A Life Gathered: Jen Kingwell's Approach to Quiltmaking
For Jen Kingwell, quilting has always been about connection — to family, to craft, to community. Long before she became a beloved designer for Moda Fabrics, Jen was a farm girl in rural Victoria, Australia, collecting fabric scraps from her neighbor’s sewing room to make doll-sized curtains and bedding. That early love of making shaped everything that followed.
While studying to become a nurse, Jen learned English Paper Piecing from the women in her dormitory. That simple act of hand stitching became a lifelong anchor. She went on to own a quilt shop for many years, and it was during that time, after encouragement from Sue Spargo, that she took a leap and
attended her first Quilt Market — a decision that changed her life.
Today, Jen travels the world teaching her techniques in hand piecing, quilting, and appliqué. Her work is instantly recognizable: modern and scrappy, but rooted in vintage sensibilities. Her collections and patterns blend history with playfulness — a signature she’s built over years of thoughtful design.
A Sweet Twist on Tradition
When Jen began designing fabric, she faced a challenge: how to achieve her eclectic, scrappy look within a single collection. Her solution was what she calls “Lollies” — multi-panel prints that
include eight different designs across the width of fabric. “I love creating an eclectic mix of print and color on each SKU,” she says. These fabrics have since become fan favorites and the cornerstone of her new collections, Gathered Lollies and Gathered Bonbons.
The prints tie into her new book, Gathered, which follows her bestselling Quilt Recipes. Where the first book blended family recipes with quilt patterns, Gathered is inspired by friends, vintage quilts, and home. One print features carrots from a beloved carrot cake recipe, another nods to jam drop cookies. “I wanted to recreate the feel of quilts I made from my own stash — but with original prints,” Jen explains. Stitching the Past to the Present
Jen’s quilting style celebrates imperfection, intuition, and joy. She draws inspiration from antique fabrics and natural surroundings, infusing them with warmth and modern color. “Inspiration is everywhere,” she says. “I love putting a modern twist on old prints from the 1800s.”
As she looks to 2026, Jen’s calendar is already full — with teaching in the U.S. and Europe, trade shows, and more fabric collections in the works. But no matter how full her schedule becomes, her creative philosophy remains simple: keep it joyful, keep it handmade, and keep it gathered.

Nature’s Sketchbook is a collection straight from my sketchbook, filled with scribbled ideas, quick doodles, and little moments captured on paper. Some sketches are truly messy, but it’s fascinating to see them transform into beautiful patterns and fabrics.
Inspired by walks through the forest, pockets full of leaves and acorns, and those fleeting moments when I have a minute to catch an idea, whether at the playground, the gym, or in a quiet moment with a cup of tea, this collection offers a glimpse into my sketchbook world.

As some of you might already know, autumn is the season I look forward to all year long and is my favorite for so many different reasons, both personal and for its color palette. For me autumn means a more inward pace, filled with traditions, sights of glorious falling leaves and the smells of the family kitchen. And the colors… butterscotch and cinnamon on the hearth, olives and golds in the garden, soft neutrals in the home.

Miss Mollie. Her story is similar to other women who followed her husband’s dream of striking it rich, mining for gold in the Colorado Rockies in the mid 1800’s. Mollie Dorsey 1838-1915, was far more practical than husband to be Byron Sanford, insisting on a 3 year engagement so they could save earnings for a good start. He a blacksmith and she a seamstress, made a good wage in Nebraska City, but one bad venture after another, once married in 1859, Pike’s Peak fever lured By to the mountain camps to try his luck.
Mollie tired of being left alone, bought a wagon and drove herself to join him in Colorado. At the different camps, often the only female, she cooked, sewed and took in laundry, lived in shanties, boarding houses, tents, then later, a soldiers barracks when By joined the Union Army. Mollie’s sewing skills saw her through. Gold played out, By tried ranching but at last they, with two young children, settled in Denver where By took a good, steady job with the Denver Mint.

Patina is a natural creation, sometimes formed on beautiful metals. It can be the blue-green verdigris pigment or patina that forms naturally on copper, brass, and bronze surfaces due to oxidation. It can be the color of the rust forming on iron, the tarnish on silver, or the sanded surface of driftwood. The formation of a patina of nature is a slow and tranquil process, never rushed. Place beautiful designs over the colors of patina, and you have my inspiration for Tranquil Patina. I adore the effects of nature.

I’m inspired by colors that make me happy, shapes that I find interesting and fabrics that can move in many different creative directions.
As a quilter, I love to design hard-working prints that can be mixed and matched in all kinds of ways. Throughout the development of a collection, I’m moving pieces around constantly to see how they can work together. My favorite pieces are those that can perform many roles in a project—from being able to support something else, to being the star player.
Carolyn Friedlander is an artist specializing in modern fabric designs, quilting and sewing patterns, and quilt making with intention.
Carolyn grew up on a cattle and citrus ranch in Lake Wales, Florida, where she spent most of her free time immersed in drawing, painting, and sewing. She earned a B.A. in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. After a stint in architecture, Carolyn sought a different occupation that would allow her to be wildly creative and work with her hands. Though she had long known how to sew, she quickly recognized quilting as a new passion and set out to learn everything she could about the craft. She was drawn to bright and bold fabrics and saw a need for clean, modern patterns. In 2010, she founded her business, Carolyn Friedlander LLC.
Today Carolyn is an active presence, partnering with industry leaders to reach quilters worldwide. In addition to her full line of quilt patterns, her book, Savor Each Stitch: Studio Quilting With Mindful Design, was published in 2014.
Memento is a special collection that has been percolating in my mind for a while as I took some time away from designing fabric. It celebrates many reminders and keepsakes during this time. It’s a collection about hope. It’s about finding your creative energy, connecting with and seeing your own light. The shapes and motifs are derived from cherished shapes I encounter everyday as well as things that remind me of the love of others and trying something new. Memento includes some familiar favorites as well. I’m excited about the full range of color, the variety of shapes and the personal hand in each of the prints. I see this collection serving a range of quilt projects, and I am especially excited to have some prints on canvas to expand the possibilities as well.

Get into the mellow mood of LoFi, my newest linen collection! Working with linen takes me back to my roots as a designer, as I got my start as a blogger at I Heart Linen where I posted my favorite projects using linen. LoFi blends soft, low-volume prints with pops of neon that keep the beat alive.
I’m always hopping from genre to genre when I listen to music, but when I need a creative groove, I like to play LoFi in the background. That balance of chill and bright at the same time felt like the perfect name for this collection. Soothing, surprising, and full of personality!

This collection is even better than solids for supporting all of our Ruby Star Society collections.
