Happy March everyone!

This month is always special at our house.  As a Murphy / McNulty / Power / Leupp (the Swiss Irish faction) family we are all about the Irish celebrations, especially St. Patrick’s Day and hope to see you for an Irish breakfast at P. Wexford’s.  It’s always a happy day.  It’s also extra exciting this month as our house has just gone from 0-100 mph with three grandkids and we are loving every minute!  This is that time of our lives where we are tech support and mission control all in one and we couldn’t be happier.

Grandkids give you a new perspective on many things.   It’s our job to enlighten, encourage, educate and help kids learn about the world around them.   In this crazy world right now, teaching empathy, understanding, compassion and most importantly curiosity is so very important.   We need that wonder of “what could

be” to be the guiding way, learning and experimenting all the way and leaving the things we do better than when we found them.  It’s up to us to teach kids about their community, how to get involved, even at a young age.  You see all the selfishness that people call “freedom”, when it should be just the opposite.  We are here to serve and support each other, lifting ourselves up and building civic pride as we go.   What kind of community are we creating for our kids?  Are we investing in the future? Are we involved and being part of the solution?  It’s not just for us now, but those who come after us.

I think we all need to channel our inner child and not forget the wonder of walking down a trail with a stick, or trying to find an owl in a tree. We need to love to answer every time, the question of “why?” and “how?” no matter how many times you

We deliver the West to you!

are asked.  Positive energy needs to be developed, created and fostered, as it is so easy for it to go the other way.

Reading “Next Door” is the most depressing thing.  People complain so much about everything, but very few do anything.  Looking at every passerby on their Ring cam feed as a threat is what we need to change.  We all can be part of making our community better, no matter your economic situation, ethnicity or gender.  Every neighborhood needs something.

Hopefully these pages of Modesto give you inspiration and ideas of ways to connect in our community, make new friends, share new experiences, find local businesses that will connect you more to this town.   That’s why we work hard to plan roads we may never drive, or build museums so that the next generation can learn about our history or support the performing arts, a school fund raiser, a box of Girl Scout Cookies,  or a poetry slam.  You never know where the impact will land or who’s day you will make.

I am so very proud of the women in our family and what amazing jobs they do to be kids, parents, partners, employees, mentors, grandmas and good local citizens. It is always women’s month at our house and it should be that way for everyone.  But, we take time to recognize those that have really made a difference.  I care, our kids will care and I hope you do too.  Let’s all be part of lifting up each other.

Thank you Modesto friends. Let’s keep inspiring each other.  Let’s create new dreams.  Let’s make the community we want, for our kids, for our future and for us. I am so very grateful to all of the people that make ModestoView happen each month where we can share good ideas and positive messaging and most of all, creating a forum for people to make things happen.

With gratitude,

Tell me what you like or don’t like at chrism@modestoview.com

ART VIEW March Into the Arts

March is here already, and we have survived Godzilla vs Modesto in February at the State Theatre, and hoping for a repeat.

February 18, Hocus Manriquez and crew, Leon Henry, Zsanise, and Zspirit unveiled Mural 3 for Stanislaus Arts Council

Heartland Grant at Hocus Ink in Ceres. The previous two murals in the series were at Johnny’s Market on 4th Street, Modesto, and Modesto Livestock Auction and Flea Market on 7th Street.

Student and Kid’s Art, classes young and old see the theme this month.  Young @ Art opens at Mistlin Gallery.  Dragonfly Art for Life has been redoing its layout to accommodate pre-K kids.  Classes for students young and old are offered at Mistlin, Dragonfly, Chartreuse Muse, Peer Recovery Art Project, and Hidden Beauty up at 103 Modesto Avenue, next to the Painted Ape Gallery and Tattoo.  Murals on the Painted Ape walls and parking lot will show you in the right place.

In Oakdale, the Valley Art Association is holding an Art Exhibition and Silent

Auction on March 9 and 10 starting at 10 AM both days.  The show will be up at 110 South 2nd Street, Oakdale. All proceeds will go to the Valley Art Association Scholarship Fund.  For full prospectus: ValleyArtAssociation@gmail.com

Judith Cochran will be the featured artist at the Kruse Lucas Art Gallery, in March, April, and May at 535 Tully Road.  Judith is a self-taught artist whose enjoyment to color was the warmth that kindled her creative spirit. The gallery is open Monday to Friday 9 to 5.  While in the area, drop in the MJC Art Gallery across the street, peruse The Silos parking lot, and the murals at Contentment Brewing.

Carnegie Arts Center has a Call for Artists out for the annual Farms and Fields Show. Entries open through March 30. For more information on events and classes, see http://CarnegieArtsTurlock. org An event I plan to attend on March 29 or 30 is the Artistic Repertoire Theatre Collaboration presentation of “One Voice Matters. This performance is a journey of

friends through mental wellness challenges in a collaboration of music, dance, singing, and visual arts, where there is no seating, but encouragement to wander the gallery through the performance. A.R.T. CO-Lab also does a First Friday event from March to November.

Expect some changes and expansion of the

Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk this month, as partners DoMo, D.I.D., and Tourism Bureau add on to enhance the Art Walk experience for patrons and artists alike.  Usual venues will be on the map.  This past month, Stacy Penland and her artist family opened State Theatre’s Intermission as a first-time stop for Art Walk.  DoMo Market First Friday event opens again in April

Stanislaus Artist Open Studio weekend is April 13 and 14.  Look for the printed maps this month from participating artists and the local galleries.  Admission is for all ages, and FREE, with an online map and directions available.  See http:// stanislausaos.com for the map link.

Broaden those horizons with a trip to Chinn’s International !

Diners commented how great the beer selection is and that I had to make it my next stop. Ask and I shall drink! Chinn’s International is a cozy spot nestled in the heart of downtown Modesto on J St. Grab a seat at the bar and be prepared to make a friend. The banter between staff and patrons marks the easy going feel and friendly atmosphere (Vibe check? Legit). Selfish for the win? If ever there was a reason to be selfish, it’s providing a quality selection of beer because you wanted to. Chinn owner Patrick Chinn was born into family business. He was working before he was 7 years old for his parent’s general store started by his Grandfather. Now that he’s doing it his way he makes no apologies in his quest to provide patrons with his own personal playlist of beers for everyone to enjoy. Hard work is such a pillar in Patrick’s life that he is constantly working to improve every aspect of his business. Chinn can usually be found behind the bar offering suggestions and samples to match whatever you’re in the mood for.

Not one who kneels, Patrick says what he truly feels. Offering a love letter to craft

beer, he has ignited a passion that shows the true art of a discerning palate. Twelve years of building relationships with brewers has brought the best to Modesto and we are all the better for it each careful step along the byway. Chinn’s relationships travel each and every highway and many roads beyond the bounds of our own local area, from the depths of So-Cal to the great Pacific Northwest, going against the grain to make sure we get a taste of what lies beyond our borders. An epic journey to rival Silenus on a quest for that golden liquid said to provide the drinker with knowledge, without the hassle of all that travel. His clientele had much to say about the experience at Chinn’s International. John, a regular attendee commented, “If you want to have a hometown experience where you are welcomed in like an old friend, Chinn’s is your place. They know everyone and make the effort to provide an experience you won’t forget!” I also spoke with some of the staff who unabashedly sang Patrick’s praises, “coming to work is easy here! We’ve got the best of beer, food and people! He cares about our opinions just as much as his

customers.”

Hungry? Chef Sandra Rios has planned each course, seeing it through without exemption. A balance between family recipes and inspiration shipped in by Demeter herself to deliver a feast. For what has this menu got? Staples like the Chow Mein, Smash Burger, and Pan-Fried Dumplings complement the beer selection. I personally vouch for the killer fish tacos. Flavor envelopes your every sense and transcends you to an unearthly place.

Let the record show Chinn’s international is no place to sleep on. The phenomenal selection of beer, the delicious food, and the people make this a solid recommendation.

Heck, it is one of the best months no matter what you are.   This year, St. Patrick’s Day is on a Sunday.  This is amazing and you can start your day early at P. GO MODESTO Pi Day

Mmmmmm, do you want some warm pie?

You know we have some amazing local bakeries that can make you a tempting treat to serve up to your friends and family. But what is Pi? You know, the number that never ends? But more importantly, know that this is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159…. Amaze your friends with how many decimal places you can go. When you run out of digits, enjoy pie on Pi day. Have fun and post your pics and don’t forget to #modestoview

T he Opera and the Octopus

that Jasmine would sing a double selection from ‘My Fair Lady’ as the penultimate piece, ending with ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ (which Jody and I almost did the night before at the Mardi Gras party I wrote about last month), and I knew that would be the perfect moment to interrupt the show. I enlisted Jasmine’s help to carry out my plan.

The octopus is my spirit animal. They are clever, curious, enigmatic, and occasionally mischievous creatures. I enjoy reading about them, and high on my experience wishlist is getting to pet one at an aquarium; perhaps I’ll even dive with some one day. I’ve built quite a collection of octopusian objects. There’s an octopus painting, an octopus-headed cane, an octopus sugar bowl, an octopus wine stopper, an orange glass blown octopus-tentacle-shaped shot glass, and a blue knitted octopus my lady commissioned for me to match her red one. Octopuses seem to show up everywhere we go. My lady’s best friend even plays in an accordion ensemble performing classical music. Their name? Bachtopus.

Last month during an Opera Modesto concert, an octopus became the mechanism of my marriage proposal.

It was Super Bowl Sunday, and OM was presenting a Valentine’s recital starring baritone Andrew Pardini and octo-soprano Jasmine Diaz. This happened to be my first anniversary with Jody. We were already quite the rockstar couple in the local opera circle - Jody performed an original poem at my annual December world-music concert with them, and she and I won the audiencefavorite costume prize during January’s Sherlock Holmes opera weekend. A glance at the Valentine concert program showed

She called us to the stage before launching into the song and recognized our anniversary. I handed Jody her gift: a stuffed octopus I’d seen in a store window a few days earlier. But this was no ordinary octopus. It had blue circles set under its eyes. This was a blue-ringed octopus. And when you’re holding onto a brilliant blue engagement ring to give to the woman you love, only a blue-ringed octopus will do. I wedged the ring onto a tentacle; presented it to Jody; and in true football spirit, I took a knee, becoming not only the luckiest man in Modesto, not only the first to propose at an Opera Modesto event, but the first person in history to become engaged by octopus. I think. You’d have to ask an anthropologist whether they were used as dowries in some ancient culture. And that is my story of the engagement that ought to go down in Modesto legend.

After a lengthy hiatus, live music returns to the Dragonfly Art For Life this month, with another ‘Friday Night Folk Flight’ featuring one of my favorite local lovebird musical duos, The Darcys (Erik Lindblom & Robin Retherford.) This multiinstrumental Americana act is influenced by the likes of Jackson Browne, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, John Prine, and Neil Young. They’ve got a batch of new songs they’ve been waiting to share. Catch their set on March 29 from 7:309:00 pm, at 1210 J St. $10 cash admission at the door. Keep a watch for more artist announcements there this spring.

Meet Veronica Hernandez, the trailblazing General Manager of the Modesto Nuts, who made history as the first Latina to ever hold this prestigious position in Minor League Baseball and the first woman to manage the Nuts. It’s a long journey from her small hometown in Connecticut, where Veronica, as a first-generation American, fell in love with sports during third-grade recess. Her passion for sports marketing was ignited in high school, and she pursued it further by earning a Bachelor of Science in Sports Media from Ithaca College.

Baseball wasn’t originally in her career plan, but destiny had other ideas. Veronica overcame numerous challenges, including juggling multiple jobs to pay off student loans and taking unpaid internships to gain invaluable experience. Her relentless determination and unwavering commitment to her career bore fruit when she landed an internship with the Hudson Valley Renegades, a minor-league baseball team. This marked the beginning of her baseball career, with subsequent roles at the Arkansas Travelers, Lancaster JetHawks, and ultimately the Modesto Nuts. Today, she is living her dream of heading a Marketing Department for a sports team.

ModestoView: Have you always been passionate about baseball?

Veronica Hernandez: Funny enough, I never considered baseball as a potential career until a couple of years after graduation. It is not that I didn’t want to work in the league, it’s just when I was a fresh graduate looking for jobs, baseball wasn’t the primary league posting their job openings. It was all the fall sports.

MV: Can you tell us about your journey and how you became the General Manager of the Modesto Nuts?

VH: Reflecting on my days as a graduating senior, I recall finding a full-time job (specifically in sports) was HARD. In my first three years of college, I put in so much “internship time” in many different organizations. Going into the Winter of my senior year I started to apply for jobs (my goal was to have a job and start in June), I thought my resume experience was solid. From winter to early spring, I must have applied to hundreds of positions, but I didn’t receive ONE call back. Finally, midway into my Spring semester, I received a call from the NBA - I

Modesto Nuts General Manager:

Veronica Hernandez

finally landed an interview. That call will be ingrained in my memory forever. At the end of the interview, I asked a questionwhat can I do to make my resume better and increase potential interviews? The answer: “I am surprised you got this far without knowing anyone”. That one call was the only one I received for seven months. During my graduating summer, I decided to take an unpaid internship with Cornell University’s Football Program, surely this would open some doors; it didn’t. I returned to my hometown, defeated. At that time, I decided if I couldn’t find a job in the industry I wanted, I might as well spend the next few months tackling my student loans. So that was what I set out to do, I took on about four jobs, working over 100 hours a week. I did that for about 1.5 - 2 years and completed my target goal - paying off my student loans. With my heart still focused on the sports industry, I returned to the application pool. Again, I was receiving ZERO calls. I looked into a Master’s Program, spoke to alumni, and even asked the alumni “How can I improve my resume?” Their answer, get back into it, intern (unpaid), and get more sports team experience. It is all about the “right time”,

I took that advice around February, prime baseball hiring season. All the job openings were in baseball. So I humbled myself back to an unpaid intern. Started off in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, with the Danbury Westerners.  I see my career journey as a “snowball effect”. From the Westerners, my work ethic opened the doors for me in minor league baseball; through networking, I received an opportunity to intern for the Hudson Valley Renegades, at the time Short Season for the Tampa Bay Rays. After that internship, my resume was finally strong enough to pop out during full-time job applications. Through networking and a strong resume, I received over a dozen job offers to continue a career working in the minor leagues. My next steps led me to work for the Arkansas Travelers, Lancaster JetHawks, and now the Modesto Nuts. Each opportunity provided me with an advancement in my career. With the Nuts, I landed my dream job - running my own Marketing Department for a Sports team. My work ethic never changed, I always put my head down and work hard. This allowed new doors to open (opportunities I never considered for my career), an offer

to be Assistant General Manager and then General Manager.

MV: As the first Latina Woman in your position, how do you think your experience varies from others who have previously fulfilled your role?

VH: Everyone has their story and many journeys are hard and an uphill battle. That is especially true coming from a Latina working in a man’s world (baseball). But what I bring to the table is different from most, not only can I speak the language and engage with our local Latino community but also communicate with the players. The lessons I have learned from my journey helped with some situations that have arisen for our organization. Being who I am has helped me improve different aspects of our business.

MV: Can you share any memorable moments or achievements that you are particularly proud of during your time with the Modesto Nuts?

VH: I am very honored to have won local awards in our community. But the ones won with my team are special, 2022 Modesto Chamber Member of the Year and of course the 2023 California League Championship. My team puts in a lot of hours and hard work, we all have a passion for making this community better. Being able to celebrate these moments with them is something very special.

MV: What strategies or initiatives have you implemented to enhance the fan experience and engagement with the Modesto Nuts?

VH: Preparing for 2023, I learned that community is what “works”. Creating the strategy to make our ballpark inclusive to support local organizations will not only help the Nuts but the overall community. Every year we try to partner more and more with local organizations to expand this thought process. Fan experience is led by those in guest experience, from ushers to concessions staff and all the above. It starts with hiring the right people, those who are passionate about what they do and give it their all. But the front office knows what is important and how we hold everyone accountable. I and everyone else in the front office read every one of our internal game day surveys and; most of the time took ideas and implemented them immediately.

MV: How do you work with the team’s coaching staff and players to ensure success both on and off the field?

VH: Zach Vinceji (2023 & 2024 Manager) and I work hand in hand, through transparency and urgency. Anything he might need for player

operations; we are here to help him. On the other hand, he always jumps at the opportunity to see how he and the team can be more impactful in the community. The players are fully engaged, not only signing autographs before and after a game but also making some memorable experiences for fans throughout the season.

MV: In your opinion, what sets the Modesto Nuts apart from other minor league baseball teams?

VH: Many teams have a focus on their community, but our recent approach of theming out some promotional nights to be community-based is a different approach. Our range keeps growing but this year we have:

- Reading Program - An educational program of ours incentivizing local youth to read

- Health and Wellness Program - focusing on mental health, physical health, and cleanliness

- High School Program - focusing on attendance, graduation rates, and future planning

- Ticket Fundraiser, working with several local organizations

- Together Tuesdays - Donate (2) items and receive a FREE ticket

- Bark in the Park: A recurring dog day for each Thursday home game

- Silver Sluggers - A discounted program for those 55+ and older

- PHAST Friday - Local students will share presentations on Tobacco prevention

- Breast Cancer Awareness, with a silent auction at the end of the season to support breast cancer research

- Carros Locos - Bringing our Latino culture to intertwine with our Graffiti Culture.

- Latino Nights (Los Alebrijes de Modesto), with a silent auction at the end of the season to support youth scholarships

- First Responders Night

- Child Safety Night

- Home Run for Homeless

- Developmental Disabilities Awareness Night  We are open to many more! We like to create the approach that baseball is a platform to help inform or support a local group.

MV:How do you collaborate with the local community and businesses to strengthen the team’s presence in Modesto?

MV: What advice would you give to aspiring individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in sports management?

VH: It is an uphill battle, take on the work. Sometimes it is hard to understand how to set yourself apart, but it is fairly easy. Do the job well, but go above and beyond for the team. The little things matter and they are what set you apart.

MV: Looking forward, what are your goals and aspirations for the Modesto Nuts in the coming years?

VH: I would love to see this community thrive and the Nuts to be able to grow alongside the community.

MV: Do you have any advice for those looking to break into a career in sports management?

VH: Make sure your internship has future opportunities for you. If you do a good job there, make it almost impossible for them to let you go. Entering the sports industry can be difficult and sometimes eating humble pie is how to get you to the next level.

MODESTO AREA BREAKFAST GUIDE

I love breakfast and first things first. Mad props to the old school places that were the foundation of our childhoods; Denny’s, Smitty’s, Old Mill and Ridgways.  Although a chain, there is something special about a Denny’s and the diner we have at 5 points is one of the classic versions. Love me some Moons over My Hammy or a Grand Slam. Our kids grew up at Ridgway’s with strawberry shakes and pancakes and you can’t beat the biscuits and gravy at the Old Mill.  If you were really lucky, you had breakfast at the Fruit Yard as that was a special outing.

Breakfast is still a quest of mine, here, away and now with grandkids. What is open early on a weekend morning?  Beyond these original staples above, there are new places with lots of options, including creative breakfast cocktails.  This by no means is a comprehensive list, but a starter guide to point you in many different directions.

Rivets American Grill

This place is a savior and it opens every day at 8 am.  One the weekend, Rivets is clutch as it has a great kid’s menu and great breakfast entrees like a Chorizo scramble. These are hearty portions and the huevos rancheros are stellar.  With a menu that includes all of the favorites you can get a kid’s milkshake and Murf can get an Irish coffee. The kids pancakes are big with the egg scramble and sausage. Loads of TVs and a good supply of ModestoView at the entry make it a great morning.

2307 Oakdale Rd. Modesto 209-846-0501 @rivetsgrill

Delicioso

by Mr. and Mrs. You, like me have driven by this on H Street hundreds of time. Next time, you have to stop. I was so pleased with the breakfast service and the menu was extensive. I was so excited that they have hashbrowns and a little of everything. They have a great line up of benedicts, and classics like steak and eggs and, amazingly enough, a Monte Cristo.  What really excited me was the crepes. The Chorizo crepe is one of the best tastes in town, add the nice brick of hash browns it’s amazing.  AND, they have beer, wine, mimosas and more. Try this place as soon as you can.  Open 9 am daily.

1410 H Street, Modesto 209-918-3857 @DeliciosoBistro

My Mimosas

Many know My Mimosas by the supersize fruity mimosas. There is so much more. Step inside and you see a beautiful club, mirrorballs, couches and it is bright and clean and the smell of hashbrowns are in the air. Check out the menu and you see all of the breakfast faves and what stood out was a corned beef omelette. WOW.  It was so good, the hashbrowns were crispy and since they have a full bar, I had an Irish Coffee, but the adult cocktail list was loaded with treats. My Mimosas is all ages until 4 pm on the weekends and open daily at 9 am.  Check it out.

917 J Street • 209-248-7464 @mymimosas_m

Harvest Moon

Open at 10 am daily, Harvest Moon is a favorite. The Crab omelet is a stand out, a Neil’s omelet derived from the famous Neil’s toss salad, fresh strawberry bread pudding, and some tasty benedicts with a side of sweet potato fries.  This is such a great place to enjoy breakfast and a good stop after a stroll in the Modesto Farmer’s Market.  Don’t forget to order a full meal bloody Mary, mimosa or Irish Coffee.  Hall of fame

LoFi Luncheonette and Lounge

This may be the most adorable breakfast places in town at the corner of 14th & J.  With a full bar, counter seating, Wonderland murals, you can get a good morning pick me up.  But what you will really love is the southern grits! There are some classics on the menu but the one that really rang out is the California omelet, bacon, avocado and cheese with a delicious spicy chili ranch topping.  LoFi also offers tots and a tomato confit and many more creative dishes.

Open 9 am W-F and 10am on weekends. 1335 J Street,  Modesto 209-550-9302 @dinerbylofi

Close cuteness runner up, is Lucille on H Street and they have some tasty breakfast dishes and good grab and go options and a gourmet egg cheese and English muffin.

Secret Garden

For those that haven’t been, this is the former Ridgway’s.  But it is fresh and new and loaded with fresh fruit, Fruity Pebbles French toast and meat lovers omelets and the decadent chocolate covered croissants with fresh strawberries. Since they have a full bar, you can get mimosa flights, Bloody Mary and Irish Coffee treats. Of course, there are shakes for the kids.  Open 7 am daily.  Secret Garden 2401 E Orangeburg. Modesto

Sam’s Café

Located in the heart of downtown Ceres and conveniently accessible from HWY 99, Sam’s Cafe is local gem that offers a top-notch, consistently reliable, traditional breakfast experience. This charming cafe, with its welcoming and friendly staff, ensures a delightful start to your day. Whether you’re falling in love with their fluffy pancakes or savoring their

Weekend Treats

Michael’s Pizza – by Steve Perry

While pizza is the staple, those in the know, come to Michael’s Pizza, for a first rate, classic breakfast.  Offering an omelet bar, they put it together for you in the kitchen, with many different options in cheese, vegies and meats.  Additionally, they have two eggs plus a variety of choices of meats including chicken fried steak.  Specialties include a breakfast pizza, the perfunctory burrito, eggs Billy bob (benedict with yummy gravy instead of hollandaise) and a fit and fun plate.  French toast and pancakes are also available.  The portion size is built for the hungry, the steak was ample and plentiful, topped with a delicious house gravy and coupled with a super Bloody Mary, it’s a weekend. Bauhaus by Steve Perry

The Bauhaus movement was a synergizing artistic period, true to its name Bauhaus 209 with Chef Tye Bauer, well known for his appearance on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, continues to please in this off the radar gem.  Small and cozy it feels very French, with an American simplicity.  View crew had the egg and sausage plate, for a hearty appetite, the beef Wellington topped with an egg, the puff pastry with pancetta egg and bearnaise sauce, of course mimosa and as a final, small cinnamon rolls in a micro skillet.  The puff pastry was light, and the pancetta added a nice flavor to the bearnaise pairing with the texture of the egg and flaky pastry.  Add this hideaway to your Sunday brunch list.

BIG VIEW

Spring into March!

T his might be the greenest green that Modesto has been in a while.  The rain and the storme have been thumping.  People from all over the world are visiting to see the amazing billions of almond blossoms.  The rivers are running, and the skies will start to get nicer and the days longer as we spring forward on March 10. The downtown restaurant patios are opening, there’s more live music and the colors of the camellias and the flavors of spring will be something to experience.    Here is how you can explore the many things going on.  Don’t forget to check www.modestoview.com for our calendar of ideas.  If your event isn’t here, please email us at events@modestoview.com

Camelia Festival

I guess the saying is now February showers bring March flowers. Friends, the camellias are amazing this year.  The camellia bushes at my house are exploding in color. Did you know that some 100-year old camellias may reach 25 feet tall?  Wow.   This year, the Modesto Camellia society will be celebrating this amazing flower with their showcase at the Gallo Winery administration building. You will be amazed at the brilliant colors, the soft pinks and award winning blooms from all over the region.  Check your own plants, you may have a winner!

Pollinator Festival

Magic, Nature or both?

It all starts with the pollinators.  Without these hard-working bees, this amazing blossom show would not happen and produce fruit and nuts. That’s why you see the boxes of bees everywhere in the early spring.  Bees are increasingly at risk as our climate changes, and we need to protect this ecosystem.  Modesto has a Pollinator Festival in the LaLoma Native Garden on April 13 where you can learn about these helpful creatures.  Also, check out the Pollinator Mural by Phil Murillo at 10th & J Street at the Goat Bar and Gril.  Help your own eco system and get some native local honey at Rodin Market downtown at 10th and J or at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market, Thursday and Saturdays,  8 am – 1 pm 16th St between, H and I.

Go hike a trail?

One of the most fun things to do is ride, walk or run the trail system here in Modesto. We have Hetch Hetchy, the Virginia Corridor and the Mensinger Trail along Dry Creek.  There are so many places to start and stop, eateries can be found along the Virginia and there are playgrounds and picnic areas.  Don’t forget there is a disc golf course along the Mensinger Trail at East La Loma Park. Soon, the Virginia Corridor will connect with the Hetch Hetchy and there are big plans to connect the Virginia with the Mensinger.

Speaking of Yosemite.

If you haven’t ever been, you have really missed out.   Modesto is the gatway to Yosemite up the Highway 132, the John Muir Highway.  The grandeur of the valley in spring is literally awesome.  The sheer granite, the meadows, the Merced River, carving its way through and best of all, the waterfalls.  You really must see them for yourselves in the run-off season from Mar to May.  Check with www.yosemite.org

Spring Skiing

Well, it’s “technically” spring skiing this month, but there is one big snowpack right now.  Our local ski areas Dodge and Bear and less than 2 hours away and now are owned by the same company so you can score a Cali Pass and shred both of these mountains.   Best of all, you can go rock the slopes and be back here in Modesto for a nice evening out here in town.   How good is this?

When’s Spring Break?

Go hike a Mural?

Modesto has a wonderful selection of murals, some even 5 stories tall! Our friends at Visit Modesto have prepared a guided mural tour that is great for a walking day.    Most of these are in our downtown core, but you can expand your range a bit and even see the huge mural at Camp 4 on Needham featuring the legendary Yosemite climber, Modesto’s Royal Robbins. www.visitmodesto.com

Spring break from school moves around as Easter moves.  Some districts are trying better for consistent time off for the kids so you can plan your outings.  For Modesto City Schools and Sylvan Schools, spring break is March 18-22   There is so much to do within 2 hours of Modesto, you can do it all from your home base.

Easter 2024

For those that observe, Easter Sunday is March 31, just slipping into March with Good Friday on the 29th.  For those kids, don’t miss the Easter Bunny egg hunt at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market on March 30.

Note: the Thursday Farmer’s Markets begin on April 4. Be sure to set you’re clocks forward, Sunday, March 10, 2024 to Daylight Savings Time!

Celebrating Donny Wallace

A long successful sports chapter has closed as Modesto High Athletic director Donny Wallace hangs up his whistle.  Modesto native and former star athlete, Donny returned to coaching after school.   In his first year, he put a championship team together and a great career began.  Donny has coached many different sports and has been a vital part of the Modesto High spirit and has influenced many players that also became coaches.  Many friends and family all came out to celebrate Donny in the gym including members of the championship

team, former students, fellow coaches and faculty.  Congrats on a great career Donny Wallace.  Photos: Donny and Lori Wallace and members of the 1998 championship team.

Coaching for the future

“A lot of people notice when you succeed. But they don’t see what it takes to get there. That’s why I always vote for the underdog in the brackets”.   There are few more enthusiastic people about our local sports than Coach Colin McBride.  Local girl’s basketball really has a champion as this enthusiastic leader brings people together and uniquely, coaches at most of our local high schools.   Colin is Modesto’s coach, and has been key to many of our local high school’s athletic departments.  This year, Coach McBride will be coaching Enochs Freshman Baseball, MoHi Varsity football and just finished MoHi girls basketball.  Coach is an avid supporter of our local dining and music scene and you can see him on his bicycle as he supports our city.  Thanks Coach!

WALK A MILE VIEW

Walk A Mile Team Fundraising

Our high heels are on and we are training to “Walk a Mile” in her shoes.  Why?  We have no use for domestic abuse.   This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind.  We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community.  The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times.  Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe.

This is why Sierra Pacific and ModestoView are Walking a Mile in their shoes to raise money for Haven.  We hope that you will dig down deep and support our team.   We will be walking Saturday morning, April 6. Please make a quick contribution so we can make a difference.  Plus, I am sure you get a good laugh watching men struggle to do what women do all day long, but anyone can walk in any kind of shoe, because domestic violence must be stopped and victims protected, no matter who they are.   Tell a friend.Walk with us! Team Sierra Pacific / ModestoView. www.havenwalkamile.org/

HALL OF FAME VIEW

Modesto High Hall of Fame

My family celebrates Modesto through the lens of Modesto High School.   Even as a Beyer ’79 grad, our family has always seen MoHi as something really special in our community, both as Modesto’s first high-school and as a big part of our family history beginning with Gertrude Kendall (Truman) in 1936). For years, Modesto High has been celebrating their Hall of Fame alumni.  From Max Foster (’23) Ernest (’27), Julio Gallo (’29), Marie Gallo (’53) to Gene Widfield (’45) Harve Presnell (’50) to Kenny Roberts (’70) and Erin Cafaro (’01) and many more. The history and the accomplishments of Modesto High alumni is really special.   Our family is especially proud this year as our Pop, Michael McNulty (’61) will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  He has been a key person in Modesto’s business community, played a big role in celebrating Modesto in the Modesto JayCees, generous fund raiser hosting an annual Sierra Pacific fund raiser that has delivered nearly $750,000 back into local non-profits.  On top of that, he was the founder of our company and for me personally, a wonderful role-model and mentor as well as an amazing parent, grand father and great grandfather who will be celebrated forever.  Please join us this year and celebrate all of the amazing inductees at the Elks Lodge to celebrate the 2024 Modesto High Hall of Fame .

It is unlawful for any person to own, conduct, operate, maintain, or participate therein any place of entertainment in the City of Modesto without first having obtained an Entertainment Permit. Failure to obtain an Entertainment Permit can result in penalties under Municipal Code 4-1.420.  It is necessary to complete a Business Entertainment Permit Application to obtain your Entertainment Permit. That sounds a little intimidating and sometimes permitting can seem like a challenge. The cost of an entertainment permit is $250 along with a $25 application fee, if you need to expedite the process it will cost you $650. If you are a nonprofit the fees are $25 and $400 for expedited service. All fees are non-refundable. These fees are the same for events and festivals. Be aware that the process takes some time and you will need to go in front of the Entertainment Commission which meets twice a month when needed. In my 8-plus years of being on the commission, we have never denied a permit, we often ask for more details or make suggestions to make the process easier or events safer, but our goal is always to help with the process. Entertainment falls under the umbrella of the Economic Development Department of the City of Modesto, for more information you can contact, Cue Tan at: ctan@modestogov.com.

Some businesses that are exempt from an entertainment permit include:

• Any establishment, venue, or assemblage of seventy-five persons or less, as described in the maximum occupancy load of the business.

• Entertainment is provided for guests at a private event, such as a wedding reception, banquet, worship services, or where the event takes place at a property that is a residential occupancy.

• Entertainment consists of ambient or incidental music provided for guests or patrons by musicians such as a piano player, harpist, strolling violinist, mariachi band, traditional jukebox, karaoke, guitarist, or band. However, if there is an admission charge required to observe or attend such entertainment, the music will not be considered ambient or incidental.

I am currently the acting Vice Chair of the Entertainment Commission until a replacement is appointed if you are interested in becoming a member of the Entertainment or any other Modesto Commission you can apply here www. modestogov.com/2762/Applicationfor-Boards-Commissions-Commi get involved and be part of a better Modesto. There was a wonderful musical tribute to the late John Shaw musician who died recently. The event was at the Twin River Saloon with hundreds of well-wishers and musicians coming out. We hope that his family continues to be supported now and, in the future, RIP John Shaw of the Whisky Skulls you will be missed.

The Blue Monday Party is back on March 11th at Urbano. The band features John Burt Sax, Cortez Flores drums, Raul Slaps Bass and myself Eric Benson Keyboards, special guest Gene Radino Jazz guitarist. The alumni also include John Adey Bass, Conrad Johnson Bass, Dave Hawks’ drums, and Andrew Rosenblum Sax. We have had some high school horn players that have come down that can play some Jazz.  We also would like to thank Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson for giving their loving support and sponsorship to the Blue Monday Scene, which yours truly appreciates! Please come down for some music, food, and a full bar,

can’t do it without you! We need more places to play live music, especially in the downtown area. Any ideas or ways to make it happen let me know.

New to the scene will be a dedicated comedy club opening in Manteca.

Roman of Roman on the River has been doing some comedy shows in Modesto and hopefully, the momentum will continue to support some much-needed humor in our area, stay tuned!

I know I’m preaching to the choir but we need more venues for the arts and music in our community. Anyone who wants to conspire with me let me know, there is a felt need and the time is now!

Some great shows at Gallo Center but also check out some great venues out of town:  The Newman Theatre, Vinhose Tapas Bar in Merced, Yoshi’s Oakland best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center Santa Cruz, and Piedmont Piano Company, the Back Door and the Sound Room located in Oakland.

Long Distance Running Tips.

I’ve been racing for over 20 years. If I knew then what I know now, I would have changed my running skills altogether. No one ever told me that running long distances for many years can have negative effects on your body as you age. Don’t get me wrong, I love to run. It was my forte. In the triathlon, I was always able to chase the leaders in the swim and hold my own on the bike, but when it came to the running part, that’s when I would start to pick them off to win the race. Truth be told, it wasn’t a big deal to train like an Olympian if you have grand illusions of being a middle-aged Olympian. For recreational racing, I’d say don’t race or run a distance longer than a 10K. It isn’t the actual race that is detrimental to your body, it’s all the training that leads to race day. If you’re going to be running in this year’s Modesto Marathon, I have a few tips to save your race and body. Start to taper down on your running 7-14 days before race day depending on your running skills. Stop running altogether 5 days before race day. Walk if you want to stay loose, maybe 2-3 miles. Remember to walk!

With nutrition, start to hydrate 7 days before race day. You know you’re good to go

when the color of your urine is a straw-like color. Don’t drink alcohol 7 days before race day. Eat as clean as you can, focusing on clean carbs. Dinner the night before race day, at least for me, would be a large baked potato with sour cream, cheese, and chives, and I always eat the skin of the potato. I like to include a large salad with slices of hardboiled eggs. For the 3 days before race day, try to stay away from meat or anything that might lay heavy on your digestive tract. You want to feel light as a feather on race day, if you know what I mean, without getting too graphic. Morning breakfast on race day, try to stay away from anything too heavy. I always enjoy a huge blueberry muffin or two with a small amount of coffee. During the race, be mindful of not pushing yourself too hard. If you start to hurt, recognize it and adjust so that you’re able to finish the race. In the photo shown, when I used to be the DJ and MC for The Modesto Marathon, I instantly recognized a runner in trouble. Having much experience with running, I noticed right away his distress as he approached the finish line. I quickly jumped away from my microphone, from calling the runners’ names, and without a second to spare, I caught him before he fell on his face. I helped him cross the finish line and handed him over to EMTs for an ambulance ride to the hospital. After the race, he didn’t even remember finishing. So, pace yourself and know your limits. Just like the saying “slow and steady wins your race.” You have worked so hard for many months leading up to the race. Don’t rob yourself of the excitement and a most memorable finish. Good luck runners!

POETRY VIEW

Here we are in March, continuing our quest to discover the thoughts inside of people’s heads, from short form Haiku to the long form.  One of the coolest blocks in town is J Street between 13th and 14th.  From the Intermission, the Jewel, the State, Noah’s to labs of Lofi, there are good things happening.  Best of all, you can do this. There are writer’s nights and Haiku nights.  I had fun going and trying out some of my words.  I didn’t win, but I got out there, put myself in front of people and have it a shot.   You can do it too.

Estelle Peck Ishigo (1899-1990)

“Imprisoned at the foot of the mountain, towering in its silence over the barren waste, we searched its gaunt face for the mystery of our destiny.” –from Lone Heart Mountain

While scouring dust swipes the walls, splinter points stab the backs of their hands. She sketches the lives in splinters, the wind-blown dust and rough-hewn rooms.

Two rings smoothed by time in miscegenational exile sketch gold light. Behind the barbed wire they stand, hand in hand, watching three kites in the sky.

A movie theatre, that special meeting place where strangers gather to be immersed in the ancient arts of comedy and drama, in those compelling, collective dreams of its people and of other cultures.

The Great Depression, when artful escapes from harsh times were in desperate demand.

The master architect S. Charles Lee designed the State with Art Deco splendor, with towers of sconces, goldleaf florals, hand-painted murals of gazelles and greyhounds leaping along the walls, all for the builder Harry Brown, who brought Lee’s dreams onto J Street, the lines of his blueprint designs to make real with concrete results, down to the show that begins outside. The doors opened in 1934, on Christmas Day, a much-needed community gift.

Well past that century, and into this one, one by one, most of Lee’s 400 theatres fell into disrepair, replaced by the giants, or love lost for buildings of the past; one by one, many fine theatres came down. But the State remained and rose up, with its yesteryear beauty intact, with clear visions to join the future.

First, the movie-house turned into theatre with a stage supporting live comedy, opera, local musicians, poetry, and concerts from traveling shows. Next came the bright replenishment of murals in both lobby and house. Then came The Jewel, its little cousin, then the Intermission, a cozy space for patrons.

The State paved its back path into the future, both a thoroughly modern movie house and an icon for the styles of the past.

So, how are we different from ‘30’s patrons, except in dress and changing culture? We too

share in their need for meaningful escapes. Our Modesto movie theatre, a unique place where strangers gather to be immersed, to laugh and to wonder, together to dream of the tales of our people and of faraway lands.

Tai Chi for Children in Modesto

Good news :  On January 29th two elementary schools in Modesto brought Tai Chi to their after-school program. It’s been going very well, after only a couple of weeks the kids are having fun and are acting more relaxed. They pay attention and it appears that they love disciplined play. At one point, when one child didn’t know how to do a specific movement, another kid seemed very happy to help that kid how to do it.  One of the best benefits of Tai Chi for kids and adults alike, is that it helps to develop self-confidence, a sense of self-worth as well as a humble attitude. It would be great for the relationship between parents and their kids if they could study and practice Tai Chi together!

We live in challenging times that have been stressful not only for adults but for children as well. As far as we know Modesto

is currently the only city to bring something for children that can strengthen them mentally as well as physically. We found a lovely book with beautiful and colorful illustrations called “T’ai Chi for Kids”  for Ages 4-6 written by master teacher Stuart Olsen who said he was “inspired by his own son’s excitement with Tai Chi at the age of only three”.  He writes: “Tai Chi is fun for children because they can imagine they are playing with birds, tigers, monkeys, and dragons. They can even pretend they are flying. However, children also reap the many health, learning, and social benefits of Tai Chi - focused attention, enhanced creativity, and improved balance, circulation, and overall health.

The answer to ensuring that our children do not grow up with violent tendencies lies not in teaching them how to fight but in teaching them how not to get hurt, how to yield, how to be aware of their environment. Real strength comes from an awareness of both themselves and their surroundings”. For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
