For half a century, United Notions and Moda Fabrics, have been at the heart of the quilting world. From a one-man operation in Dallas to a global leader in fabric and design, Moda’s story is one of vision, creativity, generosity, and enduring commitment to independent quilt shops.
A Humble Start, A Lasting Legacy
The story begins in 1975, when Mark Dunn, at just 29 years old, founded United Notions in Dallas, Texas. Working alongside his father in the notions trade had sparked his love for the business, but striking out on his own gave Mark the chance to shape the quilting industry in bold new ways. What started as a modest warehouse filled with needles, threads, and tools quickly grew into a wholesale powerhouse. By 1991, Mark expanded into fabric design with the launch of Moda Fabrics, a name that today is synonymous with innovation and quality.
Sales Roots & Loyalty
In the early years, Mark wore every hat: salesman by morning, distributor by afternoon. He would personally write customer orders, pull and pack the goods, and ship them out of his Dallas warehouse the same day. That hands-on experience taught him the value of accurate numbering systems and inventory management, but it also gave him something even more lasting—an unshakable appreciation for the role of the salesperson.
To this day, Mark’s loyalty to his sales team remains one of Moda’s cornerstones. He knows firsthand the challenges and opportunities of being on the front lines with customers, and he continues to invest in and champion the work of sales professionals across the company.
The Precut Revolution & Innovation in Design
One of Moda’s greatest contributions to quilting was the introduction of precuts. Products like Jelly Rolls®, Layer Cakes®, Dessert Rolls® and Charm Packs made quilting more approachable for beginners while opening creative new possibilities for experienced makers. This idea revolutionized the way quilters buy and use fabric—and cemented Moda’s reputation as an innovator. Moda’s design portfolio continues to thrive through a mix of independent designers and

Family Threads: The Dunn Tradition
Brian Dunn joined the company in 1986, managing operations in Denver before returning to Dallas as VP of Operations. Mark’s youngest son Josh Dunn, joined in 2011 and is now the VP of Development managing many aspects of the business. Mark’s granddaughter, Megan Dunn joined the design team in 2021. Together, the Dunn family continues to guide Moda with the same values of creativity, service, and community that Mark established fifty years ago.

Elizabeth Hartman is a quilter, pattern designer, and fan of color from Portland, Oregon. After teaching herself to quilt in 1999, she was hooked and has been making quilts ever since. For Elizabeth, quiltmaking is the perfect combination of creativity and technical challenge, all in the service of making a useful object.
In 2014, Elizabeth founded her company, Patterns by Elizabeth Hartman, through which she has published more than 80 pictorial quilt patterns, mostly with plant and animal motifs. Elizabeth’s goal is to create fabric and patterns that celebrate color, fit into a modern home, and make you smile.

Fruit Salad is my latest collection with Moda Fabrics, and it’s my favorite collection to date! Inspired by the joy of bright, sun-ripened fruit and the carefree days of warm weather sewing, Fruit Salad is a playful mix of color, whimsy, and nostalgia.
This collection is bursting with juicy hues…think strawberry reds, lemony yellows, peachy corals, zesty oranges, and lime greens. I’ve added a brand new emerald green color to the mix. It’s a rich, vibrant shade that adds beautiful depth to the palette and plays so nicely with all the fruity brights. There’s also a splash of blueberry and raspberry to round it all out. Each color feels like a spoonful of sunshine.

Have you ever seen the Northern Lights? I hadn’t—until one quiet night, when my mom was visiting. She wasn’t feeling her best, but I convinced her to hop in the van with me around 11pm, chasing the chance of something rare and beautiful. We drove out past the city lights, guided only by hope and a few friends’ posts saying the aurora was visible.

Seven years ago I decided I would really love some company while I sew. So we checked with local rescues in our area and found the sweetest little kitten friend for me, Cosmo. He was so delightful to have around that we started fostering other sweet little kitties too. We've fostered for several years and many kittens have come and gone, all except one, a very shy little guy we named Stitch. Stitch is scared of most things, but he loves to spend time in my sewing room, prefers sleeping on quilts, and always keeps me and Cosmo company while I sew. My sewing room is without a doubt Stitch’s favorite spot.
Five years later we added to our kitty crew when a one week old tiny gray and white kitten was found on his own. We fell in love immediately and sure enough, Georgie joined our family. Three little cats. This collection pays homage to my favorite furry friends and those wonderful days together in my sewing room. It has everything from beautiful vintage florals to perfect dots, simple stripes and delightful busy little prints, all in the sweetest, soft colors. And of course a kitten or two mixed in for good measure. For Cosmo and Stitch and now Georgie. We make a pretty good team, me and these three little cats. I don’t know how I ever sewed without them.

There is something about the colors of the garden and all the flowers and lush greenery toward the end of the summer that are so full of saturated & soft beauty. It is my favorite time of the summer garden and these colors, prints and patterns are my vision of that garden created in fabric. All of the colors are warm, soft and vibrant at the same time, the patterns are floral and comfortable, awash in the golden hour of a late summer afternoon. The feel is definitely a vintage vibe with colors like clover, daisy, persimmon, sunflower and lilac. Jess Meyer is a surface pattern designer, illustrator, and creative educator based in a small coastal town in South Africa, where she runs her studio from a sun-drenched corner of a farmhouse shared with her husband and young daughter.
Taught to paint by one grandmother and raised with a love of gardens and flowers by the other, Jess carries a generational legacy of creativity with a deep love for storytelling through art and making with her hands. After earning her Fine Art Honours degree in Printmaking, she taught herself digital design and began licensing her work, blending traditional techniques with a passion for crafting modern heirlooms.
In 2015, she started Watercolour Heart as a side hustle to cover the cost of art supplies. Today, it's a flourishing studio known for its sophisticated colour palettes, whimsical florals, and heartfelt collections that invite a sense of celebration into the everyday. Jess has collaborated with an array of brands in home décor, stationery, wallpaper, children’s products and now finds a creative home designing fabric for the Moda family.
With every pattern she paints, Jess seeks to create connection - between artist and maker, story and storyteller. When she’s not designing, you’ll find her making joyful messes with her toddler, experimenting in the kitchen, walking barefoot through the garden, teaching watercolour classes, or mentoring fellow artists through her online courses.

Winters in Ohio can be blustery and cold, but there is a genuine beauty to this season. My favorite days are the ones when the clean, white snow blankets everything in view. It’s always a treat when I am fortunate enough to see a red cardinal flitting from tree to tree or a tiny speck of grey and black where the chickadee roosts.
In “When Snow Falls,” I’ve perched these 2 special birds in warm and cozy winter stockings, hats and mittens to keep them warm. The toasty, textured winter wear is filled with greenery and tied with a jingle bell - adding a little whimsy to the scene. Traditional tones of red and greens have been used in prints and patterns filled with cardinals, chickadees, jingle bells, snowflakes and mistletoe. I had the idea to show some of my childhood winter and Christmas photos to celebrate the release of my first solo holiday collection - in going through them I was struck with just how much my creative universe is rooted in my 70s childhood!
I consider myself very fortunate that I had a loving and secure childhood. My dad was in the army and my mom worked as a secretary on his army base. They met and got married in their early 20s, moving to Northeast Ohio, close to my paternal grandparents. My early Christmastime memories are of building snowmen, 1970s racer-striped snowsuits, and arranging my mom’s Gurley choir singer candles and other assorted knickknacks into a manteltop village.
I must have been about 13 months old in this picture. A Mini-Wheel AND a Fisher-Price airplane - what a haul!
Here I am with my trusty MiniWheel and my favorite winter outfit. No wonder I use the hot pink and mustard, and navy and red combos today!

In 2017, Alexia and Melody paired up to do a Palm Springs inspired collection, Poolside. It had sunglasses, palm trees, and breeze blocks, along with some flowy rayons that were perfect for making poolside caftans.
Recently, they started chatting about doing a follow-up to that collection, and Rashida and Sarah wanted to participate too! The group began by revisiting some of their favorite prints from the first collection, and then added a new version of Rashida's ladies (wearing sunglasses, of course!), along with some vividlycolored tigers from Sarah. This vibrant, summery group also features new colorways of Melody's Daydream Rayon and Sarah's Tigress rayons from 2019 and some palm trees on canvas, perfect for a beach bag or pool tote.
