When Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings first discovered quilting over 30 years ago, it was in the unlikeliest of places—at a YMCA swim lesson. As she watched someone hand stitching, her curiosity was piqued. At the time, she couldn’t have imagined that this simple moment would not only shape her personal journey but also have an impact on the quilting community at large.
Lisa’s path into quilting began with a class at a local quilt shop. “That’s all I really needed,” she says. “I took a [quilt] pattern off the wall and changed it so much that it didn’t even look like the original!” she laughs.
Her quilting business grew "so organically and so fast," she admits, and before long, Lisa was deeply embedded in the quilting community. By 2000, she had already published two books and several patterns,
and even launched a line of hand-dyed wool. It was clear that quilting wasn’t just a hobby—it was her calling.
In September 2003, Lisa faced the loss of her father. This personal milestone became a turning point in her life, one that would change the course of her professional quilting journey. “Life was too short to waste time at a job I didn’t really like,” she reflects. That realization led to a bold decision: In December 2003, she quit her job and, by May 2004, opened her own brick-and-mortar shop.
Her store quickly gained recognition, and in 2005, American Patchwork & Quilting named it one of the Top 10 Shops in the country. That exposure helped propel Lisa and her business to new heights, and she soon found herself part of the Moda family in 2010—"one of the biggest milestones" of her career.
As her business expanded, Lisa opened a retreat center, and through it, she came to fully appreciate the social side of quilting. “I’ve realized that quilting has a whole other side to it,” she says, emphasizing the friendships, collaborations, and inspiration that come from quilting together.
Her retreats are not just about making quilts but about creating lasting bonds. "It’s so much deeper than just how many quilts you can make,” she explains. "It’s about making friends and connections, and how much you can grow by hanging out with like-minded people.” These gatherings provide a sense of community and purpose that extend beyond the craft itself.
Lisa’s fabric collections are a reflection of her love for the art of quilting and the quilters who came before us. Her latest collection, American Gatherings III, is no exception, as it coincides with America’s 250th anniversary. Included in the collection is a large eagle panel, perfect for making Quilts of Valor—an initiative close to Lisa’s heart. She hopes to use this collection for a fundraiser to benefit honor flights, further deepening her commitment to giving back through quilting.
Though Lisa has a long list of ideas for future fabric collections, she admits that her fabric design process is very “in the moment,” using prints from her extensive antique quilt collection as a guide to curate each new line. “Go big or go home” isn’t part of the Primitive Gatherings aesthetic— her fabric collections and patterns are known for their small-scale prints and
Primitive Gatherings shop and retreat center.
piecing. "I like to add something quirky to each collection," she adds, like the handdrawn snowmen in her annual Snowman Gatherings lines.
The journey from her hobby to a thriving business hasn’t been without challenges, but Lisa’s ability to pivot has been key to her success. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she embraced YouTube as a way to connect with her customers and continue growing her business. Meanwhile, her new 23,000-square-foot warehouse, retail store, and studio and 10,000-square-foot retreat center opened in July 2021, offering quilters an expansive space to create and collaborate. “I’m not doing all this by myself,” she’s quick to point out. “We are a family business with 47 employees,” she adds proudly.
In every aspect of her business, whether it’s designing fabric or hosting a retreat, Lisa Bongean embodies the spirit of quilting—not just as a craft, but as a powerful means of connection, creativity, and community. This collection embodies the timeless spirit of America, blending true reds, steadfast blues, and crisp whites in traditional designs that echo the heart of our nation’s history. Each fabric carries the essence of classic Americana — bold stripes, proud stars, and intricate patterns reminiscent of early American textiles — celebrating the enduring values of freedom, bravery, and unity.
As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s fight for independence, these quilts and fabrics serve as more than just artistic expressions; they are a heartfelt tribute to those who sacrificed for our liberty. Every stitch honors the courage of our founding patriots and the unwavering dedication of our veterans — the heroes who have defended freedom through generations.
This collection invites quilters to stitch their own lasting tribute to the American spirit, weaving together past and present in every thread. Whether displayed with pride or gifted with gratitude, these quilts stand as a reminder that freedom is not just won — it’s preserved, cherished, and passed on.

Lyda Rose is the name of the shrub rose I planted last year in my garden. One morning, as I ventured out into the garden, she rewarded me with a beautiful bouquet of white and pink flowers. They say the first blooms are the best, and Lyda was certainly sharing her beauty with me on that special morning. She reminded me of all the wonderful garden surprises to come, and a fabric line was born!
So, welcome to the charming world of Lyda Rose, featuring classic fabrics in a soft, sun-kissed palette of yellow, aqua, pink, cream, and stone. Whether you're stitching a cozy quilt, a charming home décor piece, or a delightful accessory, Lyda Rose will bring warmth, nostalgia, and a dash of countryside magic to your creations. It’s perfect for Easter, spring garden parties, or even a cheerful sunny dress!
You may not know this about me, but I work in a studio with yellow walls. My family room is also painted yellow, and it’s one of my favorite colors. Now, I’ve included yellow in my fabric line! Yellow even takes center stage in my newest quilt, Sunshine Lane. Put a little sunshine in your life! I hope you love this fabric.

Is there a more classic and timeless color combination than blue and white? Not in my eyes. Blue and white is my favorite color combination for everything from quilts to dishes, clothing to home décor. Designing a collection made up simply of beautiful blue and white prints has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, so I’m happy to introduce my newest (and bluest) collection, Blueprint.
Blueprint is made up of dreamy vintage florals, simple dots and plaids, and some of my favorite antique calicos—all in classic blues and whites, of course. Inspired by vintage quilts and favorite dishes, this collection is sure to be one you’ll treasure for years to come.
Where wildflowers grow, the bees will follow. Here's to sundrenched afternoons, meadows bursting with color, and air that hums with the happy buzz of bees. This collection is a love letter to nature's little pollinators, celebrating the beauty of untamed flowers, the delicate geometry of honeycomb, and a sprinkle of playful beekeeping buzzwords. With a palette as warm and golden as real honey, these sunlit hues bring a cheerful glow to any project. Let the sunshine in and get ready to buzz with creativity.

This collection was inspired by the plants growing in my garden and the shapes and symmetry found in nature. The bright colors and bold patterns evoke summer in my mind, and I picture unfurling a quilt on the ground for an outdoor picnic. Each print starts with a hand-carved linocut and embraces the texture and striking shapes that are a signature of printmaking.

Celebrating summertime in the country, homemade strawberry pie, picnics at the lake, small -town parades and lazy afternoons on the porch, Rosie also celebrates the fortitude, creativity, and courage of the women who came before us.

Based on colors like Denim Jeans and Cherry Pie and Whipped Cream, Rosie is a Fig Tree take on a classic small-town summer vibe. I hope you join me there!

Kindness matters. Kindness changes everything! Kindness is always beautiful. Kindness is genuinely an important part of my world, and I am so pleased to introduce this new collection, which illustrates that. Filled with gentle sayings, sweet flowers, and fluttering butterflies, it reminds us all of the beauty of kindness. Soft corals and pinks are mixed with sage and eucalyptus greens to present a fresh floral group with a kind twist. I hope that you enjoy working with this lovely group as much as I enjoyed painting it!
In the Garden is my 25th fabric line with Moda Fabrics. It seemed only fitting to bring to life a sister collection to Prairie, my very first fabric line. I am still pinching myself all these years later that I get to have the fun of creating fabrics that sewists around the world use to make beautiful projects.
In the Garden features a rainbow of the warm colors that I so enjoy sewing with… pinks, corals, yellows, greens, and aquas. Ever since my first collection, I have also enjoyed how nicely a warm gray plays with all of those sherbet brights. You will find my beautiful signature grays in this collection. Over the years, I have often joked that I can’t grow a beautiful flower garden outside (this girl does not have a green thumb!) but I can create flower-filled fabrics! In the Garden is bursting with flowers; wildflowers, daisies, blossoms, and buds are spread throughout. A beautiful new, sketchy floral is sure to become a favorite for backgrounds. Speaking of backgrounds, there are some wonderful low volume options in this collection that are quite lovely! You will also find sweet, geometric prints to round out the collection, including stripes for those bindings (my favorite way to finish a quilt).
I can’t wait to see the beautiful quilt “bouquets” you create with In the Garden fabrics. Corey

Swirls of shadowy grays, whispers of ivory, and decadent chocolate tones dance across florals, polka dots, and intricate patterns, creating a collection that feels as indulgent as a Parisian soirée. After the long, dark winter months, when the snow has melted away, Sweden enters a quiet in-between season. For weeks, the sky lingers in shades of gray, a steady drizzle softens the earth, and nature slumbers beneath a layer of withered leaves. The trees stand bare, and the landscape remains muted—until the first hints of life emerge.
Beneath the damp leaves, tiny buds push toward the light, revealing delicate bursts of color—the sweetest treat after months of monotony.
Then, almost overnight, the world transforms. Each day brings new blooms, and soon the once-muted landscape bursts into life in an explosion of petals, like a beautifully decorated cake: lush, intricate, and full of joy.
Hand-drawn by Swedish artist Linn Warme, the Floral Fondant collection captures this transition, celebrating the arrival of spring with bright, blooming designs as joyful as the season itself.
With playful vintage prints and a lively color palette of bubblegum pinks, chartreuse, tangerine, teal, and aqua, this collection brings the carefree spirit of the past into your creative projects. Infuse your designs with energy, fun, and a touch of retro magic, and let Happy Daze remind you that creativity knows no bounds. Get ready to make every day a little brighter and a lot groovier!

Cleared for takeoff! Let’s fly up, up, and away together with High Flight!
Whether you dream of soaring the skies or would rather watch planes fly overhead, this collection is sure to sweep you off your feet! You’ll be soaring through a soothing array of blues, dignified shades of green, airy creams and grays, and little pops of magenta on your projects. There’s even a spot for your own inner pilot to sign your logbook entry!
High Flight is so near and dear to my heart, as it’s a tribute to my former career as a corporate pilot and a nod to my dear Air Force pilot husband. This collection focuses more on the general aviation realm rather than airliners or military—each airplane silhouette is of a plane I’ve flown personally…from aerobatic racers to turbo-props. My trademark FMQ doodles are evident in the swirly wind; logbook entries with actual airport identifiers and completed flight maneuvers; and both hero prints…a Low Chart, which is a pilot’s road map in the sky, and also my lap board of aeronautical notes. So get your flight plan filed—I can’t wait to take off on this trip with you!

This collection is a follow up of Rashida’s 2017 collection, Paper Cuts. Paper Cuts was inspired by the Japanese festival, Tanabata, (also known as the Star Festival), as well as the art of Kirigami, a type of origami that involves the cutting of paper to create beautiful and intricate shapes.
Kim is bringing back her iconic Fried Egg print (first seen in her collection Welsummer in 2017) along with a whole line up of other breakfast all stars, including cereal, honey bears, and fruit.
Our designs for Calathea were inspired by our love of houseplants. The beautiful foliage and organic patterns are such a natural fit for textiles. Speckled, but on canvas! And, at a slightly large scale...
Based on her first collection she ever made, Reimagined Landscapes shows how Jen’s home and everyday color palette has changed since her move from west coast to east coast.
double gauze is back!
Reimagined Landscapes is an update to my first fabric collection, Imagined Landscapes. I designed that collection in 2017, when I still lived in San Francisco. Many of the prints are based on personal landmarks and scenes from my regular walks and bike rides around the city. I moved to the Hudson Valley in 2021, after 25 years in San Francisco. I’ve updated the palette of this collection to reflect the very distinct seasons of my new home.
I’m a printmaker by training, and many of my earliest fabric designs are based on my block printed and screenprinted work. Both my Seaside Daisy and Superbloom prints use the same, central motif – starburst patterns that I carved into blocks for block printing. The design is based on the flowers of the seaside daisy plant, which is native to coastal California. Seaside daisy grows wild on the cliffs and bluffs where I regularly rode my bike for 25 years.

Speckled is a paint splatter texture layered over a solid dyed Ruby Star Cotton base fabric, creating a rich, deep print with lots of dimension. This collection is even better than solids for suppor ting all of our Ruby Star Society collections. All skus are RS5027 [color number]. 108” wide fabrics are noted separately and come on 200 thread count cotton.
