I believe in the spirit of giving, friendship and fellowship for the Holidays sprinkled with a bit of magic, and I confess, I never stopped believing in Santa Claus and Clark W Griswold. This probably explains a lot about me and why we wanted to decorate downtown Modesto along with our own house. Staple gun and all.  Growing up, I remember the glittering garland and bells in downtown Modesto and other places we visited. We want to spread the holiday cheer as much as possible and invite everyone to enjoy a Classic Downtown Modesto and experience Rockin’ Holiday and all that downtown has to offer.  It is just part of the magic that the holiday season brings, the desire to make things special, capture the times in our past that mean something and create new experiences and memories for others. It doesn’t take a lot of decoration to spark inspiration and bring that feeling of celebration.  That feeling when you turn the corner, see the lights lit up, or wake up in the morning and find the ground snow covered or when the day after Thanksgiving, you feel the seasons change.  I remember when Becky and I were living in Seattle and the snowstorm kept our family from making it.  Becky, her mom Vivian and I went to have Thanksgiving at a downtown restaurant; it was dark and snowy.  When we came out, the Christmas decorations in downtown Seattle where all lit up and we were the only ones crazy to be out on the road. It was magical.    One of Modesto’s magical places is the State Theatre. As the State turns 85, it has

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

a special meaning as I was a past president of the State and am proud to be a part of this history and I celebrate all that it has become and it’s role in our community for the future. I hope you check it out this month and enjoy our interview with Kirstie Boyett and enjoy a classic film this month. This has been an amazing year that has been filled with magic moments and milestones. We are so fortunate to have our kids living here in Modesto.  We had an engagement and are now in wedding planning mode.  We have welcomed in a new extended family from Chico.  Abigail has joined our family warehousing business and there is still so much to be done.  It was so special to celebrate 20 years of the MAMA Awards, and it was great to look back on many special moments over the years, but this year’s event created it’s own special moment with the amazing performance by the Women of MAMA doing a tribute to Woodstock 50 years.  MoBand celebrated 100 years and this is such an important part of Modesto’s character and I am so proud to be a part of this institution and serve as the President of the Board. I have walked a mile in her shoes, our band Third Party rocked BunnyCon, Music in the Plaza, National Night Out, Porchfest, Night at the Bowl, Graffiti Walk of Fame and even Halloween.  We celebrated May the 4th, I MC’d the 4th of July Parade, raised money for a new LaLoma playground, Power of the Purse and for the Heart Association. It was

such and honor to be named Citizen of the Year by the American GI Forum. This was a true highlight and I am so grateful to have a family that supports my civic involvement.  None of this works without them.  The amazing thing is, that we have so many people in our community that do as much or more to make a difference and we are so lucky for that.  This is what truly makes Modesto great is the number of people that will give of themselves, their time, their money, their energy and creativity to move things forward and I am so glad to have so many of them as my friends and colleagues.  You read through this magazine, and you see the people and businesses that make our city shine. As we close out this year and look forward, I am so grateful for my original family unit. We are strong and supportive of each other. We lift each other up and helped each other make good choices, grow and learn, find wonderful partners and encourage each other to grow and become better people and this is the foundation of our holiday spirit and the friendships we can all share.  Becky, Madison, Abigail, Ryan and Harrison, I love you all so much.  I and my family wish all of you the Happiest of Holidays, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah and wish Peace and Friendship to all, as this is the foundation of everything.  You are all part of our ModestoView family and we will keep working hard to be a positive force in our community and continue to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. Best to you all and hope you still hear the bells, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView

GIVING VIEW

Giving for the Holiday

There is always time and there is always something extra we can do for those in need. It really doesn’t matter how or why, but we need to give when we can and this season when it is cold and people are hungry, we can do just a bit more.  Here are some ways you can help out.

Ring the Bell

The Salvation Army needs you. What I like

about the Salvation Army is that over 85% of all funds donated go directly to programs that help people directly. This is a really high percentage and you know your donations are being cared for.  If you have even two hours to spare, you can ring the bell to collect donations at a place that works for you, your family and friends if you want to do it as a group.  Sign up here at www.registertoring.com   The Giving Tree has made such a big difference in so many lives.   This year the Modesto Soroptimists and Modesto Sunrise Roatary are teaming up to make this better than ever.  Located on the 2nd floor of Vintage Faire, right above Santa’s Workshop, you can stop by the tree, pick the tag of a family or person that is in need and you can sponsor that gift.  They will take care of the rest, getting it wrapped and delivered to those who signed up.  You can also volunteer to work this project if you are able to.  Stop by and sponsor a gift from noon-8 pm daily until December 18th

12/07 KAT Country Cares featuring Dylan Scott at Greens on Tenth 12/08 Santa vs. Grinch Toy for Tots Fun Day Toy Drive at Extreme Paintball Park 12/13 4th Annual TrailerHead Toy Drive at The Other Place 12/14 Stuff the Bus Wal*Mart, Manteca 12/14 Canned food drive – Spirit of Giving Run – 10th St Plaza 1221 8th Annual Do Something Toy Drive at the Running Iron The Salvation Army Berberian Center needs Personal care items https://modestocitadel.salvationarmy. org/modesto_citadel_corps/ You can help the Modesto Gospel Mission here: https://modestogospelmission.org/donate Coats and jackets to Interfaith Ministry – 120 Kerr Ave. Modesto

By Jim Christiansen Think local in your Holiday shopping

plans, and visit the Arts Blocks downtown. Helps support local venues and local artists on display with art for sale.  Keep in mind that Art Walk this month is December 19th for last minute art shopping.  Consider more leisurely visits to venues like Dragonfly Art for Life, Tri-Chromatic Gallery, Caroline Huff Photography Gallery, Chartreuse Muse and gift shop area at the Mistlin Gallery. During regular business hours, look at art at DEVA, next door Crow Trading, Intrinsic Elements, and upstairs gallery of Nicole Slater. There is a lot of art to see and purchase in downtown Modesto. Need to get a Holiday card off and want to make it personal?  Mistlin Gallery offers a Screen Print Holiday Cards workshop December 6.  Want an educational gift for the kids? Consider Central California Art Association’s Winter Sculpture Camp for Kids January 6.  Need a December activity involving Superheroes? Carnegie Arts presents a showing of Superheroes – A NeverEnding Battle December 8 at 2 pm.  The Documentary film covers 75 years of the genre, with more that fifty interviews with artists, publishers and exciting graphics.  Nostalgic for television art instructor icons of winter scenes and happy little bushes?  Tri-Chromatic Gallery hosting a Bob Ross Paint Night December 26.  Just the ticket to try out those Christmas gift art supplies and review the classics.  Chella presents her annual show, “In the Pursuit of Light” at Trewin Farmery in the Shelton Flooring building out on Pentecost Avenue, off Kiernan.  A selection of Chella’s plein-air paintings will be on display from December 6 to January 6, with a public artists reception December 10, 5 to 9 pm.  Home for the Holidays is the annual theme for the last Central California Art Association members show at Mistlin Gallery.  I have 5 of my coffee cat original watercolors in the show, but many styles, price points in this show, and all for sale in the holiday season.  And when I’m shopping art, I check out the gift shop jewelry and small art in the back of the gallery, same as I do at the main counters at Chartreuse Muse.  All by local artists.  In case you think you’ve had trouble finding Mistlin Gallery, look for the new banner at 1015 Tenth street, installed for the gallery by artist Phil Murillo. I am finishing up the carport-art studio conversion at my house and made enough progress to begin organizing and using it before Christmas.  And I need to, as I entered the 2020 Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour, April 25 and 26, so I must FOLLOW US:

BREW VIEW

Chanukah 2019!

Simmer Down at the Grand Cru by Christopher Mitchell and Brandilyn Brown We try to stay on the up-and-up on hot

new liquor creations for you, and we have accidentally stumbled across the valley’s hottest new concoction while browsing Facebook the other day. We love it when new libations fall into our radar! The Grand Cru in Turlock has been one of our favoriteTurlock watering holes since discovering them on the “Devil’s Elbow Scavenger Hunt” in 2018. It’s the site of the old Vintage Lounge and Piano Bar, which converted to Grand Cru in August 2017 after The Udder Place owners Jerry Powell and Shayne Heine purchased it to turn it into a wine-centric bar that is both approachable for the common sipper and comfortable for the connoisseur. And they succeeded in both. Lodi isn’t the only city with posh bars! And while they busted into the scene with a great wine selection, we can’t downplay their cocktails on wine’s account: they are boldly branching out into CBD Cocktails, using CBD Floaters, a company which tailor mixes cocktail inspired drops to put into your favorite adult beverage to bring your weekend or nightcap an extra dose of zen.

Given the nature of our day jobs, we didn’t try the loaded versions of these cocktails ourselves but brought along a trusted, knowledgeable advisor who happily informed us you can’t taste the CBD drops, only the delectable flavors which enhance the already delicious drink. These drinks will not get you high, but rather give you a double dose of relaxation, so fear not fellow lushes-if this seems up your alley and your employer allows you to partake, we highly suggest one of these blends for your consumption! ~Mary Jane Margarita with Cherry Lime Rickey Floaters and black cherry and lime garnish ~Orange Kush Mojito with Orange Kush Floaters garnished with mint leaves ~High Mule with Lemon Ginger Floaters with lemon mint garnish ~Peach Tree Martini with Cosmopolitan Floaters and orange peel garnish Our favorite? The Peach Tree, followed by Orange Kush. Swing in to try them all and tell us your favorite, tag #modestoview on Instagram. Sip on, friends!

CHEF VIEW ffffffffffff Tye Bauer and the New Bauer’s Downtown Gastropub By Chris Murphy Photos by MJ Mangano

It is all about the taste, and it is all about the care that goes

into the unique foods that are served up as specialties. Tye Bauer has been a champion of hand-made flavors, competed on network TV cooking shows and delivered fantastic tastes on the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives show. But make no mistake, every journey to his restaurants is a culinary tour that you will not soon forget.  Every serving is special and you know it is prepped with care.   We are experiencing an amazing journey that is leading to a new Bauer’s Downtown Gastropub.    Raised in the bay area, Tye was the youngest of 7 kids.  He explains “it was tougher when he was younger, but as the house cleared out, I had to fight less and I had less anxiety”. He was often described as “resilient” and that probably was a driving force for his energy, drive and quest to deliver innovative and creative food.  He, his wife Niccol and his kids live in the LaLoma Neighborhood and regularly support community events and he is generous with his really limited extra time.   The original Bauer’s 66 1/2, made famous by the DD&D show, occupies a small space in McHenry Village on the Briggsmore side, behind Viera’s, featuring amazing sandwiches, burgers, meats and vegan options and tasty sides for over 10 years with Chef Tim Mercer.  Bauhaus at the north edge of downtown on Downey is like finding a gem in each tapas plate.  Each item is hand crafted with curated meats, vegan options, hand picked local ingredients with a story and a reason for each item on the menu.   It is really a neighborhood hangout, many people cycling or walking to eat in the cozy space enjoying essentially custom made food.     Now, we find ourselves on 9th Street, the Old Highway 99.  Originally called Front Street as it faced the Southern Pacific tracks. It was essentially the old “Skid Row” and that suits

Tye Bauer just fine. “I like being on the edge in interesting places others may not want to go”.  Tye and his team have completely renovated the building, formerly the Burnt End, Banana Joe’s and the Palm Gardens among other things.  Butcher block tables, fresh new kitchen, monster 3 HP meat grinder, brick walls, seating for 60 with art by John Troxler @troxstar bringing it all together.  Being by the train was really great and they have even embraced this location with a giant train mural and incorporated it into their logo.   Even more exciting is the new menu Chef Tim Mercer and Tye have prepared. One of the first things that got our attention is they are featuring sliced potatoes vs. the traditional fries. When you walk in the door, the first thing you will see is a meat aging and drying case that will supply specialty cured meats for all of the Bauer eateries.  Super exciting will be the Duck Sandwich and the aged Rib Eye and the New York Strip steaks. Of course, he will continue to build on his already fantastic pastrami, his sausages and delicious fish presentations. Finally, diners will be amazed with the beautiful presentation of each dish and the care for the entire process.  Tye is genuinely excited how this new larger space will be able to support his other smaller places.  Over the last few months, Tye has been on a “food as fuel” program, all clean, no booze and 100% focus as he and his team built the GastroPub at the same time running the other locations AND building his wife Niccol’s new Dharma Yoga Studio open now at 601 Scenic that will have the fitness programs along with a Vegan Raw food bar in 2020.  Pretty amazing. Follow on IG @dharmayogamodesto  Local Modesto icon, Tony Serrano is on the important front line of Bauer’s projects, manning the kitchen at Bauhaus, telling stories, engaging the diners and will even soon bring his legendary coffee skills soon to Bauer’s Downtown.   Bauer’s Downtown Gastropub will be open Tuesday – Saturday  from 11-3 pm and will start dinner hours in January.  Beer and wine are available with a full bar coming in 2021.

What is next in the Bauer experience? There’s more in store, but we will leave that for another time. The only hint we will give you is “3”... Stay tuned.

It all started in Key Largo. Taking advantage of the end of daylight

savings time, I woke up in a bungalow on the beach in Key Largo. The night before, I had discovered the Caribbean Club in Key Largo, where I learned that this was the original bar, featured in the classic Key Largo movie. Also in Key Largo is the original African Queen boat so it was a big Humphrey Bogart experience. Fast forward to the bar at Ralson’s Goat, home of my favorite local Irish Coffee.  Master distiller and my friend Lee Palleschi presents his Bogart Irish Whiskey.  Finished locally in Jackson in Bourbon barrels from an authentic imported whiskey, this Bogart Irish Whiskey as an amazing flavor with a sweet finish and takes an Irish

INTER VIEW By Chris Murphy

Opened on Christmas Day in 1934, the fabulous historic State Theatre is the last of the grande dame movie theatres in Modesto. Modesto was an early supporter of the arts and movies, and back in the early part of the century, 10th Street was home to many theatres, both for stage and screen.   Toward the mid-century, we were the Strand, the Covell and The State were the home of the premier movies.  Sadly, we lost the “fireproof ” Strand to fire in the 80s, and The Covell met the wrecking ball in 1998 to make way for 10th Street Place.  Today the State Theatre stands, resplendent in a huge overhaul and continues with a vibrant movie and live performance calendar with a bright neon and digital marquee that lights up J Street.   I have a particular love for this Theatre as a former Board President when we were trying to restore, rebuild and upgrade the theatre in the early 2000s.   We made a lot of headway and set the stage for the Mike Zagaris lead push to go for a complete renovation to the beautiful place it is today. This month, the State Celebrates the opening of “The Jewel” the new small-scale theatre tucked into a new space, adjacent to the main auditorium.  There is excitement to come as the State Celebrates 85 years.  The State has also been home to the Modesto Area Music Awards since 2001 to celebrate excellence in our music community and there are regular annual events like the Ill List, happening on December 14 that regularly sell out.  A diverse, active and vibrant Board of Directors is in place and there is dynamic leadership from Executive Director Kirstie Boyett.  Let’s catch up with Kirstie and learn about the exciting things happening at The State. ModestoView:  What is so special about the non-profit State Theatre? Kirstie Boyett: The State Theatre enriches our community by offering exceptional cultural, educational, film and performancebased experiences. MV: Why did you want to take on this position and how do you think you can help move the State Theatre forward? KB: I joined the State Theatre Board of Directors in 2005 during the last major renovation. I was twice elected board president so I fully understood the mission

14

Kirstie Boyett

MV: What are some of the regular challenges you have operating a historic theatre? KB: Our challenges are not unlike other artistic and cultural organizations in town.  We strive to bring relevant films and entertainment options that our community desires, and that’s not an easy task.  That said, our patrons rate us highly in terms of programming, customer service, concessions, and overall experience.  MV: What is the future for Modesto’s State Theatre? KB:  Our strategic plan calls for The State Theatre to be “...the soul of the cultural renaissance of downtown Modesto.”  We will do this by offering a wide range of films, performances and educational programs that promote community access and enable all residents of the region to participate in arts programs of excellence. MV: Describe one of your favorite State Theatre moments? KB: That’s easy.  The time I saw kids pile off a bus for one of our Youth Education Programming events...when they walked into the lobby with wide eyes full of amazement.  Many of them had never been to The State nor seen a movie venue of this grandeur.  Priceless.

and operations of the organization. When asked to move into the Executive Director’s role, I grew excited by the opportunity to take this wonderful theater that I love to the next level. I believe that I can continue to make The State a more relevant component of the arts & entertainment scene in Modesto. MV: The State is unique in that you can host both films and live performances; how have you seen the blend of these offerings benefitting the State and the community. KB:  It’s not unusual for us to host our Youth Education Programming in the morning, a film that afternoon, and a rock concert that night!  We can bring the best of all worlds.  We are committed to being a theatre for the entire community...inclusive in every respect.  The State Theatre is a place where differing ideas are welcomed and discussion encouraged. MV: The State has recently had some important upgrades, tell us about those. KB:  Our Board of Directors is incredible.  They are fully committed to ensuring that this facility represents the best and latest in music, sound, and light while maintaining the beauty of this historic treasure.  The

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

Jewel, our new micro-theatre represents a fusion of these values. This 25-seat venue will provide an intimate setting for enjoying great cinema, business meetings, private parties or even your next fantasy team draft. MV: You are opening the new smaller Jewel Theatre this month, what was the inspiration for this? KB: The State Theatre first opened its doors on Christmas, 1934.  The dedication of The Jewel and its first film will be held this Christmas Eve.  We like to think of it as our Christmas gift to the citizens of Modesto! Having the Jewel as a second screen, allows us the opportunity to meet our distributors requirements on how frequently a film runs and we can still show a film while having those fun (and more lucrative) concerts!   MV: Describe the support that the State receives from the board of directors and the community for these efforts. KB: To say that The State Theatre has the best board in town is not hyperbole.  To a person, each manifests a sincere passion for the mission of The State, a commitment to their fiduciary duties, and a willingness to give generously in support of this nonprofit theater.

MV: How can people support the State and do you offer membership programs? KB: Many people don’t realize that The State is a nonprofit theatre.  We receive no government support, and ticket sales and concessions don’t fully cover the cost of this mission.  People can help by giving generously, participating in special events, and by coming regularly.  We have a great membership program with a lot of perks including free movie tickets and free bags of our famous popcorn with real butter!  We have added films and events that are free for our members and on certain occasions our members get a free glass of bubbly when they check in at our member table. MV: If someone doesn’t know about the State, what do they need to know? KB: The State Theatre engages the creative and innovative spirit of our community to enhance the quality of life for all people. We are a venue that reach all segments of our community with affordable, accessible and inclusive programming that enlightens, educates and entertains.  We provide an environment to explore cultural diversity, different world views and creativity through film, performance, and other media. BIG VIEW fffffffffffffffffff

Home for the Holidays

Sitting by the fire, hot cocoa with whipped

cream and peppermint schnapps, stockings on the mantel, holiday parties; so many things can make you feel at home. Maybe watching like one of the iconic holiday movies of all time, White Christmas or Christmas Vacation. To me, “home” isn’t necessarily literally sitting on your couch, but it’s the feeling you have when you are with friends, out to dinner, enjoying a coffee, catching a vintage movie, walking around your neighborhood

By Chris Murphy or even getting a cocktail at your fave watering hole with friends, but yes, that feeling when you are at peace, couchside or fireside in your house is one of the best feelings in the world.   This is the

time of year when you hope to experiences as much of this as possible.   Home is also where we do business, where we shop, what we listen to and what we eat and drink.  Additionally, as we get into

winter, the roads are busier, the airports are jammed and we all want to experience things that are close to home, here in Stanislaus County and into the hills. Living local makes you feel good and the benefit that our community gets when we all support each other is multiplied many times.   As we think about home, we also want to make sure that we lend a hand to those that are between homes, missing family, lost, broken or just in a bad spot.  We all have something extra that can be given to those in need.  It is the season of giving, and that can mean so many different things.  Sometimes the smallest token of appreciation can mean so much and two hours of your time ringing the bell for Salvation Army can improve the condition of many families.  As we celebrate this season, gather with friends and family, let’s make sure that we are thinking of others.  When we do, we shine inside and we all become so much better and makes our community stronger.

The classics of the classics! Holiday Movies at the State

We hope you love holiday Christmas movies like we do. The State Theatre opened on Christmas Day in 1934, showing the Flirtation Walk.  This year will be so very special as they open the new “Jewel” Theatre adjacent to the main auditorium.  You can expect some cool innovative films and of course the amazing State Theatre popcorn with real butter and a refreshing “Statetini”.  December is your hook up this season for the classics like It’s A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Elf, and even Nightmare Before Christmas on Friday the 13th.  And yes, Die Hard is actually a Christmas movie.  There is something for every member of the family and when winter break hits, you have your movie playlist all set.  Get your tix in advance at www.thestate.org  12/13 – Nightmare Before Christmas – 7 pm

12/15 - How the Grinch Stole Christmas – 5pm 12/18 -  Home Alone – 7 pm 12/20 -  Die Hard – 7 pm 12/22 -  Elf – 3 pm 12/23 -  A Christmas Story – 4 pm 12/24 -  It’s A Wonderful Life – 4 pm

The State will be celebrating it’s 85th Birthday on December 21. There will be a full day of FREE family entertainment.    16

Do you believe? Well we do, and this is the time of year when we hear the jingle of the sleighbells and hope you do too.   This is one of those special things that bring a smile to kids’ faces. So those that are looking for a Modesto Santa experience, there are a couple of places you can enjoy and get your message to the big guy.

Visions of Sugar Plums

We have all heard this line in the Night Before Christmas and experienced the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker.   But we were wondering, what is a Sugar Plum?  Is it a plum dipped and glazed in sugar?  Are they chocolate covered?  If that was your vision, it is something completely different.  Did you know that they are kind of dried fruit treat with spices, orange zest, nutmeg and powdered sugar and other ingredients?   We threw out the challenge to our friend Marie Rodin and she is all set to make some sugar plums for the Rockin Holiday opening night!   We are so excited and we hope you all will like them so she will do them all season long.

For over 60 years on Christmas Eve, NORAD tracks Santa Claus leaving the North Pole and delivering presents to children around the world. The program is in the tradition of the September 1897 editorial “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” in the New York Sun. NORAD is the North American Aerospace Defense Command. You can check the info all month long. https://www.noradsanta.org/

Apres Skate

A night on the town means a night on the town.   If you are going to get all spiffed up to head downtown to go ice skating, you need to think about what you are doing to do before, especially after skating.  This is what we call Aprés Skate.  You know, just like Aprés Ski after a good day on the slopes, you head to the lounge for a cocktail, and this is no different.  You had a great time, skated singles and doubles, and now it is time to relax, with a special holiday cocktail, and enjoy downtown Modesto.  Right around the corner from Modesto on Ice is our own Rockin’ Holiday, were you can meet up with Rockin’ Santa and experience the Rockin’ Snow.  You can catch a movie at the Brenden Theatres in the new comfy recliners after a nice dinner at Fuzio, Ralston’s Goat, Tresetti’s or Graffiti Dogs.  You can walk down 11th St and find so many tasty options, or walk over to the Gallo Center, Prospect Theatre or The State Theatre for a show.  If you are skating late, you just might want a nice nightcap with friends and Uber home.   Don’t forget, there is live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Rockin North Pole Stage in 10th St Plaza.  No matter what, spend the day, or the evening in downtown and find something new to do.

SONGWRITING VIEW What a year! What an abundance of milestones. KCBP 95.5 FM is up and running bring you pertinent local features, news and music. I’m personally humbled by being recognized last March as a Stanislaus County Commission for Women Outstanding Woman of the year for contributions in music and winning the Valley Talent Project Best Original Composition. I mention these because without support and partnerships with many, and loyal readership from you of the Songwriter View column, the projects I advocate could not succeed. Thanks to you last month’s SHARE THE WARMTH Concert and Coat Drive harvested hundreds of pieces of outerwear to benefit the Inter Faith Ministries of Greater Modesto Clothes Closet. Donation Receptacles will be stationed throughout the season at Deva Cafe and Gottschalk’s Music. Which leads me to mention our illustrious ModestoView Founder and Publisher, Chris Murphy, 2019 VFW Citizen Of the year for continuing to be an “energetic Promoter of all things good.” Deva Cafe, the longest running eatery in downtown Modesto will close out the year with special weekend music from Soulful Jazz to Americana styles. 12/1 Seth Baker, 12/7 Ashman, Nelson and Davis, 12/8 Tim and Patty, 12/14 Nathan the One Man Band, 12/15 Mattea, and 12/22 Vanessa Valencia. Music starts at 10 am. The Barkin Dog Grill will host the last ModestoView Wine Wednesday event of 2019

Last Act

By Patty Castillo Davis with A Gathering of the Vibes on 12/11 at 7 pm. This evening of music will feature special guests and some holiday music. Tip jar donations will purchase socks, gloves, scarves and beanies for those in need. Living Proud, a commemoration on World AIDS Day will continue the focus on awareness with an event at Modesto Center Plaza featuring music by Melynda Rodriguez and a whole roster of artists. On Friday, December 6, Marirose will perform at Sushi Hub in Stockton at 5:30 pm. Abraham Steve Mackay continues his residency at The Kitchen at Stonebridge in Stockton Monday through Thursday from 5-9 pm. Local Songwriters US4Love, Candace Lamb and Koala and the Golden Boy will participate in Idol Beer Works Ugly Sweater Food Drive in Lodi from 6-11pm. And about the tip jar... More often than not, where you will find live music you will see The Tip Jar. Many times this is the only payment these hard working artists receive and depending on demographics, they are not receiving scale either. You enjoy the music, you appreciate the effort, you make requests-please drop some money in to express your respect. Have a happy safe holiday, keep on supporting local music, continue to perpetuate opportunities for women performers, transform your business space into a music venue, make giant plans to celebrate Modesto’s 150 years and keep holding your dreams for 2020. See you next year.

JAZZ&WORLD VIEW

If you luv music you’re gonna love this By Eric Benson We will miss the musical offering that took place over years at the Barkin’ Dog Grill that supported music for allages in a family friendly environment. But what we have really lost is a great spot for family friendly live music and the arts. Where I grew up in Bezerkeley California there were pizza parlors,  church venues and the school’s that gave a home to play live music. We have some of that here but we need more, it would be nice to create another venue that supports the musicians and artists of tomorrow and gives them a place to create and thrive today!. Just a thought. On to the business at hand. We will be bringing back Blue Monday Party to its new home Café Urbano, formerly of Clayton’s Café where we played almost 700 Mondays over eight years. The spot is one of my favorites for live music as it is big enough but intimate, dance floor, great food , full bar and accommodates an all-age venue. So come out for the Blue Monday Christmas Party Dec 9th which will feature Jazz guitarist virtuoso Barry Finnerty formerly of Miles Davis, TOP,

The

Jaco Pastorius and others. House band will feature Johnny Valdes on Guitar, Conrad Johnson and John Adey on Bass, Dave Hawks’s drums, horn section Raul Slaps & Jamie Dubberly on Bone, Kevin Marin, Trumpet, Andrew Rosenblum on Sax, with Keys David Dow and Eric Benson. We will be playing some of Barry‘s arrangements of people he’s played with as well as some Christmas jems, Jazz, R & B, Funk, Latin of the Blues. Gig from the downbeat of 7 PM, goes till 10 PM. And don’t go looking for the Dave Dow Thursday night jam at the Barkin’ Dog as it has changed to the Ralston’s Goat on 10th street. Dave’s Jam has the same hours 7 to 10 PM for people to sit in a play with the house band.  The new season for the Gallo in is with diverse offering. In December featuring Dec 2nd Asleep at the Wheel, Dec 3rd John Tesh Acoustic Christmas, Dec 6 & &7th Modesto Symphony Orchestra with chorus Holliday Pops, and 13th to 22nd Central West Ballet the Nutcracker. Save the date Jan 18th a Carol King the Musical tribute, you will see

Established 1977

me there for that one. On the Casino circuit Jackson Rancheria is having Dec 15th Beatles tribute the White Album which sounds like fun. This is part of the tribute package doing an entire album sometimes note for note. All the best, peace out! Eric Benson, cell 209- 918-7033, email; Mbenson@ fire2wire.com.

COMEDY VIEW Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

By Felicia Aleman

Yup, it’s time. After two years this is my last Comedy View. I decided since I’ve hardly performed this last year I should step down. Why? A lack of transportation. I’ve had 4 cars in the last year and have destroyed two transmissions, an ignition that cost more than the car was worth and I am currently hoping the transmission repairs on my current car actually work. Basically, if you want your car to blow the transmission I am your woman. I can also fill your car with fast food wrappers if you need it at no extra charge. I’ve also had issues with my mental health. When you are horrified to leave your house it’s hard to go out and be funny. I have had mental health issues since second grade and I’ve been afraid to talk too much about it, but here I am. I take my meds twice daily with more consistency than I ever took birth control. The result of not taking either of them is pretty much the same--lots of crying. I plan to continue to keep working on my comedy, but here’s the next part. My job requires me to travel. I know, it sounds glamorous, but I inspect trailer parks. It’s hard to find an open mic in Hog Nipple, Arkansas. Though oddly enough I was able to find an Amish gas station. I wish I could tell

you more about it, but I was afraid to stop. It was just too contradictory and Children of the Corn feeling. Also, I didn’t want to find out about Amish toilet paper--sounds way too splintery and/or corn cobb-ish. In fact, this column is coming to you from Georgia. This is the best place I’ve stayed so far. No cockroaches hogging the covers. So, I wish good luck to Chris Teicheira who will be taking over along with a few other guest writers. I’m sure they will be awesome and more skilled than I am with my crayon. I will miss the notoriety: in two years at least two people have recognized me. Stay hydrated. I love both of you who’ve been paying attention and go out and see some live comedy at a venue near you.

The Mean Green in Fitness By Efren Martinez

Saving the best Run of 2019 for last.

On Saturday, December 14th, The Spirit of Giving Run takes place once again. This event is by far one of the most festive and fun runs for runners and walkers alike. It’s a 5K run or walk with a street like festival in our beautiful downtown City of Modesto. The run features a separate start line, with The Quake Mobile DJ to help you get your Holiday Christmas run on, only to have a just as exciting finish line near Brenden Theaters. Holiday Christmas Cheer will be greeting you as you shoot down to the finish line with loads of snow falling from the sky, thanks to our Modesto View Magazine. Soon after your run is done, the children will also be able to get into the healthy Holiday family fun with the free kids fun run. Kids! We need all of you to help us chase that Christmas stealing Grinch out of Modesto. He’s up to his old tricks again and word on the street is that he’s been seen training hard at Planet Fitness to get even faster. As you know Planet Fitness welcomes everyone including The Grinch. So in order to help us

save Christmas my friends at Planet Fitness are offering you this special promotion to join our healthy lifestyle so that you too are ready for The Spirit of Giving Run. Starting December 1st, Planet Fitness will waive your enrollment fee for new members who show their race BIB from The Spirit of Giving Run or just mention The Spirit of Giving Run and get the same deal. WOW! The Spirit of Giving Run also features a canned food drive that will benefit our friends at the Gospel Mission. Please bring lots of canned food items to the Event or consider making a monetary donation and get a raffle ticket (up to 10 tickets) for a chance to win the Mystery Prize. Let’s talk conditioning. Your fitness Quake DJ recommends for all runners to get themselves acclimated prior to your run/walk. Since it takes place on December 14th you can bet the chill will be in the air. Try getting a few runs/walks outside in the early morning prior to your Sprit of Giving Run. This will help you acclimate yourself by running in the cold Christmas type weather. For more information on The Spirit of Giving Run; log onto www.modestospiritofgiving. org/ and remember to like them on Facebook. Hey friends, your DJ in Fitness, The Quake Mobile DJ and his wife wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The last time you heard local band music came out of the speakers of a car? Hopefully, that is all about to change. KCBP 95.5 FM is Modesto’s community radio station and already has been playing a fair amount of local artists and is where my dial has been for the last several months. On Monday, November 24th my new radio show, Modesto Area Music aired for the first time on KCBP. It was a special hour of local music released on vinyl. You can hear Modesto Area Music with Middagh Goodwinn broadcast weekly at 5 pm every Monday and rebroadcast on Friday at 6 pm and Saturday at 9 pm. You will listen to songs of all genres spanning several decades performed by musicians from the greater 209. My goal with the show is to continue to promote and grow and showcase our local

music scene. To allow local artists to have that “electric” feeling of hearing a song they wrote or recorded played on the radio. If you are interested in being included in my show, you can email songs appropriate for airing to mamarecords209@ gmail.com and make sure you cc musickcbp@gmail.com so the station can consider it for regular rotation. I am looking forward to what will happen next year, a new decade, the Roaring Twenties. Downtown Modesto is more vibrant than it has been in years; there are more opportunities to hear locals perform and talk of some new spaces opening up that will allow even more live music. None of this will last without our continued support. I urge you to step up and go out more often, supporting the restaurants and cafes that host live music, especially on the off nights. Go check out an open mic or better yet get up on stage and perform a song or tell a joke at one. I want everyone to make a New Years resolution to go out more, to bring your friends and family and fill up our venues. Music and art are meant to be enjoyed with others.

BARGAIN VIEW

Wonderful Christmastime By Monica Barber

It’s time to have a wonderful Christmas

season! Ms. M has been ready for Christmas for a bit. Enjoying a warm peppermint infused hot cocoa at the Queen Bean Coffee House she’s reminiscing on the year… where did it go? The best memories to look back at are the ones that touch our hearts because we’ve shared them with others. Here are a few ways to keep your coins and bells jingling during the holidays. Christmas is a delight in Modesto! December 7th is a day of fun that leads up to it’s Celebration Lights “Candyland” Parade. Breakfast with Santa, The Dickens’ faire at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market are family friendly events that lead up to the evening parade. It’s not Christmas without talking with Santa, the annual breakfast with Santa at the Senior Center starts off at 8:30am until 11am. From 7am-3pm, Dickens Faire transports The McHenry Mansion to the Victorian

era with costumed carolers wagon rides amid food & crafts vendors. Dickens:www. mchenrymuseum.org Santa: Visit Modesto Office 209-526-5588 & Senior Ctr, 211 Bodem St. The Celebration of Lights “Candyland” parade makes it way through Downtown Modesto at 5:30pm on December 7th and the Rockin holiday celebration kicks off in 10th Street Plaza afterwards. Enjoy the brightly lit floats of the parade and then stay to rock out with Santa and his elves to some Christmas sounds! Info & full parade map: http://modestogov.com/553/HolidayParade Sometimes holiday cheer requires some good company and spirits involved. So why not pull out your favorite Santa hat, suit, elf ensemble or just plan ugly sweater and check out the Annual Modesto Santa Con on December 14th. Meet up at Ralston’s Goat at 5:30pm for a no-nonsense good holiday time with a traveling party of Santa’s. 21+ Info & registration:https:// www.santacon.info/Modesto-CA/ A bit of candlelight sets the mood to step into the past. The Year Comes To A Close By Sofia Johnson

As the year comes to a close, we get to experience some of the best Modesto has to offer, starting with our beautiful State Theater. All month there will be holiday movies and events for the community to enjoy. On December 21st there will be an all day celebration from 8am-10pm with free showings of all your favorite Saturday morning cartoons for the State’s 85th birthday. Earlier showings will be targeted toward the younger crowd and nights being for a more mature audience. There will also be Christmas classics such as Elf and Home Alone showing throughout the month that I highly suggest you check out on https://thestate.org. As if it couldn’t get any better, they will also be showing a Warren Miller film on December 6th and

7th. With the purchase of a ticket you donate to the Society for Disabilities and get a free lift ticket to Bear. Win-win! Another way to enjoy these movies is in the comfort of your own home. The best way to do this is by wrapping them up like gifts and unwrapping it when are in the spirit to watch one. By doing this you save the hassle of agreeing on a Christmas movie and you can even use them as decoration. My favorite memories have to be making a pillow bed on the floor in front of the television and cuddling up with my sister to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol and decorating the tree while watching Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas with my mom.  I am beyond excited for what this month is going to bring and I hope you are as well. Happy Holiday’s Modesto, see you next year!

ZEN VIEW Gratitude

By Mary Layton

What are you grateful for? Our family

decided that we will only get gifts for the kids in the family. I’m grateful for that because I’m not really that fond of the shopping frenzy, or the pressure to find just the perfect gift for everyone. On the other hand if I come across something unusual and unique I will gift it to the right person. Finding the right gift for someone is a real pleasure. Coming from a Zen point of view however, I can easily settle with a less materialistic approach. I love the more simple and fundamental aspects of Christmas, the wonderful smell of a live or cut Christmas tree, the energy of green and red colors everywhere, the candles and the sparkle of Christmas lights, the smell of cookies and the sounds of bells and Christmas music. It’s the season again to spread the good cheer and love. This is the last month of 2019 and somehow I find that it makes for a special Christmas season

as we are heading into 2020. We all have been so busy with our lives all year long! I think of Christmas as a celebration of life. Finally we have some time to be with our loved ones, family, friends, coworkers and neighbors or to be by ourselves, to slow down, recuperate and appreciate all the things that we have, a roof over our head, shelter, good food and company. Even if we have suffered losses, there’s always something to be grateful for. Everything about us, our bodies, our mind and spirit is miraculous. There’s the sky, sun, moon and the stars, the sunsets and sunrises, the tweeting of a bird, the purring of a cat or a child’s smile that can bring peace and gratitude.  I’m also grateful how much more appealing Modesto has become. We can see world-class opera here, great concerts, art shows, ballet and fun parades in downtown. There’s so much more to do and experience here now.  Enjoy the season of giving. Have a very beautiful Christmas! Give a month of T’ai chi classes as a Christmas gift. Go to taichi4modesto. com for details, call (209)572-4518.

POET VIEW

Ill List Poetry Slam

One of the most amazing nights of the year turns 15! Yes, the Ill List, where  poets from all over the USA converge to go head to head in verbal poetry combat  at the State Theatre produced by Sam Pierstorff and Ruhi Sheikh is an annual sold-out success and the creativity that is delivered is amazing.  Set in two rounds, the poems are judged by audience members and the winner takes home some big cash.   ModestoView and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group are the title sponsors again this year, and we are proud to help bring this amazing night and thank Sam and Ruhi for making this happen.   We can’t wait to see our annual commercial. This is sold out so don’t lose your tickets and beware of scalpers. December 14, 7 pm - State Theatre - www.thestate.org
