It’s time for holiday magic.
Friends and fellow parents, it’s our job to make magic. How do we make magic? It’s taking some of the regular things we do and add a dash of whimsy and a splash of surprise and top it with fun. We can do this to nearly everything and the holidays inspire us to do that. ModestoView has been presenting Rockin’ Holiday now for 12 years. It’s so great for kids to meet Santa and get photos for free. It’s wonderful when kids and adults see it “snow” in 10th St Plaza. The Rockin’ Tree has been a backdrop to many Christmas and Holiday cards and has even witnessed a marriage proposal and some post wedding photos have enjoyed the snow. It’s all part of working together to make life fun for all in our community, and thanks to our sponsors and friends, it’s free for all to enjoy. Thank you all for helping make this happen. Please join us opening night for the tree lighting, music, fun, snow and Santa December 6 after the parade and enjoy skating magic at Modesto On Ice and explore the downtown Winter Wanderland. Being a grandparent has changed our life for the better for so many reasons. First, sharing our traditions, learning new ways to do things and realize all the things we did as

parents are still valuable. It’s all of our jobs to raise our kids, grand kids and great grandkids seeing the possibilities here in Modesto. Take the time to explore, visit our museums, teach about the trees along the trails and make every day interesting. It’s amazing how much you can get done without a phone or tablet in your hands. Becky and I love being Mimi and Murf and we treasure every day and I hope you do too.

seeks to divide and destroy our community bonds. If it’s in the View, it’s the truth and it’s good for our community. Just because a site has the word “news” in it, doesn’t mean it’s true. We support the vetted journalism of the Modesto Bee, the Modesto Focus, Valley Citizen and others that hold their reporters to account, and hope you do too. Social media should be something that lifts us all up and I am grateful for all that support our efforts and hope you follow us @modestoview.
Thank you all for supporting the ModSquad for the Kettle Kick off to benefit the Salvation Army. This helped so many people this holiday season and we are grateful for your support. As we go into time of the year, remember those at are struggling in a variety of ways and plan to share some goodwill, however you can. This is the glue that keeps our community together and strong.

Thanks to you all that have support the non-profit Graffiti USA Museum and thanks for voting it the “Best In Modesto” museum. We are making great progress and the Radio and Music History museum, Murf’s Records and Nichol News are coming to life. Please consider donating to help us “Build the Lobby” to bring the California Welcome Center to Modesto and create a new image for Modesto. www. graffitiusamuseum.com

It’s the 20th Anniversary of the Ill List and we have been sponsors for many years now. Why? This is an important night for free speech, thinking, inspiration, improvisation and opening up our minds. Now, more than ever, this is important. As a people and a community, we need to stay sharp, one top of our game, and look at all the different ways we can accomplish something. That’s why the written and spoken word is key to community dialog, the same way the performing arts and music inspire. Live learning and entertainment is really crucial to a strong and vibrant city. Sure it’s great to listen to a record, but seeing music made in person is special and that’s one of the reasons we focus on the live performing arts and most important of all, it brings people together and creates conversation. ModestoView has a singular mission; to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. One thing you can count on is truth, honesty and a positive. Another thing you can count on is no conspiracies or unfounded information that
I am truly grateful for my family, friends and our company Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. We are a local company that believes in being part of the solution and give back. It’s so great so see those that do and know that everyone does their part. Our team works hard for our customers and being a positive part of Modesto. Our local business are what keeps this print version of ModestoView alive and please take time to visit and support these locals.
Wishing you all a magical and inspirational holiday season the best, from our family to yours.
With gratitude,
Chris Murphy, Publisher / Founder ModestoView CEO, Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group chrism@modestoview.com

Modesto is a generous community. Last month, the community came together to raise $350,000 for the programs of the Salvation Army where the needs of the most vulnerable can be met in a safe environment to give them a chance. You can still assist the Salvation Army as a bell ringer, helping reach more people that are able to give. www. registertoring.com
There are so many families in need, many that feel the shame of not being able to provide any Christmas or Holiday cheer to their families and those without families. Team up with Soroptimist of Modesto and Modesto Sunrise Rotary as they work to match over 2200 children, infants to age 17, with a donor for a gift. Please visit the Giving Tree on the 2nd level of Vintage Faire Mall until December 18.
Everything helps. www.cctmodesto.com/ Scan to Venmo.

Did you know that there is a vending machine that directly helps those in need? You can donate food, clothes, hygiene kits, blankets and services with the press of a button. Located by door near the Apple Store, you can select what you want to give. It’s easy. According to a Modesto Bee story, if you want to buy one of all of the 30 items, it’s called a Jackpot and costs $156

Downtown Modesto’s business district has seen considerable change over the years, brought on by noteworthy fires, extensive demolition, and redevelopment efforts. With the loss of much of Modesto’s early construction and commercial buildings from the early 20th century, the number of existing structures from that era which retain their historic integrity are few and far between. One notable survivor standing tall over the corner of J and 11th Streets is the beautiful Beaty Building, the four-story office building adorned with glazed orchid enamel brick and ivory terracotta trimming. In late 1925, as its construction was nearing completion, the building was praised as the largest and finest office building between Stockton and Fresno, and advertised as “Modesto’s Newest and Most Modern Office Building.” Today, the Beaty Building remains a beloved focal point of the downtown skyline and is worthy of celebration for its preserved historic character and lasting legacy.
Jack Beaty, who had been proprietor and lessee of the Hotel Hughson, announced his plans to construct an office building in April 1925, representing the largest single building project in Modesto at the time. Originally intended to be a three-story building, Beaty instructed the architects, Wieland Brothers of Modesto and Wallace Hubbert of San Francisco, to include an additional fourth floor due to anticipated community interest, achieving 90 offices and 12 storefronts. Construction of the brick and steel frame building was overseen by Leibert and Trobock of San Francisco. By September 1925, most of the 200 tons of steel framework had been erected, with Beaty targeting completion by January 1, 1926.
Amenities included an Otis 12-person elevator, steam heat, gas and electrical connections in every office, plumbed compressed air for dentists, ice water drinking fountains in all hallways, and a mail chute. It was lauded as the only office building in the Central Valley to have an elevator, and it was claimed to be the only

office building in California to be heated by electricity. Offices were finished with hardwood floors and mahogany trim, and the lobby and hallway floors were finished in checkered flint tiles imported from Luxembourg. Notable early tenants included the jeweler Charles Daunt, Victor Drug Co., attorney Thomas B. Scott, and Dr. Fred DeLappe along with several doctors, dentists, lawyers, and other professionals.
Ownership of the Beaty Building changed hands several times in the 1960’s and 1970’s, representing different eras of refurbishment and investment. In 1963, Jack Beaty’s widow Winifred Beaty and son Cecil Beaty sold the office building to Mr. and Mrs. Sucher Shelly of San Francisco. Adlaw Investment Company of San Francisco then purchased the Beaty in 1965, which at the time was still the largest office building in Modesto. Adlaw facilitated the Beaty’s first major remodel and renovation. Between 1965-1966, Adlaw aimed to modernize the building’s storefronts (current locations of Taste Studio, Preservation Coffee & Tea, the Bead Shop and more) and design, retain the facade of the upper three floors, and add a sidewalk canopy. Some storefronts, like the corner Victor Drug Store (current location of Tresetti’s), were remodeled to
have the display window entries removed to expand the interior spaces.
Finally in 1976, the Beaty Building was returned to local ownership when it was purchased by Wendell and Norma Reed of Basic Resources Inc., the Reed Family entity which continues to own the building today. Wendell Reed had seen great potential in the office building amid efforts to revitalize the downtown area, and care was taken at the time to refurbish elements of the building while retaining some original character. Following the purchase, Wendell Reed stated to the Modesto Bee, “With some cosmetics and refurbishing…the Beaty should remain an important downtown asset.” On original details like the lobby and hallway floors, Reed remarked, “The tiles…are just too beautiful to spoil by covering with carpeting. But most everything else will get a new look…” An open house was held by Basic Resources in August 1977 to present “the fresh new look of one of Modesto’s oldest landmarks.”
Throughout its century-long presence at the corner of J and 11th Streets, the landmark Beaty Building has been a go-to destination in Downtown Modesto. The Beaty has remained a hallmark of the Modesto community in no small part for the care taken by past and current owners who appreciated the historic significance of the building while taking steps to ensure its continued capacity to serve future occupants. While the building has seen some changes over the years, targeted renovations to accommodate changing style preferences to attract visitors were balanced with the preservation of the building’s historic ornamentation. Are you interested in becoming a tenant of the Beaty Building and becoming part of its legacy? Join me and others with offices at the Beaty with spaces currently available for rent by contacting Basic Resources Inc. at 209-521-9771.

When I look back on this year of conversations with local musicians, each interview peeled back another layer of what it means to create, endure, and commit to an unpredictable artistic path. This year in Songwriter View was dedicated to uplifting local artists, but what emerged is more than a collection of profiles. Together, these musicians have given us a window into their world, offering perspectives that keep listeners curious and waiting to be inspired by the next song.
Each musician told their own story of passion and discipline. Young artists shared stories of discovering their creative spark, gaining momentum, and learning how to balance school, jobs, and families while finding time to nurture the gift that set everything in motion. It became clear that the creative flame often requires sacrifice to keep burning.
In our conversations, these artists taught me what it looks like to explore different musical outlets and how they challenge themselves to expand in their creative
By Mattéa Noelle

work. Many talked about techniques learned in one space becoming tools they pull out in another, proving that a creative identity isn’t built from staying in one lane, but from exploring many.
We leaned into the realities of burnout, imposter syndrome, and what keeps us going. Everyone shared part of their journey where the pace caught up to them. But every story of slowing down was paired with a story of returning. What brought them back was a deeper understanding of why they started. Every artist has a unique and personal experience with resilience, and yet they diligently shape that vulnerability into profound works of art and music.
Together, we reflected on the meaning of success and the road to recognition: festival stages, awards, and unexpected dream opportunities that punctuate the journey. Accolades are not the motivation to create, but on the rollercoaster of creative highs and lows, they become markers of time, milestones of growth, or quiet anchors that remind us of our best moments. Artists will always be looking for the affirmation that someone, somewhere, has noticed. We all want proof that our message is reaching our audience.
Taken together, these stories portray a roadmap that can inspire us to stay in motion. Evolving passion and identity, setbacks and triumphs, breakthroughs, and a continued commitment to growth.
As winter arrives and the gig calendar quiets, I’m reminded that this rhythm is essential. Explore, expand, express, reflect, and rest. This year taught me that listening is an art of its own, and our community is full of voices, songs, and stories worth hearing. Thank you for reading in 2025!

For dinner and a movie, it’s a perfect location. It’s also mission control for Rockin’ Holidays, Music in the Plaza and May the 4th. Wes and the team always deliver a good line of holiday drinks and treats. One of Modesto’s most famous holiday drinks is the Grinchtini. It’s green with creme de menth, Mozart chocolate cream liqueur with a holiday sugar and white chocolate rim that is delicious. Another fave is the Clausmopolitian with citrus vodka, pomegranate liqueur, Triple Sec and rosemary. One of the most striking is the Jack Frost, with tequila, blue Curacao, coconut cream, lime and sugar rim. If you are making a quick bar visit, try the warm giant pretzel or the Gorgonzola cream roasted steak bites. If you are staying a while, look for a new fall menu with fish of the day and new cambazola mushroom cream sauce filet and a new fall chicken. The Christmas Tree will be one of your holiday faves. Cream de banana and vanilla with coconut liqueur and simple syrup are all shaken into a frothy treat with coconut rum and a mint garnish. Tresetti’s is more magical during the holidays - an especially perfect spot to watch the Celebration of Lights Parade on December 6th or for an “après” cocktail after Rockin’ Holiday or Modesto on Ice. The holiday cocktail menu is live and the ViewCrew recommends the Holiday Spice (gin, amaro, white creme de cocoa, egg white) and the S’moretini (vodka, bourbon cream, amaretto, and cream) for a delicious holiday boozy treat. Pair it with the year-round burrata cheese and fruit plate (or the roasted garlic and brie!) and you’ve got the perfect evening in one of the coziest, hall of fame bars in town. Enjoy! Cheers! Lofi Labs takes crafting cocktails to a new level with a beautiful bar, lounge and attached restaurant. Lauren Jamieson and Heather some holiday treats, one that has a smokey warmth cordial, to match the elegant wood bar and vintage back bar. We start with the warming “Sable”. Starting off with a Don Fularin maple syrup and a coffee liqueur in a crystal bitters, then stirred. Finished with an orange zest wrap yourself in this warmth. For a cordial, you flavor with a house made cranberry cordial mix, pear vodka, fresh pear and bitters. An orange peel zest is fired over the drink, If you want one of the most luscious bar bites the Butternut squash raviolis, cooked in brown butter with pine nuts. Amazing. At Secret Garden you can treat yourself to breakfast, lunch, milkshakes, dinner, cocktails, mocktails, all day long! This is the best spot for fun cocktails in an elevated “best hits” diner - perfect for kids and families. With hall of fame breakfasts (See: California Benedict, Kid’s Chicken and Waffles, Chilaquiles), mimosa flights, hearty dinners (See: spaghetti and meatballs!), full cocktail menu, and real espresso creations - you can get it all. The staff is friendly and service is quick! The holiday menu is so fun and the View Crew recommends the Mrs. Claus Margarita (cranberry, tequila, Cointreau, rosemary) or the (no-booze) Peppermint Marshmallow Latté. This holiday season the ViewCrew was excited to talk with Jessica Flores, Cultural Services Program Manager for the City of Modesto, to learn more about the legacy of the McHenry Mansion, McHenry Museum, and new programs and events highlighting our city’s history for future generations. From historical holiday décor to unique programs for Modesto’s youth to engaging cultural events that expand reach across our region – let’s learn more about Jessica and our Modesto icons like the Mansion and Museum!
ModestoView: What is the overarching mission of the Cultural Services Program Manager role, and how does this position interact with Modesto icons like the McHenry Mansion and Museum?
Jessica Flores: As the Cultural Services Program Manager for the City of Modesto, I oversee all operations at the McHenry Museum and McHenry Mansion. The City owns and operates both facilities through the Historical Properties Division housed under the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department. We are a very small team of three running daily operations – myself, Event Coordinator, Laura Mesa, and Historical Properties Intern and NAGPRA Coordinator, Levi Johannsen. We also have two part time staff that support

with programs and events. Our team is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and culture of Stanislaus County through programs, events, exhibitions, and other opportunities designed to inspire and engage our community.
MV: How does your team decide which historical resources or local stories to highlight for the public in the Mansion and Museum’s programming?
JF: First and foremost, the Museum and Mansion are community spaces. We want everyone to feel a personal connection to at least one artifact on display or have a fond memory of attending an event, so I ask the community what they want to see highlighted and then build around the
responses. It may seem like a simple answer, but historically, the museum industry has operated around the model of “we’ll tell you what you want to see.” The shift in the industry toward a participatory approach, asking people what they want and then working together to curate exhibits and events, empowers communities to actively contribute to local historical and cultural narratives. I started with the City in January 2024, and by implementing this approach, we’ve already seen an increase in community participation at both the Mansion and Museum.
MV: What recent projects or exhibits at the Mansion and Museum are you most proud of, and why?
JF: The part of my job that I’m most passionate about is community-based archiving and storytelling, and finding ways to open up the Museum to the community and invite them to tell their stories through exhibits and programs. Everyone that’s ever lived here has contributed in some way to our local history, and we can’t tell the complete story without as many people as possible contributing to it. So, I’m most proud of two things: my first exhibit here, The Legacy of Lowriding, which was curated in partnership with many members of the Lowrider community, and our most recent event, Between Two Worlds: Día de
los Muertos Celebration, where community members created ofrendas to honor their loved ones.
MV: History is often a tough sell to the younger generations - especially in the age of social media and the internet. How do you ensure that events appeal to a wide range of ages and interests?
JF: This is something I think about constantly. How do we stay relevant and connected and how do we ensure all members of the community see value in historical and cultural preservation? To do this, I work with two groups of people in mind: those who are here today and those who will be here tomorrow. Most of our programs and events are designed for all ages. Whether it’s a young family looking to build lasting memories or older adults looking to stay active and engaged with the community, our facilities are spaces for lifelong learning.
But what about tweens, teens and young adults? Well, this is a critical audience for us, because they are the next generation of museum supporters and employees. They’re at a point where they can still develop deep personal connections to local history and also consider it as a professional path for their future. We started our

Junior Docent program in July for exactly this reason. Participants range from middle school to college age and receive training at both the Mansion and Museum. They help with events, can give tours at the Mansion, and are about to begin training at the Museum on exhibition design, archive work, object handling and preservation. MV: The Mansion and Museum are institutions shaped by many influential founders and leaders in the past 50+ years, how is that learned knowledge passed down to ensure longevity and continuity in its operations?
JF: Over the past five decades, both the McHenry Mansion and McHenry Museum have been shaped by dedicated City staff, volunteers, and community partners whose work preserved not only the physical structures, but also the stories, collections, and traditions that define them. Like every field, the museum world has experienced significant shifts in how we interpret history, engage audiences, and operate public institutions. Ensuring longevity requires that we honor what has been built while continuing to evolve alongside our community. The knowledge passed down from our founders and longtime stewards provides the framework for this balance. Their commitment to preservation, public access, and community service established the core principles we still rely on today. By studying their work—how they cared for collections, welcomed visitors, and cham-

pioned local heritage—we gain the foundation we need to adapt our practices for the present. That historical understanding guides us as we introduce new programs, expand inclusivity, and embrace innovative ways to share Modesto’s story. I believe those early leaders worked hard to create spaces where our shared local history could be celebrated by all. They would be proud to know that we are continuing that legacy, preserving the spirit of their work even as we explore new approaches. We may change how we do things, but the values they established—preservation, education, and community connection—remain at the heart of everything we do.
MV: What upcoming events are you most excited about for the holiday season and into the New Year?
JF: October through December is basically our Superbowl Season at the Mansion and Museum. We’re heading into our final events of the year and they’re all exciting. On November 29th from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, we’re kicking off the season with our first Historical Properties Winter Festival. Taking place at the Mansion, Museum, and McClatchy Park. We’ll have activities, tours, carriage rides, and more. On December 6th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM we’re hosting our second Holidays Around the World program at the Museum. People of all ages are invited to learn about winter holidays celebrated around the world while participating in activities and making crafts. Our final event of the year is Candlelight Tours at the McHenry Mansion on December 20th and 21st from 5:30-7:30

PM. These special holiday tours lead guests through the beautifully decorated McHenry Mansion. With the magic of storytelling, costumed actors, music, and interactive elements, visitors are transported back in time for an evening to remember! Tickets will be available for sale beginning Monday, November 24th online at McHenryMansion.org or in person at the McHenry Mansion Visitor Center located at 924 15th Street.
• McHenry Museum Holidays Around the World – December 6th 10:00 AM –12:00 PM
• McHenry Mansion Candlelight Tours –December 20th and 21st 5:30 – 7:30 PM (Tickets required, $10 adults, $5 children 10 and under)
MV: If you had an unlimited budget, what special project or program would you like to consider?
JF: I would bring The Janet Lancaster History Center to fruition. Janet served as McHenry Museum’s volunteer archivist for many years, helping countless individuals with historical research. She was an incredible woman with an unmatched knowledge of local history, and her loss has had a profound impact on the community. We’re hoping to honor Janet’s passion for local history as we work toward establishing The Janet Lancaster History Center. The Center will be home to the Museum’s archive, a public research and classroom space, and a private staff workspace to allow for the proper preservation of our collection. An unlimited budget would mean we could make this plan a reality in the immediate future and provide access to historical documents, photographs, texts, and more to our community members. So far, about $14,000 has been raised for the project through generous community contributions.
MV: Lastly, Beatles or Stones?
JF: Beatles. Mom’s influence.

The Christmas and Holiday season is magic. As parents, it’s our job to create magical experiences for our kids and families. As a community, it’s our responsibility to inspire and create magic for our the places where we live. The frosting, the glitter, the snow, the lights, the songs, the sounds and the smell of the holidays is wonderful. And we do need a lot of magic right now, so let’s check it out.
Yes, that’s our plan Modesto. Rockin’ Holiday is back for 2025 with more lights and more snow. We have a great line up of music and the Rockin’ Tree is will perform nightly. Rockin’ Santa and the Rockin’ Elves will be at the Rockin’ North Pole, Thurs, Fri and Sat, Dec 6, 11, 12,13, 18, 19, 20 and Sun the 21st @rockinholiday

Stroll the Winter WANDERland this season. Our friends at the Downtown Modesto Parnership and the Modesto DID have been working with the downtown merchants for fun window decorations. This makes it fun to stroll and enjoy dinner, movies cocktails, live performances and even ice skating, all downtown.
The Nutcracker is Christmas magic for so many in our community. For decades, young kids have learned to dance at Juline’s School Dance and the Central West Ballet has grown and created larger than life ballet shows. This is a big part of Modesto culture and is holiday magic.
The Central West Ballet Nutcracker gets better each year with more sparking sets and great designs as Clara makes her sugar plum journey. The acting and dancing is first class and the show is designed for a youthful attention span. There are multiple casts so that more kids can be included. The role the Fairy Godmother will be Amy Wolfe. I was honored to be Mother Ginger a few years back and it’s something I will always remember. The lobby of the Gallo Center is stunning during the Nutcracker and is a great place for family photos. There are new surprises with the CWB’s Nutcracker Season as Ann Endsley is establishing a Nutcracker Brunch and Nutcracker Market throughout the Gallo Center Lobby (and more) for one day only on Saturday Dec. 20.

Uchizono, featured on our cover, is a senior soloist with Central West Ballet. She is performing the lead role of the Sugar Plum Fairy among other many lead roles in The Nutcracker. Other Sugarplums include: Noelle Im, Caroline Young and Izabella Duran-Soriano. The Cavaliers are Grant Landon & Kevin Singleton
The role of Clara is performed by Gia Combs, Anastasia Leon-York and Solace Kerr-Owens.

By Paula Treick DeBoard,
This November, an intrepid group of writers met every Monday night at Bookish to work on creative projects – novel outlines, chapters, short stories, memoirs, and more. And on December 1, we’re meeting to deliver a “pitch” – to “sell” our projects. Modeled on the idea of an elevator pitch, the idea is to hone our creative ideas and be able to describe them in a concise, accurate and interesting way. Think: Here’s why you need to fund/share/read my book right now. However, you may be finding this article well after Pitch Night. Not to worry! We’re taking the rest of December off from our weekly meet-ups for general life craziness, but writing nights will resume on Mondays in January.
There are other writing opportunities this December for all levels.
Do you have a poem or song to share?
Bookish open mic, hosted by Julia Washington, is an “introvert-friendly” stage for your written and musical talents. Bring your friends; come see what local talent is brewing! The show starts on Saturday, December 6 at 6:30pm, and tickets are available at www.bookishmodesto.com/ events .
And speaking of poetry: Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center will host its annual potluck and open mic reading at Dragonfly Art For Life (1210 J Street) on Wednes-

day, December 10 from 6-7:30pm. This is an event for members; but it’s not too late to join, and you can even do so at the door. Annual membership is $25, which is tax deductible, and helps ensure that poetry readings and workshops continue throughout the area. The monthly Second Tuesday Poetry series resumes in 2026!
Also on December 10, check out Queen Bean’s poetry night and haiku battle from 7:30-9:30pm. Poets can select their musical accompaniment; the audience shows their appreciation for the best haikus with, what else, kazoos. Follow the Queen Bean’s social media for tickets and more info!

We are a Disney family and Mary Poppins is a big part of our family story. Light 100 candles on December 13 for Dick Van Dyke. His Bert was the key to the movie and everything he has done has been a wonderful memory and is key to the Mary Poppins in our lives. Thanks Dick Van Dyke

A Modesto City Schools old school rivalry that dates back to the 1960’s, I believe, the two junior high schools still compete for the “ The Big Stick” & the Teddy Bears, “ Little Bear” & “ Big Bear”.
According to LaLoma insiders, “The big stick started with the cheerleaders. They (La Loma Cheerleaders) found this old two by four out past the oak tree on the field and cleaned it up. They painted it green and put some sparkles on it. This must have ben the late 70’s or early 80’s. “They brought it to the game that year and La Loma won so we kept it.” “The cheerleaders passed it back and forth the first few years. Eventually some-

By Coach Colin McBride
one decided to make it an thing for football and the athletes started passing it back and forth. It bounced back and forth probably the first five or six years.” “At first it weas football only, and then someone decided to include basketball. It had a lot more meaning when it was only for football and if you won it, you had the pride of keeping it on campus for a full year.”
The Big Bear was carved at Roosevelt during assembly many years ago. Then La Loma got the Little Bear and the rivalry was on! The Teddy Bears are on the line from girls’ volleyball to girls’ basketball now. This rivalry alone has had so many great traditions with the teachers and the coaches. From, Jim Allen, Alfred Habina, Diane Garmon, Ken Gomes, Eric Wagner & his wife Becky and his brother Brett Wagner, Steve Blickenstaff, Andrea Hughes, Eric Richter and so many more great names. I myself have also been part of this great tradition as the new coach at Roosevelt girls’ basketball program. Right now, the Roosevelt holds the “ Big Stick” & La Loma currently holds the “ Big Bear” & “ Little Bear”. Both are on the line on December 11th @ La Loma junior high school in the flag football & girls basketball games, 7th grade starts @3: 45pm & 8th grade games start @ 4:30pm.

Modesto is often dismissed as one of the “least literate” cities in America, but anyone who has sat in a room where slam poets step to the mic and crack open the sky like lightning with their words knows how wrong that story is. This community speaks truth to power. This community writes their heart out. This community shows up for the brave act of turning lived experience into spoken word. Poetry doesn’t just entertain; it transforms. It gives people permission to feel, to challenge, to heal, to imagine, and to inspire.
And this December, Modesto is overflowing with chances to experience the power of poetry.
The month kicks off on December 10 with the Modesto Artists Movement’s epic Poetry Night & Haiku Battle at Queen Bean, 7:30-9:30pm—a high-energy, wildly creative evening of open mic poetry and haiku battles that will make you clutch your pearls. $100 awarded to winners!

By Sam Pierstorff

This is community art in its purest form: playful, raw, edgy, and full of life.
On December 12, acclaimed slam poet Joaquín Zihuatanejo comes to us all the way from Texas to lead a free hybrid-erasure workshop, guiding writers through bold, unusual generative practices that help unlock new voices and new ways of thinking.
Then, on December 13, the legendary ILL LIST Poetry Slam storms the State Theatre for its monumental 20th anniversary, bringing back spoken word champions from the past two decades for an electrifying, world-class showdown. This is a momentous and historic slam that will rewrite the way you experience poetry. Together, these events rewrite the narrative. Modesto isn’t a city lacking literacy. It’s a city overflowing with language, love, and life.
Poetry lives here. And this December, it’s going to be louder than ever

On December 11th, the museum will host its annual Donor Holiday Party to honor the remarkable supporters building Graffiti USA for generations to enjoy.
As the year draws to a close, the museum’s leadership celebrates an extraordinary community of donors and volunteers. “Our donors and volunteers are the high-octane fuel that keeps our engines running,” said Executive Director Cecil Russell. These generous supporters ensure our mission to preserve our community history cruises forward at full throttle.
As the holiday season approaches, Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum invites all supporters to celebrate the journey, toast to the road ahead, and appreciate what passionate community support achieves. Want to enjoy a fun-filled evening where gratitude meets gasoline? Call the Museum to RSVP today!
The Museum’s road to completion runs through community support. Whether you’re a longtime car enthusiast, a local business owner, or simply someone who believes in preserving history and building community spaces, your contribution will make a tangible difference. This is the moment to put pedal to the metal and help build something extraordinary. Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum has the vision, the passion, and the plan—now it needs the community to fuel the journey forward.
Together, we can build a lobby that’s not just an entrance, but a destination. A space that honors the past while accelerating toward an exciting future. A place where the community can gather daily to explore and celebrate the cruising history that defines our culture. This isn’t just a renovation. The new lobby will feature a California Welcome Center connecting visitors to regional tourism, an expanded gift store, modern restroom facilities, and, best of all, it will be open seven days a week as a true community destination.
The finish line is in sight. Let’s cross it together. Every donation fuels this vision and leaves a lasting legacy for future generations

Thinking back to childhood, I can recall one day lying on my back in the front yard’s soft grass and watching as, high overhead, the clouds morphed and transformed themselves like magic. They would first appear as soaring castles, then become mountains of snow tumbling softly down into distant valleys, then disappear into nothingness. Best of all, I could float along with them, as if on a sailboat, feeling joyful and playful all at the same time – in a word, wondrous.
Much later in my life, when employed as a full-time teacher, I often found myself seeking ways to somehow bring that sense of wonder into my classroom. Kids need motivation to learn, and what better way to entice them than to experience a sense of wonder? But how could I capture those wondrous clouds in a jar, so to say, to share with them?
Now school textbooks, which appropriately emphasize the mastery of core skills, don’t generally identify “wonder” as a lesson objective. However, on occasion, I would run across activities that mentioned educating the “whole” child, often showing an illustration of a head filled with swirling colors and dazzling pictures. Such activities would recognize that, as children learn, they certainly do accumulate facts, but they also dream of where their lives are going

(even if only out to recess), what they feeling, and how they are sensing these imaginary worlds in their minds. These experiences are integral to the learning process, too.
Indeed, it’s important to consider: Why do any of us learn?
Whether we are a child, an adult, or a retiree – when we are using our minds to think and reason, we are actually doing so while afloat in a world of feelings, daydreams, and aspirations. In fact, this is exactly how our brains are structured – its neo-cortex of logical rationality rests atop its deeper layers of memories, emotions, sensations. Learners don’t acquire knowledge on a foundation of cement; rather, they float on dreams though seas of memory, emotion, and aspiration. As we learn, we aspire, reaching for something higher in the sky.
All of us are sailing through clouds of dream

On to the holidaze, folks: stay home and cool the goose with family and friends, and on to Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
The Blue Monday party continues at Café Urbano on the fourth Monday of every month, Christmas Blue Monday jam, Monday, December 22nd, with some Christmas gems and special guests. In the merry elf band, we got John Adey Bass, Cortez Flores Drums, John Burt on Sax, and your host, Eric Benson, on keys. drums, and Andrew Rosenblum's Sax and Johnny Valdez's guitar. The band plays R&B, Funk, and Motown for listening and dancing with a great 6-piece Band. Also catch The Imaginary Trio playing jazz, funk, rock & pop at Chinn's International on the 5th from 6-9 pm.
If you have not checked out the jazz nights at the Intermission, do yourself a favor: you can not beat this intimate venue when live jazz is in the air. On December 11th, guitarist Colt Coleman will be performing, and on the 19th, Denise Choate Rythm and Blues Project will be in the house from 7-9 pm.
We all need to support the venues that support the arts and create new ones, as many great bands need to get out and be heard. Together, we can make it happen and see things thrive! Please support music in the downtown, we can’t do it without you folks!
Some great shows at Gallo Center, but also check some great venues out of town: The Newman Theatre, Yoshi’s Oakland, best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center, Santa Cruz, and Piedmont Piano company, the Back Door, and the Sound Room, located in Oakland.
