THE GOOD NEIGHBORS

t’s great to have good neighbors. MauriceTurner and his partner, Blake Milnes, are renovating a home on Eason Street. The head of our block club, Dorothy Eaddy welcomed them to the neighborhood. They immediately started showing they were truly good neighbors.

Dorothy has always worked hard beautifying her home by planting lots of flowers. Her work doesn’t stop there. She also makes sure the public island on Eason is clean, mowed and has plants.

Over the years, neighbors have contributed with donations for the island’s upkeep, but no one has worked harder to attend to the island than Dorothy. Well, then along came Maurice! He said I love landscaping and immediately started helping with the work and design for additional plants. Blake joined in and worked hard too.

Do you think good deeds stopped there? No. I complained that my breakfast room needed to be painted. Who volunteered and would not take no for an answer? Maurice.

The block club showed our appreciation for our neighbors making our public space lovely by taking Maurice to dinner (pre-pandemic). Unfortunately, Blake couldn’t be there. Besides all of their good work, what makes it even more special is that they don't live within the “official” border of our block club, Eason 2-3 Blog about renovations- www.RehabHighlandPark.com Written by Gracie Wooten

s a member of Soulardarity and the Highland Park Covid-19 Response team, Akanke Hill is determined to help the community stay safe. She thought about how to contribute and make a difference.

Akanke decided that as a seamstress, she could make face masks and gowns for essential workers and others who were not first in line to receive protective equipment.

She made phone calls to neighbors she knew with sewing machines, as well as, quilting groups. She worked with a response team to get orders from the senior buildings, nursing homes, treatment facilities, jails, and places that feed the needy and homeless.

Akanke then went to work sewing and collecting- and distributing and distributing through the Highland Park Community Crisis Coalition (HPC3). The work started in March and continues today. Her company Kuumba Quilts is at the front lines of responding to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

When asked how long she would be involved in making masks and gowns, Akanke said, “as long as the pandemic exists.”
