Jen Hewett’s granny was named Florence, and Florence loved a fizzy drink. Jen inherited her book of cocktail recipes, and while flipping through it one day, she came across the recipe for a Floradora - gin, framboise, lime and soda - and thought the name was perfect for a collection of springy bubbly prints. Floradora is a celebration of springtime after a cold, gray winter, when everything blooms and brightens. Jen pushed her signature floral style in a more geometric direction with this group, creating a pleasing blend of lines and shapes. When designing Petunia, Kim was inspired by a trip to the International Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe. She gravitated towards the simple, honest, folky shapes of papercut art, and created a collection that has a similar earthy cottage vibe. The color palette is light and fresh like a sunny day. Kim envisioned the Gingham print being fun to cut in in lots of different ways we see it as a cute binding! Low Cal assortment available ASSTR3045 10H (10 yds of 20 skus with *). MAKE STRAPS: Fold straps in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press to crease. Unfold. Fold each long raw edge in almost to first crease, wrong sides together, and press edge to crease. On both bottom corners, bring side seam and bottom seam allowances together, lining them up, so that seams are right sides together. It helps to finger press the seam allowances in opposite directions so that the seams nest. (FIG 6) Align the raw fabric edges and stitch together. (FIG 7) Finish seam allowance with a zig zag stitch or serger. Turn right side out.

ASSEMBLE TOTE: On top edge of each tote piece, fold and press 1/2” towards wrong side. Fold and press an additional 1” and press. Unfold all creases. Place tote pieces right sides together. Stitch together along sides and bottom edges. (FIG 5) Finish seam allowance with a zig zag stitch or serger.

CUTTING: Cut (2) 33/4” width of fabric strips. Trim each to 28” long for straps. From remaining yardage, cut (2) pieces 18” wide and 19” tall for tote. (FIG 1) From both bottom corners on each 18”x19” piece, cut out and discard a 3” square. On top edge, mark 53/4” in from each side edge. (FIG 2)

On each side of bag, pin a strap to right side top edge with strap ends centered over marks and raw edges aligned. Be sure that the strap is not twisted. Stitch across strap ends at 1/4” to secure. (FIG 8) Fold top of bag along previously pressed creases, folding raw edge of strap under with raw edge of bag. Pin in place all the way around, pinning straps so that they are straight and sticking up away from bag.

Stitch all the way around 1 8” away from inner lower folded edge, backstitching at beginning and end. Stitch all the way around again, this time 1 8” from top edge of bag, making sure straps stay straight when you sew over them. (FIG 9) For extra durability, stitch a square and X over the end of each strap, within the two hem stitching lines.
