Betsy Chutchian Helps Quilters Connect Past to Present

Quilt historian, author, and designer Betsy Chutchian’s love of quilts began as a child. She remembers running her fingers over the fabrics in the 1930s-era quilt on her grandmother’s bed; pointing to different fabrics in the quilt, “my mother would say, ‘That was my dress, that was Mother’s apron,’” Betsy recalls, “and I realized, there’s a connection. There’s a history there.” Helping quilters find a connection to the past and create their own future heirlooms have been guiding principles in Betsy’s quilting and design journey.

From Past to Present

Betsy learned to sew on her grandmother’s treadle machine and made her first quilted project while in high school – quilted placemats pieced from a box of fabric squares bought from the Sears catalog in 1970. In the early 1980s, she started making quilts while pregnant with her daughter, teaching herself from books from

Chutchian with her

the library. After a while, she began selling quilted items in craft fairs and stitching up shop samples. By the early 1990s, she was working for a local quilt shop teaching quilting classes, and later, as a buyer.

In 2002, Betsy purchased the shop where she worked and taught, and one month later was diagnosed with breast cancer. She later sold the shop, but continued to work and teach there. “Breast cancer gave me courage and an incentive to do things I'd been afraid to do before," she says – like submitting proposals for her first solo book, Gone to Texas, and a fabric collection. Betsy’s earliest collections were released through Blue Hill Fabrics; when they closed, Betsy says that out of all the offers she received to work with other manufacturers, only Moda Fabrics “felt like the right fit.” Betsy’s first collection with Moda Fabrics, Eliza’s Indigo, was released in 2015, featuring rich indigo and brown prints carefully reproduced from an antique quilt in Betsy’s collection.

Telling HERstory, not HIStory

Betsy studied history in college, where she became more interested in women’s roles in history, saying that what was lacking from history was “what was going on at home.” Betsy uses her fabric collections to help tell those stories. And Betsy has a treasure trove of firsthand accounts of life as a woman at the turn of the century in her great-great-grandmother Lizzie’s journals. “Lizzie wrote in her journal nearly every day from 1857 until her death in 1882,” according to Betsy. “In those journals, I feel a strong connection to her,” Betsy says. Many of Lizzie’s journal entries are included in Betsy’s books, Gone to Texas and Lizzie’s Legacy

An Antique

Sampler Made New

Sally’s Stitches is Betsy’s 21st collection with Moda, and as with her previous collections, the prints are based on those

Betsy's great-great-grandmother Lizzie and a page from her journals and other family photos.

One of Betsy's cats, Harrison, approving the blocks in a Sally's Stitches quilt.

used in an antique quilt in Betsy’s collection. “I found the Sally’s Stitches quilt at a booth at Quilt Market in 2023,” Betsy recalls. She was instantly struck by the vibrant colors and extensive applique in the quilt. “People always think antique quilts are just brown,” she frets, noting that 19th century quilts very often featured brightly colored fabrics, like the cheddar and buttery yellows, turkey reds, Prussian blue, and poison greens of the Sally’s Stitches quilt.

“I love that it’s not perfect,” Betsy declares, referencing the antique quilt’s inconsistent block sizes and the “quirkiness” of the appliques, “but all together, it’s a beautiful quilt.” It’s also the perfect quilt for a blockof-the-month program, which Betsy will be releasing exclusively through Moda. The Turn Back Time Sampler and block-ofthe-month program will be supported with video tutorials with Betsy as she teaches quilters all the techniques needed to make this incredible quilt. Be sure to speak to your sales professional for more information on this exciting program!

Finding a fabulous 1840-1860’s sampler quilt was unbelievably exciting for me! I loved its oversized and quirky pieced and appliquéd blocks, all in terrific fabrics, and still in great condition – what an amazing find! With careful study, we have reproduced a number of prints from the sampler – and from another quilt in my collection from the same time period – to honor the makers and the vibrant colors of that era. Sally’s Story will be revealed as the block-of-the-month program unfolds. I do hope you join me as we Turn Back Time and reimagine Sally and her sampler’s journey.

Welcome to Wheatland! The featured fabric in this line tells the story of summers in Kansas and all across the Midwest. When I look out my back window, the wheat stalks are gently bending in the breeze with an assortment of wildflowers scattered along the fence line. The scene is a living painting of nature’s bounty. I’ve added smaller prints of wheat, flowers, vines, and berries to round out this ode to summer. A classic KT palette of warm reds, golds, pumpkins, purples, greens, blues, and blacks contrast with an assortment of soft tans to create a lovely collection of fabrics for your next quilting project. Come with me to Wheatland and surround yourself with the natural beauty of the countryside.

These wonderful wild prints were first released in 2017. The fabric line was used in our book, The Raven. The plaid print is used for the background of each of the nine blocks and offers a calm background for the large-scale prints used throughout the rest of the quilt. This fabric line really makes this autumn quilt spectacular. The movement of the applique shapes enhanced by the large-scale prints lends a feel of a windy autumn evening.

As many were not able to get this fabric the first time around, we are hoping more of you will be able to finish this project.

New Designer!

Linn Warme is a Swedish surface pattern designer and illustrator who always knew her career path would be a creative one.

She studied for a BA in Textile Art and an MA in Textile Design at university. Linn started her career as a pattern designer for some of Sweden’s largest fashion labels.

Today, Linn runs her own company, balancing life as a mother of two while continuing to pursue her passion for creating vibrant and unique pattern designs and illustrations.

Her work is full of life, often drawing inspiration from nature, color, and textiles—elements she explores in every design she creates.

Autumn Forest is inspired by the changing seasons, how nature dramatically changes as summer gives way to fall. In Sweden, nature is all around, deer and hedgehogs are often seen in the garden, and the kids gather pinecones for crafts. The leaves are changing colors, and on forest walks, you can pick wild mushrooms and blueberries.

Linn Warme’s collection captures the essence of this magical time of year. The designs showcase the beauty of the autumn season, where the rustling sound of leaves underfoot reminds us of the brisk winds calling for a new beginning.

Foraged, Found & Hand Me Down is a curated blend of the charm I find in discovered treasures in nature and evoking memories of items passed down.

Each print in the collection is a tribute to the beauty and little details in forgotten items, inspired by vintage textiles (like my handkerchief collection), faded details (as in a delicate weave of all the handmade baskets I love to collect), and nature's organic textures (such as the shape of a leaf or the tiniest of petals).

With a muted palette of rich tones including rust, gold, navy, flax, forest, and plum, each design plays off the next, inviting you to mix patterns and colors. Whether on a walk through the country, scavenging items at an estate sale, or going through hand-medown items from loved ones, I find so much joy in repurposing and styling foraged, found, and hand-me-down pieces in our own home.

I hope you to see you make your own keepsake and heirloom projects with this collection. Foraged, Found, & Hand Me Down also offers a statement floral panel in two color stories, perfect to get you started in creating a piece for generations to come.

Like so many of you, I cannot wait for that time of year when all the orange and black decorates my home. All the All Hallows Eve quilts come out to play, and each year I am itching to add in a few more to my ever-growing collection. For me, retro Halloween is all about soft, romantic prints and classic-feeling vibes. I don’t know about you, but orange is at the very top of my list of favorite colors, especially when it is paired with autumnal shades of greys, creams, and soft blacks.

Halloween has always been about family, fun, trick or treating and vintage Halloween decorations for me. So no ghosts, goblins and scary things needed. Reimagining Halloween decorating as something for any traditional, classic or modern home is what these Fig Tree Halloween collections are all about.

Join me as we celebrate my special brand of classic Halloween with Agatha Road.

I genuinely enjoy each season as it changes here in Ohio. But I have to say “I LOVE FALL MOST OF ALL!” The crispness in the air, visits to orchards, vibrant colors, and of course, pumpkins everywhere, make it an incredible season! In this, my newest fall collection, I have revisited the fresh color palette that I used in “Harvest Wishes” that did so well. Soft, warm pumpkin oranges, muted aquas, and a deep, rich “Harvest Night Sky” blue are all included in the color palette. Filled with autumn pumpkins, mums, and beautiful foliage, “I Love Fall” captures all of the things that I love best about the season in a fresh, pretty way!

Sunshine made of rich honey gold marries with the color of bright blue skies to bring you my Sun-drenched collection. This joyful line feels like fresh air on a bright summer morning And it features a bunch of beautiful blenders with dainty flowers, berries, and bees. My little dot print is back, too! And I’m so pleased to share that my beautiful bee print is available to you in both quilting cotton and durable but oh-so-soft cotton linen canvas.

Honeybee Haven and My Madeleine are my two new signature Sweetfire Road quilts, which my creative partners and I designed to evoke the timeless beauty that occurs with the classic pairing of blue and yellow.

Enjoy & Happy Quilting!

I became smitten with the color navy my first summer on Nantucket, a tiny little island off the coast of Cape Cod. I traveled across the country all by myself to this lovely place I’d only read about and spent my summer working on a sailboat and in a darling little ice cream shop. It was my first time completely on my own and I was ready for a new adventure. From the first moment I stepped off the ferry, it was love at first sight. From the cobblestone streets and salty air, to the beautiful flowers that grew everywhere I looked, Nantucket was and will always be perfection. My love of coastal design, simplicity, antique quilts, and every shade of blue began that summer, and 20 years later, it’s still going strong. There’s just nothing quite like a Nantucket summer.

Usually when I begin introducing quilters to a fabric line, I chat about the collection, including the colors and prints and how I dreamed everything up. While I could chat about the dreamy colors of this line, Sherbet Sunshine Flannels (aptly named), I could also mention all the flower-filled prints mixed with the sweetest geometrics: stripes, ginghams, plaids, and diamonds.

However, my favorite part of bringing this collection to life came when my 1-year-old niece saw Sherbet Sunshine Flannels for the first time. She grabbed one of the fabrics from the box and rubbed it gently on her cheek. Then, she set that one to the side and reached for another to rub on her cheek. She continued piece by piece; each one receiving the softness seal of approval from the little miss.

It's my hope that you enjoy these fabrics as much as Olive does. They were such fun to create for all of you and I hope they bring you joy! Corey

New Designer!

THIS FIRST SERIES OF FABRICS HAS MY WHOLE HEART. These mini collections are designed for my three boys - Henry, Oliver and Milo. Henry and Oliver are twins, but they are full of their own personality, and baby Milo is just trying to keep up. Each mini collection is designed with the boys’ uniqueness in mind. Henry - our organized little puzzler with his blue sparkly eyes. Oliver - our outdoorsman with his love for all things dirty! Milo - our little sunshine who is full of wiggles and dance moves. Each print throughout these collections is a modern take on the playful motifs in their childhood. -Amy

Henry is our puzzler. He loves a great bowtie and his chess club at school. He can always be found coloring, painting, or building a whole town with his toys. He is organized and tidy, and his imagination is endless.

Let’s

Go to Space…ready…3 2 1 Blast Off!!!

3, 2, 1 Blast off is a celebration of space exploration with a vintage twist. With its retro color palette and imagery, this collection is sure to transport you back in time when space exploration was just beginning. Hand-drawn vintage rockets and robots adorn the prints as well as a nine-square panel perfect for making small projects like pillows and totes or a whole quilt. The collection would not be complete without a spaceship backpack panel and its very own astronaut stuffed toy.

There are three quilt patterns for 3 2 1 Blast off that showcase this whimsical collection. The quilts range from rockets to robots, each quilt celebrating the outer space theme. These quilts are a perfect way to infuse a little vintage space into any little one's room. Buckle up because we are going to space – vintage style, that is!

Ruby

When it’s time to create a collaborative collection, we use a process we jokingly call “Shark Tank”. We each put together a mood board for a group collection, and then we pitch our ideas to each other in a group meeting. After discussing all the options and deciding together which collection we’re most excited about, we go straight to work on making art. The designer who pitched the winning idea will art direct the collection, and help to pull it all together.

For our collaborative collection Melody pitched an idea designers to do a group simpler, vintage-inspired, hand-drawn prints that geometric elements like lines, stripes, and dots. imagined something with the vintage vibes of double knit polyester fabrics (the designs are good even though the so bad!) but all drawn and put through the filter RSS designers. The designers spent a little over a month working together, submitting more ideas and colorways are used in the final collection. Melody helped narrow down and tie all the colors together at the end.

THE HARD WORK OF NARROWING DOWN OUR COLLECTIONS!

As a group, we create so many designs for a collaborative collection that we don’t end up using, even if we love them! Below, designs by Melody and Alexia that the group decided not to include in Geometry. It can be hard to choose what to let go of and what to keep! If we’re lucky, we may see these in another collection in the future.

In her original mood board, Melody put together this cluster of designs to show the other designers how she envisioned the color for the collection. The color evolved over time into the collection as we see it now, and the top three colorways were used in the final group!

Use our free pattern or kit to make a quilt that perfectly fits the mid-century vibes of this collection!

The first instance of Washi was in Rashida’s collection, aptly titled Washi, for Timeless Treasures! It was actually Rashida’s second collection of all time! Washi came out in the spring of 2012, and was a huge hit with the growing modern fabric audience.

The dress on the right is from Rae Hoekstra, called the Washi dress in 2012 but now called the Trillium Dress.

The Washi print by Rashida Coleman-Hale has been around for over a decade now, and has made several surprise appearances over the years. We are so excited to bring this iconic print back as the star of its own collection!

The second time Washi made an appearance was in 2015, in the Cotton + Steel collaborative holiday collection, Tinsel! The colors were a perfect modern spin on a holiday collection.

The next iteration of Washi was in another holiday collection, this time for Ruby Star Society. The 2022 collection was called Jolly Darlings, and the idea behind it was to bring in the designers’ most iconic prints and make them jolly! Washi was a shoe-in for this collection.

Making the Block:

In 2012, Rashida whipped up this pattern to go with her very first Washi collection, and it is a perfect fit for her new Washi group as well!

CRAZY STAR BLOCK TUTORIAL

WHAT YOU NEED:

- 1 cotton solid for the background - 8 assorted cotton prints for the stems - Templates

TEMPLATES HERE

Print the 3 templates linked to the QR code. The block is quite large, so you’ll need to print the template on 81/2” x 14” legal size paper. Do not scale!!

Cut out 8 background pieces using Template ‘A’. When cutting out template ‘A’ cut out 4 prints, then flip the template over and cut out the remaining 4 prints.

Cut 8 assorted prints using Template ‘B’. When cutting out template ‘B’ cut out 4 prints, then flip the template over and cut out the remaining 4 prints.

Cut 4 background pieces using Template ‘C’.

Once you’ve finish cutting lay out your fabric in the order that you would like. Something like this:

To assemble the 101/2” block lay one printed piece (‘B’) on the mat in front of you right side up. Place one piece (‘C’) on top RST, lining up the seams. I usually just eyeball it when lining the edges up. You’ll want your stitch to start and end right in the middle of where the pieces intersect.

It’s exactly 1/4”, so don’t be scared, stitch away! Repeat this step with the remaining print on the other side. Press the seams open.

Now place the piece you just made on the mat in front of you right side up and place one piece (‘A’) RST on top. Just like you did before, eyeball the seam and begin and end your stitch right where the seams intersect. I promise it’s 1/4”! Don’t worry if they’re not perfect, you’ll have a chance to square them up later on.

Press all of your seams open... and you should have a 101/2” block that looks like this!

Repeat the above process until you have a total of four 101/2” x 101/2” blocks. I like to square them up a bit as well before I continue assembling.

Take two of your blocks and lay one on top of the other RST lining up your seam lines. Stitch them together down one edge. Repeat with the other two blocks. Press your seams open.

You did it! you made a crazy star block!

The colorways below are all the newest Washi colors! Rashida has brought back this print in two different collections, now much more graphic and using some of the most popular Ruby Star Society colors! The three left colors are in Rashida’s previous collection Salutations, and the four colors on the right are the newest colorways in Washi Plus!
