Muttville’s new colourful, cage-free rescue HQ is a dream for senior dogs

To

walk through Muttville’s new senior dog rescue center is to totally reimagine what an animal shelter can be. The senior-dog-focused San Francisco-based organization is the first shelter in the nation to provide a cage-free environment, one that bursts with fun and colour. Celebrity designer Ken Fulk is behind the glowup, creating whimsical spaces that invite dog cuddles and conversation. From the pink-tiled Glam Shampoochery to offices designed like Victorian houses, a mural-festooned courtyard, and bone-shaped benches by ecological sculptor Colin Selig, the space is lightyears away from the dog shelters of the past.

“Potential adopters can meet the dogs in a very relaxed way, creating a magical moment and an adoption,” says founder and CEO Sherri Franklin.

Since its establishment in 2007, over 12,000 older dogs who might otherwise have been euthanized have found safe haven and homes through Muttville. But Muttville is more than just a dog shelter. There are community programs for senior citizens, humane education for children, and even an on-site veterinary clinic.

“I believe wholeheartedly in Muttville’s mission, so it was a resounding yes when they asked if we could add a little magic to their new forever home,” says Fulk. “Since Muttville

Weighing 12-15 pounds, the DanishSwedish Farmdog is known for being affectionate and energetic.

eet the new dog on the block! The Danish-Swedish Farmdog is the latest dog breed to receive full American Kennel Club recognition. This small, attentive breed is now eligible to compete for Best in Show trophies in the Working Group. The AKC specifies that a breed that is newly recognized does not mean that the breed is newly created. Many breeds that gain full AKC recognition have existed for decades, and some are ancient.

Weighing 12 -15 pounds, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog is known for being affectionate and energetic. This is a peopleoriented, friendly, and loving companion. Originally known as the Danish Pinscher, they could be found on farms in Denmark and Southern Sweden as a multipurpose barnyard dog. The Danish-Swedish Farmdog performed a variety of jobs, but its specialty was vermin control. These small dogs are versatile, love to work, and enjoy a challenge. They are coordinated,

agile, and very fast, needing daily exercise. This breed is low maintenance when it comes to grooming, with the occasional brushing and bath being all they need to look their best.

“We are excited to welcome the Danish-Swedish Farmdog to the AKC registry as our 202nd breed,” says Gina DiNardo, AKC President and CEO. “This compact working dog is very versatile, loves a challenge and having a job to do. French Bulldog is America’s most popular breed for the third year in a row, according to AKC registration statistics.

The French Bulldog’s ongoing popularity shows no signs of slowing, thanks to the breed’s smarts and playful, adaptable nature.

“The Frenchie has solidified itself as America’s sweetheart, and it’s no surprise why,” says Gina DiNardo, AKC President and CEO. “They are fabulous companions for a variety of people.”

Behind the scenes, however, the smart and courageous Cane Corso has been quietly climbing the charts. Over the past decade, registrations for this loyal breed have increased 414% and the Cane Corso has gone from 47th most popular in 2014 to 14th in 2024.

“The Cane Corso is one to watch, as it has consistently increased in popularity since becoming recognized [in 2010],” says DiNardo.

“Corsi are majestic and intensely loyal, but not for everyone.”

Other breeds moving up the chart include the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (#72 in 2023 to #63 in 2024), Chinese Crested (#79 in 2023 to #68 in 2024), American Staffordshire Terrier (#95 in 2023 to #77 in 2024), American Eskimo Dog (#129 in 2023 to #116 in 2024), Bracco Italiano (#152 in 2023 to #132 in 2024) and German Pinscher (#151 in 2023 to #133 in 2024).

An animal sanctuary in Thailand offers second chances for stray, abandoned, and injured dogs

“I’m

kind of an extreme guy,” Michael J. Baines says. “I have over 200 tattoos.

I have 1,200 dogs.”

Baines is the president and co-founder of The Man That Rescues Dogs (TMTRD) in Bang Phra, Thailand, just outside of Bangkok. Baines and his staff care for 800 dogs in the sanctuary, along with an additional 400 street dogs that his team have had spayed or neutered and now feed and monitor daily.

He relies on the generosity of animal lovers to pay for everything. “I get donations from all over the world,” he says.

“The total cost per day is $1,600 US to keep my foundation up and running.”

Baines never planned to devote his life to dogs. Born in Scotland and raised in Sweden, he studied dance and theatre—briefly enjoying the spotlight as a breakdancer with the stage name Sugar Rock—before enrolling in culinary school in Sweden and working in kitchens around Stockholm. The restaurant industry’s long hours and party atmosphere led him to become addicted to drugs and alcohol, transforming him into a person he scarcely recognizes now. “The farther into the substances I went, the further away from compassion I drifted,” he writes in his 2024 memoir, Home. Made.

When a coworker who frequently vacationed in Thailand—and always returned with renewed energy and a healthy glow—invited him to tag along,

And they don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves. “They still live their life.”

Baines went. “Thailand was a mini cleanse, an utter relief for my body,” he shares in his memoir. “I returned to Stockholm and my substance-heavy lifestyle, but I had tasted a bit of freedom, and I started craving that feeling just as much as I had craved the drugs.”

Baines began visiting Thailand as often as possible, and within a few years, he landed a job there as a restaurant manager. Upon moving to the country in 2002, he immediately stopped doing drugs, but ending his decade-long addiction to alcohol proved more of a struggle. “It was years until I didn’t feel tempted,” he writes. “I feigned dependability until it became a habit.

Work became an amazing foundation on which to build structure.”

His animal rescue work in Thailand started with a single dog. “There was a dog that showed up behind my restaurant and was in really bad shape.

I fed her every day for five days, and I gained her trust. I picked her up, I put her in my truck, and I drove to the veterinarian,” he says. Thanks to his intervention, this sickly, malnourished animal transformed into a healthy dog, and Baines managed to find a loving home for her. “Seeing her like this and knowing that I had facilitated this filled me with satisfaction, connectedness, and optimism—feelings I didn’t know I had access to. I fulfilled my promise to her, and knowing I was capable of changing her story, developed my awareness that there were other fates I could rewrite,” he writes in his memoir.

“Mamuang was my first rescue. And this feeling would prove to be more euphoric than drugs, alcohol, or love.”

Baines began to notice all of the other dogs in the area that were also skinny, hungry, and suffering. He started feeding them—more and more of them each day—while also running the small restaurant that he had opened in 2013.

“That was my plan: feeding 80 to 100 dogs per day and continuing my restaurant,” he says. But then a whistleblower contacted him about the horrific state of the local dog pound, and Baines felt compelled to check it out. Shocked by what he saw, he soon took it over. For a while, he ran both the dog pound and

They line up one by one and take their places at the starting line,” Baines writes in his memoir. “The scene is surreal. It feels like an F1 start as they all want to take the lead. But, after a minute, they find their rhythm and coordinate themselves into formation beside staff members, volunteers, and visitors… Their happiness never falters, and they are not shy to express their gratitude. There is nothing like the howls of 44 dogs celebrating their limitlessness.”

“There are so many dogs sitting and waiting in shelters all over the world for their hero.” He notes that more than one million shelter dogs are euthanized in the United States each year. “That’s why we urge people to adopt locally.”

his restaurant, but eventually, it became too much. A choice was inevitable. He sold his business in 2018 and devoted his life to the dogs: “I decided to cook for dogs instead of people.”

After multiple expansions over the years, his 8,000-square-metre shelter now houses 800 dogs. They all require food, exercise, grooming, and veterinary care. Baines employs a staff of 45—including two veterinarians—and also enlists the help of volunteers and veterinary interns from abroad. He says, “It’s good for us. It’s good for them. It’s good for the dogs.”

Meet the Wheelchair Mafia One specific group of pooches at TMTRD has received much attention on social media: the Wheelchair Mafia. “We have about 44 dogs in wheelchairs, rescued since 2016, and they’re a bunch of happy yappers,” Baines says. “They don’t know they’re paralyzed.” And they don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves. “They still live their life.”

These disabled dogs are delighted to set out on their walks each day at 6 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., which are possible thanks to sturdy wheelchairs designed by an American company called Walkin’ Pets. Though the devices are pricey, they give the animals tremendous freedom. “I want the best quality for our dogs,” Baines says. “They can run over ditches and stones. They can even swim with them.”

“The excitement that hangs in the air is

Baines invites anyone who has felt moved by the Wheelchair Mafia videos on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube to visit the sanctuary and see the mutts in motion in real life. “You get more awareness that the dog is not done with life just because they’re paralyzed or have amputated legs,” he says. Of the dogs that live with Baines personally, three have had a leg amputated. When people express sadness for these threelegged animals—which happens a lot— Baines always replies: “Hey, you only have two legs.”

He becomes especially passionate when talking about the importance of spaying and neutering to help control the stray population. The TMTRD veterinary clinic offers these services, along with vaccinations and dental cleanings, on a cost-recovery basis, to encourage locals to take proper care of their pets. Those who neglect to do so “hand over the problem to us,” Baines says. TMTRD has spayed or neutered each of the 400 street dogs on the daily feeding route and provides veterinary care whenever needed.

When discussing why he doesn’t house these 400 strays in the shelter, Baines is matter of fact about the situation.

“First of all, we don’t have enough space,” he says. “Second is that most of these dogs live in an area where they are safe. It’s their home. We can’t forget that.” It takes a staff member about six hours each day to drive around to check on and feed the animals. “It’s my original route,” Baines says. And some of the dogs he fed all those years ago are still alive today. “Amazingly.”

Baines has lived with as many as 18 dogs in his personal residence, and he currently shares his home with 15, but he vows he won’t take in more. “I say every time a dog passes away, that’s it, no more dogs,” he says, laughing. “Ask me again in one year. I suck at saying no. I love them all.”

Though Baines would like nothing more than to find loving homes for all the dogs housed at TMTRD, he’s extremely careful about approving adoptions. “People are interested, but we don’t approve them all,” he says.

“If the dogs have a worse life than here with us, I will not rehome them.”

And he refuses to send dogs abroad.

“There are so many dogs sitting and waiting in shelters all over the world for their hero.” He notes that more than one million shelter dogs are euthanized in the United States each year. “That’s why we urge people to adopt locally.”

As for finding the money to pay for everything that TMTRD does, Baines must get creative. “Some months are bad. Some months are better,” he says. Donations dropped precipitously during the COVID-19 pandemic but picked up again after a video of the dogs went viral. Popular video clips of the Wheelchair Mafia always boost donations, as do features on pet websites. Baines hopes a sequel to the 2013 documentary The Man That Rescues Dogs, which was produced by Swedish filmmaker Anna Tjernström and can be viewed on YouTube, might still come to fruition.

The memoir that Baines wrote recently, Home. Made., is the first book published by Witchcraft Creative, a social enterprise with the goal of helping nonprofit organizations raise funds while telling their own stories.

When Witchcraft founder Samantha Wilson reached out to Baines to encourage him to write about his amazing life and work, he only agreed because 70 percent of the royalties go back to his foundation. “It was an emotional rollercoaster,” he says of the writing experience. “I had to dig very deep.”

He plans to expand the sanctuary by another 2,000 square metres, then simply maintain it. “I’m not going to expand more. I’m not going to open up branches. I’m not going to go to other countries and do this. We have enough dogs in our area that need our attention, and I’m not going to jeopardize the dogs and staff we have,” he says. “I just need to make sure that the dogs are safe and the staff and the foundation can move forward for many years to come.”

The hours may be long, but the work is rewarding. “It’s my baby. It’s my foundation, and I need to take care of it,” he says. “It’s work, but it’s not a job.”

The man who has been a breakdancer, a chef, an addict, and an author before finding his calling as The Man That Rescues Dogs believes in the power of new beginnings, especially for those who have been misunderstood and abandoned. In his memoir, he writes about a scared but sweet pit bull rescue named Blueberry: “He wasn’t a menace. He was misunderstood and mistreated. I recognize now this common theme that unites the misfits of The Man That Rescues Dogs—both animal and human.”

Several of the staff who work at TMTRD have histories as checkered as Baines’ own past, which makes them apt caretakers for dogs that have been ignored or discarded by society. “I think it’s about second chances,” Baines says. “We give them a second chance.

Life has given me a second chance.”

As Baines ponders why dogs have become the singular focus of his life, he becomes thoughtful, recalling the many twists and turns of his personal life story. “When you’re at a crossroad, you choose the path. I could have chosen not to take the first dog in. I could have chosen not to close my restaurant,” he says. “But the dogs are so innocent, and they’re lovely creatures. I love to bond with them. They’re honest. They live day by day.” He says frankly, “I cannot stop now. How could I?” 

OWE MY LIFE TO A DOG. When I was two years old, my grandmother was babysitting me, and she decided we should go for a walk: her, me, and her six-year-old black Lab, Oreo. When we got outside, my grandmother realized she had forgotten her jacket, and she ducked back into the house. By the time she came outside again, I was gone. So was Oreo. My grandmother called my name, called Oreo’s name, and looked everywhere.

There was no trace of us.

She ran back inside to call my parents, who immediately called the police. Everyone was losing their minds, which were suddenly filled with the most terrifying visions: a fall into a well, a kidnapping, or worse. The police started to look for me, but they couldn’t find me either.

About twenty minutes later, a landscaper in the neighborhood saw a black Lab walking around the road.

Next to the dog, closer to the curb, was a toddler: me.

Whenever I tried to wander off the sidewalk into the street, Oreo herded me back like a hairy guardrail on four legs.

There was no footage taken of this event, and my grandmother, understandably, clams up when the story is brought up, so I only have the story my parents often retell as proof that it happened. That, and the manufactured memory I’ve created over the years each time the story is retold. But I have a ton of proof that this kind of thing happens all the time. Go online and search around for dogs rescuing children. There’s the one of a German Shepherd saving a kid from being attacked by another dog; a Boston

Terrier in Connecticut that alerted parents when a toddler began turning blue; a Border Collie in Texas that somehow knew that a teenager in the family was having a stroke. One of my favourites is one of the simplest: a Bernese Mountain Dog sitting on the floor near a crawling baby, a flight of stairs on the other side of the dog. The Berner knows the stairs are a hazard and that the baby is too young to know any better. As the baby starts to wander near the staircase, the dog repositions himself to block the baby from getting anywhere near it. The whole video is under a minute, but it’s hard to watch without tearing up a little bit.

Those moments should fill us with wonder. They should remind us of the power of technology to connect, not

just to divide. But they should do more than that. They should encourage us to think more about dogs and the role they have in our lives. They should answer any questions we might have about animal intelligence or the bonds between dogs and humans. They should help us to understand why an otherwise perfectly sane person would exit the ordinary work world and devote himself to photographing dogs as they walk along city streets— and not only photograph them but ask about the way that they affect the lives of their owners, and then write a book about that amazing process.

That otherwise sane person would go out into the world, not just the city streets around him but to Puerto Rico, to China, to a prison in upstate New

York, on a cross-country drive with his recently unemployed brother, all in the service of understanding the ways that dogs make the lives of their people better in every way.

1 Look to the Tail

A wagging tail is a common sign of a happy dog. But if your dog’s tail is stiff, standing upright, and wagging rapidly or shortly, it might be a sign that your dog is feeling fearful or aggressive.

A happily wagging tail will be relaxed and make broad strokes.

Slower broad strokes may indicate that your dog is feeling a bit shy, while faster broad strokes can indicate that your dog is feeling excited. Sally Grottini, Therapy Dog and AKC Evaluator and Trainer, states that we should “Keep in mind that a tail shows different emotions of a dog which are happiness, alertness, and fear. It is very important to watch all of the dog’s body language to know what they are feeling at the time.”

Direction of the wag counts too. A scientific team at the University of Trento in Italy found that dogs wag their tails to the right when looking at something they want to approach, such as their owner. But they wag their tails to the left when confronted with something they want to get away from, such as another dog with an aggressive posture.

The dogs’ directional tail wagging was a result of increased activation of either the left or right side of their brains, said neuroscientist Giorgio Vallortigara who led the study, reports National Geographic.

As a pet owner, you likely want to ensure that your dog is happy. While some behaviours, like your dog greeting you at the door with a wagging tail, are easy to interpret as happiness, others are a little more complex. Kate LaSala, a multicredited dog trainer and behaviour consultant says, “Typical signs of a happy or relaxed dog include soft, open mouth, relaxed ears, soft eyes, even body weight, and loose body— but when interacting with a dog, it’s important to look at the dog’s entire body language and communication, not just one thing like a tail wagging.” Read on for 16 signs that indicate that your dog is feeling happy so that you can understand on a deeper level just how your dog is feeling.

Though each dog is an individual and they express themselves in unique ways, there are general cues—some of them subtle—to watch for that will let you know how your dog is feeling. Look for these traits to ensure your dog is feeling fine!

Dr. Liza Cahn points out that this means their ears are held in their natural state, without any tension. This differs from ears that are pulled forward, which can indicate that your dog is feeling curious about something or ears that are pulled back, which might be because your dog is feeling nervous.

your dog is smiling, they just might be! As Grottini states, “Dogs will often show their moods through body language. If you see a dog with their tail up and fully wagging, their ears and mouth are relaxed, they are showing happiness, also known as the ‘happy face.’” They might also have a loose, lolling tongue. (Note that this differs from a panting dog, which may indicate that your dog is stressed). With a happy dog’s facial expression, you might see their teeth, but their mouth is relaxed, rather than aggressively baring their teeth.

The Wiggle

A happy dog has body language that is relaxed and loose. This might result in a full body wiggle, where they seem to be wagging their whole body. “They may hop/squiggle back and forth, also known as the ‘Happy Dance’,” says Grottini.

5 Play Bowing

The classic play bow, where your dog has their chest lowered to the ground and their rear end extended up in the air, is a good indication that they are happy and feeling friendly. In fact, A University of Michigan study set out to determine why exactly dogs perform this bowing behaviour. Researchers found that dogs play bow most often when there is a pause in play, and they wish to continue playing. So, if you see your dog play bow in the middle of playing fetch, this gives you a good idea that they’re enjoying what they’re doing and want to play more.

6 Tummy Time

Because a dog’s belly is a vulnerable spot, when your dog rolls over for a belly rub, they’re indicating that they feel safe and content with you, and are seeking affection. This can also be a sign of submission, intended to indicate that they are not a threat.

Grottini points out, “Dogs that are happy are usually more relaxed in their surroundings; they may lie down on their back with their feet in the air.”

10 An Appetite for Life

According to Dr. Liza Cahn, “If your dog is stressed or ill, they may refuse food”. While every dog has different eating habits, it’s important to check that they are consistent. For example, if your dog’s favourite time of the day is dinnertime and they start to show a lack of interest in eating, then it tells you that something else might be going on.

11 Content Sleep

A healthy adult dog sleeps 12-14 hours per day. If your pup is getting in this much snooze time, then it’s a good sign that they’re feeling fulfilled and content in their daily lives. You’ll also likely notice that their breathing is steady and relaxed while they’re sleeping.

7 Good Behaviour

Destruction can be a sign of anxiety, notes Grottini. So, if your dog is well-behaved, then it can tell you that they’re feeling fulfilled and happy. Dr. Liza Cahn says, “Destructive behaviour in dogs, such as chewing, scratching, and house soiling, can stem from a variety of issues with both behavioural and medical causes. If your dog is exhibiting new destructive behaviours, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to rule out contributing medical issues.” She also points out that separation anxiety, fears or phobias, and lack of mental or physical stimulation are common causes of destructive behaviours, none of which indicate a happy dog.

8 They Get Their Sniff On

If your dog is content, then their enjoyment of walks will be clear. You’ll likely notice a happy, bouncing stride. They’ll also likely stop to participate in enjoyable, calming behaviours like sniffing. This is supported by a 2020 University of Queensland study that looked at improving the well-being of shelter dogs with auditory and olfactory forms of enrichment. They found that shelter dogs who engaged in sniffing behaviours were more likely to show calm, content behaviours like laying down more frequently.

9 They Seek Affection

Dogs are pack animals, and you are your dog’s pack. A friendly dog who is feeling happy will likely seek out some affection from you at some point. This might be in the form of leaning against you, lying beside you, or asking for pets.

Look For A dog’s happy body posture will be “relaxed, free of tension, or if your dog is excited or engaged in play you may see a play bow or full-body wiggles,” says Dr. Liza Cahn.

hen Arthur Murray’s best friend—an Italian Maremma named Stella— began slowing down at age seven, the vintner did something that many pet owners dream of, but that few actually do.

“I decided to clone her,” says the co-founder and co-owner of Flambeaux Wine, a boutique winery and estate vineyard in Sonoma County’s famed Dry Creek Valley where Stella is the winery dog. “She was still very active, but I could see the wear and tear on her. I’d started to think that because she is a big dog, we may not have much time.”

After failing to connect with the Ohiobased breeder where they’d got Stella— emails bounced back, and the phone number and website were inactive— Murray considered his options. He was unwilling to switch breeds. “We have adopted other breeds into our family and actually also have a rescue dog,” says Murray, but for a dog working the vineyard, the Italian Maremma is the only type of dog he wanted.

Finding another breeder of Italian Maremmas also didn’t feel right to Murray. Stella’s personality—combining a social, outgoing nature, calm demeanor, and a desire to protect—seemed rare.

“She is a unicorn,” says Murray. “I felt

like Stella’s replacement needed to be born from the same genetic line.”

To gamble on getting another Maremma of Stella’s personality and instinct felt like too much of a risk to Murray.

Stella joined the Murray family in 2015, several years after the family bought an estate vineyard near Healdsburg, CA. Murray knew they needed a special dog—one that would fit in with both the winery property and with the family.

“We are dog people,” says Murray, who has owned many dogs, from mixed-breed rescues to purebreds, over the years.

WHAT'S A WINERY DOG? Winery dogs “have become their own

subculture,” says Arthur Murray, co-owner of Flambeaux Wine, a boutique winery and estate vineyard in Sonoma County. There are even books and calendars devoted to winery dogs, some of which Stella has been featured in.

Winery dogs protect the grapes from wild animals that come onto the property and are responsible for looking after the family that lives at the vineyard. The Murrays’ winery dogs, Stella and her genetic twin sister, Mella, alert the family as to who is coming onto the property and up the driveway.

“Sometimes, people will just show up,” says Murray.

As working family pets, they’re good company. “Working on your own in a winery can be lonely,” says Murray. “As a vintner and winery owner, it is almost understood that you will also have a dog.”

Murray had met another Italian Maremma and fallen in love with the breed. Mountain and herding dogs, Maremmas—which Murray describes are being similar to Great Pyrenees and are bred to protect flocks and ward off predators—seemed to be just the ticket.

As a working winery dog, Stella has chased away turkeys that can harm grapevines, as well as alerted a family member who was hiking the property, to the presence of a nearby mountain lion.

Over time, Stella unexpectedly became the face and personality of the Flambeaux wine brand— “it just became that way because of her ever-presence,” Murray says. She is now the mostrecognized member of the family.

“This big white dog in an open top truck—everybody knows her,” says Murray. “She goes with me to the Dry Creek Bar, a local hangout where we often run into grape growers and

winemakers—Flambeaux is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Chardonnay—and people just love her.”

Last year, Stella was named the Best Winery Dog in the Healdsburg Tribune, which Murray considers “to be an honour and a pretty serious title.”

More than a working dog, however, Stella is a beloved member of the Murray family.

In researching the options for cloning, Murray found and secured the services of Whitesboro, TX-based ViaGen Pets, a leading pet cloning company.

The first step in cloning a pet—the ViaGen Pets website gives the option to select a dog, cat or horse—is to preserve the animal’s genes through genetic preservation.

After scientists confirmed Stella’s cell culture, implantation took place late last year with the help of a canine surrogate.

In November, the world’s first cloned winery dog—Mella (short for Gemella, Italian for “twin”) was born.

After the nursing period, Stella’s mini-me arrived at Flambeaux Estate in January 2025, where she and her genetic twin sister— nine-and-a-half years her senior—are now living the wine-dog life.

The dogs “act like sisters,” Murray says of the dogs.

“Sometimes they fight. Mella is learning, but it is a challenge for Stella. Stella is so easy. She is always good and well-behaved.”

Cloning Process: 60 to 65 days, the same as a normal gestation period.

Stella and Mella are identical if you look at their faces, says Murray. “Physically there is no difference, other than their ages and sizes.” But that’s where the similarities end.

Nursing Process: The pup stays with its mother for 56 days before you receive your puppy.

“Stella is serious and focused,” says Murray. “Mella wants to play. [She] is naturally a little cuddlier and more affectionate than Stella.” The dogs are not yet friends, Murray adds, but they are used to being together. “Stella has clearly decided and knows that she needs to protect her.”

that can be done during a routine secondary procedure, such as a dental cleaning. The Murrays’ local vet procured the sample from Stella. The tissue sample is then sent to ViaGen Pets, where technicians culture new cells that share the same genetic make-up of the cloned animal. The cells are frozen until the owner is ready to begin the cloning process.

The initial growth of the sample takes about four weeks from the submission of the sample. (ViaGen Pets works with clients in the order in which they are received. Timelines depend on current pet cloning client demand). The cell nucleus created from the cloned animal’s sample is then injected into a donor egg that has had its own nucleus/genetic material removed, and an embryo is grown in a lab before being implanted in a surrogate mother. After implantation, the timeline is simply the normal gestation period—in dogs, 60 to 65 days. Once born, the cloned pup then needs to be nursed and weaned, which takes about 56 days.

Although the greatest chance of having a successful preservation is to have an animal biopsied while it is alive, deceased pets can also be cloned. In these cases, ViaGen states that the process and procedures are time-critical, as each day the animal has been deceased decreases the chance of a successful preservation. Pet owners need to contact ViaGen Pets as soon as possible immediately after the death of the animal for specific information and instructions. ViaGen Pets recommends that a veterinarian perform the tissue biopsy after a pet death, with instructions to be found on the website.

Refrigerating, not freezing, the pet’s tissue sample immediately after death is the first critical step—storage at higher or lower temperatures will decrease the chance of successful preservation and should be avoided.

The differences in the personalities of Stella and Mella are not unusual. Although the dogs are genetically the same—they are “best described as identical twins born at a later date,” the ViaGen website states—and the younger animal will be the same sex as the donor, but there may be slight differences in appearances. The environment that the animals are raised in also influence personality and behaviour.

To ensure consistency in training of the two dogs, the Murrays’ canine behaviourist Brian Campbell works with both Mella and Stella.

Should You Clone Your Dog? The Cloning

The human members of the Murray family don’t treat any of their dogs any differently, though Murray notes, “I think that Mella gets more attention by default, because she is a puppy.”

Outside of the family home, Mella attracts her share of the attention from people who know about her lineage and origins.

“There is a lot of interest and curiosity,” says Murray.

Bringing Mella into the world came with a steep price tag: $50,000 USD. Murray acknowledges it was expensive but insists that maintaining the connection with Stella’s genetic lineage makes it worthwhile. For this reason alone, he can see why some dog lovers would embrace the idea.

“Cloning a dog would have to be out of passion,” says Murray, “because you care so much about your dog, and you want to have that connection for their entire life rather than for just 10 to 13 years.”

Of course, there are always naysayers—people who feel that the fees associated with cloning pets are wasteful and that

those who do so are not recognizing the crisis in animal shelters. “We are fully aware of the need to adopt, and we have rescued dogs,” Murray says. “Cloning is expensive, and that is why no one should do it lightly, and we did not. You must really care about your dogs and have the money to invest in this. You do this because it is important to you. We wanted something as close to our Stella as possible.”

While Stella, who turns 10 this July has arthritis, she thankfully has no major health issues.

“When Stella passes, I will be completely devastated,” says Murray. “Mella will be there to help me… but it’s not going to be easy. I would likely not be in a good place without her.”

He has no regrets about his decision to clone. “The results could not have been better,” says Murray. “When Mella gets to the point that Stella is now in terms of age and ability, I might consider cloning again.” ■

DOG’S BEHAVIOUR Study shows dogs are more pessimistic after smelling an anxious person’s sweat

A

dog’s sense of smell is truly incredible. Their noses—up to 10,000 times more sensitive than our own—can detect different types of cancer, including melanoma, colorectal, lung, ovarian, prostate, and breast cancers, follow scent trails that are up to two days old (trained Bloodhounds have been known to follow trails even weeks later!), and sniff out bombs and landmines. They can also detect stress in humans.

Now, a 2025 study shows that how you smell when you are stressed may influence how your dog behaves.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, found that dogs were more pessimistic after sniffing a sweat sample from an anxious human.

“For thousands of years, dogs have learned to live with us, and a lot of their evolution has been alongside us. Both humans and dogs are social animals,

and there’s an emotional contagion between us,” the lead author of the paper, Zoe Parr-Cortes, told Scientific American. “Being able to sense stress from another member of the pack was likely beneficial, because it alerted them of a threat that another member of the group had already detected.”

The UK researchers enlisted 11 human volunteers, collecting sweat, saliva, and breath samples after having the volunteers perform math and public speaking tasks, and again after watching relaxing nature videos.

18 dogs were then taught that there were two bowls in specific locations in a room—one always containing food, and the other not. Then, new bowls were introduced in new spots to see how the dogs would respond to these novel placements.

“Do they approach quickly, optimistic that there’s going to be a food reward in there, or do they approach more slowly,

with a more pessimistic outlook that there might not be food in that bowl?”

Parr-Cortes told NPR. After sniffing sweaty cloths from anxious humans, the canines were slower to approach the new bowls, suggesting the canines were less likely to believe they contained a treat. The relaxed human scent didn’t have any notable effect on the dog’s behaviour.

Katherine A. Houpt, a professor emeritus of behavioral medicine at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine has another explanation: “It might not be that it’s changing their decision-making but more that it’s changing their motivation for food,” Houpt told Scientific American. “It makes sense, because when you’re super stressed, you’re not quite as interested in that candy bar.”

Regardless, scientists say the study findings show that dogs are highly sensitive to even strangers’ emotions.

“Importantly, it highlights how in-tune dogs are at picking up on mood,” ParrCortes told NPR. “So, keeping your relationship with your dog…based on positive reinforcement and happy, fun engagement is the best way to have a good relationship and a happy dog.” ■

GI upset is a common issue for our canine companions that can take many forms. Your dog’s digestive tract can become inflamed for a variety of reasons: something they ate, bacteria, a food sensitivity, an imbalance of the microbiome, medications, or a chronic issue, like a leaky gut. And when this happens, you’ll often see a variety of symptoms, from vomiting and diarrhea to lethargy and loss of appetite.

These vet-approved methods are natural, gentle, yet effective ways to help tame your dog’s upset tummy.

These tried-and-true home remedies— many of which probably already live in your pantry—will help provide relief to a gurgling canine gut!

PUMPKIN Pumpkin is

great for GI issues in dogs for a number of reasons. It’s nutrientdense without being heavy or hard to digest. The soluble fiber content in pumpkin adds bulk to your dog’s stool by absorbing excess water.

This makes pumpkin ideal when your dog has diarrhea. Not only that, but fiber

fermentation during digestion produces beneficial fatty acids that supply energy to cells, stimulate intestinal sodium and water absorption, and lower the pH level of the large intestines.

Simple digestive upset should resolve very quickly (within hours to a day or two) with a bit of extra care.

However, your dog should not exhibit signs of extreme lethargy, pale gums, or blood in the stool. If this happens, a trip to your vet is your very best option. Trust your instincts, and if you’re even the least bit concerned, head in.

Ironically, the same way pumpkin helps with diarrhea, means it can also help with constipation. The high water and fiber content helps bulk up and soften the stool, acting as a natural laxative and making it easier for your pup to poop.

For both diarrhea and constipation, start with one to two tablespoons once or twice a day and work up to three to four tablespoons. Just open a can of pure pumpkin (no pumpkin pie filling) and add to your dog’s regular food. If you want to use fresh pumpkin, that’s perfectly ok too! Just cook and puree it.

#2 BONE BROTH

Bone broth is gentle yet super nutritious. It increases fluid consumption and offers much-needed nutrients at a time when your pet needs a boost.

Additionally, some amino acids in bone broth can help improve digestion.

To make it, you’ll need: BONES: marrow bones and joints are good for the jelly, but any bones (raw or cooked; you’re straining them out) will work.

Keep what you’ll use over the next few days in an airtight container in the fridge and freeze the rest. It will keep in the freezer for several months.

#3 PRE/PRO/POSTBIOTICS

Pre, pro, and postbiotics play an integral role in keeping the gut healthy, but they also help rebalance things when they’re out of whack. Specifically, probiotics boost the healthy bacteria in the gut and are a well-known therapy for diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset.

Probiotics normalize the conditions in the intestines by changing the acidity of the digestive tract and releasing shortchain fatty acids (postbiotics). Probiotics also help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria by competing for the same nutrients and resources. Boosting the populations of helpful bacteria limits the nutrients available for the bad bacteria and reduces their numbers to levels that your dog can tolerate better. Don’t forget the prebiotics; they feed those beneficial probiotics to help them thrive. Quick tip: look for a supplement that contains both pre and probiotics together!

It’s important to look for probiotics for dogs with many different strains and high colonyforming units. I recommend 12–14 strains and at least 30 billion CFU. I also highly recommend rotating in species-specific probiotics because they’re proven to survive the environment in a dog’s gut and can offer unique postbiotic benefits.

#4 SLIPPERY ELM

The slippery elm is a large, deciduous tree native to Eastern North America. When you mix the bark with water, it creates a sticky gel-like substance known as mucilage.

When your dog ingests the bark and it makes its way through the body, it comes into contact with water. The mucilage forms and coats the inside of the digestive tract, lubricating and helping promote mucous secretions. This helps reduce the inflammation within the digestive tract that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, or gastric reflux.

Research supports its use. A 2013 study on the management of canine and feline vomiting and diarrhea tested the efficacy of slippery elm in a veterinary setting. 82 percent of the dogs with vomiting and 93 percent of the dogs with diarrhea responded within two days or four doses!

Buy slippery elm for dogs as a supplement and follow the directions. Typically, dosage guidelines go by weight, and recommendations are 100 milligrams per 10 pounds, two to four times daily. Mix it into your dog’s regular food or blend it into a little bit of plain kefir or gentle bone broth.

#5 HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathic Nux Vomica is very often indicated for digestive upset, from vomiting to diarrhea. Try a 30C potency and give it every eight to 12 hours, three times. If your dog will take the pellets by mouth, that’s an easy way to do it.

Dogs even have this perfect little pocket just inside their cheek that you can pop the remedy into. If not, stir a few pellets into a small cup of water and give approximately three tablespoons to your pup.

At the end, add any additional ingredients you like (ex. dog-safe vegetables), and simmer for about 30 minutes more. ach Tuesday afternoon, Kim McIntyre and his Lab, Lucas, leave their Murfreesboro, TN, home, and head to the local library for one-on-one reading sessions with kids. The second through fourth-grade students, self-conscious about their skills, read while petting the calm pup who rests on a blanket beside them.

Meanwhile, in Goffstown, NH, middle school counselor Jessica Jordan brings her Finnish Lapphund, Ilo, to work with her on Fridays to spend time with students. The duo also visit a local hospital on Sundays.

McIntyre, Jordan, and their dogs are among the thousands of therapy animal teams in the U.S. that provide comfort and support to patients, students, and seniors in their communities.

A poll by the American Psychiatric Association suggests that 86 percent of companion animal guardians believe their animals positively impact their mental health; 69 percent believe their companion animals reduce stress and anxiety, and 66 percent say they are a calming presence. It’s clear that interactions with furry friends can affect not only our lives but others as well.

McIntyre recalls visiting a patient at a physical rehab center with his first therapy dog, Zeke. The patient was nonverbal, and her left arm and leg were immobile. Over the next few months, McIntyre and Zeke visited a couple of times a week, until one day, the animal therapy team approached the woman’s bed, and she motioned them to stop.

For almost a minute, they watched her struggle to lift her torso. She reached down, dragged her legs to hang over the side of the bed, and then pushed herself with her good arm to a sitting position.

Could Your Dog be a Therapy Animal?

Becoming a therapy animal team is a good way to connect with your dog, meet others, and give back to your community.

But before you and your pup join forces and volunteer, consider these tips.

Evaluate Your Dog’s Temperament Your dog may act

one way at home but entirely differently while out. Do they approach strangers or shy away when someone walks by?

Your dog will need to act consistently, especially when visiting a facility such as a nursing home or a hospital.

“It’s about how your dog reacts to strangers from diverse backgrounds and how they also operate in strange environments,” says Jesse Haas, Senior National Director of the Therapy Animal Program for Pet Partners. “They have to be comfortable in a variety of settings, with a variety of people.”

Starting when Ilo was a puppy, Jordan knew that his temperament was perfect for being a therapy dog. “He was so sweet, simple, and gentle,” she says.

“He made eye contact, and if people kept walking, his body kind of shrunk like ‘Oh, they didn’t say hi.’”

Be Able to Read Your Dog’s Cues People don’t always

understand how stressful it can be for a dog to be surrounded by people they’ve never met. As a handler, your job will be to monitor your pet’s behaviour and posture closely.

“Pacing, fidgeting, changing their posture (ears held back, tail tucked, crouching), not following instructions as they have been trained to, not interacting with people, and whining, as if to say, “Let’s go home,” are all signs that the dog has had enough, and it’s time to go home,” says Mary Burch, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist and Director of the American Kennel Club’s Therapy Dog Program.

Think About Your Interpersonal Skills Do you have trouble striking up a conversation with someone? Do you get nervous around people you don’t know? Not only does your companion need to be comfortable in a range of settings, but so do you.

After completing online training, therapy teams are tested in person. “If you don't have a handler who knows how to interact with the public and, more importantly, facilitate interactions between the clients and the dog,

may cause you to pause your therapy animal team plans until they’re addressed. First, is jumping up on people while greeting them. Second is grabbing food, including any spilled on the floor, and third is being overly wound up and not responding to a cue to “settle.”

You’re working together.” then the team won’t pass,” says Haas. “So we always put as much emphasis on the human end of the leash as we do on the animals themselves.” She stresses that therapy animal visits aren’t just about petting an animal for a dopamine rush; it’s often about the humans interacting and bonding in the presence of a dog.

Training Your Dog for Therapy Dog Screening

Your companion animal may have perfected basic skills like sit, stay, come, and heel, but there are other commands they’ll need to know to pass a therapy dog screening. Not being bothered by wheelchairs and walkers, remaining calm when hearing a loud noise behind them, and passing another dog without reacting are a few of the skills your dog will need to demonstrate while testing.

Burch says that dogs should ideally begin basic training involving socialization around other animals and people and exposure to various sounds, moving objects, and other stimuli as puppies. When the puppy is a little older, classes that teach good manners, like the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen training, are helpful.

Your dog may not be the only one with habits that need adjustment. “A lot of trainers tend to ‘jolly up’ the dog, speaking in a high voice and encouraging the dog to be overthe-top peppy,” says Burch. “Think of the people the dog will be visiting—they may be seniors who are frail or young children who would get frightened by quick, unexpected movements.”

Therapy Animal Organizations It’s not uncommon

for a company, hospital, or senior living facility to require their therapy animal teams to be certified. Between national organizations like Pet Partners, Therapy Dogs International (TDI), Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD), and local groups, you should be able to find one that’s a good fit for you. These organizations offer support and education to new and longtime teams. They certify handlers and their dogs, provide education, and share opportunities to volunteer. Some offer insurance at no extra charge as long as you complete their training and evaluation.

While you may be 99 percent sure your dog won’t bite anyone, there’s always a chance they could under duress. Or they may accidentally scratch a patient or knock someone over.

Whether you adopt a puppy and start training them early or partner with your current dog, you two may make the ideal duo to brighten someone’s day. “There’s a reason we call it a therapy animal team,” says Haas. “That teamwork has to be there at all times. You’re working together.” ■

STUDY FROM KYOTO UNIVERSITY found that dogs are able to judge human competence—and that female dogs are significantly better at it than their male counterparts.

Female dogs proved to be the most judgmental, preferring the most competent humans.

Researchers conducted an experiment in which dogs watched two people attempt to open containers of food, one person successfully, the other struggling.

Hitomi Chijiiwa, the lead author of the study, stated that their findings show dogs can identify human competence, and that female dogs are best at judging our abilities and adjusting their behaviour accordingly. ■

he Bearded Collie—affectionately known as the “Beardie”—is a charismatic dog with a big, bouncy personality and a distinctive look. With that flowing coat and facial hair resembling a beard, this breed is a head-turner!

Early Origins

We can trace the Beardie’s roots to the Scottish Highlands, where they were bred to herd sheep and cattle. But the breed’s earliest history stretches far across Europe.

It’s believed that the Bearded Collie is the result of crossbreeding between Polish Lowland Sheepdogs and local Scottish dogs, dating back to the 1500s. By the 1600s, the breed’s type and appearance were established.

At Work in the Highlands

The Beardie’s intelligence, agility, and incredible stamina made them a natural fit for herding livestock over rocky hills and through heavy rains. Not only were they quick learners, but Beardies were also very adaptable and nimble— something tremendously useful on terrain with everything from wide pastures to narrow, steep paths, not to mention treacherous cliffs. Prized as they were for their skills and athleticism, it’s important to note that these dogs were also treasured by Shepherds as loyal family companions.

Then, everything changed. The breed’s popularity started to plummet—the result of a few factors. First, farming practices

shifted, and machines started to replace the need for working dogs.

Second, as part of the trend towards urbanization, throngs of people moved from rural areas into urban centres in search of work. Many of the traditional farming communities where the Bearded Collie had thrived either shrank or disappeared. And finally, the Border Collie had started to gain quite a lot of popularity, owing to their specialized herding abilities. The Bearded Collie had shifted from being a farm staple to a rarity.

Fortunately, a group of dedicated fanciers intervened. G. Olive Wilson is often credited as the reason the breed survived. She was absolutely besotted

by Beardies and refused to see the breed vanish. She created a breeding program that would ultimately shape the Beardie we know today. Through selective breeding, the Beardie’s herding abilities remained intact, while their lovable temperament as a family pet was enhanced. The idea was to broaden the appeal of the Bearded Collie beyond just working farms and make them a popular choice for families.

The efforts paid off, and the Scottish working dog with a heart of gold persevered—and ultimately thrived.

Coming to America

The first Bearded Collie arrived in North America in the late 1950s, and breeding programs were established in

the late 1960s. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1976.

The Bearded Collie Look The Bearded Collie is a medium-sized dog weighing 45-55 pounds. The AKC Standard notes that they stand 20-22 inches tall at the withers and have a graceful physique. That long, shaggy double coat is accepted in a range of colours, including black, blue, brown, and fawn. The Beardie often has white markings on the face, chest, legs, and the tip of the tail.

Training and Activities

This athletic dog was designed to be versatile, intelligent, and eager to please—a winning combo when it comes to canine training and activities. Can the Beardie be a little bit stubborn? Absolutely. They were bred to be a working dog who could think quickly and independently. Start training a Beardie for good manners and obedience at a very early age.

Beardies can do very well in Obedience, Agility, Flyball, and of course herding trials. They’ve got energy to burn, both mentally and physically. Long daily walks are an absolute minimum for this breed. The more outings and activities, the better.

Profile: The Bearded Collie

It’s no surprise that the trade-off to that long, flowing coat is high maintenance grooming. Beauty takes work, you know!

Daily brushing is strictly necessary to prevent mats, and you’ll need to incorporate regular baths and “blow outs,” too.

The Beardie doesn’t shed as much as some other breeds, but they do lose hair, particularly during seasonal changes.

Health-wise, the Bearded Collie is a hearty breed. As with any purebred dog, there are some genetic disorders to consider, so if you’re working with a breeder, it’s important that they’re dedicated to the good health and temperament of their dogs.

While Bearded Collies still can and do work on farms, today most spend their lives as cherished family pets.

I owe my love of dogs to my greatgreat-Uncle Ivor, who had captained a merchant ship in the East Indies during the late 1800s. An old velvet-covered family album passed down through generations contains images from his travels—people, places, and notably, a Pomeranian that appears to smoke a pipe. The dog sat calmly, almost regally it seems, on a satin-covered table in a photographer’s studio noted as “Chancellor, 55 Lower Sackville St, Dublin.” Now, the portrait of the smoking Pomeranian, still unidentified, sits on our mantel, and is one of my favourite ancestors. —C.S. I had a colon surgery, followed by chemotherapy. Wet Noses

Yes, dogs do dream. Scientists have found that the same areas of the brain that light up for humans when we dream, also light up in dogs. Canine sleep cycles, including REM sleep, are very similar to humans, suggesting they experience dreams just as we do and may even dream about their day’s events, as well as their likes, dislikes, and fears.

Dogs Are Not Colour Blind

Dogs Can Sense Time Dogs have a sense of time, but not in the same way humans do. Rather than understanding time in an abstract sense, they rely on routines, daily patterns, and heightened senses like smell and hearing to anticipate events, like mealtime, or your return.

It is a myth that dogs see everything in black and white.

Dogs have dichromatic vision: they recognize colours such as blue, green-yellow, yellow, and various shades of gray. Dogs do not see red or green tones, similar to humans with red-green colour blindness.

Three Eyelids Dogs have three eyelids, with the third one, called the “haw” or nictitating membrane, helping to protect and lubricate the eye. The eyes of dogs (and cats) also contain a special reflective layer behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum that enhances night vision.

Dogs are Right or Left Pawed Just like humans, dogs can have a preferred paw, with studies showing that a significant percentage of dogs favour one paw over the other.
