Reflecting back as the first quarter of the year 2021 has gone by, I feel speechless. What a whirlwind of changes have come as the harsh, cold winter has at last said it’s final goodbye.

Do I leap over the stump? Do I find a way to walk around it? Do I turn back and head back home? Do I sit and cry for help?

I’ll let you determine the outcome.

As life should have it, there’s always a little low with each high isn’t there? And a high followed by the low?

I suppose the unpredictable Spring weather of Nebraska has a way at humbling its citizens and forcing us to this realization.

And so we tell ourselves to “set our intentions” for the day. For me, it’s a fresh cup of coffee, or rather an entire pot. I breathe in. I breathe out. What will I accomplish today?

I watch the sunrise and take a moment to notice the unique color it brings each day. I find a place in my home studio to get comfortable. I begin a morning routine of yoga practice and exercise. I check my emails & review the tasks I set out for myself. I work. I scroll through a few apps. And go about my day.

And yet, no matter how much effort I put forth into preparing and mapping out my day, life finds a way to throw a curveball.

I tell myself I’ll reduce my screen time and then I hear a buzz. And another buzz. Your brain becomes so overloaded with information every day, that it quite literally cannot absorb all those colors, noises, and facts, so it filters them based on your belief system.

Fascinating huh?

Anyways, it’s noon and where has the day gone? Did I accomplish what I set out to do?

The fresh spring air and warm weather calls for an adventure. And so I strap out a good pair of hiking boots & set out for some find a new jump in my step. But as fate would have it, I stumble across a large stump in the middle of my path.

But rather than accepting the defeat, I’m learning to accept these challenges as a welcoming invitation and opportunity to pause and reflect on life.

But regardless of life’s pure determination to wipe all of our set intentions right off our trail, I set forth on my journey again,m and dance with the rhythm.

Fall down seven times, stand up eight & give it a courtesy.

To approach a new beginning with purpose, is to let it become your compass.

As I continue to place effort into making additional space for what restores my energy, I find myself slowing down more. Taking pride in the little things.

A deep spring clean of the home. Eucalyptus and pompous grass to awaken the room. The delicate scent of lemon & sweet orange diffusing. Smudging the energy of every nook.

No matter how good we are at taking care of ourselves, we tend to soak up negative energy and moods like a sponge. As we begin to welcome this new season, I invite you to find light in your space.

Create your mantra. Man means “mind” and tra means “to transcend. How can you transcend your mind?

Let go of the grudges. Cull your clutter. Reduce the time you spend reading current events. Be mindful of gossip & complaining. Opt out of the moody playlists, for refreshing tracks instead. Renew your spirit. Renew your space.

Renew your energy.

Renew you.

DEAR RODEO: A PERSPECTIVE FROM A RODEO MOM How the Pandemic Shifted the Lives of Rodeo Families & How We're Going to Overcome the Challenges

Written By Dalene Valdez For many families living life on the rodeo road, the recent pandemic has greatly impacted the way we live. For my family, we spend our time traveling to rodeos at least ten out of twelve months of the year. In between work and school activities, we're usually off to a rodeo or roping almost every weekend, during the months of January to October.

However, 2020 halted most of the rodeo season.

This was truly difficult for our family and so many others. When something consumes your lives so significantly, and then all of a sudden the world shuts down, it affects you. How do you go from doing this 85% of the time, to not at all? Life as you once know it, is no longer the same. You're so used to competing, traveling and seeing your rodeo family, that when the opportunity to do so just isn't there, you lose yourself and your sense of community in a way.

You no longer were packing up the horse trailer for the weekend. Instead you felt yourself wondering what to do next or asking yourself if we'd ever get back to "normal". It's almost as if those Gold Buckle Dreams came to a screeching halt.

RODEO IS A SENSE OF COMMUNITY It's almost as if we lost that in a way.

KEEP CHASING THOSE GOLD BUCKLE DREAMS MAY THE DRIVE ONLY GROW STRONGER This year was supposed to be a rather big season for our little cow kids. My son competes in nearly every timed event you could think of, from Team Roping to Pole Bending. You name it, he does it, and it's been that way since after he could walk. He made his debut in the Rodeo Arena back in 2014, when he was only 3 years old, mutton busting. From then on, it was a pure love of the sport. We entered him up in almost every event because we wanted him to gain horsemanship and confidence in the arena.

(It's scary as hell in that big pen with so many people watching you, so it is important.) Now here we are almost 7 years later, and he is what we call "a hand".

Nearly every rodeo we go to he brings home day money or a new title, as we like to call it.

In fact, he brought home his first All Around Cowboy Title in his division at only 8 years old back in 2019, right before the pandemic shook our entire world.

As for my little girl, she was set to make her first appearance in the Rodeo Arena in April of 2020. She was just as excited to ride her pony in that pen, as ever before. Watching her brother, has truly made her excited to compete. Unfortunately, that just didn't happen. It almost felt like she was robbed of it in a way.

Even though, now we continue to realize everything is in God's timing, not our own.

We never stopped working in the practice pen. In fact, we kept pushing, and striving for what we wanted. As rodeos continued to be cancelled, the drive for the Gold Buckle only continued to grow stronger and stronger in my little ones, and in us as parents and competitors in the arena as well. "We're coming in hot in 2021", as we like to say.

One thing that I think everyone can relate to is the desire for things to get better, and for us to come back stronger than ever before.

As we start the 2021 Rodeo season, we can't help but be grateful for the everything we have. If we can come out of this pandemic with something, let it be with a grateful heart. I've learned to appreciate both the good and the bad, No matter how big or how small, be thankful for everything. We as a community, as a country, will overcome the challenges set forth by 2020, and will "come in hot" in 2021. Achieving all that we can dream up and more. To all my Rodeo Family, may your drive continue to grow as you chase those Gold Buckle Dreams. We've got this! God's got this!

What did you guys do when you had to bring in the calves? Where did you keep them and what were your concerns for the cattle that were outside.

My husband recalled seeing the temperature at 1 degree. I remember letting the dogs out and seeing it around 7. But for the South, that’s just unheard of.

Oh gosh, we can only imagine. I think the temperatures here in Nebraska reached -27 at one point. It was just crazy. What was your main concern in that case?

Our main concern was our horses, since they’ve never experienced something like that. So we kept them in the barn with blankets. Of course our water froze and we had to carry out buckets. We were pretty worried the pipes burst but luckily it didn’t. So we just kept hauling out buckest of water to fill the trough and break the ice since it kept on freezing.

We had it so much better than others. Some of our neighbors’ cattle walked through a frozen pond, only for the ice to break on them. Their cattle ended up drowning so we went out to help them.

When you first heard about the storm and the extreme temperatures, what did you guys have going through your mind? Did you and your husband feel you had time to prepare?

Our first thought was “Yeah, that’s not going to happen!” This is Tennessee.

Once it hit we knew we would have to haul water and be prepared for the pipes to burst. And keeping plenty of hay on hand since that’s what keeps our animals warm through the winter. Our hay is kept at a separate location so we have to go there, bring it into the barn and just keep on top of making sure there is plenty. One of the sliding doors windows had broken, so we had to board that up to make sure the wind wouldn’t get through.

I really feel humble talking about this, especially in Texas knowing they had it so much worse than us. God blessed up with getting us through it. It’s our livelihood.

My first thought was “Yeah that’s not gonna happen.

This is Tennesse.”

With what you have explained about Texas being worse, and your neighbors losing their livestock, was there ever a turning point where you realized that this realy is happening and it caused you to switch up some gears on what you needed to do?

My husband deals with a lot of farmers, he’s an agronomist. So he sells seeds and chemicals to the farmers who not only grow crops but have cattle too. He was mainly the one that would go help others' families. So much crazy has happened with Covid and we just really felt like God was really trying to us. It was very scary for sure. We’ve never experienced something like that. And we really didn’t know how much snow we were going to get.

Then all of a sudden it would be another 1-2 inches the next day. Our trucks weren’t running so some people couldn’t go get food. We took food to some of our neighbors sinec they couldn’t get out in it.

You know, for us Nebraskans we are so used to our snow trucks going out to put salt on the road. Who on earth would think Tennessee and Texas would be equipped to have snow plows.

Shoot, I think the first time I saw a snow plow in my life was during this.

So let's get to know Bri. Hey girl, thanks so much for doing this! So tell me a little bit about you.

So I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada.

No way! I didn’t even know this…

Yeah, so I actually moved to Oklahoma when I was 8 years old.

Awesome.

I began getting into rodeos when I was about 13 years old but really started to go to them when I was about 18 years old. That’s when I really started to get into the western world. Mostly, it started because I was dating a guy who was a farmer & rancher. I hate to say how it started because of a guy, but it really was a llarge influence in my life into the western fashion industry. Plus I also had a boutique.

I totally get it. What was the name of your boutique?

Broken Horn Trading Co. What happened with the boutique?

I realize the boutique life wasn’t really for me. I had some people who actually modelled for me, but I realized they weren’t really pushing the brand like I wanted to. So eventually I just began to model myself. Last May I had an opportunity to go model in Las Vegas with Alicia Kay, Tiffany and Megan. It was seriously the best trip of my life and I met my best friends there! After doing that shoot, I really realized that’s what I want to do. Even if it’s just for fun, I just knew that this was a fun hobby I could do.

I love dressing up. I love western fashion and rodeo fashion. I just realized I could be more. It was way out of my comfort zone.

I’m super shy. Before I was not so open to get to know people. I went out on a whim!

I love it. They are such good people.

Yeah totally.

So tell us, what draws you to western fashion?

There isn’t really anything specific, but I really love how you can make it your own. You don’t have to be a barrel racer or a rodeo queen. It’s just something that you love. That’s what western fashion is for me. Personally, I just love the way of life and….

What is a goal you have this year?

What is a goal you have this year?

Okay so this is a quote from Kourtney Kardashion and it’s “just living my life.”

What is one thing you would tell someone wanting to get into western fashion?

Be yourself, but also, just do it. Don’t be afraid of what other people think. Obviously I didn’t grow up in a rodeo, or on a farm. But it’s the life that I pursue. If you want to get into western fashion or rodeo world.

How do you go about styling an outfit? Like, how does it start for you?

I come with one piece. It might be one piece, one staple item and I go from there. It might be a t-shirt and then I put it all together from there. Then whatever jeans or leggings or whatever unique piece I want to throw with it.

That’s where it starts.

I totally remember watching you do that!

Yes, you have one key item that is your staple and change it up. There’s no outfit repeating Do you ever repeat your outfit? Or do you feel like you keep changing it up somehow?

Not often, I try to change it up when I can.

Maybe a hat one time or not the next. That sort of small change.

When I was younger and wanted to go out on the weekends, I always went out and bought a new outfit. Do you feel like you do that? Or are you more likely to reinvent your wardrobe for a different occasion?

Well I for sure have an online shopping addiction. I do tend to buy a new staple piece to change my outfit. But for the most part that I wear is something I already had.

When I think of staples, I think of neutrals. A basic white tee. A neutral tank top bodysuit.

And then I search for the unique items that really draw me in. Really unique pieces come with a higher price tag so I try to find a couple low key pieces to start with first.

Absolutely, me too.

“I need to detox my life.”

Have you ever found yourself repeating this message? Generally it’s phrase that finds us when we’ve sunk down into our misery far enough, with layer upon layer of toxic habits, people, patterns and clutter all above the surface.

As a Dietetics graduate, I would first like to remind you that your body is already equipped with everything it needs to detoxify and cleanse itself. And if you were to ask anyone in the profession, they would admittedly tell you just the same.

I know, it’s so enticing to see a “5 day-detox” to feel better quick when you’re in the desperate mood for change. But if you’re only investing into sugary juice cleanses, you’re body is likely missing out on the fiber it needs.

So let me explain the basics.

The best way to support your body’s already built in functions, is to provide it what it needs. Hydrating properly, providing your body with nutrients from whole food sources, managing stress levels, exercising regularly, resting and creating healthy sleeping patterns, practicing deep breathing exercises or incorporating mediation/yoga into your routine, and using natural products to take care of your skin.

All we do is support our bodies in doing what it already does.

Okay, back to the gritty. So how does your body detox?

1. Our kidneys have one really big role, which is to filter out waste and toxins from our body. They also keep us in balance. By body loves water so much! And will retain electrolytes from sodium when we need.

2. The digestive system is as equally important as digesting the foods we need, as delivering nutrients into the bloodstream.

When we have a proper amount of fiber in our body, we are able to eliminate the substances that cause our bodies harm (chemicals, excess hormones, heavy metals).

3. Our skin protects us from viruses, chemical toxins and bacteria’s. Establishing a natural skincare routine is a great way in reducing the amount of chemical toxins that enter your body.

4. Just like the digestive system, our immune system is built to eliminate foreign substances from our bodies. The immune system consists of blood, the lymphatic system and cells which are vital for us. Providing our bodies with the nutrients we need from our diet will ultimately help the immune system function at its highest.

5. The liver will help metabolize nutrients and eliminate harmful chemicals, alcohol, and drugs. But it also plays a role in carbohydrate metabolism. Be sure to give it a break once in a while and add food sources that are full of antioxidants!

A couple tips to begin spring cleaning.

1. Begin with one room - even just a room per day.

Begin in the Least-Used Room First.

2. If it takes less than 2 minutes to clean, do it now instead of waiting until later.

3. Start with the Thing you Hate Most to Clean.

Work from top-down & corners first.

4. Move furniture & leave no surface left behind.

Picture frames, knick knacks, you name it.

5. Minimize. Less stuff equals less stuff to clean.

6. Have a closet full? Wait a day before trash day then head in. Purchase some shelf organizers & labels in advance. Make four separate piles. I like to image myself like Carrie Bradshaw going through her closet. Trash, Goodwill, Poshmark, Keep.

7. Let go of the idea of “perfectionism.” Will my Mom come through and find something I could probably fix? Yes. Will she do it herself anyways? Absolutely. And I’ll pour a glass of wine and let her.

8. I know you think you need the toaster on the counter top, but do you actually use it everyday? If not, find a good storage place in your cupboards. Lighten up the clutter on your kitchen counters.

9. Divide your tasks. Wash the baseboards & walls.

Clean the windows & lights. Let your honey take care of the garage. Don’t forget to give your kids a list of chores. Make it an event. All chores done on Saturday before fun.

10. Vacuum your way out of the room.

What is a Modern Western Woman

From mommas of the future rodeo generation to the ladies leading the west by adding their own expertise to the agricultural business side of things, a Modern Western Woman can manifest into several interpretations .

If you ask the older generations this question, they may respond with a silent stare. Some might think “Western Lifestyle”, is a one-way vision. Reimagining the lifestyle in a way the younger generation perceives these terms is difficult for part. I know for a fact it is for my blood line.

I come from the Schertz Farms bloodline. A long line of generational harvest farmers and cattle ranchers. When I use the terms “Ranchy” and “Punchy,” I get looks of question and confusion.

When you ask members of the western community these days this question, you’ll get a variety of answers.

“Modern Western” is just one of many slangs my generation and younger generations like to use. It creates a space for the ones who have the call of the wild, passion for the industry, flair for the fashions and many other talents plus loves of the rural ways.

“A woman who represents the western lifestyle with style, morals, elegance and grit,” as spoken by Lauren Vinson, cowboy wife and momma.

A ‘Modern Western Woman’ is just that.

She’s a lady that has class, can handle a buck, puts her beliefs in the Lord, and provides the table with many aspects of the western ways. She chases her passions and is never afraid to be bold.

When focusing on fashion, I would say a lady who describes herself with these terms is a lady that has some daringness to her style. In some way, she will add the element of surprise to her look and outfit. She is brave with design and unique with her efforts to combine pieces of the west and modern industries.

Modern Western is more than just two adjectives put together to create a buzz.

It’s a lifestyle.

YAs Marijka Hunsaker, western fashion mogul, says, “A modern western woman is someone who doesn’t necessarily fit the status quo of traditional western, but one that has found a place in the western world and is educating others around her about the industry in her own way!”

If you want to center your thoughts with another graceful lady, you might take the words of Hannah Hogner more to heart.

“A modern western woman these days, is so many

things. We all come from different walks of life. You have your ranchers, farmers, rodeo girls, and just everyday cowgirls. We are a wide variety who can rock a pair of cowboy boots to get the job done or rock a pair of heels for a fun girl’s night! We are not scared to get our hands dirty and if need be, wear the heels to do it. A modern western woman is adaptable to her surroundings, a woman with determination and has a never give up attitude. Her faith, family, and her friends are what drive her to be the best woman she can be. That to me, is a modern western woman.”

The fact of the matter is, we ‘Modern Western Women’, are the new Belle Starr’s of this lifetime. Minus the crime, in some way, we all embody her essence of the 1800’s.

BUT THERE IS A SOUL SISTER THAT RISES ABOVE THE REST

I traverse several social groups and I meet many phenomenal women. I love to befriend women who are living in their God-given purpose and who live their lives out loud. Usually, I end up having a collection of strong women who become soul-sisters. Their spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical support is one I rely upon.

But, there is a soul-sister that rises above all the rest. They are cowgirl best friends. These women have wizened faces from too many hours in the sun, calloused hands from maintaining their property, dirt under the finger nails from a quick, yet loving scratching session with their trusty steed, and hearts that are deep, yet scarred from too many years of wearing it on their sleeves.

These cowgirl best friends are full of grit. They are the ones you can call at 2am (and they will pick up because God has already woken them up) to haul out horses from a nearby property that had a barn fire that resulted in total devastation.

They are the ones you call to come save you and your animals when you are broken down in the middle of the road.

Their accompanying trucks are gritty enough to tow your rig and trailer full of horses up the steep canyon grade to safety.

They are the ones you call at 9:45pm to see if they have a heat lamp to keep the baby lamb that you are desperately trying to save warm. They offer to be right there because, “It’s right out in the shed.”

They are women who know the importance of a good, working tractor because fox tails are straight from the devil.

They cook nourishing meals that would beat 5-star chefs.

The veggies are from the garden and the secret ingredient is always love.

The veggies are from the garden and the secret ingredient is always love. They are the ones willing to spend hours yelling ‘Turn the wheel! No, the other way!’ as you learn how to back up your rig and new-to-you living quarters trailer for your Class A test.

These cowgirl best friends are the embodiment of grace.

These women are the village you choose to raise your child with due to their standards and strength of character. You have sat on a patio enjoying a cup of coffee and deep belly laughs while watching the young cowgirls play around in the arena with their horses who would do anything for ‘their’ girl. They are the women who cheer on each other’s daughters as they compete against one another in horse shows, livestock jackpots, and public speaking contests. If one family forgot something essential, the daughter is able to run to the next cowgirl best friend who probably has it in 3 different colors. These cowgirl best friends are the ones you sit in the stands with at the local rodeos as the girls run sponsor flags. The cowgirl best friends pray for and cheer on each other’s daughter at the barrel race as of she were her own. Because cowgirl best friends are always there, they have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. Yet, they extend grace and still love you and your teenage daughter.

Strong female friendships are gifts from God, but cowgirl best friendships are the closest physical representation of God’s unconditional love on the planet. I am blessed beyond measure by my cowgirl best friends and I would not be the woman I am without their grit and grace.
