The evening of January 26th an unknown assailant walked up to a young man at Avalon Village and opened fire, killing the son of one of Highland Park’s most ardent supporters. Shamayim “Mama Shu” Harris’ 21 year old son, Chinleyu (Chin-Yay-Loo) passed away in a hospital that same night. The community grieves over the senseless loss and sends its prayers and love to Shu. Avalon Village itself was born out of the loss of her 2 year old child, Jakobi to a hit and run driver. The Warrior princess resilience that Shu displayed after that loss and the conviction of transforming Avalon street from blight to beauty was a heavy enough burden for a mother to bear. To Lose a second son on the same street is unconscionable. All of us, the city of Highland Park, Her friends, supporters, family and loved ones feel this pain and pray for the well being of Shu. Shamayim. The woman, mother, sister and friend to countless. A GoFundMe has been set up to pay for funeral expenses and to add additional security to Avalon Village. If you are able to support, Please do and in the meantime send positive thoughts to the woman we call, “Mama Shu”. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-secure-avalon-village?utm_ source=fb_copy_link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=p_cp%20 share-sheet&fbclid=IwAR1Sqmol4OtFh83p_9IrQasnuWgWBd5SUPw5EA9J6GkPqdPAuK7tVKgASPA

An organization you will be hearing more about in Highland Park is the Equitable Internet Initiative (EII), A division of the Allied Media Projects. The Project Manager in Highland Park is your neighbor, Sheila Dudley. This organization brings internet access to homes that lack internet access. Unless your head has been buried underground, it is common knowledge that all homes can’t afford internet service. Regardless of this lack of access, people are asked to “use the internet” to get necessary essential services. The digital divide was brought front and center when schools decided to teach virtually. The Nation pretended to be shocked. The pretense was unbelievable! The digital divide was no shock to organizers from The Equitable Internet Initiative. Since 2015, EII has been demystifying wireless internet, educating and training teams of residents, which they refer to as their Digital Stewards, to build and to maintain internet infrastructure for underserved neighborhoods. The EII is a collaboration with the Detroit Community Technology Project and 3 organizations in Detroit. The organizations are Grace in Action, the Church of the Messiah, and the North End Woodward Community Coalition. The project has expanded into Highland Park. One very happy long-time Highland Park resident and senior citizen is Margaret Lewis. Ms. Lewis is extremely satisfied with her internet installation provided by EII. She praises the professional service, as well as, the follow-up training she continues to receive by the organization. The Equitable Internet Initiative is looking to train more residents to become part of their team of Digital Stewards. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn to build and maintain a neighborhood internet infrastructure. EII is looking to hire Highland Park residents. THE DREAM CONTINUES

In celebrating Martin Luther King, we must remember that Dr King was a freedom fighter for human rights. It is only fitting that we acknowledge the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, an organization which is continuing the work of Dr Martin Luther King. “Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others called for a “revolution of values” in America. They invited people who had been divided to stand together against the “triplets of evil”—militarism, racism, and economic injustice—to insist that people need not die from poverty in the richest nation ever to exist. They sought to build a broad, fusion coalition that would audit America. Together, they would demand an accounting of promissory notes that had been returned marked “insufficient funds.” Today that effort is still incomplete. “(from the poor people’s campaign website) Dr. King and the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign declared that “silence was betrayal”. In this period of history, the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is honoring Dr King’s legacy by connecting with communities across the nation learning from struggles being wages, gathered testimonies from hundred of poor people, and has developed a moral agenda based on these struggles being waged across the country for fundamental rights. A moral agenda which continues the fight against systemic

racism. There are fewer voting rights now than when the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act were passed. A moral agenda which continues the fight against poverty and inequality. There are more than 140 million people who are poor or low-income in the United State today. A moral agenda which continues to fight against ecological devastation. There are more than 13.8 million U.S. households that cannot afford water. A moral agenda which continues the fight against the war economy and militarism. 53 cents of every federal discretionary dollar go to military spending and only 15 cents is spent on anti-poverty programs. A moral agenda which continues to fight for national morality. Fight poverty not the poor! Thousands of people are dying from anti-poor policies, “while an extremist religious and Christian nationalist agenda deliberately diverts attention from the key issues and challenges facing the majority of Americans.” Let’s celebrate by continuing moving the struggle forward together, not one step back
