This year, we have embraced a science-aligned goal to reduce our direct and energy-related greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 42% by the year 2032. We have also committed to tracking and reducing our indirect Scope 3 emissions within the same timeframe. This goal demonstrates our dedication to a sustainable future and our alignment with global climate change mitigation efforts. Crucially, it underscores our resolve to assist our customers in reaching their environmental targets as well. Taking Climate Action Establishing Our Sustainability Management and Reporting Framework

Improving Supply Chains

In 2023, we established a strategic framework and steering committee to guide our existing and future environmental goals. Through the support of the committee, we determined our organizational and operational boundaries to consolidate and report our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions effectively.

Setting these boundaries has allowed us to report our emissions as well as define which emissions sources are tracked and calculated within our operations.

Partnering with the U.S. EPA SmartWay® since 2007, MODE Global brands voluntarily team with the U.S. EPA, which helps companies improve supply chain sustainability by measuring and benchmarking freight transportation operations. Through this partnership, the EPA, and its logistics partners, such as MODE, have helped other companies save fuel, lower costs, and reduce negative environmental impacts across the supply chain.

To remain at the forefront of responsible transportation and logistics, we must continue to monitor and evaluate upcoming environmental regulations. As federal and state regulators have begun proposing new GHG disclosure requirements, such as the proposed rulemaking by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (U.S. SEC), we understand the importance of remaining compliant. Through our efforts in 2023, we continue preparing for potential regulations around climate disclosures and GHG emissions reporting.

Setting Climate Targets In 2023, we set a science-based emissions reduction target aligned with a 1.5ºC pathway. Our targets include Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions, with an absolute reduction target for our Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 2032. Our targets are currently in the process of being validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). SBTi is a highly acclaimed partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature that defines and promotes best practices in emissions reductions and net-zero targets in line with climate science. By pursuing SBTi-approved targets, we strengthen our commitment to emissions reduction and climate action.

In addition to our absolute emissions reduction target for Scopes 1 and 2, we are also committing to tracking and reducing Scope 3 emissions within the same timeframe.

Our GHG Emissions Profile As part of our commitment to transparency, we recognize the importance of calculating our GHG emissions to set meaningful emissions reduction targets and track our progress toward them. As we strive to maintain our stakeholders’ trust, transparency and credibility in our carbon accounting plays a critical role. Accurate carbon accounting drives climate action and resilience by providing data for effective mitigation efforts and adaptation strategies, as well as providing a fundamental step toward aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

MODE has voluntarily disclosed GHG emissions associated with our operational and energy usage (Scope 1 and 2) since 2021.

This year, we updated our calculation methodology to align with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol more closely, as well as estimating our Scope 3 emissions for the first time. We also determined our base year of 2022 for tracking our GHG emissions into the future. In calculating our corporate GHG emissions inventory, MODE followed the guidance outlined by the GHG Protocol. We followed the definitions for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions provided below by the GHG Protocol.

Our Scope 1 and 2 emissions primarily result from on-site natural gas combustion and other consumed electricity from 16 of our operating facilities, including our headquarters, data centers, and offices.

In accordance with the GHG Protocol, Scope 3 emissions are separated into 15 different categories. We evaluated the relevancy of each category and determined that seven of the 15 categories were relevant to our organization: purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, business travel, and employee commuting.

Our energy consumption primarily results from our facilities operation, which includes on-site natural gas combustion and purchased electricity from 16 of our operating facilities, including our headquarters, data centers, and offices. MODE is a premier, non-asset, multi-modal brokerage provider that leverages its strengths in intermodal, proprietary technology, and scale to serve a diverse set of stakeholders. Due to the nature of our business, we do not directly consume fuel that was used in business operations.

Reducing Our GHG Emissions In 2023, we began developing our emissions reduction roadmap which details measurable steps to achieve our science-based targets. We have listed below the emissions reduction activities that we aim to implement to support the achievement of our stated goals.

We are also exploring how our carriers could use of lowcarbon alternative fuels, as it is imperative to further reduce emissions and achieve our sustainability ambitions, including examining the feasibility of adopting suitable alternative fuels within our operations and value chain.

Operating Efficiently

Innovating Toward a Low-carbon Future

We strive to minimize our energy consumption by adopting energy-efficient improvements across our facilities. We periodically implement energy efficiency technologies in our facilities such as LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances, where feasible. These efforts reduce our energy demands and support further reduction of our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

At MODE, we focus on maximizing efficiency for our customers through intermodal strategies – which can lead to significant reductions in emissions. We promote the benefits of multimodal transportation, which encourages our customers to use environmentally friendly transportation options like rail or maritime for long-haul shipping. By partnering with providers that offer intermodal capabilities, customers can leverage the reduced carbon emissions associated with these modes of transportation.

Energy Efficiency

Renewable Energy and Alternative Fuel The electricity we purchase to power our facilities is responsible for our Scope 2 emissions. With the advancement in renewable energy production and technology, we are evaluating options that will support the transition to a lowcarbon future. We are assessing which renewable energy sources are feasible based on the locations of our operations and how we might introduce them into our energy mix. These renewable energy options include purchasing green power from local utilities, entering into power-purchase agreements (PPAs) or virtual power-purchase agreements (VPPAs), and the deployment of on-site renewable energy.

Intermodal Transportation

Route Optimization and Efficiency Improvements As an EPA SmartWay Partner since 2007, we have gained significant expertise and experience in supply chain sustainability. As one of the largest, U.S.-based intermodal thirdparty logistics providers, we have experience optimizing routes to further reduce carbon footprint. Through order consolidation, route/asset optimization, and relocating inventory to allow more efficient routes for co-loading, we have reduced empty miles and avoided “deadhead” runs. We also utilize vendors and suppliers who are committed to sustainability initiatives and utilizing electric vehicles within their fleet as a step to reduce emissions.

Technological Innovations We embrace innovative technology to enhance our sustainability efforts, leveraging data analytics and automation in an effort to optimize logistics, reduce emissions, and improve efficiency. Improvements in technology can lead to systemic changes, resulting in benefits for our customers and the environment.

We are also researching and developing innovative solutions that drive the logistics industry toward greater sustainability and environmental responsibility, such as improved data collection and telematics.

Reducing Value Chain Emissions

Positively Impacting the Environment

Along with our commitment to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions through energy management and renewable energy procurement options, we strive to reduce emissions from our value chain within the same timeframe. We plan to systematically reduce our own Scope 3 emissions by helping our suppliers and business partners make similar improvements in their emissions profiles.

We acknowledge that the environmental challenges our world is facing extend beyond GHG emissions and encompass various other impacts that our operations have on the environment.

It is important for us to proactively manage and mitigate these diverse environmental impacts, and we aim to reduce waste throughout our operations where feasible. We actively work to reduce waste by implementing waste reduction and recycling programs. Advancing Climate Disclosure and Reporting Our climate disclosures demonstrate our commitment to managing and addressing the impacts of climate change. We are committed to reporting and communicating our actions through CDP Climate Change, EcoVadis, and our annual sustainability report. This year marked the first time MODE Global submitted to CDP, furthering our transparency to stakeholders around climate risks and management. We also responded to the growing interest in submitting an EcoVadis questionnaire. We intend to submit responses to both CDP and EcoVadis on an annual basis, aiming to continuously improve our submissions.

EcoVadis CDP Climate Change In answering CDP's Climate Change survey, we focus on gathering and analyzing data on our GHG emissions, energy use, climate-related risks and opportunities, and our targets and business strategy to adapt to a low-carbon future. As CDP is considered the gold standard of corporate sustainability and plays a crucial role in driving corporate climate action, we aim to continuously improve our answers to reflect the efforts and progress we make.

Through EcoVadis, we gather and report our sustainability efforts, including environmental impact, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. EcoVadis has a comprehensive rating system, which allows us to evaluate our sustainability strategy and enhance our transparency.

Corporate Involvement in United Way: Engaging with United Way, we support initiatives addressing social issues like poverty and domestic violence. Our participation in a towel drive benefited Agape Resource & Assistance, aiding women and children victims of domestic abuse in rebuilding their lives.

This drive provided more than 150 towels to the current and future families whom Agape supports. We also organized a back-to-school drive and were able to provide supplies to over 150 students.

Working to Combat Human Trafficking: In collaboration with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), we actively contribute to the mission of educating transportation workers to combat human trafficking. Our efforts include corporate training and championing updates to our carrier onboarding system, each of which has raised awareness and contributed to addressing this important global issue.

Other Community Initiatives: From organizing a successful holiday canned food drive for the North Texas Food Bank to working to support those impacted by hurricanes, we actively support local communities. Specifically in Dallas, Texas, we have had the pleasure of teaming up with The Stewpot to help feed those experiencing homelessness and give back to the community.

Our latest data shows that 100% of employees completed compliance training in 2023, covering professional conduct, anti-bribery, ethical leadership, and more. New hires receive training within 60 days and a compliance gift to promote awareness.
