Meet Moda's New Designer! I began my graphic design career in the advertising industry where my passion for vintage promotional art and typography began. Through the years I have collected both richlydesigned and modestly-composed printed paper items referred to as ephemera. As an artist and crafter I find vintage ephemera creates fun, attention-getting components in my collage work. As an avid flea market shopper I have discovered and collected a vast amount of ephemera over the years such as floral trade cards, handwritten postcards, perforated trading stamps, and ingredient-stained recipe cards. Flea market shopping has also yielded many other exciting finds for decorating and crafting–delightful old photos, paint by number paintings, vintage quilting and needlework textiles, and delightful sewing notions. I am proud to present my favorite, visually-rich flea market finds mixed and designed into beautiful Moda Fabrics.

Cowboy lifestyle. When we were asked to design a modern western collection, it was music to our ears. After all, our everyday life revolves around cattle, farmland and a new obsession with the television show Yellowstone. As we starting working on Branded, our first objective was to ask our Sweetwater fans to submit names of ranches and farms. The text print for this collection includes every one of the names we received – there were hundreds! Our second goal was to capture the rugged, distressed and slightly faded feel that is the everyday lifestyle of cowboys. The colors? We’re introducing a new color to our palette – a dark, almost teal, shade of blue that blends perfectly with our signature red, black and khaki. To complete the Branded collection, there are two new Printworks Sampler panels that are ideally suited for banners, bags and pillows. Printworks Branded – be sure to take a look.

Who knew a broken box would be the perfect inspiration for a collection of fabric. Let me explain...I was moving boxes of papers, vintage fabric swatches and miscellaneous stuff out of my office to make way for a KT Quilt Shop expansion. About two-thirds of the way up the 26 steps to my new office, the bottom fell out of the box and the contents slid down the stairs. As I was picking up and sorting through the mess, I discovered a set of holiday stencils. They were dated 1929 and were bought in a box of “good junk� at an auction. One of the stencils was a delightful candy cane cutout with holly leaves, berries and a bow. It was the perfect beginning for a Christmas collection. I added designs that reminded me of vintage wrapping paper to complete the look. I hope you enjoy this cheerful collection as much as I have to create your own Sweet Holly Christmas.

There is frost on the windows and a fire in the fireplace, brown-paper packages under a tree sparkling with lights, cups filled with steaming hot cider and a holiday playlist of carols streaming from the mini wireless speakers. The winter of 1968 left an indelible mark on my soul. Growing up we would get a couple of inches of snow that would last a day of two and then melt away too soon. But that all changed when I was eight years old. That was the winter of the “big snow storm”. In my memory, there had to have been at least 6 feet of powdery bliss, though it must be said that I was still pretty small. However much there really was, I know it lasted long enough for us to sled, build forts, have snowball fights and yes, build a fabulous snowman. While he had a hat on his head and a scarf on his neck, he was wasn’t dressed quite to manner I would have liked. If I’d had my way, my snowy friend would have been decked out in winter gear from head to toe! So when as I drew the artwork for Snowbound, that is exactly what I did! My childhood friends have come to life – just as I imaged they should be done long, long ago.

The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year. Of course, I think I say that when each season returns‌ winter, spring, summer, fall. I love them all. Still, there is something special about winter when a fresh blanket of snow quietly envelops the dark gray trees and branches. Holliberry begins with that imagery – the snowy whites and grays of freshly fallen snow, clouds, and trees. Against that backdrop, I added the brightly hued reds and greens of the season with holly, berries, poinsettias, and pine. This collection includes basic prints that mix with other collections as well as sweet holiday florals. You know my love of stripes so I had to have a perfect candy cane stripe to use for all of those quilt bindings. I hope Holliberry invites you to reminisce about holidays past and cherish those to come. Holiday wishes from my family to yours.
