How to bring an intentional approach to sensory & wellbeing.

What’s clear is that every child is unique, so it’s important to move beyond a ‘one size fits all’ solution in your service. It means creating supportive, accessible environments that meet a range of specific physical, emotional and developmental needs. It’s all about being intentional with your choices.

Understanding the key moments Every day includes moments when children need extra support. Moments that require a tailored approach to sensory stimulation.

Settling into the day This is a time when focus and big energy can compete with big feelings.

Supporting overwhelm Children can become overwhelmed by noise, mess, movement, light or busy group spaces. They need support to feel calm and safe.

Navigating transitions These times can be tricky, as children move from one activity to another. It’s a time when the right approach can support in a specific way. The right approach used consistently can help them to manage more easily.

Sonja is the leader and founder of Kids First Children’s Services. As a qualified teacher of 30+ years, Sonja is dedicated to advocating for the needs of children and families in the community. Her multidisciplinary team brings together child psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and specialist early intervention teachers.

Recognising the cues Children often show us what they need, if we know what to look for.

A child who becomes upset when outdoor play ends may need more time to process change, a clear visual cue or a task to perform to manage the demands of that moment.

A child who refuses to pack away may feel overwhelmed, unsure where things go, or frustrated that play has been interrupted.

A child struggling to join group time may need movement before sitting, a defined place to sit, something appropriate to hold, or a visual reminder of what will happen next.

The goal is not to change the child.

The goal is to create an environment where every child can participate successfully.

Most children are not being difficult when they wriggle, tip, stretch, fidget or leave the mat. Their bodies may be seeking movement or retreat so that they can feel balanced. A few practical ways to create an environment to meet these needs are: Use calm-down or reset spaces in a positive and inclusive way.

Plan short movement breaks before seated learning.

Help children participate in play, routines and relationships.

Tools that are more than toys Well-chosen sensory and wellbeing resources can help you meet children where they are and support your practice in the most meaningful way. So, when a child won’t come near the painting table or bolts from group time, our first question is not ‘how do we stop that?’. Instead, we ask what the child’s nervous system is doing, what the environment is asking of them, and what would make joining in feel possible for them.

The resources in this guide are tools for exactly that – and they work best when matched to a specific child, watched closely, and adjusted as needed. Observe before you prescribe! A tool that calms one child can overwhelm another.
