Bring the calm. Find the focus. Deliver the learning. Where do you start with creating practical sensory spaces in your classroom? What does wellbeing look like in your environment? What resources can help regulate children with varying needs throughout the day?
It’s not as overwhelming as it may seem. This guide walks you through how to set up intentional sensory spaces, from setting up your learning environment and choosing sensory tools to supporting regulation, wellbeing and more. Each section has a quick-scan key for outcomes, with a focus on helping children feel safe, supported, healthy and confident to engage in learning and relationships. We’ve invited Sonja Walker, the founder of Kids First Children’s Services to share her incredible insights.
Together, let us help you curate a sensoryfocused space that brings the calm, finds the focus and delivers the learning.

Supporting student wellbeing & learning through intentional, inclusive choices By Sonja Walker, Founder of Kids First Children’s Services Every classroom is different because every student is different. Over the years, I’ve worked alongside teachers supporting children with a wide range of sensory, emotional, behavioural and learning needs. What I see time and again is that there is rarely a single solution that works for everyone. Instead, the most successful classrooms are those that are flexible, thoughtful and intentional. They recognise that students learn, engage and regulate in different ways, and they provide a range of opportunities for children to participate successfully throughout the school day.
Recognising the moments that matter Teachers are incredibly skilled at noticing when something isn’t working, but it’s often what sits beneath the behaviour that tells the real story. Perhaps it’s the student who can’t sit through explicit teaching, becomes overwhelmed after lunch or an assembly, avoids writing because they tire quickly, or struggles to begin a task independently. Others may withdraw, become anxious or appear disengaged when learning feels too challenging. Rather than asking “How do we stop this behaviour?” I encourage educators to ask, “What is this student telling us they need?” That small shift often changes everything.
Sonja is the leader and founder of Kids First Children’s Services. As a qualified teacher of 30+ years, Sonja is dedicated to advocating for the needs of children and families in the community. Her multidisciplinary team brings together child psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and specialist early intervention teachers.

Creating environments that support participation The environment is one of the most powerful tools we have. I’ve seen simple changes make a significant difference. A movement break before a demanding lesson. Alternative seating that helps a student stay engaged. A quiet space where someone can reset before returning to class. Visual schedules, sensory tools or organisational supports that reduce frustration and build independence. These strategies aren’t about giving students special treatment. They’re about removing barriers so more children can participate, learn and feel successful.
Understanding different sensory needs No two students regulate in exactly the same way. Some children seek movement because it helps organise their bodies and attention. Others need calm, predictable spaces with reduced sensory input before they can focus again. Neither approach is right or wrong. They’re simply different ways children respond to their environment. When we understand those differences, we can respond with purpose instead of assumption.
Designing sensory spaces with intention A sensory space doesn’t need to be large or elaborate to make a meaningful difference. The most effective spaces feel calm, safe and purposeful. They’re flexible enough to support a range of sensory needs while helping students recognise when they need to pause, regulate and return to learning. Just as importantly, they become part of everyday classroom practice. Not somewhere students are sent, but somewhere they can learn to understand and manage their own regulation over time.
Supporting every learner to thrive When we change the environment, we often change what’s possible for the student.
The goal isn’t to make every student fit the classroom. The goal is to create classrooms where every student can succeed. When educators thoughtfully combine supportive environments, consistent routines and practical sensory tools, they’re not simply managing behaviour, they’re helping children build confidence, independence and the skills they’ll use for life.
