This is a month for being out and about. The March to April transition is quite magical. From the almond blossoms to the bright flowers of spring, it seems like a magic wand is waved, or someone like Rayleen Wagner is riding her bicycle spreading the spring magic. Even more than that, it’s about sharing experiences in real life.
Many communities face a serious problem of loneliness with our youth, teens and even adults and it’s something were we can all make a difference. How? Well first, put down the phones. Yeah, I know we need our phones for information and directions, but it’s not a substitute for connecting with others. As a grandparent, there is nothing more important to me than being there for my grandkids, getting out on the bike trail, exploring the Graffiti USA Museum, cruising the famer’s market. or getting out on the ski slopes. Many things are free, but what you gain is new shared experiences, new things to talk about with new ideas that are all your own. It can be as simple as

a walk to look at our murals with a picnic from home. You don’t need an influencer to tell you how have a great life. You are your own influencer. That’s powerful.
I love real experiences. It’s super special when people open a business, restaurant or bar that creates an escape, or an immersive experience. Wonderful that people take the time to make something special; then deliver the service that makes you want to come back. That’s really the secret sauce. Is Modesto, your event, or your business setting an expectation and then deliver to it? It’s up to all of us to make that happen. When people visit Modesto, do they leave here finding it was better than they thought or lived up to expectations? I think we should all take this personally. It makes us better, and it create a way to hold people or organizations accountable for the promises or commitments made.
Two examples this month are the Intermission and the reimagined Tiki Lounge that we highlight this month. As Trader Murf, I am super excited. There’s a theme, a vibe, and the food or service sucks you in

and you enjoy it more. It’s that something special that makes it memorable. What’s your something special? What’s your thing that makes you different? Think about that for whatever you do. When I was Global Marketing Director for Specialized Bicycles, we asked ourselves that with every product, every ad, and every event and our motto was “innovate or die”. We should be proud. Few cities our size have an opera, symphony, performing arts center, ballet, indie theatre, vintage movie theatre, children’s museum, classic car museum, junior college, concert band in the park, history and natural history museum and so much more. BUT, it’s up to us to make sure these all thrive. Most of these need the help of volunteers and donors. We need strong local companies that support the programs. Every time you support a local business, it helps them reinvest in our community. How many local programs or events are sponsored by Amazon? Think about that. Without the support of our local companies, many of the things we love may not exist. Every dollar you spend here in town means something. Thanks to the support of local companies, we are able to design, print and deliver this magazine to our community. We are all connected. I am grateful for my family, friends, colleagues and the local businesses that team up with us.
I hope to see you out and about, enjoying some of the many things Modesto offers and please, let me know what you like, or don’t like, so we can make it better.
With gratitude,
Chris Murphy Founder & Publisher,

Every spring, the large signs around town remind us that Love Modesto is coming soon. This cit-wide volunteer day has been happening every April for the last 17 years and has inspired thousands of people to give back to our community. In a world that is seemingly more divided each and every day, Love Modesto provides an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to join together to make a difference in their community. To come alongside their neighbors and show love to those in need. Cleaning parks, writing thank you notes to veterans, encouraging hospice patients, washing emergency vehicles, buying new pajamas for children in foster care, and

handing out flowers to the elderly are just a handful of the projects that community members can sign up for. We hear year after year from people who have joined us about what an inspiring day it is!
But the vision behind Love Modesto has always been to use this one day event to inspire volunteerism year-round.
Statistics show that volunteerism reduces stress, combats depression, prevents feelings of isolation, and gives us a sense of purpose and meaning. Did you know it is reported 90% of Americans want to volunteer but only 1 in 4 actually do?
One of the identified barriers is not having an easy way to find opportunities so we have created Volunteer Central to help solve this issue. This online platform is designed to make finding places to volunteer simple and inspiring.
We believe everyone has a passion; something they care deeply about. We want to help people find ways to use their passion to impact others through volunteering by providing an easy way for people to find volunteer opportunities happening all year long.
Whether you need community service hours, want a team-building project for your workplace, or love finding ways to serve together as a family, Volunteer Central makes it easy to get started.

For singer-songwriter Candice Lamb, writing begins unplanned and driven by raw emotion.
“I tend to write from a place of a strong feeling coming up,” Lamb says. “Sometimes I don’t know what I’m going to say. Sometimes I press record and start singing and playing, and I’ll be super lucky if it ends up being a whole song in one moment of doing that.”
Those moments of creative spontaneity have become part of her process. Instead of forcing a song into shape, Lamb listens for what is already present emotionally and lets the music reveal it.
Earlier in her songwriting life, this usually meant writing about heartbreak. Songs became a channel to move through difficult transitions. “That was my way of coping with ending relationships or situations that were painful. It was also my way of processing what I learned from those experiences.”
Over time, her focus has shifted. Themes of self-acceptance and spiritual reflection have become central to her work. “Sometimes loneliness comes up,” Lamb explains. “It feels good to be able to sit with that and know that that is happening when it is, and write about the truth in allowing that to be as it is. It’s not even about fixing the feelings.”
by Mattéa Overstreet

That openness appears clearly in her song “I Wanna Feel It All.” The title reflects a philosophy that has emerged through joy and grief. Lamb describes witnessing her grandmother’s final moments and the complicated mixture of love, loss, and gratitude that existed in that space.
“There’s grief, but there’s also this richness of an experience,” she says. “Seeing your grandmother’s last breath and being there with love and being able to tell her how much you love her… It’s something I can’t really put into words, but I can put it into a feeling when I’m singing ‘I wanna feel it all.’”
In many ways, Lamb’s songs are intrinsic reminders. While writing, she sometimes realizes the message is meant for herself as much as anyone listening.
“Maybe at times I’m writing for myself to convince myself,” she says with a laugh. “Like telling myself, ‘It’s okay to feel. It’s okay. I’m okay. I’ll get through this.’”
This perspective gives her music a deeply spiritual quality. Her songs encourage listeners to stay present with their emotions rather than rushing past them. Joy, grief, loneliness, and love all belong to the same human experience.

Not only do iconic buildings dot Modesto’s skyline, but so do its notable trees. From the Mary Grogan Oak Grove Woodland, to the numerous parks around town, to the tree-lined neighborhoods with Modesto Ash, Sycamore, Pistache, and Ginkgo, Modesto is a Tree City USA. Providing bountiful character and color during the fall season and ample shade during the summer, Modesto’s urban forest is far reaching and includes some unique varietals - perhaps none more eyecatching or ear-catching than the towering evergreen conifer at the southeastern corner of Graceada Park: the Bunya Bunya Tree. Buyna Bunya trees, scientifically named Araucaria bidwilli, are originally native to Australia and were introduced in compatible climates like California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an exotic ornamental evergreens for gardens and parks. Known for their distinctly spiny branches, dome-like canopy, and heavy large-sized cones, a few bunya bunya trees can be found in and around Modesto.
Modesto’s Bunya Bunya Tree was dedicated on April 17, 1916 by the Modesto chapter of the Native Sons of the Golden West as part of its 39th Annual Grand Parlor Session reception hosted in Modesto for over 500 members from across California, reflected in a plaque found at near the base of the tree. At the time, it was incorrectly identified to be a Monkey Puzzle Tree, and had actually already been present in Graceada Park prior to the Native Sons’
By Harrison Power @historyharrison

dedication, possibly making the tree older than estimated.
Graceada Park had originally contained at least two additional bunya bunya trees, located near the old playground, however those were ultimately removed to reduce potential hazards to children some time between 1959 and 1961. To address the concern of large bunya bunya cones falling from the remaining Bunya Bunya Tree, a planterbed was installed around the base of the tree in 1989 to keep parkgoers clear of the cone zone.
Even though Graceada Park was deemed a City Landmark in 1991, the Bunya Bunya was designated City Landmark #46 as a standalone historic resource by the City Council in November 1998. As of that time, the tree was estimated to be approximately 116 feet tall, making it one of if not the tallest trees in Modesto, and was thought to be at least 82 years old. Going off of the age estimation, the Bunya Bunya Tree as of 2026 would be at least 110 years old, but could be even older if it was already planted prior to its 1916 dedication As we celebrate our beautiful and unique natural resources around us, especially on Earth Day, we can take stock of the majestic and historic trees that grace Modesto’s skyline. To learn more about how to participate in efforts to support Modesto’s treescape and highlight the notable trees around us, contact Urban Forest Modesto at urbanforestmodesto@gmail.com!

The Modesto Artists Movement is proud to present two standout opportunities this April (National Poetry Month!) for poets and spoken word enthusiasts!
On the second Wednesday of the month (4/8), Queen Bean Coffee & Social House will once again transform into a hub of rhythm, language, and a whole lot of chaos in the best way. Our Poetry Night and Haiku Battle features live poetry performances, musical accompaniment, handmade trophies, and a ruckus crowd. There’s also $100 on the line for the best poem of the night.
And then there’s the Haiku Battle. This month’s theme: “Shaiku,” a hybrid, shadebased twist on the traditional form only sharper, more clever, and a little but ruthless. Haiku is basically a poetic roast battle in 5-7-5. Come for the poetry and stay for the antics.
Then, on Wednesday, April 29, the energy builds toward one of the most anticipated events of the season: SLaM on Rye! April’s High Stakes Poetry Slam!
This is not just another open mic poetry night. This is the competitive art of poetry performance! Poets get 3 minutes to read one original poem. The audience judges and the highest scoring poets move on to compete in a second round.
The winner will take home $200 and, more importantly, earn an automatic bid

to compete at The ILL LIST Poetry Slam this December at the State Theatre, one of the country’s most prestigious spoken word stages!
SLaM on RyE will also feature a special performance by the Stockton Youth Poet Slam Team, showcasing the next generation of voices already shaping the future of poetry in the Central Valley.
As City of Modesto Poet Laureate Angela Drew reminds us, “poetry lives here.” April is your invitation to find out. Whether you’re stepping up to the mic for the first time, or hooting and hollering for your favorite piece, or just sitting back to soak up the incredible spoken word, poetry absolutely lives in Modesto and we are going to be quiet about it!

This is Modesto’s largest party of the year! Over 70 porches and even more bands across the College and La Loma and the Bodem/Morris Area neighborhoods will be making a huge party. Grab your bicycle and go from house to house, porch to porch and hear most of Modesto’s favorite musicians. This is a fun day to hang out with friends and find new bands. Remember, the homeowners and the bands are donating their porches and their performance so PLEASE tip these folks during the day from noon- 5 pm. Bring water and lawn chairs and enjoy the day. Final maps and band listings will be posted later this month at www. modestoporchfest.com
Make as point to get over to LaLoma area and Edgebrook Dr for music fun and show the other side of the creek some love.

Cocktails are about escape and connecting. Escape from the daily grind, the news of the world, or just a create your own time to detach, enjoy the company of others. Put your phones down, and meet up, chat and enjoy. Let’s explore Intermission.

One of my and my wife’s favorite songs is Steppin’ Out by Joe Jackson. It just puts you in the mood for a glam night, right out of a vintage movie and an escape from the real world. Getting dressed up for an evening is fun and the Intermission is the perfect place to go. It’s velvety, luscious, retro, glam, artsy and a step back in golden age movie time. Before or after a show, the Intermission puts glamour into every visit. Evangeline Shears keeps the Intermission cocktail menu in a sweet spot, vintage & classic. We look at some new faves based on rum, vodka and whiskey. April heads into spring fresh and 1940s Cuba with a new “Hotel Nacional de Cuba”, with white rum, apricot liqueur, pineapple juice, lime and simple syrup. Served in a coupe, it’s light and refreshing and very tasty putting you in a Hemmingway mood. A nod to the 50s is the Transfusion, allegedly a post-golf favorite of President Eisenhower with a
vodka base with grape juice, ginger beer and lime. Wow, this really is a transfusion served in a nice tall glass.
Another scandalous vintage treat is the Scofflaw, based on Bourbon, with vermouth, lemon juice, grenadine, touch of orange juice, lime, simple syrup with Sauvignon Blanc served in a coupe. This is a real fresh treat all beautifully created and served by Jennifer Garcia, John Motta and Gina Story.
Tiki fans will love the Tonga Punch with a delicious blend of lime, lemon and orange juices with grenadine, curacao and Bacardi silver and served in a tall glass with fresh lime.

Don’t miss their small bites menu offerings and of course, State Theatre popcorn.
The Intermission is on the corner of 13th and J and part of the State Theatre. The intermission has re-energized this block of J Street, with Lo-Fi Labs bookending the block at 14th. Dinner, movie and cocktails, all in one block. Make sure you try these new specialties. Of course, you can get any of your other favorite drinks.

Since the 1940s, Tiki bars have been one of the ultimate escapes and quite possibly saved us after World War II as the soldiers returned from the South Pacific. Out of the daylight, with exotic Polynesian music, mixed with the bamboo and the tastes of rum cocktails, many enjoy drinks inspired by “Trader” Vic Bergeron and Don the Beachcomber. The Tiki Lounge in Modesto has returned, and this incarnation is a return to the vintage and beautiful Tiki experience, with craft cocktails that will please the rum connoisseurs. Modesto’s Tiki is enshrined in the “Book of Tiki” and was part of the original Ken Kimes network of Tiki themed lounges and motels. Les Knoll and Gina Rossi both have a history connecting to the Tiki and have reimagined this A-frame legend for todays’ Tiki culture. The Tiki has many memories for many Modestans. My wife Becky and I used to escape to the Tiki to get lost, playing darts and enjoying the jukebox and Mai Tais. Gina once worked at the Tiki and Les was an early regular, and when the opportunity came to reopen this legendary space, they eagerly took it on and bring their other bar expertise to the Tiki.
First, a flashback walking in the back door, the neon “Tiki” still greets you. Inside, it’s a full Tiki transformation with comfortable

couches and oversized chairs, cool vintage Tiki art and greenery, glass floats, a restored bar and best of all, the fire pit is back with a great dark corner behind it. The front patio features tiki umbrellas and is a good hideaway from McHenry Ave.
Now open daily, 3 pm until 12am or whenever, the Tiki is a welcome escape. Kaitlyn Cavanaugh leads the bar team and has been developing a rum forward cocktail menu with Les and Gina along with other surprises.

ment to the Rum flavors and one of my immediate favorites is the “Saturn”, complete with a special ring garnish featuring Dry Gin, lemon, falernum, orgeat and a dash of bitters. Out of this world.
Also on the tiki deck are the Summer Hurricane with Captain, prosecco, passion fruit and the Almond Storm with amaretto dark rum, bitters with fresh lime, great twists on some favorites. Of course, any of your other favorite cocktails or beers are on the menu.
The key theme of the new Tiki Lounge is respect to the Tiki culture and traditions and the memories of Mitch Maisetti and Pater Mah loom large in the Modesto Tiki history with a nod to the future of Tiki culture and a fresh cocktail menu.
The bar team includes team includes Karma Mize and Saraha Cline.
It’s great to have two successful partners team up on this Modesto icon. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have already. It’s comfortable, fresh but a familiar and friendly escape. If those walls could talk.

The last great Modesto potsticker in Modesto was served on New Year’s Eve in 2019. Full transparency, there may be a lot of different opinions on this, but per the ViewCrew team of experts, Minnie’s was the gold standard. We are on a continual search for good potstickers and this month we went to the “House of Potsticker” on McHenry. Greeted warmly by Andy, we settled in for a Crab Rangoon and order of Potstickers, aka pork dumplings and a Tsingtao beer. These were good. The pork filling was flavorful, the dumpling case was not too thick and had a good combination of pan fry and steam cooking. They have an extensive menu with something for everyone. Check it out.

Our high heels are on for “Walk a Mile” in their shoes supporting the Haven Center
Why? I am a husband, father of daughters and granddaughters, and I am raising money and awareness to stop sexual abuse and domestic violence. There is no room for abuse in our society and we have to speak out, walk and stand for those that are defenseless and need the strength to get away from abusers. We hope that you will help support Haven Center, supporting all who are victims here in our community. We can do this and any contribution will help so very much. Please take a minute to donate to this really important organization and it’s the least I can do to support the women in my life and those we don’t even know.

Oh yeah, you can wear any shoes that mean something to you. The high heels catch your attention, but abuse can reach anyone. So help me and ModestoView support the mission to stop abuse and help make a difference.

The Modesto Certified Farmers Market first opened on July 7th 1979, now 46 years strong and still located on 16th Street between H & I Streets. Ray Rodgers and Ron Alves, both MJC Ag Instructors and then-Mayor Peggy Mensinger, organized the beginnings of the Farmers market, with only a dozen vendors to begin with. It now hosts a year-round market on Saturdays and beginning again on April 2nd the Thursday market reopens both open 8 am-1 pm. I had the pleasure to ask Shiela Burch about their role in running the Modesto Certified Farmers Market, and what it means to her, and our community. Shop
Modesto View -When did you take the helm at the Farmers Market? What new things have you brought to the event? What drives your passion for the Market? Shiela Burch -I started out as a vendor at the farmer’s market. I served as a board member for several years before transitioning to the administration and management of the farmer’s market. I have managed the market since 2019. At the end of 2020 we decided to make the Saturday farmers market a year-round market, it was long overdue. The Thursday market remains seasonal, running from April to October. This year we will create a small expansion during the summer and open a Farmers Market at the Salida library in June and July.
There is no place like the farmer’s market. Farmers markets are the beating heart of a town. They incubate small farms and small businesses in the most personal way. Farmers who participate in their local farmers market are more likely to stay farming. I myself worked at Farmers Markets in my early 20”s and loved it. I love being outside and educating people about the products

we bring to market. My Family has benefited greatly from participating in the farmer’s market. When we started our family and turned a hobby of agribusiness into a livelihood, we were able to be home with our children and work around our family.
MV-What are the benefits of shopping at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market for local residents? How does the market encourage healthy eating among its community?
SB-The farmer’s market allows people to experience and incorporate new foods into their lives. When I started out as a honey vendor for our small family apiary, I was always shocked by the number of people that had never tasted honey. When the community comes out to shop at the market they are giving back directly to their community and supports the economy at their doorstep. The dollars spent at the farmers market stay local and do not diminish in value.
MV-What initiatives does the market have to promote healthy eating and local produce?
SB-We host Chef demos twice a month at the market that demonstrate what you can do with produce you may have never tried. We facilitate the use of SNAP at the market for those that qualify and also offer a matching incentive.
Every year we host a Senior day at the market that gives coupons to those on fixed incomes. Additionally, families receiving WIC can use their WIC and FMNP coupons at the market.
MV-How many vendors do you host each week on average? How many are certified organic?
SB-We hosts 50 to 60 vendors per market day. More than half of our farmers are certified organic. We have other agricultural products including Meat, Dairy, Mushrooms, Honey, and Fresh locally grown and Milled Flour. We also have Hot food, baked goods and Sourdough bread, Jam, jellies, hot sauce and pickled foods. Artists of all kinds.
MV-With fresh produce direct from farm to table, do you see owners/chefs from

our local restaurants and cafes shopping?
SB-We commonly see restaurants and other service businesses taking advantage of the fresh produce at the market. Along with vendors that create food that is sold at the market.
MV-You host live music at the market, how important is supporting local artists? Do you have a list of performers coming in April? Any favorites over the years?
SB-The Music is such a perk of the day. There are so many great musicians in town, I wish I had more days available. Every year the favorite changes, I think the current market favorite is Mitchell Dill. My list of favorites is much longer.
MV-The Easter Egg Hunt is always a massive hit with kids and families, what are some of the other things you do to mix things up and keep things fresh?
SB-We have craft events every month. Earth Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day activities. We host a chili cook-off in the fall, the Great Pumpkin Giveaway every October, and Trick-or-Treating on or near Halloween.
MV-The Chris Murphy Question: Beatles or Rolling Stones.
SB-The Beatles
MV-Anything else you would like to add?
SB-I would like to add that you all do a fantastic job of keeping things current in this town. Your dedication to making the activities and goings on here in Modesto relevant and accessible is no small feat. Thank you!

As we celebrate at our Pollinator Festival, Earth Day, Love Modesto Day, and enjoy the aftermath of the Almond Blossom explosion, we think about new ways to do things, new things to do and let’s make sure we keep learning, and exploring ways to make things better for all us and our next generations. Clean air is good for all of us.
It’s spring and it is time to celebrate the amazing pollinators that keep the almond and fruit orchards producing. You can learn about the different types of pollinators and there is the most adorable little pollinator parade for the kids. There are educational booths, crafts, music, beehive demonstration, free native wildflower seeds and food trucks at the La Loma Native Garden. Don’t forget to dress up your little pollinator for the Pollinator Parade at 10:30. Presented by the LaLoma Neighborhood and California Native Plant Society. This is a free fun family event.

It doesn’t take that much effort to recycle. In Modesto, there are the blue cans to put your bottles, cans, cardboard and paper so what could be easier. Get cash for your cans and bottles at recycling stations around town. There are even places to recycle your mattresses and electronics. From composting to bulky item collections, check this link to help make a difference. www.modestogov.com/370/Solid-Waste-Division

Gas is expensive right now, so your plug-in hybrid is a good solution. It is very affordable to charge at night, and running around town is mostly on battery, but if you have to go for, the conventional engine takes over. We haven’t put gas in our hybrid for a couple of months. Also, electric cars are simple and require less maintenance, so take that into account. Even if gas gets cheap again, the EV or hybrid is still a good call.
Earth Day is a community event to celebrate sustainability and environmentalism. We are excited to welcome you to Graceada Park in Modesto. There are many local vendors with great ideas to help make our community better and more sustainable so every day is Earth Day.
• Take a picture with local mascots!
• Grab lunch from local food vendors or bring a picnic!
• Meet your councilmembers or the mayor!
• Win a prize for answering recycling trivia!
• Listen to music and play games in Mancini Bowl!

We had a big snow pack a month ago and now the hot weather is melting it fast and the rivers will be running strong, and there may be a few more storms in April. Our friends at Modesto Irrigation District are getting ready for a busy water season managing the water flow. As the snow starts the water flow stronger, deeper and faster. Please watch out for dangerous currents and sudden drop offs. Stay away from the river edges as they are soft and may collapse. Be careful of cold temperatures, rocks and vegetation. Starting off with a write-up on a local singer, Denise Choate. Denise, originally from the south, sang in musicals and church groups as a kid, singing Gospel, and gravitated toward Jazz and R&B. She started doing open mikes and sang for a class that encouraged her. When she moved to Sonora, she found her place with Rod Harris and the groups he was doing and learned Jazz standards and the American songbook of popular music. She is a songwriter and vocal coach and is busy. Last year, she did 60 gigs with her Partner in music, Mark G, in a group called La Diversion. With this group, she covers Jazz, Latin Jazz, and rhythm and blues. Her influences range from Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Etta James, and Nina Simone. You can see her performing in the area, and she will be the guest artist at the Blue Monday party in May.
Blue Monday party Jam continues at Café Urbano on the third Monday of every month, including April 20th. The band features John Adey Bass, Cortez Flores Drums,
By Eric Benson
John Burt on Sax, and your host Eric Benson on keys. We, Blue Monday folks, would like to thank Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson for helping sponsor Blue Monday! So please come out for some live music. The band plays R&B, Funk, and Motown for listening and dancing, with a great 6-piece band, food, and a full bar available.
We all need to work on supporting venues that support the arts and creating new ones, as many great bands need to get out and be heard. Together, we can make it happen and see things thrive! Check out the Intermission on April 2nd for an evening with Jazz guitarist Colt Coleman; on April 16th, enjoy Latin and American Jazz with Denise Choate’s Rhythm and Blues Project; and on April 30th, for an evening of mellow jazz with the Jana Marie Trio. Please support music in the downtown, we can’t do it without you folks!
Some great shows at the Gallo Center, but also check out some great venues out of town: The West Side Theatre in Newman, Yoshi’s Oakland, best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center, Santa Cruz, and Piedmont Piano Company, the Back Door, and the Sound Room, located in Oakland.

Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is welcoming spring with a burst of color, creativity, and hometown pride, as the second art show of 2026 fills the museum with fresh work from artists across our community.

After a busy winter featuring the Reunion Show artists from the former Mistlin and Chartreuse Muse galleries, the museum is shifting gears into a new season of art with the Spring Show—an exhibit designed to feel inviting to first-time visitors and longtime supporters alike.
The Spring Art show consists of local artists, each submitting up to five pieces, creating a wide-ranging collection that spans many styles and materials. Visitors can expect to see everything from paintings and photography to ceramics, stained glass, and mixed media, with plenty of unexpected finds around each turn.
This exhibit is more than a display—it also includes awards. A panel of judges will review the artwork and select standout pieces for prizes, adding a little extra excitement for both artists and guests as the show continues through the beginning of May.

Best of all, the museum is inviting the public to enjoy this exhibit at no cost Friday evenings and weekends now through early May, offering families, friends, and neighbors an easy way to enjoy a little inspiration surrounded by art and classic-car history.

For those who discover a piece they cannot live without, many works are available for purchase through the Museum Gift Store. The process is simple, and the artists keep the proceeds from the sale, making each purchase a direct show of support for local talent.
April will also bring a companion event that blends performance and visual art: “1,000 Words,” a poetry slam sponsored by the Modesto Artist’s Movement, scheduled for April 24th, 2026. The museum expects an energetic night where spoken word and artwork meet in a memorable way.
While the galleries fill with new creations, progress continues behind the scenes as construction moves forward on the Museum’s permanent restrooms—an important step toward the long-awaited opening of the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum lobby and the future California Welcome Center.

Want to support Graffiti USA Museum’s construction and ongoing community-focused programming? All donations received go directly to powering the Museum forward. By Paula Treick DeBoard, National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month and it’s also a month for celebrating independent bookstores. So basically, it’s the best month (even if we are a bit biased). Bookish is part of a Central California Bookstore Crawl happening from April 1 to 30. Each bookstore is offering special deals, freebies or new merch, depending on location. Stop by any store to get your passport and begin your trip to check out these indie bookstores, most of which have opened in the past two years: Bookish; BK Bookstore in Ceres; Scrawl, Scribble & Smirch Bookstore in Gustine; Mountain Bookstore in Sonora; Story Books & Toys in Oakdale (the fearless organizer of this crawl!); Ripon Bookstore in Ripon and Caspian Books in Tracy. This is all leading up to Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 25, a national day of celebrating independent bookstores in our communities. We’d love to see you on the crawl! And of course, April is for poetry lovers… The Aileen Jaffa Young Poets Contest ends on April 3 (see more information on

mostpoetry.org), and on April 14, Second Tuesday Poetry returns to Bookish at 7pm with five featured poets from Escritores del Nuevo Sol/Writers of the New Sun, followed by an open mic. And fiction writers, we haven’t forgotten about you! Bookish Write Club continues on April 6 and 20 with every-other-Monday meet-ups from 6:30-8:30pm. It’s a low-stakes way to meet other writers and (re)commit to your project. Also check out twice-a-month meet-ups for writers and poets at Queen Bean (follow their Instagram account at @ queenbean_coffeehouse.
We’re also welcoming debut horror writer Tamika Thompson to Bookish for the launch of her novel The Curse of Hester Gardens on April 7. We’ll talk horror and writing; books will be for sale, and Tamika can’t wait to meet you! And on April 18, we welcome Faye Snowden to celebrate the release of her Southern gothic novel, A Killing Breath. It features Raven Burns, a detective hunting down her serial killer father – perfect for fans of dark thrillers.

Regular ModestoView readers know that Modesto is key to the history of Rock N Roll. In 1937, KTRB radio signed a young band called Maddox Brothers and Rose. Rose was then 11, and Fred Maddox didn’t know how to play bass. He began slapping his bass to disguise his skills and as he learned, this became the keystone of the Rockabilly slap bass sound that would lead to the birth of rock later. Yes, here in Modesto, sponsored by the former Rice Furniture, on S 9thSt. The rest is history was Elvis, Bill Haley and the Comets and more blew it open for the rest. This music history will be showcased at the Graffiti USA Museum, where a museum space for Radio and Music History will be on display. But this month, check out what the fuss is all about.
Don’t miss the bass slapping rockabilly sound at the State Theatre on April, where JB Presents and ModestoView, Modesto Artists Movement & Trevino’s Barber Shop present the Rockabilly Families Reunion Crazy Daze.

Featuring John Clifton Blues Band and Bill Clifton’s Chicken & Whiskey Band. This MAMA Winning band has been rockin’ the west coast for decades. Also rockin’ the stage is the Daffney Payne Punk Rockabilly band bringing the hits. Local Tony T and the Pendletons psychobilly band will blister the stage and get you going. Enjoy cool classic hot rods outside and hot rockabilly inside. Proceeds go to Peer Recovery Art Project’s 501 C 3 non profit. Doors at 12; show starts at 12:30 p.m. Tickets: $23 in advance or $28 day of.
Also note: CSU Stanislaus’ Frankie Tovar is working on a documentary of Maddox Brothers and Rose that is filming and editing now. Stay tuned
The first Record Store Day took place on April 18th, 2008 and has only gotten bigger over the last two decades. On May 4th, Star Wars is on everyone’s mind worldwide. But it is an extra-special day here in Modesto, USA, home to the creator, George Lucas. The original Star Wars movie was released on May 25, 1977, a day that changed modern film forever. From the opening theme and the rolling script, the world had a new lexicon of interstellar, starships, and even speed measurements. In as little as a few parsecs, this film propelled Modesto native George Lucas into the Hyperspace of film fame.
We have celebrated May the Fourth since 2016, when the Modesto City Council was the first to make an official proclamation, making it Star Wars Day. Yes, friends, this is our day, and we will celebrate and bring the action to the 10th St Plaza. So bring the whole family and join the Northern California Star Wars community in celebrating May 4 in Downtown Modesto—a free, family-friendly event. We have invited the 501st, the Wolves of Mandalore, the Rebel Legion, and Astromech builders to join us at this event. Horizon Point will go full Jedi performing in the Plaza; you can expect a few musical interludes from the movies. There will be vendors, artists, face painters, and two extraordinary guests, Andrew Nelson, who spent more time in the Darth Vader suit than any other actor, and David Gonzales, who portrayed Ak-Rev in the 1997 special edition of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. You won’t want to miss the lightsaber battles as the sun goes down. I will create a Death Star Piñata for the kids to decimate. Everyone is encouraged to cosplay as their favorite Star Wars characters. Monday, May 4th, 5-9 pm in the 10th Street Plaza. The State Theatre will be showing Star Wars Episodes IV, V, and VI on May 2nd and 3rd. Watch them on the big screen, as Lucas intended. The Mandalorian and Grogu are set to premiere on May 2

I open the window and the uplifting, early morning light comes streaming in. I open the door and hear the geese honking as they soar overhead, heading north. I step outside on my morning walk and, feeling the cool breeze, share the buckeye butterflies’ delight as they dance around my body, their newly born lives a surge of graceful, ecstatic movement.
Yet amidst all this glory, I find that my attention today is caught by one small, as-yet-unplanted flower – a dark burgundy-colored ranunculus, its petals still enfolded around a very small yellow pistil at the center. It sits in a small pot just

to this flower because of its “enfoldedness”, its pure potentiality – its about-to-open, not-quite-yet-unfurled feeling of magnificent possibility. Yet I also sense, along with this joyfulness, a little feeling of sadness. Much as I might wish, if only for a moment, to pause the passage of time and hold on to this open space, such beauty is ephemeral. Like the buckeye butterflies, it is transitory; it appears for a while, and then is gone.
Or seemingly so…
In “The Waking”, one of my favorite poets, Theodore Roethke, wrote, “Light takes the tree; but who can tell us how?” This question of “how?” is really quite wonderful, as it points to not only the transitory nature of our life but also to its ultimate unknowability. Is this really what we think it is? Encouragingly, he later writes, “So take the lively air,/ And, lovely, learn by going where to go.”

Yes, spring is here, and time does fly, and gundy ranunculus, and I – all of us together
