By Susie Robb

When you’re overwhelmed with a sterile space or a daunting open concept floor plan, you can solve your design dilemmas with the right rug. That’s the beauty of rugs; they add color, texture, and warmth to a room. Rugs ground a space and help designate room transitions. They can neutralize a room or add pops of colors. Their versatility and artistry make them one of my very favorite design elements as an interior decorator. But with that solution comes another problem. How do you choose the right rug? There’s so much to consider, but I’d like to give you one very important word in choosing the right rug and that is "scale." The most common mistake I see in rug selections is size. If rugs were a dress that you were ordering online, I would tell you to "size up." Most of the homes I enter have chosen a rug that is too small for the space. Make the following considerations to ensure you’ve picked the perfect sized rug.

12 | moderntexasliving.com

living room To designate your living area in an open concept home, utilize the rug. I like clients to purchase rugs that are large enough for appropriate furniture placement. You are creating little conversation areas with sofas and chairs, and at least part of every seat should be on the rug. This means you can choose to put the whole sofa on the rug or just the front two legs. Layout the furniture in your room and then measure the perimeter to see what size rug you need to be aiming for. Any piece of furniture that could hold a drink must choose a side. This means on or off the rug completely. Think about it, you don’t want a table to wobble, therefore, coffee tables go all the way on a rug and end/side tables are usually set off the rug.

dining room Rectangular rugs will accomodate all table shapes if you get one large enough. The most important thing to consider is the dining chairs. When a chair is pulled out from the table, you don’t want a guest half on and half off the carpet. Be sure you allow at least 2’ around the perimeter of the table to avoid this problem. Dining rooms are where I pay special attention to geometry. I consider the furniture shapes and want to be sure I haven’t used too many rectangles or too many circles. So a rectangle table and rectangular buffet, may need an oval rug to break up the shapes.

bedroom Rugs under a king or queen bed should have at least two feet of rug on each side of the bed and at the foot. This usually means that at least half of the bed is on top of the rug. However, a really fun trick, if you can't make a large rug work, is to place two runners on either side of the bed. This gives the same illusion of a large rug. Kids’ rooms can utilize a rug as a play mat and in that case, the rug doesn’t have to fit under the bed, but can float in the middle of the room. I really enjoy layering a soft faux fur on top of a bold geometric rug for children.

tips to simplify your search Layering. If you’ve fallen in love with a rug that’s too small, not to fret. Consider layering a larger rug underneath. Color. Remember that a rug can bring in color or it can neutralize a bright palette. You can start with the rug first to establish your scheme, or you can choose at the end to tie everything together. Details. If you have a rug with fringe, be sure and brush the ends for a sharp, clean look and shake the rug outside once a season to keep it looking fresh. You can also cut the fringe to your desired length!

STYLING FAUX FLOWERS By Emily Barlow @handmadefarmhouse

D

o you want to know my secret for keeping flowers looking bright and beautiful so they can be included in your home decor? The answer is simple… BUY FAUX! Trust me, I enjoy fresh flowers in my home as much as anyone! Sadly, it’s not always practical for me to purchase a bundle of blooms week after week to have on display.

TIPS:

1

Faux flowers are made to look and even feel more and more realistic than ever before. Forget about the old cheesy looking baskets of dusty red roses on grandma’s side table (no offense granny!).

2

Real flowers are not perfect and they are not all the same. Faux flowers are uniform. Just be sure to fluff the petals and spread their leaves after you buy them.

3 4

Hide the very bottom of the stems so that it’s less noticeable that they’re faux.

DO

You can find beautiful faux flowers at Joann Fabric, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and online! These particular tulips come in many colors and they have a very realistic texture!

D O N’T

Displaying the flowers close together or standing straight up doesn’t help them look real. They all look the same. Bending some of the stems a bit and staggering the heights helps make them look more realistic.

16 | moderntexasliving.com

Stagger heights! Bouquets of real flowers always have different heights. It adds visual interest and helps each one stand out.

5

Last of all, be sure to bend some stems. One thing I adore about tulips is that they fall gracefully to the side of the pitcher or vase they’re displayed in. They don’t all stand up perfectly straight.

Faux flowers are reusable. Keep them for Spring table displays, baby or bridal showers, birthday parties and summer BBQ’s! If you love to entertain like I do, you’ll find a use for them over and over. I hope you feel inspired to give faux flowers a try, and discover the many ways you can get creative and save money by using them.

PILLOW + SIDE TABLE Styling Guide

By Brooke Morales @blindseyj

Pillow Styling Many of us are self-proclaimed "pillow hoarders." Often we have too many for our own good. They are such a great way to refresh any space, and I switch them up often in our home. The space I most frequently switch up pillows in is our master bedroom. There’s something about perfectly styled pillows that make any bedroom – or any space for that matter – feel extra cozy! Here are a few simple tips to make your pillow styling look incredible.

SIZE MATTERS Consider the size of your bed (or sofa, or chair) when selecting your throw pillows. Pillows that are too big for your bed will make it look unbalanced, while pillows that are too small will leave your space looking bare.

THE ARRANGEMENT Pillow gatherings look best when they have a layered look. This can be achieved by using pillows of different sizes. There’s definitely no wrong way to arrange your pillows, but I generally achieve a layered look in our bedroom by going by one of the two combos below. For reference, these looks are styled on a California king size bed. 2–28” x 36” Large Pillows (Back) 2–20” Neutral/Textured Pillows (Middle) 1–18” Solid/Textured Pillow (Middle) 1–14” x 30” Patterned/Tasseled Lumbar (Front) OR 3–26” x 26” Euro Pillows (Back) 2–22” Patterned/Textured Pillows (Middle) 2–18” Solid Textured Pillow (Middle) 1–14” x 30” Patterned/Tasseled Lumbar (Front)

MIX IT UP There are several different ways to match throw pillows, but, just to be clear, your pillows do not have to match. A well-coordinated selection of pillows, rather than perfectly matched pillows, will give your room a polished look. I usually pick two different sets of patterned or textured pillows, another textured pillow (or throw blanket), and a solid colored pillow to pull everything together. If you keep your colors

and patterns cohesive, you can get a little more creative with touch and feel. Incorporating velvets, faux fur, and tasseled accents can add warmth to your space. Mixing up the shapes and sizes of your pillows is also another great way to add interest to your pillow arrangement.

IT’S WHAT'S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS When selecting your pillows (or pillow covers) consider the size and material of the fill. I highly recommend a feather down fill because it holds its shape better than foam or polyester. While polyester or foam fills are generally a less expensive option, feather down fills will give your space a much more luxurious feel – not to mention they are so much more cozy. Rest assured, there is an alternative down option if feathers aren’t for you. Here’s a tip: be sure to get a fill size 2” larger than your actual pillow cover. For example, if your pillow cover is 18” you will need an insert that is 20”. This will transform the look of your pillows and will help you achieve perfectly karate chopped pillows if you desire. Clearly, it’s my jam! Sources: Pillows and throw blanket seen here can be found at pompomathome.com or follow @pompomathome on Instagram. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 19

Side Table Styling While pillows add all the cozy feels to your bedroom, your bedside table will complete your space and add a functional yet stylish focal point to your room. All you really need is a few key elements to achieve this. Be sure to use objects that vary in height, as this will help create a balanced focal point.

LIGHTING First things first: choose a lamp that is right for your side table itself. Be sure to choose one that allows enough space for other key items without looking cluttered. If space is limited, a wall sconce is another great lighting option. Be sure to choose a warm bulb to create a gentle ambiance to calm your senses before heading off to sleepy land.

FUNCTIONALITY/STORAGE A storage basket (if your bedside table has a bottom shelf) is a great way to add functional storage for things like throw blankets, books, chargers, iPads, etc. A bottom shelf is a great way to hide clutter and cords with ease and style. Additionally, a pretty tray or decorative bowl is great for adding a personal yet functional touch to your side table. This can also serve as a catch for all things such as chapstick, glasses, or jewelry.

PERSONALLY SPEAKING . . . While bedside tables are meant to be practical, a framed photo or a sentimental piece can be a nice touch. Plus, it’s the perfect way to make your side table feel personal to you.

FRESH OR FAUX

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Lamp • Framed Photo or Sentimental Accessory • Decorative Bowl or Tray • Fresh or Faux Florals/Greenery • Books, Candle, Vase (if desired) • Storage basket (if desired)

20 | moderntexasliving.com

Use greenery (or florals) to add an organic touch to your bedside table. While I love fresh flowers, they are too high maintenance for me, so most of the time I stick with faux greenery. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to add warmth and dimension to your space. You don't have to stick to the elements listed above. Each night stand can be styled to fit their own needs: add a vase, your favorite book, or a candle to customize your night stand.

SPRING CLEANING Organizing to Bring Joy By Kristana Doreck

A

s TV organization guru Maire Kondo instills in her clients, your stuff should bring you joy. Below are some easy tips to keeping your space clean. The Swedish-Death method, although it sounds scary, may actually be what you need. This method is simply a huge purge of things that aren’t needed in your home.

Tidy Tip: Help store things on your closet shelf with these labeled cloth bins from the Container Store. They keep the space looking decluttered and everything is labeled by box.

PLAYROOM

Have your kids take out every single toy and sort them into two piles: the ones that they play with and the ones that they don’t. Giving them less options of toys to play with helps them stay less bored and overwhelmed with too many options. Then donate the toys they don’t play with to charity.

CLOSET

Take all of your clothes out of the closet and sort into two piles again: one to donate and one to keep. The donate pile should be bigger than the keep pile. If the clothing item has not been worn in a year, it’s time to let it go.

Tidy Tip: To keep items that didn’t make it to your local charity, purchase some large baskets like these from the Container Store. They are perfect for every room.

KITCHEN/ PANTRY

When looking at the pantry, pull everything out at once and assess what foods you and your family actually eat. If it is expired, throw it away; if it is open and half gone and your family won’t eat it, throw it away. Odds are you will only be keeping the foods you eat on a regular basis and if you know what you have, you won’t over buy at the grocery store. 22 | moderntexasliving.com

Put all the clothes back into the closet by sleeve length and following the ROYGBIV color scheme.

Tidy Tip: For a messy drawer in any room, use drawer organizers. Then everything has a place in the drawer and it won’t get cluttered as easily. Grab these bamboo organizers from The Container Store.

Home Exterior Transformation The Secret of Whitewashing By Randa Carrabba @randacarrabba

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? For our house, we had a crew work for 2.5 days. Keep in mind we washed both the brick and the stone. We did all the exterior of our home, the exterior fireplace, the front steps, and all the stone around the flower beds. It was quite a big job!

WHAT IS THIS TECHNIQUE CALLED? Whitewashing or German Schmear would be the most common terms. A water hose was used to wash the brick and stone, smeared all the wet mortar over it and then used carpet pieces (as well as brooms) to expose a little of the previous brick color that was beneath. This was based on my own personal request because I wanted texture and dimension from the bottom layer color, rather than just a solid wash. HOW FAST DOES IT DRY? I would say it dries within the day. Do not freak out about the color or dimension you see when they first start washing. It dries lighter and the color underneath shows through more as it continues to dry. Just like paint, you’ve got to let it dry before you see the final outcome.

26 | moderntexasliving.com

DID WE ALSO WASH THE EXTERIOR STONE? Yes! By using the same method/technique as the brick. We did have the front steps and the stone around the flower beds pressure washed first before we did the brick mortar wash on top!

How to Style Artificial Branches By Megan Callahan with @Afloral

T

his season, bring the outside in with no-maintenance fake branches and greenery. Whether you’re styling a simple side table or an over-the-top mantlepiece, faux branches and greenery elevate your home decor effortlessly– without the worry of allergies or upkeep. For a look that lasts, design with these tips in mind!

FIND THE RIGHT VASE Styling branches is simple with the right vase, which determines the size and shape of each design. To add height, stems should stand between 1/2 to 2/3 the height of your vessel. To add depth, stems should branch out twice the width of your container. Give your creation a unique touch with a vase that speaks to you! Look for a complimenting pop of color or a classic ceramic find you’ll use over and over.

BEND, TRIM, AND FLUFF For the most realistic look, separate branches, leaves, and flower blossoms so each stem flows organically. To create an array of height and texture, trim or bend the length of each stem. Finally, fluff all leaves and flowers to give your design a tousled, yet natural vibe.

KEEP IT SIMPLE For a bold yet simple look, fill your container with a bundle of just one type of faux stem. Stagger branch heights to create dimension and texture. If you’re working with an opaque vase, bend the end of your stems instead of trimming so you can reuse later at different heights.

JUST ADD WATER If styling with a clear vase, add water to create the impression your stems are fresh. Acrylic water is also an excellent option for a more permanent look.

PLAY WITH TEXTURE AND COLOR

Photos by @nest.out.west 30 | moderntexasliving.com

The best part of designing with faux branches is that you can repurpose and recreate! Give your design a pop of color with lemon or orange fake fruit branches. Simply add a sprig or two of greenery or style alone. For more dimension, add faux flowering branches like cherry blossom or magnolia.

We have literally watched children grow up by framing their photos brought in by moms, dads, grandparents, and even great-grandparents. We are blessed that Studio Gallery continues to grow and expand to fill the needs of our clients. Lavender Ice Cream INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup Whole Milk • 1 tsp Dried Lavender • Purple Food Coloring • 1 Earl Grey Tea Bag • 1 tsp Vanilla Bean Paste or Vanilla Extract • 2 cups Heavy Cream, cold • 14 oz Can of Sweetened Condensed Milk INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add whole milk to a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer then remove from the heat. Divide the milk equally into two separate bowls. Add lavender & purple food coloring to one bowl, and the Earl Grey tea bag & vanilla to the other bowl. Place plastic wrap over the surface of each bowl (to ensure a skin doesn’t form) and place both bowls into the fridge to cool completely – about 2-3 hours. When cool, remove the tea bag from the one, and strain the lavender out from the other. 2. Add heavy cream to a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Beat until stiff peaks have formed, then carefully fold in the sweetened condensed milk. 3. Equally divide the sweetened whipped cream into 2 separate bowls, then pour the lavender infused milk into one bowl, and the Earl Grey infused milk into the other. Carefully fold each of these infused milks into the whip cream, then pour each of the mixtures into a loaf pan. Using a knife, swirl the two mixtures together to achieve that marbled look. 4. Cover and place into the freezer to firm up for at least 6 hours. Recipe by Amie MacGregor @food.duchess MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 45

Remove 1/3 of mixture into a separate bowl, and add in chopped rosemary. 2. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a large heavy skillet that is oven-safe. Fruit-Filled

HANDMADE PIES Recipe and images by Emily Barlow @handmade.farmhouse

S

urprise someone you love with these simple and delicious fruit-filled hand pies! This pie dough recipe will make about 10 hand pies if you use a 3 1/2” round cutter.

INGREDIENTS • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup Crisco shortening • 1 teaspoon salt • 8-9 tablespoons ice water • 1 egg white beaten • 1 can fruit pie filling (whatever flavor you love!). A 21oz can be double the amount of filling you need, so make 2 batches of dough if you’d like to use it all. INSTRUCTIONS In a medium mixing bowl cut together flour, shortening and salt with a pastry knife or fork until mixture forms pea-sized clumps. Add in 8-9 tablespoons of ice water, and stir together until mixture forms a loose ball. If your dough is dry, you can add another tablespoon of water. Dump dough onto a lightly floured counter top (it’s okay if it’s loose and not all mixed yet!) and knead slightly until mixture comes together. Roll out dough to a 1/2-1/4" depending on how thick you want your crust to be, and use a 3.5 inch round cookie cutter or drinking glass to cut circles for the pies. Brush the outer edges of the dough with egg white, and fill center with a spoonful of desired fruit filling. Be sure to not add too much fruit so you can add the top dough and crimp edges without it spilling out. Place another circle of dough on top. Press down the edges of dough.

Use a fork to crimp around the circle. Slice a vent on top of your pie. Brush with egg wash (one egg white; beaten). Place pies on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or sprayed with cooking spray. Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes or until golden brown. After allowing pies to cool for a few minutes, I love to make a little glaze mixture out of powdered sugar and milk to drizzle over the tops! MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 51

IN GOOD HEALTH

Why Restrictive Diets Don't Work Long Term

R

estrictive diets, or those that cut out a specific food group, seem to be all the rage, such as the Keto diet where carbs are nearly eliminated. While these diets can work in the short term, they will not be beneficial long term. People are better off understanding how foods can affect so much more than their waist size, and now more than ever people should be focusing on nutrient dense foods rather than restricting their diet. Eliminating entire food groups and cutting out the overprocessed “junk food” will often lead to an unexpected calorie deficit, which helps with fat loss at first, but anytime someone reduces calories a drastic amount, their bodies will drop weight, until their metabolism slows down. Once the metabolism has slowed down, a person may try to eliminate more food or reduce their calorie intake even further, but your body will slow down its metabolism by trying to tell you that it actually needs more food than you’re giving it. Further, if a specific food or food group is cut out, eventually that will be what is most desired. Anytime someone is “restricted” from something, that usually only lasts short term. In the long run, restrictive diets lead to burnout. This is why you usually see 30day versions of these types of diets – think Whole 30. Someone can only deprive themselves of their favorite foods or food groups for so long. Think how many people you know that have “restarted the Keto diet” over and over again. Yes, fat and weight loss ultimately comes down to whether or not there is a caloric deficit happening. It comes down to calories in verses calories out. So how does one actually fuel their body with nutrient-dense foods and eat a 2200 calorie + diet that includes a balance of all 3 macronutrients? Strength Training. The more lean muscle mass a body builds, the more calories the body will burn on its own at a resting state. This means the metabolism is revved up,

Thus, long term results and sustainability of your weight, as long as the body is being properly fueled and not limited or restricted. The three macronutrients are proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The human body needs all three. Counting macros allows for food freedom, while not restricting overall calories or any specific foods or food groups (macronutrients). Cutting back on inflammatory foods, processed foods, and refined sugars while still enjoying your favorite treats and eating more than you have in years sounds pretty do-able, right? Indeed it is! I currently consume 2500 calories a day, broken down into 250+ grams of carbs, 150+ grams of protein and less than 80 grams of fats a day. Always consult your doctor or physician first. How to Grow a Container Garden F

By Donna Letler, Co Founder, CEO Gardenuity

alling in love with gardening is easy and usually starts with one successful harvest. Spring is the perfect time to get growing. Whether you are growing for the first time or you are a seasoned gardener, spring brings fresh ideas to your garden. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed when you are trying something for the first time, so here are some things to think about to ensure you enjoy a successful spring garden season. CHOOSE YOUR PALATE Edible or ornamental. Both can perform beautifully in containers GROW PRO or flower beds. Going into your TIP: garden center or going online Attend a fun garden and selecting random plants workshop and can make your spring gardening experience how fun experience challenging. Decide gardening can on a plan, even if it’s loosely be. defined. This will help from feeling overwhelmed.

LOCATION CONTEMPLATION Traditional gardens are great, but there’s something to be said for container gardens – they allow you to grow more in less space, find the perfect spot for sunshine, and customize the soil precisely to the plant’s needs. Plus the soil warms earlier in the spring and you can get planting sooner.

GROW PRO TIP: Container gardening has lots of benefits, especially when planting in Texas where weather can be so unpredictable. Container gardens are not just for apartment dwellers, they can add landscape design to patios, porches, and backyards. We also define containers loosely; we recommend our grow bags but really wooden crates, buckets, etc. can be transformed into planters as long as there is good drainage.

DIRT MATTERS GROW PRO TIP: Not all soils are created equal. If you are refreshing There are different types of last year’s garden, fluff your soils, and matching the right soil as needed. Lighten up nutrients and soil to the plants your soil in your garden bed or you are growing will make a containers by sticking a garden big difference to you and your fork as deeply into the soil plants. Think about what you as possible and wiggle it want to grow; are you starting back and forth. from seed or refreshing last years garden? Think about what you are growing and ask questions about what soil will be best for your crop based on the season, timing and the location of your garden.

“SPRING IS NATURE’S WAY OF SAYING, ‘LET ’S GO’ ”

TIMING TAKES PRACTICE Matching planting times to plants and predicted weather will matter especially while your young plants are getting comfortable in their new home. One of the beauties of container gardening is your gardens become mobile, and when bad weather is coming your way you can move your garden to a protected area.

ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE Whether you are planting a cut and come again garden of leafy greens, a cocktail garden of fresh herbs, or a garden full of taco toppings, it is important to enjoy the journey. The joy of being able to say “I grew that” is thrilling, and to reap all the gifts a garden provides, you need to just get growing. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 61

6 WAYS TO GET OUT OF A RUT T By Jesse Coulter @jessecoulter

here are times in life when we get stuck. Stuck in our attitude, mindset, and actions. There are many factors that come into play....stress, grief, family, work, money, you name it. I've experienced tragedy, financial failure, rejection, and lots of stress that has made me want to crawl into a hole and never come out. The good news is I'm still here and you are too! Today I'm partnering with Frost Bank to share six ways to get out of a rut!

1

EXERCISE

Exercising is my #1 stress reliever. IÂ mean shopping is up there at the top, but I only have so much money to spend in a month. When I'm stressed about work or feel down, going to the gym allows me to get outside of my head for an hour. I'm not worried, I'm not stressed...instead I'm focused and dedicated to one thing which is getting through my workout.

SEEK PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION

3

PLAN SOMETHING FUN

When I'm down in a rut, having something to look forward to always lifts my spirits. A vacation, a happy hour, a date night, an event. It's a scientific fact that planning a vacation increases happiness. I love to plan events ahead of time! When I'm having a tough weekend with my kids, knowing I have a date night to look forward to makes the day SO much better! You decide what brings you joy and put it on the calendar.

4 2

Staying optimistic is key! Michelle Gielan, positive psychology researcher and best selling author, describes optimism as the expectation of good things to happen and the belief that behavior matters, especially in the face of challenges. Optimists generally view setbacks as temporary. They believe that if they take steps to fix the problem, they can improve their circumstances. It can be tough to see the light at the end of a dark tunnel, but your thinking and actions can guide you out. By believing that life's challenges are temporary rather than permanent, you can feel 62 | moderntexasliving.com

inspired to take meaningful steps toward improvement!

GET OUTSIDE

Fresh air and spending time outside does wonders for the soul. That is why cold and dreary winters are so tough and depressing (one reason I'm not leaving Texas)! On days when I'm stressed or anxious about work or life in general, a walk outside is what I need. It's amazing how my creative juices and ideas start flowing when I'm by myself walking and observing nature. I don't listen to music or talk on the phone...I simply enjoy the silence and let my mind wander. I think every person should spend 10-15 minutes a day practicing some sort of meditation, and mine is spent walking.

5

HELP SOMEONE ELSE

Take the focus off of yourself and do something kind for someone else! Not only does it take your mind off your own problems, but it feels good to help others! Have a friend or family member going through a tough time?

Have cookies or flowers delivered, help them with a chore at their home (new moms could use this), or my favorite, send them a DoorDash gift card so they don't have to worry about dinner! If you are able to help someone else out of a rut, it can spark confidence and potentially help you as well.

TALK IT OUT

6

Talking about what you are going through with a friend, spouse, or even your parents can be very beneficial as long as they are supportive and open to listening. I don't really talk to Alex about work, because he gives me advice and all I want to do is vent. Some topics are best to discuss with certain groups, so give your mom a call, or set up a lunch with your best friend. Make sure to surround yourself with positive and uplifting friends! Talking through a problem can have significant benefits. I would also advise you to see a counselor or therapist if you're in a major rut. Having an outside perspective can be very beneficial.

What Are FILLERS?

D

ermal fillers are soft, gel-like substances that are injected under the skin. They can address a number of common concerns like fullness and contouring of the cheekbones, volumization of the lips, smoothing of lip lines and nasolabilal folds (the creases that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth) and the tear troughs for the under eye. WHAT ARE YOU INJECTING? One of the most common compounds used in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin, and it plays a huge role in keeping skin hydrated and volumized. HA fillers, depending on the consistency and purpose, can last from six months to much longer before gradually being absorbed and eliminated by the body. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? One of the main benefits of HA fillers, aside from their natural appearance when injected, is that they can be dissolved by a special solution in case the person dislikes the appearance or for any other reason.

IS IT PAINFUL? Most HA fillers now have lidocaine, a numbing agent, in them to maximize comfort during treatment. We also offer a topical numbing cream to further aid in reducing discomfort and even a dental block if requested. Most clients are pleasantly surprised that the process of fillers is not nearly as painful as they imagined. One of the biggest fears clients have is the discomfort which makes me sad, because we can work around that. HOW NOTICEABLE WILL IT BE? WILL I BRUISE OR SWELL? The next fear is “how bad will the bruising and swelling be, how noticeable will it be that I had filler done”? In the consult, we go over all the ways to reduce your chances of bruising and swelling, but to name a few, be hydrated, avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory products such as Advil, Aleve and Ibuprofen 3-7 days prior. The number of days to stop these things will vary according to each individual. We will address it at the time of your free consultation.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? The cost will vary somewhere between 350.00 a syringe up to 750.00, depending on what you are addressing, and where and how many syringes are needed to achieve your goal. We use different fillers for different areas. Filler that is placed in the cheeks is thicker and longer lasting than filler that is placed in the lips, tear trough region, and fine lines. Cheek filler may last up to 2 years where other fillers may last up to a year. The best advice I can give anyone is take advantage of the free consult so you can address all your concerns. The consult is a good opportunity to see if you feel comfortable with the answers you receive to your questions, but also if you feel confident in your injector understanding your goal. Your journey is just that, yours, so it’s important you feel comfortable and confident, and that’s my goal when you come in. I love fillers and I want you to love it, too, but first we have to decide if this is the right choice for you.

Hair Hype By Amy Lynn

Naturally, when we see the first signs of spring, we reach for lighter clothing and make plans to lay out in the sun. But something often overlooked is how we approach our seasonal hair care routine.

START WITH A TRIM Winter's cold, dry air has likely taken a toll on your strands, so snipping off the dead ends is the first step to freshening up for spring.

ASK FOR A HAIR TREATMENT Malibu Crystal Gel Treatment is a two step wellness treatment to draw out malicious mineral deposits, chlorine, and other impurities transforming tones, texture, vibrancy, and strength of the hair.

ASK FOR A STRENGTHENING TREATMENT Follow it with an Olaplex Treatment to help strengthen and relink broken bonds in the hair.

At Home Care SPRING CLEAN Start with cleaning out all products older than 9 months. You can’t have clean hair if you don’t have clean products. Clean all brushes, combs, and clips. Product buildup and bacteria attach itself to your brushes, which means you are styling your hair with grease and dirt.

PROLONG YOUR BLOWOUT Spray dry shampoo into your hair when it's dry, then finish blow drying. This will prolong your blowout because the dry shampoo will absorb oils of your hair.

WHAT YOU NEED • Toothbrush • 1 tsp Baking Soda • 1 tsp Shampoo

STEPS Mix the shampoo and baking soda. Then, scrub the brushes and tools, and rinse with warm water. Repeat once per month.

Grammy Award Winner

Takes us Back Home to her Texas Roots

M

iranda Lambert’s childhood home sits along a country road in Lindale, Texas, 90 miles east of Dallas. When you pull up to the house, the dogs rush to greet you just about as quickly as Miranda’s mother and father Rick and Bev, whose enthusiastic “come on in” echoes through the open front door on the raised wraparound porch. The house, built in 1931, wasn't the one Miranda Lambert famously sang about in her No. 1 hit "The House That Built Me," but it was the one the star lived in from the time she was 14 until she left for Nashville with a dream, and it played a big role in rebuilding her once broken family. The road to superstardom for the outspoken girl from East Texas who said she was once "so shy teachers called her mom with concern" hasn't been an easy or simple one. In fact, it's got all the makings of a good country song. Her family's been broke. More than once. And homeless. Her parents, who once investigated a president, admit they are church-goers who "drink and cuss," but they’re loved for their authenticity and they've helped dozens of abused women and children through the years. And even after losing everything and bouncing back, the couple gambled it all again, betting on their daughter's success. And boy did that pay off! Miranda Lambert is the most awarded female musician in the history of country music, and while she's a worldwide star, if you ask her, she'll tell you she’ll always be just a small town girl from Texas. "Small towns instill values that stick with you throughout your life. I think growing up in Lindale gave me a strong foundation," Miranda tells Modern Texas Living. "There’s a comfort and familiarity there." Lindale became home for the Lamberts when Miranda was 6, but not by choice. Rick and Bev were private investigators with a lucrative business in Dallas until the oil crash in the late 80's hit Texas hard and the family lost everything. They found themselves homeless until a family member in Lindale offered to give them a place to stay. They had a roof over their heads, but the times were tight. For two weeks, Rick remembers, “we had peanut butter and crackers in the house to eat and that was it.”

74 | moderntexasliving.com

By Julie Hays

"For Christmas that year I asked for food," Bev added. "We were hungry and had two children." The Lamberts eventually scraped up the money to move out and into their own home down the street in Lindale for $275 a month. "We called it the house from hell," Rick said. "It had rats even our cats were scared of." That time period is still hard for the Lamberts to talk about. Rick says he was "a dangerous man," angry, depressed and suicidal as he worked 20 hours a day, often sleeping on the floor of his office, but still not able to provide for his family. Even in the darkest days, Bev had her eyes set on a big old white frame house that she passed every day on her drive home to the "house from hell." "I would hang my hand out the window and say 'If You could just give me that house. If I could just live there.' I would just hang my hand out and claim it," she said. And someone must have heard her cry, because one day a knock at the door changed it all for the struggling family. "A little old man in overalls comes up to the house of horrors," Bev said. "He said 'are you the lady that drives by my pasture every day? I see you've fixed this little place up real nice.' And I said 'yes sir, best I could.' And he said 'would you consider renting my place? And I was like 'do I hear angels singing?' I told him I paid only $275 a month at this house and he said 'how about we do $250,' and I said 'how about you give me a five-year lease?’” She got the lease, and when Miranda was 7, the family moved into what’s known today by millions of country music fans as the house that built Miranda Lambert, although if you ask her parents, they’ll tell you it’s the house that built the whole family. "That's where the real healing took place," Bev said through tears. And it’s where Miranda began to fall in love with the music that would make her a household name. Miranda's parents knew she could sing by the time she was three when she barely knew the words, but could sing harmony to Marie Osmond's "Meet Me in Montana." Her dad bought her first guitar when she was 8, but it wasn't until a few years later she got interested enough to play it.

"I decided to pick it up and my dad taught me my first chords, three to be exact," Miranda said. "That's about all you need for country music." "I don't consider myself a singer, but I told her how to play guitar and taught her how to write a song," Rick remembers. When Miranda was a teenager her parents’ private investigations business caught a break—a high-profile case that would give the family a much-needed financial boost. Bev and Rick were hired by the lawyers for Paula Jones to investigate Bill Clinton as part of his impeachment investigation. Jones, a former Arkansas state employee, sued Clinton for sexual harassment in May 1994 and ultimately won an $850,000 settlement, although Clinton’s attorney maintained her claims were baseless.

76 | moderntexasliving.com

The money they made from that case gave them just enough to purchase their first home since hitting rock bottom, and not long after, Miranda spread her wings musically, hitting the road to sing at the age of 16. She finished her last year of high school in an alternative setting so she could focus on her career. Bev and Rick laugh when asked if they remember where it all began. "Everything," Bev said. "We were right in the middle of it all. We were her start. I basically quit being a PI to be her booking agent and her manager, or "momager.” "I was her driver, her guitar player, her merchandise guy and her road manager," Rick said. "My mom drove me around to gigs and helped me drop off my music at radio stations. They put everything they had into helping me make this dream come true," Miranda said. Everything. Including their last dollar, again. "For the good or the bad I guess I'll let the cat out of the bag," Bev said. "We spent every penny we had on her. We were subject to being homeless again." Miranda played in every honky tonk that would have her, opening for such Texas acts as Kevin Fowler, Cooder Graw and Jack Ingram. But Bev recalls being turned down by many just because Miranda was a girl. "Oh, it was a boys' club all the way," Rick added. Miranda's big breakthrough came by way of a now fellow Grammy-award-winning singer who grew up just 12 miles down the road in Mineola, Kacey Musgraves.

Musgraves' grandmother was a friend of the Lamberts and told them about a new reality show in which Kacey was still too young to compete called "Nashville Star." Miranda's mom drove her to the audition in Dallas where she says her daughter didn't exactly give it her best shot. "She said 'well I tried.' She sat in the back on the way home. She had brought a boy along for the ride and I think she thought sitting in the back with him was safer than in the front with me. I was so mad. I was like 'you half-assed me.' She said 'I didn't half-ass you.’ I was like 'no you half-assed me. When we were broke I still threw you the best birthday party I could throw. When I take you town to town to town I do the best job I can do. You half-assed me and I've never done that to you. Don't ever do that to me again.'" And Miranda didn’t. She went to the next audition a month later in Houston and blew the judges away, earning a spot on the nationally televised show where she came in third and more importantly caught the attention of Nashville executives. "We walked in the bar in Houston and she looked like 10 million dollars," Bev said. "She picked up her guitar and I'm not joking when I say she walked in and the crowd parted. She went to win." Lambert's star has never stopped rising since. In 2005, she released her first major-label debut album Kerosene, which was certified platinum and produced the single "Me and Charlie Talking," co-written with Rick, who said he still receives royalty checks in the mail to this day for the song he penned 15 years ago with his daughter.

But beyond the guitar lessons and road trips, Miranda said the best thing her parents offered her was sound advice. "The best advice my mom ever gave to me was to know who you are and stick with it. In the beginning of my music career, when we were early on in the record label days, my dad told me to 'sit at the head of the table and tell them what you want to be.' He told me not to let them turn me into anything that I didn’t want to be and I haven’t. The fact that people have accepted me in every state and every phase, is a blessing, but I think it’s because my songs reflect who we all are."

Miranda's international success has earned her more than 70 prestigious awards and honors. She’s the most decorated artist in the history of the Academy of Country Music with 34 ACM awards including nine Female Vocalist of the Year wins as well as ACM Song of the Decade for "The House That Built Me." The ACM also presented her with the Gene Weed Milestone Award in 2019. Lambert has 12 Country Music Television wins and 32 nominations, 13 CMA awards, two Grammy awards and was named the 2019 Recording Industry Association of America's Artist of the Year. And it doesn't stop there. Lambert became only the 15th Artist in Residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Nashville Symphony honored her with its Harmony Award. Her parents say she's too shy to show off her accolades to anyone and, in fact, she keeps them pretty much out of view, even in her own home in Nashville. But, they say, she has used her star power to help out many people, including those in her hometown. Lambert opened a boutique in the heart of downtown Lindale called the The Pink Pistol which brings in thousands of visitors a year. "For me, opening The Pink Pistol wasn’t just about opening a store, it was about revitalizing the town where we opened the store," Miranda said. "That’s one reason why we don’t sell anything online. I want people to come to my hometown and see all it has to offer. My mom will tell me stories of people they meet that have visited the store from all around the country. That is really special to me." In the corner of the Pink Pistol, you'll find a wine tasting room for Red 55 Winery, a winery on the Lambert’s property in Lindale, which started as a small idea and grew into something much bigger. "The winery started as a novelty and it's grown into an industry which we're so proud of," Bev said. "We're now in 28 states and have an online store and a tasting room. We were not expecting it, but what a welcomed gift that is." 78 | moderntexasliving.com

For More Information on Lindale check out the VisitLindale.Gov

And it's a venture Miranda has welcomed with open arms. "Friends, family, wine and music have always been a big part of my family’s traditions," Miranda said. "My mom and dad wanted to start the wine line, and it just felt right." Miranda has also used her celebrity to help Waco native Wade Bowen. She sang harmony vocals on his recent song "So Long 6th Street" and supported his annual hometown benefit MusicFest. Last summer, Rick and Bev attended the all-day event and appeared on stage where they offered up auction items, including a guitar autographed by Miranda to benefit the Bowen Family Foundation. "I’ve known Wade for years. He and I played a lot of shows together when we were both starting out. He is like family to us, a sweetheart and great singer/songwriter," Miranda said. "I believe in what they are doing. Texans have a certain bond and pride. We always want to support each other’s causes."

Miranda's passion is improving the lives of shelter pets, which led her and her mom to found "MuttNation" in 2009, a non-profit to help shelter pets. "When you get to a certain place in your career, you have to decide what to use your platform for and I knew right away that I wanted mine to be shelter pets," Miranda said. "My parents brought me home from the hospital and there was a yellow lab sleeping under my crib. My entire life I've always had at least one dog around. Growing up, we lived way out in the country and there were always stray dogs around that my parents would let me keep. It was just part of my blood to care for rescue pets." On Lambert's current Wildcard tour she's asking fans to fill little red wagons with pet supplies or toys for a chance to win a meet and greet with the singer. This tour will look a little different because the country crooner has her husband of one year in tow. Miranda surprised the world when she announced that she was married in January 2019 to New York cop, Brendan McLoughlin, whom she met after a friend spotted him working security during a "Good Morning America" appearance Miranda was making as part of the group "Pistol Annies." Lambert's pals invited Brendan to her show that evening during which, Bev tells us, she sat with him in the audience and the rest is history. "Miranda is the happiest she's ever been. I think she's met the match that's going to last like our marriage for 40 years," Bev said, beaming. When not touring, Miranda splits her time between a home in New York she purchased after her marriage, a home in Austin where she spends time with her younger brother,

the IT guy for her brand along with his partner, and, of course, her home in Tennessee. "My safe haven is my farm in Nashville," Miranda tell us. "I can go there and be surrounded by my animals. It’s great because they don’t know what I do for a living, and just love me for me." Oddly enough, she says, growing up in a small town actually prepared her for life in the public eye. "Living in a small town everyone knows everyone’s business. In a lot of ways, that’s very similar to living in the public eye. People are always interested in every aspect of your life," she said. Lambert said if she were to write a letter to her younger self, she'd tell her to remember, through the ups and downs, all would be OK. "In the beginning I had a lot to prove. I came out gunsa-blazing with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder," Miranda said. "It’d be nice to be able to tell my younger self that it was all going to work out." The singer hopes in time she'll be remembered as much more than a hit maker. "I guess as someone who took risks, both musically and personally. And someone who was an animal advocate. Most importantly a good friend, daughter, sister, wife and stepmom. Those are the things that really matter—the memories you leave with the people you love." Memories that for this 36-year-old superstar started with a dream as a teenager in a house in a town of 6,000 in East Texas. "I’m grateful for all of the experiences I’ve had, getting to travel around and sing, but my roots will never change. I love that Lindale will always be my home." MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 79

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE? Functional Medicine is a whole body approach to care that treats the root cause of problems instead of treating the symptoms. We ask the question “why” is the symptom there in the first place? Symptoms could be a result of many factors: genetics, inflammation, malnutrition, stress, poor sleep, hormone imbalances, etc. Many problems are interconnected and it is our job to become a detective and investigate their cause. CAN FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE HELP MY CHILD WHO IS STRUGGLING? Yes! We have treated many children who have been diagnosed with developmental delays, behavioral disorders, Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD, et cetera, that have had tremendous breakthroughs. Research has found that inflammation of the brain drives many negative behavioral symptoms such as inattentiveness, impulsivity, sensory processing difficulties, developmental delays, irritability, and poor sleep patterns. Once the source of inflammation is identified and treated, we are able to see dramatic improvement in awareness, focus, sleep, bowel habits, sensory challenges WE F O C U S and communication.

WHAT TYPE OF TESTING DO YOU DO? Every person is different and will not need the exact same testing. However, we commonly recommend comprehensive stool testing on most of our clients as studies have found that gut health plays an integral role in overall health. We also utilize epigenetic testing, environmental toxicity testing, bloodwork and micronutrient testing if necessary. We decide which testing is necessary after a thorough client history where we are able to identify key triggers that are playing a role in the problem.

HOW DO YOU TREAT DYSFUNCTION IN THE BODY? We focus on supporting the body through diet, supplementation and lifestyle modification. We support the body with missing vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that it may be deficient in while also focusing on removing things 84 | moderntexasliving.com

that may be hindering the body from healing such as toxins, inflammatory foods and stress. We also utilize herbs and other treatments when necessary to treat chronic infections. DO YOU TELL ME TO STOP PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION? No! While some prescriptions can be a bandaid, they can be necessary while we are working on the root cause of the problem. Always speak with your prescribing doctor before stopping a medication.

IS THIS A “QUICK FIX”? Oftentimes it has taken many years for these symptoms to develop. Consequently, these symptoms will not go away overnight.
