It seems Rockin’ Holiday just started, but after 9 beautiful nights loaded with Rockin’ snow, music, fun, a 50 ft Rockin’ tree, Rockin’ Santa and a magic holiday, here we are. So without any further delay, Happy New Year! Let’s get to work in 2026! ModestoView celebrates the good in our community and all of the opportunities we have, but it doesn’t mean that there isn’t work to be done to change our various trajectories. Cities like Modesto have to work harder to show what we can be. We can’t waste time of funds so we need to have a clear vision and most importantly execute. There lies our challenge and we all need to be vigilant that the organizations that are charged with moving us forward, are doing so. This is why the new Dos Rios Culteral District will so important. Many people tell me that we are a broken record about our support for downtown

Modesto, and to that I reply, “guilty as charged”. Here’s why. Cities with healthy downtowns are successful. When the downtown is not vibrant and active, it takes a lot of the rest of a city down. Downtown needs to be safe, well lit, with a great variety of business, things to do, see, eat and hear. That’s the part that is exciting. That’s why we are ”getting to work” in our feature spread, with new initiatives and new focus that should move us forward and allow us to team up to make it better. As always, your thoughts about where we should be going are important I would love to hear them to forward to those that can do something. Our city staff and City council work for you, the people, and it’s important that you get involved, join a commission or committee and have a seat at the table. This should be all of our New Year’s resolutions. November and December were filled with excitement as we got a new baseball team. ModestoView was very active in the

renaming process which resulted in the Modesto Roadsters with an exciting launch from the Graffiti USA Museum. I have gotten to know the team owner Dave Heller, and I am very excited for the energy it will bring to Modesto. Plus, our new rivals will be the Oakland Ballers. This is going to be fun and the games start in late May.. Thank you to so many of you that love ModestoView. I’m really glad you do. Publishers Note: The Downtown Streets Team made a positive impact on Modesto, our cleanliness and our ability to have a work program help people transition from the streets to a better life. When that project folded, The Modesto Gospel Mission stepped up and teamed up with the City of Modesto to build a better local project, hopefully that will be sustainable for many years. We invited Jason Conway to tell us about it and how you can support this important civic mission - Chris Murphy

Hope Works

In January 2026, Modesto will see the launch of HopeWorks, a new work reentry program designed to provide immediate employment opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness, while improving the cleanliness and livability of our city. HopeWorks builds on the proven model of the former Downtown Streets Team, while introducing a renewed local focus and expanded partnerships. HopeWorks represents a collaborative approach between the City of Modesto, United Way, and the Modesto Gospel Mission. HopeWorks is a paid work program that offers unhoused individuals the opportunity to earn minimum wage through structured litter abatement and beautification efforts across the City of Modesto. Operated by

the Modesto Gospel Mission, participants will work in supervised teams, focusing on cleaning public spaces, sidewalks, corridors, and downtown areas. For many individuals’ experiencing homelessness, barriers such as lack of recent work history, gaps in identification, or unresolved legal and health challenges can make traditional employment difficult to access. HopeWorks is designed to meet people where they are at. By providing immediate income and a predictable schedule, the program helps participants rebuild confidence, establish strong work habits, and take meaningful steps toward long-term stability. Employment through HopeWorks is more than just a paycheck. Participants will be connected to case management and supportive services that can help address housing, healthcare, documentation, and

other barriers that stand in the way of lasting change. The goal is not simply shortterm work, but to create a pathway forward out of homelessness —one that restores dignity and provides structure while participants pursue permanent employment and housing solutions. The benefits of HopeWorks extend to the larger community as well. Residents and businesses will see cleaner streets, improved public spaces, and a visible commitment to compassionate, practical solutions to homelessness. Litter abatement crews will be a consistent presence throughout the city, demonstrating that progress is possible when accountability and opportunity are paired together. As Modesto continues to seek balanced, responsible responses to homelessness, HopeWorks offers a promising model— one that values work, restores hope, and creates tangible benefits for both participants and the broader community. Time to get a start on those new creative projects and put those art supplies you got in December to use. Modesto is a creative area, and as announced by the California Arts Council on December 13, we are the Dos Rios Arts and Cultural District. We are one of ten districts added to create twenty-four across the state. Ours. Ours is named for the confluence of the Tuolumne and Stanislaus Rivers. Unlike the Downtown Merced Arts and Cultural District, we can be confused with nearby Dos Rios State Park out on Shiloh Rd, way out west. District designation includes grant money, led by the Stanislaus Arts Council. Our district profile should be available this month at www.caculturaldistricts.org Other unfinished business from the past year includes Virginia White Art showing at the Kruse Lucas Gallery on Tully Road. The Stanislaus Arts Council Winter show “Our Collective Illumination at 1316 J Street. Jennifer Fosgate’s show at the Carnegie Art Center Lobby gallery will finish on January 10. Before Christmas, as happens every year, Jordi Camps celebrated another birthday and has great new art he has painted at Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery. Shout-out to other regulars hosting art: Preservation Coffee on J Street, Dragonfly Art for Life further up J Street, Bookish at Roseburg Square, and Modesto Artists Movement. No Art Walk this month, but it will resume on February 15. New business for artists: the Dorothy Indelicato 36th Fine Art Show is open for in-person entry and applications at the Delicato Winery Tasting Room from January 2 to 16, with the show opening on February 1 and running through February 21. The Stanislaus Artist Open Studio weekend is set for April 25 and 26. Artist entry applications are open this month, with a January 30 deadline to get on the map. Carnegie will also open “On the Edge: Abstraction at Work,” a show I entered, and I am awaiting word on whether I will be selected. This show runs in the Lobby Gallery from January 20 to April 25. Bill Harris opens a solo show on February 10 as Valley Focus’ featured artist. A call for artists for the “Reunion- Festival of Arts” series of events at the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, which will feature art on display and for sale, of alumni of the Mistlin Gallery and Chartreuse Muse, show one opens February 6, and applicants’ grids or pedestals for display on a first-come, first-served basis. More on this next month, as details on cabaret and local musicians booked to specific dates. Modesto Art Academy offers kids winter camps and class information at Classes@ MoArtAcademy.org and on the website at moartacademy.org. This nonprofit art school is at 500 Scenic Drive, Modesto. art without an agenda. No pressure. No expectations. Just time, space, and community. We’ll also host Comedy Night (Tuesday, January 20), because laughter matters. Life is full of grief and joy at the same time, and learning to speak the language of laughter is just as important as learning to name our emotions. Whether you’re there to laugh or to take the mic, Tuesday Night Open Mic Comedy is a great night to relax and release some of life’s tension through humor. Landmark 101:

How You Can Preserve By Harrison Power Modesto History @historyharrison

While Modesto has changed greatly and lost much of its storied past over the last several decades, there is still plenty of history around town to learn about and celebrate. Designated landmarks and structures help tell the story of Modesto’s growth and the people and places who shaped it, but that is not where Modesto’s history starts and stops. What about the classic buildings, homes, and important sites which are not protected? That’s where the Landmark Preservation Program comes in, which establishes the criteria and process for the creation of new local landmarks. If you think your own home or building may be eligible for landmark consideration, take the leap into the New Year and learn more about what you can do to preserve a piece of Modesto’s history! Historic structures, natural resources, and other iconic sites which hold significance based on local history, architecture, culture, and other criteria are likely eligible for landmark designation as part of the City of Modesto’s Landmark Preservation Program. Overseen by the City’s Planning Division and supported by the Landmark Preservation Commission, the program aims to recognize and celebrate the history and noteworthy architecture around us, and the culturally impactful places which make Modesto unique. When considering whether your property meets landmark criteria, there are several resources to look into when researching a site’s significance. The McHenry Museum, the McHenry Museum and Historical Society, the Stanislaus Library, the Genealogical Society of Stanislaus County, the Modesto Art Museum, and the Modesto Bee archives are all great resources to learn more about your favorite building in town, buildings lost over the FOLLOW US:

years, or even your own home! The City of Modesto’s Historic Resources Survey, which focuses primarily on the commercial district of the downtown grid, can be a great tool for research as well. The Survey does not account for every building or address in the historic core of town, but is worth checking if starting from a blank slate. Once potential site significance and supporting documentation is confirmed, the bulk of the information necessary for compiling an application for local landmark designation is ready to go. With the site significance materials prepared, contact the City of Modesto Planning Division to learn more about the landmark designation process. A Uniform Application would be completed and signed by the property owner or authorized agent of the owner, submitted along with the filing fee. If the site is not listed in the Historic Resources Survey, try reviewing the survey records completed by the Stanislaus Historical Society in the 1980’s. A DPR 523A/B form (historic nomination record) is required as a supplement to the city application. If you hit any snags or roadblocks through the application process, the Planning Department can provide guidance on any necessary next steps to ensure proper completion for consideration. Landmarking a significant site or community icon to honor Modesto history, with owner support, should not be a complicated endeavor. Historic preservation is an active and ongoing process, rooted in advocacy by the community and a commitment by property owners. In Modesto, this commitment is vital to ensure that architectural gems of all styles and places steeped in local history are maintained for future generations. Back before the prohibition, a town wasn’t really considered a town until it had its own brewery. Then, when alcohol was banned, we lost our little breweries. We live in exciting times, as we have gone back to our roots, with breweries opening up throughout the Central Valley. Take a tour of the breweries in Stanislaus County. All of these breweries have become the much-needed home for live music, so check their calendar to see who is playing.

Taking Inventory

After the noise of December, I notice how much space opens when the calendar turns. As a songwriter, that space can feel both inviting and uncomfortable. There’s a pull to define the year immediately, to sustain momentum, to prove that I’m still creating. Winter, however, asks something different of me. January makes me want to take inventory. Unfinished songs, abandoned sessions, loose lyrics strewn through my notebook or on my phone. Some of them still feel alive. Others feel like they belong to the past, but I search for new ways for them to resonate. Recharging old work can be just as meaningful as finishing something new. Winter has a way of slowing my writing down. The songs that arrive in January tend to be more inward, and I don’t find myself preoccupied with the outcome or “product” of my creative work. I used to think this was a call to reflect, to generate new ideas for future endeavors. But I’ve learned that it is more of a time for listening. Connecting with myself, but also tuning in to the world around me, and being inspired by how my experiences resonate with the collective. I’m curious how other local artists approach the quiet season, and what this time asks of them creatively. “The holidays can make me feel like the black sheep, so I chase the sun. Walking to the river, lighting fires, trying to hold onto warmth. I hibernate a little, cook soups and stews, spend time with my kids, and keep

It’s the middle of winter, it’s a hazy sky and we can wish to be somewhere

sunny and warm and fresh. Think blue water, and sunny skies. It’s a new year and as our theme is “Let’s Get to Work”, we thought some clean eats would be perfect, that are super delicious. You always read about these “blue zones” where people live to be over 100 and they appear to live to be over 100 and drink wine and eat mediterranean food. Can’t argue with that, so here are a couple of great ideas to get the year off to a clean and tasty start.

But one of my favorites is the Salmon Skew. I’m pretty sure that this is one of the only marinated salmon dishes in town. Perfectly cooked with a lemon butter caper dill sauce and the right spices make this one of my favorite healthy flavors. One of the best sides around is the house pickled vegetables and of course their lavash and butter or hummus. They make a family sized dinner as well as their lula pops and so many more offerings. This month we were excited to connect with Sarah Aaronson, Executive Director of the Prospect Theater Project (PTP) to learn about the ways they are fostering creative arts, connecting diverse voices in the community, and finding innovative ways to engage entertainment audiences and downtown in 2026. Let’s learn more from Sarah!

life, I’m an independent meeting planner, which often takes me to New York City. I make it a tradition to catch at least one great show whenever I’m there. It’s always inspiring—and yes, I come home with way too many Playbills! That same passion is what drew me to Prospect Theater Project: helping bring that magic to our local community.

ModestoView: Tell us a little about your experience in the arts and what drew you to the Prospect Theater Project. Sarah Aaronson: I don’t have a formal theater background, but I’ve always been a passionate audience member and advocate for the arts. Growing up, my mom and I loved local plays in Modesto and later shows at ACT and the Curran in San Francisco—those experiences hooked me on the magic of live theater. My commitment deepened when my son joined drama at Downey High. Watching the confidence and friendships he gained reinforced theater’s transformative power. So when I was invited to join the Prospect Theater Project board, I jumped at the chance to help build a vibrant arts community—a decision that still inspires me today. In my professional

MV: How does your role as Executive Director allow you to lead PTP in both artistic and administrative capacities? We can imagine it’s a hard balance to do both! SA: Luckily, we have pros like Jack Souza and now Laura Dickinson-Turner leading the artistic side of PTP. My role is to make sure they have the resources and marketing to bring their vision to life. Balancing everything can be a challenge, but my years in the hospitality industry—working for brands like The Ritz-Carlton—combined with 20+ years as a corporate meeting and event planner prepared me well. I love managing projects, solving problems, and keeping things on track. That experience makes me budget-minded and resourceful, which helps Prospect thrive financially

while supporting its artistic vision. MV: Do you have a favorite production that you’ve seen at the Prospect? SA: That’s a tough one because there have been so many incredible productions! If I had to choose, I’d pick a recent favorite: The Revolutionists. It was bold, hilarious, and completely outrageous. The costumes were stunning, the performances sharp and witty—it captured the spirit of theater at its best. Unforgettable! MV: How do you see Prospect’s role in the local community, and how are you and the PTP team working to strengthen that connection? SA: What I love about Prospect is its innovative spirit. Our main focus will always be producing plays, but we also recognize that our intimate black box space offers an incredible sound experience—so much so that local and regional musicians regard it as one of the best venues to perform. Leaning into that strength, we introduced a quarterly music series featuring The Vibes, and this year we partnered with Off the Air to bring even more live music to

Modesto. These efforts broaden our reach and attract new audiences while staying true to our mission of creating vibrant arts experiences. PTP’s secret sauce is the people behind the scenes and the incredible talent on the stage. That combination is what makes every production—and every event—special. Our volunteers give their time and energy to make it all possible, and we truly couldn’t do this without them. Their commitment, along with our creative programming and partnerships, keeps the arts thriving in Modesto and strengthens the connection between theater and community. MV: How does PTP choose which productions to put on each season? SA: Our Artistic Director, Laura Dickinson-Turner, curates the season with incredible skill. She considers our space, the local talent pool, and the stories that need to be told. Laura blends comedy, drama, and thought-provoking works that challenge and inspire. Her choices keep Prospect fresh, relevant, and deeply engaging. Modesto is lucky to have her leading the artistic charge!

party! Our exhibit, The Color of Red: Art in Conversation, will transform the Artist Lab into a gallery of bold, Rothko-inspired works. And I’m one of the lucky artists to be included alongside incredible local talent like Nicole Slater, Jordy Camps, Chella, and more. Being part of this exhibit is a full-circle moment for me—it’s another way to celebrate the creativity and community I love. You can wander through, soak up the color, and even vote for your favorite piece. It’s theater meets gallery meets community celebration—and honestly, it’s going to be a blast!

We’re also proud to partner with community-minded businesses—from Lo-Fi Dining and Bar and Stanislaus Arts Council to local food trucks, Save Mart, Valley First Credit Union, and Gallo. Their support helps us keep theater accessible and affordable. Looking ahead, we’re excited to collaborate with the LGBTQ+ community for our spring production of Stop Kiss, a powerful story about a kiss between two women in 1990s San Francisco. It’s an opportunity to create meaningful dialogue and broaden representation on our stage. Picture this: students filling the house for a pay-what-you-can night, local businesses hosting pre-show pop-ups, and community organizations joining forces to make every production feel like a celebration of Modesto’s creativity. That’s the future we’re building—where partnerships turn theater into a shared experience that connects us all. MV: If you could wave a magic wand, what would PTP look like five years from now? We were inspired by Molly Souza as she is painting and getting ready for her upcoming directorial production RED at the innovative Prospect Theatre. The Prospect is one of those places that delivers locally creativity and is key inspiration for our future and this new production is teamed up with Stanislaus Arts Council and local artists. It takes teamwork from all parts of our community.

So, Let’s Get to Work and make this year successful What will work in Modesto for 2026?.

People around the world don’t just come to Modesto. They need to learn about it. This is even true for the people that live here. ModestoView has always been about local, and now we have many groups teaming up to really make a difference in 2026 so our message is loud and clear. As Sam Pierstorff of the Modesto Artists Movement exclaims,

“Modesto is the next great American art and culture city”

We have a new Cultural Arts District!

This is the result of amazing teamwork between the Stanislaus Arts Council, the Gallo Center and Visit Modesto, linking up our cultural cornerstones like the Graffiti USA Museum, Modesto Children’s Museum, the State Theatre, Central West Ballet, Opera Modesto and more. The result is, after a long application and selection process, Modesto was selected along with 9 other new districts in California. The “Dos Rios Cultural District” is the only new district in the Central Valley. Modesto is becoming the “other California”, where our Performing Arts, Museums, Cars, Cuisine, Agriculture are something that are attracting people to Modesto and it is key to new jobs, business and very important tourism income. We are getting more pins in the map!

Why does this matter?

We have to stand up and shout about what’s good in Modesto. It’s that simple, but we need to shout out a common message so it punches through. California is more than beaches, Disneyland, LA and SF. Winter is the perfect time to travel and wander our area. Life seems a bit slower in January as we call catch our breaths and take time to see the world around us. The last week of December delivered a ton of snow, rain and wind and that means the

and Prince Charming team up with the State Theatre and Opera Modesto. This brings working together to a new magical level. Modesto is fortunate to have a professional opera company and they team up in January to present the magic Cinderella, story reimagined as an operetta by French composer Pauline Viardot. There will be two matinee operas at 2 pm Jan 17 and 18th. On Friday night Cinderella and Prince Charming will host the Disney classic Cinderella and guest are invited to dress for the ball as their favorite Disney character and sing along. Snacks will be provided. We are excited for this team up at the historic State Theatre.

On the road and up the road

There are three main highways that take you into the winter wonderland located 2 hours to the east. Make the most of the last days of spring break and head to the hills. After a dry fall, it’s finally ski season. Our two local resorts have snow and don’t miss out. Highway 4 delivers Bear Valley at 7,200 ft with both and lower and upper mountain, capping out at 8,500 ft. Highway 108 delivers Dodge Ridge at 6,600 ft with an 8,200 ft summit and is the closest to Modesto. Highway 120 delivers one of the most unique ski areas, Badger Pass in Yosemite, one of only three lifted ski areas in a national park. You can take a shuttle from Yosemite Village or make the beautiful drive up Glacier Point road. ViewCrew tip: Teach your kids to ski early. There are easy bunny hills and kids 5 and under ski free at Bear and Dodge and 6 and under at Badger.

Plotting for 2026

It’s been a year of great writing in Modesto! We’ve worked on our novels, workshopped our pitches, read our poems, gathered to tell stories and did a whole lot of writerly things together. Here’s what we’re plotting in 2025: --Monday night Write Club meet-ups at Bookish with Julia Washington and myself, where we practice craft, write, share and give feedback. Anywhere from five to fifteen writers show up, laptops and notebooks in tow, to dedicate time to their projects. Roosevelt/La Loma: The old school rivalry between these schools has a fun season. “ Big Stick” and the Teddy Bears “ Big Bear “ and the “ Little Bear” The “ Big Stick”. Roosevelt flag football team won the first games and tied La Loma in their 2nd match up, there for Roosevelt will keep the “Big Stick” . For girls’ basketball, Roosevelt took game one for both grades. The 2nd match up Roosevelt 7th garde took the win 14-4 over and brought the “ Little Bear” back to Roosevelt, the 8th grade game La Loma got the win 17-10 and will keep the “ Big Bear” going into the fall of girls’ volleyball season.

Girls Basketball:

The city of Modesto just wrapped up its local junior high school girls’ basketball seasons and league championship tournament, too. The following schools competed in both the 7th and grade 8th grade tournament: Hanshaw, Glick, Prescott, Yolo, Mark Twain, La Loma and Roosevelt. Glick junior high won the 7th grade championship in a 31-17 win over Roosevelt. Yolo junior high from Newman won the 8th grade championship in a double overtime win over Roosevelt 37-33. Congrats to our local junior high, players and coaches on their incredible seasons and to our new tournament champions as well.

Enochs: Chris Ramsay leads his team to 7-3 overall, with junior, Aliva Pierce with 124 points and 51 assets. Downey: Coach Nixon team is lead by sophomore, Danica Flores with 111 points and senior, Zadie Carraway with 86 rebounds. Johansen: Head coach, Derrick McLaughlin has team led by seniors, Amelia Medearis with 79 points & Danna Singh with 21 steals Boys Basketball: Johansen: Head coach Chris Salazar team (7-2) overall is senior heavy with Jonny Chavez 88 points, Ivan Martinez 87 points, Julian Davis 72 points. It is a magic Cinderella weekend in Modesto with the State Theatre and Opera Modesto hosted by Cinderella and Prince Charming to screen the Disney film Cinderella. MAMA VIEW Kick the New Year Off On a Good Note By Middagh Goodwin

A recent social media post emphasized the importance of a professional headshot when booking comedy gigs. Of course, this is true for any performer aspiring to do more than open mic nights. Now, no one is saying to go out and spend thousands or even hundreds of dollars on promo photos(but if you have that kind of money, I will put you in contact with our very own MJ Mangano). We are talking for comedians and solo acts: a clean shot, torso up. For bands, one that has you all looking in the same direction and, well, looking like a band. Something that will represent you on flyers, newspaper articles, ads, etc. Please make sure you have high-resolution files of these that can be downloaded or sent to bookers and press alike, along with any logos (PNG) or samples of your work, songs for bands, and short clips for comedians. All at the highest quality you can create and afford. Musicians, it is better to have a single well-recorded song than 10 that are not.

Comedians work on getting a good video that showcases what they can do. You don’t need to create a YouTube channel, but if you do, please ensure it has high-quality content (the same applies to all your social media). You want to represent yourself as professionally as possible. As you get more gigs and have more money, invest in better promotional materials, such as headshots or band photos, recorded music, and videos. For musicians, good video content is essential these days. Bookers want to see how well you perform and how you interact with the crowd. These are the things that not just bookers and promoters see first, but also your potential fans. You can print extra photos to sell or give away to fans, and videos and music can be great perks on Patreon or to give people an idea of what they can expect from live shows. One more thing that is a big help not just to bookers but to your fans and the press alike: make sure your events are updated on your social media and website. I personally input all the local gigs in the ModestoView calendar, and it is the same thing every month, trying to track down dates before we go to print. Oftentimes, I do not see event details until the day of. Let us help you promote and give your fans a chance to plan on going to see you. Email events@modestoview.com

This album(or an album) has been a long time coming from the Flowers, and could have ended up being a totally different collection of songs. The Flowers started recording an album around five years ago, with plans to release it on vinyl, but had to reboot and start over when their house and home studio burned down in April of 2023. It took a while for the band to get back up to speed, buying new instruments and gear to record on. In that time, they kept writing new songs, and when the time came, a new album was in the works to be recorded. The Flowers (a self-proclaimed group

of “freaks, mutants, & buffoons” from Modesto, CA) released their debut Vinyl Record, For The Freaks, on December 5th, 2025, at The Prospect Theater Project. Fun. Thousands of kids met Rockin’ Santa who delivered each a candy cane during their free visits and free photos. The Rockin’ Tree performed nightly in the Plaza and lit up a big show for thousands of people opening night after the Celebration of Lights Parade. Kids of all ages enjoyed the Rockin’ Snow shows that turned 10th St into a winter wonderland and even made for snow-filled finish line for the Spirit of Giving Run. 12 different bands played for the people and Modesto’s holiday tradition was better than ever. This is one of my favorite examples of Modesto teamwork to make something special. First and foremost, thanks Middagh Goodwin for the band booking and the city paperwork and the promo. Thank you to my Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group operations team, Nick Crocket, Tyler, and the Sorias, Johnny, Johnny Jr, Ruben, and JD Harbin for building and maintaining this wonderland each year. I am so grateful to Matt Paine, Brian Gini, Kevin and the Collins Electric Crew for the amazing electrical magic. We welcomed a new presenting sponsor, Save Mart to the holiday, joining Beard Land. The fun starts with crafts and surprises at 9 AM, followed by the movie at 10 AM. It’s a fantastic family-friendly event for everyone! Tickets are just $5. The McHenry Museum, one of our local free resources, is open to the public from Friday to Saturday, 12 PM to 4 PM, and offers a wealth of information about the Modesto area. Small Things

Just the other day ago while looking out my kitchen window, I saw something astounding. Truth be told, it is often so, as my wife and I are fortunate enough to live in a relatively quiet neighborhood with old Modesto ash trees lining the streets and front yards are filled with flowering pear, Japanese maple, valley oak, ginko, and a myriad of other trees, plants, and shrubs, many of them now in a fall-season kaleidoscope of vermillion, ruby, cinnabar, and gold. Actually, though, beautiful as this autumn explosion of color is to see, it was something else that astounded me, something quite small. In truth, I’ve come to notice in my life that slow but often surprising changes can come about from very small things. “You never know,” I am sure someone must have told me long ago. In this case, all I did was hang a bird feeder in the maple tree just outside the window. Initially, nothing much happened. Every morning, I would look out the window and see the lonely bird feeder packed with seeds sway a little in the wind, not a bird in sight. Nothing was happening, so of

By Chris Condon course I began to think… Wrong seeds? Too close to the house? Too late in the season? Feeling a little discouraged, I began to doubt the whole endeavor. And of course, when I wasn’t really looking… everything changed. “Wow! Come look at this one!” I called out from the kitchen to my wife as I scrambled about looking for my binoculars. Golden-crowned sparrows were feasting on seeds, swarming the feeder from all sides. A day or so later the goldfinches began showing up, small bright bundles of yellow flame. Soon enough flashes of red and amber appeared, with black wing feathers trimmed in white, marking the coming of the house finches. I still don’t know many of the birds’ names, but I often find myself content to just watch as the colorful acrobats dart, swirl, and flash every which way as if in a dance of joy. “You never know,” as they say.
