, they decide to teach Falstaff a lesson! After plots and counterplots, confusion, disguises, deception, and a dunking in the River Thames by way of a laundry basket, the entire company agrees that the whole world may be nothing but a jest filled with jesters, but he who laughs last, laughs best! The State Theatre Wow, the State’s stage is rockin’ this month. First off is a One of These Nights, the acclaimed Eagles tribute followed up by the Modesto’s legendary band California Zephyr celebrating 50 years for Hope Haven on the 9th.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a wildly popular play, partly because of the great story and partly due to some audience participation. To learn more about these Gallo Repertory shows, we checked in with Ryan Foy.
ModestoView: How exciting is it to have the success of the Gallo Center Repertory Company?
Ryan Foy: I’m thrilled be at the helm of GCRC at this exciting time! GCRC was started 15 years ago by Jim Johnson, and had great success over the years presenting American Theatre classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, Our Town, and The Diary of Anne Frank. I was brought on in 2022 when Jim retired from his duties as Artistic Director, and I am absolutely floored by the growth we have seen over the past three years. The Gallo Center team has really invested in the program to establish it as a thriving community theatre, including the exciting development that all of our shows next season will be running for two weekends! From staffing the creative teams of the productions with theatre professionals, to the incredibly talented local actors who volunteer their time to put on the shows, GCRC is truly a community effort.
on 6 unique and awkward spelling champions competing in their county spelling bee, all played by adult actors portraying their character’s own struggles and quirks. The show also has lots of opportunities for delightful improv, as it includes volunteer participation of 4 additional spellers from the audience, joining the cast on stage. The show is light-hearted and fun, but also has some deeply heartfelt moments and songs that will definitely have you reaching for a tissue. It is especially poignant working on the show right now, as the composer William Finn passed away unexpectedly last month. We hope you will join us to hear the incredible musical gift he left behind.
MV: What do you want people to know about this program at the Gallo Center and where do you see it going for upcoming seasons.
RF: The Gallo Center Repertory Company typically puts on 4 shows a year, and packages are already on sale for next season! Next up for GCRC is a season of mystery and intrigue, with all four productions in 25/26 revolving around a murder of some kind. In the fall, we’ll be presenting a new adaptation of the classic mystery that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film, Dial M for Murder. After that, we’ll be presenting another one of my favorite musicals, Into the Woods. In the spring of 2026, we’ll be presenting The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, followed by a new stage adaptation of Dan Brown’s thriller, The Da Vinci Code. I’m excited to see GCRC continue to grow and thrive as we continue to produce incredible local theatre. We want everyone in Modesto and the Central Valley to know that you don’t have to travel far to see great work on stage, we have amazing things happening right here at the Gallo Center for the Arts.

Moms and those acting as mother-figures can provide support, love, and guidance for many in the community and Mother’s Day is a very special day to honor those who make us feel loved all-year long! There’s a lot of pressure to find the “perfect” gift and get it just right, but all moms are different and there are many ways to show you care. Mother’s Day gifts don’t have to cost a thing and can be simply the gift of time or a written note or drawing to celebrate this special day in May – maybe even check out the Express Library at 10th St Plaza to get inspired by a book of poetry or illustrations. If you are looking for some local gift ideas, here are a few ideas on how to let those close to you know that you are thinking of them.
• Breakfast in Bed: Let them sleep in! Either pick up fresh produce, jams, and fresh bread at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market the morning of May 10th for the perfect breakfast accoutrements OR go to We Donuts or Mr. T’s for delicious local and freshly baked donuts that Sunday morning.
• Flowers: Kelley Flower Farm is the go-to place for gorgeous flowers and arrangements. You can find Kelley Flower Farm at the Farmer’s Market on Thursday and Saturday the week of Mother’s Day to bring
home some beautiful arrangements. You can also find them at 3101 Jackson Road
Tues-Fri 10 AM to 6 PM and Sat 9 AM to 1 PM.
• Something Homemade: There are classes at local places all over town that can show you how to make timeless works of art for all levels of experience. Paper Habit in McHenry Village has watercolor and knitting classes (check out their retail selection and cards while you’re there!) and Make Studio on Needham has a floral arrangement class, pottery mug, and painted pot class in May all before Mother’s Day!
• Peace and Quiet: Get a book that’s right up their alley from Bookish, incense from Intrinsic Elements or candles from Mobaak, a pedicure gift card from Polished Nail, or a bottle (or two!) of wine from Camp 4 Wine Café so that they can wind down, relax, and have a few moments to themselves to enjoy some time alone.
Thank you to all the parents and parent figures that are helping guide and love the next generation in our Central Valley.

“It’s crazy out there!”
As I sat down the other day to begin writing this column, this opening line immediately jumped to mind. Truth be told, though, I’ve had the same thought again and again over days, weeks, months, years… While the causes of such craziness seem endless, the fundamental question remains: What to do now?

Recently, I was teaching mindfulness to middle-school students. I would often begin with a demonstration where I would shake a jar of water filled with glitter.
The students were delighted to watch the spinning, sparkling lights. But then I asked, “What if I wanted the glitter to stop spinning?” Of course, someone would quickly say, “Stop shaking it!” I paused, but then shook it again, asking, “What if the glitter were thoughts, and that exact thought –‘stop!’ – made the jar shake more, and the more you wanted the thoughts to stop, the faster they would spin?” No response.
The sheer speed of modern life can feel overwhelming, but how to slow it down? Just thinking “stop” doesn’t work. Steven Mitchell’s fine translation of Tao Te Ching,
an ancient Chinese book of wisdom, offers one clue, reminding us that “each separate being in the universe/ returns to the common source./ Returning to the source is serenity.”
So, what is the way back to “the source”? Recent scientific evidence points to the effectiveness of practices like T’ai Chi Ch’uan, a slow, gentle Chinese martial art that mindfully engages the moving body. Mary Layton, who co-founded the Modesto Tai Chi Academy with Naser Ataee, describes its benefits as follows: “What I have loved about Tai Chi is that it is a total exercise, including the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects that make up my humanity. After practicing Tai Chi I feel a sense of wholeness; whatever was disjointed or depleted in me before is brought back into harmony. It’s a happy, energizing feeling to be reconnected to one’s original nature.”
Best of all, such magic is available for all of us, so may I share a “shout out” to the Modesto Tai Chi Academy, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary in May

Founded in 2023 by industry veteran Matt (Sinatra) Henderson, Resurrection Brands is quickly establishing itself as a key player in North America’s wine market. With an impressive 32-year tenure at The Wine Group, Matt’s extensive experience and passion for wine led him to create a company dedicated to offering exceptional value wines to consumers across the continent. The team also includes Modesto natives David Halvorson Jr. and Alex Dinsmore, along with Gustine native Meg Abdallah. Resurrection Brands started its journey with two distinct labels: Slow Press and Stave & Steel. These brands set the stage for the company’s initial offerings, reaching half of the United States and Canada. The company’s commitment to quality quickly attracted attention and, in 2024, Resurrection Brands proudly added McManis Family Vineyards to its portfolio. This five-generation family business from Ripon, California, allowed Resurrection Brands to extend its reach to all fifty states,

solidifying its presence in the competitive wine industry.
Continuing its growth trajectory, Resurrection Brands welcomed its second multi-generational family winery, LangeTwins Winery and Vineyards, from Lodi, California, in the latter half of 2024. This addition brought iconic brands like Sand Point, Ivory & Burt, LangeTwins Single Vineyard, and Caricature into the company’s diverse lineup.
As part of its innovative approach to wine distribution, Resurrection Brands also offers BUDHAGIRL sparkling wines throughout the Southwest and is set to launch a new California Pinot Noir, Archway Wines, in May 2025. With a focus on quality, value, and tradition, Resurrection Brands is poised to redefine wine distribution in North America while honoring its commitment to delivering exceptional products to consumers.
