How do we even begin to summarize 2020 so far?

It’s been a year of fear, of uncertainty, of tumultuous change. It has also been a year of reexamining, of looking inward, of asking ourselves what is important, and of putting that knowledge into action.

The sewing community has always been a source of connection, but now it is a virtual lifeline during these months of isolation. We are grateful to be a part of this community. We find solace here, and inspiration to do better. We are proud to stand alongside you, finding ways to move forward together.

Introducing Ruby Star Society: Projects With Purpose, an ongoing series designed to fundraise for a better world.

First in the series, the Pep Talk Panel includes a variety of shapes filled with encouraging reminders. Full instructions are included to make them into banners, pennants, pillows and a tote, but you can also use them in quilts or any other project you can dream up.

For every Pep Talk Panel sold, $5 will be donated to The Loveland Foundation. The Loveland Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing healing and support through therapy. They are committed to showing up for communities of color in unique and powerful ways, with a particular focus on Black women and girls. Learn more at thelovelandfoundation.org.

We would also love to encourage any stockists of the Pep Talk Panel to use the panel sales as an opportunity to do their own charitable fundraising, and consider donating some of their margin to The Loveland Foundation or a nonprofit of their choice.

Sarah Watts was inspired by all things fiber arts when creating Purl. She imagined a cozy afternoon in a favorite chair, sipping a steaming cup of tea and working on her latest yarn endeavor. Sarah created one of her popular panels (see pages 12-13) as a focal piece and added lots of sweet supporting prints. ‘Charms’ features small motifs that can easily be cut apart and used as project labels.

Two rayons and three cotton-linen canvases round out the group.

While designing Heirloom, Alexia Marcelle Abegg found inspiration in the fabrics of vintage heirloom quilts. She wanted to create her own versions of the small scale prints with single color backgrounds, and her hand carved motifs sit beautifully and quietly together in a refreshed sunrise palette. A quilt-inspired canvas print completes the collection. Alexia also added six new colors to her popular Add It Up basic spectrum, which can be mixed into Heirloom projects but also stand strongly as their own mini color group.

Warp & Weft Heirloom came to be when Alexia Marcelle Abegg set out to create a follow up collection to her very popular first yarn-dyed woven group, Warp & Weft.

Warp & Weft Heirloom complements and expands upon her original color palette and adds to her library of woven textures. While creating this group, Alexia thought of traveling to the beach - vintage striped towels, breezy coverups, even woven beach chairs - and that feeling you get when you can’t quite see the ocean yet but you know you’re close. Alexia brought back her heavier Chore Coat cotton in a variety of new patterns - Linework Heavyweight, Chore Coat Stripe, and Woven Texture Stripe are all the same thick but drapey, slubby soft cotton fabric as Chore Coat from Warp & Weft. The rest of the fabrics in this group are lighter shirting weight, gorgeous as garments, quilts, and home dec projects.

PANEL BY MELODY MILLER From her first fabric collection Ruby Star Rising in 2010 to Ruby Star Society today, this 40-block panel celebrates 10 years of fabric designs by Melody Miller.

She has chosen some of her favorite and most popular motifs, from her typewriter and telephone designs of a decade ago to the recent florals that inspired her Rise and Stay Gold collections.

Panel measures 44” x 72”. Selvage indicates where to cut panel. Individual blocks trim to 81/2” x 81/2” unfinished.
